Strategies and interventions used to provide communication education for midwifery students. A scoping review.

AIM: To examine the current literature on educational strategies and interventions developed with the objective of teaching or enhancing communication skills of student midwives during their pre-registration education programmes. DESIGN: A scoping review based on the Joanna Briggs Institute framework was conducted using predefined criteria and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) Checklist. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted using various databases (Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), EMBASE, PsycINFO, Maternity and Infant Care Database (MIDIRS), Web of Science and Education Resources Information Centre (ERIC)) in October 2023. RESULTS: A total of 120 titles and abstracts were screened. A final number of eight articles were subjected to quality appraisal and included in the scoping review. Five themes were identified which describe educational strategies and interventions including: simulation-based training, the use of role-play, pedagogical approaches, theory-based information workshops and debrief and reflection. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights a gap in research focusing on the importance of communication skills training for student midwives throughout midwifery education. Despite the limited numbers of studies, different interventions and educational strategies have been recognized for enhancing these skills. To equip midwives with strong communication skills, a combination of interventions is recommended, including communication-focused workshops tailored for midwifery education and debriefing and student reflection sessions specifically designed to enhanced communication skills. Parents' Assessment of an Advanced-Practice Nurse and Care Coordination Assistant Model Medical Care Coordination Program for Children With Medical Complexity.

INTRODUCTION: Care for many children with medical complexity (CMC) is fragmented, leading to increased family dissatisfaction and stress. We evaluated the impact of an Advanced-Practice Nurse and Care Coordination Assistant model medical care coordination program (MCCP) for CMC at an urban tertiary pediatric hospital on caregivers' perceptions of several health care indicators. METHOD: A retrospective pre-post survey was administered to parents of CMC enrolled in an MCCP for a minimum of 6 months. Questions were grouped into four domains: quality of life, caregiver satisfaction, care coordination, and caregiver self-efficacy. Mean scores of questions in each domain were compared from before program enrollment with those at the time of survey completion, using paired sample t tests. RESULT: There was an increase in the mean score in all four domains. DISCUSSION: Parents of CMC experience an Advanced-Practice Nurse and Care Coordination Assistant model MCCP to be effective in improving the navigation of and satisfaction with their child's health care environment.

Roads, Development, and Conservation in the Congo Basin.

Road density is closely linked to market accessibility, economic growth, natural resource exploitation, habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and the disappearance of wildlands and wildlife. Research in the Republic of Congo shows that roads established and maintained by logging concessions intensify bushmeat hunting by providing hunters greater access to relatively unexploited populations of forest wildlife and by lowering hunters' costs to transport bushmeat to market. Reconciling the contrary effects of roads on economic development and biodiversity conservation is one of the key challenges to wildlife managers in all nations. As the Democratic Republic of Congo prepares to reconstruct its almost completely collapsed road system, the government, donors, and conservation organizations have a unique opportunity to strategically prioritize investment in segments of the network that would maximize local and national economic benefits while minimizing adverse effects on forest wildlife.

RESUMEN: La densidad de carreteras está estrechamente ligada al acceso a mercados, el crecimiento económico, la explotación de recursos naturales, la fragmentación del hábitat, la deforestación y la desaparición de tierras y vida silvestre. Investigación en la República del Congo muestra que las carreteras establecidas y mantenidas por las concesiones para tala de árboles intensifican la cacería al proveer a los cazadores un mayor acceso a poblaciones forestales de vida silvestre relativamente sin explotar y al disminuir el costo de transporte de la carne obtenida por la caza hacia el mercado. La reconciliación de los efectos contrarios de las carreteras en el desarrollo económico y la conservación de la biodiversidad es uno de los retos clave para los manejadores de vida silvestre en todas las naciones. A medida que la República Democrática del Congo se prepara para reconstruir su casi completamente colapsado sistema carretero, el gobierno, los donadores y las organizaciones no gubernamentales conservacionistas tienen una oportunidad única para priorizar estratégicamente las inversiones en segmentos de la red carretera que podrían maximizar los beneficios económicos locales y nacionales al mismo tiempo que se minimicen los impactos adversos sobre la vida silvestre forestal.
