Organophosphate ester flame retardants and plasticizers (OPEs) are common exposures in modern built environments. Toxicological models report that some OPEs reduce dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Deficiencies in these neurotransmitters are associated with anxiety and depression. We hypothesized that exposure to higher concentrations of OPEs in house dust would be associated with a greater risk of depression and stress in mothers across the prenatal and postpartum periods. We conducted a nested prospective cohort study using data collected on mothers (n = 718) in the CHILD Cohort Study, a longitudinal multi-city Canadian birth cohort (2008-2012). OPEs were measured in house dust sampled at 3-4 months postpartum. Maternal depression and stress were measured at 18 and 36 weeks gestation and 6 months and 1 year postpartum using the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies for Depression Scale (CES-D) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). We used linear mixed models to examine the association between a summed Z-Score OPE index and continuous depression and stress scores. In adjusted models, one standard deviation increase in the OPE Z-score index was associated with a 0.07-point (95% CI: 0.01, 0.13) increase in PSS score. OPEs were not associated with log-transformed CES-D (ß: 0.63%, 95% CI: -0.18%, 1.46%). The effect of OPEs on PSS score was strongest at 36 weeks gestation and weakest at 1 year postpartum. We observed small increases in maternal perceived stress levels, but not depression, with increasing OPEs measured in house dust during the prenatal and early postpartum period in this cohort of Canadian women. Given the prevalence of prenatal and postpartum anxiety and the ubiquity of OPE exposures, additional research is warranted to understand if these chemicals affect maternal mental health.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing evidence supports the role of early-life gut microbiota in developing atopic diseases, but ecological changes to gut microbiota during infancy in relation to food sensitization remain unclear. We aimed to characterize and associate these changes with the development of food sensitization in children. METHODS: In this observational study, using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, we characterized the composition of 2844 fecal microbiota in 1422 Canadian full-term infants. Atopic sensitization outcomes were measured by skin prick tests at age 1 year and 3 years. The association between gut microbiota trajectories, based on longitudinal shifts in community clusters, and atopic sensitization outcomes at age 1 and 3 years were determined. Ethnicity and early-life exposures influencing microbiota trajectories were initially examined, and post-hoc analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Four identified developmental trajectories of gut microbiota were shaped by birth mode and varied by ethnicity. The trajectory with persistently low Bacteroides abundance and high Enterobacteriaceae/Bacteroidaceae ratio throughout infancy increased the risk of sensitization to food allergens, particularly to peanuts at age 3 years by 3-fold (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 2.82, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13-7.01). A much higher likelihood for peanut sensitization was found if infants with this trajectory were born to Asian mothers (adjusted OR 7.87, 95% CI 2.75-22.55). It was characterized by a deficiency in sphingolipid metabolism and persistent Clostridioides difficile colonization. Importantly, this trajectory of depleted Bacteroides abundance mediated the association between Asian ethnicity and food sensitization. CONCLUSIONS: This study documented an association between persistently low gut Bacteroides abundance throughout infancy and sensitization to peanuts in childhood. It is the first to show a mediation role for infant gut microbiota in ethnicity-associated development of food sensitization.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Few studies, even those with cohort designs, test the mediating effects of infant gut microbes and metabolites on the onset of disease. We undertook such a study. METHODS: Using structural equation modeling path analysis, we tested directional relationships between first pregnancy, birth mode, prolonged labor and breastfeeding; infant gut microbiota, metabolites, and IgA; and childhood body mass index and atopy in 1667 infants. RESULTS: After both cesarean birth and prolonged labor with a first pregnancy, a higher Enterobacteriaceae/Bacteroidaceae ratio at 3 months was the dominant path to overweight; higher Enterobacteriaceae/Bacteroidaceae ratios and Clostridioides difficile colonization at 12 months were the main pathway to atopic sensitization. Depletion of Bifidobacterium after prolonged labor was a secondary pathway to overweight. Influenced by C difficile colonization at 3 months, metabolites propionate and formate were secondary pathways to child outcomes, with a key finding that formate was at the intersection of several paths. CONCLUSIONS: Pathways from cesarean section and first pregnancy to child overweight and atopy share many common mediators of the infant gut microbiome, notably C difficile colonization.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Differences in gut microbiota, metabolites and immune markers have been observed between individuals with and without obesity. Our study determined the temporal association between infant fecal gut metabolites, sIgA and body mass index (BMI) z score of preschool children, independent of pre/postnatal factors. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The study includes a subset of 647 infants from the CHILD Cohort Study (recruited between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2012). Fecal metabolites and sIgA were measured at 3-4 months of age, and age and sex adjusted BMI z scores at 1 and 3 years of age. Associations between the metabolites, IgA, and child BMI z scores at age 1 and 3 years were tested using linear regression adjusted for pre/postnatal factors (breastfeeding, birthweight-for-gestational age, birthmode and IAP, solid food introduction). RESULTS: Mean BMI z score for all infants was 0.34 (SD 1.16) at 1 year (N = 647) and 0.71 (SD 1.06) at 3 years (N = 573). High fecal formate in infancy was associated with a significantly lower BMI z score (adjusted mean difference -0.23 (95% CI -0.42, -0.04)) and high butyrate was associated with a higher BMI z score (adjusted mean difference 0.21 (95% CI 0.01, 0.41)) at age 3 years only. The influence of formate and butyrate on BMI z score at age 3 were seen only in those that were not exclusively breastfed at stool sample collection (adjusted mean difference for high formate/EBF- group: -0.33 (95%CI -0.55, -0.10) and 0.25 (95% CI 0.02, 0.47) for high butyrate/EBF- group). No associations were seen between sIgA and BMI z score at age 1 or 3 years in adjusted regression models. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: Differences in fecal metabolite levels in early infancy were associated with childhood BMI. This study identifies an important area of future research in understanding the pathogenesis of obesity.

