The high energy demand of the evolving world opens the door to develop more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a promising candidate, being the 2e- pathway of great interest for the green production of hydrogen peroxide. Metal-free covalent organic frameworks (COFs) electrocatalysts present a suitable alternative to substitute the noble-metals more commonly employed in this application. However, the lability of the linkages building up the framework raises an issue for their long-term use and application in aggressive media. Herein, a stable amide-linked COF is reported through post-synthetic modification of a previously reported imine-linked COF proven to be effective as an electrocatalyst, enhancing its chemical stability and electrochemical response. It is found that after the linkage transformation, the new electrocatalyst displays a higher selectivity toward the H2O2 production (98.5%) and an enhanced turnover frequency of 0.155 s-1, which is among the bests reported to date for metal-free and COF based electrocatalysts. The results represent a promising step forward for metal-free non pyrolyzed electrocatalysts, improving their properties through post-synthetic linkage modification for long-term operation.

A new quinoline-based COF (covalent organic framework), obtained by Povarov reaction, containing 2,6-diisopropylphenyl moieties as substituents over the heterocyclic ring is described for detecting Zn2+ in aqueous solution. The introduction of the mentioned bulky phenyl rings into the network favors an increase of the distance between the reticular sheets and their arrangement, obtaining a new material with an alternating AB type stacking. The new material exhibits good selectivity to detect Zn2+ by fluorescence emission in aqueous solutions up to a concentration of 1.2 × 10-4 m of the metal ion. In order to have a deeper insight into the interaction between the COF and the zinc cation, a thorough spectroscopical, microscopical, and theoretical study is also presented and discussed in this communication.

The estimation of auditory evoked potentials requires deconvolution when the duration of the responses to be recovered exceeds the inter-stimulus interval. Based on least squares deconvolution, in this article we extend the procedure to the case of a multi-response convolutional model, that is, a model in which different categories of stimulus are expected to evoke different responses. The computational cost of the multi-response deconvolution significantly increases with the number of responses to be deconvolved, which restricts its applicability in practical situations. In order to alleviate this restriction, we propose to perform the multi-response deconvolution in a reduced representation space associated with a latency-dependent filtering of auditory responses, which provides a significant dimensionality reduction. We demonstrate the practical viability of the multi-response deconvolution with auditory responses evoked by clicks presented at different levels and categorized according to their stimulation level. The multi-response deconvolution applied in a reduced representation space provides the least squares estimation of the responses with a reasonable computational load. matlab/Octave code implementing the proposed procedure is included as supplementary material.

A new family of molecules obtained by coupling Tröger's base unit with dicyanovinylene-terminated oligothiophenes of different lengths has been synthesized and characterized by steady-state stationary and transient time-resolved spectroscopies. Quantum chemical calculations allow us to interpret and recognize the properties of the stationary excited states as well as the time-dependent mechanisms of singlet-to-triplet coupling. The presence of the diazocine unit in Tröger's base derivatives is key to efficiently producing singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing mediated by the role of the nitrogen atoms and of the almost orthogonal disposition of the two thiophene arms. Spin-orbit coupling-mediated interstate intersystem crossing (ISC) is activated by a symmetry-breaking process in the first singlet excited state with partial charge transfer character. This mechanism is a characteristic of these molecular triads since the independent dicyanovinylene-oligothiophene branches do not display appreciable ISC. These results show how Tröger's base coupling of organic chromophores can be used to improve the ISC efficiency and tune their photophysics.

