RESUMEN

The proliferation and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria is an increasingly global challenge and is attributed mainly to the excessive or improper use of antibiotics. Currently, the gold-standard phenotypic methodology for detecting resistant strains is agar plating, which is a time-consuming process that involves multiple subculturing steps. Genotypic analysis techniques are fast, but they require pure starting samples and cannot differentiate between viable and non-viable organisms. Thus, there is a need to develop a better method to identify and prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistance. This work presents a novel method for detecting and identifying antibiotic-resistant strains by combining a cell sorter for bacterial detection and an elastic-light-scattering method for bacterial classification. The cell sorter was equipped with safety mechanisms for handling pathogenic organisms and enabled precise placement of individual bacteria onto an agar plate. The patterning was performed on an antibiotic-gradient plate, where the growth of colonies in sections with high antibiotic concentrations confirmed the presence of a resistant strain. The antibiotic-gradient plate was also tested with an elastic-light-scattering device where each colony's unique colony scatter pattern was recorded and classified using machine learning for rapid identification of bacteria. Sorting and patterning bacteria on an antibiotic-gradient plate using a cell sorter reduced the number of subculturing steps and allowed direct qualitative binary detection of resistant strains. Elastic-light-scattering technology is a rapid, label-free, and non-destructive method that permits instantaneous classification of pathogenic strains based on the unique bacterial colony scatter pattern. RESUMEN

We transplanted six solid organs from three hepatitis C virus (HCV) polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive donors during 2018-2023. Recipients were treated with glecaprevir/pibrentasvir or sofosbuvir/velpatasvir for 4-12 weeks, with all six achieving sustained virological response without significant adverse events. As occurs in other jurisdictions, solid organ transplants from HCR PCR-positive donors can be safely utilised in Australia.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157) is known for causing severe foodborne illnesses such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Although E. coli O157 is typically regarded as an extracellular pathogen and a weak biofilm producer, some E. coli O157 strains, including a clinical strain ATCC 43895, exhibit a notable ability to invade bovine crypt cells and other epithelial cells, as well as to form robust biofilm. This invasive strain persists in the bovine host significantly longer than non-invasive strains. Various surface-associated factors, including lipopolysaccharides (LPS), flagella, and other adhesins, likely contribute to this enhanced invasiveness and biofilm formation. In this study, we constructed a series of LPS-core deletion mutations (waaI, waaG, waaF, and waaC) in E. coli O157 ATCC 43895, resulting in stepwise truncations of the LPS. This approach enabled us to investigate the effects on the biosynthesis of key surface factors, such as flagella and curli, and the ability of this invasive strain to invade host cells. We confirmed the LPS structure and found that all LPS-core mutants failed to form biofilms, highlighting the crucial role of core oligosaccharides in biofilm formation. Additionally, the LPS inner-core mutants ΔwaaF and ΔwaaC lost the ability to produce flagella and curli. Furthermore, these inner-core mutants exhibited a dramatic reduction in adherence to and invasion of epithelial cells (MAC-T), showing an approximately 100-fold decrease in cell invasion compared with the outer-core mutants (waaI and waaG) and the wild type. These findings underscore the critical role of LPS-core truncation in impairing flagella and curli biosynthesis, thereby reducing the invasion capability of E. coli O157 ATCC 43895.

OBJECTIVE: Asthma occurs in ∼17% of Australian pregnancies and is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, which worsen with poor asthma control. Consequently, the South Australian 'Asthma in Pregnancy' perinatal guidelines were revised in 2012 to address management according to severity. This study investigated if these revised guidelines reduced the impact of maternal asthma on risks of adverse perinatal outcomes before (Epoch 1, 2006-2011) and after the revision (Epoch 2, 2013-2018). METHODS: Routinely collected perinatal and neonatal datasets from the Women's and Children's Hospital (Adelaide, Australia) were linked. Maternal asthma (prevalence:7.5%) was defined as asthma medication use or symptoms described to midwives. In imputation (n = 59131) and complete case datasets (n = 49594), analyses were conducted by inverse proportional weighting and multivariate logistic regression, accounting for confounders. RESULTS: Overall, maternal asthma was associated with increased risks of any antenatal corticosteroid treatment for threatened preterm birth (aOR 1.319, 95% CI 1.078-1.614), any Cesarean section (aOR 1.196, 95% CI 1.059-1.351), Cesarean section without labor (aOR 1.241, 95% CI 1.067-1.444), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR, aOR 1.285, 95% CI 1.026-1.61), and small for gestational age (aOR 1.324, 95% CI 1.136-1.542). After guideline revision, asthma-associated risks of any Cesarean section (p < 0.001), any antenatal corticosteroids (p = 0.041), and small for gestational age (p = 0.050), but not IUGR and Cesarean section without labor, were reduced. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical practice guidelines based on the latest evidence do not guarantee clinical efficacy. Since adverse perinatal outcomes did not all improve, this work highlights the need to evaluate the ongoing impact of guidelines on clinical outcomes.

