The main of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation of tropical tree foliage in ruminant diets on the in vitro fermentation, bacterial population, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and enteric CH4 production. Seven experimental diets were evaluated: a control treatment of Pennisetum purpureum (T7) and six treatments of P. purpureum supplemented (30%) with the foliage of Neomillspaughia emargiata (T1), Tabernaemontana amygdalifolia (T2), Caesalpinia gaumeri (T3), Piscidia piscipula (T4), Leucaena leucocephala (T5), and Havardia albicans (T6). The T2, T7, and T5 treatments had the highest (p < 0.05) digestibility of dry matter. Overall, supplementation increased (p < 0.05) the concentrations of propionic and butyric acid and decreased acetic acid. Methanogenic bacteria decreased (p < 0.05) in T1, T2, T5, and T6. Ruminococcus albus decreased in T1, T2, T3, and T5 and Selenomonas ruminiantum increased in T3. Fibrobacter succinogenes increased, except in T5. Methane production decreased (p < 0.05) in T1, T4, T5, and T6. The supplementation with Leucaena leucocephala, Tabernaemontana amygdalifolia, Neomillspaughia emargiata, Piscidia piscipula, Havardia albicans, and Caesalpinia gaumeri is a potential alternative nutritional strategy for ruminants that results in positive changes in VFAs profile, a decrease on CH4 production and methanogenic bacteria, and changes on fibrolytic and non-fibrolytic bacteria composition.HIGHLIGHTSTropical tree foliage supplementation increased propionic and butyric acid and decreased acetic acid concentrations.Fibrolytic, non-fibrolytic, and Methanogenic bacteria were selectively modulated with the supplementation of tropical tree foliage.The enteric methane (CH4) production decreased with the supplementation of tree foliage.The supplementation of Tabernaemontana amygdalifolia and Leucaena leucocephala had the highest digestibility and is a potential alternative nutritional strategy for ruminants.

In this paper, breast cancer patients were monitored throughout their chemotherapy treatments (CHT), with blood serum sample Raman spectroscopy and multivariate analysis, approximately for a year. First of all, we discriminate between healthy and clinically diagnosed breast cancer patients. Breast cancer detection in terms of sensitivity and specificity were 87.14% and 90.55% respectively. Although no shifts of peaks in mean spectrum of samples from breast cancer patients were found with respect to the mean spectrum from control patients, some peaks did show clear differences in intensity, the greatest disparities found at 509, 545, 1063, 1103, 1338, 1556, 1083 and 1449 cm- 1 are associated with amino acids and phospholipid, 1246 and 1654 cm- 1, corresponding to amide III and I, respectively. Other peaks of interest encountered at 450, 661, 890, 917 and 1405 cm- 1 are associated to glutathione. Then, 6 breast cancer patients were monitored during their chemotherapy treatments, the results were in complete correspondence with their medical records, enabling a detailed study of the evolution of each patient's cancer. A special interest arose in the possible correlation between the intensity of Raman peak, 450 cm- 1, corresponding to glutathione and evolution of cancer throughout CHT, i.e., glutathione appears to be a good candidate as breast cancer biomarker. The results confirmed that Raman spectroscopy and PCA are, not only a good support to current breast cancer detection techniques, but could also be excellent techniques to monitor more efficiently breast cancer patients undergoing CHT, using blood serum samples which are a lot less invasive than other methods.