BACKGROUND: Controlled donation after circulatory determination of death (cDCD) seems an effective way to mitigate the critical shortage of available organs for transplant worldwide. As a recently developed procedure for organ retrieval, some questions remain unsolved such as the uncertainty regarding the effect of functional warm ischemia time (FWIT) on organs´ viability. METHODS: We developed a multicenter prospective cohort study collecting all data from evaluated organs during cDCD from 2017 to 2020. All the procedures related to cDCD were performed with normothermic regional perfusion. The analysis included organ retrieval as endpoint and FWIT as exposure of interest. The effect of FWIT on the likelihood for organ retrieval was evaluated with Relative distribution analysis. RESULTS: A total amount of 507 organs´ related information was analyzed from 95 organ donors. Median donor age was 62 years, and 63% of donors were male. Stroke was the most common diagnosis before withdrawal of life-sustaining therapy (61%), followed by anoxic encephalopathy (21%). This analysis showed that length of FWIT was inversely associated with organ retrieval rates for liver, kidneys, and pancreas. No statistically significant association was found for lungs. CONCLUSIONS: Results showed an inverse association between functional warm ischemia time (FWIT) and retrieval rate. We also have postulated optimal FWIT's thresholds for organ retrieval. FWIT for liver retrieval remained between 6 and less than 11 min and in case of kidneys and pancreas, the optimal FWIT for retrieval was 6 to 12 min. These results could be valuable to improve organ utilization and for future analysis.

In this study, we present a novel approach for the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that overcomes the common limitations of non-scalable solvothermal procedures. Our method allows for the room-temperature and scalable synthesis of a highly fluorinated DFTAPB-TFTA-COF, which exhibits intrinsic hydrophobicity. We used DFT-based calculations to elucidate the role of the fluorine atoms in enhancing the crystallinity of the material through corrugation effects, resulting in maximized interlayer interactions, as disclosed both from PXRD structural resolution and theoretical simulations. We further investigated the electrocatalytic properties of this material towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Our results show that the fluorinated COF produces hydrogen peroxide selectively with low overpotential (0.062 V) and high turnover frequency (0.0757 s-1 ) without the addition of any conductive additives. These values are among the best reported for non-pyrolyzed and metal-free electrocatalysts. Finally, we employed DFT-based calculations to analyse the reaction mechanism, highlighting the crucial role of the fluorine atom in the active site assembly. Our findings shed light on the potential of fluorinated COFs as promising electrocatalysts for the ORR, as well as their potential applications in other fields.

An international consortium with a focus on Epilepsy Surgery Education was established with members from different centers in Latin America and Canada. All members of the consortium and attendees from different centers in Latin America and Canada have been meeting to discuss epilepsy surgery cases in a virtual manner. We surveyed all to assess the value of the meetings. The results and description of these meetings are being presented.

Auditory evoked potentials can be estimated by synchronous averaging when the responses to the individual stimuli are not overlapped. However, when the response duration exceeds the inter-stimulus interval, a deconvolution procedure is necessary to obtain the transient response. The iterative randomized stimulation and averaging and the equivalent randomized stimulation with least squares deconvolution have been proven to be flexible and efficient methods for deconvolving the evoked potentials, with minimum restrictions in the design of stimulation sequences. Recently, a latency-dependent filtering and down-sampling (LDFDS) methodology was proposed for optimal filtering and dimensionality reduction, which is particularly useful when the evoked potentials involve the complete auditory pathway response (i.e., from the cochlea to the auditory cortex). In this case, the number of samples required to accurately represent the evoked potentials can be reduced from several thousand (with conventional sampling) to around 120. In this article, we propose to perform the deconvolution in the reduced representation space defined by LDFDS and present the mathematical foundation of the subspace-constrained deconvolution. Under the assumption that the evoked response is appropriately represented in the reduced representation space, the proposed deconvolution provides an optimal least squares estimation of the evoked response. Additionally, the dimensionality reduction provides a substantial reduction of the computational cost associated with the deconvolution. matlab/Octave code implementing the proposed procedures is included as supplementary material.

RESUMEN

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are defined as crystalline organic polymers with programmable topological architectures using properly predesigned building blocks precursors. Since the development of the first COF in 2005, many works are emerging using this kind of material for different applications, such as the development of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. COF shows superb characteristics, such as tuneable pore size and structure, permanent porosity, high surface area, thermal stability, and low density. Apart from these special properties, COF's electrochemical behaviour can be modulated using electroactive building blocks. Furthermore, the great variety of functional groups that can be inserted in their structures makes them interesting materials to be conjugated with biological recognition elements, such as antibodies, enzymes, DNA probe, aptamer, etc. Moreover, the possibility of linking them with other special nanomaterials opens a wide range of possibilities to develop new electrochemical sensors and biosensors.

The neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) affects the spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebral cortex. In this pathology, both neurons and glial cells are affected. However, few studies have analyzed retinal microglia in ALS models. In this study, we quantified the signs of microglial activation and the number of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in an SOD1G93A transgenic mouse model at 120 days (advanced stage of the disease) in retinal whole-mounts. For SOD1G93A animals (compared to the wild-type), we found, in microglial cells, (i) a significant increase in the area occupied by each microglial cell in the total area of the retina; (ii) a significant increase in the arbor area in the outer plexiform layer (OPL) inferior sector; (iii) the presence of cells with retracted processes; (iv) areas of cell groupings in some sectors; (v) no significant increase in the number of microglial cells; (vi) the expression of IFN-γ and IL-1ß; and (vii) the non-expression of IL-10 and arginase-I. For the RGCs, we found a decrease in their number. In conclusion, in the SOD1G93A model (at 120 days), retinal microglial activation occurred, taking a pro-inflammatory phenotype M1, which affected the OPL and inner retinal layers and could be related to RGC loss.

BACKGROUND: Olive-derived antioxidants have been shown to affect the oxidative status of meat and have also been associated with greater consumption of glucose, which might affect glycogen stores and muscle characteristics. This study evaluated the effect of oleuropein extract supplementation (OLE) versus vitamin E + Se (VE), and their combination (VEOLE), in pig diets, on pH, drip loss, the proportion of free fatty acids, and meat stability, and their prediction by blood oxidative status markers. RESULTS: The drip loss of muscle was lower in antioxidant-supplemented groups when compared with controls. α-Tocopherol concentration and total fatty acids profile were not affected by dietary oleuropein supplementation. However, OLE and VEOLE had lower free n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels when compared with VE and tended to have higher free monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) levels. Furthermore, the VEOLE group had lower free n-6 PUFA levels when compared with controls or VE, whereas the OLE group had intermediated values. Muscle samples from pigs subjected to the antioxidant-mixed supplementation (VEOLE) had lower malondialdehyde concentration when compared with the others. The VE and OLE groups showed intermediate malondialdehyde values. Chilled meat stability was highly correlated with antioxidant status in vivo. CONCLUSION: The administration of 96 mg oleuropein kg-1 feed produced similar meat quality characteristics as the use of 100 mg kg-1 α-tocopheryl acetate +0.26 mg kg-1 sodium selenite and it would be an interesting alternative in Mediterranean countries. The VEOLE group was the most effective for reducing lipid oxidation and for the production of polyunsaturated free fatty acids in meat, which would result in lower rancidity formation and better aroma development in products. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

MECP2 duplication syndrome (MDS) is an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a severe to profound intellectual disability, early onset hypotonia and diverse psycho-motor and behavioural features. To date, fewer than 200 cases have been published. We report the clinical and molecular characterization of a Spanish MDS cohort that included 19 boys and 2 girls. Clinical suspicions were confirmed by array comparative genomic hybridization and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). Using, a custom in-house MLPA assay, we performed a thorough study of the minimal duplicated region, from which we concluded a complete duplication of both MECP2 and IRAK1 was necessary for a correct MDS diagnosis, as patients with partial MECP2 duplications lacked some typical clinical traits present in other MDS patients. In addition, the duplication location may be related to phenotypic severity. This observation may provide a new approach for genotype-phenotype correlations, and thus more personalized genetic counselling.

