RESUMEN
Thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters have become the leading emissive materials for highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The deposition of these materials in scalable and cost-effective ways is paramount when looking toward the future of OLED applications. Herein, a simple OLED with fully solution-processed organic layers is introduced, where the TADF emissive layer is ink-jet printed. The TADF polymer has electron and hole conductive side chains, simplifying the fabrication process by removing the need for additional host materials. The OLED has a peak emission of 502 nm and a maximum luminance of close to 9600 cd m-2 . The self-hosted TADF polymer is also demonstrated in a flexible OLED, reaching a maximum luminance of over 2000 cd m-2 . These results demonstrate the potential applications of this self-hosted TADF polymer in flexible ink-jet printed OLEDs and, therefore, for a more scalable fabrication process.

The quantification of global 5-methylcytosine (5mC) content has emerged as a promising approach for the diagnosis and prognosis of cancers. However, conventional methods for the global 5mC analysis require large quantities of DNA and may not be useful for liquid biopsy applications, where the amount of DNA available is limited. Herein, we report magnetic nanoparticles-assisted methylated DNA immunoprecipitation (e-MagnetoMethyl IP) coupled with electrochemical quantification of global DNA methylation. Carboxyl (-COOH) group-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles (C-IONPs) synthesized by a novel starch-assisted gel formation method were conjugated with anti-5mC antibodies through EDC/NHS coupling (anti-5mC/C-IONPs). Anti-5mC/C-IONPs were subsequently mixed with DNA samples, in which they acted as dispersible capture agents to selectively bind 5mC residues and capture the methylated fraction of genomic DNA. The target-bound Anti-5mC/C-IONPs were magnetically separated and directly adsorbed onto the gold electrode surface using gold-DNA affinity interaction. The amount of DNA adsorbed on the electrode surface, which corresponds to the DNA methylation level in the sample, was electrochemically estimated by differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) study of an electroactive indicator [Ru(NH3)6]3+ bound to the surface-adsorbed DNA. Using a 200 ng DNA sample, the assay could successfully detect differences as low as 5% in global DNA methylation levels with high reproducibility (relative standard deviation (% RSD) = <5% for n = 3). The method could also reproducibly analyze various levels of global DNA methylation in synthetic samples as well as in cell lines. The method avoids bisulfite treatment, does not rely on enzymes for signal generation, and can detect global DNA methylation using clinically relevant quantities of sample DNA without PCR amplification. We believe that this proof-of-concept method could potentially find applications for liquid biopsy-based global DNA methylation analysis in point-of-care settings.

Flexible electronic devices have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years due to their flexibility, reduced complexity and lightweight. Such devices can conformably attach themselves to any bendable surface and can possess diverse transduction mechanisms. Consequently, with continued emphasis on innovation and development, major technological breakthroughs have been achieved in this area. This review focuses on the advancements of using organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) in flexible electronic applications in the past 10 years. In addition, to the above mentioned features, OFETs have multiple advantages such as low-cost, readout integration, large-area coverage, and power efficiency, which yield synergy. To begin with, we have introduced organic semiconductors (OSCs), followed by their applications in various device configurations and their mechanisms. Later, the use of OFETs in flexible sensor applications is detailed with multiple examples. Special attention is paid to discussing the effects induced on physical parameters of OFETs with respect to variations in external stimuli. The final section provides an outlook on the mechanical aspects of OSCs, activation and revival processes of sensory layers, small area analysis, and pattern recognition techniques for electronic devices.
RESUMEN
Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) is an important hormone drug that is used to treat several medical conditions. It is also frequently abused by athletes as a performance enhancing agent at sporting events. The time window of the rHuEPO in blood is short. Therefore, the rapid detection of rHuEPO use/abuse at points of care and in sports requires a selective analytical method and a sensitive sensor. Herein, we present a highly selective method for the rapid detection of rHuEPO in human blood plasma by a sensitive optical sensor. rHuEPO is selectively extracted from human blood plasma by a target-specific extractor chip and converted into a biothiol by reducing its disulfide bond structure. The formed biothiol reacts with a water soluble (E)-1-((6-methoxybenzo[d]thiazole-2-yl)diazenyl)naphthalene-2,6-diolHg(ii) (BAN-Hg) optical sensor and causes its rapid decomposition. This leads to a rapid change in the sensor color from blue to pink that can be observed by the naked eye. The optical sensor was used to quantify rHuEPO in the concentration range 1 × 10-8 M to 1 × 10-12 M by UV-Vis spectroscopy. For the screening of blood plasma, an EPO-specific extractor chip was synthesized and used to selectively extract the protein from the biological matrix prior to its conversion into biothiol and quantification by the optical sensor. Since many proteins have a disulfide bond structure, the new method has strong potential for their rapid sensitive and selective detection by the BAN-Hg sensor and UV-Vis spectroscopy.

