RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: A quantification of the residual bone mass of the mandible (B/A) was utilized in this study to examine the correlation between mandibular fracture and residual bone mass. To improve the clinical utilization rate and reduce the incidence of iatrogenic mandibular fractures, the B/A ratio calculation should be simplified. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected from the Yanbian University Hospital on 175 cases of mandibular fracture with third molar (M3), 67 normal cases without fractures and 20 cases of impacted teeth extraction. Twenty cases of iatrogenic mandibular fracture were collected, and the case records and panoramic radiographs of the patients were recorded. RESULTS: The average B/A ratio of mandibular angle fracture group was 0.61±0.10.The value of B/A was found to be statistically significant in terms of whether M3 emerged from alveolar bone (P = 0.001), location (horizontal P < 0.001, vertical P < 0.001), the degree of impaction (P < 0.001), the number of roots (P < 0.001), the difference in impaction (P < 0.001), and the fracture type (P = 0.002). The average B/A ratio of normal group was 0.62±0.10. In the statistical results of the B/A value of normal patients, M3 involving alveolar bone (P < 0.001), position classification (P < 0.05), degree of impaction (P < 0.001) and presence or absence of a root (P < 0.05) were statistically significant. The average B/A ratio of iatrogenic mandibular angle fracture group was 0.28±0.08. The average B/A ratio of the extraction group for impacted teeth was 0.62 ± 0.09. CONCLUSIONS: There is a high risk of mandibular angle fracture when the (B/A) value of the residual bone height (B) in the mandibular M3 area compared to the mandibular bone height (A) in the M3 area is less than 0.4.

RESUMEN

Objective: The programmed death receptor 1/programmed death ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) pathway can negatively regulate the immune response of the body, and serum soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1) can reflect the expression level of PD-L1. This study aims to compare the expressional differences of sPD-L1 in serum between patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and C (CHC) and further explore the factors influencing the clinical cure of CHB. Methods: 60 cases with CHB, 40 cases with CHC, and 60 healthy controls were selected. Serum levels of sPD-L1 were detected using an ELISA kit. The relationship between sPD-L1 levels and viral load, liver injury indicators, and others was analyzed in CHB and CHC patients. According to the distribution type of the data, a one-way ANOVA or Kruskal Wallis test as well as Pearson's correlation or Spearman's rank correlation analysis were performed. A difference of P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The serum sPD-L1 levels were significantly higher in CHB patients (414.6 ± 214.9) pg/ml than those in CHC patients (58.9 ± 122.1) pg/ml and the healthy control group (66.27 ± 24.43) pg/ml, and there was no statistically significant difference in serum sPD-L1 between CHC patients and the healthy control group. Further grouping and correlation analysis showed that the level of serum sPD-L1 was positively correlated with the content of HBsAg in CHB patients but not with HBV DNA, alanine transaminase, albumin, and other liver injury indicators. Additionally, there was no correlation between serum sPD-L1 levels, HCV RNA, and liver injury indicators in CHC patients. Conclusion: The serum sPD-L1 levels are significantly higher in CHB patients than those in the healthy control group and the CHC group, and there is a positive correlation between sPD-L1 levels and HBsAg. The persistent presence of HBsAg is an important mechanism for the activity of the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, indicating that the activity of the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway may be an important factor that cannot be clinically cured in CHB as in CHC.

RESUMEN

Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of radiomics features of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound (US) in predicting extrathyroidal extension (ETE) status in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Patients and Methods: 2D and 3D thyroid ultrasound images of 72 PTC patients confirmed by pathology were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were assigned to ETE and non-ETE. The regions of interest (ROIs) were obtained manually. From these images, a larger number of radiomic features were automatically extracted. Lastly, the diagnostic abilities of the radiomics models and a radiologist were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. We extracted 1693 texture features firstly. Results: The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of the radiologist was 0.65. For 2D US, the mean AUC of the three classifiers separately were: 0.744 for logistic regression (LR), 0.694 for multilayer perceptron (MLP), 0.733 for support vector machines (SVM). For 3D US they were 0.876 for LR, 0.825 for MLP, 0.867 for SVM. The diagnostic efficiency of the radiomics was better than radiologist. The LR model had favorable discriminate performance with higher area under the curve. Conclusion: Radiomics based on US image had the potential to preoperatively predict ETE. Radiomics based on 3D US images presented more advantages over radiomics based on 2D US images and radiologist.