The prefrontal cortex is a critical neuroanatomical hub for controlling motivated behaviours across mammalian species. In addition to intra-cortical connectivity, prefrontal projection neurons innervate subcortical structures that contribute to reward-seeking behaviours, such as the ventral striatum and midline thalamus. While connectivity among these structures contributes to appetitive behaviours, how projection-specific prefrontal neurons encode reward-relevant information to guide reward seeking is unknown. Here we use in vivo two-photon calcium imaging to monitor the activity of dorsomedial prefrontal neurons in mice during an appetitive Pavlovian conditioning task. At the population level, these neurons display diverse activity patterns during the presentation of reward-predictive cues. However, recordings from prefrontal neurons with resolved projection targets reveal that individual corticostriatal neurons show response tuning to reward-predictive cues, such that excitatory cue responses are amplified across learning. By contrast, corticothalamic neurons gradually develop new, primarily inhibitory responses to reward-predictive cues across learning. Furthermore, bidirectional optogenetic manipulation of these neurons reveals that stimulation of corticostriatal neurons promotes conditioned reward-seeking behaviour after learning, while activity in corticothalamic neurons suppresses both the acquisition and expression of conditioned reward seeking. These data show how prefrontal circuitry can dynamically control reward-seeking behaviour through the opposing activities of projection-specific cell populations.

Real-time detection and disinfection of foodborne pathogens are important for preventing foodborne outbreaks and for maintaining a safe environment for consumers. There are numerous methods for the disinfection of hazardous organisms, including heat treatment, chemical reaction, filtration, and irradiation. This report evaluated a portable instrument to validate its simultaneous detection and disinfection capability in typical laboratory situations. In this challenging study, three gram-negative and two gram-positive microorganisms were used. For the detection of contamination, inoculations of various concentrations were dispensed on three different surface types to estimate the performance for minimum-detectable cell concentration. Inoculations higher than 103~104 CFU/mm2 and 0.15 mm of detectable contaminant size were estimated to generate a sufficient level of fluorescence signal. The evaluation of disinfection efficacy was conducted on three distinct types of surfaces, with the energy density of UVC light (275-nm) ranging from 4.5 to 22.5 mJ/cm2 and the exposure time varying from 1 to 5 s. The study determined the optimal energy dose for each of the microorganisms species. In addition, surface characteristics may also be an important factor that results in different inactivation efficacy. These results demonstrate that the proposed portable device could serve as an in-field detection and disinfection unit in various environments, and provide a more efficient and user-friendly way of performing disinfection on large surface areas.

The elastic light-scatter (ELS) technique, which detects and discriminates microbial organisms based on the light-scatter pattern of their colonies, has demonstrated excellent classification accuracy in pathogen screening tasks. The implementation of the multispectral approach has brought further advantages and motivated the design and validation of a hyperspectral elastic light-scatter phenotyping instrument (HESPI). The newly developed instrument consists of a supercontinuum (SC) laser and an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). The use of these two components provided a broad spectrum of excitation light and a rapid selection of the wavelength of interest, which enables the collection of multiple spectral patterns for each colony instead of relying on single band analysis. The performance was validated by classifying microflora of green-leafed vegetables using the hyperspectral ELS patterns of the bacterial colonies. The accuracy ranged from 88.7% to 93.2% when the classification was performed with the scattering pattern created at a wavelength within the 473-709 nm region. When all of the hyperspectral ELS patterns were used, owing to the vastly increased size of the data, feature reduction and selection algorithms were utilized to enhance the robustness and ultimately lessen the complexity of the data collection. A new classification model with the feature reduction process improved the overall classification rate to 95.9%.

