BACKGROUND: Chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) limits long-term survival after lung transplantation. Of the two subtypes, restrictive allograft syndrome (RAS) is characterized by a larger lung volume decrease and worse prognosis than bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS). We used computed tomography (CT) volumetry to classify CLAD subtypes and determined their clinical impact. METHODS: Adult primary lung transplants performed 2003-2015 (n = 167) were retrospectively evaluated for CLAD and subclassified with CT volumetry. Lung volume decrease of < 15% from baseline resulted in BOSCT-vol and ≥15% resulted in RASCT-vol diagnosis. Clinical impact of CLAD subtypes was defined, and the prognostic value of different lung function, radiological, and lung volume parameters present at the time of CLAD diagnosis were compared. RESULTS: CLAD affected 43% of patients and was classified with CT volumetry as BOSCT-vol in 89% and RASCT-vol in 11%. Median graft survival estimate in RASCT-vol was significantly decreased compared to BOSCT-vol (1.6 vs. 9.7 years, P = .038). At CLAD onset, RASCT-vol diagnosis (P = .05), increased lung density (P = .007), and more severe FEV1 (P = .004) decline from baseline, increased graft loss risk in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: CT volumetry serves to identify lung transplant patients with a poor clinical outcome but should be validated in prospective trials.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of myocardial viability is often needed in patients with chest pain and reduced ejection fraction. We evaluated the performance of reduced resting MBF, perfusable tissue fraction (PTF), and perfusable tissue index (PTI) in the assessment of myocardial viability in a pig model of myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS AND RESULTS: Pigs underwent resting [15O]water PET perfusion study 12 weeks after surgical (n = 16) or 2 weeks after catheter-based (n = 4) occlusion of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery. MBF, PTF, and PTI were compared with volume fraction of MI in matched segments as assessed by triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining of LV slices. MBF and PTF were lower in infarcted than non-infarcted segments. Segmental analysis of MBF showed similar area under the curve (AUC) of 0.85, 0.86, and 0.90 with relative MBF, PTF, and PTI for the detection of viable myocardium defined as infarct volume fraction of < 75%. Cut-off values of relative MBF of ≥ 67% and PTF of ≥ 66% resulted in accuracies of 90% and 81%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that resting MBF, PTF, and PTI based on [15O]water PET perfusion imaging are useful for the assessment of myocardial viability.

Epitranscriptomic modifications in RNA can dramatically alter the way our genetic code is deciphered. Cells utilize these modifications not only to maintain physiological processes, but also to respond to extracellular cues and various stressors. Most often, adenosine residues in RNA are targeted, and result in modifications including methylation and deamination. Such modified residues as N-6-methyl-adenosine (m6A) and inosine, respectively, have been associated with cardiovascular diseases, and contribute to disease pathologies. The Ischemic Heart Disease Epitranscriptomics and Biomarkers (IHD-EPITRAN) study aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding to their nature and role in cardiovascular pathology. The study hypothesis is that pathological features of IHD are mirrored in the blood epitranscriptome. The IHD-EPITRAN study focuses on m6A and A-to-I modifications of RNA. Patients are recruited from four cohorts: (I) patients with IHD and myocardial infarction undergoing urgent revascularization; (II) patients with stable IHD undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting; (III) controls without coronary obstructions undergoing valve replacement due to aortic stenosis and (IV) controls with healthy coronaries verified by computed tomography. The abundance and distribution of m6A and A-to-I modifications in blood RNA are charted by quantitative and qualitative methods. Selected other modified nucleosides as well as IHD candidate protein and metabolic biomarkers are measured for reference. The results of the IHD-EPITRAN study can be expected to enable identification of epitranscriptomic IHD biomarker candidates and potential drug targets.