BACKGROUND: Wheezes and crackles are well-known signs of lung diseases, but can also be heard in apparently healthy adults. However, their prevalence in a general population has been sparsely described. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of wheezes and crackles in a large general adult population and explore associations with self-reported disease, smoking status and lung function. METHODS: We recorded lung sounds in 4033 individuals 40 years or older and collected information on self-reported disease. Pulse oximetry and spirometry were carried out. We estimated age-standardized prevalence of wheezes and crackles and associations between wheezes and crackles and variables of interest were analyzed with univariable and multivariable logistic regressions. RESULTS: Twenty-eight percent of individuals had wheezes or crackles. The age-standardized prevalence of wheezes was 18.6% in women and 15.3% in men, and of crackles, 10.8 and 9.4%, respectively. Wheezes were mostly found during expiration and crackles during inspiration. Significant predictors of expiratory wheezes in multivariable analyses were age (10 years increase - OR 1.18, 95%CI 1.09-1.30), female gender (1.45, 1.2-1.8), self-reported asthma (1.36, 1.00-1.83), and current smoking (1.70, 1.28-2.23). The most important predictors of inspiratory crackles were age (1.76, 1.57-1.99), current smoking, (1.94, 1.40-2.69), mMRC ≥2 (1.79, 1.18-2.65), SpO2 (0.88, 0.81-0.96), and FEV1 Z-score (0.86, 0.77-0.95). CONCLUSIONS: Nearly over a quarter of adults present adventitious lung sounds on auscultation. Age was the most important predictor of adventitious sounds, particularly crackles. The adventitious sounds were also associated with self-reported disease, current smoking and measures of lung function. The presence of findings in two or more auscultation sites was associated with a higher risk of decreased lung function than solitary findings.

In a previous study, we pointed out that the neurotoxic action evoked by methylmercury (MeHg), a potent environmental pollutant responsible for fatal food poisoning, is associated with alterations of cellular excitability by irreversible blockade of sodium and calcium currents. Here, we investigated the MeHg effects on synaptic transmission and neuronal plasticity using extracellular field recording in CA1 area of rat hippocampal slices. MeHg caused a fast and drastic depression of evoked field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) in a concentration-dependent manner with an IC50 of 25.7 µM. This depression was partially caused by the irreversible reduction of axon recruitment deduced from the decrement of the fiber volley (FV) amplitude. Nevertheless, this MeHg-induced synaptic depression represents a true reduction of synaptic efficacy, as judged by input/output curves. In addition, a reduction on presynaptic release of glutamate was detected with the paradigm of paired-pulse facilitation during MeHg application. Moreover, MeHg also reduced population spike (PS) ampxlitude, and this effect was more prominent when the PS was evoked by ortodromic stimulation than by antidromic stimulation. Interestingly, despite these strong effects of MeHg on synaptic transmission and excitability, this compound did not modify the induction of long-term synaptic potentiation (LTP). The effects described here for MeHg were irreversible or very slowly reversible after drug wash-out. In summary, the blockade of sodium and calcium channels by MeHg affects synaptic transmission and cellular excitability but not synaptic plasticity.

The design and performance of borate glass samples compositionally pre-designed to be femtosecond laser writable via laser-induced ion migration is reported in this Letter. It is demonstrated that borate glasses modified on purpose with small amounts of La2O3 and Na2O can be straightforwardly used to produce high-index contrast (Δn) waveguides by femtosecond-laser-assisted ion migration. The positive Δn of the waveguides is caused by the local enrichment of La2O3 in the guiding region with a slope of 8·10-3(mol.%)-1. The value of this is consistent with numerical aperture measurements of the waveguides and local compositional measurements at the guiding region performed by energy-dispersive x-ray micro-analysis. The maximum achievable Δn values can be controlled through the initial La2O3 content of the glass. Maximum Δn values >10-2 for samples with just 5.5 mol. % of La2O3 have been produced. This compositional design approach could be potentially used to produce highly efficient femtosecond laser writeable glasses in other glass families.