The issue of food fraud has become a significant global concern as it affects both the quality and safety of food products, ultimately resulting in the loss of customer trust and brand loyalty. To address this problem, we have developed an innovative approach that can tackle various types of food fraud, including adulteration, substitution, and dilution. Our methodology utilizes an integrated system that combines laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman spectroscopy. Although both techniques emerged as valuable tools for food analysis, they have until now been used separately, and their combined potential in food fraud has not been thoroughly tested. The aim of our study was to demonstrate the potential benefits of integrating Raman and LIBS modalities in a portable system for improved product classification and subsequent authentication. In pursuit of this objective, we designed and tested a compact, hybrid Raman/LIBS system, which exhibited distinct advantages over the individual modalities. Our findings illustrate that the combination of these two modalities can achieve higher accuracy in product classification, leading to more effective and reliable product authentication. Overall, our research highlights the potential of hybrid systems for practical applications in a variety of industries. The integration and design were mainly focused on the detection and characterization of both elemental and molecular elements in various food products. Two different sets of solid food samples (sixteen Alpine-style cheeses and seven brands of Arabica coffee beans) were chosen for the authentication analysis. Class detection and classification were accomplished through the use of multivariate feature selection and machine-learning procedures. The accuracy of classification was observed to improve by approximately 10% when utilizing the hybrid Raman/LIBS spectra, as opposed to the analysis of spectra from the individual methods. This clearly demonstrates that the hybrid system can significantly improve food authentication accuracy while maintaining the portability of the combined system. Thus, the successful implementation of a hybrid Raman-LIBS technique is expected to contribute to the development of novel portable devices for food authentication in food as well as other various industries.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of including the response option of 'Possibly' in the Distress question on the Matthey Generic Mood Questionnaire (MGMQ) during antenatal emotional health screening in English-speaking women. BACKGROUND: Some distress screening questions only allow respondents to choose between 'Yes' or 'No' to the presence of distress. The MGMQ, however, allows respondents to chose between 'Yes', 'Possibly', or 'No', which may be preferable if a participant is reluctant to state she definitely feels distressed. METHOD: In Study 1, women undergoing routine antenatal psychosocial screening were allocated to either completing the MGMQ Distress question with the usual three-option response format of 'Yes, Possibly, No' (N = 960), or just a 'Yes, No' response format (N = 771). The proportion of responses were compared in each group, as were the proportion then screening positive on the MGMQ's Bother question. In Study 2, women (N = 113) attending routine antenatal clinic appointments were asked about their preference between these response formats. RESULTS: Including 'Possibly' resulted in only a slight increase in the proportion giving a positive response to the Distress question, and then also screening positive on the Bother question. In Study 2, a substantial majority of women (80%) preferred having 'Possibly' in the response options. CONCLUSION: While the impact of including 'Possibly' is small, it allows for more women to communicate how they are feeling on the full MGMQ. Given the large majority of women preferring having 'Possibly' included, we believe that the Distress Question is enhanced by having this as a response option.

This study investigated equine nutrition knowledge and educational needs of licensed veterinarians in the United States who were exclusively or predominately equine practitioners. It found veterinarians regard their peers as an important resource of nutritional knowledge, ranking ahead of all other sources except a PhD equine nutritionist. Interestingly, only 21% of veterinarians felt good about their knowledge level in equine nutrition after graduating from veterinary school. Although veterinarians in this study reported equine nutrition to be an area of weakness, 75% had not pursued continuing education in the field of nutrition within the last year. Additionally, they devoted only 65 minutes per year on average to improving their knowledge of equine nutrition, yet the majority (82.2%) had been providing nutritional advice to clients. This study revealed that time spent practicing veterinary medicine increases (p < .001) a veterinarian's self-perceived knowledge level of equine nutrition, shifting from just below average after graduation from veterinary school to just above average at the time of this study. The majority (70%) of veterinarians in this study believe nutrition is very important in their practice philosophy, and 71% showed interest in taking online continuing education courses; thus, curriculum should be developed and offered in areas of need as identified by this study. These areas include insulin resistance, equine gastric ulcer syndrome, equine metabolic syndrome, performance horses, equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, equine polysaccharide storage myopathy, and arthritis/joint pain, along with how to assess nutritional status during general wellness examinations.

