Artefacts made from stones, bones and teeth are fundamental to our understanding of human subsistence strategies, behaviour and culture in the Pleistocene. Although these resources are plentiful, it is impossible to associate artefacts to specific human individuals1 who can be morphologically or genetically characterized, unless they are found within burials, which are rare in this time period. Thus, our ability to discern the societal roles of Pleistocene individuals based on their biological sex or genetic ancestry is limited2-5. Here we report the development of a non-destructive method for the gradual release of DNA trapped in ancient bone and tooth artefacts. Application of the method to an Upper Palaeolithic deer tooth pendant from Denisova Cave, Russia, resulted in the recovery of ancient human and deer mitochondrial genomes, which allowed us to estimate the age of the pendant at approximately 19,000-25,000 years. Nuclear DNA analysis identifies the presumed maker or wearer of the pendant as a female individual with strong genetic affinities to a group of Ancient North Eurasian individuals who lived around the same time but were previously found only further east in Siberia. Our work redefines how cultural and genetic records can be linked in prehistoric archaeology.

Genomic analyses of Neanderthals have previously provided insights into their population history and relationship to modern humans1-8, but the social organization of Neanderthal communities remains poorly understood. Here we present genetic data for 13 Neanderthals from two Middle Palaeolithic sites in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia: 11 from Chagyrskaya Cave9,10 and 2 from Okladnikov Cave11-making this one of the largest genetic studies of a Neanderthal population to date. We used hybridization capture to obtain genome-wide nuclear data, as well as mitochondrial and Y-chromosome sequences. Some Chagyrskaya individuals were closely related, including a father-daughter pair and a pair of second-degree relatives, indicating that at least some of the individuals lived at the same time. Up to one-third of these individuals' genomes had long segments of homozygosity, suggesting that the Chagyrskaya Neanderthals were part of a small community. In addition, the Y-chromosome diversity is an order of magnitude lower than the mitochondrial diversity, a pattern that we found is best explained by female migration between communities. Thus, the genetic data presented here provide a detailed documentation of the social organization of an isolated Neanderthal community at the easternmost extent of their known range.

Denisova Cave in southern Siberia is the type locality of the Denisovans, an archaic hominin group who were related to Neanderthals1-4. The dozen hominin remains recovered from the deposits also include Neanderthals5,6 and the child of a Neanderthal and a Denisovan7, which suggests that Denisova Cave was a contact zone between these archaic hominins. However, uncertainties persist about the order in which these groups appeared at the site, the timing and environmental context of hominin occupation, and the association of particular hominin groups with archaeological assemblages5,8-11. Here we report the analysis of DNA from 728 sediment samples that were collected in a grid-like manner from layers dating to the Pleistocene epoch. We retrieved ancient faunal and hominin mitochondrial (mt)DNA from 685 and 175 samples, respectively. The earliest evidence for hominin mtDNA is of Denisovans, and is associated with early Middle Palaeolithic stone tools that were deposited approximately 250,000 to 170,000 years ago; Neanderthal mtDNA first appears towards the end of this period. We detect a turnover in the mtDNA of Denisovans that coincides with changes in the composition of faunal mtDNA, and evidence that Denisovans and Neanderthals occupied the site repeatedly-possibly until, or after, the onset of the Initial Upper Palaeolithic at least 45,000 years ago, when modern human mtDNA is first recorded in the sediments.

The pig is a natural host for influenza viruses and integrally involved in virus evolution through interspecies transmissions between humans and swine. Swine have many physiological, anatomical, and immunological similarities to humans, and are an excellent model for human influenza. Here, we employed single cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) and flow cytometry to characterize the major leukocyte subsets in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), twenty-one days after H1N1pdm09 infection or respiratory immunization with an adenoviral vector vaccine expressing hemagglutinin and nucleoprotein with or without IL-1ß. Mapping scRNA-seq clusters from BAL onto those previously described in peripheral blood facilitated annotation and highlighted differences between tissue resident and circulating immune cells. ScRNA-seq data and functional assays revealed lasting impacts of immune challenge on BAL populations. First, mucosal administration of IL-1ß reduced the number of functionally active Treg cells. Second, influenza infection upregulated IFI6 in BAL cells and decreased their susceptibility to virus replication in vitro. Our data provide a reference map of porcine BAL cells and reveal lasting immunological consequences of influenza infection and respiratory immunization in a highly relevant large animal model for respiratory virus infection.

