RESUMEN

The control and active manipulation of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in photonic systems are fundamental in the development of modern spin optics and topological photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate the control of an artificial Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) SOC mediated by photochemical reactions in a microcavity filled with an organic single crystal of photochromic phase-change character. Splitting of the circular polarization components of the optical modes induced by photonic RD SOC is observed experimentally in momentum space. By applying an ultraviolet light beam, we control the spatial molecular orientation through a photochemical reaction, and with that we control the energies of the photonic modes. This way, we realize a reversible conversion of spin splitting of the optical modes with different energies, leading to an optically controlled switching between circularly and linearly polarized optical modes in our device. Our strategy of in situ and reversible engineering of SOC induced by a light field provides a promising approach to actively design and manipulate synthetic gauge fields toward future on-chip integration in photonics and topological photonic devices.

BACKGROUND: Grapevine Pinot gris virus (GPGV) infects grapevines worldwide and causes symptoms such as chlorotic mottling and deformations on leaves, stunted shoots and short panicles, or none of these symptoms if it appears as latent infection. So far, the consequences of GPGV infections for winegrowers are difficult to assess since important information such as plant performance at different GPGV infection levels and symptom expression are not fully clarified. METHODS: In order to investigate the course of GPGV spread, annual visual evaluations and ELISA tests were conducted over 3-4 consecutive years in four GPGV-infected vineyards in southern Germany: GEM, HEC, NIM, and REI. The program PATCHY was used to analyze spatial disease patterns. Sanger sequencing was used to determine virus isolates in vines at different GPGV infection levels, to test their respective influence on symptom expression. Yield and GrapeScan (FTIR) analyses were conducted to test the impact of different GPGV infection levels and isolates on fruit quantity and quality. RESULTS: GPGV infections significantly increased in all four vineyards (GEM 22-32%, HEC 50-99%, NIM 83-90%, REI 56-76%) with significant spreading patterns across and along rows. Specific symptom progression patterns were not observed. According to our results, the virus isolate has an influence on whether symptoms develop during a GPGV infection. While yield analyses revealed that yield losses only occur in symptomatic vines and range from 13 to 96% depending on the severity of symptoms, latent infections have no impact on grape production. No relevant effects of GPGV infections on must quality were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Secondary spread of GPGV was observed in all vineyards monitored, indicating vector-borne transmission that is likely to be accelerated by human viticultural management. GPGV should be further monitored to prevent the accumulation of detrimental symptomatic isolates. The results of this study can be used to assess the risk of GPGV to viticulture and should be considered when developing management strategies against the virus.

N-type electronic doping of organic semiconductors (OSCs) by using superbase compounds shows high doping efficiency (H. Wei, Z. Cheng, T. Wu, Y. Liu, J. Guo, P.-A. Chen, J. Xia, H. Xie, X. Qiu, T. Liu, B. Zhang, J. Hui, Z. Zeng, Y. Bai and Y. Hu, Adv. Mater. 2023, 35, 2300084). While a deprotonation reaction is believed to trigger the doping process, the detailed mechanism therein is not yet fully understood. In the present work we theoretically study the electronic structure of the deprotonated Phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) molecule, as well as the charge transfer (CT) between PCBM and its deprotonated species. We find that deprotonated PCBM without formation of a new bond between the deprotonated side chain and fullerene induces electronic structure with broken spin symmetry, where an in-gap state is singly occupied by an unpaired electron. A second scenario that we find to be possible is the formation of a new bond between the deprotonated side chain and a fullerene. This leads to a spin symmetric electronic structure with partially localized in-gap state, which is expected to contribute less to the effective doping. These results show that the deprotonated PCBM species without new bond formation predominantly accounts for the effective n-type doping of PCBM, an insight that will be useful for optimization of this recently discovered doping method.

Integrated electro-optical switches are essential as one of the fundamental elements in the development of modern optoelectronics. As an architecture for photonic systems exciton polaritons, hybrid bosonic quasiparticles that possess unique properties derived from both excitons and photons, have shown much promise. For this system, we demonstrate a significant improvement of emitted intensity and condensation threshold by applying an electric field to a microcavity filled with an organic microbelt. Our theoretical investigations indicate that the electric field makes the excitons dipolar and induces an enhancement of the exciton-polariton interaction and of the polariton lifetime. Based on these electric field-induced changes, a sub-nanosecond electrical field-enhanced polariton condensate switch is realized at room temperature, providing the basis for developing an on-chip integrated photonic device in the strong light-matter coupling regime.

