RESUMEN

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by moulds from the Mucorales order. Concerns have been mounting due to the alarming increase in severe morbidity and mortality associated with mucormycosis during the COVID-19 pandemic. This condition, known as COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM), has been linked to various environmental, host-related, and medical factors on a global scale. We have categorized the most significant potential risk factors for developing mucormycosis in individuals with a previous history of coronavirus infection into 10 major categories. These categories include acute hyperglycemia, the impact of cytokine release, immune response deficiencies in COVID-19 patients, microvasculopathy and dysfunction of endothelial cells, imbalances in iron metabolism, metabolic acidosis, organ damage resulting from COVID-19, underlying health conditions (such as diabetes), environmental factors, and medical treatments that can be iatrogenic in nature (such as inappropriate glucocorticoid use). Many of these factors can lead to potentially life-threatening infections that can complicate the treatment of COVID-19. Physicians should be vigilant about these factors because early detection of mucormycosis is crucial for effective management of this condition.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To investigate the subfoveal retinal and choroidal thickness in patients with unilateral Fuchs Uveitis Syndrome (FUS). METHODS: This comparative contralateral study was performed in affected eyes with FUS versus fellow eyes. For each eye parameters such as subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT), subfoveal choriocapillary thickness (SCCT), central macular thickness (CMT), and central macular volume (CMV) were measured; then the measured values of affected and fellow unaffected eye were compared. RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients (74 eyes) including 19 females (51.4%) with a mean age of 36.9 ± 7.6 years were enrolled. The mean SCT was lower in the affected eyes (344.51 ± 91.67) than in the fellow (375.59 ± 87.33) with adjusting for duration of disease and axial lengths (P < 0.001). The mean SCCT, CMT, and CMV were higher in eyes with FUS than in fellow eyes (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The result of our study demonstrated that affected eyes in patients with FUS tend to have thinner SCT and thicker SCCT and CMT compared to uninvolved fellow eyes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The correction of tear trough deformity poses a significant challenge in the context of facial rejuvenation. Our aim was to introduce a technique that corrects tear trough deformity during transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty using minced orbital fat grafts. METHODS: The medical records of patients who underwent lower blepharoplasty from January 2019 to December 2021 were reviewed. The study included patients with various grades of tear trough deformity, who underwent lower blepharoplasty using minced orbital fat grafts and followed up for at least 6 months. Modified Barton's grading for tear trough depression, patient satisfaction, and postoperative complications were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of ninety-eight patients, with a mean age of 48.07 ± 9.72 years, consisting of 93 (94.9%) females were included in the study. The average duration of follow-up was 7.2 months, ranging from 6 to 13 months. Tear trough depression significantly improved after the operation (preoperative tear trough depression grade mean (SD): 3.11 (0.60); postoperative tear trough depression grade mean (SD): 0.87 (0.66); P < 0.001). 78.5% of the participants reported their outcome as excellent or good, 20.4% reported as fair, and 1.0% (only one patient) reported as no improvement. None of the participants rated their outcome as worsening. No major complication was observed during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Minced orbital fat grafting during transconjunctival lower eyelid blepharoplasty has good effectiveness for correcting tear trough deformity without the risk of major complications. