AIM: Reduced responses to controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) after radical trachelectomy (RT) have been previously reported. We aimed to assess the effect of RT on ovarian reserve by measuring anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels before and after the procedure in this prospective study. METHODS: We included 12 patients who underwent RT between September 2019 and December 2021 in this study. Serum AMH levels were measured preoperatively, 1 month postoperatively, and 6 months postoperatively. Differences in the AMH levels were assessed using a paired t-test. RESULTS: The median age of the patients was 30.6 years, and the median follow-up time was 30.1 months. AMH levels at 1 and 6 months postoperatively did not show a consistent trend. At 1 month postoperatively, the average AMH level decreased insignificantly but returned to preoperative levels at 6 months. The differences in AMH levels before and after RT were insignificant. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that RT did not affect ovarian reserve as measured by AMH levels. However, the relationship between unchanged ovarian reserve and reduced response to COS remains unclear. Further research with larger sample sizes and additional measures of ovarian function is needed to corroborate these results and investigate the long-term effects of RT on ovarian reserve. Understanding these mechanisms will help guide surgical practices and provide patients with valuable information about their reproductive outcomes after RT.

AIMS: To investigate the oncologic and obstetric outcomes of radical trachelectomy (RT) in patients with early-stage cervical cancer and to evaluate the potential role of fertility-preserving treatments in improving pregnancy outcomes while oncologic status is stable. METHODS: In this single-institution study, we analyzed the oncologic and obstetric outcomes of 67 patients with early-stage cervical cancer who underwent RT at Nagoya University Hospital. RESULTS: The cancer recurrence rate (6.0%) and the mortality rate (1.5%) were comparable with those of previous studies. Of the 46 patients who attempted to conceive after RT, 19 (41.3%) became pregnant, and 16 gave birth. Of these 37.5% delivered at term, and delivery at less than 28 weeks of gestation occurred in 31.3% of pregnancies. CONCLUSIONS: RT is a viable treatment option for selected patients with early-stage cervical cancer. However, the use of less invasive techniques, such as conization/simple trachelectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection, may improve pregnancy outcomes while oncologic status is stable.

BACKGROUND: Laser hair removal (LHR) is one of the most requested cosmetic procedures worldwide. A rare side effect is the appearance of excess hair around previously treated areas, known as paradoxical hypertrichosis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to retrospectively identify the cause of this side effect. METHODS: This study included all patients who underwent LHR at our center between November 2018 and November 2020. Alexandrite laser hair removal (HR) or diode laser super hair removal (SHR) was performed in 70% and 30% of cases, respectively. Clinical features and daily habits of patients with and without postlaser hypertrichosis were compared. RESULTS: Of the 7381 patients who received LHR, 25 patients (0.34%) demonstrated an increase in hair growth compared to baseline. Of these 25 patients, 24 had been treated with alexandrite laser HR (P < .01). The most common site was the upper arm, followed by the periareolar area. Daily sun protection was associated with a significantly lower incidence of hypertrichosis (P < .05), as was confirmed and shown to be independent of Fitzpatrick skin type by binary logistic regression analysis (odds ratio = 0.41, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: In our clinic, we observed paradoxical hypertrichosis after laser hair removal in a small minority of cases, as described by others. We did not observe differences in incidence related to skin type, but daily sun protection and LHR with diode laser SHR were associated with significant reductions in incidence rates. In addition to previously reported common sites, we also identified the periareolar area as a high-risk region.

