Unconventional quasiparticles emerging in the fractional quantum Hall regime1,2 present the challenge of observing their exotic properties unambiguously. Although the fractional charge of quasiparticles has been demonstrated for nearly three decades3-5, the first convincing evidence of their anyonic quantum statistics has only recently been obtained6,7 and, so far, the so-called scaling dimension that determines the propagation dynamics of the quasiparticles remains elusive. In particular, although the nonlinearity of the tunnelling quasiparticle current should reveal their scaling dimension, the measurements fail to match theory, arguably because this observable is not robust to non-universal complications8-12. Here we expose the scaling dimension from the thermal noise to shot noise crossover and observe an agreement with expectations. Measurements are fitted to the predicted finite-temperature expression involving both the scaling dimension of the quasiparticles and their charge12,13, in contrast to previous charge investigations focusing on the high-bias shot-noise regime14. A systematic analysis, repeated on several constrictions and experimental conditions, consistently matches the theoretical scaling dimensions for the fractional quasiparticles emerging at filling factors ν = 1/3, 2/5 and 2/3. This establishes a central property of fractional quantum Hall anyons and demonstrates a powerful and complementary window into exotic quasiparticles.

PURPOSE: During the last decade, the incidence of anaerobic bacteremia (AB) has been increasing. Patients with AB may develop complex underlying diseases, which can occasionally be accompanied by fatal or fulminant outcomes. However, the risk factors for AB-related mortality remain unclear. Herein, we sought to elucidate the risk factors for AB-related mortality. METHODS: In this multicenter, retrospective, observational study, we enrolled patients with culture-proven AB from six tertiary hospitals in Japan, between January 2012 and December 2021. Data on patient and infection characteristics, laboratory findings, treatment, and outcome were collected, and their associations with mortality were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 520 participants were included. The 30-day mortality in the study cohort was 14.0% (73 patients), and malignant tumors were frequently observed comorbidities in 48% of the entire cohort. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed a Charlson comorbidity score of > 6, serum creatinine level of > 1.17 mg/dL, and hypotension to be independent risk factors for 30-day mortality in AB (odds ratios [ORs] 2.12, 2.25, and 5.12, respectively; p < 0.05), whereas drainage significantly reduced this risk (OR, 0.28; p < 0.0001). Twelve patients (2.3% of the whole cohort and 16.4% of the deceased patients) presented with extremely rapid progression leading to fatal outcome, consistent with "fulminant AB." CONCLUSIONS: This study identified acute circulatory dysfunction and performance of drainage as independent predictive factors for 30-day AB-related mortality and revealed the existence of a fulminant AB sub-phenotype. Our findings could serve as a practical guide to predict the clinical outcomes of AB.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The type IV intermediate filament, nestin, may be a candidate diagnostic marker for combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA). Therefore, the significance of nestin as a diagnostic marker for cHCC-CCA categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) 2019 classification and its relationship with clinicopathological features were examined in the present study. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nestin expression was immunohistochemically assessed in the liver sections from 75 patients with cHCC-CCA, 22 with small duct-type intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), 20 with large duct-type iCCA and 35 with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nestin expression and its relationship with clinicopathological features and genetic alterations were investigated in cHCC-CCA. Nestin expression was detected in significantly more patients with cHCC-CCA (66.7%) than in those with large duct-type iCCA (5%) (P < 0.01), HCC (2.9%) (P < 0.01) and small duct-type iCCA (40.9%) (P < 0.05). Nestin expression was partly associated with neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) and vimentin expression. Nestin expression was also observed in significantly more patients with small duct-type iCCA than in those with large duct-type iCCA and HCC (P < 0.01). Nestin-positive cHCC-CCA was characterized by a smaller tumour size, the more frequent presence of cholangiolocellular carcinoma (CLC) components, a higher rate of p53 overexpression and a higher rate of multiple genetic alterations (P < 0.05). Furthermore, p53 overexpression was associated with a higher histological grade and multiple genetic alterations (P < 0.05) in nestin-positive cHCC-CCA. CONCLUSION: Nestin may be a useful diagnostic marker for a specific subgroup of cHCC-CCA and small duct-type iCCA associated with CLC components, p53 mutations and multiple genetic alterations, which are related to stemness and multipotent differentiation.

