RESUMEN

We explored unintentional drifts of finger forces during force production and matching task. Based on earlier studies, we predicted that force matching with the other hand would reduce or stop the force drift in instructed fingers while uninstructed (enslaved) fingers remain unaffected. Twelve young, healthy, right-handed participants performed two types of tasks with both hands (task hand and match hand). The task hand produced constant force at 20% of MVC level with the Index and Ring fingers pressing in parallel on strain gauge force sensors. The Middle finger force wasn't instructed, and its enslaved force was recorded. Visual feedback on the total force by the instructed fingers was either present throughout the trial or only during the first 5 s (no-feedback condition). The other hand matched the perceived force level of the task hand starting at either 4, 8, or 15 s from the trial initiation. No feedback was ever provided for the match hand force. After the visual feedback was removed, the task hand showed a consistent drift to lower magnitudes of total force. Contrary to our prediction, over all conditions, force matching caused a brief acceleration of force drift in the task hand, which then reached a plateau. There was no effect of matching on drifts in enslaved finger force. We interpret the force drifts within the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates as consequences of drifts in the command (referent coordinate) to the antagonist muscles. This command is not adequately incorporated into force perception.

The paper is dedicated to modeling electricity spot prices and pricing forward contracts on energy markets. The underlying dynamics of electricity spot prices is governed by a stochastic mean reverting diffusion with jumps having mixed-exponential distribution. Application of financial mathematics and stochastic methods enabled the derivation of the analytical formula for the forward contract's price in a crisp case. Since the model parameters' incertitude is considered, their fuzzy counterparts are introduced. Utilization of fuzzy arithmetic enabled deriving an analytical expression for the futures price and proposing a modified method for decision-making under uncertainty. Finally, numerical examples are analyzed to illustrate our pricing approach and the proposed financial decision-making method.

A high performance, snapshot Image Mapping Spectrometer was developed that provides fast image acquisition (100 Hz) of 16 bit hyperspectral data cubes (210x210x46) over a spectral range of 515-842 nm. Essential details of the opto-mechanical design are presented. Spectral accuracy, precision, and image reconstruction metrics such as resolution are discussed. Fluorescently stained cell samples were used to directly compare the data obtained using newly developed and the reference image mapping spectrometer. Additional experimental results are provided to demonstrate the abilities of the new spectrometer to acquire highly-resolved, motion-artifact-free hyperspectral images at high temporal sampling rates.

A fiber-based snapshot imaging spectrometer was developed with a maximum of 31853 (~188 x 170) spatial sampling and 61 spectral channels in the 450nm-750nm range. A compact, custom-fabricated fiber bundle was used to sample the object image at the input and create void spaces between rows at the output for dispersion. The bundle was built using multicore 6x6 fiber block ribbons. To avoid overlap between the cores in the direction of dispersion, we selected a subset of cores using two alternative approaches; a lenslet array and a photomask. To calibrate the >30000 spatial samples of the system, a rapid spatial calibration method was developed based on phase-shifting interferometry (PSI). System crosstalk and spectral resolution were also characterized. Preliminary hyperspectral imaging results of the Rice University campus landscape, obtained with the spectrometer, are presented to demonstrate the system's spectral imaging capability for distant scenes. The spectrum of different plant species with different health conditions, obtained with the spectrometer, was in accordance with reference instrument measurements. We also imaged Houston traffic to demonstrate the system's snapshot hyperspectral imaging capability. Potential applications of the system include terrestrial monitoring, land use, air pollution, water resources, and lightning spectroscopy. The fiber-based system design potentially allows tuning between spatial and spectral sampling to meet specific imaging requirements.