RESUMEN

A novel process has been developed to synthesize MgH2nanoparticles by combining ball milling and thermal hydrogenolysis of di-n-butylmagnesium (C4H9)2Mg, denoted as MgBu2. With the aid of mechanical impact, the hydrogenolysis temperature of MgBu2in heptane and cyclohexane solution was considerably lowered down to 100 °C, and the MgH2nanoparticles with an average particle size ofca.8.9 nm were obtained without scaffolds. The nano-size effect of the MgH2nanoparticles causes a notable decrease in the onset dehydrogenation temperature of 225 °C and enthalpy of 69.78 kJ mol-1 · H2. This thermally-assisted milling and hydrogenolysis process may also be extended for synthesizing other nanomaterials.

RESUMEN

Recurrence and diffuse infiltration challenge traditional therapeutic strategies for malignant glioma. Immunotherapy appears to be a promising approach to obtain long-term survival. Dendritic cells (DCs), the most specialized and potent antigen-presenting cells (APCs), play an important part in initiating and amplifying both the innate and adaptive immune responses against cancer cells. However, cancer cells can escape from immune surveillance by inhibiting maturation of DCs. Until the present, molecular mechanisms of maturation inhibition of DCs in the tumor microenvironment (TME) have not been fully revealed. Our study showed that pretreatment with tumor-conditioned medium (TCM) collected from supernatant of primary glioma cells significantly suppressed the maturation of DCs. TCM pretreatment significantly changed the morphology of DCs, TCM decreased the expression levels of CD80, CD83, CD86 and interleukin (IL)-12p70, while it increased the expression levels of IL-10, transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß and IL-6. RNA-Seq showed that TCM pretreatment significantly increased the gene expression level of suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) in DCs. suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) knock-down significantly antagonized the maturation inhibition of DCs by TCM, which was demonstrated by the restoration of maturation markers. TCM pretreatment also significantly suppressed T cell viability and T helper type 1 (Th1) response, and SOCS1 knock-down significantly antagonized this suppressive effect. Further, TCM pretreatment significantly suppressed p65 nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity in DCs, and SOCS1 knock-down significantly attenuated this suppressive effect. In conclusion, our research demonstrates that TCM up-regulate SOCS1 to suppress the maturation of DCs via the nuclear factor-kappa signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to compare the biomechanical stability of the Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA) (with 200 mm, 240 mm and 280 mm-long main nails) for the management of unstable intertrochanteric femoral fractures. METHODS: Tronzo-Evans Type IV and V fractures were built by applying a three-dimensional finite element model. Further, PFNA-II with 200 mm, 240 mm and 280 mm-long main nails were applied for fixation. The above model is the creation of 3 researchers designed in order to obtain average values of numerical stress. Von Mises stress distribution and medial and lateral stress peak of the femur and PFNA were compared. RESULTS: 240 mm and 280 mm PFNA medial stress peak was reduced significantly in comparison to 200 mm PFNA (p⟨0.05). However, there was no difference between 240 mm and 280 mm PFN. Also, no statistical difference was observed with any of 3 lengths in both medial and lateral stress peak for Evans Type IV and V PFNA. CONCLUSION: 240 mm and 280 mm PFNA could reduce femur fixation medial stress peak. Further, they were more efficient in comparison to the 200 mm PFNA, and their biomechanical stability was similar to that of the 280 mm nail.

RESUMEN

N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) are metabolites of mostly gram-negative bacteria and are critical signaling molecules in bacterial quorum-sensing systems. At threshold concentrations, AHLs can activate the expression of pathogenic genes and induce diseases. Therefore, reducing AHL concentrations is a key point of disease control in plants. AHL-lactonase, which is expressed by aiiA, is widespread in Bacillus sp and can hydrolyze AHLs. In the present study, we cloned aiiA from Bacillus subtilis by PCR. A plant expression vector of aiiA was constructed and name Pcam-PPP3-aiiA, in which expression of aiiA was controlled by the pathogen-inducible plant promoter PPP3. The recombinant plasmid was transferred into Eucalyptus × urophylla × E. grandis by an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. PCR and Southern blotting showed that aiiA was successfully integrated into the E. urophylla × E. grandis genome and its expression was induced by Ralstonia solanacearum 12 h after inoculation, as shown by reverse transcription-PCR. The transcription efficacy of aiiA increased 43.88-, 30.65-, and 18.95-fold after inoculation with R. solanacearum, Erwinia carotovora ssp. zeae (Sabet) and Cylindrocladium quinqueseptatum, respectively as shown by RT-real-time PCR. Transgenic E.urophylla × E.grandis expressing the AIIA protein exhibited significantly enhanced disease resistance compared to non-transgenic plants by delaying the onset of wilting and reducing the disease index.