Evidence suggests that human exposure to airborne particles and associated contaminants, including respiratory pathogens, can persist beyond a single microenvironment. By accumulating such contaminants from air, clothing may function as a transport vector and source of "secondary exposure". To investigate this function, a novel microenvironmental exposure modeling framework (ABICAM) was developed. This framework was applied to a para-occupational exposure scenario involving the deposition of viable SARS-CoV-2 in respiratory particles (0.5-20 µm) from a primary source onto clothing in a nonhealthcare setting and subsequent resuspension and secondary exposure in a car and home. Variability was assessed through Monte Carlo simulations. The total volume of infectious particles on the occupant's clothing immediately after work was 4800 µm3 (5th-95th percentiles: 870-32â¯000 µm3). This value was 61% (5-95%: 17-300%) of the occupant's primary inhalation exposure in the workplace while unmasked. By arrival at the occupant's home after a car commute, relatively rapid viral inactivation on cotton clothing had reduced the infectious volume on clothing by 80% (5-95%: 26-99%). Secondary inhalation exposure (after work) was low in the absence of close proximity and physical contact with contaminated clothing. In comparison, the average primary inhalation exposure in the workplace was higher by about 2-3 orders of magnitude. It remains theoretically possible that resuspension and physical contact with contaminated clothing can occasionally transmit SARS-CoV-2 between humans.

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VIII (segregated as Trichophyton indotineae) is a new strain of antifungal resistant Trichophyton spp. that has been found in different countries around the world. This new strain has been found to be resistant to terbinafine. OBJECTIVES: We present the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment approach of Canadian patients with mycology and molecular confirmation of superficial mycosis caused by T. indotineae. METHODS: Mycology testing from cultures and PCR were used to confirm T. indotineae. We collected clinical information from patients with a confirmed diagnosis. RESULTS: We report eight Canadian patients mainly presenting with extensive superficial mycosis due to T. indotineae. Three patients presented lesions on the face in addition to lesions on their body. Four patients were initially started on itraconazole or fluconazole, one patient was started on topical therapy, and three patients were referred to infectious disease. CONCLUSIONS: This new strain represents a dermatology and public health concern. Treatment guidelines are lacking. We include a practical approach and treatment recommendations for clinicians who will be encountering these emerging cases in Canada while waiting for evidence-based treatment guidelines.