Objectives. We present the outcome of the first 80 patients receiving a continuous flow left ventricular assist device at Helsinki University Hospital between December 2011 and November 2018. Design. This was a single-center retrospective study. We describe our patient management in detail. The primary end-points were death, heart transplantation, or pump explant. Data was reported in accordance with the Interagency Registry for Mechanical Circulatory Support protocol. All patients receiving an assist device during the study period were included in the data analysis. Results. Mean patient age was 53 ± 12 years at implantation and 85% were male. Most patients suffered from dilated (48%), or ischemic (40%) cardiomyopathy. One-third of patients were bridged with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to assist device implantation. Implant strategy was bridge to transplant or bridge to decision in most patients (88%). Mean follow-up time on pump was 529 ± 467 days. Survival was 98, 92, 85, 79 and 71% at 1, 3, 12, 24 and 36 months, respectively. Most common causes of death were multi-organ failure, right heart failure, or stroke. Only three patients (4%) had suspected pump thrombosis, two of which resolved with medical treatment and one resulting in death. Pump exchange or explant were not performed in a single patient. Neurological events occurred in 18%, non-disabling stroke in 8%, and fatal stroke in 4% of the patients. The incidence of device-related infection was 10%. Conclusions. Survival rates were good, although one third of patients were bridged with temporary circulatory support. We report a high level of freedom from pump thrombosis, fatal stroke, and driveline infection.

Objectives. Lung transplantation remains the only available treatment option for many end-stage lung diseases. We evaluated our long-term lung transplantation results and the impact of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD). Design. Adult de novo lung transplants (2003-2015, n=175) in a nationwide single transplant center were retrospectively analyzed. Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression analysis were used to evaluate the effect of CLAD. Results. Recipient and graft 1-, 5- and 10-year survival estimates were 94%, 79% and 64%, and 93%, 75% and 59%, respectively. CLAD affected 43% of patients at a median of 2.3 years after transplantation, and impaired recipient (p = .03) and graft survival (p = .001) with the most advanced CLAD stage, and restrictive CLAD phenotype, resulting in worst graft survival. CLAD was the primary cause of death in 54% of all patients, and in 80% of patients with an established CLAD diagnosis. CLAD, high-risk cytomegalovirus serostatus, and recipient preoperative sensitization increased graft loss hazard ratio. CLAD was the only significant investigated risk factor for graft loss in multivariate regression analysis. Conclusions. Although very favourable lung transplant patient long-term survival was achieved, CLAD significantly impaired recipient and graft survival. Identification of risk factors and therapeutic options for CLAD may further improve lung transplantation results.

BACKGROUND: Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) are potential targets for the treatment of ischemic heart disease. The human RTK family consists of 55 members, most of which have not yet been characterized for expression or activity in the ischemic heart. METHODS: RTK gene expression was analyzed from human heart samples representing healthy tissue, acute myocardial infarction or ischemic cardiomyopathy. As an experimental model, pig heart with ischemia-reperfusion injury, caused by cardiopulmonary bypass, was used, from which phosphorylation status of RTKs was assessed with a phospho-RTK array. Expression and function of one RTK, ROR1, was further validated in pig tissue samples, and in HL-1 cardiomyocytes and H9c2 cardiomyoblasts, exposed to hypoxia and reoxygenation. ROR1 protein level was analyzed by Western blotting. Cell viability after ROR1 siRNA knockdown or activation with Wnt-5a ligand was assessed by MTT assays. RESULTS: In addition to previously characterized RTKs, a group of novel active and regulated RTKs was detected in the ischemic heart. ROR1 was the most significantly upregulated RTK in human ischemic cardiomyopathy. However, ROR1 phosphorylation was suppressed in the pig model of ischemia-reperfusion and ROR1 phosphorylation and expression were down-regulated in HL-1 cardiomyocytes subjected to short-term hypoxia in vitro. ROR1 expression in the pig heart was confirmed on protein and mRNA level. Functionally, ROR1 activity was associated with reduced viability of HL-1 cardiomyocytes in both normoxia and during hypoxia-reoxygenation. CONCLUSIONS: Several novel RTKs were found to be regulated in expression or activity in ischemic heart. ROR1 was one of the most significantly regulated RTKs. The in vitro findings suggest a role for ROR1 as a potential target for the treatment of ischemic heart injury.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated echocardiographic area-length methods to measure left ventricle (LV) volumes and ejection fraction (EF) in parasternal short axis views in comparison with cardiac computed tomography (CT) in pigs with chronic myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: Male farm pigs with surgical occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery (n = 9) or sham operation (n = 5) had transthoracic echocardiography and cardiac-CT 3 months after surgery. We measured length of the LV in parasternal long axis view, and both systolic and diastolic LV areas in parasternal short axis views at the level of mitral valve, papillary muscles and apex. Volumes and EF of the LV were calculated using Simpson's method of discs (tri-plane area) or Cylinder-hemiellipsoid method (single plane area). RESULTS: The pigs with coronary occlusion had anterior MI scars and reduced EF (average EF 42 ± 10%) by CT. Measurements of LV volumes and EF were reproducible by echocardiography. Compared with CT, end-diastolic volume (EDV) measured by echocardiography showed good correlation and agreement using either Simpson's method (r = 0.90; mean difference -2, 95% CI -47 to 43 mL) or Cylinder-hemiellipsoid method (r = 0.94; mean difference 3, 95% CI -44 to 49 mL). Furthermore, End-systolic volume (ESV) measured by echocardiography showed also good correlation and agreement using either Simpson's method (r = 0.94; mean difference 12 ml, 95% CI: -16 to 40) or Cylinder-hemiellipsoid method (r = 0.97; mean difference:13 ml, 95% CI: -8 to 33). EF was underestimated using either Simpson's method (r = 0.78; mean difference -6, 95% CI -11 to 1%) or Cylinder-hemiellipsoid method (r = 0.74; mean difference -4, 95% CI-10 to 2%). CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that measurement of LV volumes may be accurate, but EF is underestimated using either three or single parasternal short axis planes by echocardiography in a large animal model of chronic MI.

