BACKGROUND: Although previous studies described the production of IgG antibodies in a subgroup of patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) following messenger RNA vaccinations with BNT162b2 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (CVID responders), the functionality of these antibodies in terms of avidity as measured by the dissociation rate constant (kdis) and the antibody response to booster immunization has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze in CVID responders and healthy individuals, the avidity of anti-SARS-CoV-2 serum antibodies and their neutralization capacity as measured by surrogate virus-neutralizing antibodies in addition to IgG-, IgM-, and IgA-antibody levels and the response of circulating (peripheral blood) follicular T-helper cells after a third vaccination with BNT162b2 SARS-CoV-2 messenger RNA vaccine. METHODS: Binding IgG, IgA, and IgM serum levels were analyzed by ELISA in patients with CVID responding to the primary vaccination (CVID responders, n = 10) and healthy controls (n = 41). The binding avidity of anti-spike antibodies was investigated using biolayer interferometry in combination with biotin-labeled receptor-binding-domain of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and streptavidin-labeled sensors. Antigen-specific recall T-cell responses were assessed by measuring activation-induced markers by flow cytometry. RESULTS: After the third vaccination with BNT162b2, IgG-, IgM-, and IgA-antibody levels, surrogate virus-neutralizing antibody levels, and antibody avidity were lower in CVID responders than in healthy controls. In contrast, anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein avidity was comparable in CVID responders and healthy individuals following primary vaccination. Follicular T-helper cell response to booster vaccination in CVID responders was significantly reduced when compared with that in healthy individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Impaired affinity maturation during booster response provides new insight into CVID pathophysiology.

Eating disorders (ED) and affective disorders (AD) in adolescent population and several investigations have pointed out that specific family dynamics play a major role in the onset, course, and maintenance of both disorders. The aim of this study was to extend the literature of this topic by exploring differences between parents' personality traits, coping strategies, and expressed emotion comparing groups of adolescents with different mental conditions (anorexia nervosa vs. affective disorder vs. control group) with a case-control study design. A total of 50 mothers and 50 fathers of 50 girls with anorexia nervosa (AN), 40 mothers and 40 fathers of 40 girls with affective disorder (AD), and 50 mothers and 50 fathers of 50 girls with no pathology that conformed the control group (CG) were measured with the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), the COPE Inventory, the Family Questionnaire (FQ), and psychopathology variables, anxiety, and depression. Both parents of girls with AN showed a significant difference in personality, coping strategies, and expressed emotion compared to both parents in the CG, while they presented more similarities to parents of girls in the AD group. Identifying personality traits, expressed emotion, coping strategies, and psychopathology of parents and their daughters will allow improvements in the interventions with the adolescents, parents, and families.

BACKGROUND: Previous evidence supports that monoclonal antibodies that inhibit the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) by 50%-65%, regardless of baseline treatments. We tested possible sex differences in a multicentre registry of real-world patients treated with PCSK9 inhibitors. METHODS: This is a multicentre and retrospective study of 652 patients initiating treatment with any PCSK9 inhibitor in 18 different hospitals. Before-treatment and on-treatment LDLc and medical treatments, clinical indication, and clinical features were recorded. RESULTS: Women represented 24.69% of the cohort. The use of statins was similar in both sexes, but women were receiving most frequently ezetimibe. Before-treatment median LDLc was 135 (interquartile range 115-166) mg, and it was higher in women. The median on-treatment LDLc was 57 (interquartile range 38-84) mg/dL, which represented a mean 54.5% reduction. On-treatment LDLc was higher in women, and the mean LDLc reduction was lower in women (47.4% vs. 56.9%; P = 0.0002) receiving evolocumab or alirocumab. The percentage of patients who achieved ≥50% LDLc reduction was higher in men (71.36% vs. 57.62%; P = 0.002). According to LDLc before-treatment quartiles, LDLc reduction was statistically lower in women in the 2 highest and a significant interaction of women and baseline LDLc >135 mg/dL was observed. Women were negatively associated with lower rates of LDLc treatment target achievement (odds ratio: 0.31). Differences were also observed in women with body mas index >25 kg/m2. Only 14 patients (2.14%) presented side effects. CONCLUSIONS: This multicentre and retrospective registry of real-world patients treated with PCSK9 inhibitors highlights significant gender differences in LDLc reduction.