This research is relevant, as AL-amyloidosis refers to a systemic type of disease characterized by aggregation of an improperly folded light chain of an immunoglobulin, mainly in the heart and kidneys, causing organ failure. This study describes the clinical experience of introducing a patient with cardiac amyloidosis associated with multiple myeloma (MM). A clinical case of a patient diagnozed with amyloidosis was considered. Magnetic resonance imaging signs of cardiac amyloidosis were confirmed due to the presence of concentric biventricular hypertrophy without dilation, atrial septal hypertrophy, a tendency to atrial dilation, thickening of valve flaps and atrial walls. Upon admission to the research institute, the patient had an anasarca. More accurate recognition of AL-amyloidosis by cardiologists allows for prescribing earlier treatment and improving results. Conventional treatment of MM and AL-amyloidosis includes a combination of dexamethasone with bortezomib and endoxan. Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation after taking high doses of melphalan has become another treatment option and has led to remission in some patients. The novelty of the study is that an example of a timely complete diagnosis and treatment of a combination of these two diseases was presented, as a result of which the patient has achieved a complete haematological and partial organ response to the underlying disease.

Mercury (Hg) methylation is a microbially mediated process that converts inorganic Hg into bioaccumulative, neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). The metabolic activity of methylating organisms is highly dependent on biogeochemical conditions, which subsequently influences MeHg production. However, our understanding of the ecophysiology of methylators in natural ecosystems is still limited. Here, we identified potential locations of MeHg production in the anoxic, sulfidic hypolimnion of a freshwater lake. At these sites, we used shotgun metagenomics to characterize microorganisms with the Hg-methylation gene hgcA. Putative methylators were dominated by hgcA sequences divergent from those in well-studied, confirmed methylators. Using genome-resolved metagenomics, we identified organisms with hgcA (hgcA+) within the Bacteroidetes and the recently described Kiritimatiellaeota phyla. We identified hgcA+ genomes derived from sulfate-reducing bacteria, but these accounted for only 22% of hgcA+ genome coverage. The most abundant hgcA+ genomes were from fermenters, accounting for over half of the hgcA gene coverage. Many of these organisms also mediate hydrolysis of polysaccharides, likely from cyanobacterial blooms. This work highlights the distribution of the Hg-methylation genes across microbial metabolic guilds and indicate that primary degradation of polysaccharides and fermentation may play an important but unrecognized role in MeHg production in the anoxic hypolimnion of freshwater lakes.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models of psychosis postulate an important role of Theory of mind (ToM) in the formation and maintenance of delusions, but research on this plausible conjecture has gathered conflicting findings. In addition, it is still an open question whether problems in emotion recognition (ER) are associated with delusions. We examined the association of problems in ToM and ER with different aspects of delusions in a large sample of patients with psychosis enrolled in a therapy trial. This also enabled us to explore the possible impact of ToM and ER on one part of patients' social life: the quality of their therapeutic relationship. METHODS: Patients with psychotic disorders and delusions and/or hallucinations (n = 185) and healthy controls (n = 48) completed a ToM picture sequencing task and an ER task. Subsequently, patients were enrolled in a randomized-controlled Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) trial (ISRCTN29242879). Patients and therapists rated the quality of the therapeutic relationship during the first five sessions of therapy. RESULTS: In comparison to controls, patients were impaired in both ToM and ER. Patients with deficits in ER experienced more severe delusional distress, whereas ToM problems were not related to delusions. In addition, deficits in ER predicted a less favorable therapeutic relationship and interactional problems viewed by the therapist. Impaired ER also moderated (increased) the negative influence of delusions on the therapeutic relationship and interactional difficulties viewed by the therapist. CONCLUSIONS: Cognitive models on the formation and maintenance of delusions should consider ER as a potential candidate that might be related to the formation and maintenance of delusional distress, whereas problems in ToM might not be directly related to delusions and secondary dimensions of delusions. In addition, problems in ER in patients with psychosis might have an impact on the quality of the therapeutic relationship and patients with problems in ER are more likely to be viewed as problematic by their therapists. Nevertheless, training ER might be a way to improve the quality of the therapeutic relationship and potentially the effectiveness of CBT or other interventions for patients with psychosis.