AIMS: Large animal models are needed to study disease mechanisms in heart failure (HF). In the present study we characterized the functional, metabolic, and structural changes of myocardium in a novel pig model of chronic myocardial infarction (MI) by using multimodality imaging and histology. METHODS AND RESULTS: Male farm pigs underwent a two-step occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery with concurrent distal ligation and implantation of a proximal ameroid constrictor (HF group), or sham operation (control group). Three months after the operation, cardiac output and wall stress were measured by echocardiography. Left ventricle (LV) volumes and mass were measured by computed tomography (CT). Myocardial perfusion was evaluated by [(15)O]water and oxygen consumption using [(11)C]acetate positron emission tomography, and the efficiency of myocardial work was calculated. Histological examinations were conducted to detect MI, hypertrophy, and fibrosis. Animals in the HF group had a large anterior MI scar. CT showed larger LV diastolic volume and lower ejection fraction in HF pigs than in controls. Perfusion and oxygen consumption in the remote non-infarcted myocardium were preserved in HF pigs as compared to controls. Global LV work and efficiency were significantly lower in HF than control pigs and was associated with increased wall stress. Histology showed myocyte hypertrophy but not increased interstitial fibrosis in the remote segments in HF pigs. CONCLUSIONS: The chronic post-infarction model of HF is suitable for studies aimed to evaluate LV remodeling and changes in oxidative metabolism and can be useful for testing new therapies for HF.