In this work, we propose to the Raman spectroscopy as a new technique for the detection of the type 2 diabetes using blood serum samples. The serum samples were obtained from 15 patients who were clinically diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 20 healthy volunteers. The average spectra showed equally intense peaks as, 695 cm-1, the doublet of tyrosine at 828 and 853 cm-1, phenylalanine at 1002 and 1028 cm-1, the phospholipid shoulder at 1300-1345 cm-1, and proteins (amide I) at 1654 cm-1. The major differences were found at 661 and 1404 cm-1 (glutathione), 714 (polysaccharides), 605 (Phe), 545 cm-1 (tryptophan), and the shoulder of amide III at 1230-1282 cm-1, where seem to disappear in the diabetes spectrum. On the contrary, the region that is more highlighted due to that diabetes peaks are clearly more intense was 897-955 cm-1. Principal component analysis and linear discriminate analysis were employed for developing discrimination method. The first three principal components provided a classification of the samples from healthy and diabetes patients with high sensitivity and specificity. In addition, when the first principal component was plotted as a function of the Raman shift, it revealed these shifts accounted for the greatest differences between control and diabetes samples, which coincided with the shifts of spectral differences shown by mean spectra. Our results demonstrated that serum sample Raman spectroscopy promises to become a non-invasive support tool of the currently applied techniques for type 2 diabetes detection, decreasing the false-positive cases.

Composite material (AC-ZnO) was prepared by growing ZnO nanoparticles during the production of biomass based-activated carbon (AC) via the incorporation of zinc acetate in the process. Comprehensive analyses confirmed the presence of ZnO nanoparticles over the AC surface and described the particular nature of the composite adsorbent. Methylene blue (MB) equilibrium data fitted the Dubinin-Radushkevich model. The MB adsorption capacity was higher for the bare activated carbons (197.9-188.7 mg/g) than the activated carbons with ZnO nanoparticles (137.6-149.7 mg/g). The adsorption of the MB on the adsorbents is physical because the mean adsorption energy (E) is between 1.76 and 2.00 kJ/mol. Experiments that combine adsorption and photocatalysis were carried out with different loads of adsorbents and with and without UV-light exposure. Photocatalytic activity was identified mostly at the first stage of the adsorption process and, in the case of experiments with less load of the composite AC-ZnO, because the light obstruction effect of the activated carbon is more for higher loads. The ZnO grown over AC improves the adsorption of cations such as Pb, Al and Fe in aqueous phase (polluted river water) and provides antibacterial capacity against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium.

Choline is present at cholinergic synapses as a product of acetylcholine degradation. In addition, it is considered a selective agonist for α5 and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). In this study, we determined how choline affects action potentials and excitatory synaptic transmission using extracellular and intracellular recording techniques in CA1 area of hippocampal slices obtained from both mice and rats. Choline caused a reversible depression of evoked field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) in a concentration-dependent manner that was not affected by α7 nAChR antagonists. Moreover, this choline-induced effect was not mimicked by either selective agonists or allosteric modulators of α7 nAChRs. Additionally, this choline-mediated effect was not prevented by either selective antagonists of GABA receptors or hemicholinium, a choline uptake inhibitor. The paired pulse facilitation paradigm, which detects whether a substance affects presynaptic release of glutamate, was not modified by choline. On the other hand, choline induced a robust increase of population spike evoked by orthodromic stimulation but did not modify that evoked by antidromic stimulation. We also found that choline impaired recurrent inhibition recorded in the pyramidal cell layer through a mechanism independent of α7 nAChR activation. These choline-mediated effects on fEPSP and population spike observed in rat slices were completely reproduced in slices obtained from α7 nAChR knockout mice, which reinforces our conclusion that choline modulates synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability by a mechanism independent of nicotinic receptor activation.

Phylogenetic relationships among species can provide insight into how new species arise. For example, careful consideration of both the phylogenetic and geographic distributions of species in a group can reveal the geographic models of speciation within the group. One such model, sympatric speciation, may be more common than previously thought. The Hydrobatinae (Aves: Procellariformes) is a diverse subfamily of Northern Hemisphere storm-petrels for which the taxonomy is unclear. Previous studies showed that Hydrobates (formally Oceanodroma) castro breeding in the Azores during the cool season is sister species to H. monteiroi, a hot season breeder at the same locations, which suggests sympatric speciation by allochrony. To test whether other species within the subfamily arose via sympatric speciation by allochrony, we sequenced the cytochrome b gene and five nuclear introns to estimate a phylogenetic tree using multispecies coalescent methods, and to test whether species breeding in the same geographic area are monophyletic. We found that speciation within the Hydrobatinae appears to have followed several geographic modes of divergence. Sympatric seasonal species in Japan likely did not arise through sympatric speciation, but allochrony may have played a role in the divergence of H. matsudairae, a cool season breeder, and H. monorhis, a hot season breeder. No other potential cases of sympatric speciation were discovered within the subfamily. Despite breeding in the same geographic area, hydrobatine storm-petrels breeding in Baja California (H. microsoma and H. melania) are each sister to a species breeding off the coast of Peru (H. tethys and H. markhami, respectively). In fact, antitropical sister species appear to have diverged at multiple times, suggesting allochronic divergence might be common. In addition, allopatry has likely played a role in divergence of H. furcata, a north Pacific breeder, and H. pelagius, a north Atlantic breeder. This study demonstrates that a variety of mechanisms of divergence have played a role in generating the diversity of the Hydrobatinae and supports the current taxonomy of the subfamily.