STUDY QUESTION: How is the localisation of ovarian follicles affected by ageing and chronic diseases? SUMMARY ANSWER: Ovarian follicles shift deeper towards the medulla, due to thickening of the tunica albuginea (TA), with ageing and some major common chronic diseases. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The ovary undergoes morphological and functional changes with ageing. The follicular pool follows these changes with alterations in the amount and distribution of residual follicles. Diseases causing a chronic inflammatory process are associated with morphological changes and impaired ovarian function. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: We conducted a cross-sectional study, examining 90 ovaries from 90 female monkeys. The samples were collected from April 2018 to March 2019 at Tsukuba Primate Research Center in National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition, Japan. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Ovarian samples were obtained from cynomolgus monkeys that died from natural causes or were euthanised. Ovarian sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) for histological analyses. In ovarian sections from 64 female macaques aged 0-25 years, a total of 13 743 follicles at different developmental stages (primordial, intermediary, primary, early secondary and late secondary) were assessed to determine the depth of each follicle from the outer surface of the ovarian cortex to the far end of the follicle, by using a digital imaging software. TA thickness was measured as sum of basal membrane and tunica collagen layer for each ovary under H&E staining. To explore the possibility of age-related trends in ovarian morphometric characteristics, samples were divided into four different age groups (0-3 years (pre-menarche), 4-9 years, 10-14 years and 15-20 years). To evaluate the effect of common chronic diseases on ovarian morphometric characteristics, macaques with diabetes mellitus (DM) (n = 10), endometriosis (n = 8) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (n = 8) were compared to age-matched controls without chronic diseases. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Ovarian morphometric analysis revealed that the relative location of follicles became deeper in all age groups according to development of follicles (P < 0.05). Total follicle distance from the ovarian surface was increased with ageing (P < 0.05). In a sub-analysis according to developmental stage, only primordial and intermediary follicles were localised deeper with increasing age (P < 0.05). TA thickness was also increased with ageing (P < 0.05). The localisation of the total number of follicles became deeper in ovaries from monkeys with DM, endometriosis or IBD as compared to the control group (P < 0.05). With DM, analysis of follicles distance at almost each developmental stage was significantly deeper compared to controls (P < 0.05) with the exception of early secondary follicles. With endometriosis, follicles at primary and early and late secondary stages were significantly deeper compared to controls (P < 0.05). Also with IBD, follicles at primary and early and late secondary follicles were significantly deeper compared to controls (P < 0.001). The TA was thicker with DM and endometriosis compared to controls (P < 0.05), but not with IBD (P = 0.16). LARGE SCALE DATA: NA. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Two-dimensional histology was used to assess follicle localisation. The possibility of minimal variations between the measured distance to the actual distance in a spherical structure cannot be excluded. Additionally, the severity of disease was not assessed. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: This study is the first step towards enhancing our understanding of how ageing and chronic diseases affect the relative localisation of dormant and developing follicles. These observations, combined with possible future human studies, may have managerial implications in the field of fertility preservation and other conditions involving ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Areal BMD (aBMD) from DXA is not a sufficiently accurate predictor of fracture. Novel volumetric BMD derived from 3D modeling of the hip from DXA images significantly improved the predictive ability for hip fracture relative to aBMD at the femoral neck, but not aBMD at the total hip. INTRODUCTION: To clarify whether volumetric and geometric indices derived from novel three-dimensional (3D) modeling of the hip using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometric (DXA) images improve hip fracture prediction relative to areal bone mineral density (aBMD). METHODS: We examined 1331 women who had completed the baseline survey and at least one follow-up survey over 20 years (age 40-79 years at baseline). Each survey included aBMD measurement at the hip by DXA. Volumetric and geometric indices of the hip at baseline and the 10-year follow-up were estimated from DXA images using a 3D modeling algorithm. Incident hip fractures during the 20-year follow-up period were identified through self-report. Cox proportional hazards regression models allowing for repeated measurements of predictors and outcomes were constructed, and their predictive ability for hip fracture was evaluated using areas under receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) and net reclassification improvement (NRI) over aBMD at the femoral neck (FN) and total hip (TH) as references. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 19.8 years, 68 incident hip fractures were identified (2.22/1000 person-years). A significantly larger AUC of trabecular volumetric BMD (vBMD) at the total hip (AUC = 0.741), femoral neck (AUC = 0.748), and intertrochanter (AUC = 0.738) and significant NRI (0.177, 0.149, and 0.195, respectively) were observed compared with FN-aBMD (AUC = 0.701), but not TH-aBMD. CONCLUSIONS: vBMD obtained from 3D modeling using routinely obtained hip DXA images significantly improved hip fracture risk prediction over conventional FN-aBMD, but not TH-aBMD. The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, characterized by Cooper pairs condensed at finite momentum, has been a long-sought state that remains unresolved in many classes of fermionic systems, including superconductors and ultracold atoms. A fascinating aspect of the FFLO state is the emergence of periodic nodal planes in real space, but its observation is still lacking. Here we investigate the superconducting order parameter at high magnetic fields H applied perpendicular to the ab plane in a high-purity single crystal of FeSe. The heat capacity and magnetic torque provide thermodynamic evidence for a distinct superconducting phase at the low-temperature/high-field corner of the phase diagram. Despite the bulk superconductivity, spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy performed on the same crystal demonstrates that the order parameter vanishes at the surface upon entering the high-field phase. These results provide the first demonstration of a pinned planar node perpendicular to H, which is consistent with a putative FFLO state.