AIMS: Activity in the amygdala, a brain centre involved in the perception of and response to stressors, associates with: (i) heightened sympathetic nervous system and inflammatory output and (ii) risk of cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that the amygdalar activity (AmygA) ratio is heightened among individuals who develop Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), a heart failure syndrome often triggered by acute stress. We tested the hypotheses that (i) heightened AmygA precedes development of TTS and (ii) those with the highest AmygA develop the syndrome earliest. METHODS AND RESULTS: Individuals (N=104, median age 67.5 years, 72% female, 86% with malignancy) who underwent clinical 18 F-FDG-PET/CT imaging were retrospectively identified: 41 who subsequently developed TTS and 63 matched controls (median follow-up 2.5 years after imaging). AmygA was measured using validated methods. Individuals with (vs. without) subsequent TTS had higher baseline AmygA (P=0.038) after adjusting for TTS risk factors. Further, AmygA associated with the risk for subsequent TTS after adjustment for risk factors [standardized hazard ratio (95% confidence interval): 1.643 (1.189, 2.270), P=0.003]. Among the subset of individuals who developed TTS, those with the highest AmygA (>mean + 1 SD) developed TTS â¼2 years earlier after imaging vs. those with lower AmygA (P=0.028). CONCLUSION: Higher AmygA associates with an increased risk for TTS among a retrospective population with a high rate of malignancy. This heightened neurobiological activity is present years before the onset of TTS and may impact the timing of the syndrome. Accordingly, heightened stress-associated neural activity may represent a therapeutic target to reduce stress-related diseases, including TTS.

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated an association between phthalate exposure and childhood asthma, although results have been inconsistent. No epidemiological studies have examined exposure during the first year of life. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between phthalate exposures in the home environment during the first year of life, and subsequent development of childhood asthma and related symptoms. METHODS: This study used a case-cohort design including 436 randomly selected children and all additional cases of asthma at 5 years (ntotal = 129) and recurrent wheeze between 2 and 5 years (ntotal = 332) within the CHILD Cohort Study, a general population Canadian birth cohort of 3455 children. Phthalate exposure was assessed using house dust samples collected during a standardized home visit when children were 3-4 months of age. All children were assessed by specialist clinicians for asthma and allergy at 1, 3 and 5 years. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between exposure to five phthalates and asthma diagnosis at 5 years, and recurrent wheeze between 2 and 5 years, with further stratification by wheeze subtypes (late onset, persistent, transient) based on the timing of onset and persistence of wheeze symptoms. RESULTS: Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) had the highest concentration in dust (mediansubcohort = 217 µg/g), followed by benzyl butyl phthalate (BzBP) (20 µg/g). A nearly four-fold increase in risk of developing asthma was associated with the highest concentration quartile of DEHP (OR = 3.92, 95% CI: 1.87-8.24) including a positive dose-response relationship. A two-fold increase in risk of recurrent wheeze was observed across all quartiles compared to the lowest quartile of DEHP concentrations. Compared to other wheeze subtypes, stronger associations for DEHP were observed with the late onset wheezing subtype, while stronger associations for di-iso-butyl phthalate (DiBP) and BzBP were observed with the transient subtype. DISCUSSION: DEHP exposure at 3-4 months, at concentrations lower than other studies that reported an association, were associated with increased risks of asthma and recurrent wheeze among children at 5 years. These findings suggest the need to assess whether more stringent regulations are required to protect children's health, which can be informed by future work exploring the main sources of DEHP exposure.

