RESUMEN

Controlling the intensity of emitted light and charge current is the basis of transferring and processing information1. By contrast, robust information storage and magnetic random-access memories are implemented using the spin of the carrier and the associated magnetization in ferromagnets2. The missing link between the respective disciplines of photonics, electronics and spintronics is to modulate the circular polarization of the emitted light, rather than its intensity, by electrically controlled magnetization. Here we demonstrate that this missing link is established at room temperature and zero applied magnetic field in light-emitting diodes2-7, through the transfer of angular momentum between photons, electrons and ferromagnets. With spin-orbit torque8-11, a charge current generates also a spin current to electrically switch the magnetization. This switching determines the spin orientation of injected carriers into semiconductors, in which the transfer of angular momentum from the electron spin to photon controls the circular polarization of the emitted light2. The spin-photon conversion with the nonvolatile control of magnetization opens paths to seamlessly integrate information transfer, processing and storage. Our results provide substantial advances towards electrically controlled ultrafast modulation of circular polarization and spin injection with magnetization dynamics for the next-generation information and communication technology12, including space-light data transfer. The same operating principle in scaled-down structures or using two-dimensional materials will enable transformative opportunities for quantum information processing with spin-controlled single-photon sources, as well as for implementing spin-dependent time-resolved spectroscopies.

Protein-protein interaction experiments still yield many false positive interactions. The socioaffinity metric can distinguish true protein-protein interactions from noise based on available data. Here, we present WeSA (Weighted SocioAffinity), which considers large datasets of interaction proteomics data (IntAct, BioGRID, the BioPlex) to score human protein interactions and, in a statistically robust way, flag those (even from a single experiment) that are likely to be false positives. ROC analysis (using CORUM-PDB positives and Negatome negatives) shows that WeSA improves over other measures of interaction confidence. WeSA shows consistently good results over all datasets (up to: AUC = 0.93 and at best threshold: TPR = 0.84, FPR = 0.11, Precision = 0.98). WeSA is freely available without login (wesa.russelllab.org). Users can submit their own data or look for organized information on human protein interactions using the web server. Users can either retrieve available information for a list of proteins of interest or calculate scores for new experiments. The server outputs either pre-computed or updated WeSA scores for the input enriched with information from databases. The summary is presented as a table and a network-based visualization allowing the user to remove those nodes/edges that the method considers spurious.

Type IV pili (T4P) are ubiquitous in both bacteria and archaea. They are polymers of the major pilin protein, which has an extended and protruding N-terminal helix, α1, and a globular C-terminal domain. Cryo-EM structures have revealed key differences between the bacterial and archaeal T4P in their C-terminal domain structure and in the packing and continuity of α1. This segment forms a continuous α-helix in archaeal T4P but is partially melted in all published bacterial T4P structures due to a conserved helix breaking proline at position 22. The tad (tight adhesion) T4P are found in both bacteria and archaea and are thought to have been acquired by bacteria through horizontal transfer from archaea. Tad pilins are unique among the T4 pilins, being only 40 to 60 residues in length and entirely lacking a C-terminal domain. They also lack the Pro22 found in all high-resolution bacterial T4P structures. We show using cryo-EM that the bacterial tad pilus from Caulobacter crescentus is composed of continuous helical subunits that, like the archaeal pilins, lack the melted portion seen in other bacterial T4P and share the packing arrangement of the archaeal T4P. We further show that a bacterial T4P, the Vibrio cholerae toxin coregulated pilus, which lacks Pro22 but is not in the tad family, has a continuous N-terminal α-helix, yet its α1 s are arranged similar to those in other bacterial T4P. Our results highlight the role of Pro22 in helix melting and support an evolutionary relationship between tad and archaeal T4P.

The combination of the ferrocene moiety with gold(I) catalysis remains a relatively unexplored field. In this article, we delve into the synthesis, characterization, and potential catalytic activity of four complexes utilizing both monodentate and bidentate ferrocenyl diphenylphosphane ligands (ppf and dppf), coordinated with two gold(I) metal centers, linked by either chloride or pentafluorophenylthiolate bridging ligands. This leads to the formation of cationic "self-activated" precatalysts capable of initiating the catalytic cycle without the need for external additives. The catalytic activity of these complexes was assessed through a model reaction in gold(I) catalysis, specifically the cyclization of a N-propargylbenzamide to produce an oxazole. In addition, we studied and compared the influence exerted by both the phosphane and the bridging ligand on the performance of these catalysts.