The rare decay K_{L}âπ^{0}νν[over ¯] was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of (7.20±0.05_{stat}±0.66_{syst})×10^{-10}, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from K^{±} and scattered K_{L} decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be 1.22±0.26. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of 4.9×10^{-9} on the branching fraction of K_{L}âπ^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level.

Aerosols interact with radiation and clouds. Substantial progress made over the past 40 years in observing, understanding, and modeling these processes helped quantify the imbalance in the Earth's radiation budget caused by anthropogenic aerosols, called aerosol radiative forcing, but uncertainties remain large. This review provides a new range of aerosol radiative forcing over the industrial era based on multiple, traceable, and arguable lines of evidence, including modeling approaches, theoretical considerations, and observations. Improved understanding of aerosol absorption and the causes of trends in surface radiative fluxes constrain the forcing from aerosol-radiation interactions. A robust theoretical foundation and convincing evidence constrain the forcing caused by aerosol-driven increases in liquid cloud droplet number concentration. However, the influence of anthropogenic aerosols on cloud liquid water content and cloud fraction is less clear, and the influence on mixed-phase and ice clouds remains poorly constrained. Observed changes in surface temperature and radiative fluxes provide additional constraints. These multiple lines of evidence lead to a 68% confidence interval for the total aerosol effective radiative forcing of -1.6 to -0.6 W m-2, or -2.0 to -0.4 W m-2 with a 90% likelihood. Those intervals are of similar width to the last Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment but shifted toward more negative values. The uncertainty will narrow in the future by continuing to critically combine multiple lines of evidence, especially those addressing industrial-era changes in aerosol sources and aerosol effects on liquid cloud amount and on ice clouds.