A 3D printing technique for manufacturing air-clad coherent fiber optic faceplates is presented. The custom G-code programming is implemented on a fused deposition modeling (FDM) desktop printer to additively draw optical fibers using high-transparency thermoplastic filaments. The 3D printed faceplate consists of 20000 fibers and achieves spatial resolution 1.78 LP/mm. Transmission loss and crosstalk are characterized and compared among the faceplates printed from four kinds of transparent filaments as well as different faceplate thicknesses. The printing temperature is verified by testing the transmission of the faceplates printed under different temperatures. Compared with the conventional stack-and-draw fabrication, the FDM 3D printing technique simplifies the fabrication procedure. The ability to draw fibers with arbitrary organization, structure and overall shape provides additional degree of freedom to opto-mechanical design. Our results indicate a promising capability of 3D printing as the manufacturing technology for fiber optical devices.

We present an analysis of the shape, surface quality, and imaging capabilities of custom 3D printed lenses. 3D printing technology enables lens prototypes to be fabricated without restrictions on surface geometry. Thus, spherical, aspherical and rotationally non-symmetric lenses can be manufactured in an integrated production process. This technique serves as a noteworthy alternative to multistage, labor-intensive, abrasive processes such as grinding, polishing and diamond turning. Here, we evaluate the quality of lenses fabricated by Luxexcel using patented Printoptical© technology that is based on an inkjet printing technique by comparing them to lenses made with traditional glass processing technologies (grinding, polishing etc.). The surface geometry and roughness of the lenses were evaluated using white-light and Fizeau interferometers. We have compared peak-to-valley wavefront deviation, root-mean-squared wavefront error, radii of curvature and the arithmetic average of the roughness profile (Ra) of plastic and glass lenses. Additionally, the imaging performance of selected pairs of lenses was tested using 1951 USAF resolution target. The results indicate performance of 3D printed optics that could be manufactured with surface roughness comparable to that of injection molded lenses (Ra < 20 nm). The RMS wavefront error of 3D printed prototypes was at a minimum 18.8 times larger than equivalent glass prototypes for a lens with a 12.7 mm clear aperture, but when measured within 63% of its clear aperture, 3D printed components' RMS wavefront error was comparable to glass lenses.

A prototype fiber-based imaging spectrometer was developed to provide snapshot hyperspectral imaging tuned for biomedical applications. The system is designed for imaging in the visible spectral range from 400 to 700 nm for compatibility with molecular imaging applications as well as satellite and remote sensing. An 81 × 96 pixel spatial sampling density is achieved by using a custom-made fiber-optic bundle. The design considerations and fabrication aspects of the fiber bundle and imaging spectrometer are described in detail. Through the custom fiber bundle, the image of a scene of interest is collected and divided into discrete spatial groups, with spaces generated in between groups for spectral dispersion. This reorganized image is scaled down by an image taper for compatibility with following optical elements, dispersed by a prism, and is finally acquired by a CCD camera. To obtain an (x, y, λ) datacube from the snapshot measurement, a spectral calibration algorithm is executed for reconstruction of the spatial-spectral signatures of the observed scene. System characterization of throughput, resolution, and crosstalk was performed. Preliminary results illustrating changes in oxygen-saturation in an occluded human finger are presented to demonstrate the system's capabilities.

Miniature piezoelectric actuators are commonly used as a compact means to relay images for numerous endoscopic applications. These scanners normally consist of an electrically driven lead zirconate titanate (PZT) tube that oscillates an optical fiber at its resonant frequency. The diameter and length of the PZT and fiber, the attachment of the fiber to the PZT, as well as the driving signal determine the main characteristics of the scan-frequency and amplitude of vibration. We present a new, robust, and repeatable method for producing miniature PZT actuators. The described technology allows for continuous tuning of the scanner mechanical properties during the assembly stage, enabling adjustment of resonant frequency and subsequent amplitude of vibration without a priori knowledge of the fiber's mechanical properties. The method consists of manufacturing high-precision fiber-holding plastic inserts with diamond turning lathes that allow for the fiber length to be quickly varied and locked during operation in order to meet the preferred performance. This concept of tuned PZTs was demonstrated with an imaging technique that combined two scanners oscillating in unison at the ends of a single optical fiber to relay images without the need to correlate the driving signal with a detector.