OBJECTIVES: The use of ventricular assist devices (VADs) in children is increasing. However, absolute numbers in individual centres and countries remain small. Collaborative efforts such as the Paedi-European Registry for Patients with Mechanical Circulatory Support (EUROMACS) are therefore essential for combining international experience with paediatric VADs. Our goal was to present the results from the fourth Paedi-EUROMACS report. METHODS: All paediatric (<19 years) patients from the EUROMACS database supported by a VAD were included. Patients were stratified into a congenital heart disease (CHD) group and a group with a non-congenital aetiology. End points included mortality, a transplant and recovery. Cox proportional hazard models were used to explore associated factors for mortality, cerebrovascular accident and pump thrombosis. RESULTS: A total of 590 primary implants were included. The congenital group was significantly younger (2.5 vs 8.0 years, respectively, P < 0.001) and was more commonly supported by a pulsatile flow device (73.5% vs 59.9%, P < 0.001). Mortality was significantly higher in the congenital group (30.8% vs 20.4%, P = 0.009) than in the non-congenital group. However, in multivariable analyses, CHD was not significantly associated with mortality [hazard ratio (HR) 1.285; confidence interval (CI) 0.8111-2.036, P = 0.740]. Pump thrombosis was the most frequently reported adverse event (377 events in 132 patients; 0.925 events per patient-year) and was significantly associated with body surface area (HR 0.524, CI 0.333-0.823, P = 0.005), CHD (HR 1.641, CI 1.054-2.555, P = 0.028) and pulsatile flow support (HR 2.345, CI 1.406-3.910, P = 0.001) in multivariable analyses. CONCLUSIONS: This fourth Paedi-EUROMACS report highlights the increasing use of paediatric VADs. The patient populations with congenital and non-congenital aetiologies exhibit distinct characteristics and clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: The Durable Mechanical Circulatory Support System After Extracorporeal Life Support registry is a multicenter registry of patients who were bridged from extracorporeal life support to a durable mechanical circulatory support system. Although numerous studies have highlighted the favorable outcomes after implantation of the HeartMate 3 (Abbott), the objective of our study is to examine the outcomes of patients who received HeartMate 3 support after extracorporeal life support. METHODS: Data of patients undergoing HeartMate 3 implantation from January 2016 to April 2022 at 14 centers were collected and evaluated. Inclusion criteria were patients with extracorporeal life support before HeartMate 3 implantation. The outcome was reported and compared with patients receiving other types of pumps. RESULTS: A total of 337 patients were bridged to durable mechanical circulatory support system after extracorporeal life support in the study period. Of those patients, 140 were supported with the HeartMate 3. The other types of pumps included 170 HeartWare HVADs (Medtronic) (86%), 14 HeartMate II devices (7%), and 13 (7%) other pumps (7%). Major postoperative complications included right heart failure requiring temporary right ventricular assist device in 60 patients (47%). Significantly lower postoperative stroke (16% vs 28%, P = .01) and pump thrombosis (3% vs 8%, P = .02) rates were observed in the patients receiving the HeartMate 3. The 30-day, 1-year, and 3-year survivals in patients receiving the HeartMate 3 were 87%, 73%, and 65%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In this critically ill patient population, the survivals of patients who were transitioned to the HeartMate 3 are deemed acceptable and superior to those observed when extracorporeal life support was bridged to other types of durable mechanical circulatory support systems.

AIM: The prevalence of monogenic disease-causing gene variants in lung transplant recipients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is not fully known. Their impact on clinical outcomes before and after transplantation requires more evidence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively performed sequence analysis of genes associated with pulmonary fibrosis in a cohort of 23 patients with histologically confirmed usual interstitial pneumonia that had previously undergone double lung transplantation. We evaluated the impact of confirmed molecular diagnoses on disease progression, clinical outcomes and incidence of acute rejection or chronic lung allograft dysfunction after transplantation. RESULTS: 15 patients out of 23 (65%) had a variant in a gene associated with interstitial lung disease. 11 patients (48%) received a molecular diagnosis, of which nine involved genes for telomerase function. Five diagnostic variants were found in the gene for Telomerase reverse transcriptase. Two of these variants, p.(Asp684Gly) and p.(Arg774*), seemed to be enriched in Finnish lung transplant recipients. Disease progression and the incidence of acute rejection and chronic lung allograft dysfunction was similar between patients with telomere-related disease and the rest of the study population. The incidence of renal or bone marrow insufficiency or skin malignancies did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSION: Genetic variants are common in lung transplant recipients with pulmonary fibrosis and are most often related to telomerase function. A molecular diagnosis for telomeropathy does not seem to impact disease progression or the risk of complications or allograft dysfunction after transplantation.

We evaluated the relationships between regional myocardial strain measured by speckle tracking echocardiography and viability, fibrosis, hypertrophy and oxygen consumption in the infarcted or remote myocardium in a pig model of chronic myocardial infarction (MI). Thirteen farm pigs with surgical occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery and five sham-operated pigs were studied 3 mo post-MI. Computed tomography revealed significant left ventricle remodeling. Reduced radial or circumferential strain identified areas of transmural infarction (area under the curve: 0.82 and 0.79, respectively). In the remote non-infarcted area, radial strain correlated inversely with the amount of fibrosis (râ¯=â¯-0.66, pâ¯=â¯0.04) and myocyte hypertrophy (râ¯=â¯-0.68, pâ¯=â¯0.03). Radial strain rate inversely correlated with myocardial resting oxygen consumption assessed with 11C-labeled acetate positron emission tomography (râ¯=â¯-0.71, pâ¯=â¯0.006). In conclusion, myocardial strain and strain rate reflect fibrosis, hypertrophy and oxygen consumption of the remote areas after MI.

