RESUMEN

The authors investigated the impact of a complete smoking ban on 349 employees of a cancer treatment center. A questionnaire administered approximately 4 months after the ban was initiated queried smokers on the impact of the ban on their smoking habits, their experience of withdrawal symptoms during the workday, and changes in work habits. A separate questionnaire asked nonsmokers about changes in the work environment. Results showed that few smokers quit while a majority decreased their consumption. Withdrawal symptoms were a problem in less than half the smokers, but those reporting signs of physical dependency on nicotine tended to smoke more before and after work and reported negative changes in work performance. Nonsmokers in general reported positive effects on the work environment.

RESUMEN

The outcome of a successful orientation is expected to be a fully functioning nurse who provides safe and effective care with minimum supervision and support. Deviation from this outcome focuses disappointment on either the nurse (who may be seen as inadequate or slow) or the orienter (who may be seen as not having done a good job of preparing the nurse). The work share the new employee does not carry must be carried by someone else, putting additional stress on a department that is often short-staffed and expecting the new person to lighten the load. The cost of failure is great to both the hospital and the individual. We believe hospitals can build interpersonal relations into their orientation programs. Even if strategies aren't used throughout the hospital, the operating room can implement them. Tne newcomer who feels capable but remains socially excluded is a likely candidate for turnover.

RESUMEN

The world of health care education has been changing. This article has documented some of that change reflected in a recent survey. It has also provided some suggestions for the health care educator in making decisions regarding the structure of education, programs of education, and the marketing of education. Change frequently brings frustration, confusion, and stress. For health care educators, it brings all of that. However, this is a very exciting time to be part of health care education. Transitions enable us to develop health care education in new ways that are rewarding for the organization and for those involved.