RESUMEN

Insect defensins, are cationic peptides that play an important role in immunity against microbial infection. In the present study, an anionic defensin from Plutella xylostella, (designated as PxDef) was first cloned and characterized. Amino acid sequence analysis showed that the mature peptide owned characteristic six-cysteine motifs with predicted isoelectric point of 5.57, indicating an anionic defensin. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that PxDef was significantly induced in epidermis, fat body, midgut and hemocytes after injection of heat-inactivated Bacillus thuringiensis, while such an induction was delayed by the injection of live B. thuringiensis in the 4th instar larvae of P. xylostella. Knocking down the expression of nuclear transcription factor Dorsal in P. xylostella by RNA interference significantly decreased the mRNA level of PxDef, and increased the sensitivity of P. xylostella larvae to the infection by live B. thuringiensis. The purified recombinant mature peptide (PxDef) showed higher activity against Gram-positive bacteria, with the minimum inhibition concentrations of 1.6 and 2.6 µM against B. thuringiensis and Bacillus subtilis, respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first report about an anionic PxDef, which may play an important role in the immune system of P. xylostella against B. thuringiensis.

RESUMEN

Objective: To understand how social and cultural factors influence sexual perceptions, sexual practices, and HIV transmission among men who have sex with men at selected sites in China. Methods: Qualitative methodology was used and face to face, semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted from April 2013 to October 2015 in Sichuan, Jiangxi, Henan, Heilongjiang provinces and Chongqing municipality of China. Results: A total of 184 men who have sex with men participated in the interviews. Forty-eight originated from Henan Province, and 12, 50, 47, and 27 from Jiangxi, Heilongjiang, Sichuan provinces and Chongqing municipality, respectively. A total of 122 participants(66.3%)were under 30 years of age, 111 were college graduates(61.3%), 140 were unmarried(76.5%), and 74 were HIV positive(40.2%). Among interviewees, 6%(11 MSM)were employed at nongovernmental organizations. The main findings revealed that: Owing to sociocultural influences and social norms, most homosexual men concealed their sexual orientation and married females so as to fulfill their family obligation; this may encourage HIV transmission from a high-risk population to the general population; the main features of male homosexual behaviors, as well as those of the associated community and subculture, included hedonism, less concern about health, drug abuse, encouraging of high risk behaviors among men who have sex with men, and negative attitudes regarding HIV prevention; subgroups among MSM were found to have differential HIV transmission risk behaviors, with young men more vulnerable to infection with HIV. Conclusion: Sociocultural factors, including external socioenvironmental circumstances and internal MSM community subcultures, have adverse impacts on HIV transmission among men who have sex with men. Because there were varied behavior modes and HIV transmission risks among MSM subgroups, further study focusing on MSM subgroups is imperative, to provide a basis for more targeted and effective prevention strategies.

RESUMEN

Grain shape and weight are the most important components of rice yield and are controlled by quantitative trait loci (QTLs). In this study, a double-haploid population, derived from the cross of japonica CJ06 and indica TN1, was used to analyze QTLs for grain shape and weight under two conditions: normal growth with unbroken husk and removing partial husk after flowering. Correlation analysis revealed that these traits, except grain weight, had a connection between the two conditions. Twenty-nine QTLs for grain shape and weight were detected on chromosomes 1 to 3; 6; 8 to 10; and 12, with the likelihood of odds value ranging from 2.38 to 5.36, including 10 different intervals. Some intervals were specifically detected after removing partial husk. The results contribute to the understanding of the genetic basis of grain filling and growth regulation, and provide us some assistance for improving grain plumpness in rice breeding.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Effective care of young people with rare conditions requires ongoing coordinated medical treatment as well as educational and social support services. However, information on treatment is often lacking due to limited data. South Carolina has a repository of comprehensive health and human service data with which individuals may be tracked across the data systems of multiple state agencies and organizations. OBJECTIVE: To develop a method for studying health care of young persons with rare conditions using this repository. METHODS: We identified individuals aged 15 to 24 years diagnosed during 2000-2010 with Fragile X syndrome (FXS), spina bifida (SB), or muscular dystrophy (MD) using a series of algorithms. ICD-9-CM codes were used to initially identify the cohort from medical billing data. Demographics, medical care, employment, education, and socioeconomic status data were then extracted from linked administrative sources. RESULTS: We identified 1,040 individuals with these rare conditions: 125 with FXS, 695 with SB, and 220 with MD. The vast majority of the cases (95%) were identified in the Medicaid database. Half of the cohort was male, with a higher percentage in the FXS and MD groups. Sixty-two percent of the cohort was enrolled in the last year of high school. Over half of the cohort received support services from the state's disability and special-needs agency; 16% received food assistance. Thirty-eight percent were employed at some point during the study period. Forty-nine individuals with SB and 56 with MD died during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: We used a linked statewide data system to study rare conditions. Strengths include the diversity of information, rigorous identification strategies, and access to longitudinal data. Despite limitations inherent to administrative data, we found that linked state data systems are valuable resources for investigating important public health questions on rare conditions.