The mortality rate of oral cancer has not improved over the past three decades despite remarkable advances in cancer therapies. Oral cancers contain a subpopulation of cancer stem cells (CSCs) that share characteristics associated with normal stem cells, including self-renewal and multi-differentiation potential. CSCs are tumorigenic, play a critical role in cancer infiltration, recurrence, and distant metastasis, and significantly contribute to drug resistance to current therapeutic strategies, including immunotherapy. Cytotoxic CD8+ T lymphocytes (CTLs) are key immune cells that effectively recognize peptide antigens presented by the major histocompatibility complex class I molecules. Increasing evidence suggests that cancer antigen-specific targeting by CTLs effectively regulates CSCs that drive cancer progression. In this study, we utilized data from public domains and performed various bioassays on human oral squamous cell carcinoma clinical samples and cell lines, including HSC-2 and HSC-3, to investigate the potential role of olfactory receptor family 7 subfamily C member 1 (OR7C1), a seven transmembrane G-protein-coupled olfactory receptor that is also expressed in nonolfactory tissues and was previously reported as a novel marker and target of colon cancer initiating cell-targeted immunotherapy, in CSC-targeted treatment against oral cancer. We found that the OR7C1 gene was expressed only in oral CSCs, and that CTLs reacted with human leukocyte antigen-A24-restricted OR7C1 oral CSC-specific peptides. Taken together, our findings suggest that OR7C1 represents a novel target for potent CSC-targeted immunotherapy in oral cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among women with gynecological cancer, and novel treatment options are urgently needed. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, may be one of the most promising therapeutic tools for various diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of adipose-derived stem cell-derived EVs (ADSC-EVs) on ovarian cancer cell lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ADSCs and the ovarian cancer cell lines SKOV3 and OV90 were used for analysis. ADSC-EVs were isolated through ultracentrifugation and validated using a cryotransmission electron microscope, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and western blotting. Then, the effect of ADSC-EVs on ovarian cancer cells was investigated using IncuCyte and microRNA sequencing. Moreover, the potential functions of miRNAs were evaluated by gain-of function analysis and in silico analysis. RESULTS: ADSC-EVs suppressed SKOV3 and OV90 cell proliferation. In particular, small EVs (sEVs) from ADSCs exhibited a stronger antitumor effect than ADSC-medium/large EVs (m/lEVs). Comparison of the miRNA profiles between ADSC-sEVs and ADSC-m/lEVs, along with downstream pathway analysis, suggested the involvement of the let-7 family. Overexpression of hsa-let-7b-5p and hsa-let-7e-5p significantly suppressed the proliferation of SKOV3 cells. In silico analysis revealed that four potential target genes of hsa-let-7b-5p and hsa-let-7e-5p were significantly associated with the prognoses of the patients. CONCLUSION: ADSC-sEVs had a stronger antitumor effect than ADSC-m/lEVs. Hsa-let-7b-5p and hsa-let-7e-5p, which are highly abundant in ADSC-sEVs, suppressed cell proliferation. These findings may open up new possibilities for therapeutic approaches using ADSC-sEVs.

BACKGROUND: Non-gestational choriocarcinoma (NGC) is a rare subtype of malignant germ cell tumour and there is no consensus on its treatment. The lack of suitable preclinical models for NGC is a challenge in drug discovery research. Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models recapitulate the tumour microenvironment of the original cancer tissue. Therefore, they have received considerable attention for studies on rare cancer. Here, we aimed to establish a PDX model from a patient with recurrent NGC. METHODS: Fresh NGC tumour tissue was immediately transplanted into a severely immune-deficient mouse (NOD.Cg-Prkdcscid1l2rgtm1Wjl/SzJ) and maintained for more than three in vivo passages. Subsequently, we evaluated the molecular characteristics of the PDX model using immunohistochemistry, polymerase chain reaction, and RNA sequencing. Moreover, the PDX tumours were transplanted into BALB/c nude mice, and we evaluated their sensitivity for cisplatin and methotrexate. RESULTS: The PDX tumour maintained the morphological features of NGC. Moreover, Immunohistochemistry revealed that the human chorionic gonadotropin, cytokeratin 7, and EpCAM expression levels were similar to those in the primary tumour. Furthermore, serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels were elevated in both the primary tumour and the PDX models. Additionally, using PCR analysis with species-specific primers, we confirmed that the PDX tumour contained human genes and was derived from human tissue. Moreover, the gene expression profile of the NGC was compared with that of epithelial ovarian cancer samples and cell lines, and 568 dysregulated genes in the NGC were extracted. The expression of the dysregulated genes in PDX was significantly correlated with that in the primary tumour (R2 = 0.873, P < 0.001). Finally, we demonstrated that the PDX tumour was sensitive to cisplatin and methotrexate; therefore, its clinical response to the agents was similar to that of the primary tumour. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully established a PDX model of NGC, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time. The established PDX retained the molecular and transcriptome characteristics of the primary tumour and can be used to predict drug effects. It may facilitate further research and the development of novel therapeutic agents for NGC.