INTRODUCTION: Polyphenols have shown capacity to improve appetite sensation, leading to enhanced control of body weight. However, despite being related with hunger-related hormones, metabolic and mechanism are not well known. METHODS: The effectiveness of a nutraceutical composed of extract to Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdarrifa (Lc-Hs) for controlling satiety and hunger was analyzed in a cross-over, placebo-controlled (Pla) clinical intervention. The study was divided in two 60-day periods separated by 30-day length wash-out period. At the end of each period, overweight and obese subjects (n = 33; age = 33.76 ± 12.23; BMI = 28.20 kg/m2 ± 2.47; fat mass 30.65 ± 8.39%; both sexes were proposed to eat an ad-libitum meal. Meanwhile, appetite sensation was determined by visual analog scales at different times. Moreover, blood extraction was performed to determine biochemical parameters (lipid and glucidic profile and safety parameters) and to evaluate hunger-related hormones (insulin, leptin, ghrelin, adiponectin, GLP-1 and peptide YY). RESULTS: A decrease in appetite sensation was observed in Lc-Hs treatment, showing higher satiety quotient (Pla = 3.36 ± 2.33%mm/kcal; Lc-Hs = 5.53 ± 2.91%mm/kcal; p < 0.0001). Area under the curve was higher in Pla compared to Lc-Hs during the test, from baseline to minute 240 (240 (Pla 9136.65 ± 2261.46% x min-1; Lc-Hs 8279.73 ± 2745.71% x min-1; p < 0.014). Energy consumption was lower for subjects treated with Lc-Hs (774.44 ± 247.77 kcal) compared to those treated with Pla (849.52 ± 246.54 kcal) (p < 0.004). Leptin values varied from baseline (Pla 12.36 ± 1.98 ng/mL; Lc-Hs 13.13 ± 1.99 ng/mL) to the end of the study (Pla 12.60 ± 2.02 ng/mL; Lc-Hs 12.06 ± 2.05 ng/mL; p < 0.047). GLP-1 values varied (p < 0.001) in Lc-Hs treatment from baseline (4.34 ± 0.49 ng/mL) to the end of the study (3.23 ± 0.52 ng/mL). CONCLUSION: The supplementation with the Lc-Hs extract decreases appetite sensation in overweight and obese population, reducing calorie intake after an ad-libitum meal. Due to variation on hunger-related hormones and the relationship between satiety feeling, it would be interesting to develop future research focused on the variation of the hormones themselves.

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: A transfer of medical activities to nurses and thus the redistribution of tasks has been discussed for almost 15 years. A legal base for model projects has been enacted. However, clearly defined tasks for substitution are still lacking. The aim of this study was to solicit opinions of general practitioners, nurses, people with dementia (PwD) and their relatives about the possibility of a large number of specific General practitioner (GP) tasks being performed by nurses in outpatient dementia care. METHODS: A mixed-methods study with a sequential in-depth design was conducted. The analysis presented here refers to the quantitative survey of the four participant groups. 865 participants were asked about the acceptance of substitution of assessments, primary and follow-up prescriptions, health monitoring measures and other activities currently performed by physicians. RESULTS: Across all groups of subjects, the highest level of approval for substitution was achieved for the assessment of mobility restrictions, everyday competencies, nutritional abnormalities, prescription of transportation, nursing aids, home nursing services and drawing of blood samples. Among PwD and relatives, the level of acceptance for substitution was very high. 88% of the PwD and relatives indicated that many activities can be substituted while the general practitioner remained their first point of contact. More GPs (63.2%) than nurses (56.7%) would accept the substitution. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that a large number of GPs, nurses, patients and their relatives welcome substitution. However, PwD and relatives have a significantly more positive attitude towards substitution.

Task sharing in outpatient dementia care - Focus groups with GPs and nurses Abstract. Background: Caring for people with dementia (PWD) is challenging for the health system and family carers and can only be managed through interprofessional medical and nursing care. AIM: The AHeaD study investigated attitudes of general practitioners (GPs) and nurses towards the transfer of activities previously performed by GPs to advanced nurses in the outpatient care of PWDs. METHODS: In four focus group discussions with 10 GPs and 13 nurses, qualitative content analysis was used to investigate attitudes towards the transfer of certain tasks and to identify opportunities and barriers to their introduction. RESULTS: GPs primarily preferred the transfer of nursing activities such as blood sampling, assessments, their monitoring or follow-up prescriptions for nursing aids. "Classical" medical tasks (e. g. diagnosis of diseases, initial prescription of medication) are still seen in the hands of GPs. Nurses demanded more appreciation and recognition for the relationship between GPs and nurse and criticised the lack of trust and insufficient communication. Both sides pointed to tight time budgets that were hardly oriented towards the actual needs of the PWD. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of a redistribution of tasks requires the creation of legal and financial framework conditions, time resources, concrete task descriptions as well as a stronger cooperation between the professional groups involved. Innovative concepts could contribute to the sensible use of the resources GP and nurses and strengthen the care of PWDs.

