RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether there was any secular change in cranial vault morphology among Koreans born between the 1930s and 1970s, a period of dramatic shift in Korea's socioeconomic conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using three-dimensional MRI volumetry, we obtained the intracranial volume (ICV) and craniometric measurements of 115 healthy Koreans: 58 individuals (32 males and 26 females) born in the 1930s (1926-1936) and 57 (28 males and 29 females) born in the 1970s (1972-1979). RESULTS: The intracranial volume of males was 1502.3 ± 110.3 cm3 for the 1930s group and 1594.1 ± 99.5 cm3 for the 1970s group, and for females, it was 1336.0 ± 53.0 cm3 for the 1930s group and 1425.9 ± 79.6 cm3 for the 1970s group. On average, ICV increased by 94 cm3 in males and by 90 cm3 in females. Cranial measurements for the 1970s group were significantly larger than the 1930s group for both sexes except in female cranial length. Each measurement was significantly correlated with ICV [cranial height (R = 0.720), breadth (R = 0.706), and length (R = 0.531)]. The cephalic index decreased from 0.846 to 0.828 in males, indicating the cranium became narrower relative to the cranial length. In females, the cephalic index increased from 0.831 to 0.850. Sex and birthyear were marginally interrelated in cephalic indices. DISCUSSION: From the 1930s to 1970s, the Korean Peninsula experienced important historical shifts, and we speculate that the consequent shift in socioeconomic status is the most likely factor responsible for Koreans' cranial vault remodeling.

RESUMEN

Cilostazol is a selective inhibitor of type 3 phosphodiesterase (PDE3) and has been widely used as an antiplatelet agent. Cilostazol mediates this activity through effects on the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling cascade. Recently, it has attracted attention as a neuroprotective agent. However, little is known about cilostazol's effect on excitotoxicity induced neuronal cell death. Therefore, this study evaluated the neuroprotective effect of cilostazol treatment against hippocampal neuronal damage in a mouse model of kainic acid (KA)-induced neuronal loss. Cilostazol pretreatment reduced KA-induced seizure scores and hippocampal neuron death. In addition, cilostazol pretreatment increased cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation and decreased neuroinflammation. These observations suggest that cilostazol may have beneficial therapeutic effects on seizure activity and other neurological diseases associated with excitotoxicity.

RESUMEN

Motor skill training promotes the formation of parallel fiber multiple-synapse boutons (MSBs) contacting dendritic spine pairs of Purkinje cells in the rat cerebellum. However, the dendritic origin of such spine pairs is unknown. Here, we used three-dimensional electron microscopy reconstruction of synaptic connectivity to demonstrate that motor skill training selectively induced MSBs contacting two spines arising from the same dendrite, consistent with strengthening of local synaptic efficacy. However, excitatory synapses near MSBs were smaller in motor-trained animals, suggesting compensatory depression of MSB-neighbor synapses. Concerted strengthening and weakening of adjacent synapses may enhance synaptic weight differences for information encoding while maintaining stable overall activity levels within local dendritic segments.

RESUMEN

An electrothermochromic paper display composed of colorimetrically reversible polydiacetylenes (PDAs), utilizing screen printing on photopaper and patterning of electrically conductive wires on the reverse side, was developed. Heat generated by passing a current through the wires on the back of the photopaper induced a blue-to-red color transition of the PDA on the front at regions corresponding to the wires. This resulted in the generation of red-colored images, which disappeared when the supplied electric current was removed. The voltage at which the PDAs changed color could be controlled by using structured diacetylene (DA) monomers. A PDA-based seven-segment display has also been developed. By applying voltages, red-colored numeric digits from 0 to 9 can be displayed on the surface of the PDA layer.

RESUMEN

We investigate the dependence of charge carrier mobility by trap states at various interface regions through channel engineering. Prior to evaluation of interface trap density, the electrical performance in pentaene field effect transistors (FET) with high-k gate oxide are also investigated depending on four channel engineering. As a channel engineering, gas treatment, coatings of thin polymer layer, and chemical surface modification using small molecules were carried out. After channel engineering, the performance of device as well as interface trap density calculated by conductance method are remarkably improved. It is found that the reduced interface trap density is closely related to decreasing the sub-threshold swing and improving the mobility. Particularly, we also found that performance of device such as mobility, subthreshold swing, and interface trap density after gas same is comparable to those of OTS.

