RESUMEN
Herbs have been used for centuries to treat various diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Herbs may be used by clients exclusively for disease management or in combination with conventional medications. This article increases provider awareness of certain herbs and their potential use by clients, as well as their impact on the cardiovascular system. It is important for the advanced practice nurse to collect information related to herb use during history retrieval. This information should prompt the nurse to discuss possible benefits and side effects that may occur taking herbs in isolation or in combination with cardiovascular prescription medications.

The abdomen is a big place even in a small person. Gastrointestinal trauma can result in injury to the stomach, small bowel, colon, or rectum. Traumatic causes include blunt or penetrating trauma, such as gunshot wounds, stabbings, motor vehicle collisions, and crush injuries. Nontraumatic causes include appendicitis, Crohn disease, cancer, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, blockage of the bowel, and chemotherapy. The mechanism of injury will affect both the nature and severity of any resulting injuries. Treatment must address the critical and emergent nature of these injuries as well as issues that affect all trauma situations, which include management of hemodynamic instability.

Health care is continuously undergoing evolutionary changes. These changes have been very dramatic for the end users. Instead of simple physician office visits and lengthy hospital stays, we are now faced with short hospital stays, office visits to different specialty providers, and an array of choices around them. With the present highway of choices between illness and wellness, it is important for transitions between these two to be affordable, advantageous to patients, and uncomplicated. This article discusses the choices patients and health care providers must make as the number of care options increase along with the risks and benefits.

Critical care patients present with or develop conditions that require imaging with a variety of radiographic methods. Technological advances such as the introduction of digital imaging instead of screen-film radiography have improved image resolution, readability, management, and portability of results while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. Radiographic imaging in the critical care unit is an integral part of patient management. It is imperative that the critical care nurse be cognizant of radiographic studies and thus be able to collaborate with all health care providers in the administration of quality patient care.