We introduce two novel solution-processable electron acceptors based on an isomeric core of the much explored diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) moiety, namely pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-1,4-dione (IsoDPP). The newly designed and synthesized compounds, 6,6'-[(1,4-bis{4-decylphenyl}-2,5-dioxo-1,2,4,5-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-3,6-diyl)bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl)]bis[2-(2-butyloctyl)-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione] (NAI-IsoDPP-NAI) and 5,5'-[(1,4-bis{4-decylphenyl}-2,5-dioxo-1,2,4,5-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole-3,6-diyl)bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl)]bis[2-(2-butyloctyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione] (PI-IsoDPP-PI) have been synthesized via Suzuki couplings using IsoDPP as a central building block and napthalimide or phthalimide as end-capping groups. The materials both exhibit good solubility in a wide range of organic solvents including chloroform (CF), dichloromethane (DCM), and tetrahydrofuran (THF), and have a high thermal stability. The new materials absorb in the wavelength range of 300-600 nm and both compounds have similar electron affinities, with the electron affinities that are compatible with their use as acceptors in donor-acceptor bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells. BHJ devices comprising the NAI-IsoDPP-NAI acceptor with poly(3-n-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the donor were found to have a better performance than the PI-IsoDPP-PI containing cells, with the best device having a VOC of 0.92 V, a JSC of 1.7 mAcm-2, a FF of 63%, and a PCE of 0.97%.

A new benzothiazole azo dye [(E)-1-((6-methoxybenzo[d]thiazole-2-yl)diazenyl)naphthalene-2,6-diol] (also known as "BAN"), has been synthesised and used as a chemosensor for the rapid and selective detection of mercury(ii) ions in water. The pink coloured chemosensor turns blue when reacted with mercury(ii) ions due to the formation of a 2 : 1 coordination complex. The complex formation causes a bathochromic shift of the chemosensor's UV absorption peak from 540 to 585 nm and turns on a highly selective fluorescence emission at 425 nm. The change in the optical property of BAN upon complexation with mercury(ii) was confirmed by ab initio calculations. The new chemosensor was used to quantify mercury(ii) ions in water by fluorescence spectroscopy down to 5 × 10-8 M (10 ppb). The limit of detection (LOD) of Hg2+ was 9.45 nM (1.8 ppb) which satisfies the maximum allowable Hg2+ concentration in drinking water that is set by the WHO. The BAN-Hg(ii) complex was used for the determination of cysteine (Cys) in aqueous solution by UV-Vis spectroscopy down to 1 × 10-7 M. The thiol-containing amino acid preferentially coordinates the mercury ions of the BAN-Hg(ii) complex. This causes dissociation of the blue-coloured complex and the liberation of the pink-coloured BAN dye. The colour change of the BAN-Hg(ii) complex from blue to pink was selective to the Cys biothiol while other non-thiol containing amino acids did not cause a colour change. For the in-field application, filter paper strips were loaded with the BAN-Hg(ii) complex and used as a disposable sensor for the detection of cysteine (Cys) by the naked eye. Therefore, the BAN chemosensor offers a sensitive, and rapid tool for the detection of mercury(ii) in water. In addition, the BAN-Hg(ii) complex can be used as a simple and selective chemosensor of the screening of purified biothiols, such cysetine, homocysteine and glutathione in biology research and pharmaceutical/food industries.