RESUMEN

The copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction is among the most extensively used strategies for the post-polymerization modification of COFs. This work shows a new procedure for the postsynthetic functionalization of imine-based COFs by using a heterogeneous solid-gas reaction between alkyne-functionalized COFs and azides in the absence of a copper catalyst. This new alternative represents a step forward towards a greener postsynthetic modification of COFs opening a high potential for the development of new applications.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the incidence of permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) with the CoreValve and Evolut R prostheses, to evaluate the implantation depth with both types of prostheses, and to study factors predicting the need for PPI. BACKGROUND: The Evolut R CoreValve can be recaptured and repositioned during deployment, allowing a more precise implantation. METHODS: A total of 208 patients treated with CoreValve and 137 patients treated with Evolut R were analyzed. The depth of the prosthesis in the LVOT was measured by angiography in the annular perpendicular view projection after deploymen in all patients. RESULTS: Baseline conduction abnormalities were comparable between the groups (85/208, 40.9% vs. 53/137, 38.7%; p = 0.69). The mean prosthesis depth was 10.3 ± 8.6 mm in the CoreValve group and 5.5 ± 2.7 mm in the Evolut R group; p < 0.0001. Conduction disturbances after valve implantation were more frequent with the CoreValve (new-onset left bundle branch block: 93, 44.7% vs. 16, 11.7%; p < 0.05, first-degree atrioventricular block: 23, 11.1% vs. 5, 3.6%; p < 0.05). In addition, the incidence of PPI was significantly lower with Evolut R (45, 21.6% vs. 15, 10.9%; p = 0.01). The predictors of the need for PPI were the mean depth of the prosthesis (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.06-1.21; p < 0.0001) and prior right bundle branch block (OR 10.22, 95% CI: 4.62-22.63; p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The recapturable capability of the Evolut R system allowed for higher and precise valve implantation. This fact had an impact on the reduction in the need for PPI.

Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) include the auditory brainstem response (ABR), middle latency response (MLR), and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs), each one covering a specific latency range and frequency band. For this reason, ABR, MLR, and CAEP are usually recorded separately using different protocols. This article proposes a procedure providing a latency-dependent filtering and down-sampling of the AEP responses. This way, each AEP component is appropriately filtered, according to its latency, and the complete auditory pathway response is conveniently represented (with the minimum number of samples, i.e., without unnecessary redundancies). The compact representation of the complete response facilitates a comprehensive analysis of the evoked potentials (keeping the natural continuity related to the neural activity transmission along the auditory pathway), which provides a new perspective in the design and analysis of AEP experiments. Additionally, the proposed compact representation reduces the storage or transmission requirements when large databases are manipulated for clinical or research purposes. The analysis of the AEP responses shows that a compact representation with 40 samples/decade (around 120 samples) is enough for accurately representing the response of the complete auditory pathway and provides appropriate latency-dependent filtering. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are organic porous materials with many potential applications, which very often depend on the presence of chemical functionality at the organic building blocks. Functionality that cannot be introduced into COFs directly via de novo syntheses can be accessed through post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategies. Current strategies for the post-synthetic modification of COFs involve (i) incorporation of a variety of active metal species by using metal complexation through coordination chemistry, (ii) covalent bond formation between existing pendant groups and incoming constituents and (iii) chemical conversion of linkages. (iv) The post-synthetic modification is sometimes assisted by a monomer truncation strategy for the internal functionalization of COFs. (v) Even more intriguing methods that go beyond PSM are herein termed building block exchange (BBE) which encompasses framework-to-framework transformations taking advantage of the fact that reversible bond formation is a characteristic feature of COFs. This strategy allows the use of protoCOF structures (i.e., the utilization of a parent COF as a template) for the evolution of new COF structures with completely new components.