RESUMEN

A biphenyl derivative containing two D-Ala-D-Ala moieties was found to form fluorescent nano/microfibers when subjected to self-assembly conditions in aqueous EtOH. Incubation of the nano/microfibers with vancomycin results in the disappearance of the fibers along with a significant decrease in the fluorescence intensity. The detection limit of vancomycin determined by the fluorescence quenching strategy was calculated to be ca. 57 µM. Regeneration of the original fiber structures were obtained in the presence of Ac-Lys(Ac)-D-Ala-D-Ala, a substance known to bind tightly to vancomycin. Other proteins including bovine serum albumin (BSA), casein, elastase, and chymotrypsin were found to cause no morphological and fluorescence changes in the supramolecules. The unique vancomycin-induced phase transition and fluorescence change were not observed with a biphenyl derivative having L-Ala-L-Ala moiety.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Suicide by organophosphate insecticide (OPI) poisoning is a major clinical concern (predominantly in developing countries), and 200000 deaths occur annually worldwide. Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been used to predict outcome in several clinical conditions. Here, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the RDW and 30-day mortality during OPI poisoning. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was performed between January 2008 and July 2013 in patients admitted to the emergency department after OPI poisoning. A Kaplan-Meier 30-day survival curve was analyzed in patients stratified according to the optimal cut-off point of RDW defined using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses were conducted to determine the independent prognostic factors for 30-day mortality. RESULTS: Among 102 patients, 21 died, yielding a mortality of 20.6%. Elevated RDW was significantly associated with early mortality in patients with OPI poisoning. Levels of RDW that exceeded 13.5% (hazard ratio, 2.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-6.60) were associated with increased mortality in the multivariate analysis. The area under the ROC curve of RDW was 0.675 (95% CI, 0.522-0.829). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that RDW is an independent predictor of 30-day mortality in patients with OPI poisoning.

RESUMEN

Lateral spinal artery (LSA) aneurysms are extremely rare lesions that can rupture and cause subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) even though the spinal arteries communicate directly with the subarachnoid space. To date, six cases of LSA aneurysms have been reported in the literature. (Table 1) Herein, three such cases are reported. All patients presented to the emergency department with headaches. The patients in the first two cases were confirmed to have SAH and LSA aneurysms on a brain computed tomography (CT) angiography performed at the hospital. Two patients had prior instances of cerebral infarction and coronary disease, respectively, and were undergoing antiplatelet therapy. The antiplatelet medication was halted for 2 weeks and 1 weeks, respectively, while conservative care was provided. Subsequently, a suboccipital craniectomy was performed, followed by aneurysm clipping. Following the surgery, both patients were discharged without any significant neurological deficits. Regarding the third patient, no aneurysm was found on brain CT angiography, and cerebral angiography was performed during the patient's hospital stay. She was hospitalized, where she received medication and conservative care, and was discharged with an improvement in bleeding without neurological symptoms. Subsequently, an LSA aneurysm was identified on a brain CT angiography performed at an outpatient clinic; however, the patient opted for treatment and was transferred to another hospital. LSA aneurysms are difficult to visualize using CT angiography; therefore, careful angiographic studies are required. Surgical clipping is the treatment of choice if the aneurysm is inaccessible by the endovascular treatment.

RESUMEN

Inkjet-printed paper-based volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor strips imaged with polydiacetylenes (PDAs) are developed. A microemulsion ink containing bisurethane-substituted diacetylene (DA) monomers, 4BCMU, was inkjet printed onto paper using a conventional inkjet office printer. UV irradiation of the printed image allowed fabrication of blue-colored poly-4BCMU on the paper and the polymer was found to display colorimetric responses to VOCs. Interestingly, a blue-to-yellow color change was observed when the strip was exposed to chloroform vapor, which was accompanied by the generation of green fluorescence. The principal component analysis plot of the color and fluorescence images of the VOC-exposed polymers allowed a more precise discrimination of VOC vapors.

RESUMEN

Since it was discovered in 2004, graphene has attracted enormous attention as an emerging material for future devices, but it has been found that conventional lithographic processes based on polymer resist degrade its intrinsic performance. Recently, our group studied a resist-free scanning tunneling microscopy-based lithography in various atmospheres by injecting volatile liquids into a chamber. In this study, multilayer graphene was scanned and etched by controlling bias voltage under methanol pressure. We focused on improving patterning results in terms of depth and line width, while the previous study was performed to find an optimum gas environment for patterning on a graphite surface. Specifically, we report patterning outputs depending on conditions of voltage, current, and pressure. The optimum conditions for methanol environment etching were a gas pressure in the range of 41-50 torr, a -4 V tip bias, and a 2 nA tunneling current.

