RESUMEN

There has been a growing interest over the past decade into the health benefits of music, in particular examining its psychological and neurological effects. Yet this is the first attempt to systematically review publications on the psychoneuroimmunology of music. Of the selected sixty-three studies published over the past 22 years, a range of effects of music on neurotransmitters, hormones, cytokines, lymphocytes, vital signs and immunoglobulins as well as psychological assessments are cataloged. Research so far points to the pivotal role of stress pathways in linking music to an immune response. However, several challenges to this research are noted: (1) there is very little discussion on the possible mechanisms by which music is achieving its neurological and immunological impact; (2) the studies tend to examine biomarkers in isolation, without taking into consideration the interaction of the biomarkers in question with other physiological or metabolic activities of the body, leading to an unclear understanding of the impact that music may be having; (3) terms are not being defined clearly enough, such as distinctions not being made between different kinds of stress and 'music' being used to encompass a broad spectrum of activities without determining which aspects of musical engagement are responsible for alterations in biomarkers. In light of this, a new model is presented which provides a framework for developing a taxonomy of musical and stress-related variables in research design, and tracing the broad pathways that are involved in its influence on the body.

Background: The presence of visual imagery in dreams of congenitally blind people has long been a matter of substantial controversy. We set to systematically review body of published work on the presence and nature of oneiric visuo-spatial impressions in congenitally and early blind subjects across different areas of research, from experimental psychology, functional neuroimaging, sensory substitution, and sleep research. Methods: Relevant studies were identified using the following databases: EMBASE, MEDLINE and PsychINFO. Results: Studies using diverse imaging techniques and sensory substitution devices broadly suggest that the "blind" occipital cortex may be able to integrate non-visual sensory inputs, and thus possibly also generate visuo-spatial impressions. Visual impressions have also been reported by blind subjects who had near-death or out-of-body experiences. Conclusion: Deciphering the mechanistic nature of these visual impression could open new possibility in utilization of neuroplasticity and its potential role for treatment of neurodisability.

It is unclear to what extent the absence of vision affects the sensory sensitivity for oneiric construction. Similarly, the presence of visual imagery in the mentation of dreams of congenitally blind people has been largely disputed. We investigate the presence and nature of oneiric visuo-spatial impressions by analysing 180 dreams of seven congenitally blind people identified from the online database DreamBank. A higher presence of auditory, haptic, olfactory, and gustatory sensation in dreams of congenitally blind people was demonstrated, when compared to normally sighted individuals. Nonetheless, oneiric visual imagery in reports of congenitally blind subjects was also noted, in opposition to some previous studies, and raising questions about the possible underlying neuro-mechanisms.

Vision loss, dementia, and motor and speech declines all impact the educational experience of individuals with Batten disease and can adversely impact effective learning. There are as yet limited data to support evidence-based approaches to meeting the educational needs of affected individuals. This paper provides an overview of recent work to evaluate and address educational issues with a life-long perspective relevant to individuals with juvenile-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL) and the professionals that provide them with educational support. In particular, several main activities of the recently completed 'JNCL and Education' project are summarised, including a survey of parents, educational professionals and social/health workers, development of a formative assessment tool to identify and respond to an individual student's strengths and needs in the learning environment, and proposed strategies for prolonging literacy and language skills. A key concept that should be emphasised in the educational plan for students with JNCL is that of 'proactive' and 'hastened' learning, that is, providing an early emphasis on adaptive skills that will be required in the later stages of disease progression when new learning will be more difficult to achieve. An additional key concept is participation in real-life activities to maintain skills and quality of life, particularly in the later stages of disease progression.