In this work, a generic exhaust gas test bench is introduced on which reproducible experiments can be performed to gain a deeper understanding of processes during exhaust gas aftertreatment of internal combustion engines. We present the design and initial flow characterization as well as tomographic measurement results of gaseous water distributions. The aim of the development was to provide a generic geometry as well as highly reproducible process boundary conditions for numerical simulation of exhaust aftertreatment phenomena. The presented initial measurements are intended to demonstrate the qualification of the test bench for extensive experimental characterization ranging from measurements of the spray injection, film evaporation, and reaction kinetics to the highly complex multiphase flow conditions during selective catalytic reduction (SCR) processes, which are characterized by high mass flows and temperatures, pronounced transients, and a corrosive atmosphere.

Symbioses between plants and mycorrhizal fungi are ubiquitous in ecosystems and strengthen the plants' defense against aboveground herbivores. Here, we studied the underlying regulatory networks and biochemical mechanisms in leaves induced by ectomycorrhizae that modify herbivore interactions. Feeding damage and oviposition by the widespread poplar leaf beetle Chrysomela populi were reduced on the ectomycorrhizal hybrid poplar Populus × canescens Integration of transcriptomics, metabolomics, and volatile emission patterns via mass difference networks demonstrated changes in nitrogen allocation in the leaves of mycorrhizal poplars, down-regulation of phenolic pathways, and up-regulation of defensive systems, including protease inhibitors, chitinases, and aldoxime biosynthesis. Ectomycorrhizae had a systemic influence on jasmonate-related signaling transcripts. Our results suggest that ectomycorrhizae prime wounding responses and shift resources from constitutive phenol-based to specialized protective compounds. Consequently, symbiosis with ectomycorrhizal fungi enabled poplars to respond to leaf beetle feeding with a more effective arsenal of defense mechanisms compared with nonmycorrhizal poplars, thus demonstrating the importance of belowground plant-microbe associations in mitigating aboveground biotic stress.

DNA library preparation for high-throughput sequencing of genomic DNA usually involves ligation of adapters to double-stranded DNA fragments. However, for highly degraded DNA, especially ancient DNA, library preparation has been found to be more efficient if each of the two DNA strands are converted into library molecules separately. We present a new method for single-stranded library preparation, ssDNA2.0, which is based on single-stranded DNA ligation with T4 DNA ligase utilizing a splinter oligonucleotide with a stretch of random bases hybridized to a 3΄ biotinylated donor oligonucleotide. A thorough evaluation of this ligation scheme shows that single-stranded DNA can be ligated to adapter oligonucleotides in higher concentration than with CircLigase (an RNA ligase that was previously chosen for end-to-end ligation in single-stranded library preparation) and that biases in ligation can be minimized when choosing splinters with 7 or 8 random nucleotides. We show that ssDNA2.0 tolerates higher quantities of input DNA than CircLigase-based library preparation, is less costly and better compatible with automation. We also provide an in-depth comparison of library preparation methods on degraded DNA from various sources. Most strikingly, we find that single-stranded library preparation increases library yields from tissues stored in formalin for many years by several orders of magnitude.