RESUMEN

The cerebellum is associated with balance control and coordination, which might be important for gliding on smooth ice at high speeds. A number of case studies have shown that cerebellar damage induces impaired balance and coordination. As a positive model, therefore, we investigated whether plastic changes in the volumes of cerebellar subregions occur in short-track speed skating players who must have extraordinary abilities of balance and coordination, using three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging volumetry. The manual tracing was performed and the volumes of cerebellar hemisphere and vermian lobules were compared between short-track speed skating players (n=16) and matched healthy controls (n=18). We found larger right cerebellar hemisphere volume and vermian lobules VI-VII (declive, folium, and tuber) in short-track speed skating players in comparison with the matched controls. The finding suggests that the specialized abilities of balance and coordination are associated with structural plasticity of the right hemisphere of cerebellum and vermian VI-VII and these regions play an essential role in balance and coordination.

RESUMEN

Mitochondria in all eukaryotes are essential organelles responsible for adenosine triphosphate synthesis, calcium homeostasis and steroidogenesis. Because the structure and distribution of mitochondria are highly diverse depending on their function and cellular conditions, it is important to develop a rapid and accurate method to assess their morphology. In this study, we visualize whole mitochondria in cultured cells using high-voltage electron microscopy (HVEM). Compared with conventional transmission electron microscopic approaches, the present method does not require thin sectioning and thus requires less time for image acquisition and processing. Furthermore, compared with fluorescence-based light microscopic approaches, our method provides more accurate size information. Thus, we propose that HVEM is a useful tool for rapid and accurate analysis of mitochondrial morphology and distribution in a cell.

RESUMEN

Hafnium oxide (HfOx) films have a wide range of applications in solid-state devices, including metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). The growth of HfOx films from the metal precursor tetrakis(ethylmethylamino) hafnium with La(NO3)3·6H2O solution (LNS) as an oxidant was investigated. The atomic layer deposition (ALD) conditions were optimized, and the chemical state, surface morphology, and microstructure of the prepared films were characterized. Furthermore, to better understand the effects of LNS on the deposition process, HfOx films deposited using a conventional oxidant (H2O) were also prepared. The ALD process using LNS was observed to be self-limiting, with an ALD temperature window of 200-350 °C and a growth rate of 1.6 Å per cycle, two times faster than that with H2O. HfOx films deposited using the LNS oxidant had smaller crystallites than those deposited using H2O, as well as more suboxides or defects because of the higher number of grain boundaries. In addition, there was a difference in the preferred orientations of the HfOx films deposited using LNS and H2O, and consequently, a difference in surface energy. Finally, a film growth model based on the surface energy difference was proposed to explain the observed growth rate and crystallite size trends.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Spine surgery is associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates in elderly patients. The modified Frailty Index (mFI) is an evaluation tool to determine the frailty of an individual and how preoperative status may impact postoperative survival and outcomes. This study aimed to determine the usefulness of mFI in predicting postoperative complications in patients aged ≥75 years undergoing surgery with instrumentation. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the perioperative course of 137 patients who underwent thoracolumbar-instrumentation spine surgery between 2011 and 2016. The preoperative risk factors were the 11 variables of the mFI, as well as body mass index (kg/cm2), preoperative hemoglobin, platelet, albumin, creatinine, anesthesia time, operation time, estimated blood loss, and transfusion amount. The 60-day occurrences of complication rates were used for outcome assessment. RESULTS: Major complications after spinal instrumentation surgery occurred in 34 of 138 patients (24.6%). The mean mFI score was 0.18±0.12. When we divided patients into a pre-frail group (mFI, 0.09-0.18; n=94) and a frail group (mFI ≥0.27; n=44), only the rate of sepsis was statistically higher in the frail group than in the pre-frail group. There were significantly more major complications in patients with low albumin levels or in patients with infection or who had experienced trauma. The mFI was a more useful predictor of postoperative complications than the American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status score. CONCLUSION: The mFI can successfully predict postoperative morbidity and mortality in patients aged ≥75 years undergoing spine surgery. The mFI improves perioperative risk stratification that provides important information to assist in the preoperative counselling of patients and their families.

RESUMEN

The cerebellum is involved in the learning and retention of motor skills. Using animal and human models, a number of studies have shown that long-term motor skill training induces structural and functional plasticity in the cerebellum. The aim of this study was to investigate whether macroscopic alteration in the volume of cerebellum occurs in basketball players who had learned complex motor skills and practiced them intensively for a long time. Three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging volumetry was performed in basketball players (n = 19) and healthy controls (n = 20), and the volumes of cerebellum and vermian lobules were compared between two groups. Although there was no macroscopic plasticity detected in the cerebellum as a whole, detailed parcellation of cerebellum revealed morphological enlargement in the vermian lobules VI-VII (declive, folium, and tuber) of basketball players (P < 0.0166), which might then be interpreted as evidence for plasticity. This finding suggests that the extensive practice and performance of sports-related motor skills activate structural plasticity of vermian lobules in human cerebellum and suggests that vermian VI-VII plays an important role in motor learning.