The ability to recognize motivationally salient events and adaptively respond to them is critical for survival. Here, we tested whether dopamine (DA) neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) contribute to this process in both male and female mice. Population recordings of DRNDA neurons during associative learning tasks showed that their activity dynamically tracks the motivational salience, developing excitation to both reward-paired and shock-paired cues. The DRNDA response to reward-predicting cues was diminished after satiety, suggesting modulation by internal states. DRNDA activity was also greater for unexpected outcomes than for expected outcomes. Two-photon imaging of DRNDA neurons demonstrated that the majority of individual neurons developed activation to reward-predicting cues and reward but not to shock-predicting cues, which was surprising and qualitatively distinct from the population results. Performing the same fear learning procedures in freely-moving and head-fixed groups revealed that head-fixation itself abolished the neural response to aversive cues, indicating its modulation by behavioral context. Overall, these results suggest that DRNDA neurons encode motivational salience, dependent on internal and external factors.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Dopamine (DA) contributes to motivational control, composed of at least two functional cell types, one signaling for motivational value and another for motivational salience. Here, we demonstrate that DA neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) encode the motivational salience in associative learning tasks. Neural responses were dynamic and modulated by the animal's internal state. The majority of single-cells developed responses to reward or paired cues, but not to shock-predicting cues. Additional experiments with freely-moving and head-fixed mice showed that head-fixation abolished the development of cue responses during fear learning. This work provides further characterization on the functional roles of overlooked DRNDA populations and an example that neural responses can be altered by head-fixation, which is commonly used in neuroscience.

Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream (SAB) infection is a common and severe infectious disease, with a 90-day mortality of 15%-30%. Despite this, <3000 people have been randomized into clinical trials of treatments for SAB infection. The limited evidence base partly results from clinical trials for SAB infections being difficult to complete at scale using traditional clinical trial methods. Here we provide the rationale and framework for an adaptive platform trial applied to SAB infections. We detail the design features of the Staphylococcus aureus Network Adaptive Platform (SNAP) trial that will enable multiple questions to be answered as efficiently as possible. The SNAP trial commenced enrolling patients across multiple countries in 2022 with an estimated target sample size of 7000 participants. This approach may serve as an exemplar to increase efficiency of clinical trials for other infectious disease syndromes.