OBJECTIVES: Ovarian cancer constitutes one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths, and preventing chemotherapy resistance and recurrence in patients with ovarian cancer remains a challenge. Herein, we aimed to identify the effect of luteolin, a novel therapeutic agent targeting vaccinia-related kinase 1 (VRK1), on high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). METHODS: Phosphokinase array, RNA sequencing, and cell cycle and apoptosis assays were conducted to determine the underlying mechanism of the effect of luteolin on HGSOC cells. The anticancer effects of oral and intraperitoneal luteolin administration were assessed in patient-derived xenograft models via several methods, including the assessment of tumor size and immunohistochemistry of phospho-p53, phosphor-HistoneH3 and cleaved caspase 3. RESULTS: Luteolin reduced HGSOC cell proliferation and increased apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at G2/M. Compared with controls, several genes were dysregulated in luteolin-treated cells, and luteolin activated the p53 signaling pathway. The human phosphokinase array revealed distinct p53 upregulation in luteolin-treated cells, as confirmed by p53 phosphorylation at ser15 and ser46 using western blot analysis. In patient-derived xenograft models, oral or intraperitoneal luteolin administration substantially suppressed tumor growth. Moreover, combination treatment involving luteolin and cisplatin inhibited tumor cell proliferation, especially in cisplatin-resistant HGSOC cell lines. CONCLUSIONS: Luteolin demonstrated considerable anticancer effect on HGSOC cells, reduced VRK1 expression, and activated the p53 signaling pathway, thereby inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in G2/M and inhibiting cell proliferation. Furthermore, luteolin exhibited a synergistic effect with cisplatin both in vivo and in vitro. Thus, luteolin can be considered a promising cotreatment option for HGSOC.

Uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS) is a malignant stromal tumor arising from the myometrium with a poor prognosis and very limited response to current chemotherapy. This study aimed to identify novel targets for ULMS through a three-step screening process using a chemical library consisting of 1271 Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs. First, we evaluated their inhibitory effects on ULMS cells and identified four candidates: proscillaridin A, lanatoside C, floxuridine, and digoxin. Then, we subcutaneously or orthotopically transplanted SK-UT-1 cells into mice to establish mouse models. In vivo analyses showed that proscillaridin A and lanatoside C exerted a superior antitumor effect. The results of mRNA sequencing showed that uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) was suppressed in the sirtuin signaling pathway, increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inducing cell death. Moreover, the downregulation of UCP2 induced ROS and suppressed ULMS cell growth. Furthermore, analyses using clinical samples showed that UCP2 expression was significantly upregulated in ULMS tissues than in myoma tissues both at the RNA and protein levels. These findings suggested that UCP2 is a potential therapeutic target and can contribute to the development of novel therapeutic strategies in patients with ULMS.

OBJECTIVE: Although pneumonia is the leading cause of death among patients with dementia, the specific underlying causes remain unclear. In particular, the potential connection between pneumonia risk and dementia-related daily living difficulties, such as oral hygiene practice and mobility impairment, and the use of physical restraint as a management practice, has not been extensively studied. METHODS: In our retrospective study, we included 454 admissions corresponding to 336 individual patients with dementia who were admitted to a neuropsychiatric unit due to behavioral and psychological symptoms. The admissions were divided into two groups: those who developed pneumonia while hospitalized (n=62) and those who did not (n=392). We investigated differences between the two groups in terms of dementia etiology, dementia severity, physical conditions, medical complications, medication, dementia-related difficulties in daily living, and physical restraint. To control potential confounding variables, we used mixed effects logistic regression analysis to identify risk factors for pneumonia in this cohort. RESULTS: Our study found that the development of pneumonia in patients with dementia was associated with poor oral hygiene, dysphagia, and loss of consciousness. Physical restraint and mobility impairment showed a weaker, nonsignificant association with the development of pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that pneumonia in this population may be caused by two primary factors: increased pathogenic microorganisms in the oral cavity due to poor hygiene, and an inability to clear aspirated contents due to dysphagia and loss of consciousness. Further investigation is needed to clarify the relationship between physical restraint, mobility impairment, and pneumonia in this population.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the prognostic value of mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) and evaluate the predictive performance of a random forest model incorporating MPV and other key clinicopathological factors. METHODS: A total of 204 patients with OCCC treated between January 2004 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinicopathological characteristics and preoperative laboratory data were collected, and survival outcomes were evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models. An optimal MPV cutoff was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. A random forest model was then constructed using the identified independent prognostic factors, and its predictive performance was evaluated. RESULTS: The ROC analysis identified 9.3 fL as the MPV cutoff value for predicting 2-year survival. The MPV-low group had lower 5-year overall survival and progression-free survival rates than the MPV-high group (p = 0.003 and p = 0.034, respectively). High MPV emerged as an independent prognostic factor (p = 0.006). The random forest model, incorporating the FIGO stage, residual tumors, peritoneal cytology, and MPV, demonstrated robust predictive performance (area under the curve: 0.905). CONCLUSION: MPV is a promising prognostic indicator in OCCC. Lower MPV correlated with worse survival rates, advocating its potential utility in refining patient management strategies. The commendable predictive performance of the random forest model, integrating MPV and other significant prognostic factors, suggests a pathway toward enhanced survival prediction, thereby warranting further research.