We present resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements of superconducting FeSe in intense magnetic fields up to 35 T applied parallel to the ab plane. At low temperatures, the upper critical field µ_{0}H_{c2}^{ab} shows an anomalous upturn, while thermal conductivity exhibits a discontinuous jump at µ_{0}H^{*}≈24 T well below µ_{0}H_{c2}^{ab}, indicating a first-order phase transition in the superconducting state. This demonstrates the emergence of a distinct field-induced superconducting phase. Moreover, the broad resistive transition at high temperatures abruptly becomes sharp upon entering the high-field phase, indicating a dramatic change of the magnetic-flux properties. We attribute the high-field phase to the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, where the formation of planar nodes gives rise to a segmentation of the flux-line lattice. We point out that strongly orbital-dependent pairing as well as spin-orbit interactions, the multiband nature, and the extremely small Fermi energy are important for the formation of the FFLO state in FeSe.

Studies on community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and pneumococcal pneumonia (PP) related to the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) introduction in Asia are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological and microbiological determinants of hospitalised CAP and PP after PCV13 was introduced in Japan. This observational hospital-based surveillance study included children aged ⩽15 years, admitted to hospitals in and around Chiba City, Japan. Participants had bacterial pneumonia based on a positive blood or sputum culture for bacterial pathogens. Serotype and antibiotic-susceptibility testing of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae isolates from patients with bacterial pneumonia were assessed. The CAP hospitalisation rate per 1000 child-years was 17.7, 14.3 and 9.7 in children aged <5 years and 1.18, 2.64 and 0.69 in children aged 5-15 years in 2008, 2012 and 2018, respectively. There was a 45% and 41% reduction in CAP hospitalisation rates, between the pre-PCV7 and PCV13 periods, respectively. Significant reductions occurred in the proportion of CAP due to PP and PCV13 serotypes. Conversely, no change occurred in the proportion of CAP caused by H. influenzae. The incidence of hospitalised CAP in children aged ⩽15 years was significantly reduced after the introduction of PCV13 in Japan. Continuous surveillance is necessary to detect emerging PP serotypes.

BACKGROUND: Cryopreservation of zona pellucida (ZP)-free embryos provides more options for somatic cell nuclear transfer, particularly during handmade cloning. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether the removal of the ZP affects the development of porcine zygotes after vitrification and warming. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We determined the appropriate volume of the corresponding medium for the individual culture of ZP-intact and -free embryos and evaluated the protection effect of ZP during cryopreservation on the resulting development of the vitrified-warmed zygotes. RESULTS: The volume of culture medium influenced the development of ZP-intact zygotes, and a volume of 15 µL was most suitable for their development. However, the volume of culture medium did not modify the development of ZP-free zygotes. The removal of the ZP before vitrification did not adversely affect embryonic development or quality of the resulting blastocysts. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the removal of the ZP does not cause detrimental effects to the development of vitrified-warmed zygotes.

In ovarian cancer patients, chemotherapy can be an independent risk factor for the development of thromboembolic complications, such as venous thromboembolism (VTE). The factors and their values that lead to the development of VTE are remaining unknown in patients undergoing chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin. This study investigated serial rheological parameters (D-dimer, red blood cell count, hematocrit, and plasma viscosity) for VTE that developed following chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Forty-eight ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy were enrolled in this study. A significant difference in the mean values of plasma viscosity and hematocrit was observed between the VTE group (n = 5) and the non-VTE group (n = 43) (P < 0.10). Univariate and multiple regression analyses by stepwise selection identified plasma viscosity as the independent variable associated with VTE development. The VTE incidence was the same as in previous reports. The results support the contention that plasma viscosity could be an index for development of VTE in ovarian cancer after chemotherapy.

Research into causative agents underlying coral disease have focused primarily on bacteria, whereas potential roles of viruses have been largely unaddressed. Bacteriophages may contribute to diseases through the lysogenic introduction of virulence genes into bacteria, or prevent diseases through lysis of bacterial pathogens. To identify candidate phages that may influence the pathogenicity of black band disease (BBD), communities of bacteria (16S rRNA) and T4-bacteriophages (gp23) were simultaneously profiled with amplicon sequencing among BBD-lesions and healthy-coral-tissue of Montipora hispida, as well as seawater (study site: the central Great Barrier Reef). Bacterial community compositions were distinct among BBD-lesions, healthy coral tissue and seawater samples, as observed in previous studies. Surprisingly, however, viral beta diversities based on both operational taxonomic unit (OTU)-compositions and overall viral community compositions of assigned taxa did not differ statistically between the BBD-lesions and healthy coral tissue. Nonetheless, relative abundances of three bacteriophage OTUs, affiliated to Cyanophage PRSM6 and Prochlorococcus phages P-SSM2, were significantly higher in BBD-lesions than in healthy tissue. These OTUs associated with BBD samples suggest the presence of bacteriophages that infect members of the cyanobacteria-dominated BBD community, and thus have potential roles in BBD pathogenicity.