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The novel optic neuritis (ON) diagnostic criteria include intereye differences (IED) of optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters. IED has proven valuable for ON diagnosis in multiple sclerosis but has not been evaluated in aquaporin-4 antibody seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (AQP4+NMOSD). We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of intereye absolute (IEAD) and percentage difference (IEPD) in AQP4+NMOSD after unilateral ON >6 months before OCT as compared with healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Twenty-eight AQP4+NMOSD after unilateral ON (NMOSD-ON), 62 HC and 45 AQP4+NMOSD without ON history (NMOSD-NON) were recruited by 13 centres as part of the international Collaborative Retrospective Study on retinal OCT in Neuromyelitis Optica study. Mean thickness of peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) and macular ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) were quantified by Spectralis spectral domain OCT. Threshold values of the ON diagnostic criteria (pRNFL: IEAD 5 µm, IEPD 5%; GCIPL: IEAD: 4 µm, IEPD: 4%) were evaluated using receiver operating characteristics and area under the curve (AUC) metrics. RESULTS: The discriminative power was high for NMOSD-ON versus HC for IEAD (pRNFL: AUC 0.95, specificity 82%, sensitivity 86%; GCIPL: AUC 0.93, specificity 98%, sensitivity 75%) and IEPD (pRNFL: AUC 0.96, specificity 87%, sensitivity 89%; GCIPL: AUC 0.94, specificity 96%, sensitivity 82%). The discriminative power was high/moderate for NMOSD-ON versus NMOSD-NON for IEAD (pRNFL: AUC 0.92, specificity 77%, sensitivity 86%; GCIP: AUC 0.87, specificity 85%, sensitivity 75%) and for IEPD (pRNFL: AUC 0.94, specificity 82%, sensitivity 89%; GCIP: AUC 0.88, specificity 82%, sensitivity 82%). CONCLUSIONS: Results support the validation of the IED metrics as OCT parameters of the novel diagnostic ON criteria in AQP4+NMOSD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Thyroid-eye disease (TED) is the most common extra-thyroidal presentation of graves' disease. We performed this study to compare clinical characteristics of TED in hypothyroid vs. hyperthyroid patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective analytical cross-sectional study in which we compared demographics, severity (EUGOGO classification) and activity (clinical activity score) of TED, thyroid disease duration, TED duration and clinical signs between hypothyroid eye disease (Ho-TED) and hyperthyroid eye disease (Hr-TED). To minimize the effect of selection bias and potential confounders, 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was also performed. RESULTS: Three hundred and seventy-four patients (341 Hr-TED and 33 Ho-TED) with a female to male ratio of 1.4:1 were identified in our study. Female to male ratio was 1.3:1 in hyperthyroid and 4.5:1 in hypothyroid group (P = 0.005). The duration of thyroid disease was longer in Ho-TED (P = 0.002) while the duration of eye disease was not significantly different between the Hr-TED (mean = 24.33 ± 41.69, median = 8) and Ho-TED (mean = 19.06 ± 33.60, median = 12) (P = 0.923). Most of the patients in hypothyroid group developed eye involvement after thyroid disease (80.0% in hypo vs. 48.1% in hyper, P = 0.003). Severity (P = 0.13) and activity (P = 0.11) was not different between Hr-TED and Ho-TED patients. After PSM analysis, no clinical characteristics were significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of our study showed several differences between the Hr/Ho TED patients including sex, duration of thyroid disease and pattern of eye involvement. After matching the two groups with statistical methods, no clinical characteristics were different between Hr-TED and Ho-TED patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of keratoconus, as the most prevalent corneal ectatic disorder, at the subclinical stage gained great attention due to the increased acceptance of refractive surgeries. This study aimed to assess the pattern of the corneal biomechanical properties derived from Corneal Visualization Scheimpflug Technology (Corvis ST) and evaluate the diagnostic value of these parameters in distinguishing subclinical keratoconus (SKC) from normal eyes. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 73 SKC and 69 normal eyes. Subclinical keratoconus eyes were defined as corneas with no clinical evidence of keratoconus and suspicious topographic and tomographic features. Following a complete ophthalmic examination, topographic and tomographic corneal assessment via Pentacam HR, and corneal biomechanical evaluation utilizing Corvis ST were done. RESULTS: Subclinical keratoconus eyes presented significantly higher Deformation Amplitude (DA) ratio, Tomographic Biomechanical Index (TBI), and Corvis Biomechanical Index (CBI) rates than the control group. Conversely, Ambrósio Relational Thickness to the Horizontal profile (ARTh), and Stiffness Parameter at the first Applanation (SPA1) showed significantly lower rates in SKC eyes. In diagnosing SKC from normal eyes, TBI (AUC: 0.858, Cut-off value: > 0.33, Youden index: 0.55), ARTh (AUC: 0.813, Cut-off value: ≤ 488.1, Youden index: 0.58), and CBI (AUC: 0.804, Cut-off value: > 0.47, Youden index: 0.49) appeared as good indicators. CONCLUSIONS: TBI, CBI, and ARTh parameters could be valuable in distinguishing SKC eyes from normal ones.