Increased expression of developmentally silenced fetal globin (HBG) reduces the clinical severity of ß-hemoglobinopathies. Benserazide has a relatively benign safety profile having been approved for 50 years in Europe and Canada for Parkinson's disease treatment. Benserazide was shown to activate HBG gene transcription in a high throughput screen, and subsequent studies confirmed fetal hemoglobin (HbF) induction in erythroid progenitors from hemoglobinopathy patients, transgenic mice containing the entire human ß-globin gene (ß-YAC) and anemic baboons. The goal of this study is to evaluate efficacies and plasma exposure profiles of benserazide racemate and its enantiomers to select the chemical form for clinical development. Intermittent treatment with all forms of benserazide in ß-YAC mice significantly increased proportions of red blood cells expressing HbF and HbF protein per cell with similar pharmacokinetic profiles and with no cytopenia. These data contribute to the regulatory justification for development of the benserazide racemate. Additionally, dose ranges and frequencies required for HbF induction using racemic benserazide were explored. Orally administered escalating doses of benserazide in an anemic baboon induced γ-globin mRNA up to 13-fold and establish an intermittent dose regimen for clinical studies as a therapeutic candidate for potential treatment of ß-hemoglobinopathies.

AIMS: To demonstrate the attitudes of general practitioners (GPs), nurses, persons with dementia, and caregiver towards suitable tasks and qualification needs for and the acceptance and impact of advanced nursing roles in German dementia primary care. DESIGN: Observational study using a questionnaire survey with 225 GPs, 232 nurses, 211 persons with dementia, and 197 caregivers, conducted between December 2017-August 2018. METHODS: A questionnaire was generated that includes specific assessment, prescription, and monitoring tasks of advanced nursing roles in dementia primary care as well as qualification requirements for and the acceptance and the impact of advanced nursing roles. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Group differences were assessed using the Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: Advanced nursing roles were highly appreciated across all groups. Assessment and monitoring tasks were rated as highly suitable, and prescription authorities as moderately suitable. Nurses felt less confident in assessment and monitoring, but more confident in prescribing as practitioners expected. Patients and caregivers would appreciate a takeover of tasks by nurses; nurses and practitioners preferred a delegation. A dementia-specific qualification was rated as best suitable for advanced nursing roles, followed by 'no specific qualification' if medical tasks that only can be carried out by practitioners were delegated and an academic degree if tasks were substituted. Advanced nursing roles were rated as beneficial, strengthening the confidence in nursing care and improving the cooperation between professionals and the treatment. Practitioners assumed that advanced nursing roles would improve job satisfaction of nurses, which was not confirmed by nurses. CONCLUSION: There is an extended consensus towards the enlargement of advanced nursing roles, represented by high endorsement, acceptance, and willingness to reorganize tasks. IMPACT: Results debunk the common notion that German practitioners would be reluctant towards advanced nursing roles and a takeover of current practitioner tasks, supporting the implementation of advanced nursing roles in Germany.