Gold catalysis has emerged as a groundbreaking field in synthetic chemistry, revolutionizing numerous organic transformations. Despite the significant achieved advancements, the mechanistic understanding behind many gold-catalyzed reactions remains elusive. This Concept article covers the so-called "self-activating" Au(I) complexes, sorting out their pivotal role in gold catalysis. We comment on how Au(I) complexes can undergo self-activation, triggering diverse catalytic transformations without the need for external additives. The most important examples reported so far that underlie the catalytic activity of these species are discussed. This intrinsic reactivity represents a paradigm shift in gold catalysis, offering new avenues for the design of efficient and sustainable catalytic systems. Furthermore, we explore the factors influencing the stability, reactivity, and selectivity of these Au(I) complexes, providing insights into their synthetic utility and potential applications. This area of research not only advances our fundamental understanding of gold catalysis but also paves the way for the development of novel catalytic strategies with broad implications in organic synthesis and the chemical industry.

Guidelines for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) recommend fasting before measurements, but how it affects the outcomes is unclear. This descriptive, before-and-after study examines the effect of fasting on BIA results and its impact on the diagnosis of malnutrition in hospitalized cancer patients. Fifty-three oncology patients (admitted in January-March 2020) were consecutively enrolled regardless of their nutritional status. Patients were assessed by the same dietician 24-48 h after admission, following the usual clinical practice. The measurements were taken after 12-h fasting (fasting state) and 60-90 min after breakfast (non-fasting state). Bioimpedance parameters (resistance [R], reactance [Xc], phase angle [PA]) and body composition indices (free-fat mass index [FFMI] and appendicular skeletal muscle index [ASMI]) were calculated. On average, R values did not significantly differ between fasting and non-fasting states (mean difference: +1.82 Ω; p = 0.64). The non-fasting Xc and PA were reduced (mean differences: -1.55 Ω, p = 0.93 and 0.09°, p = 0.82, respectively). Fasting and non-fasting FFMI and ASMI were similar (mean differences: -0.13 kg/m2 (p = 0.5) and -0.10 kg/m2 (p not calculated)). These results suggest that BIA does not require fasting, facilitating its routine use in hospitalized cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases are associated with a range of functional and psychosocial consequences that can adversely affect patients' quality of life (QoL). Haemochromatosis (HC) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder characterized by chronic iron overload that can ultimately lead to multiple organ dysfunction. Clinical diagnosis remains challenging due to the nonspecificity of symptoms and a lack of confirmatory genotyping in a substantial proportion of patients. Illness perception among HC patients has not been extensively investigated, lacking relevant information on how to improve their QoL. METHODS: We present the results of the first worldwide survey conducted in nearly 1500 HC respondents, in which we collected essential demographic information and identified the aspects that concern HC patients the most. RESULTS: Out of all the participants, 45.3% (n = 676) voiced their concern about physical and psychological consequences such as HC-related arthropathies, which can ultimately affect their social functioning. A similar proportion of patients (n = 635, 42.5%) also consider that better-informed doctors are key for improved HC disease management. Taking a patient-centred approach, we expose differences in patients' disease perspective by social and economic influences. CONCLUSIONS: We identify potential targets to improve patients' health-related QoL and reflect on strategic measures to foster gender equity in access to health resources. Finally, we make a call for a highly coordinated effort across a range of public policy areas to empower participants in the HC research process and design. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Nearly 1500 patients with hereditary HC responded to an anonymized online survey in which research and clinical priorities were addressed regarding this chronic and rare disease.

Advances in DNA sequencing and proteomics mean that researchers must now regularly interrogate thousands of positional gene/protein changes in order to find those relevant for potential clinical application or biological insights. The abundance of already known information on protein interactions, mechanism, and tertiary structure provides the possible means to understand these changes rapidly, though a careful and systematic integration of these diverse datasets is first needed. For this purpose, we developed Mechnetor, a tool that allows users to quickly explore and visualize integrated mechanistic data for proteins or interactions of interest. Central to the system is a careful cataloguing of diverse sources of protein interaction mechanism, and an efficient means to visualize interactions between relevant and/or known protein regions. The result is a finer resolution interaction network that provides more immediate clues as to points of intervention or mechanistic understanding. Users can import protein, interactions, genetic variants or post-translational modifications and see these data in the best known mechanistic context. We demonstrate the tool with topical examples in human genetic diseases and cancer genomics. The tool is freely available at: mechnetor.russelllab.org.