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to determine characteristic features of open globe injuries caused by firecrackers among pediatric population. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional chart review, medical records of children with ocular trauma who were hospitalized in Isfahan, Iran, during 2013-2017 were reviewed. We analyzed the collected data before and after propensity score (PS) matching. RESULTS: Of 396 pediatric patients with open globe injury, 22 injuries (5.9%) were caused by firecrackers. Hyphema, iris prolapse, and lens rupture were noted in 15 (68.18%), 10 (45.45%), and 2 (9.09) eyes, respectively. None of patients had endophthalmitis. The mean age of patients in firecracker group was higher and significant (11.86 ± 4.05 in firecracker vs 7.80 ± 4.68 in nonfirecracker, P < 0.001). Furthermore, most boys were in firecracker group (95.5%, P = 0.005). Patients in firecracker group resided more in urban areas (86.4%, P = 0.054) and had more intraocular foreign body (IOFB) in the eyes (40.9%, P < 0.001). After PS matching, patients in firecracker group had higher IOFB ( P = 0.008). In logistic regression models, patients with corneal lacerations had lower odds for long-time admission (≥4 days) than patients with both corneal and scleral lacerations in crude model (odds ratio, 0.35; 95% confidence interval, 0.17-0.69) and adjusted model (odds ratio, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.18 to 0.74). After PS matching, there was no significant association between risk factors and outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed several differences between the pediatric open globe injuries caused by firecrackers and other mechanisms of injuries, including the age, sex, living place, presence of IOFB, and length of hospital stay.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of oral isotretinoin therapy on central macular thickness (CMT) thickness and choroidal thickness (CT) using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: CT and CMT thickness of 43 eyes were evaluated at baseline, the third, and sixth month of isotretinoin therapy by spectral-domain OCT. For assessment of CT, OCT measurements were obtained at the fovea with six additional measurements at adjacent locations (at 500-1000 µm temporal to the fovea and 500-1000 µm nasal to the fovea). RESULTS: Forty-three eyes from 43 patients with acne vulgaris, including 33 females (76.7%), who had a mean age of 24.81 ± 6.60 years, completed the study. The mean CMT was 231.49 ± 19.52 at the baseline and significantly decreased to 229.0 ± 19.57 (p = 0.02) and 229.28 ± 18.83 after three and six months, respectively (p < 0.03). The change in the macular thicknesses measured at four quadrants and choroidal thicknesses were not statistically significant during the study (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The result of our study demonstrated choroidal thickness change is not significant in patients with acne vulgaris after systemic isotretinoin therapy during six months of follow-up. The decreased CMT amount was 2.2 microns; even if statistically significant, this amount is clinically insignificant.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare characteristics of unilateral vs. bilateral thyroid eye disease (TED). METHODS: This retrospective analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on patients with TED who were evaluated at an academic referral center over a 6-year period. We compared demographics, activity (clinical activity score) and severity (EUGOGO classification) of TED, thyroid disease duration, TED duration, the time interval between thyroid and eye involvement, thyroid function status, and clinical signs between bilateral and unilateral TED. RESULTS: Three hundred eighty-three patients including 213 females (55.6%), who had a mean age of 40.23 ± 13.72 years, were enrolled. Active TED was seen in 8.8% of bilateral and none of unilateral cases (P = 0.04). Bilateral TED patients had more severe disease (P = 0.001). The distribution of hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and euthyroidism was significantly different between unilateral and bilateral groups (P = 0.001). Abnormal ocular motility was present in 26.3% versus 2.3% of bilateral and unilateral ones, respectively (P = 0.001). Proptosis was more prevalent in bilateral than unilateral cases (P = 0.001). We did not observe any statistically significant difference between the two groups in others variables. CONCLUSION: Bilateral TED patients present with more severity, activity, movement abnormality, proptosis, and hyperthyroidism.