The BD FACSVia™ System features novel designs in hardware, software, and instrument QC. We compared the performance of the BD FACSVia System using the BD Leucocount™ kit with the BD FACSCalibur™ flow cytometer. Leucoreduced platelet (PLT, n = 252) and red blood cell (RBC, n = 278) specimens were enrolled at four sites. Each specimen was stained in four tubes using the BD Leucocount kit reagents and acquired on the two systems. BD Leucocount Control cells (high and low) were used to evaluate the inter-site reproducibility on the BD FACSVia System at three sites over 20 days. Deming regression and Bland-Altman analysis were performed to determine the WBC absolute counts on the BD FACSVia System vs. the BD FACSCalibur system. Assay accuracy for the range of 0-350 WBCs/µl was adequate. For samples with <25 WBCs/µl, the bias with 95% limits of agreement was 0.136 (-1.897 to 2.169) WBC/µl for PLTs (n = 184) and 0.170 (-2.025 to 2.365) WBC/µl for RBCs (n = 193). For inter-site reproducibility, the CV% was 6.46% (upper 95% CI 7.16%) for the PLT high control and 9.49% (10.52%) for the PLT low control. The CV% was 7.51% (8.32%) for the RBC high control and 10.76% (11.92%) for the RBC low control. The BD FACSVia System reported equivalent results of WBC absolute counts for leucoreduced PLT and RBC samples compared to the BD FACSCalibur system. BACKGROUND: Understanding cardiac MR T1 mapping values might require examination of the effects of age, gender, and heart failure risk factors. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the effects of gender, age, and presence of heart failure risk factors on myocardial native T1 and extracellular volume fraction (ECV). STUDY TYPE: Retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study. POPULATION: Secondary analysis of cardiac MR data, separated by gender and health status, based on the presence of at least one heart failure risk factor. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Cardiac MR imaging at 1.5T, including T1 mapping using the SAturation recovery single-SHot Acquisition (SASHA) sequence. ASSESSMENT: Interventricular septal region-of-interest analysis for assessment of native T1 and ECV. STATISTICAL TESTS: Group comparisons performed using Student t-test, or nonparametric equivalent. Linear regression was used to assess relationships between age and T1 measurements. RESULTS: Native T1 and ECV were available in 187 and 143 subjects, respectively. T1 and ECV were independent of age in all groups (Native T1 : healthy women P = 0.655; healthy men P = 0.906; at-risk women P = 0.487; at-risk men P = 0.683; ECV: healthy women P = 0.685; healthy men P = 0.199; at-risk women P = 0.152; at-risk men P = 0.747). T1 and ECV were higher in healthy women versus men (1202 ± 30 ms versus 1167 ± 36 ms, P = 0.0000 and 22 ± 2% versus 20 ± 2%, P = 0.0089), while values were similar in women and men with risk factors (1197 ± 55 ms versus 1193 ± 45 ms, P = 0.6556, 21 ± 2% versus 21 ± 3%, P = 0.5039). No differences existed in native T1 or ECV between women with or without risk factors (P = 0.6344 and P = 0.1026), whereas men with risk factors showed higher native T1 values (P = 0.0070). DATA CONCLUSION: Native T1 and ECV measured with SASHA do not vary with age, regardless of gender or the presence of factors for heart failure. Native T1 and ECV are higher in healthy women than men, but do not differ in the presence of risk factors, suggesting a different myocardial response to risk factors between genders. BACKGROUND: Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) makes polyvinyl chloride flexible for use in blood bags and stabilizes the red blood cell (RBC) membrane preventing excessive hemolysis. DEHP migrates into the blood product and rodent studies have suggested that DEHP exposure may be associated with adverse health effects albeit at high dosages. Although structurally and functionally similar to DEHP, di(2-ethylhexyl)terephthalate (DEHT; or Eastman 168 SG [Eastman Chemical Company]) is metabolically distinct with a comprehensive and benign toxicology profile. This study evaluated RBC stability in DEHT-plasticized bags with AS-1 and PAGGSM compared to conventional DEHP-plasticized bags with AS-1. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Thirty-six whole blood units were collected into CPD solution, leukoreduced, centrifuged, and divided into RBCs and plasma. To limit donor-related variability, three ABO-identical RBCs were mixed together and then divided equally and stored among the three different plasticizer and additive solution combinations. RBCs from 12 trios were analyzed for a standard panel of in vitro variables on Day 0 and after storage. RESULTS: No individual bag on Day 42 exceeded the US 1.0% hemolysis criteria. While hemolysis during storage was higher in the DEHT bags, the PAGGSM RBCs were close to the control RBCs (0.38% vs. 0.32%, respectively). ATP retention was higher than 70% and potassium levels were similar regardless of plasticizer. Additional RBC variables exhibited some significant differences but were not viewed as clinically important. CONCLUSION: DEHT/PAGGSM provides similar hemolysis protection to that of DEHP/AS-1. Although hemolysis values with DEHT and AS-1 are higher than that of DEHP, DEHT is a potential DEHP alternative.