Herein, we report on the charge dynamics of photovoltaic devices based on two novel small-molecule nonfullerene acceptors featuring a central ketone unit. Using ultrafast near-infrared spectroscopy with optical and photocurrent detection methods, we identify one of the key loss channels in the devices as geminate recombination (GR) of interfacial charge transfer states (CTSs). We find that the magnitude of GR is highly sensitive to the choice of solvent and annealing conditions. Interestingly, regardless of these processing conditions, the same lifetime for GR (â¼130 ps) is obtained by both detection methods upon decomposing the complex broadband transient optical spectra, suggesting this time scale is inherent and independent of morphology. These observations suggest that the CTSs in the studied material blends are mostly strongly bound, and that charge generation from these states is highly inefficient. We further rationalize our results by considering the impact of the processing on the morphology of the mixed donor and acceptor domains and discuss the potential consequences of the early charge dynamics on the performance of emerging nonfullerene photovoltaic devices. Our results demonstrate that careful choice of processing conditions enables enhanced exciton harvesting and suppression of GR by more than 3 orders of magnitude.
RESUMEN
Two solution-processable small organic molecules, (E)-6,6'-bis(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-1,1'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-(3,3'-biindolinylidene)-2,2'-dione (coded as S10) and (E)-6,6'-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1,1'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-(3,3'-biindolinylidene)-2,2'-dione (coded as S11) were successfully designed, synthesized and fully characterized. S10 and S11 are based on a donor-acceptor-donor structural motif and contain a common electron accepting moiety, isoindigo, along with different electron donating functionalities, triphenylamine and carbazole, respectively. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra revealed that the use of triphenylamine donor functionality resulted in an enhanced intramolecular charge transfer transition and reduction of optical band gap, when compared with its carbazole analogue. Both of these materials were designed to be donor semiconducting components, exerted excellent solubility in common organic solvents, showed excellent thermal stability, and their promising optoelectronic properties encouraged us to scrutinize charge-carrier mobilities using solution-processable organic field effect transistors. Hole mobilities of the order of 2.2 × 10(-4) cm²/Vs and 7.8 × 10(-3) cm²/Vs were measured using S10 and S11 as active materials, respectively.

Through the incorporation of a thiophene functionality, a novel solution-processable small organic chromophore was designed, synthesized and characterized for application in bulk-heterojunction solar cells. The new chromophore, (2Z,2'Z)-2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(3-(5-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)thiophen-2-yl)acrylonitrile) (coded as AS2), was based on a donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) module where a simple triphenylamine unit served as an electron donor, 1,4-phenylenediacetonitrile as an electron acceptor, and a thiophene ring as the π-bridge embedded between the donor and acceptor functionalities. AS2 was isolated as brick-red, needle-shaped crystals, and was fully characterized by ¹H- and (13)C-NMR, IR, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties of AS2 were compared with those of a structural analogue, (2Z,2'Z)-2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)bis(3-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-acrylonitrile) (AS1). Benefiting from the covalent thiophene bridges, compared to AS1 thin solid film, the AS2 film showed: (1) an enhancement of light-harvesting ability by 20%; (2) an increase in wavelength of the longest wavelength absorption maximum (497 nm vs. 470 nm) and (3) a narrower optical band-gap (1.93 eV vs. 2.17 eV). Studies on the photovoltaic properties revealed that the best AS2-[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM)-based device showed an impressive enhanced power conversion efficiency of 4.10%, an approx. 3-fold increase with respect to the efficiency of the best AS1-based device (1.23%). These results clearly indicated that embodiment of thiophene functionality extended the molecular conjugation, thus enhancing the light-harvesting ability and short-circuit current density, while further improving the bulk-heterojunction device performance. To our knowledge, AS2 is the first example in the literature where a thiophene unit has been used in conjunction with a 1,4-phenylenediacetonitrile accepting functionality to extend the π-conjugation in a given D-A-D motif for bulk-heterojunction solar cell applications.