We engineered light-gated channelrhodopsins (ChRs) whose current strength and light sensitivity enable minimally invasive neuronal circuit interrogation. Current ChR tools applied to the mammalian brain require intracranial surgery for transgene delivery and implantation of fiber-optic cables to produce light-dependent activation of a small volume of tissue. To facilitate expansive optogenetics without the need for invasive implants, our engineering approach leverages the substantial literature of ChR variants to train statistical models for the design of high-performance ChRs. With Gaussian process models trained on a limited experimental set of 102 functionally characterized ChRs, we designed high-photocurrent ChRs with high light sensitivity. Three of these, ChRger1-3, enable optogenetic activation of the nervous system via systemic transgene delivery. ChRger2 enables light-induced neuronal excitation without fiber-optic implantation; that is, this opsin enables transcranial optogenetics.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnostic tools to identify patients at risk of cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) are critical. For patients undergoing cardiotoxic cancer therapy, ejection fraction assessment using radionuclide ventriculography (RNVG) is commonly used for serial assessment of left ventricular (LV) function. METHODS: In this retrospective study, approximate entropy (ApEn), synchrony, entropy, and standard deviation from the phase histogram (phase SD) were investigated as potential early markers of LV dysfunction to predict CTRCD. These phase parameters were calculated from the baseline RNVG phase image for 177 breast cancer patients before commencing cardiotoxic therapy. RESULTS: Of the 177 patients, 11 had a decline in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of over 10% to an LVEF below 50% after treatment had commenced. This patient group had a significantly higher ApEn at baseline to those who maintained a normal LVEF throughout treatment. Of the parameters investigated, ApEn was superior for predicting the risk of CTRCD. Combining ApEn with the baseline LVEF further improved the discrimination between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that RNVG phase analysis using approximate entropy may aid in the detection of sub-clinical LV contraction abnormalities, not detectable by baseline LVEF measurement, predicting a subsequent decline in LVEF.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between county-level caesarean delivery (CD) rates among women at low risk and morbidity among term newborns. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Population-based study of US county-level birth data from 2015 to 2017. POPULATION: Nulliparous women with term, singleton, vertex-presenting infants (NTSV) at low risk for morbidity. METHODS: The primary exposure was county-level CD rates. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome was morbidity among the low-risk NTSV cohort, categorised as severe (5-minute Apgar score of ≤3, assisted ventilation for ≥6 hours, severe neurologic injury or seizure, transfer or death) or moderate (5-minute Apgar score of <7 but >3, administration of antibiotics or assisted ventilation at delivery). We used linear regression models to determine the association between county NTSV CD and neonatal morbidity rates with cluster robust standard errors. RESULTS: The analysis included data from 2 753 522 births in 952 counties from all 48 states. The mean NTSV CD rate was 23.6% (standard deviation 4.8%). The median severe and moderate neonatal morbidity rates were 15.2 (interquartile range, IQR 9.4-23.6) and 52.5 (IQR 33.4-75.7) per 1000 births, respectively. In the unadjusted analysis using the risk-adjusted exposure and outcome, every percentage point increase in the CD rate of a county was associated with 0.6 (95% CI -0.9, -0.3) and 2.3 fewer (95% CI -3.4, -1.1) cases of severe and moderate neonatal morbidity per 1000 live births. After adjustment for other county factors, the relationships remained significant. These findings were tested in multiple sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Lower county-level NTSV CD rates were associated with a small increase in morbidity among term newborns in the USA. PURPOSE: The primary objective was to determine the feasibility of implementing the TrueNTH SHAReClinic as a pan-Canadian sexual health and rehabilitation intervention for patients treated for localized prostate cancer. METHODS: The feasibility study was designed to evaluate the accessibility and acceptability of the intervention. Participants from five institutions across Canada were enrolled to attend one pre-treatment and five follow-up online clinic visits over 1 year following their prostate cancer (PC) treatment. RESULTS: Sixty-five patients were enrolled in the intervention. Website analytics revealed that 71% completed the intervention in its entirety, including the educational modules, with an additional 10% completing more than half of the intervention. Five thousand eighty-three views of the educational modules were made along with 654 views of the health library items. Over 1500 messages were exchanged between participants and their sexual health coaches. At 12 months, the intervention received an overall average participant rating of 4.1 out of 5 on a single item satisfaction measure. CONCLUSION: Results support the TrueNTH SHAReClinic as highly acceptable to participants as defined by intervention adherence and engagement. The TrueNTH SHAReClinic demonstrated promise for being a feasible and potentially resource-efficient approach to effectively improving the sexual well-being of patients after PC treatment.

We present a smartphone-based bacterial colony phenotyping instrument using a reflective elastic light scattering (ELS) pattern and the resolving power of the new instrument. The reflectance-type device can acquire ELS patterns of colonies on highly opaque media as well as optically dense colonies. The novel instrument was built using a smartphone interface and a 532 nm diode laser, and these essential optical components made it a cost-effective and portable device. When a coherent and collimated light source illuminated a bacterial colony, a reflective ELS pattern was created on the screen and captured by the smartphone camera. The collected patterns whose shapes were determined by the colony morphology were then processed and analyzed to extract distinctive features for bacterial identification. For validation purposes, the reflective ELS patterns of five bacteria grown on opaque growth media were measured with the proposed instrument and utilized for the classification. Cross-validation was performed to evaluate the classification, and the result showed an accuracy above 94% for differentiating colonies of E. coli, K. pneumoniae, L. innocua, S. enteritidis, and S. aureus.