A miniature laser ablation probe relying on an optical fiber to deliver light requires a high coupling efficiency objective with sufficient magnification in order to provide adequate power and field for surgery. A diffraction-limited optical design is presented that utilizes high refractive index zinc sulfide to meet specifications while reducing the miniature objective down to two lenses. The design has a hypercentric conjugate plane on the fiber side and is telecentric on the tissue end. Two versions of the objective were built on a diamond lathe-a traditional cylindrical design and a custom-tapered mount. Both received an antireflective coating. The objectives performed as designed in terms of observable resolution and field of view as measured by imaging a 1951 USAF resolution target. The slanted edge technique was used to find Strehl ratios of 0.75 and 0.78, respectively, indicating nearly diffraction-limited performance. Finally, preliminary ablation experiments indicated threshold fluence of gold film was comparable to similar reported probes.

This article evaluates the reliability and consistency of nutrition- and supplementation-related advice for pregnant women provided by ten selected health-related Internet portals. The portals were chosen based on their perceived reliability and prominence in Google searches, with representation from both English and Polish language sources. The evaluation criteria included the adherence of the presented information to official recommendations and its evidence-based character based on specific items representing dietary aspects important in pregnancy. While the overall reliability was deemed acceptable, significant variations existed both among the portals and specific evaluated items. Notably, HealthLine, Medline Plus, and NCEZ emerged as the most evidence-based, while WebMD and Medycyna Praktyczna were identified as less reliable. Despite a number of issues, the analysed portals remain valuable sources of nutritional information for pregnant women, offering user-friendly accessibility superior to alternatives such as social media on the one hand and scientific articles on the other. Improved consistency and attention to detail, especially in relation to vitamin intake and supplementation, would improve the overall quality of health portals.

Background: Male fertility is known to have been negatively influenced by the progress of civilization. Another condition whose incidence has been on the increase for the same reason is insulin resistance (IR). In addition, men increasingly often resign from the pursuit of active forms of leisure, preferring more sedentary ones. Considering these trends, this aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between lifestyle factors, insulin resistance, and male fertility in men with and without the condition. A further aim was to select those lifestyle factors that would make it possible to predict the level of male fertility, especially when IR is concerned. Methods: This study was performed in a group of 73 participants, divided into groups based on their insulin resistance status. Their physical activity, diet, perceived stress, sleep quality, libido level, and duration of sexual abstinence were assessed on the basis of a number of parameters, including indices proposed by the authors. In addition, relevant anthropometric measurements were taken and tests related to glucose metabolism and semen quality were carried out. On the basis of these data, statistical tests were performed to establish or disprove relationships between lifestyle choices and semen quality, as measured my sperm motility. Results: The results of this study highlighted the associations between a number of parameters, i.e., micronutrient and vitamin intake, diet quality, body composition, insulin resistance, and the duration of sexual abstinence, and semen quality, as measured by sperm motility. Significantly, the presence or absence of IR was linked to male fertility. A multivariate model was developed, incorporating parameters such as the Matsuda index, vitamin intake, and sexual abstinence duration, to predict motility scores. Conclusions: This study underscores the negative impact of modern civilization's lifestyle choices on male fertility. Notably, vitamin and mineral consumption, especially from antioxidant-rich diets like the Mediterranean diet, emerged as key modifiable factors affecting fertility. Routine diagnostics for insulin resistance in fertility-related interventions is recommended. This study also highlights the importance of considering sexual abstinence duration during semen collection for accurate diagnostic results. Future research should focus on validating the proposed multivariate model and exploring the effects of lifestyle modifications, particularly vitamin supplementation, on fertility outcomes in men, especially in the context of IR.