RESUMEN

Centromeres depend on chromatin containing the conserved histone H3 variant CENP-A for function and inheritance, while the role of centromeric DNA repeats remains unclear. Retroelements are prevalent at centromeres across taxa and represent a potential mechanism for promoting transcription to aid in CENP-A incorporation or for generating RNA transcripts to maintain centromere integrity. Here, we probe into the transcription and RNA localization of the centromere-enriched retroelement G2/Jockey-3 (hereafter referred to as Jockey-3 ) in Drosophila melanogaster , currently the only in vivo model with assembled centromeres. We find that Jockey-3 is a major component of the centromeric transcriptome and produces RNAs that localize to centromeres in metaphase. Leveraging the polymorphism of Jockey-3 and a de novo centromere system, we show that these RNAs remain associated with their cognate DNA sequences in cis , suggesting they are unlikely to perform a sequence-specific function at all centromeres. We show that Jockey-3 transcription is positively correlated with the presence of CENP-A, and that recent Jockey-3 transposition events have occurred preferentially at CENP-A-containing chromatin. We propose that Jockey-3 contributes to the epigenetic maintenance of centromeres by promoting chromatin transcription, while inserting preferentially within these regions, selfishly ensuring its continued expression and transmission. Given the conservation of retroelements as centromere components through evolution, our findings have broad implications in understanding this association in other species.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate adherence to intravascular catheter (IVC) insertion and maintenance guidelines in Chinese tertiary hospitals. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey of adult inpatients with IVC placements was conducted from July to September 2022 in 20 tertiary hospitals in China. One clinical staff member from each department in each hospital was assigned to participate in the survey. Questionnaires were uniformly collected and reviewed after three months. RESULTS: This study included 1815 cases (62.69%) of central venous catheter, 471 cases (16.27%) of peripherally inserted central catheter, 461 cases (15.92%) of PORT, and 147 cases (5.08%) of haemodialysis catheter insertions. Statistically significant differences in compliance were observed across the four IVC types, specifically in relation to the insertion checklist, standard operating procedure, and insertion environment (P<0.05). Practice adherence during IVC maintenance differed significantly across the four IVC types in aspects such as availability of IVC maintenance verification forms, daily scrubbing of the catheterized patients, and catheter connection methods (P<0.05). A total of 386 (13.34%) patients developed fever, 1086 (37.53%) were treated with therapeutic antibiotics, 16 (0.55%) developed central-line-associated bloodstream infections, two (0.07%) developed local skin infections, and six (0.21%) developed deep vein thrombosis. CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to guidelines regarding insertion and maintenance differed across the four IVC types; there is a gap between the recommended measures and the actual operation of the guidelines. Therefore, it is necessary to further enhance training and develop checklists to prevent central-line-associated bloodstream infections.