In this paper, we have synthesized two novel diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based donoracceptor (DA) copolymers poly{3,6-dithiophene-2-yl-2,5-di(2-octyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione-alt-1,5-bis(dodecyloxy)naphthalene} (PDPPT-NAP) and poly{3,6-dithiophene-2-yl-2,5-di(2-butyldecyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione-alt-2-dodecyl-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole} (PDPPT-BTRZ) via direct arylation organometallic coupling. Both copolymers contain a common electron withdrawing DPP building block which is combined with electron donating alkoxy naphthalene and electron withdrawing alkyl-triazole comonomers. The number average molecular weight (M(n)) determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) for polymer PDPPT-NAP is around 23400 g mol(−1) whereas for polymer PDPPT-BTRZ it is 18600 g mol(−1). The solid state absorption spectra of these copolymers show a wide range of absorption from 400 nm to 1000 nm with optical band gaps calculated from absorption cut off values in the range of 1.451.30 eV. The HOMO values determined for PDPPT-NAP and PDPPT-BTRZ copolymers from photoelectron spectroscopy in air (PESA) data are 5.15 eV and 5.25 eV respectively. These polymers exhibit promising p-channel and ambipolar behaviour when used as an active layer in organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) devices. The highest hole mobility measured for polymer PDPPT-NAP is around 0.0046 cm(2) V(−1) s(−1) whereas the best ambipolar performance was calculated for PDPPT-BTRZ with a hole and electron mobility of 0.01 cm(2) V(−1) s(−1) and 0.006 cm(2) V(−1) s(−1) .
RESUMEN
Organic photovoltaic devices with either bulk heterojunction (BHJ) or nanoparticulate (NP) active layers have been prepared from a 1 : 2 blend of (poly{3,6-dithiophene-2-yl-2,5-di(2-octyldodecyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione-alt-naphthalene}) (PDPP-TNT) and the fullerene acceptor, ([6,6]-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester) (PC70BM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to investigate the morphology of the active layers of the two approaches. Mild thermal treatment of the NP film is required to promote initial joining of the NPs in order for the devices to function, however the NP structure is retained. Consequently, whereas gross phase segregation of the active layer occurs in the BHJ device spin cast from chloroform, the nanoparticulate approach retains control of the material domain sizes on the length scale of exciton diffusion in the materials. As a result, NP devices are found to generate more than twice the current density of BHJ devices and have a substantially greater overall efficiency. The use of aqueous nanoparticulate dispersions offers a promising approach to control the donor acceptor morphology on the nanoscale with the benefit of environmentally-friendly, solution-based fabrication.

A novel solution-processable non-fullerene electron acceptor 6,6'-(5,5'-(9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(2,5-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3-(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione) (DPP1) based on fluorene and diketopyrrolopyrrole conjugated moieties was designed, synthesized and fully characterized. DPP1 exhibited excellent solubility and high thermal stability which are essential for easy processing. Upon using DPP1 as an acceptor with the classical electron donor poly(3-hexylthiophene), solution processable bulk-heterojunction solar cells afforded a power conversion efficiency of 1.2% with a high open-circuit voltage (1.1 V). As per our knowledge, this value of open circuit voltage is one of the highest values reported so far for a bulk-heterojunction device using DPP1 as a non-fullerene acceptor.

The applications of organic semiconductors in complex circuitry such as printed CMOS-like logic circuits demand miniaturization of the active structures to the submicrometric and nanoscale level while enhancing or at least preserving the charge transport properties upon processing. Here, we addressed this issue by using a wet lithographic technique, which exploits and enhances the molecular order in polymers by spatial confinement, to fabricate ambipolar organic field effect transistors and inverter circuits based on nanostructured single component ambipolar polymeric semiconductor. In our devices, the current flows through a precisely defined array of nanostripes made of a highly ordered diketopyrrolopyrrole-benzothiadiazole copolymer with high charge carrier mobility (1.45 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) for electrons and 0.70 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) for holes). Finally, we demonstrated the functionality of the ambipolar nanostripe transistors by assembling them into an inverter circuit that exhibits a gain (105) comparable to inverters based on single crystal semiconductors.