Amyloid formation and the deposition of the amyloid-ß peptide are hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. Immunotherapies using anti-amyloid-ß antibodies have been highlighted as a promising approach for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease by enhancing microglial clearance of amyloid-ß peptide. However, the efficiency of antibody delivery into the brain is limited, and therefore an alternative strategy to facilitate the clearance of brain amyloid is needed. We previously developed an artificial photo-oxygenation system using a low molecular weight catalytic compound. The photocatalyst specifically attached oxygen atoms to amyloids upon irradiation with light, and successfully reduced the neurotoxicity of aggregated amyloid-ß via inhibition of amyloid formation. However, the therapeutic effect and mode of actions of the photo-oxygenation system in vivo remained unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that photo-oxygenation facilitates the clearance of aggregated amyloid-ß from the brains of living Alzheimer's disease model mice, and enhances the microglial degradation of amyloid-ß peptide. These results suggest that photo-oxygenation may represent a novel anti-amyloid-ß strategy in Alzheimer's disease, which is compatible with immunotherapy.

Adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) sheets have potential to be effective in various therapies. In this study, we first demonstrated that a cell sheet composed of human ADSCs could be created using a new temperature-responsive culture dish from the DIC Corporation. The dish can cause detachment of adherent cells due to temperature changes, but a few morphological analyses have evaluated the presence or absence of damage on the detached surface of cell sheet. To characterize our ADSC sheet, we tried to observe the surface of ADSC sheets with scanning electron microscope (SEM) using the ionic liquid, which enables the rapid preparation of samples. No damage was found on the surface of the ADSC sheets on the side that had been in contact with the surface of the culture dishes. In addition, when the transcriptomes of the harvested cell sheets were compared with those of monolayer cultures, no up-regulation of cell death related genes were detected. These results propose that the detachment from temperature-responsive culture dish causes no serious damage on the prepared ADSC sheet. It is also suggested that the SEM with ionic liquids is a useful and rapid method for the analysis of ADSC sheets for therapy.

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition (CPP) and synovial chondromatosis (SC) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is rarely reported. CPP disease (CPPD) is complex arthritis synonymous with excessive pyrophosphate production and variable aberrations in mineral and organic phase metabolism of the joint cartilage, leading to local inundated CPP and crystal deposition of partially deciphered predispositions. Meanwhile, SC is a rare benign synovial joint proliferative disease of unclear etiology and has a low risk of malignant transformation. However, SC manifests severe joint disability and dysfunction because of connective tissue metaplasia of the synovial membrane, which forms cartilaginous nodules with or without calcifications or ossifications. These nodules often detach and form intra-articular loose bodies and very rarely within extraarticular spaces. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 61-year-old man to expand the body of literature on these unusual coexisting arthropathies of the TMJ. The patient presented to our hospital in 2020 with complaints of pain in the right TMJ and trismus for over 6 months. Radiographic assessments of the TMJ provided a preoperative provisional diagnosis of SC. However, the histopathology of the open biopsy revealed tumor-like lesions comprising several deposits of rhomboid and rod-shaped crystals that displayed positive birefringence in polarized light, confirming a coexistence of CPPD. A second-stage operation was performed for the complete removal of the loose bodies and chalk-like lesions including synovectomy. No evidence of recurrence was recorded after a follow-up of nearly 1.5 years. CONCLUSIONS: Isolated CPPD and SC of the TMJ are prevalent in the literature however, monoarticular coexistence of these diseases is rare, due to the lack of consistency in the diagnostic criteria in clinical practice. Moreover, optimal treatment depends on several considerations. This report delineated the molecular etiopathology and underscored the need for continued deciphering of the causal mechanisms of coexisting CPPD and SC of the TMJ. In addition, the importance of confirmatory testing for accurate diagnosis, and appropriate management of these diseases were discussed.