RESUMEN

The genetic control of grain weight (GW) remains poorly understood. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) determining the GW of rice were identified using a natural GW mutant, sgw. Using a segregating population derived from sgw (low GW) and cultivar 9311 ('9311'; indica, high GW), the chromosome segment associated with GW was detected on the short arm of chromosome 7. To validate and further refine the locus, QTL analysis based on F2 and F3 populations was conducted, and a single major QTL (designated as qsgw7) affecting the 1000-grain weight of paddy rice was identified on the short arm region of rice chromosome 7 between simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers RM21997 and RM22015, where 4 bacterial artificial chromosome clones, OJ1339_F05, P0506F02, P0011H09, and P0519E12, were present. Analysis of the near isogenic line for qsgw7 (NILqsgw7) showed that the grain length, width, and volume of paddy rice in NILqsgw7 were significantly lower than those in '9311' and that the 1000-grain weight, grain length, width, volume, and chalkiness of brown rice in NILqsgw7 were significantly lower than those in '9311'. These results suggested that the qsgw7 gene, which was identified in this study, may be a new GW-related QTL that could affect GW and grain shape, especially grain plumpness.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the utilization of sexual health services among community-based older adults in Chongqing and explore its potential correlates. Methods: A cross-sectional survey using multistage sampling among community-based older adults aged ≥50 years was conducted in Chongqing between June 2020 and December 2022. A questionnaire including information on demographic characteristics, general health, sexual health status, and sexual health services utilization was collected. Sexual health and reproductive services utilization was defined as having ever been tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), or having had a male/gynecological reproductive health examination in the past year. Logistic regression was used to examine the correlates of the utilization of sexual health services. Results: A total of 794 community-based older adults participated in the study (482 were male, and 312 were female). The mean age was (62.8±8.2) years. The proportion of HIV testing was 18.0%, and the proportion of reproductive health examination was 10.1% among community-based older adults. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the age group of 60-69 years (aOR=0.37, 95%CI: 0.18-0.76), female (aOR=11.34, 95%CI: 5.71-22.52), monthly income ≥5 000 yuan (aOR=3.05, 95%CI: 1.01-9.27), being sexual activity (aOR=4.99, 95%CI: 2.23-11.15) was significantly associated with had a reproductive health examination in the past year. Conclusions: The proportion of sexual health services utilization among older adults was low. Older sexual health education should be further strengthened, the close relationship between older adults should be correctly guided and dealt with, and the sexual health services suitable for the older population should be formulated.

RESUMEN

Objective: To understand the current status of condom use and its correlates among community-based older adults in Chongqing, China. Methods: Cross-sectional study based on a multistage sampling method was conducted in Chongqing from June 2020 to December 2022. The estimated sample size was 735. Through face-to-face interviews, the investigators collected the sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behavior characteristics, awareness of AIDS prevention knowledge, etc. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to explore the correlates of condom use during the last sexual behavior among the participants. Results: A total of 761 participants were included in this study, with 476 males and 285 females, whose average age was (63.8±8.2) years old, mainly in the age group of 60-69 years (44.5%). Among the participants, the rate of condom use during the last sexual behavior was 9.7%. The multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that correlates of condom use during the last sexual behavior included urban household registration (aOR=2.34, 95%CI: 1.12-4.89), monthly income of 1 000-4 999 Yuan, and 5 000 Yuan and above (aOR=4.49, 95%CI: 1.31-15.41; aOR=16.33, 95%CI: 4.30-62.00), self-assessed sexual behavior risk as very risky/relatively risky (aOR=3.97, 95%CI: 1.40-11.31), awareness of AIDS prevention knowledge (aOR=0.36, 95%CI: 0.21-0.62). Conclusions: The rate of condom use among community-based older adults in Chongqing is low. Comprehensive intervention measures should be taken in combination with the characteristics and needs of community-based older adults to improve awareness of AIDS prevention knowledge and perception of AIDS risk and promote condom use among this population.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The employment impact and financial burden experienced by families of children with fragile X syndrome (FXS) has not been quantified in the USA. METHOD: Using a national fragile X family survey, we analysed data on 1019 families with at least one child who had a full FXS mutation. Out-of-pocket expenditures related to fragile X were reported. We used logistic regression to examine the role of insurance, number of affected children, and number of total co-occurring conditions in predicting the financial burden and employment impact of FXS, while adjusting for race, education, marital status and other sociodemographic predictors. RESULTS: Almost half of families affected by FXS reported that they had experienced an increased financial burden and nearly 60% stated that they had had to change work hours or stop work because of FXS. Families with health insurance that met family needs were significantly less likely to report an excess financial burden. The type of insurance (private or public) was not associated with the reported financial burden. Affected children's mutation status, especially male children with the full mutation, was associated with employment impact. The total number of co-occurring conditions was associated with both financial burden and employment impact. CONCLUSIONS: Families affected by FXS experienced a significant employment impact and financial burden. Policies designed to help families with FXS need to take into consideration the dimension of co-occurring conditions.