BACKGROUND: Patients with prior coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) frequently require repeat percutaneous revascularization due to advanced age, progressive coronary artery disease and bypass graft failure. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of either the bypass graft or the native coronary artery may be performed. Randomized trials comparing native vessel PCI with bypass graft PCI are lacking and long-term outcomes have not been reported. METHODS: PROCTOR (NCT03805048) is a prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial, that will include 584 patients presenting with saphenous vein graft (SVG) failure and a clinical indication for revascularization, as determined by the local Heart Team. The trial is designed to compare the clinical and angiographic outcomes in patients randomly allocated in a 1:1 fashion to either a strategy of native vessel PCI or SVG PCI. The primary study endpoint is a 3-year composite of major adverse cardiac events (MACE: all-cause mortality, non-fatal target coronary territory myocardial infarction [MI], or clinically driven target coronary territory revascularization). At 3-years, after evaluation of the primary endpoint, follow-up invasive coronary angiography will be performed. Secondary endpoints comprise individual components of MACE at 1, 3 and 5 years follow-up, PCI-related MI, MI >48 hours after index PCI, target vessel failure, target lesion revascularization, renal failure requiring renal-replacement therapy, angiographic outcomes at 3-years and quality of life (delta Seattle Angina Questionnaire, Canadian Cardiovascular Society Grading Scale and Rose Dyspnea Scale). CONCLUSION: PROCTOR is the first randomized trial comparing an invasive strategy of native coronary artery PCI with SVG PCI in post-CABG patients presenting with SVG failure.

Long-term quantum coherence constitutes one of the main challenges when engineering quantum devices. However, easily accessible means to quantify complex decoherence mechanisms are not readily available, nor are sufficiently stable systems. We harness novel phase-space methods-expressed through non-Gaussian convolutions of highly singular Glauber-Sudarshan quasiprobabilities-to dynamically monitor quantum coherence in polariton condensates with significantly enhanced coherence times. Via intensity- and time-resolved reconstructions of such phase-space functions from homodyne detection data, we probe the systems' resourcefulness for quantum information processing up to the nanosecond regime. Our experimental findings are confirmed through numerical simulations, for which we develop an approach that renders established algorithms compatible with our methodology. In contrast to commonly applied phase-space functions, our distributions can be directly sampled from measured data, including uncertainties, and yield a simple operational measure of quantum coherence via the distribution's variance in phase. Therefore, we present a broadly applicable framework and a platform to explore time-dependent quantum phenomena and resources.

Manipulating bosonic condensates with electric fields is very challenging as the electric fields do not directly interact with the neutral particles of the condensate. Here we demonstrate a simple electric method to tune the vorticity of exciton-polariton condensates in a strong coupling liquid crystal (LC) microcavity with CsPbBr_{3} microplates as active material at room temperature. In such a microcavity, the LC molecular director can be electrically modulated giving control over the polariton condensation in different modes. For isotropic nonresonant optical pumping we demonstrate the spontaneous formation of vortices with topological charges of +1, +2, -2, and -1. The topological vortex charge is controlled by a voltage in the range of 1 to 10 V applied to the microcavity sample. This control is achieved by the interplay of a built-in potential gradient, the anisotropy of the optically active perovskite microplates, and the electrically controllable LC molecular director in our system with intentionally broken rotational symmetry. Besides the fundamental interest in the achieved electric polariton vortex control at room temperature, our work paves the way to micron-sized emitters with electric control over the emitted light's phase profile and quantized orbital angular momentum for information processing and integration into photonic circuits.