RESUMEN

Background: Different devices have diverse accuracy in diagnosing glaucoma, and therefore choosing the best device is challenging. Thereby, this study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of imaging devices in glaucoma and explore the need for an updated meta-analysis on this issue. Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles published between January 2004 and 2022. Cross-sectional or diagnostic studies were selected, and sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were measured. Results: A total of 28 cross-sectional studies were included for meta-analysis. Devices were divided into 2 groups, based on the optic nerve area and the macular area. For the nerve area, the pooled sensitivity was 77% (CI 95%, 70-83; I2, 90.01%) and the pooled specificity was 89% (CI 95%, 84-92, I2, 93.22%), and for the macular area, the pooled sensitivity was 87% (CI 95%, 80-92, I2, 91.79%), and the pooled specificity was 90% (CI 95%, 84-94; I2, 86.30%). We analyzed each device separately. For optical coherence tomography(OCT), the pooled sensitivity was 85% (CI 95%, 81-89; I2, 87.82%) and the pooled specificity was 89% (CI 95%, 85-92; I2, 84.39%); for Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT), the pooled sensitivity was 72% (CI 95%, 57-83; I2, 88.94%) and the pooled specificity was 79% (CI 95%, 62-90; I2, 98.61%), and for optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), the pooled sensitivity was 82% (CI 95%, 66-91; I2, 93.71%) and the pooled specificity was 93% (CI 95%, 87-96; I2, 64.72%). Conclusion: The macular area was more sensitive and specific than the optic nerve head. Furthermore, OCT had higher sensitivity, and OCTA had higher specificity when compared with other imaging devices.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patients with anti-aquaporin-4 antibody seropositive (AQP4-IgG+) neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs) frequently suffer from optic neuritis (ON) leading to severe retinal neuroaxonal damage. Further, the relationship of this retinal damage to a primary astrocytopathy in NMOSD is uncertain. Primary astrocytopathy has been suggested to cause ON-independent retinal damage and contribute to changes particularly in the outer plexiform layer (OPL) and outer nuclear layer (ONL), as reported in some earlier studies. However, these were limited in their sample size and contradictory as to the localisation. This study assesses outer retinal layer changes using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in a multicentre cross-sectional cohort. METHOD: 197 patients who were AQP4-IgG+ and 32 myelin-oligodendrocyte-glycoprotein antibody seropositive (MOG-IgG+) patients were enrolled in this study along with 75 healthy controls. Participants underwent neurological examination and OCT with central postprocessing conducted at a single site. RESULTS: No significant thinning of OPL (25.02±2.03 µm) or ONL (61.63±7.04 µm) were observed in patients who were AQP4-IgG+ compared with patients who were MOG-IgG+ with comparable neuroaxonal damage (OPL: 25.10±2.00 µm; ONL: 64.71±7.87 µm) or healthy controls (OPL: 24.58±1.64 µm; ONL: 63.59±5.78 µm). Eyes of patients who were AQP4-IgG+ (19.84±5.09 µm, p=0.027) and MOG-IgG+ (19.82±4.78 µm, p=0.004) with a history of ON showed parafoveal OPL thinning compared with healthy controls (20.99±5.14 µm); this was not observed elsewhere. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that outer retinal layer loss is not a consistent component of retinal astrocytic damage in AQP4-IgG+ NMOSD. Longitudinal studies are necessary to determine if OPL and ONL are damaged in late disease due to retrograde trans-synaptic axonal degeneration and whether outer retinal dysfunction occurs despite any measurable structural correlates.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in Bell's phenomenon after inferior and medial orbital wall decompression in patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). METHODS: This prospective interventional study included patients with moderate to severe non-active TAO, who underwent inferior and medial wall orbital decompression. Bell's phenomenon and adjusted Bell's phenomenon were evaluated at baseline and six months after surgery. Bell's phenomenon was assessed by holding the upper lid open during forced eyelid closure. Afterwards, the upward excursion, the distance between lower eyelid margin and lower corneal limbus, was measured. Adjusted Bell's phenomenon distance is defined as the difference between margin reflex distance two (MRD2) and Bell's phenomenon distance. RESULTS: Thirty TAO patients, including 15 males (50%), with a mean age of 43.6 ± 11.6 years, were enrolled. The distance of Bell's phenomenon significantly decreased after surgery by an average of 3.25 ± 1.57 mm (P < 0.001). In addition, the difference between pre- and post-operative distance of adjusted Bell's phenomenon was - 1.58 ± 2.13 (P < 0.001) corresponding to the worsening in the adjusted Bell's phenomenon. CONCLUSION: The result of our study demonstrated that Bell's phenomenon decreases significantly after inferior and medial wall decompression, which could be considered a complication of this form of orbital wall decompression in TAO.