Climate change, resource scarcity, and a growing world population are some of the problems facing traditional agriculture. For this reason, new cultivation systems are emerging, such as vertical farming. This is based on indoor cultivation, which is not affected by climatic conditions. However, vertical farming requires higher consumption of water and light, since in traditional agriculture those resources are free. Vertical cultivation requires the use of new technologies and sensors to reduce water and energy consumption and increase its efficiency. The sensorization of these systems makes it possible to monitor and evaluate their performance in real time. In addition, vertical farming faces economic uncertainty since its profitability has not been studied in depth. This article studies the most important variables when monitoring a vertical farming system and proposes the sensors to be used in the data acquisition system. In addition, this study presents a cost model for the installation of this type of system. This cost model is applied to a case study to evaluate the profitability of installing this type of infrastructure. The results obtained suggest that the investment made in VF installations could be profitable in a period of three to five years.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relation between leisure screen time and emotional and behavioral problems in Spanish children aged 4-14 years. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study used a representative sample of children aged 4-14 years included in the 2017 Spanish National Health Survey (n = 4073). Emotional and behavioral problems of children were assessed through the parent-report Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Daily leisure screen time in minutes was categorized as 0-59, 60-119, 120-179, and ≥180. We calculated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) and their 95% CIs of being at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems. Associations were adjusted for potential confounding variables. RESULTS: Children spending 180 minutes or more of daily leisure screen time compared with children spending less than 1 hour were more likely to be at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems: aPR≥180: 2.19 (95% CI 1.53-3.14), emotional symptomology: aPR≥180: 2.09 (95% CI 1.37-3.18), conduct problems aPR≥180: 1.85 (95% CI 1.34-2.54), peer problems aPR≥180: 1.78 (95% CI 1.15-2.75), and to behave less prosocially: aPR≥180: 2.20 (95% CI 1.43-3.37). CONCLUSIONS: We have found significant associations between daily leisure screen time and emotional and behavioral problems in Spanish children between 6 and 14 years of age. However, these findings should be confirmed in cohort studies, so institutions might consider including screen time as a new risk factor for children.

Using a combination of experimental techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the influence of lithium insertion on the electronic and electrochemical properties of fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO) is assessed. For this purpose, we investigate the electrochromic behavior of a commercial FTO electrode embedded in a solution of lithium perclorate (LiClO4). The electrochromic properties are evaluated by UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. These tests show that FTO exhibits electrochromism with a respectable coloration efficiency (η = 47.9 cm2/C at 637 nm). DFT study indicates that lithium remains ionized in the lattice, raising the Fermi level about 0.7 eV deep into the conduction band. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to study chemical bonding and oxidation states. XPS analysis of the Sn 3d core levels reveals that lithium insertion in FTO induces a shift of 350 meV in the Sn 3d states, suggesting that lithium is incorporated into the SnO2 lattice.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response triggered by an infectious agent and is recognized by the World Health Organization as a global concern, since it is one of the major causes of severe illness in humans and animals. The study of the changes that can occur in saliva and serum in sepsis can contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the process and also to discover potential biomarkers that can help in its diagnosis and monitoring. The objective of this study was to characterize the changes that occur in the salivary and serum proteome of pigs with experimentally-induced sepsis. The study included five pigs with sepsis induced by LPS administration and five pigs with non-septic inflammation induced by turpentine for comparative purposes. In saliva, there were eighteen salivary proteins differentially expressed in the sepsis condition and nine in non-septic inflammation. Among these, significant increments in aldolase A and serpin B12 only occurred in the sepsis model. Changes in aldolase A were validated in a larger population of pigs with sepsis due to Streptococcus suis infection. In serum, there were 30 proteins differentially expressed in sepsis group and 26 proteins in the non-septic group, and most of the proteins that changed in both groups were related to non-specific inflammation. In the saliva of the septic animals there were some specific pathways activated, such as the organonitrogen compound metabolic process and lipid transport, whereas, in the serum, one of the main activated pathways was the regulation of protein secretion. Overall, saliva and serum showed different proteome variations in response to septic inflammation and could provide complementary information about the pathophysiological mechanisms occurring in this condition. Additionally, salivary aldolase A could be a potential biomarker of sepsis in pigs that should be confirmed in a larger population.