The aim of the experiment was to assess the effect of condensed tannins (CT) on feed intake, dry matter digestibility, nitrogen balance, supply of microbial protein to the small intestine and energy utilization in cattle fed a basal ration of Pennisetum purpureum grass. Five heifers (Bos taurus × Bos indicus) with an average live weight of 295 ± 19 kg were allotted to five treatments consisting of increasing levels of CT (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4% CT/kg DM) in a 5 × 5 Latin square design. Dry matter intake (DMI) was similar (p > 0.05) between treatments containing 0, 1, 2 and 3% of CT/kg DM and it was reduced (p < 0.05) to 4% CT (5.71 kg DM/day) with respect to that observed with 0% CT (6.65 kg DM/day). Nitrogen balance, purine derivatives excretion in urine, microbial protein synthesis and efficiency of synthesis of microbial nitrogen in the rumen were not affected (p ≥ 0.05) by the increase in the levels of condensed tannins in the ration. Energy loss as CH4 was on average 2.7% of the gross energy consumed daily. Metabolizable energy intake was 49.06 MJ/day in cattle fed low-quality tropical grass with a DMI of 6.27 kg/day. It is concluded that concentrations of CT between 2 and 3% of DM of ration reduced energy loss as CH4 by 31.3% and 47.6%, respectively, without affecting intakes of dry and organic matter; however, digestibilities of dry and organic matter are negatively affected.

Most current guidelines do not recommend systematic screening with echocardiography in patients with candidemia, as Candida infective endocarditis (CIE) is considered an uncommon disease. During the study period, we recommended echocardiography systematically to all candidemic patients that did not have contraindications and accepted to participate in the study. We intended to assess the incidence of unrecognized CIE in adult patients with candidemia. Our institution is a tertiary teaching hospital in which we follow all patients with candidemia. From January 2007 to October 2012, echocardiography was systematically recommended to suitable candidates. We recorded 263 cases of candidemia in adult patients. Echocardiography was not performed in 76 of these patients for the following reasons: patients had died when blood cultures became positive (17), patients were critically or terminally ill (38), or the patient or physician refused the procedure (21). The remaining 187 patients constitute the basis of this report. CIE was diagnosed in 11 cases (4.2 % of the whole candidemic population and 5.9 % of the population with echocardiographic study). The results of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) suggested infective endocarditis (IE) in 5/172 patients (2.9 %), and the result of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was positive in 10/87 (11.5 %). Among 11 confirmed cases of CIE, the disease was clinically unsuspected in three patients. At least 4.2 % of all candidemic patients have CIE. CIE is frequently clinically unsuspected and echocardiography is required to demonstrate a high proportion of cases.