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To investigate the possible association of different pattern of diabetic retinopathy (DR) on corneal endothelium cells in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. METHODS: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, corneal endothelium parameters including endothelial cell density (ECD), average cell size (AVG), coefficient of variation in cell size (CV), and hexagonality (Hex) were evaluated by non-contact specular microscopy. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-four eyes of 134 diabetic patients including 77 females (57.5%) with a mean age of 61.03 ± 8.08 years were enrolled. The overall corneal parameters in diabetic patients with and without retinopathy were not significantly different (P > 0.05). There is a significant relationship between CV and the duration of the disease with age variable control (B = 0.369, p-value < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Corneal endothelial parameters were not associated with DM in patients without and with DR. There is a significant relationship between CV and the duration of the disease with age variable control.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To systematically review the published manuscripts on stereopsis after corneal refractive surgery. METHODS: The Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Clinical Key, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant articles published until August 2020. The fixed- or random-effects models were used to estimate the Weighted mean difference (WMD) or Relative risk (RR) and 95% Confidence interval (CI) for postoperative stereopsis changes and incidence when applicable. Meta-regression was conducted for adjusting the effects of potential confounders. RESULTS: Seven studies (1266 eyes) in adults and ten studies in pediatrics (259 eyes) were included. In adults, stereopsis improved significantly compared to the preoperative state (WMD = - 27.4, 95% CI = - 40.0, - 14.7; I2 = 97.8%; P < 0.001). In pediatrics, proportion of patients with stereoacuity postoperatively was 2.18 times compared to preoperative evaluation. (RR = 2.18, 95% CI = 1.2, 3.9; I2 = 68.6%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Stereopsis improves after corneal refractive surgery in adults and pediatrics.

RESUMEN

At a time when the COVID-19's second wave is still picking up in countries like India, a number of reports describe the potential association with a rise in the number of cases of mucormycosis, commonly known as the black fungus. This fungal infection has been around for centuries and affects those people whose immunity has been compromised due to severe health conditions. In this article, we provide a detailed overview of mucormycosis and discuss how COVID-19 could have caused a sudden spike in an otherwise rare disease in countries like India. The article discusses the various symptoms of the disease, class of people most vulnerable to this infection, preventive measures to avoid the disease, and various treatments that exist in clinical practice and research to manage the disease.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to compare the visual outcomes after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), with and without the iris registration (IR) technology. The retrospective cohort study was performed for wavefront-guided PRK using the Technolas 217z100 excimer laser system in patients with myopic astigmatism (cylinder error - 2 to - 4 diopter [D]). Eyes were divided into IR group (IRPRK) and non-IR group (non-IRPRK). Visual acuity (VA), cylindrical refraction, and the astigmatic vector components using the Alpins method were compared between the two groups preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Fifty IRPRK patients (66% female, mean age 30.56 ± 6.31 years) and 50 non-IRPRK (60% female, mean age 29.60 ± 5.63 years) were enrolled. The mean logMAR uncorrected VA improved from 0.89 ± 0.44 to 0.032 ± 0.05 in the IRPRK group (P < 0.001) and from 0.89 ± 0.46 to 0.042 ± 0.06 postoperatively while follow-up in the non-IRPRK group (P < 0.001). No statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups regarding mean uncorrected distance VA (P = 0.4), corrected distance VA (P = 0.5), spherical equivalent (P = 0.16), defocus equivalent (P = 0.18), and absolute cylinder (P = 0.94). More than 90% eyes were within ± 1.00 D of emmetropia in both groups. Moreover, Alpins vector analysis revealed that no significant differences were found in any astigmatic parameters between the two groups (P > 0.05). Wavefront-guided PRK independent of the IR status is effective, safe, and predictable in patients with myopic astigmatism. No statistical significance was observed supporting data for the better outcome of visual acuity and astigmatism correction using IR in comparison with a non-IR system.