Fungi critically impact the health and function of global ecosystems and economies. In Canada, fungal researchers often work within silos defined by subdiscipline and institutional type, complicating the collaborations necessary to understand the impacts fungi have on the environment, economy, and plant and animal health. Here, we announce the establishment of the Canadian Fungal Research Network (CanFunNet, https://fungalresearch.ca), whose mission is to strengthen and promote fungal research in Canada by facilitating dialogue among scientists. We summarize the challenges and opportunities for Canadian fungal research that were discussed at CanFunNet's inaugural meeting in 2019, and identify 4 priorities for our community: (i) increasing collaboration among scientists, (ii) studying diversity in the context of ecological disturbance, (iii) preserving culture collections in the absence of sustained funding, and (iv) leveraging diverse expertise to attract trainees. We have gathered additional information to support our recommendations, including a survey identifying underrepresentation of fungal-related courses at Canadian universities, a list of Canadian fungaria and culture collections, and a case study of a human fungal pathogen outbreak. We anticipate that these discussions will help prioritize fungal research in Canada, and we welcome all researchers to join this nationwide effort to enhance knowledge dissemination and funding advocacy.

AIMS: Chronic noise exposure associates with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk; however, the role of confounders and the underlying mechanism remain incompletely defined. The amygdala, a limbic centre involved in stress perception, participates in the response to noise. Higher amygdalar metabolic activity (AmygA) associates with increased CVD risk through a mechanism involving heightened arterial inflammation (ArtI). Accordingly, in this retrospective study, we tested whether greater noise exposure associates with higher: (i) AmygA, (ii) ArtI, and (iii) risk for major adverse cardiovascular disease events (MACE). METHODS AND RESULTS: Adults (N = 498) without CVD or active cancer underwent clinical 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging. Amygdalar metabolic activity and ArtI were measured, and MACE within 5 years was adjudicated. Average 24-h transportation noise and potential confounders were estimated at each individual's home address. Over a median 4.06 years, 40 individuals experienced MACE. Higher noise exposure (per 5 dBA increase) predicted MACE [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval, CI) 1.341 (1.147-1.567), P < 0.001] and remained robust to multivariable adjustments. Higher noise exposure associated with increased AmygA [standardized ß (95% CI) 0.112 (0.051-0.174), P < 0.001] and ArtI [0.045 (0.001-0.090), P = 0.047]. Mediation analysis suggested that higher noise exposure associates with MACE via a serial mechanism involving heightened AmygA and ArtI that accounts for 12-26% of this relationship. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that noise exposure associates with MACE via a mechanism that begins with increased stress-associated limbic (amygdalar) activity and includes heightened arterial inflammation. This potential neurobiological mechanism linking noise to CVD merits further evaluation in a prospective population.

Quantitative PCR (qPCR), loop-mediated amplification (LAMP), and lateral flow strip-based recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA-LFS) assays were assessed for early detection of Phytophthora infestans, the global causal agent of potato and tomato late blight, on passive wind-powered spore traps known as Spornados. Spore traps were deployed in potato and tomato fields during the 2018, 2019, and 2020 growing seasons in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario. All assays used DNA extracts from Spornado cassette membranes targeting the P. infestans nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer. A total of 1,003 Spornado samples were qPCR tested, yielding 115 positive samples for P. infestans spores. In further assessment of these samples, LAMP detected P. infestans in 108 (93.9%) of 115 qPCR positive samples, and RPA-LFS detected it in 103 (89.6%). None of the assays showed cross-reaction with other Phytophthora species or pathogenic fungi known to infect potato and tomato. The qPCR detected ≤1 fg of P. infestans DNA, and LAMP and RPA-LFS amplified 10 fg in as little as 10 min. All assays detected P. infestans before the first report of late blight symptoms in commercial potato or tomato fields within each region or province. The combination of Spornado passive samplers with qPCR, LAMP, or RPA-LFS proved a valuable spore trapping system for early surveillance of late blight in potato and tomato. Both LAMP and RPA-LFS showed potential as alternative approaches to qPCR for in-field monitoring of P. infestans.