Patients with continuous-flow left ventricle assist devices are at risk for gastrointestinal bleeding from angiodysplastic bowel lesions. Neoangiogenesis secondary to von Willebrand factor degradation and increased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signalling is likely related to their pathophysiology. We speculated that propranolol, known to downregulate VEGF signalling, could be beneficial in patients with recurrent bleeding episodes and anaemia. In this case report, we present a short-term outcome of 2 patients treated with propranolol.

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to determine the impact of different doses of a pegylated and liposomal formulation of the cardiotoxic drug doxorubicin on cardiac function, fibrosis and survival in mice. The drug causes myocardial damage by producing reactive oxygen species, mitochondrial damage and lipid peroxidation. Thymosin beta 4 is a peptide with cardioprotective, anti-oxidant and anti-fibrotic properties and we further investigated whether the peptide could attenuate this drug-induced injury by measuring cardiac function and fibrosis. RESULTS: Mice receiving high doses of doxorubicin died early during follow-up. Lowering the dose improved survival but did not markedly impair cardiac function on echocardiography and caused only limited fibrosis on histology. Thymosin beta 4 had only a mild protective effect on early cardiac function and did not significantly influence myocardial fibrosis. In conclusion, the use of pegylated and liposomal doxorubicin was not appropriate for inducing experimental cardiomyopathy. Thymosin beta 4 therapy was not beneficial in this setting.

The use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and aortic cross-clamping causes myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (I-RI) and can lead to reduced postoperative cardiac function. We investigated whether this injury could be attenuated by thymosin beta 4 (TB4), a peptide which has showed cardioprotective effects. Pigs received either TB4 or vehicle and underwent CPB and aortic cross-clamping for 60 min with cold intermittent blood-cardioplegia and were then followed for 30 h. Myocardial function and blood flow was studied by cardiac magnetic resonance and PET imaging. Tissue and plasma samples were analyzed to determine the amount of cardiomyocyte necrosis and apoptosis as well as pharmacokinetics of the peptide. In vitro studies were performed to assess its influence on blood coagulation and vasomotor tone. Serum levels of the peptide were increased after administration compared to control samples. TB4 did not decrease the amount of cell death. Cardiac function and global myocardial blood flow was similar between the study groups. At high doses a vasoconstrictor effect on mesentery arteries and a vasodilator effect on coronary arteries was observed and blood clot firmness was reduced when tested in the presence of an antiplatelet agent. Despite promising results in previous trials the cardioprotective effect of TB4 was not demonstrated in this model for global myocardial I-RI.

BACKGROUND: Levosimendan is an inotropic agent with cardioprotective and vasodilating properties used for the management of acutely decompensated heart failure. We studied the effects of levosimendan treatment on the size of myocardial infarction (MI) and left ventricular (LV) function in experimental pig model of post MI heart failure. METHODS: After occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery, animals received levosimendan 5 mg/kg/day orally for 8 weeks (n=7) or no treatment (n=18). One week after stopping treatment, transthoracic echocardiography, CT scan and positron emission tomography were performed to evaluate myocardial function, perfusion and oxidative metabolism. Histology was used to confirm the size of MI and features of LV remodelling. RESULTS: The size of MI was significantly smaller in the levosimendan group than in the controls (12±13% vs 27±15% of the LV, p=0.03). End-diastolic volume (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV) were smaller in the levosimendan than in the control group (EDV 161±29 mL vs 245±84 mL, p=0.06; ESV 81±18 mL vs 149±67 mL, p=0.03), whereas ejection fraction tended to be higher in the levosimendan group (50±6% vs 41±8%, p=0.06). CONCLUSIONS: Eight weeks of levosimendan therapy after recent LAD occlusion decreases the size of MI and leads to better preservation of LV function as well as reduced LV remodelling.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammation is an important contributor to atherosclerosis progression. A glucose analogue 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) has been used to detect atherosclerotic inflammation. However, it is not known to what extent [18F]FDG is taken up in different stages of atherosclerosis. We aimed to study the uptake of [18F]FDG to various stages of coronary plaques in a pig model. METHODS: First, diabetes was caused by streptozotocin injections (50 mg/kg for 3 days) in farm pigs (n = 10). After 6 months on high-fat diet, pigs underwent dual-gated cardiac PET/CT to measure [18F]FDG uptake in coronary arteries. Coronary segments (n = 33) were harvested for ex vivo measurement of radioactivity and autoradiography (ARG). RESULTS: Intimal thickening was observed in 16 segments and atheroma type plaques in 10 segments. Compared with the normal vessel wall, ARG showed 1.7±0.7 times higher [18F]FDG accumulation in the intimal thickening and 4.1±2.3 times higher in the atheromas (P = 0.004 and P = 0.003, respectively). Ex vivo mean vessel-to-blood ratio was higher in segments with atheroma than those without atherosclerosis (2.6±1.2 vs. 1.3±0.7, P = 0.04). In vivo PET imaging showed the highest target-to-background ratio (TBR) of 2.7. However, maximum TBR was not significantly different in segments without atherosclerosis (1.1±0.5) and either intimal thickening (1.2±0.4, P = 1.0) or atheroma (1.6±0.6, P = 0.4). CONCLUSIONS: We found increased uptake of [18F]FDG in coronary atherosclerotic lesions in a pig model. However, uptake in these early stage lesions was not detectable with in vivo PET imaging. Further studies are needed to clarify whether visible [18F]FDG uptake in coronary arteries represents more advanced, highly inflamed plaques.