Phase-resolved luminescence chemical sensors provide the analyte determination based on the estimation of the luminescence lifetime. The lifetime is estimated from an analysis of the amplitudes and/or phases of the excitation and emission signals at one or several modulation frequencies. This requires recording both the excitation signal (used to modulate the light source) and the emission signal (obtained from an optical transducer illuminated by the luminescent sensing phase). The excitation signal is conventionally used as reference, in order to obtain the modulation factor (the ratio between the emission and the excitation amplitudes) and/or the phase shift (the difference between the emission and the excitation phases) at each modulation frequency, which are used to estimate the luminescence lifetime. In this manuscript, we propose a new method providing the luminescence lifetimes (based either on amplitudes or phases) using only the emission signal (i.e., omitting the excitation signal in the procedure). We demonstrate that the luminescence lifetime can be derived from the emission signal when it contains at least two harmonics, because in this case the amplitude and phase of one of the harmonics can be used as reference. We present the theoretical formulation as well as an example of application to an oxygen measuring system. The proposed self-referenced lifetime estimation provides two practical advantages for luminescence chemical sensors. On one hand, it simplifies the instrument architecture, since only one analog-to-digital converter (for the emission signal) is necessary. On the other hand, the self-referenced estimation of the lifetime improves the robustness against degradation of the sensing phase or variations in the optical coupling, which reduces the recalibration requirements when the lifetimes are based on amplitudes.

In this work, we propose a new model describing the relationship between the analyte concentration and the instrument response in photoluminescence sensors excited with modulated light sources. The concentration is modeled as a polynomial function of the analytical signal corrected with an exponent, and therefore the model is referred to as a polynomial-exponent (PE) model. The proposed approach is motivated by the limitations of the classical models for describing the frequency response of the luminescence sensors excited with a modulated light source, and can be considered as an extension of the Stern-Volmer model. We compare the calibration provided by the proposed PE-model with that provided by the classical Stern-Volmer, Lehrer, and Demas models. Compared with the classical models, for a similar complexity (i.e., with the same number of parameters to be fitted), the PE-model improves the trade-off between the accuracy and the complexity. The utility of the proposed model is supported with experiments involving two oxygen-sensitive photoluminescence sensors in instruments based on sinusoidally modulated light sources, using four different analytical signals (phase-shift, amplitude, and the corresponding lifetimes estimated from them).

Lithium-sulfur batteries stands out as a promising technology for energy storage owing to a combination of favorable characteristics including a high theoretical gravimetric capacity, energy density, inexpensive character, and environmental benignity. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a rapidly developing family of functional nanostructures which combine porosity and crystallinity, and which have been already used in these kinds of batteries to build sulfur electrodes, by embedding sulfur into porous COFs in order to enhance cycle lifetimes. In this contribution, this is taken one step forward and a COF endowed with vinyl groups is used, in order to graft sulfur to the COF skeleton through inverse vulcanization. The main aim of the article is to show the synergistic effect of covalent bonding and physical encapsulation of sulfur in the pores of the COF in order to alleviate the fatal redox shuttling process, to improve the cycling performance, and to provide faster ion diffusion pathways. In addition, it is shown how the material with covalently-bound S provides better electrochemical performance under demanding and/or changeable charge conditions than a parent analogue material with sulfur physically confined, but without covalent linkage.

The iterative randomized stimulation and averaging (IRSA) method was proposed for recording evoked potentials when the individual responses are overlapped. The main inconvenience of IRSA is its computational cost, associated with a large number of iterations required for recovering the evoked potentials and the computation required for each iteration [involving the whole electroencephalogram (EEG)]. This article proposes a matrix-based formulation of IRSA, which is mathematically equivalent and saves computational load (because each iteration involves just a segment with the length of the response, instead of the whole EEG). Additionally, it presents an analysis of convergence that demonstrates that IRSA converges to the least-squares (LS) deconvolution. Based on the convergence analysis, some optimizations for the IRSA algorithm are proposed. Experimental results (configured for obtaining the full-range auditory evoked potentials) show the mathematical equivalence of the different IRSA implementations and the LS-deconvolution and compare the respective computational costs of these implementations under different conditions. The proposed optimizations allow the practical use of IRSA for many clinical and research applications and provide a reduction of the computational cost, very important with respect to the conventional IRSA, and moderate with respect to the LS-deconvolution. matlab/Octave implementations of the different methods are provided as supplementary material.