BACKGROUND: Resection of residual masses after chemotherapy plays a crucial role in management of patients with germ cell tumours (GCTs). The extent of surgery is controversial and we present the experiences from Aarhus University Hospital over a 20-year period. The aim was to evaluate survival, complications, working ability and quality of life (QOL) following a limited surgical procedure performed to resect residual masses in non-seminomatous testicular cancer patients after chemotherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A consecutive patient cohort of 109 patients having surgery between 1993 and 2013 was investigated. Hospital records were reviewed and complications were graded according to the Clavien-Dindo classification. QOL data were assessed in a cross-sectional analysis using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), QLQ-C30 version 3.0. Patients were matched 1:1 with controls to evaluate the influence of surgical resection on the QOL. RESULTS: With a median follow-up of 10.3 years, 11 relapses in retroperitoneum were recorded in 10 patients (9%), and four patients (5%) died of disease progression. The majority of relapses in patients considered having no evidence of disease (NED) after primary retroperitoneal surgery occurred 10 + years after treatment and was outside the field of the elective lymph node dissection. Twenty-seven (44%) grade I, 15 (24%) grade II, 7 (11%) grade IIIa and 13 (21%) grade IIIb complications were recorded. No grade IV and V complications were observed. Twenty-three patients (20%) reported loss of antegrade ejaculation. We found no significant differences between patients and controls regarding QOL. CONCLUSION: The survival outcome and complication rate are favourable and are comparable to studies involving full and modified template lymph node dissection. We find that limited resection constitutes an applicable and safe procedure. Limited surgical resection did not influence the patients' long-term QOL. Longer follow-up might be considered.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the Windmill-task, a new objective assessment tool to quantify the presence of mirror movements (MMs) in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP), which are typically assessed with the observation-based Woods and Teuber scale (W&T). DESIGN: Prospective, observational, cohort pilot study. SETTING: Children's hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Prospective cohort of children (N=23) with UCP (age range, 6-15y, mean age, 10.5±2.7y). INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The concurrent validity of the Windmill-task is assessed, and the sensitivity and specificity for MM detection are compared between both assessments. To assess the concurrent validity, Windmill-task data are compared with W&T data using Spearman rank correlations (ρ) for 2 conditions: affected hand moving vs less affected hand moving. Sensitivity and specificity are compared by measuring the mean percentage of children being assessed inconsistently across both assessments. RESULTS: Outcomes of both assessments correlated significantly (affected hand moving: ρ=.520; P=.005; less affected hand moving: ρ=.488; P=.009). However, many children displayed MMs on the Windmill-task, but not on the W&T (sensitivity: affected hand moving: 27.5%; less affected hand moving: 40.6%). Only 2 children displayed MMs on the W&T, but not on the Windmill-task (specificity: affected hand moving: 2.9%; less affected hand moving: 1.4%). CONCLUSIONS: The Windmill-task seems to be a valid tool to assess MMs in children with UCP and has an additional advantage of sensitivity to detect MMs.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Olfactory functions are altered to a variable degree by chronic liver disease. Few studies including only small populations of patients emphasized the possibility of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) influencing olfactory nervous tasks. So far, no study has explicitly focused on olfactory function depending on the severity of HE as assessed by objective diagnostic procedures. Thus we performed a study using the "Sniffin' Sticks" test system, critical flicker-fusion frequency (CFF) and clinical West Haven criteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 54 cirrhotic patients with liver cirrhosis were included. Furthermore, 43 adult volunteers participating as a non-cirrhotic control group. Olfactory testing was performed using the "Sniffin' Stick" test battery (Burghart Medizintechnik, Wedel, Germany) which renders a widely-used tool both in clinical and research settings for the assessment of olfactory threshold, odor identification and discrimination. Several complications of cirrhosis were diagnosed by reference methods. Statistical analysis of cirrhosis-associated complications and their relation to olfactory function was performed. Assessment of HE and classification of different stages were performed according to clinical criteria (West- Haven criteria) and according to CFF, which was determined using a portable analyzer. RESULTS: Olfactory function was significantly reduced in cirrhotic patients (in 61.1%) compared to controls (p < 0.001). Among cirrhotics patients, the prevalence of olfactory deficits (hyposmia, anosmia) increased with the severity of HE as assessed by CFF and clinical criteria (p = 0.008 and p = 0.097, respectively). No correlation was observed between olfactory deficits and severity of liver disease as assessed by Child-Pugh-Score, etiology of cirrhosis and complications of cirrhosis such as ascites and portal venous hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: Olfactory testing serves as a screening tool for HE and may facilitate grading of HE-severity.