BACKGROUND: The Japanese Channel (J-Channel) score was introduced to aid in retrograde percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of chronic total coronary occlusions (CTOs). The predictive value of the J-Channel score has not been compared with established collateral grading systems such as the Rentrop classification and Werner grade. AIMS: To investigate the predictive value of the J-Channel score, Rentrop classification and Werner grade for successful collateral channel (CC) guidewire crossing and technical CTO PCI success. METHODS: A total of 600 prospectively recruited patients underwent CTO PCI. All grading systems were assessed under dual catheter injection. CC guidewire crossing was considered successful if the guidewire reached the distal segment of the CTO vessel through a retrograde approach. Technical CTO PCI success was defined as thrombolysis in myocardial infarction flow grade 3 and residual stenosis <30%. RESULTS: Of 600 patients, 257 (43%) underwent CTO PCI through a retrograde approach. Successful CC guidewire crossing was achieved in 208 (81%) patients. The predictive value of the J-Channel score for CC guidewire crossing (area under curve 0.743) was comparable with the Rentrop classification (0.699, p = 0.094) and superior to the Werner grade (0.663, p = 0.002). Technical CTO PCI success was reported in 232 (90%) patients. The Rentrop classification exhibited a numerically higher discriminatory ability (0.676) compared to the J-Channel score (0.664) and Werner grade (0.589). CONCLUSIONS: The J-channel score might aid in strategic collateral channel selection during retrograde CTO PCI. However, the J-Channel score, Rentrop classification, and Werner grade have limited value in predicting technical CTO PCI success.

Vortices carrying quantized topological charges have potential applications in information processing. In this work, we investigate vortex carriers and waveguides in microcavity polariton condensates, nonresonantly excited by a homogeneous pump with intensity grooves. An intensity groove with a ring shape in the pump gives rise to dark-ring states of the condensate with a π-phase jump, akin to dark solitons. The dark-ring states can be destroyed by a stronger density of the surrounding condensate and reduce into vortex-antivortex pairs. Multiple vortex-pair states are found to be stable in the same dark ring of the pump. When the pump ring is broader, higher-order dark states with multiple π-phase jumps can be obtained, and interestingly they can be used to construct vortex waveguides. If a single vortex is imprinted in such waveguides, it can travel in a particular direction, showing one-way transportation. In other words, an imprinted vortex with a certain charge in a specifically designed higher-order dark state is only allowed to propagate unidirectionally.

Double doping, in which a single dopant molecule induces two charge carriers in an organic semiconductor (OSC), was recently experimentally observed and promises to enhance the efficiency of molecular doping. Here we present a theoretical investigation of p-type molecular double doping in a CN6-CP:bithiophene-thienothiophene OSC system. Our analysis is based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the electronic ground state. In a molecular complex with two OSC oligomers and one CN6-CP dopant molecule, we explicitly demonstrate double integer charge transfer and find the formation of two individual polarons on the OSC molecules and a dianion dopant molecule. We show that the vibrational modes and related infrared absorption spectrum of this complex can be traced back to those of the charged dopant and OSC molecules in their isolated forms. The near-infrared optical absorption spectrum calculated by time-dependent DFT shows features of both typical intramolecular polaron excitations and weak intermolecular charge transfer excitations associated with the doping-induced polaron states.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will outline the current evidence on the anatomical, functional, and physiological tools that may be applied in the evaluation of patients with late recurrent angina after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Furthermore, we discuss management strategies and propose an algorithm to guide decision-making for this complex patient population. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with prior CABG often present with late recurrent angina as a result of bypass graft failure and progression of native coronary artery disease (CAD). These patients are generally older, have a higher prevalence of comorbidities, and more complex atherosclerotic lesion morphology compared to CABG-naïve patients. In addition, guideline recommendations are based on studies in which post-CABG patients have been largely excluded. Several invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tools are currently available to assess graft patency, the hemodynamic significance of native CAD progression, left ventricular function, and myocardial viability. Such tools, in particular the latest generation coronary computed tomography angiography, are part of a systematic diagnostic work-up to guide optimal repeat revascularization strategy in patients presenting with late recurrent angina after CABG.

RESUMEN

The relevance of aerosols for the transmission of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is still debated. However, over time, in addition to distancing and hygiene rules, aerosol physics-based measures such as wearing face masks and ventilating indoor spaces were found to be efficient in reducing infections. In an interdisciplinary workshop "Aerosol & SARS-CoV-2" of the Association for Aerosol Research (GAeF) in cooperation with the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP), the Professional Association of General Air Technology of the VDMA, the German Society for Virology (GfV), the Health Technology Society (GG) and the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM) under the auspices of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in March 2021, the need for research and coordination on this topic was addressed. Fundamental findings from the various disciplines as well as interdisciplinary perspectives on aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and infection mitigation measures are summarized here. Finally, open research questions and needs are presented.

