Physiological and perceptual responses of a guard passing test and a simulated Brazilian jiu-jitsu combat: a pilot study. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2024-Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling combat sport characterized by high-intensity efforts during the scoring actions interspersed by low-intensity actions or pause during the referee stoppage. Therefore, understanding of the physiological response to a BJJ match and BJJ-specific test can contribute to both athletes testing and training prescription. Thus, the present study aimed to compare the physiological and perceptual responses to a guard passing test (GPT) and to a simulated BJJ combat (simulated combat [SC]). For that, 7 male BJJ athletes performed a BJJ SC and the GPT at different days at random order. GPT was composed by 6 sets of all-out guard passing movements. Heart rate, blood lactate concentration ([La]), and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured immediately after SC and after each set of GPT. RPE increased after sets 4, 5, and 6 compared with set 1, with no differences to SC (p < 0.001). In additionally, no differences were observed between [La] or heart rate after SC to GPT. Results suggests that GPT is an efficient training protocol that elicits similar physiological and perceptual responses to BJJ combat. Future studies should investigate GPT reliability and validity for performance assessment.

Although the beneficial effects of aerobic training on cardiovascular risk factors are evident, the potential beneficial effect of strength and combined training on these risk factors is controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aerobic and strength training programmes, performed alone or in combination, on cardiovascular risk factors in sedentary, apparently healthy and non-obese adult men. The study was conducted with 37 subjects who were randomly divided into the following groups: aerobic (AG), combined (ASG), strength (SG) and control (CG). The exercise programmes were performed three times a week and lasted approximately 50 minutes. Dietary intake, anthropometry, blood pressure, muscular strength, aerobic capacity, lipid profile and glycaemic control were assessed before and after 12 weeks of the intervention. One-way analysis of variation (ANOVA) for baseline, and ANOVA for repeated measures were used to assess differences between the initial and final time points of the four groups. Changes in blood pressure and glycaemic control were not significant in any of the groups. No differences were observed in LDL-C between training groups. HDL-C increased significantly only in the AG. In conclusion, if minimal changes in the lipid profile are needed, an aerobic training programme can provide possible benefits for HDL-C in apparently healthy and non-obese adult men.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to assess the content validity of a catalog of 76 judo exercises. Two groups of raters comprising 16 judo experts evaluated the following content validity indicators: Clarity of Language, Practical Pertinence, Theoretical Relevance, and the Dimension of each exercise. The results confirmed the content validity of the judo training catalog with indicators showing scores greater than 0.80. These findings suggest that all 76 judo exercises are pertinent, representative of judo training and understandable for judo coaches. Thus, this catalog of judo exercises may help judo coaches in the selection and recording of exercises.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the anthropometric, physiological and nutritional profiles of elite beach handball athletes. Additionally, the cardiometabolic demands of matches were characterized. METHODS: Six players (24.7±2 years old, 168±0.08 cm, 63.8±7.1 kg) from Brazilian selection, which ranks first in the world, were characterized in terms of aerobic capacities, speeds, anaerobic capacities, muscle power and dietetic profiles. In an official match, heart rate and lactate production were measured. RESULTS: The athletes exhibited a VO2 max of 44.5±4.7 mL/kg/min, a 20-m speed of 3.214±0.43 seconds, a maximal anaerobic power of 337.3±126.3 watts and a long jump muscle power of 210.1±16.6 cm). The athletes had a mean body fat percentage of 24.9±3.0% and balanced macronutrient intakes. During the match, the lactate concentrations were 13.8 mM and 14.1 mM in the middle and at the end of the first set, respectively, and 11.7 mM and 12.0 mM in the middle and end of the second set, respectively. All players, with the exception of the goalkeeper, maintained a median heart rate of at least 123 bpm and no more than 196 bpm. CONCLUSIONS: The athletes exhibited only moderate aerobic capacities and better anaerobic and force capacities and high lactate production during the match.
