RESUMEN

Oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEn ; CH3 (-OCH2 -)n O-CH3 , n=3-5) are a novel class of sustainable synthetic fuels, which are of increasing interest due to their soot-free combustion. Herein a novel anhydrous OMEn synthesis route is presented. Catalyzed by trimethyloxonium salts, dimethoxymethane takes up monomeric gaseous formaldehyde instantaneously and forms high purity OMEn at temperatures of 25-30 °C. This new anhydrous approach using molecular formaldehyde and catalytic amounts of highly active trimethyloxonium salts represents a promising new step towards a sustainable formation of OMEn emanating from CO2 and H2 .

RESUMEN

Mesenchymal-epithelial transition exon 14 (METex14) skipping mutations occur in about 3%-4% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This is an aggressive subtype associated with poor prognosis. METex14 skipping is a potentially targetable mutation. Targeted therapy is a promising treatment modality for patients with advanced/metastatic METex14-mutant NSCLC. Performing systematic molecular testing to detect the driver mutation is essential for initiating targeted therapy. However, there is a lack of guidelines on molecular testing for assessing the eligibility of patients for targeted therapy. Therefore, a multidisciplinary panel consisting of experts from the Middle East, Africa, and Russia convened via a virtual advisory board meeting to provide their insights on various molecular testing techniques for the diagnosis of METex14 skipping mutation, management of patients with targeted therapies, and developing consensus recommendations for improving the processes. The expert panel emphasized performing molecular testing and liquid biopsy before treatment initiation and tissue re-biopsy for patients with failed molecular testing. Liquid biopsy was recommended as complementary to tissue biopsy for disease monitoring and prognosis. Selective MET inhibitors were recommended as the first and subsequent lines of therapy. These consensus recommendations will facilitate the management of METex14 skipping NSCLC in routine practice and warrant optimum outcomes for these patients.

Introduction Mental well-being is an essential aspect of general health. Assessing mental well-being is crucial to leading a healthy life. The global population is, presumptively, affected at a ratio of one out of four individuals with a mental or neurological disorder. This further emphasized the importance of the financial, social, and health implications that ensue. Methods and materials Data collection was performed using the symptoms checklist-90 (SCL-90) survey between March and April of 2021. The data collected included demographic data as well as nine domains that include some of the most common psychiatric symptoms. The collected questionnaires were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests. Non-parametric tests were utilized, as the SCL-90 dimensions and global index scores follow a non-normal distribution. Results The questionnaire yielded 387 responses. Females comprised the majority of the participants. The most prevalent symptom described as extremely common by females was waking up early in the morning. The most commonly described symptom described as not at all by females was hearing words that others do not hear. There was no statistical difference in mental well-being between males and females. Older participants (>40 years old) had better mental well-being in comparison to their younger counterparts. Conclusion During the fallout of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, much attention and resources were allocated toward the physical aspect of the pandemic, yet the psychological implications must not be understated. Multiple variables, such as age, marital status, and unemployment, may impact the mental well-being of the population and must be further assessed.

So far, there has been scarce information about the status of immunoglobulins (Ig) and the gene expression of inflammatory cytokines in buffaloes showing digestive troubles. The purpose of the present study was to explore the modulation of gene expression of some immune-inflammatory markers in buffaloes suffered from various digestive disorders. For this reason, 50 native breed water buffaloes were studied. Forty of these buffaloes showed various symptoms of digestive disorders and were allocated into 4 groups of equal sizes (group 1: uncategorized stomatitis; group 2: acute traumatic reticuloperitonitis [TRR]; group 3: acute rumen impaction; and group 4: undifferentiated enteritis). Ten apparently healthy buffaloes were randomly selected and considered as a control group. RNA was firstly extracted from the whole blood then a reverse transcription kits was used to convert the RNA to cDNA. Real-time PCR was used to measure the expression of mRNAs of interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IgG, and IgA, while glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) used as an internal reference. The results of real-time PCR revealed a significant (P ≤ 0.05) upregulation of the gene expression of IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α in blood of diseased buffaloes compared with those of controls. Animals showing acute TRP had peak values of both IL-6 and IL-10; while those exhibiting enteritis and rumen impaction had the highest values of IL-1ß and TNF-α, respectively. The results of qPCR also revealed a significant (P ≤ 0.05) downregulation of both IgG and IgA gene expression in blood of all diseased buffaloes compared with controls. The lowest values of both genes were recorded in buffaloes showing acute TRP. The results herein suggest that the tested genes could have a pivotal role in the pathophysiologic mechanism of the underlying diseases.