Secretion of pulmonary surfactant in the alveoli of the lungs is essential to maintain lung function. Stretching of alveoli during lung inflation is the main trigger for surfactant secretion. Yet, the molecular mechanisms how mechanical distension of alveoli results in surfactant secretion are still elusive. The alveolar epithelium consists of alveolar epithelial type I (ATI) and surfactant secreting type II (ATII) cells. ATI, but not ATII cells, express caveolae, small plasma membrane invaginations that can respond to plasma membrane stresses and serve mechanotransductive roles. Within this study, we investigated the role of caveolae as mechanosensors in the alveolus. We generated a human caveolin-1 knockout ATI cell (hAELVicav-/- ) using CRISPR/Cas9. Wildtype (hAELViwt ) and hAELVicav-/- cells grown on flexible membranes responded to increasing stretch amplitudes with rises in intracellular Ca2+ . The response was less frequent and started at higher stretch amplitudes in hAELVicav-/- cells. Stretch-induced Ca2+ -signals depended on Ca2+ -entry via piezo1 channels, localized within caveolae in hAELViwt and primary ATI cells. Ca2+ -entry via piezo1 activated pannexin-1 hemichannels resulting in ATP release from ATI cells. ATP release was reduced in hAELVicav-/- cells. In co-cultures resembling the alveolar epithelium, released ATP stimulated Ca2+ signals and surfactant secretion from neighboring ATII cells when co-cultured with hAELViwt but not hAELVicav-/- cells. In summary, we propose that caveolae in ATI cells are mechanosensors within alveoli regulating stretch-induced surfactant secretion from ATII cells.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the performance of computed tomography derived fractional flow reserve based interactive planner (FFRCT planner) to predict the physiological benefits of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) as defined by invasive post-PCI FFR. BACKGROUND: Advances in FFRCT technology have enabled the simulation of hyperemic pressure changes after virtual removal of stenoses. METHODS: In 56 patients (63 vessels) invasive FFR measurements before and after PCI were obtained and FFRCT was calculated using pre-PCI coronary CT angiography. Subsequently, FFRCT and invasive coronary angiography models were aligned allowing virtual removal of coronary stenoses on pre-PCI FFRCT models in the same locations as PCI was performed. Relationships between invasive FFR and FFRCT , between post-PCI FFR and FFRCT planner, and between delta FFR and delta FFRCT were evaluated. RESULTS: Pre PCI, invasive FFR was 0.65 ± 0.12 and FFRCT was 0.64 ± 0.13 (p = .34) with a mean difference of 0.015 (95% CI: -0.23-0.26). Post-PCI invasive FFR was 0.89 ± 0.07 and FFRCT planner was 0.85 ± 0.07 (p < .001) with a mean difference of 0.040 (95% CI: -0.10-0.18). Delta invasive FFR and delta FFRCT were 0.23 ± 0.12 and 0.21 ± 0.12 (p = .09) with a mean difference of 0.025 (95% CI: -0.20-0.25). Significant correlations were found between pre-PCI FFR and FFRCT (r = 0.53, p < .001), between post-PCI FFR and FFRCT planner (r = 0.41, p = .001), and between delta FFR and delta FFRCT (r = 0.57, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The non-invasive FFRCT planner tool demonstrated significant albeit modest agreement with post-PCI FFR and change in FFR values after PCI. The FFRCT planner tool may hold promise for PCI procedural planning; however, improvement in technology is warranted before clinical application.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated myocardial viability as well as global and regional functional recovery after successful chronic coronary total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using sequential quantitative cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. BACKGROUND: The patient benefits of CTO PCI are being questioned. METHODS: In a single high-volume CTO PCI center patients were prospectively scheduled for CMR at baseline and 3 months after successful CTO PCI between 2013 and 2018. Segmental wall thickening (SWT) and percentage late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) were quantitatively measured per segment. Viability was defined as dysfunctional myocardium (<2.84 mm SWT) with no or limited scar (≤50% LGE). RESULTS: A total of 132 patients were included. Improvement of left ventricular ejection fraction was modest after CTO PCI (from 48.1 ± 11.8 to 49.5 ± 12.1%, p < 0.01). CTO segments with viability (N = 216, [31%]) demonstrated a significantly higher increase in SWT (0.80 ± 1.39 mm) compared to CTO segments with pre-procedural preserved function (N = 456 [65%], 0.07 ± 1.43 mm, p < 0.01) or extensive scar (LGE >50%, N = 26 [4%], -0.08 ± 1.09 mm, p < 0.01). Patients with ≥2 CTO segments viability showed more SWT increase in the CTO territory compared to patients with 0-1 segment viability (0.49 ± 0.93 vs. 0.12 ± 0.98 mm, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Detection of dysfunctional myocardial segments without extensive scar (≤50% LGE) as a marker for viability on CMR aids in identifying patients with significant regional functional recovery after CTO PCI.