INTRODUCTION: Training in ethical competencies is perceived with special interest among the objectives of health education. The dimensions of the person such as integrity, autonomy and dignity influence the choice of interventions, but the different specialties of the health sciences conceive these dimensions with different perspectives depending on the clinical setting. These divergences can be detected during the first years of undergraduate studies, and it is important to know the professional bias and its possible causes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A procedure was developed through case-based learning (CBL) to assess various characteristics of decision-making during the early stages of student training. A semi-quantitative method was designed based on the narrative responses of a case with ethical implications in the field of gender violence. The method was applied to 294 undergraduate students in nursing (95), physiotherapy (109) and dentistry (90) from the Faculty of Health Sciences of a Spanish university. A frequency analysis of the narrative responses of the students to the proposed case was carried out, using the chi-square test to determine any association between the variables studied: gender, specialty and ethical knowledge. RESULTS: Four types of response categories were detected, as a result of combining the personal conversation, report to legal authority or require assistance of other teams. The most common option in dentists is conversation only, while physical therapists include the assistance of other teams. In nursing, a balance is observed between both possibilities. The results show that student responses differ significantly among specialties and also differ significantly according to test scores on ethical knowledge. However, no significant differences were found between the responses provided by men and women. CONCLUSION: Most of the health sciences students highly valued their own capacity for dialogue and reflection to approach situations with complex ethical dimensions. We consider that case-based learning (CBL), in combination with narrative analysis is a valid means of evaluating the professional ethical competencies of students in health sciences careers applied to a common goal.

BACKGROUND: Due to the change in screen time usage in the last decade, there is needed to add more evidence about the relationship of screen time and sleep duration. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between screen time and sleep duration among Spanish children between 1 and 14 years old. METHODS: We used data from the 2017 Spanish National Health survey, conducted on a representative sample of the Spanish population. We categorised daily leisure screen time as 0-59, 60-119, 120-179, and ≥180 minutes. We classified sleep duration, depending on the age, as proper sleep duration and short sleep duration. We calculated unadjusted, and adjusted prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of short sleep duration according to daily leisure screen time after adjusting for potential confounders. PR's were derived from fitting generalised linear models with Poisson distribution and robust variance. RESULTS: Of the 5517 Spanish children aged 1-14 years, 44.3% spent 120 minutes or more of daily leisure screen time and 23.6% had short sleep duration. 24.5% and 28.2% of children spending between 120 and 179 minutes and exceeding 180 minutes of daily leisure screen time suffered short sleep duration, respectively. In the adjusted model, higher patterns of daily leisure screen time were associated with short sleep duration: adjusted PR120-179  = 1.34 (95% CI 1.18, 1.54) and adjusted PR≥180  = 1.48 (95% CI 1.27, 1.73). CONCLUSIONS: Around one out of four Spanish children between 1 and 14 years old, exceeding 120 minutes of daily leisure screen time, had short sleep duration. More scientific research is needed for institutions to work on providing novel healthcare programmes that consider these new determinants of child health.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: While exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is a well-established problem, exposure to third-hand smoke (THS) is scanty known and needs to be studied. The objective of this work is to characterize salivary cotinine concentrations among people who self-reported exposure to SHS and THS at home. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of a representative sample (n = 736) of the adult population (≥16 years) from the city of Barcelona carried out in 2013-2014. A questionnaire on tobacco use and passive exposure was administered, and a saliva sample was collected for cotinine determination. For this study, the information of the non-smoker participants who provided saliva sample (n = 519) was used. The geometric means (GM) and geometric standard deviations (GSD) of the cotinine concentration were compared according to the type of self-reported exposure at home: (1) Not exposed to SHS or THS; (2) Exposed to SHS and THS; and (3) Only exposed to THS. We used log-linear models to compare the cotinine concentration of each exposed group with respect to the unexposed group, adjusting for sex, age, educational level, and tobacco exposure in other settings. RESULTS: The GM of the salivary cotinine concentration was 0.34 ng/ml (GSD = 0.16) among individuals reporting SHS and THS exposure, 0.22 ng/ml (GSD = 0.15) among those reporting only THS exposure and 0.11 ng/ml (GSD = 0.04) among those who declared not to be exposed to SHS nor THS (p-value for trend <0.001). The regression model showed a statistically significant increase in cotinine concentration among those exposed to SHS and THS (188% higher, 95% CI: 153%; 223%), and only exposed to THS (106% higher, IC95. %: 74.5%; 137.0%) when comparing with the unexposed group. No statistically significant differences in cotinine concentration were observed between those exposed to SHS and THS compared to the THS group (-25.8%, 95% CI: -69.5%; 17.9%). CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS: People exposed to third-hand smoke at home had quantifiable cotinine levels in saliva. No differences in cotinine levels were found between those exposed to second-hand and third-hand smoke at home. The reduction of exposure to third-hand smoke at home should be put into the agenda of tobacco control.