BACKGROUND: Maternal pre-postnatal psychosocial distress increases the risk for childhood allergic disease. This may occur through a host immunity pathway that involves intestinal secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA). Experimental animal models show changes in the gut microbiome and immunity of offspring when exposed to direct or prenatal maternal stress, but little is known in humans. OBJECTIVE: We determined the association between maternal depression and stress symptom trajectories and infant fecal sIgA concentrations. METHODS: 1043 term infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort were studied. Trajectories of maternal perceived stress and depression were based on scored scales administered in pregnancy and postpartum. sIgA was quantified in infant stool (mean age 3.7 months) with Immundiagnostik ELISA. Linear regression and logistic regression were employed to test associations. RESULTS: Very low fecal sIgA concentrations were more common in infants of mothers in the antepartum and persistent depression trajectories (6% and 2% of women, respectively). Independent of breastfeeding status at fecal sampling, infant antibiotic exposure or other covariates, the antepartum depressive symptom trajectory was associated with reduced mean infant sIgA concentrations (ß=-0.07, P < .01) and a two fold risk for lowest quartile concentrations (OR, 1.86; 95% CI: 1.02, 3.40). This lowering of sIgA yielded a large effect size in older infants (4-8 months)-breastfed and not. No associations were seen with postpartum depressive symptoms (7% of women) or with any of the perceived stress trajectories. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Despite improved mood postpartum and independent of breastfeeding status, mothers experiencing antepartum depressive symptoms delivered offspring who exhibited lower fecal sIgA concentrations especially in later infancy. The implications of lowered sIgA concentrations in infant stool are altered microbe-sIgA interactions, greater risk for C difficile colonization and atopic disease in later years.

OBJECTIVE. We reviewed a retrospective series of 126 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT studies of patients with biochemically recurrent prostate cancer at low (< 1 ng/mL) and very low (< 0.3 ng/mL) prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. CONCLUSION. The rate of PET/CT positivity was 33% (15/46) in patients with low PSA levels and 0% (0/17) in patients with very low PSA levels. Our results suggest that 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT can be helpful for localizing recurrence in patients with PSA levels between 0.3 and 1 ng/mL and that 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT is not recommended in patients with PSA levels less than 0.3 ng/mL.

Secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) plays a critical role to infant gut mucosal immunity. Delayed IgA production is associated with greater risk of allergic disease. Murine models of stressful events during pregnancy and infancy show alterations in gut immunity and microbial composition in offspring, but little is known about the stress-microbiome-immunity pathways in humans. We investigated differences in infant fecal sIgA concentrations according to the presence of maternal depressive symptoms during and after pregnancy. A subsample of 403 term infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) cohort were studied. Their mothers completed the Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale when enrolled prenatally and again postpartum. Quantified by Immundiagnostik sIgA ELISA kit, sIgA from infant stool was compared across maternal depressive symptom categories using Mann-Whitney U-tests and logistic regression models that controlled for various covariates. Twelve percent of women reported clinically significant depressive symptoms only prenatally, 8.7% had only postpartum symptoms and 9.2% had symptoms both pre and postnatally. Infants born to mothers with pre and postnatal symptoms had significantly lower median sIgA concentrations than those in the reference group (4.4â¯mg/g feces vs. 6.3â¯mg/g feces; pâ¯=â¯0.033). The odds for sIgA concentrations in the lowest quartile was threefold higher (95% CI: 1.25-7.55) when mothers had pre and postnatal symptoms, after controlling for breastfeeding status, infant age, antibiotics exposure and other covariates. Postnatal symptoms were not associated with fecal sIgA, independently of breastfeeding status. Infants born to mothers with depressive symptoms appear to have lower fecal sIgA concentrations, predisposing them to higher risk for allergic disease.