OBJECTIVES: Quantitative flow ratio (QFR) computes fractional flow reserve (FFR) based on invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Residual QFR estimates post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) FFR. This study sought to assess the relationship of residual QFR with post-PCI FFR. METHODS: Residual QFR analysis, using pre-PCI ICA, was attempted in 159 vessels with post-PCI FFR. QFR lesion location was matched with the PCI location to simulate the performed intervention and allow computation of residual QFR. A post-PCI FFR < 0.90 was used to define a suboptimal PCI result. RESULTS: Residual QFR computation was successful in 128 (81%) vessels. Median residual QFR was higher than post-PCI FFR (0.96 Q1-Q3: 0.91-0.99 vs. 0.91 Q1-Q3: 0.86-0.96, p < 0.001). A significant correlation and agreement were observed between residual QFR and post-PCI FFR (R = 0.56 and intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.47, p < 0.001 for both). Following PCI, an FFR < 0.90 was observed in 54 (42%) vessels. Specificity, positive predictive value, sensitivity, and negative predictive value of residual QFR for assessment of the PCI result were 96% (95% confidence interval (CI): 87-99%), 89% (95% CI: 72-96%), 44% (95% CI: 31-59%), and 70% (95% CI: 65-75%), respectively. Residual QFR had an accuracy of 74% (95% CI: 66-82%) and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.79 (95% CI: 0.71-0.86). CONCLUSIONS: A significant correlation and agreement between residual QFR and post-PCI FFR were observed. Residual QFR ≥ 0.90 did not necessarily commensurate with a satisfactory PCI (post-PCI FFR ≥ 0.90). In contrast, residual QFR exhibited a high specificity for prediction of a suboptimal PCI result.

RESUMEN

Although organic polariton condensation has been recently demonstrated, they only utilize the photon part of polaritons and ignore the excitonic contribution because the polariton-polariton and polariton-reservoir interactions are weak in organic microcavities owing to the absence of Coulomb exchange-interactions between Frenkel excitons. We demonstrate highly efficient and strongly polarization-dependent polariton condensates in a microcavity consisting of an H-aggregate organic single-crystalline microbelt sandwiched between two silver reflectors. Benefitting from the advantages of vibronic coupling in H-aggregates and heavy exciton-like polaritons, both macroscopic coherent polariton ground-state population and high-energy quantized-modes are observed. The measurements are qualitatively reproduced based on simulations of the spatiotemporal polariton dynamics. The observation of low threshold polariton lasing, the ease of fabrication, and the potential for efficient electronic charge injection make microcrystals of organic semiconductors attractive candidates for continuous wave and electrically pumped functional photonic polariton circuits and organic polariton lasers, operating at room temperature.

We demonstrate the formation and trapping of different stationary solutions, oscillatory solutions, and rotating solutions of a polariton condensate in a planar semiconductor microcavity with a built-in ring-shaped potential well. Multistable ring-shaped solutions are trapped in shallow potential wells. These solutions have the same ring-shaped density distribution but different topological charges, corresponding to different orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the emitted light. For stronger confinement potentials, besides the fundamental modes, higher excited (dipole) modes can also be trapped. If two modes are excited simultaneously, their beating produces a complex oscillation or rotation dynamics. When the two modes have the same OAM, a double-ring solution forms for which the density oscillates between the inner and the outer ring. When the two modes have different OAM, a rotating solution with fractional OAM is created.

We address topological currents in polariton condensates excited by uniform resonant pumps in finite honeycomb arrays of microcavity pillars with a hole in the center. Such currents arise under combined action of the spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting, which breaks the time-reversal symmetry and opens a topological gap in the spectrum of the structure. The most representative feature of this structure is the presence of two interfaces, inner and outer ones, where the directions of topological currents are opposite. Due to the finite size of the structure, polariton-polariton interactions lead to coupling of the edge states at the inner and outer interfaces, which depends on the size of the hollow region. Moreover, switching between currents can be realized by tuning the pump frequency. We illustrate that currents in this finite structure can be stable and study bistability effects arising due to the resonant character of the pump.