Bioinspired synaptic devices have shown great potential in artificial intelligence and neuromorphic electronics. Low energy consumption, multi-modal sensing and recording, and multifunctional integration are critical aspects limiting their applications. Recently, a new synaptic device architecture, the ion-gating vertical transistor (IGVT), has been successfully realized and timely applied to perform brain-like perception, such as artificial vision, touch, taste, and hearing. In this short time, IGVTs have already achieved faster data processing speeds and more promising memory capabilities than many conventional neuromorphic devices, even while operating at lower voltages and consuming less power. This work focuses on the cutting-edge progress of IGVT technology, from outstanding fabrication strategies to the design and realization of low-voltage multi-sensing IGVTs for artificial-synapse applications. The fundamental concepts of artificial synaptic IGVTs, such as signal processing, transduction, plasticity, and multi-stimulus perception are discussed comprehensively. The contribution draws special attention to the development and optimization of multi-modal flexible sensor technologies and presents a roadmap for future high-end theoretical and experimental advancements in neuromorphic research that are mostly achievable by the synaptic IGVTs.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: The high toxicity of hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] could not only cause harmful effects on humans, including carcinogenicity, respiratory issues, genetic damage, and skin irritation, but also contaminate drinking water sources, aquatic ecosystems, and soil, impairing the reproductive capacity, growth, and survival of organisms. Due to these harmful effects, detecting toxic Cr (VI) is of great significance. However, the rapid, simple, and efficient detection at a low Cr (VI) concentration is extremely challenging, especially in an acidic condition (existing as HCrO4-) due to its low adsorption free energy. RESULTS: A diketopyrrolopyrrole-based small molecule (DPPT-PhSMe) is designed and characterized to act as a chemosensor, which allows a high selectivity to Cr (VI) at an acidic condition with a low limit of detection to 10-8 M that is two orders of magnitude lower than the cut of limit (1 µM) recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). Mechanism study indicates that the rich sulfur atoms enhance the affinity to HCrO4-. Combining with favorable features of diketopyrrolopyrrole, DPPT-PhSMe not only allows dual-mode detection (colorimetric and spectroscopic) to Cr (VI), but also enables disposable paper-based sensor for naked-eye detection to Cr (VI) from fully aqueous media. The investigation of DPPT-PhSMe chemosensor for the quantification of Cr (VI) in real life samples demonstrates a high reliability and accuracy with an average percentage recovery of 102.1 % ± 4 (n = 3). SIGNIFICANCE: DPPT-PhSMe represents the first diketopyrrolopyrrole-derived chemosensor for efficient detection to toxic Cr (VI), not only providing a targeted solution to the bottleneck of Cr (VI) detection in acidic conditions (existing as HCrO4-) caused by its low adsorption free energy, but also opening a new scenario for simple, selective, and efficient Cr (VI) detection with conjugated dye molecules.

RESUMEN
Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate is an important and expensive component in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which accounts for up to 40 % of a typical PSC raw material cost. In this study, we investigated the recyclability of SnO2/FTO in PSCs by washing the spent PSCs using different solvent such as dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), acetone, water, and acetone/water mixture. Characterisation of properties of the SnO2/FTO substrates recovered from the PSC show the surface wettability of SnO2/FTO is largely unchanged with water washing while a higher hydrophobicity is obtained with organic solvent washing. Comparison of electronic properties of the SnO2/FTO substrate shows a downward shift of the conduction band by 180â meV with water washing, creating favourable energy alignment with adjacent perovskite for efficient interfacial charge injection. Consequently, PSCs using the water-based recycled SnO2/FTO substrates produced a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.33 % which is comparable to the device using fresh SnO2/FTO substrate (PCE=19.85 %). Furthermore, we demonstrated that the water washing process could retain property of SnO2/FTO substrate for decent PSC performance up to four recycling cycles. This study opens new avenues towards recycling of valuable FTO substrates in PSCs for increased sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
RESUMEN
Two-dimensional (2D) wide bandgap materials are gaining significant interest for next-generation optoelectronic devices. However, fabricating electronic-grade 2D nanosheets from non-van der Waals (n-vdW) oxide semiconductors poses a great challenge due to their stronger interlayer coupling compared with vdW crystals. This strong coupling typically introduces defects during exfoliation, impairing the optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report the liquid-phase exfoliation of few-atomic-layer thin, defect-free, free-standing ZnO nanosheets. These micron-sized, ultrathin ZnO structures exhibit three different orientations aligned along both the polar c-plane as well as the nonpolar a- and m-planes. The superior crystalline quality of the ZnO nanosheets is validated through comprehensive characterization techniques. This result is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveals that the formation of oxygen vacancies is energetically less favorable in 2D ZnO and that the c-plane loses its polarity upon exfoliation. Unlike bulk ZnO, which is typically dominated by defect-induced emission, the exfoliated nanosheets exhibit a strong, ambient-stable excitonic UV emission. We further demonstrate the utility of solution processing of ZnO nanosheets by their hybrid integration with organic components to produce stable light emitting diodes (LEDs) for display applications.
