RESUMEN

The subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) beneath Phanerozoic regions is mostly constituted by fertile lherzolites, which sharply contrast with cratonic mantle made of highly-depleted peridotites. The question of whether this chemical difference results from lower degrees of melting associated with the formation of Phanerozoic SCLM or from the refertilization of ancient depleted SCLM remains a subject of debate. Additionally, the timing and geodynamic environment of accretion of the fertile SCLM in many Phanerozoic regions are poorly constrained. We here document new geochemical and Nd-Hf isotopic data for orogenic lherzolite massifs from the Ivrea-Verbano Zone (IVZ), Southern Alps. Even though a few Proterozoic Re depletion ages are locally preserved in these mantle bodies, our data reveal that the IVZ lherzolitic massifs were "recently" accreted to the SCLM in the Upper Devonian (ca. 370 Ma) during Pangea amalgamation, with a petrochemical evolution characterized by low-degree (~ 5-12%) depletion and nearly contemporaneous pervasive to focused melt migration. The lithospheric accretion putatively took place through asthenospheric upwelling triggered by Variscan intra-continental extension in a back-arc setting related to the subduction of the Rheic Ocean. We thus conclude that the fertile sections of Phanerozoic SCLM can be accreted during "recent" events of back-arc continental extension, even where Os isotopes preserve memories of melting events in much older times.

OBJECTIVES: Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) is a major public health issue with dramatic consequences on outcomes. However, in Italy a comprehensive and updated overview on national prevalence, in both the adult and pediatric populations, and its burden on the health care environment, is missing. The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis was to identify and summarize the available evidence regarding the prevalence of DRM in Italy from pediatric to adult and older ages, and to project its global costs on the health care system. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search for articles on epidemiology of DRM in Italy published up to June 2021. Studies reporting data on the prevalence of DRM in community-dwelling individuals with chronic diseases, nursing home patients, and hospitalized patients (medical, surgery, and oncology patients), were selected for inclusion. Methodological quality of the studies was assessed by two independent reviewers using published criteria. An epidemiologic meta-analysis to obtain an aggregate estimate of prevalence of DRM was performed and a model for estimating the cost of illness, based on the application of epidemiologic results to official national hospitalization data, and attribution of relevant unit costs in the national context was constructed. RESULTS: Sixty-seven studies reporting on the prevalence of DRM in Italian populations were included in the final selection; meta-analytical pooling yields mean prevalence estimates of about 50% and 30% in adult and pediatric hospitalized populations, respectively, with even higher findings for residents of long-term care facilities. Modeled projections of DRM-attributable yearly economic effects on the Italian health care system exceed 10 billion € in base case analysis, with the most optimistic estimate still exceeding 2.5 billion €. CONCLUSION: Although comparable in magnitude to data from previous studies in analogous international settings, the diffusion and effects of DRM in the Italian setting is impressive. Increased awareness of these data and proactive fostering of clinical nutrition services are warranted, as prompt identification and treatment of malnutrition have been shown to effectively improve clinical and economic results.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of Aspergillus tubingensis in extracting metals from rocks simulating Martian regolith through biomining. The results indicated that the fungal strain produced organic acids, particularly oxalic acid, in the first five days, leading to a rapid reduction in the pH of the culture medium. This acidic medium is ideal for bioleaching, a process that employs acidolysis and complexolysis to extract metals from rocks. Additionally, the strain synthesized siderophores, molecules capable of mobilizing metals from solid matrices, as verified by the blue CAS colorimetric test. The secretion of siderophores in the culture medium proved advantageous for biomining. The siderophores facilitated the leaching of metal ions, such as manganese, from the rock matrix into the acidified water solution. In addition, the susceptibility of the Martian regolith simulant to the biomining process was assessed by determining the particle size distribution, acid composition after treatment, and geochemical composition of the rock. Although the preliminary results demonstrate successful manganese extraction, further research is required to optimize the extraction technique. To conclude, the A. tubingensis strain exhibits promising abilities in extracting metals from rocks through biomining. Its use could prove useful in future in situ mining operations and environmental remediation efforts. Further research is required to optimize the process and evaluate its feasibility on a larger scale.