PURPOSE: The aim of this article was to validate the Spanish version of the Home Environment Survey (HES-S) and was divided in two studies: (1) to assess the reliability, convergent validity of HES-S in a survey of 145 parents of children with overweight/obesity; (2) to study the magnitude of the association between children's BMI status with the latent scores theoretically defined by the HES model. METHODS: To test the scale and the model, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and a path analysis were carried out among a sample of 156 parents of preadolescents (106 overweight/obesity and 50 normal-weight children). No CFA or EFA were carried out in the validation of the original instrument. RESULTS: Study 1, both the Physical Activity and the Eating Habits components of the scale showed adequate levels of internal consistency for the majority of the scales, except for two. One of them, Healthy Eating Parental Policies (HEP) subscale was reduced after excluded two items, although it did not improve substantially. This model indicated that there was a significant association between the two Eating Habits scales and the child's weight status, but child's weight was not associated with the Physical Activity components. Convergent validity was confirmed by correlations with related variables: family eating habits (F-EAT), parent's physical activity (IPAQ), and children's physical activity (assessed via accelerometers during one week). Study 2, our results replicated the original four factor structure proposed for physical activity (CFI = 0.99; RMSEA = 0.03), but the original factor structure of the eating habits component was not supported. In addition, the relationship of the child's weight status, the Physical Activity components, and the two scales of Eating Habits (Parental Modeling and Policies) was explored with a path analysis showing good fit indices (CFI = 0.95; RMSEA = 0.06). Child's BMI was negatively associated with Healthy Eating Parental Role Modeling (r = - 0.21) and with Healthy Eating Parental Policies (r = - 0.19), but not with the factors of Child's Physical Activity model. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first instrument to assess obesogenic family environment in Spanish speaking countries, which is a relevant dimension within a health perspective so as to implement new policies and strategies in obesity tertiary prevention. Overall, the confirmatory factor analysis of the HES-S has only provided additional support for one part related to Physical Activity. In addition, Child's BMI was correlated with scales of Eating Habits but not with Child's Physical Activity factor. These results clearly suggest that further research is warranted. In this article, sources of information in electronic states are reexamined and a need for the resultant measures of the entropy/information content, combining contributions due to probability and phase/current densities, is emphasized. Probability distribution reflects the wavefunction modulus and generates classical contributions to Shannon's global entropy and Fisher's gradient information. The phase component of molecular states similarly determines their nonclassical supplements, due to probability "convection". The local-energy concept is used to examine the phase equalization in the equilibrium, phase-transformed states. Continuity relations for the wavefunction modulus and phase components are reexamined, the convectional character of the local source of the resultant gradient information is stressed, and latent probability currents in the equilibrium (stationary) quantum states are related to the horizontal ("thermodynamic") phase. The equivalence of the energy and resultant gradient information (kinetic energy) descriptors of chemical processes is stressed. In the grand-ensemble description, the reactivity criteria are defined by the populational derivatives of the system average electronic energy. Their entropic analogs, given by the associated derivatives of the overall gradient information, are shown to provide an equivalent set of reactivity indices for describing the charge transfer phenomena.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of childhood obesity continues to increase worldwide. The aims of this study were to (1) assess the psychological well-being and rates of teasing of Spanish children with obesity (OG) and compare them with their non-overweight peers (NG), and (2) analyze the mediating role of weight-related teasing on the relation between children's BMI z score and psychological well-being. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 50 preadolescents with obesity, matched with non-overweight children according to age, sex, and socioeconomic status, who were assessed via self-report instruments measuring anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and teasing. RESULTS: The OG reported higher anxiety, depression, and teasing, and lower self-esteem. SEM revealed that children who scored worse on instruments assessing psychological well-being had higher BMI z scores. Weight-related teasing predicted poor psychological well-being scores and weight-related teasing mediated the relation between BMI and psychological well-being. CONCLUSIONS: The high rates of anxiety, depression, and weight-related teasing, as well as the low self-esteem, which was observed amongst the children with obesity, raise concerns about the quality of life of this population. Furthermore, the finding that weight-related teasing mediated the relationship between BMI and psychological well-being adds to a growing body of research, highlighting the harmful effects of weight-related stigma. Overall, these results highlight the importance of early intervention to assess for, and address, the presence of weight-related teasing and psychological well-being difficulties in preadolescents with obesity. The classical (modulus/probability) and nonclassical (phase/current) components of molecular states are reexamined and their information contributions are summarized. The state and information continuity relations are discussed and a nonclassical character of the resultant gradient information source is emphasized. The states of noninteracting and interacting subsystems in the model donor-acceptor reactive system are compared and configurations of the mutually-closed and -open equidensity orbitals are tackled. The density matrices for subsystems in reactive complexes are used to describe the entangled molecular fragments and electron communications in donor-acceptor systems which determine the entropic multiplicity and composition of chemical bonds between reactants.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus with devastating outcomes seen recently in the Americas due to the association of maternal ZIKV infection with fetal microcephaly and other fetal malformations not previously associated with flavivirus infections. Here, we have developed the olive baboon (Papio anubis) as a nonhuman primate (NHP) translational model for the study of ZIKV pathogenesis and associated disease outcomes to contrast and compare with humans and other major NHPs, such as macaques. Following subcutaneous inoculation of adult male and nonpregnant female baboons, viremia was detected at 3 and 4 days postinfection (dpi) with the concordant presentation of a visible rash and conjunctivitis, similar to human ZIKV infection. Furthermore, virus was detected in the mucosa and cerebrospinal fluid. A robust ZIKV-specific IgM and IgG antibody response was also observed in all the animals. These data show striking similarity between humans and the olive baboon following infection with ZIKV, suggesting our model is a suitable translational NHP model to study ZIKV pathogenesis and potential therapeutics.IMPORTANCE ZIKV was first identified in 1947 in a sentinel rhesus monkey in Uganda and subsequently spread to Southeast Asia. Until 2007, only a small number of cases were reported, and ZIKV infection was relatively minor until the South Pacific and Brazilian outbreaks, where more severe outcomes were reported. Here, we present the baboon as a nonhuman primate model for contrast and comparison with other published animal models of ZIKV, such as the mouse and macaque species. Baboons breed year round and are not currently a primary nonhuman primate species used in biomedical research, making them more readily available for studies other than human immunodeficiency virus studies, which many macaque species are designated for. This, taken together with the similarities baboons have with humans, such as immunology, reproduction, genetics, and size, makes the baboon an attractive NHP model for ZIKV studies in comparison to other nonhuman primates.