I have, as the Principal Investigator of this study, identified an error in the computation of TBS values in the JPOS cohort, which resulted in the publication of incorrect TBS absolute values [1]. This error was linked to the calibration process for calculating standardized TBS values in the R&D TBS.

Pluripotent stem cells offer the potential for an unlimited source for cell therapy products. However, there is concern regarding the tumorigenicity of these products in humans, mainly due to the possible unintended contamination of undifferentiated cells or transformed cells. Because of the complex nature of these new therapies and the lack of a globally accepted consensus on the strategy for tumorigenicity evaluation, a case-by-case approach is recommended for the risk assessment of each cell therapy product. In general, therapeutic products need to be qualified using available technologies, which ideally should be fully validated. In such circumstances, the developers of cell therapy products may have conducted various tumorigenicity tests and consulted with regulators in respective countries. Here, we critically review currently available in vivo and in vitro testing methods for tumorigenicity evaluation against expectations in international regulatory guidelines. We discuss the value of those approaches, in particular the limitations of in vivo methods, and comment on challenges and future directions. In addition, we note the need for an internationally harmonized procedure for tumorigenicity assessment of cell therapy products from both regulatory and technological perspectives.

A search for the rare decay K_{L}âπ^{0}νν[over ¯] was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to 2.2×10^{19} protons on target, a single event sensitivity of (1.30±0.01_{stat}±0.14_{syst})×10^{-9} was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of 3.0×10^{-9} for the branching fraction of K_{L}âπ^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for K_{L}âπ^{0}X^{0} was also set as 2.4×10^{-9} at the 90% C.L., where X^{0} is an invisible boson with a mass of 135 MeV/c^{2}.

AIM: This study evaluated the relationship between three-dimensional (3D) mean computed tomography (CT) attenuation values of ground-glass nodules (GGN) and pathological invasiveness in early lung adenocarcinoma. The diagnostic accuracy of 3D CT attenuation values was compared with that of two-dimensional (2D) CT attenuation values and standardised uptake value on positron-emission tomography (PET). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Surgical and radiological data from 96 pure or part-solid GGNs of <20 mm were analysed retrospectively. Mean 2D and 3D CT attenuation values of the tumours were obtained with semi-automated volumetric software. Pathological invasiveness was diagnosed according to the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC))/American Thoracic Society (ATS)/European Respiratory Society (ERS) classification. Pre-invasive lesions and minimally invasive adenocarcinomas were classified as non-invasive adenocarcinoma. Univariate and multivariate analyses determined relationships between pathological invasiveness and clinical/radiological findings. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to determine the optimal cut-off value for detecting invasive adenocarcinoma. RESULTS: A total of 66 non-invasive and 30 invasive adenocarcinoma cases between 2010 and 2016 were analysed. Univariate analysis revealed four tumour invasiveness-associated predictors: maximum diameter, SUVmax, mean 2D CT attenuation value, and mean 3D CT attenuation value (p<0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that the maximum diameter, SUVmax, and mean 3D CT attenuation value were significant predictors of pathological invasiveness (p=0.023, 0.022, 0.004). The area under the ROC curve to predict invasive adenocarcinoma for mean 3D CT attenuation value was 0.838 and the cut-off value was -489 HU. CONCLUSION: The mean 3D CT attenuation value could distinguish pre-invasive lesions and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma from invasive adenocarcinoma.