BACKGROUND: Emerging links between household cleaning products and childhood overweight may involve the gut microbiome. We determined mediating effects of infant gut microbiota on associations between home use of cleaning products and future overweight. METHODS: From the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort, we tested associations between maternal report of cleaning product use and overweight at age 3, and whether associations were mediated by microbial profiles of fecal samples in 3- to 4-month-old infants. RESULTS: Among 757 infants, the abundance of specific gut microbiota was associated with household cleaning with disinfectants and eco-friendly products in a dose-dependent manner. With more frequent use of disinfectants, Lachnospiraceae increasingly became more abundant (highest v. lowest quintile of use: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.93, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08 to 3.45) while genus Haemophilus declined in abundance (highest v. lowest quintile of use: AOR 0.36, 95% CI 0.20 to 0.65). Enterobacteriaceae were successively depleted with greater use of eco-friendly products (AOR 0.45, 95% CI 0.27 to 0.74). Lachnospiraceae abundance significantly mediated associations of the top 30th centile of household disinfectant use with higher body mass index (BMI) z score (p = 0.02) and with increased odds of overweight or obesity (p = 0.04) at age 3. Use of eco-friendly products was associated with decreased odds of overweight or obesity independently of Enterobacteriaceae abundance (AOR 0.44, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.86), with no significant mediation (p = 0.2). INTERPRETATION: Exposure to household disinfectants was associated with higher BMI at age 3, mediated by gut microbial composition at age 3-4 months. Although child overweight was less common in households that cleaned with eco-friendly products, the lack of mediation by infant gut microbiota suggests another pathway for this association.

OBJECTIVE: We reviewed the safety of nuclear diuretic renography with furosemide in patients with sulfonamide allergies. The electronic health record was used to uncover any drug effects reported within 30 days of diuretic renograms performed between January 2009 and December 2015. CONCLUSION: Eighty-three of 1103 (7.5%) diuretic renograms were performed on patients with sulfonamide allergies. Two instances of minor rash occurred. No serious reactions occurred. Furosemide is associated with an extremely low risk of minor reactions in patients with sulfonamide allergies.

Asthma during pregnancy is associated with retardation of fetal growth in a sex-specific manner. Lactobacilli microbes influence infant growth. This study aimed to determine whether lactobacilli and other microbes are reduced in the gut of infants born to an asthmatic mother, and whether this differs by the sex of the infant.Mother-infant pairs (N=1021) from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development full-term cohort were studied. The abundance of infant faecal microbiota at 3-4â months, profiled by gene sequencing, was compared between both women with and without asthma treatment during pregnancy. Infant sex, maternal ethnicity, pre-pregnancy overweight and atopy status, birth mode, breastfeeding status and intrapartum antibiotic treatment were tested as covariates.Independent of birth mode and other covariates, male, Caucasian infants born to women with prenatal asthma harboured fewer lactobacilli in the gut at 3-4â months of age. If asthmatic mothers had pre-pregnancy overweight, the abundance of Lactobacillus in males was further reduced in the infant gut, whereas the microbiota of female infants was enriched with Bacteroidaceae Similar differences in infant gut microbial composition according to maternal prenatal asthma status were also more evident among women with food or environmental allergies.Gut lactobacilli were less abundant in male infants, but Bacteroidaceae were more abundant in female infants at 3-4â months of age, following maternal asthma during pregnancy.

A 77-year-old man was admitted to this hospital because of confusion and malaise after resection of a papillary urothelial cancer. He reported abdominal pain, facial and jaw pain, anorexia, lethargy, weakness, and night sweats; imaging revealed generalized lymphadenopathy.

Archaea are widespread and abundant in soils, oceans, or human and animal gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. However, very little is known about the presence of Archaea in indoor environments and factors that can regulate their abundances. Using a quantitative PCR approach, and targeting the archaeal and bacterial 16S rRNA genes in floor dust samples, we found that Archaea are a common part of the indoor microbiota, 5.01 ± 0.14 (log 16S rRNA gene copies/g dust, mean ± SE) in bedrooms and 5.58 ± 0.13 in common rooms, such as living rooms. Their abundance, however, was lower than bacteria: 9.20 ± 0.32 and 9.17 ± 0.32 in bedrooms and common rooms, respectively. In addition, by measuring a broad array of environmental factors, we obtained preliminary insights into how the abundance of total archaeal 16S rRNA gene copies in indoor environment would be associated with building characteristics and occupants' activities. Based on the results, Archaea are not equally distributed within houses, and the areas with greater input of outdoor microbiome and higher traffic and material heterogeneity tend to have a higher abundance of Archaea. Nevertheless, more research is needed to better understand causes and consequences of this microbial group in indoor environments.