General variations of electronic states are discussed, and the state "vertical" and "horizontal" displacements are explored. Quantum dynamics of the wave function modulus and phase components is examined, and the associated continuity relations are summarized. The probability and current contributions to overall information-theoretic (IT) descriptors of the state global and gradient entropy/information content are identified. These resultant measures are used to determine the phase equilibria in molecular systems. The currents corresponding to the entropy- and information-optimum phases are explored, the classical (probability) and nonclassical (current) flows in molecular information systems are identified, and probability interpretation of equidensity orbitals yielding the prescribed electron density is given. The physical equivalence of variational principles for the electronic energy and resultant gradient-information in open systems is stressed. It implies that their populational derivatives have the same capacity in describing charge transfer phenomena in molecules and their fragments. Illustrative application in determining thermodynamic equilibria and optimum charge transfer in molecular systems is discussed, and implications of the molecular virial theorem for bond-formation process and chemical reactions are investigated. The crucial role of the resultant gradient-information in chemical bonding is emphasized, and the Hammond postulate of reactivity theory is shown to be indexed by the reaction-coordinate derivative of electronic kinetic energy at the transition-state complex.

Background: Bordetella pertussis is a human pathogen responsible for serious respiratory illness. The disease is most severe in infants too young to be vaccinated with most hospitalizations and deaths occurring within this age group. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended immunization of pregnant women to protect infants from birth until their first vaccination at 6-8 weeks of age. We previously demonstrated that maternal vaccination with licensed acellular pertussis vaccines protected newborn baboons from disease. We hypothesized that protection was due to toxin-neutralizing, maternal anti-pertussis toxin antibodies and predicted that maternal vaccination with a pertussis toxoid (PTx)-only vaccine would protect newborns from disease. Methods: Infant baboons born to unvaccinated mothers or mothers vaccinated with a PTx-only vaccine were challenged with B. pertussis at 5 weeks of age and followed for infection and signs of disease. Results: Although all challenged infants were heavily colonized, the infant baboons born to mothers vaccinated with PTx-only vaccine were free from clinical disease following exposure to B. pertussis. In contrast, disease was observed in infants born to unvaccinated mothers. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that maternal vaccination with a PTx-only vaccine is sufficient to protect newborn baboons from disease following exposure to pertussis.

Pertussis is a severe respiratory disease caused by Bordetella pertussis The classic symptoms of pertussis include paroxysmal coughing with an inspiratory whoop, posttussive vomiting, cyanosis, and persistent coryzal symptoms. Infants under 2 months of age experience more severe disease, with most deaths occurring in this age group. Most of what is known about the pathology of pertussis in humans is from the evaluation of fatal human infant cases. The baboon model of pertussis provides the opportunity to evaluate the histopathology of severe but nonfatal pertussis. The baboon model recapitulates the characteristic clinical signs of pertussis observed in humans, including leukocytosis, paroxysmal coughing, mucus production, heavy colonization of the airway, and transmission of the bacteria between hosts. As in humans, baboons demonstrate age-related differences in clinical presentation, with younger animals experiencing more severe disease. We examined the histopathology of 5- to 6-week-old baboons, with the findings being similar to those reported for fatal human infant cases. In juvenile baboons, we found that the disease is highly inflammatory and concentrated to the lungs with signs of disease that would typically be diagnosed as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and bronchopneumonia. In contrast, no significant pathology was observed in the trachea. Histopathological changes in the trachea were limited to cellular infiltrates and mucus production. Immunohistostaining revealed that the bacteria were localized to the surface of the ciliated epithelium in the conducting airways. Our observations provide important insights into the pathology of pertussis in typical, severe but nonfatal pertussis cases in a very relevant animal model.