RESUMEN

We report the characteristics of the organic field effect transistor (OFET) after electrical and time stress. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) was used as a gate dielectric layer. The surface of the gate oxide layer was treated with hydrogen (H2) and nitrogen (N2) mixed gas to minimize the dangling bond at the interface layer of gate oxide. According to the two stress parameters of electrical and time stress, threshold voltage shift was observed. In particular, the mobility and subthreshold swing of OFET were significantly decreased due to hole carrier localization and degradation of the channel layer between gate oxide and pentacene by electrical stress. Electrical stress is a more critical factor in the degradation of mobility than time stress caused by H2O and O2 in the air.

RESUMEN

The majority of acute post-traumatic subdural hematomas (ASDH) require urgent surgical evacuation. Spontaneous resolution of ASDH has been reported in some cases. We report here on a case of a patient with a large amount of ASDH that was rapidly reduced. A 61-yr-old man was found unconscious following a high speed motor vehicle accident. On initial examination, his Glasgow Coma Score scale was 4/15. His pupils were fully dilated and non-reactive to bright light. Brain computed tomography (CT) showed a massive right-sided ASDH. The decision was made to treat him conservatively because of his poor clinical condition. Another brain CT approximately 14 hr after the initial scan demonstrated a remarkable reduction of the previous ASDH and there was the new appearance of high density in the subdural space adjacent to the falx and the tentorium. Thirty days after his admission, brain CT revealed chronic SDH and the patient underwent surgery. The patient is currently able to obey simple commands. In conclusion, spontaneous rapid resolution/reduction of ASDH may occur in some patients. The mechanisms are most likely the result of dilution by cerebrospinal fluid and the redistribution of hematoma especially in patients with brain atrophy.

RESUMEN

Hepatitis B virus triggers an increase of NF-kappaB inducing kinase (NIK)-dependent NF-kappaB activation, followed by the promotion of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Here, we examined the inhibitory effect of NIK-specific siRNA on NF-kappaB signaling and HCC. The results of this study indicated that these siRNAs suppressed HBV-derived HCC by regulating NIK activation. To exert a protective effect from degradation enzyme, cationic liposomes were contrived and modified to contain beta-sitosterol glucoside to target the asialoglycoprotein receptors in liver cancer cells. The cationic dimyristoyl diacyltrimethylammonium propane liposomes were prepared by a reverse-phase evaporation method with slight modification. beta-Sitosterol glucoside was added to the lipid mixture at the beginning of the liposome preparation for the purpose of liver targeting. These liposomes assisted the delivery of the siRNA to specific cells and protected it from various lyases, followed by the ultimate suppression of HCC.

RESUMEN

Vertebral artery injuries associated with C1 lateral mass screw insertion rarely occur during C1-2 fusion. The posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) is uncommonly located at the C1 lateral mass insertion position. A 71-year-old woman with atlanto-axial subluxation and cord compression underwent C1-2 fusion. Sixth nerve palsy and diplopia were detected postoperatively, and decreased consciousness occurred on postoperative day 4. Brain magnetic resonance image (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) revealed PICA infarction. In the preoperative CT angiography, the PICA originated between the C1 and C2 level. In the postoperative CT scan, the PICA was not visible. The patient was treated conservatively for two weeks and recovered. PICA originating between the C1 and C2 level comprises 1.1-1.3% of cases. Therefore, vertebral artery anomalies should be evaluated prior to C1-2 fusion to prevent vessel injuries.

RESUMEN

Involuntary movement of the cervical spine can cause damage to the cervical spinal cord. Cervical myelopathy may occur at an early age in involuntary movement disorders, such as tics. We report the case of a 21-year-old man with Tourette syndrome, who developed progressive quadriparesis, which was more severe in the upper extremities. The patient had abnormal motor tics with hyperflexion and hyperextension of the cervical spine for more than 10 years. High-signal intensity intramedullary lesions were observed at C3-4-5-6 level on T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging. Examinations were performed for high-signal intensity intramedullary lesions that may occur at a young age, but no other diseases were detected. Botulinum toxin injection to the neck musculature and medication for tic disorders were administered. However, the myelopathy was further aggravated, as the involuntary cervical movement still remained. Therefore, laminoplasty was performed at C3-4-5-6, with posterior fixation at C2-3-4-5-6-7 to alleviate the symptoms. The neurological signs and symptoms improved dramatically. The management of tic disorders should be the first priority during treatment. However, surgical treatment may be necessary, if symptoms worsen after appropriate treatment.