BACKGROUND: Endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the uterus and ovarian endometrioid carcinoma share many morphological and molecular features. Differentiation between simultaneous primary carcinomas and ovarian metastases of an endometrial cancer may be very challenging but is essential for prognostic and therapeutic considerations. CASE PRESENTATION: In the present case study of a 33 year-old patient we used targeted amplicon next-generation re-sequencing for clarifying the origin of synchronous endometrioid cancer of the corpus uteri and the left ovary. The patient developed a metachronous lung metastasis of an endometrioid adenocarcinoma four years after hyster- and adnexectomy, vaginal brachytherapy and treatment with the synthetic steroid tibolone. Removal of the metastasis and megestrol treatment for seven years led to a complete remission. A total of 409 genes from the Ampliseq Comprehensive Cancer Panel (Ion Torrent, Thermo Fisher) were analysed by next generation sequencing and mutations in 10 genes, including ARID1A, CTNNB1, PIK3CA and PTEN were identified and confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Primary endometrial as well as ovarian cancer showed an identical mutational profile, suggesting the presence of an ovarian metastasis of the endometrial cancer, rather than a simultaneous endometrial and ovarian cancer. The metachronous lung metastasis showed a different mutational profile compared to the primary cancer. Immunohistochemical staining of the corresponding proteins suggested that the tumour development was driven by alterations in the protein function rather than by changes of the protein abundance in the cell. CONCLUSIONS: Our results have demonstrated next generation sequencing as a valuable tool in the differentiation of synchronous primary tumours and metastases, which has an important impact on the clinical decision making process. Similar to breast cancer, targeted therapies based on mutational tumour profiling will become increasingly important in endometrial and ovarian cancer. In summary, our results support the usage of next generation sequencing as a supplementary diagnostic tool, assisting in personalized precision medicine.

Several vanadium(V) complexes with either dipic-based or Schiff base ligands were synthesized. The complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 13C, and 51V NMR spectroscopy, as well as mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, they were tested toward their catalytic deperoxidation behavior and a significant difference between 4-heptyl hydroperoxide and cyclohexyl hydroperoxide was observed. In the case of 4-heptyl hydroperoxide, the selectivity toward the corresponding ketone was higher than with cyclohexyl hydroperoxide. DFT calculations performed on the vanadium complex showed that selective decomposition of secondary hydroperoxides with vanadium(V) to yield the corresponding ketone and water is indeed energetically feasible. The computed catalytic path, involving cleavage of the O-O bond, hydrogen transfer, release of ketone/water, and finally addition of hydroperoxide, can proceed without the generation of radical species.

PURPOSE: After a short hospital stay of just some days follows long-term outpatient care for breast cancer patients. The aim of the study is to describe the information needs of breast cancer outpatients and to get in touch with aspects of health literacy, as well as contact various health care workers. METHODS: In a multicenter study, patients were asked about their information needs 10 weeks after surgery. The analysis on hand includes data about 1248 female patients. In addition to descriptive analyses identifying the most prevalent information needs, logistic regression analyses were calculated to identify factors associated with these. RESULTS: The results show that information needs of breast cancer outpatients are mainly in "follow-up after acute treatment", "coping with long-term side effects", and "heredity of breast cancer". In addition to sociodemographic patient characteristics, perceived helpful contacts with various health care workers as well as a satisfactory patient's level of health literacy reduced the probability of unmet information needs. CONCLUSIONS: Breast cancer outpatients have numerous information needs. In addition to provide information at the right time regarding a specific disease phase, it is important that health professionals' support affected breast cancer patients in coping with the new situation.

RESUMEN

Single-cell level measurements are necessary to characterize the intrinsic biological variability in a population of cells. In this study, we demonstrate that, with the microarrays for mass spectrometry platform, we are able to observe this variability. We monitor environmentally (2-deoxy-D-glucose) and genetically (ΔPFK2) perturbed Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells at the single-cell, few-cell, and population levels. Correlation plots between metabolites from the glycolytic pathway, as well as with the observed ATP/ADP ratio as a measure of cellular energy charge, give biological insight that is not accessible from population-level metabolomic data.