BACKGROUND: In various types of pulmonary research, pulmonary function testing (PFT) is performed to quantify the severity of lung disease. Induction of apnea and positive pressure ventilation are required for accurate PFT measurements in non-cooperative subjects. We compared two methods of apnea induction in infant olive baboons (Papio anubis). METHODS: Pulmonary function testing results were compared during apnea induced by hyperventilation (CO2 washout) vs. intravenous propofol (1 dose 10 mg/kg). PFT was evaluated using a hot-wire pneumotachometer incorporated within an Avea ventilator in nine 1-month-old baboons. RESULTS: Propofol induced apnea faster and more reliably. In both groups, PFT values passed the statistical equivalence test and were not significantly different (Student's t-test). There was a trend toward less data variability after propofol administration. CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous propofol was non-inferior to CO2 washout for apnea induction in infant olive baboons. Propofol induced apnea faster and more reliably and yielded less variable PFT results.

BACKGROUND: To ensure high quality patient care an effective interprofessional collaboration between healthcare professionals is required. Interprofessional education (IPE) has a positive impact on team work in daily health care practice. Nevertheless, there are various challenges for sustainable implementation of IPE. To identify enablers and barriers of IPE for medical and nursing students as well as to specify impacts of IPE for both professions, the 'Cooperative academical regional evidence-based Nursing Study in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania' (Care-N Study M-V) was conducted. The aim is to explore, how IPE has to be designed and implemented in medical and nursing training programs to optimize students' impact for IPC. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using the Delphi method and included 25 experts. Experts were selected by following inclusion criteria: (a) ability to answer every research question, one question particularly competent, (b) interdisciplinarity, (c) sustainability and (d) status. They were purposely sampled. Recruitment was based on existing collaborations and a web based search. RESULTS: The experts find more enablers than barriers for IPE between medical and nursing students. Four primary arguments for IPE were mentioned: (1) development and promotion of interprofessional thinking and acting, (2) acquirement of shared knowledge, (3) promotion of beneficial information and knowledge exchange, and (4) promotion of mutual understanding. Major barriers of IPE are the coordination and harmonization of the curricula of the two professions. With respect to the effects of IPE for IPC, experts mentioned possible improvements on (a) patient level and (b) professional level. Experts expect an improved patient-centered care based on better mutual understanding and coordinated cooperation in interprofessional health care teams. To sustainably implement IPE for medical and nursing students, IPE needs endorsement by both, medical and nursing faculties. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, IPE promotes interprofessional cooperation between the medical and the nursing profession. Skills in interprofessional communication and roles understanding will be primary preconditions to improve collaborative patient-centered care. The impact of IPE for patients and caregivers as well as for both professions now needs to be more specifically analysed in prospective intervention studies.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the temporal release (over three weeks) of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 4 (IL-4), IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), platelet-derived growth factor BB (PDGF-BB) and transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-ß1) from two platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) preparations from equine blood obtained at either 240g/8min or 416g/10min. METHODS: Whole blood from 10 horses was used to obtain PRF clots by two different centrifugation protocols. After 1h of rest, PRF clots were deposited in wells with culture medium, which was changed at 6h, 24h and then every 48h to 21days. Cytokines and GFs were measured by ELISA at 1h (serum supernatants from PRF clots) and all time points of culture medium change. A negative control (plasma) and a positive control (blood lysate) were also included. RESULTS: There were no relevant differences between the two protocols for the temporal release of proteins. However, a significant (p=0.01) effect of time was noted. All cytokines were detected after 6h of PRF clot culture until day 21. GF were detected at 1h until day 21. The concentrations for these proteins diminished gradually over time. A highly significant (p=0.01) correlation was noticed between all the proteins evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: Leukocytes enmeshed in PRF clots were able to produce cytokines, TGF-ß1 and PDGF-BB. These findings demonstrate a paramount role of leukocytes in wound healing induced or modified by PRF clots in mammals.