Demonstration of the Salmonella Typhimurium detection system was shown utilizing a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) biosensor and signal enhancement by gold nanoparticles. In this study, a benchtop system of a QCM biosensor was utilized for the detection of Salmonella Typhimurium. It was designed with a peristaltic pump system to achieve immobilization of antibodies, detection of Salmonella, and the addition of gold nanoparticles to the sensor. As a series of biochemical solutions were introduced to the surface, the proposed system was able to track the changes in the resonant frequency which were proportional to the variations of mass on the sensor. For antibody immobilization, polyclonal antibodies were immobilized via self-assembled monolayers to detect Salmonella O-antigen. Subsequently, Salmonella Typhimurium was detected by antibodies and the average frequency before and after detecting Salmonella was compared. The highest frequency shifts were −26.91 Hz for 109 CFU/mL while the smallest frequency shift was −3.65 Hz corresponding to 103 CFU/mL. For the specificity tests, non-Salmonella samples such as E. coli, Listeria, and Staphylococcus resulted in low cross-reactivity. For signal amplification, biotinylated antibodies reacted to Salmonella followed by streptavidin­100 nm AuNPs through biotin-avidin interaction. The frequency shifts of 103 CFU/mL showed −28.04 Hz, and consequently improved the limit of detection.

We propose a novel integrated framework that jointly models complementary information from resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) connectivity and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography to extract biomarkers of brain connectivity predictive of behavior. Our framework couples a generative model of the connectomics data with a deep network that predicts behavioral scores. The generative component is a structurally-regularized Dynamic Dictionary Learning (sr-DDL) model that decomposes the dynamic rs-fMRI correlation matrices into a collection of shared basis networks and time varying subject-specific loadings. We use the DTI tractography to regularize this matrix factorization and learn anatomically informed functional connectivity profiles. The deep component of our framework is an LSTM-ANN block, which uses the temporal evolution of the subject-specific sr-DDL loadings to predict multidimensional clinical characterizations. Our joint optimization strategy collectively estimates the basis networks, the subject-specific time-varying loadings, and the neural network weights. We validate our framework on a dataset of neurotypical individuals from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) database to map to cognition and on a separate multi-score prediction task on individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a five-fold cross validation setting. Our hybrid model outperforms several state-of-the-art approaches at clinical outcome prediction and learns interpretable multimodal neural signatures of brain organization.

Well defined detection and analysis of nanoparticle-sized samples such as extracellular vesicles or viruses may be important for potential disease diagnostics. However, using conventional flow-cytometry optical methods to evaluate such small particles is quite challenging. The reason is that the particle is smaller than the diffraction limit, making detection difficult. An alternative approach is fluorescence detection via conjugated fluorochromes attached to the nanoparticles; the challenge in this case is the limitation imposed upon detection of a very small number of emitted photons buried in high background photon counts. Emitted fluorescence is described by the well-known equation kf = σa I Q, which describes the emitted fluorescence rate (kf) (photons/s) as the multiplication of molecular absorption cross section(σa), excitation intensity (I), and quantum yield (Q). In addition, the excitation rate is equal to 1/t, which is the inverse of the lifetime of several ns representing the most typical conjugated fluorescent molecules used in flow cytometry. We recently developed a sub-ns photon sensor that is faster than most fluorescence lifetimes, since sub-ns speed is a critically important parameter for the separation of individual emitted photons. Based on our observation of fluorescence and background levels on typical commercial flow cytometers it is evident that a significant component of the background is induced by water-molecular vibrations. Therefore, understanding what constitutes all the components that contribute to the signals we measure in flow cytometry would help in defining what we currently call "background signals." We attempted to define a theoretical model to try to unravel these issues. This model was based on use of a reflective dry surface in the absence of water molecules. Our objective was to determine if it is possible to minimize background and enhance signal, and to provide valuable information on the contributing components of the signals collected. In order to test this model, we tested a single dried particle 50 nm in diameter on a reflective surface with minimum background. While this is clearly not a standard biological system, our results suggest that this quantum approach closely follows established photon base theory. Our goal was to define the parameters for practical nanoparticle-fluorescence analysis while enhancing our knowledge of the contribution of background properties.