A time-course feeding trial was conducted for 120 days on juvenile channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) to study the effects of diets differing in oil source (fish oil or soy oil) and supplementation with a commercial probiotic. Relative levels of Δ6-fatty acid desaturase (Δ6-FAD) and fatty acid elongase (FAE) expression were assessed in brain and liver tissues. Both genes showed similar expression levels in all groups studied. Fish weight-to-length relationships were evaluated using polynomial regression analyses, which identified a burst in weight and length in the channel catfish on day 105 of treatment; this increase was related to an increase in gene expression. Mid-intestinal lactic acid bacterium (LAB) count was determined according to morphological and biochemical criteria using API strips. There was no indication that intestinal LAB count was affected by the modified diets. The Cunningham glass adherence method was applied to evaluate phagocytic cell activity in peripheral blood. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was assessed through the respiratory burst activity of spleen macrophages by the NBT reduction test. Probiotic-supplemented diets provided a good substrate for innate immune system function; the phagocytic index was significantly enhanced in fish fed soy oil and the probiotic, and at the end of the experimental period, ROS production increased in fish fed soy oil. The substitution of fish oil by soy oil is recommended for food formulation and will contribute to promoting sustainable aquaculture. Probiotics are also recommended for channel catfish farming as they may act as immunonutrients.

We report on a strong cross migration of ions in a Tellurite (Te) based glass to form waveguides using a high repetition rate femtosecond laser. The tellurite glass matrix was modified using oxides of P, Na and Zn elements of which Te and Na ions play an important role to form waveguides upon laser irradiation. Tellurium was observed to migrate causing a positive index change zone whereas sodium cross migrates to the tellurium deficient zone forming a relatively low index change region. We have used micro-Raman analysis to scan across the waveguide cross-section to understand the state of the glass network and the relation between ion migration and glass densification for waveguiding. We have found that there is an increase in TeO3 units and reduction of TeO4 units in the Te rich zones enabling densification. This work will help guide the new commercial glass manufacturing industries that aim at producing mid-infrared transparent glasses like tellurite, tellurides and chalcogenides for the production of waveguide based devices.

We report on the fabrication of laser-induced periodic surface structures in Cr films upon high repetition rate fs laser irradiation (up to 1 MHz, 500 fs, 1030 nm), employing beam scanning. Highly regular large-area (9 cm2) gratings with a relative diffraction efficiency of 42% can be produced within less than 6 min. The ripple period at moderate and high fluences is 0.9 µm, with a small period of 0.5 µm appearing at lower energies. The role of the irradiation parameters on the characteristics of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) is studied and discussed in the frame of the models presently used. We have identified the polarization vector orientation with respect to the scan direction as a key parameter for the fabrication of high-quality, large-area LIPSS, which, for perpendicular orientation, allows the coherent extension of the sub-wavelength structure over macroscopic distances. The processing strategy is robust in terms of broad parameter windows and applicable to other materials featuring LIPSS.

Macaronesia (north-east Atlantic archipelagos) has been host to complex patterns of colonization and differentiation in many groups of organisms including seabirds such as gadfly petrels (genus Pterodroma). Considering the subspecies of widely distributed soft-plumaged petrel for many years, the taxonomic status of the three gadfly petrel taxa breeding in Macaronesia is not yet settled, some authors advocating the presence of three, two or one species. These birds have already been the subject of genetic studies with only one mtDNA gene and relatively modest sample sizes. In this study, using a total of five genes (two mitochondrial genes and three nuclear introns), we investigated the population and phylogeographical histories of petrel populations breeding on Madeira and Cape Verde archipelagos. Despite confirming complete lineage sorting with mtDNA, analyses with nucDNA failed to reveal any population structuring and Isolation with Migration analysis revealed the absence of gene flow during the differentiation process of these populations. It appears that the three populations diverged in the late Pleistocene in the last 150 000 years, that is 10 times more recently than previous estimates based solely on one mtDNA gene. Finally, our results suggest that the Madeira petrel population is ancestral rather than that from Cape Verde. This study strongly advocates the use of nuclear loci in addition to mtDNA in demographical and phylogeographical history studies.

In this Letter, we report on the successful fabrication of low loss, high refractive index contrast waveguides via ion migration upon femtosecond laser writing in phosphate glass. Waveguides were produced in two different phosphate glass compositions with high and low La(2)O(3) content. In the La-rich glass, a large refractive index increase in the guiding region was observed due to the incoming migration of La accompanied by the out-diffusion of K. The much smaller refractive index change in the La-less glass is caused by rearrangements of the glass structure. These results confirm the feasibility of adapting the glass composition for enabling the laser writing of high refractive index contrast structures via spatially selective modification of the glass composition.