[Purpose] Young's modulus distributions for subcutaneous and muscle tissues in a large sample of healthy individuals, based on ultrasonography and compression testing, remains uninvestigated till date. This study aimed to separately estimate the hardness of subcutaneous tissues and muscles in the human gluteal region under a range of loads in terms of mean Young's moduli and associated distributions. [Participants and Methods] Data of 21 males aged 20-22 years were acquired using synchronous compression testing and ultrasonography. Stress-strain curves comprised the loads applied (stress) were plotted against ultrasonographic changes in subcutaneous/muscle tissue thickness (strain). Young's moduli were calculated as slopes of approximation curves fitted to highly linear regions of the stress-strain curves. [Results] Young's moduli (mean ± standard deviation) for gluteal subcutaneous and muscle tissues were estimated as: 26.1 ± 19.0 kPa, 1-N load; 2,199.1 ± 1,354.8 kPa, 30-N load; and 62.2 ± 10.3 kPa, 5-N load; 440.4 ± 80.0 kPa, 30-N load, respectively. No correlation between any pair of these measures reached statistical significance. [Conclusion] Young's moduli were successfully measured for subcutaneous and muscle tissues in a large participant sample using ultrasonography and compression testing. Our results may serve as reference data when assessing tissue hardness by palpation.

BACKGROUND: Several fatal medical complications have been associated with alcohol withdrawal, such as seizure, cardiac arrhythmia, and takotsubo cardiomyopathy. However, there have been no reports on hypovolemic shock during alcohol withdrawal, although two physical signs of alcohol withdrawal, i.e., diaphoresis and fever, can lead to hypovolemia and its medical consequences. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a patient with alcohol use disorder who exhibited hypovolemic shock and its associated acute renal failure during alcohol withdrawal with severe diaphoresis and fever even though he had consumed almost the full amount of food he was offered. Given his excessive diaphoresis and fever that were related to alcohol withdrawal, his water intake was insufficient. Infusion with extracellular fluid resolved all these medical issues. CONCLUSIONS: The increased adrenergic activity associated with alcohol withdrawal might substantially increase a patient's water-intake requirement through diaphoresis and fever and may cause severe hypovolemia and its associated medical complications.

BACKGROUND: Several surgical procedures are available for the treatment of severe blepharoptosis with poor levator function. However, the procedures have advantages and disadvantages. Particularly, complications such as lagophthalmos and lid lag are commonly observed after conventional interventions. Thus, the present study aimed to introduce a surgical technique that uses an orbital septum flap without the orbital oculi muscle for the correction of severe blepharoptosis. METHODS: The technique utilizes the orbital septum flap, which is connected with the frontalis muscle via the galea aponeurosis and frontal periosteum, to suspend the tarsal plate. In this case series, the technique was used for the correction of blepharoptosis in 16 eyes from 12 patients. RESULTS: The margin reflex distance in all patients improved at 6 months after surgery. Two patients presented with lagophthalmos and three with mild recurrence. However, revision surgery was not required, and none of patients presented with lid lag. CONCLUSIONS: For the correction of blepharoptosis, the use of the orbital septum flap without the orbital oculi muscle can be easily selected compared with other conventional methods that are more likely to cause overcorrection and closure disorders. AIM: Accumulation of ascites fluid is a major obstacle in the late phase of epithelial ovarian cancer. However, there is no consensus on a specific treatment for malignant ascites. The present study evaluated the clinical benefit of half-dose bevacizumab therapy (7.5 mg/kg every 3-4 weeks). METHODS: This was a single-arm interventional study performed at Aichi Cancer Center Hospital. Four patients with platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer and symptomatic malignant ascites were no longer considered candidates for standard chemotherapy. As a palliative approach, half-dose bevacizumab therapy (7.5 mg/kg every 3-4 weeks) was used with informed consent. The clinical data of these patients were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: All patients had been heavily pretreated and showed progressive disease. Thus, standard chemotherapy was no longer feasible, and palliative paracentesis for malignant ascites was clinically needed. Among the four patients, three did not require additional paracentesis after bevacizumab therapy, and there were no adverse events. One patient needed paracentesis owing to lymphorrhea. CONCLUSION: The use of bevacizumab therapy as a palliative approach for malignant ascites might be an option in patients with terminal-stage ovarian cancer. However, further evaluation is needed with regard to the possibility of severe side effects and medical expenses.