BACKGROUND: Mucus-producing tumours of the appendix or mucoceles can, if left untreated, lead to dissemination of its contents into the peritoneal cavity causing substantial morbidity to the patient. Symptoms for complicated mucoceles can mimic those of acute appendicitis and the final diagnosis is most likely made intraoperatively. We here present a case that is, to our knowledge, one of only ten described in the literature and the first to characterize torsion of an appendiceal mucocele with abdominal magnetic resonance imaging. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 34-year-old Caucasian female presented at the emergency department with acute abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant. Initial diagnostic work-up including ultrasonography and abdominal magnetic resonance imaging showed a large tubular mass at the base of the appendix with indirect signs of torsion. A laparoscopic appendectomy was performed the following day where the finding was confirmed. The patient went on to have an uneventful recovery and was discharged from the hospital on the first postoperative day. CONCLUSIONS: Magnetic resonance imaging is a useful tool in identifying unknown lesions of the appendix and should be considered the primary imaging modality in especially younger patients requiring diagnostic imaging. In this case the preoperative imaging findings aided in choosing the correct timing and treatment option for the patient.

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes induces osteoporosis and during osteoporosis, vertebral bone marrow (VBM) adipose tissue amount increases. The association between this adiposity and bone marrow metabolism is unclear. Here, we compared VBM glucose metabolism and fat content in healthy and diabetic pigs, in vivo, using positron emission tomography (PET), in-phase and out-of-phase magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance proton spectroscopy ((1)H MR spectroscopy). MATERIALS/METHODS: Eleven pigs (n=11) were used. The intervention group had five diabetic and the control group had six healthy pigs. To measure metabolism, PET-imaging with [(18)F]fluoro-deoxy-glucose ([(18)F]FDG) intravenous tracer was used. 1.5-T MRI with (1)H spectroscopy, in-phase and out-of-phase imaging and chemical TAG analysis of the VBM were performed. RESULTS: We found a significant inverse correlation between VBM glucose uptake (GU) and VBM fat content (R=-0.800, p<0.01) and TAG concentration assay (R=-0.846, p<0.05). There was a trend, although non-significant, of a linear correlation between VBM (1)H MR spectroscopy and TAG concentration (R=0.661) and (1)H MR spectroscopy and in-phase and out-of-phase MR imaging (R=0.635). CONCLUSIONS: VBM glucose metabolism coupled with VBM fat content may impact diabetic induced osteoporosis.

Thymosin ß4 (Tß4) is a peptide known for its abilities to protect and facilitate regeneration in a number of tissues following injury. Its cardioprotective effects have been evaluated in different animal models and, currently, a clinical trial is being planned in patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction. This paper focuses on the effects of Tß4 on cardiac function in animal studies utilizing different imaging modalities for outcome measurements.