OBJECTIVE: To develop recommendations for the management of patients with primary or secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) based on best evidence and experience. METHODS: The Delphi methodology was followed. A multidisciplinary panel of 10 experts was established, who defined the scope, users and preliminary recommendations. Systematic and narrative reviews of the current literature were performed to assess data on the risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy and the efficacy and safety of add-on therapy in patients with GTCS. Twenty-five definitive recommendations were generated which were then graded on a scale of 1 (totally disagree) to 10 (totally agree) by the experts and 45 neurologists. Consensus was reached if at least 70% of the participants applied a score of ≥7. Each recommendation was then assigned a level of evidence, a grade of agreement and a grade of recommendation. The entire process was supervised by an expert methodologist. RESULTS: Overall, 24 out of 25 recommendations achieved consensus. These included specific recommendations on diagnosis, evaluation and treatment. The recommendations also emphasized the importance of proper psychological evaluation and effective communication between patients and health professionals, and the importance of patient and family education and support. SIGNIFICANCE: The recommendations generated by this consensus can be used as a guide for the diagnosis and management of patients with GTCS.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of Spanish workers with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and those at risk of developing MetS in 2015. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of workers (n = 15 614). We used a modified definition of the NCEP:ATPIII criteria for MetS (we used body mass index (BMI) above 28.8 kg/m2 instead of the waist circumference criterion). We calculated the prevalence of MetS (having at least three components) and of being at risk of MetS (having one or two components). We calculated adjusted odds ratios (aOR) of MetS according to socio-economic and workplace characteristics. RESULTS: The proportions of workers with and at risk of MetS were 7.1 and 31.9%, respectively. The most prevalent criterion was having a BMI > 28.8 kg/m2 (24.1%) in men and cHDL < 40 mg/dl in women (12.9%). There were significant associations between MetS and men (aOR compared to women = 3.73, CI 95%: 3.19; 4.36); age (higher among oldest, aOR = 5.75, CI 95%: 4.37;7.56); and social class (higher among lower social class, aOR = 2.03, CI 95%: 1.65;2.48). CONCLUSION: Reducing any of the five MetS components, while taking into account the differences found by socio-economic and workplace characteristics, should be one priority for reducing MetS prevalence.

RESUMEN

Objetivo. Establecer criterios médicos de retorno al trabajo en personal con riesgo de complicaciones por Covid-19. Material y métodos. Se realizó una revisión sistemática para identificar las condiciones y las características clínicas que influyen en el riesgo de desarrollar Covid-19 grave. Resultados. Se ha demostrado incremento del riesgo en obesidad, edad >60 años, diabetes mellitus, hipertensión arterial, enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica, enfermedad cardiovascular, enfermedad renal crónica y cáncer. Solamente en diabetes se ha estudiado si el control previo influye. Se proponen condiciones específicas y el nivel de riesgo epidemiológico para el retorno al trabajo. Conclusiones. El retorno laboral de estos grupos debe priorizarse buscando favorecer el control de la enfermedad, identificando el estado de salud que incrementa el riesgo y protegiendo el derecho al trabajo. Se presentan recomendaciones para guiar la reincorporación al trabajo.