Ovulatory infertility is a serious clinical problem whose direct causes are still largely unknown. In addition to pathologies that make it impossible for a couple to establish a pregnancy, there are a number of other factors that have a bearing on fertility, including lifestyle factors, and particularly diet. Although numerous studies have been performed linking such factors to ovulatory infertility, most of them lack the necessary clinical significance, instead focusing on observational data and suggesting or establishing associative relationships. This article consists of a literature review focusing on connections between lifestyle factors such as diet, physical exercise, oxidative stress, sleep, and supplementation, and ovulatory infertility. Special emphasis was given to issues such as obesity and insulin resistance and their mutual relationship with other factors linked to ovulatory infertility. In addition, based on the conclusions of the literature review, the authors have proposed a classification of relationships between ovulation disorders and lifestyle factors in ovulatory infertility within the framework of the WHO classification of ovulation disorders. Furthermore, areas that merit further research have been indicated as well as those that do not. WHO Group II disorders gained prominence in the results of the study as the number of links with lifestyle factors and ovulatory infertility found in the course of the review greatly exceeded those for Groups I and III. The data presented in the article show that the issues of proper diet and physical exercise are those that could benefit from robust clinical studies focused specifically on ovulation infertility, while studies concerning the relationship between oxidative stress, sleep, and supplementation and ovulatory infertility do not seem to be promising directions as far as clinical significance is concerned.

Efficient movement control and the mechanisms responsible for the sense of rhythm are still not fully understood. The purpose of this paper was to estimate the influence of fatigue on the sense of rhythm defined as specific order of movements and their rhythmic perception. It was examined in a holistic way, by analyzing both global and local aspects of the movement. Twenty adult participants (20.2 ± 0.4 years, ten females) took part in the experiment. The fatigue protocol was applied in four blocks, which consisted of 30-s consecutive jumping with 80% of maximal effort. Immediately after each fatigue block, the rhythm performance was evaluated in global and local tests. The global test was based on 45 continuous jumps and was divided into an assisted and an unassisted phase using the Optojump Next System. The local test was performed by bilateral tapping of lower limbs by means of the Vienna Test System. The hypothesis about the significant effect of fatigue on the sense of rhythm was falsified. In particular, we observed the lack of differences between global and local aspects of the movement. Moreover, female participants showed a better sense of rhythm than males. Regardless of the fatigue protocol, participants made larger errors with a lower movement frequency in local rhythmic tasks. The coefficient of variation showed that sex differences were only significant in the unassisted phase of the global rhythmic task. We suggest that movement variability metrics may provide additional information about the sense of rhythm, which should be explored more in future studies, not only dependent on fatigue.

