RESUMEN

Tentative results of LAK-cell and whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) were evaluated in 19 children with advanced chemorefractory tumors. LAK-cells were obtained by extracorporeal incubation of peripheral blood lymphocytes: a germ-cell rhabdomyosarcoma was detected in 4, Askin's tumor--2--2, renal cell carcinoma--2 and miscellaneous--7. Autologous LAK-cells were infused twice: on completion of WBH as body temperature fell to as low as (+) 40 deg. C and on day after WBH. The latter was well tolerated. Complete or partial response to thermochemobiotherapy was reported in 8 patients. Overall 5-year survival was 43% (median follow-up--12.6 months).

RESUMEN

Three-color flow cytofluorometry (FCF) was used to identify minimal residual disease in 124 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treated in accordance with the ALL-myeloblastic leukemia (MBL)-2002/2008 protocol and 36 patients with MBL treated under the MBL-MM-2000 protocol. It was shown that approximately a fifth of children with ALL, 3-color FCF could not monitor minimal residual disease, which required the use of 4- or more-color FCF and parallel determination in these MBL samples by molecular genetic methods. An algorithm of study of MBL by FCF, by additionally using molecular genetic methods, is presented.

RESUMEN

In vitro experiments were conducted to determine the impact of interleukin-2 (IL-2) on apoptosis and function of cytostatic-cultured lymphoid (mononuclear) cells (MNC) of peripheral blood from healthy subjects and children with cancer. Neither slight or any effect on vepesid-16 or carboplatin--cultured MNC apoptosis, nor any phytohemagglutinin--induced proliferation was found. By contrast, in carboplatin- cultured MNC from healthy subjects, IL-2 significantly potentiated their toxicity for tumor cells by producing interferon-gamma. It was concluded that IL-2 predominantly supported MNC functional activity rather than inhibited lymphoid MNC apoptosis in in vitro culture with cytostatic drugs.

RESUMEN

The uptake of chlorine e6 derivatives by peripheral blood leukocytes was studied using a fluorescence-activated sorter. The analysis showed that the order of pigment uptake by leukocyte populations is the following: granulocytes > or = monocytes > lymphocytes. It was found that the accumulation of the pigments in the cell significantly varied. The level of chlorine e6 dimethyl ester accumulated by cells was found to be 15 times higher than that of chlorine e6. It was assumed that the differences in pigment uptake by different types of blood cells are due to structural and morphological features of leukocytes. The data obtained may be useful in developing the new methods of photodynamic therapy.

RESUMEN

The tension of the rabies epidemiological situation in the regions of new constructions in Siberia and the Far East was the result of a wide spread of the infection foci and a great number of domestic animals affected by the disease. All over the territory the main-source of the infective agent for humans are dogs, and only in a few cases wild animals. In the mountainous and steppe regions of the south-eastern part of the Transbaikal territory a natural focus of rabies has been revealed. A scheme for dividing the territory into rabies epidemiological regions has been developed on the basis of studying the factors contributing to the dynamics of the epidemic and epizootic processes, as well as the epizootic situation (in the Chita and Amur regions used as an example).

RESUMEN

Raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides Gray) have been shown to take part in the circulation of rabies virus within their natural area in the Far East and thus to be dangerous as a source of infection for humans and domestic animals. The disease has been registered in the areas with high population density of this species, the spread of infection reaching 13 +/- 4.6% in the years of survey. The results of the preliminary determination of the sensitivity of raccoon dogs and the schematic map showing the spread of rabies among the animals of this species are presented.

RESUMEN

We studied expression and functional activity of tumor cell P-gp in children with various leukemia variants and analyzed its prognostic role in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Functional activity of P-gp increased in acute myeloid leukemia, relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (in comparison with primary disease), and in a group of patients in whom no remission was attained. The survival of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia was lower in cases with increased expression and function of P-gp.

RESUMEN

We studied accumulation of porphyrin photosensitizers chlorine e6, hematoporphyrin, and their derivatives by different lymphocyte subpopulations. The intensity of staining of B lymphocytes and natural killer cells with photosensitizers was higher compared to T lymphocytes. T cell subpopulation differed by their ability to bind photosensitizers. Relative accumulation of dimethyl esters of chlorine e6 and hematoporphyrin in cells surpassed that of nonesterified porphyrins.