Levels of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), an important inflammatory mediator, are high in the serum of febrile seizure (FS) patients. However, its roles in FS and secondary epilepsy after prolonged FS are poorly understood. We demonstrate HMGB1's role in the pathogenesis of hyperthermia-induced seizures (HS) and secondary epilepsy after prolonged hyperthermia-induced seizures (pHS). In the first experiment, 14-15-day-old male rats were divided into four groups: high-dose HMGB1 (100 µg), moderate-dose (10 µg), low-dose (1 µg), and control. Each rat was administered HMGB1 intranasally 1 h before inducing HS. Temperature was measured at seizure onset with electroencephalography (EEG). In the second experiment, 10-11-day-old rats were divided into four groups: pHS + HMGB1 (10 µg), pHS, HMGB1, and control. HMGB1 was administered 24 h after pHS. Video-EEGs were recorded for 24 h at 90 and 120 days old; histological analysis was performed at 150 days old. In the first experiment, the temperature at seizure onset was significantly lower in the high- and moderate-dose HMGB1 groups than in the control group. In the second experiment, the incidence of spontaneous epileptic seizure was significantly higher in the pHS + HMGB1 group than in the other groups. Comparison between pHS + HMGB1 groups with and without epilepsy revealed that epileptic rats had significantly enhanced astrocytosis in the hippocampus and corpus callosum. In developing rats, HMGB1 enhanced HS and secondary epilepsy after pHS. Our findings suggest that HMGB1 contributes to FS pathogenesis and plays an important role in the acquired epileptogenesis of secondary epilepsy associated with prolonged FS.

Activating transcription factor 5 (ATF5) is a stress response transcription factor of the cAMP-responsive element-binding/ATF family. Earlier, we reported that ATF5 expression is up-regulated in response to stress, such as amino acid limitation or arsenite exposure. Although ATF5 is widely expressed in the brain and the olfactory epithelium, the role of ATF5 is not fully understood. Here, the olfactory bulbs (OBs) of ATF5-deficient mice are smaller than those of wild-type mice. Histological analysis reveals the disturbed laminar structure of the OB, showing the thinner olfactory nerve layer, and a reduced number of interneurons. This is mainly due to the reduced number of bromodeoxyuridine-positive proliferating cells in the subventricular zone, where the interneuron progenitors are formed and migrate to the OBs. Moreover, the olfaction-related aggressive behavior of ATF5-deficient mice is reduced compared to wild-type mice. Our data suggest that ATF5 plays a crucial role in mouse OB development via interneuron.

The causes of idiopathic exophthalmos were still unknown. We used computed tomography to compare the orbital structures of patients with idiopathic exophthalmos and those of a healthy Japanese population. A total of 18 orbits (ranged 17-52 years) in idiopathic exophthalmos and 334 normal orbits (ranged 17-59 years) were included. On computed tomography, the eyeball and orbit sizes, lateral wall thickness and length, perpendicular distance from the interzygomatic line to the medial orbital rim, and the nasal cavity width were measured. No significant differences in eyeball or orbit sizes were found between the idiopathic exophthalmos and control groups (P > 0.05). In contrast, the mean lateral wall thickness of the idiopathic exophthalmos group was significantly thicker than that of the control group (P < 0.01). The lateral wall length was shorter with significant difference (P < 0.05). The perpendicular distance and the width of the nasal cavity in the idiopathic exophthalmos group were longer with significant difference (P < 0.05). The cause of idiopathic exophthalmos is compression of orbital contents by the medial wall expansion. The force of expansion of medial wall also influences the zygoma according to Wolff law.