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: It is hypothesized that increased inflammatory markers in keratoconus (KC) may be one of the causes of corneal damage. The aim of our study was to the measurement of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL)-6 in tear of patients with KC and investigate their relationship with the severity of KC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study was performed on KC patients and healthy controls with a case-control setting. Tear levels of TNF-α and IL-6 were measured after collecting the tears from the tear lake using a filter paper via Schirmer I method without anesthesia. RESULTS: Eighty-one KC patients (mean age 29.45 ± 5.06 years) and 85 controls (mean age 28.01 ± 5.14 years) were enrolled. The mean levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were 26.77 ± 8.16, and 34.58 ± 9.82 pg/ml in the healthy group and 103.22 ± 51.94, and 183.76 ± 54.61 pg/ml in the KC group, respectively (P < 0.001). There was a significant relationship between the severity of the KC and the mean levels of IL-6 TNF-α in the case group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that the mean levels of IL-6 and TNF-α are significantly higher in KC than the healthy group, and the disease severity was significantly associated with TNF-α and IL-6.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Duane's retraction syndrome is a congenital eye movement anomaly with narrowing of the palpebral fissure and globe retraction on attempted adduction. There are several surgical approaches to treat the narrowing of the palpebral fissure. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of unilateral medial rectus recession (MRR) muscle combined lateral rectus (LR) muscle marginal myotomy (MM) with unilateral MRR alone in the management of narrowing of the palpebral fissure of patients with Type 1 Duane's retraction syndrome (DRS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with unilateral DRS Type 1 were randomly divided into two groups (14 eyes of 14 patients in each group). Age ≥5 years with DRS Type 1 with <20 prism diopters in primary position who were candidates for surgery were consecutively enrolled in this randomized controlled trial. Patients were divided into treatment groups to receive unilateral MR recession with simultaneous MM group or with unilateral MR recession alone. The amount of deviation in primary position, abnormal head position, palpebral fissure width (PFW), and up/down shoot was evaluated before and 3 months after the surgery. This study was registered at the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials under the registration code IRCT20131229015975N3. RESULTS: PFW increased within MRR/MM group at the end of the study (8.86 ± 1.51) compared with the baseline (7.79 ± 1.48) (P < 0.001). In contrast, in the MRR/MM group, PFW did not increase statistically significantly within the MRR group at the end of the study (8.14 ± 1.35) compared with the baseline (8.07 ± 1.38) (P = 0.67). Mean ± standard deviation of PFW (mm) in MRR/MM group after surgery (8.86 ± 1.51) was statistically significantly higher than that in the MRR group (8.14 ± 1.35), (P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The results of our study demonstrate PFW significantly increased after unilateral MRR muscle combined LR muscle MM.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between ocular biometric parameters and sulcus-to-sulcus (STS) diameter. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of preoperative ocular biometry data of patients who were candidates for phakic intraocular lens (IOL) surgery. Subjects underwent ocular biometry analysis, including refraction error evaluation using an autorefractor and Orbscan topography for white-to-white (WTW) corneal diameter and measurement. Pentacam was used to perform WTW corneal diameter and measurements of minimum and maximum keratometry (K). Measurements of STS and angle-to-angle (ATA) were obtained using a 50-MHz B-mode ultrasound device. Anterior optical coherence tomography was performed for anterior chamber depth measurement. Pearson's correlation test and stepwise linear regression analysis were used to find a model to predict STS. RESULTS: Fifty-eight eyes of 58 patients were enrolled. Mean age ± standard deviation of sample was 28.95 ± 6.04 years. The Pearson's correlation coefficient between STS with WTW, ATA, mean K was 0.383, 0.492, and - 0.353, respectively, which was statistically significant (all P < 0.001). Using stepwise linear regression analysis, there is a statistically significant association between STS with WTW (P = 0.011) and mean K (P = 0.025). The standardized coefficient was 0.323 and - 0.284 for WTW and mean K, respectively. The stepwise linear regression analysis equation was: (STS = 9.549 + 0.518 WTW - 0.083 mean K). CONCLUSION: Based on our result, given the correlation of STS with WTW and mean K and potential of direct and essay measurement of WTW and mean K, it seems that current IOL sizing protocols could be estimating with WTW and mean K.