Objective: The outcomes of physical therapy are commonly assessed with subjective scales and questionnaires. Hence, a continuous search to identify diagnostic tests that would facilitate objective assessment of symptom reduction in those patients with Achilles tendinopathy who undergo mechanotherapy. The main aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of shock wave and ultrasound treatments, using objective posturographic assessment during step-up and step-down initiation. Materials and methods: The patients with non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy and pain lasting for more than 3 months were randomly assigned to one of the experimental groups, i.e., radial shock wave therapy (RSWT), ultrasound therapy, or placebo ultrasound. All groups also received deep friction massage as the primary therapy. The transitional locomotor task was performed with the affected and unaffected limb in random order, on two force platforms under two conditions (step-up and step-down). The recording of center of foot pressure displacements was divided into three phases: quiet standing before step-up/step-down, transit, and quiet standing until measurement completion. Pre-intervention measurements were performed and then short-term follow-ups at weeks 1 and 6 post-therapy. Results: The three-way repeated measures ANOVA showed few statistically significant two-factor interactions between therapy type, time point of measurement and the type of the locomotor task. Significant increases in postural sway were observed in the entire study population throughout the follow-up period. Three-way ANOVAs revealed a group effect (shock wave vs. ultrasound) on almost all variables of the quiet standing phase prior to step-up/step-down initiation. Overall, postural stability before the step-up and step-down tasks appeared to be more efficient in patients who had undergone RSWT compared to the ultrasound group. Conclusion: Objective posturographic assessment during step-up and step-down initiation did not demonstrate therapeutic superiority of any of the three therapeutic interventions used in patients with non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy.Clinical Trial Registration: The trial was prospectively registered in the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (no. Creation of sub-epithelial voids within scarred vocal folds via ultrafast laser ablation may help in localization of injectable therapeutic biomaterials towards an improved treatment for vocal fold scarring. Several ultrafast laser surgery probes have been developed for precise ablation of surface tissues; however, these probes lack the tight beam focusing required for sub-surface ablation in highly scattering tissues such as vocal folds. Here, we present a miniaturized ultrafast laser surgery probe designed to perform sub-epithelial ablation in vocal folds. The requirement of high numerical aperture for sub-surface ablation, in addition to the small form factor and side-firing architecture required for clinical use, made for a challenging optical design. An Inhibited Coupling guiding Kagome hollow core photonic crystal fiber delivered micro-Joule level ultrashort pulses from a high repetition rate fiber laser towards a custom-built miniaturized objective, producing a 1/e2 focal beam radius of 1.12 ± 0.10 µm and covering a 46 × 46 µm2 scan area. The probe could deliver up to 3.8 µJ pulses to the tissue surface at 40% transmission efficiency through the entire system, providing significantly higher fluences at the focal plane than were required for sub-epithelial ablation. To assess surgical performance, we performed ablation studies on freshly excised porcine hemi-larynges and found that large area sub-epithelial voids could be created within vocal folds by mechanically translating the probe tip across the tissue surface using external stages. Finally, injection of a model biomaterial into a 1 × 2 mm2 void created 114 ± 30 µm beneath the vocal fold epithelium surface indicated improved localization when compared to direct injection into the tissue without a void, suggesting that our probe may be useful for pre-clinical evaluation of injectable therapeutic biomaterials for vocal fold scarring therapy. With future developments, the surgical system presented here may enable treatment of vocal fold scarring in a clinical setting.

Our aim was to observe, through objective testing using an assessment module incorporated in a new exergaming system, whether elderly people's static and functional balance is improved by a balance exergaming training program based on movements performed in everyday life. Thirteen healthy elderly women participated in 12 sessions of balance-based exergaming training (three times a week, 30 min per session). All objective outcomes, the quiet standing test, functional balance test (FBT), and limit of stability (LOS) test, were measured on three occasions: before intervention, after six training sessions, and after the completion of the four-week program. The results showed a significant improvement in LOS performance after the intervention. In FBT, participants exhibited a significant decrease (p < 0.01; Kendall's W = 0.5) in the average time to target hit after six trainings. The average center of pressure velocity increased after six and 12 sessions, however did not reach significance (p = 0.053); nevertheless the size of the effect was large (ηp2 = 0.22). The parameters of the quiet standing test were not significantly affected by the training. The results support the need for more definite and objective studies assessing exergaming for balance in elderly.

White blood cell (WBC) and neutrophil counts are important laboratory tests used by clinicians to assess a variety of conditions. However, current methods to measure WBC and neutrophil counts are difficult to perform at the point of care, being either cost or labor prohibitive. To meet this need, we developed the LeukoScope: a portable, imaging-based system to measure WBC and neutrophil counts from a drop of blood. Here, we present the performance of the LeukoScope in 136 pediatric and 164 neonatal subjects at a central hospital in Malawi. For pediatric patients, 95.4, 66.7, and 80.0% of samples with normal, low, and high WBC counts, respectively, were correctly identified, and 88.6, 100.0, and 89.3% of samples with normal, low, and high neutrophil counts, respectively, were correctly identified. Accuracy was lower overall for neonatal samples; 92.1, 64.3, and 26.7% of samples with normal, low, and high WBC counts, respectively, were correctly identified, and 73.2 and 78.6% of samples with normal and high neutrophil counts, respectively, were correctly identified. Results of this study show that the LeukoScope can help meet need for point-of-care measurement of WBC counts in pediatric patients and highlight the challenges of point-of-care assessment of WBC counts in neonatal patients.

