RESUMEN

Although the dissolution kinetics of calcite in acid waters has been studied for more than a century, the process is not fully understood, and for particles and microcrystals the process is often assumed to be diffusion-controlled. Herein, the dissolution kinetics of calcite single microcrystals in aqueous solution (pH ca. 3) has been investigated for the first time by a combination of real-time optical microscopy coupled with numerical simulations. The small size and well-defined geometry of rhombohedral calcite single crystals enables the measurement of the dissolution rates of the individual crystal faces exposed to the solvent and an assessment of the relative importance of corners and edges compared to the {104} faces. Data are used to parameterise finite element method (FEM) models for the quantitative analysis of dissolution kinetics. The simulations provide an accurate determination of the near-interface concentration of solution species during dissolution, as well as concentration gradients. The intrinsic first-order dissolution rate constant for the attack of protons on the exposed {104} faces, ksurf = (6.4 ± 2.8) × 10-4 m s-1, is in good agreement with previous microscopic and macroscopic measurements, corroborating the method. This study is a further demonstration of the power of simple in situ optical microscopy for quantitative interfacial (dissolution/growth) kinetic measurements, using a configuration of practical relevance for processes as diverse as the remediation of acid water and scale removal.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are the most common subtype of pituitary tumour. Hypopituitarism is observed in NFPAs due to tumour- or treatment-related factors and may increase mortality risk. Here, we analysed the associations of hypopituitarism, hormone replacement and mortality in a large NFPA cohort derived from two large European centres. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Case note review of all patients treated for NFPA in University Hospitals Birmingham and Beaumont Hospital Dublin between 1999 and 2014 was performed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical presentation, treatment strategies, pituitary function and vitality status were recorded in each patient. A multivariate Cox regression model was used to examine the association between hypopituitarism, hormone replacement and premature mortality. RESULTS: A total of 519 patients were included in the analysis. Median duration of follow-up was 7·0 years (0·5-43). A total of 81 deaths were recorded (15·6%). On multivariate analysis, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and gonadotropin (Gn) deficiencies were associated with an increased relative risk of death (OR 2·26, 95% CI 1·15-4·47, P = 0·01 and OR 2·56, 95% CI 1·10-5·96, P = 0·01, respectively). Increased hydrocortisone (HC) (P-trend = 0·02) and lower levothyroxine (LT4) doses (P-trend = 0·03) were associated with increased risk of death. Mortality increased with the degree of pituitary failure observed (P-trend = 0·04). CONCLUSION: ACTH and gonadotropin-deficient patients have higher mortality rates compared to those with intact hormonal axes. Excessive HC and suboptimal LT4 replacement may also increase risk of death. Complex associations between hormone deficiency and replacement underpin the increased mortality risk in NFPA patients.

RESUMEN

A single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure of a 1:1 cocrystal of two fungicides, namely dithianon (DI) and pyrimethanil (PM), is reported [systematic name: 5,10-dioxo-5H,10H-naphtho[2,3-b][1,4]dithiine-2,3-dicarbonitrile-4,6-dimethyl-N-phenylpyrimidin-2-amine (1/1), C14H4N2O2S2·C12H13N2]. Following an NMR crystallography approach, experimental solid-state magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra are presented together with GIPAW (gauge-including projector augmented wave) calculations of NMR chemical shieldings. Specifically, experimental 1H and 13C chemical shifts are determined from two-dimensional 1H-13C MAS NMR correlation spectra recorded with short and longer contact times so as to probe one-bond C-H connectivities and longer-range C...H proximities, whereas H...H proximities are identified in a 1H double-quantum (DQ) MAS NMR spectrum. The performing of separate GIPAW calculations for the full periodic crystal structure and for isolated molecules allows the determination of the change in chemical shift upon going from an isolated molecule to the full crystal structure. For the 1H NMR chemical shifts, changes of 3.6 and 2.0 ppm correspond to intermolecular N-H...O and C-H...O hydrogen bonding, while changes of -2.7 and -1.5 ppm are due to ring current effects associated with C-H...π interactions. Even though there is a close intermolecular S...O distance of 3.10 Å, it is of note that the molecule-to-crystal chemical shifts for the involved sulfur or oxygen nuclei are small.