RESUMEN

Transient left ventricular apical ballooning or Takotsubo syndrome (TS) is characterized by transient left ventricular dysfunction, electrocardiographic changes that mimic acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and minimal release of myocardial enzymes, with no evidence of obstructive coronary artery disease. Although prognosis and outcome are relatively good, reported complications include intraventricular thrombi and embolic events. We report an extremely rare case of AMI complicating the early in-hospital course of a patient with TS.

We demonstrate that 2D distributions of non-spherical near-coalescence silver nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in an ultrathin dielectric film can be reorganized, shaped and aligned by exposure to ultrashort laser pulses. As-grown samples prepared by pulsed laser deposition show a broad absorption band with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at 650 nm, which can be blue-shifted down to 440 nm and transformed to show polarization anisotropy. In situ white light probing of the spectral sample transmission allows control during irradiation of the position and polarization anisotropy of the SPR, effectively controlling particle reorganization and shaping. Using the high spatial resolution of the optical probe technique (better than 10 µm), the dependence of the nanoparticle shape and distribution on the local fluence can be studied in a single irradiated region. The results inferred from the spectral measurements have been confirmed by TEM studies, showing the formation of nanoparticles with prolate shape, preferential alignment along the polarization axis of the laser and a narrow size distribution. This simple and efficient approach for NP shaping and the straightforward extension to multilayer systems offer excellent perspectives for optical encoding, multidimensional data storage and fabrication of complex, polarization-sensitive spectral masks starting from thin films with near-coalescence distributions of NPs.

INTRODUCTION: The term bilateral vestibulopathy (BV) was recently defined by the Bárány Society. Loss of otolith function was not included in their criteria. Although spontaneous progression to complete bilateral impairment of vestibular function is expected, it is unlikely that patients with advanced BV will continue to present episodes of intense vertigo. Here, following CARE case report guidelines, we report the case of patients meeting the criteria for BV and still disabled by vertigo. CASE SERIES: Three patients evaluated in our department meeting the Bárány criteria for definite BV but still complaining of disabling rotatory vertigo were included. All underwent clinical and instrumental vestibular examination. The observations are reported. CONCLUSION: In case of BV, the conservation of a stable otolithic reference frame could allow patients to optimize postural strategy. It would be useful to revisit a classification of BV by stages, by introducing an evaluation of otolithic function and postural control for possible subsequent vestibular implantation.

Nowadays, the use of self-cleaning surfaces is increasing globally, especially after the COVID-2019 pandemic, and the use of nanoparticles has been shown as a plausible option for this purpose. In the present study, Cu-doped SnO2 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized (in the copper content range of 0-30 mol%) using the polymeric precursor method. The structural, morphological, vibrational, and antibacterial activity were carefully studied to unveil the effect of copper ions on the properties of the hosting matrix, aiming at maximizing the usage of Cu-doped SnO2 nanocrystals. The results show fabrication of nanoparticles near their respective exciton Bohr diameter (5.4 nm for SnO2), however, monophasic SnO2 was observed up to 15 mol%. Above this limit, a secondary CuO phase was observed, as shown by the assessed X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy data. Furthermore, the redshift of the primary A1g vibrational mode of SnO2 is successfully described using the phonon-confinement model, demonstrating a good relationship between the Raman correlation length (L) and the crystallite size (〈D〉), the latter determined from XRD. Regarding the antibacterial activity, assessed via the disc-diffusion testing method (DDTM) while challenging two bacterial species (S. aureus and E. coli), our results suggest a rapid diffusion of the nanoparticles out of the paper disc, with a synergistic effect credited to the Sn1-xCuxO2-CuO phases contributing to the inhibition of the bacteria growth. Moreover, the DDTM data scales with cell viability, the latter analyzed using the Hill equation, from which both lethal dose 50 (LD50) and benchmark dose (BMD) were extracted.