We present a miniaturized ultrafast laser surgery probe with improved miniaturized optics to deliver higher peak powers and enable higher surgical speeds than previously possible. A custom-built miniaturized CaF2 objective showed no evidence of the strong multiphoton absorption observed in our previous ZnS-based probe, enabling higher laser power delivery to the tissue surface for ablation. A Kagome fiber delivered ultrashort pulses from a high repetition rate fiber laser to the objective, producing a focal beam radius of 1.96 µm and covering a 90×90 µm2 scan area. The probe delivered the maximum available fiber laser power, providing fluences >6 J/cm2 at the tissue surface at 53% transmission efficiency. We characterized the probe's performance through a parametric ablation study on bovine cortical bone and defined optimal operating parameters for surgery using an experimental- and simulation-based approach. The entire opto-mechanical system, enclosed within a 5-mm diameter housing with a 2.6-mm diameter probe tip, achieved material removal rates >0.1 mm3/min, however removal rates were ultimately limited by the available laser power. Towards a next generation surgery probe, we simulated maximum material removal rates when using a higher power fiber laser and found that removal rates >2 mm3/min could be attained through appropriate selection of laser surgery parameters. With future development, the device presented here can serve as a precise surgical tool with clinically viable speeds for delicate applications such as spinal decompression surgeries.

INTRODUCTION: Although previous studies have contributed to our understanding of the effects of implementing the virtual reality as a rehabilitation tool in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), additional research is needed to examine the effects of applying balance-based exergaming training on quantitative biomechanical measures of balance. RESEARCH QUESTION: To investigate the effects of balance-based conventional and exergaming training on posture parameters. METHODS: The study involved 24 patients with PD (Hoehn and Yahr stages II-III).Participants underwent twelve training sessions during the 4-week training period. The experimental group (n=12) was trained with a custom-made exergaming balance based training system, the control group (n=12) underwent a conventional balance training. All objective outcomes were measured before intervention and the day after completion of training program. Postural stability was assessed using the quiet standing test, dynamic balance was assessed using limits of stability (LOS) and functional balance (FBT) tests. RESULTS: After training, participants in both groups showed significantly better results in static balance performance. However, only exergaming training significantly improved LOS performance (higher values of Range of forward lean (p = 0.039, dz = 0.67) and leaning rate (p=0.007, dz=0.96). Also FBT test improved significantly only in experimental group (decrease in time to target hit (p=0.02, dz=0.76) and significant increase of average COP velocity (p=0.008, dz=0.93). CONCLUSION: This study found that exergaming training created for patients with PD enhanced static and dynamic balance whereas conventional balance training improved static balance. Posturography is sensitive enough to reveal differential effects of training for both groups. These findings support the inclusion of our exergaming training in the exercise program for participants with PD.

The uncontrolled manifold hypothesis is a method used to quantify motor synergies, defined as a specific central nervous system organization that maintains the task-specific stability of motor actions. The UCM allows for inter-trial variance analysis between consecutive trials. However, despite the large body of literature within this framework, there is no report on the number of movement repetitions required for reliable results. Based on the hypothetical hierarchical control of motor synergies, this study aims to determine the minimum number of trials necessary to achieve a good to excellent level of reliability. Thirteen young, healthy participants performed fifteen bilateral isometric contractions of elbow flexion when visual feedback was provided. The force and electromyography data were recorded to investigate synergies at different levels of hierarchical control. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the variance indices. Based on the obtained results, at least twelve trials are required to analyze the inter-trial variance in both force and muscle synergies within the UCM framework.