RESUMEN

Objectives: To analyze and understand the risk factors related to HIV new infections among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods: A longitudinal observational study among MSM was conducted to collect information on HIV related behaviors and sero-conversion. Univariate and multivariate generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to discuss the risk factors for HIV new infection. Results: A total number of 4 305 MSM were followed during 2013-2015. Among those self-reported MSM who are seeking partners on the Interner tended to have higher proportion on receptive anal intercourse and consistent condom use during anal intercourse than the subgroups seeking their partners in gay bars or bathrooms. HIV incidence among followed MSM during the study period appeared as 4.3/100 person years, with adjusted RR (aRR) of HIV infection for receptive anal intercourse as group 2.20 (95% CI: 1.49-3.24) times than that of insertion anal intercourse group. Those who used rush-poppers (aRR=1.55, 95% CI: 1.10-2.17), unprotected anal intercourse (aRR=2.24, 95%CI: 1.62-3.08), and those with syphilis infection (aRR=2.95, 95%CI: 2.00-4.35) were also risk factors for HIV new infections. After controlling other factors, the relationship between the ways of seeking partners and HIV new infection was not statistical significant. Conclusion: Risk factors for HIV new infection among MSM appeared complex and interactive, suggesting that further studies are needed to generate tailored strategies for the prevention of HIV epidemic among MSM population.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the morbidity, clinical characteristics, therapeutic outcomes and prognosis of cardiac lymphoma. Methods: Individual patient data were obtained from pathology defined 10 cases of cardiac lymphoma from Jan 2000 to Jun 2016. The patient's general information, clinical manifestation, pathological diagnosis, laboratory examination, cardiac involvement feature, cardiac complications, treatment, therapeutic effect and prognosis were analyzed. Results: Of 3 918 cases of lymphoma patients, 10 cases of cardiac involvement were identified, including primary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) in 1 case, secondary cardiac lymphoma (SCL) in 9 cases. Of the 10 patients in our analysis, the male-to-female ratio was 3∶2, with a median age of 55 (19-88) years old. The most presenting complaints were dyspnea in 7 cases, followed by chest pain in 5 cases, fatigue in 2 patients and edema in 2 cases. Pathological types included diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in 7 cases, T cell lymphoma (T-LBL) in 1 case, Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) in 1 case, and Burkitt lymphoma (BL) in 1 case. The sites of the heart affected by lymphoma in the PCL patient were right and left atriums with multiple nodules; and for SCL, the sites were mainly pericardium associated with a pericardial effusion in 5 cases, a pericardial mass in 2 cases. Congestive heart failure affects 7 patients and cardiac arrhythmias were identified in 4 cases mainly sinus tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and atrioventricular block. Except one untreated because of old age and poor performance, the rest of 9 patients were treated by either chemotherapy in 4 cases or chemotherapy combined radiotherapy (including the extracardiac sites) in 5 patients. With the median follow-up of 9 months, the one PCL patient achieved partial response (PR) , progress free survival (PFS) for 6 months and the overall survival (OS) for 21 months; in the cohort of 6 SCL patients cardiac involved at diagnosis, complete response (CR) was achieved in 1 case (16.7%) , PR in 3 cases, progressing disease (PD) in 2 cases, with the median PFS for 5 months and the median OS for 19 months; and for the other 3 SCL patients cardiac involved at progression, PR was achieved in 2 case and death in 1 case, with the median PFS for 4 months and the median OS unavailable because of censored data. Conclusion: Cardiac lymphoma represents a rare subset of lymphoma, the most common type is DLBCL, and the main clinical manifestations are dyspnea and chest pain, always combined by arrhythmia and congestive heart failure. The main therapeutic regimen for cardiac lymphoma includes combined chemotherapy and the prognosis for patients with either PCL or SCL is usually poor.

RESUMEN

Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) for severe aplastic anemia (SAA) is mainly limited by the high incidence of graft failure and GvHD. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to support hematopoiesis in vivo and to display potent immunosuppressive effects to prevent or treat GvHD after HSCT. In a multicenter phase II trial, we developed an approach with co-transplantation of MSCs in patients undergoing haplo-HSCT. Forty-four patients with SAA were included. The conditioning regimen included busulfan, cyclophosphamide and thymoglobulin (ATG). The recipients received cyclosporin A (CsA), mycophenolate mofetil and short-term methotrexate for GvHD prophylaxis. Three out of 44 patients, who died early before hematopoietic engraftment, were not assessed. Evaluable patients (97.6%; 40/41) achieved hematopoietic reconstitution and sustained full donor chimerism. The median time for myeloid engraftment was 12 days (range 8-21 days) and for platelet engraftment was 19 days (range 8-154 days). The incidence was 29.3% for grade II-IV acute GvHD and 14.6% for chronic GvHD. The overall survival was 77.3% with a median 12-month (range 0.9-30.8) follow-up for surviving patients. These data suggest that co-transplantation of MSCs could reduce the risk of graft failure and severe GvHD in haplo-HSCT for SAA.
