RESUMEN
Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding RNAs with importance in the development of cancer. They are involved in both tumor development and immune processes in tumors. The present study aims to characterize the behavior of two miRNAs, the proinflammatory miR-326-5p and the anti-inflammatory miR-146a-5p, in colorectal cancer (CRC), to decipher the mechanisms that regulate their expression, and to study potential applications. Tissue levels of miR-326-5p and miR-146a-5p were determined by qrt-PCR (real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) in 45 patients with colorectal cancer in tumoral and normal adjacent tissue. Subsequent bioinformatic analysis was performed to characterize the transcriptional networks that control the expression of the two miRNAs. The biomarker potential of miRNAs was assessed. The expression of miR-325-5p and miR-146a-5p was decreased in tumors compared to normal tissue. The two miRNAs are regulated through a transcriptional network, which originates in the inflammatory and proliferative pathways and regulates a set of cellular functions related to immunity, proliferation, and differentiation. The miRNAs coordinate distinct modules in the network. There is good biomarker potential of miR-326 with an AUC (Area under the curve) of 0.827, 0.911 sensitivity (Sn), and 0.689 specificity (Sp), and of the combination miR-326-miR-146a, with an AUC of 0.845, Sn of 0.75, and Sp of 0.89. The miRNAs are downregulated in the tumor tissue. They are regulated by a transcriptional network in which they coordinate distinct modules. The structure of the network highlights possible therapeutic approaches. MiR-326 and the combination of the two miRNAs may serve as biomarkers in CRC.
RESUMEN
Inflammatory bowel diseases are a conglomerate of disorders causing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which have gained a significant increase in prevalence in the 21st century. As they present a challenge in the terms of diagnosis as well as treatment, IBDs can present an overwhelming impact on the individual and can take a toll on healthcare costs. Thus, a quick and precise diagnosis is required in order to prevent the high number of complications that can arise from a late diagnosis as well as a misdiagnosis. Although endoscopy remains the primary method of evaluation for IBD, recent trends have highlighted various non-invasive methods of diagnosis as well as reevaluating previous ones. This review focused on the current non-invasive methods in the diagnosis of IBD, exploring their possible implementation in the near future, with the goal of achieving earlier, feasible, and cheap methods of diagnosis as well as prognosis in IBD.

Myocarditis is a major cause of heart failure and death, particularly in young individuals. Current treatments are mainly symptomatic, but emerging therapies focus on targeting inflammation and fibrosis pathways. Natural bioactive compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acids show promising anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Corticosteroids are frequently employed in the treatment of autoimmune myocarditis and appear to lower mortality rates compared to conventional therapies for heart failure. This study aims to explore the effects of Mangiferin on pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, nitro-oxidative stress markers, histopathological alterations, and cardiac function in experimental myosin-induced autoimmune myocarditis. The effects were compared to Prednisone, used as a reference anti-inflammatory compound, and Trolox, used as a reference antioxidant. The study involved 30 male Wistar-Bratislava rats, which were randomly divided into five groups: a negative control group (C-), a positive control group with induced myocarditis using a porcine myosin solution (C+), three groups with induced myocarditis receiving Mangiferin (M), Prednisone (P), or Trolox (T) as treatment. Cardiac function was evaluated using echocardiography. Biochemical measurements of nitro-oxidative stress and inflammatory markers were conducted. Finally, histopathological changes were assessed. At echocardiography, the evaluation of the untreated myocarditis group showed a trend toward decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) but was not statistically significant, while all treated groups showed some improvement in LVEF and left ventricular fraction shortening (LVFS). Significant changes were seen in the Mangiferin group, with lower end-diastolic left ventricular posterior wall (LVPWd) by day 21 compared to the Trolox group (p < 0.001). In the first week of the experiment, levels of interleukins (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α were significantly higher in the myosin group compared to the negative control group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.01), indicating the progression of inflammation in this group. Treatment with Mangiferin, Prednisone, and Trolox caused a significant reduction in IL-1ß compared to the positive control group (p < 0.001). Notably, Mangiferin resulted in a superior reduction in IL-1ß compared to Prednisone (p < 0.05) and Trolox (p < 0.05). Furthermore, Mangiferin treatment led to a statistically significant increase in total oxidative capacity (TAC) (p < 0.001) and a significant reduction in nitric oxide (NOx) levels (p < 0.001) compared to the negative control group. Furthermore, when compared to the Prednisone-treated group, Mangiferin significantly reduced NOx levels (p < 0.001) and increased TAC levels (p < 0.001). Mangiferin treatment significantly lowered creatine kinase (CK) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels on day 7 (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively) and reduced CK levels on day 21 (p < 0.01) compared to the untreated group. In the nontreated group, the histological findings at the end of the experiment were consistent with myocarditis. In the group treated with Mangiferin, only one case exhibited mild inflammatory infiltrates, represented by mononucleated leukocytes admixed with few neutrophils, with the severity graded as mild. Statistically significant correlations between the grades (0 vs. 1-2) and the study groups have been highlighted (p < 0.005). This study demonstrated Mangiferin's cardioprotective effects in autoimmune myocarditis, showing reduced oxidative stress and inflammation. Mangiferin appears promising as a treatment for acute myocarditis, but further research is needed to compare its efficacy with other treatments like Trolox and Prednisone.

Background: Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a pathology with a very poor prognostic, the only curative treatment option being surgery, in association with chemotherapy. This study aims to assess the influence that the use of a standardized pathology report after a pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) has on the R1 margins rate and the impact that this has on long term survival. Material and Methods: We included 116 patients admitted to the Regional Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Prof. Dr. O. Fodor Cluj Napoca, who underwent PD for PDAC (Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma) between January 2012 and May 2017. We divided them in two groups: 59 patients for which a nonstandardized histopathological protocol was used and 57 patients for which a standardized protocol was implemented. We considered a margin to be R1 when there were tumor cells at ¤ 1 mm from the resection margin. Results: The R1 percentage in the first group of patients was of 39%, while the R1 resection rate in the second group was of 68.4%. The median survival rate was similar in the two groups, with no statistically significant difference between them, but in the prospective study when comparing R0 vs R1 margins there was a statistically differences in 5 year OS with a p-value = 0.03. Conclusion: The use of a standardized pathology report reveals a significant increase in R1 resection rates. Also study revealed not only increasing R1 incidence when using a standardized histopathology report, but also that those margins (R1) playing a determinant role in 5-year OS. The mesopancreas is the most frequently R1 resection margin.

Colitis-associated colo-rectal cancer remains the leading cause of mortality in inflammatory bowel diseases, with inflammation remaining one of the bridging points between the two pathologies. The NLRP3 inflammasome complex plays an important role in innate immunity; however, its misregulation can be responsible for the apparition of various pathologies such as ulcerative colitis. Our review focuses on the potential pathways of upregulation or downregulation of the NLRP3 complex, in addition to evaluating its role in the current clinical setting. Eighteen studies highlighted the potential pathways of NLRP3 complex regulation as well as its role in the metastatic process in colo-rectal cancer, with promising results. Further research is, however, needed in order to validate the results in a clinical setting.

Wound healing is a complex process that is mediated and influenced by several cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors. Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is a cytokine that plays a critical role in tissue regeneration. Our study is a systematic review that addressed the implications of IL-22 in the healing of wounds caused by external factors. Thirteen studies were included in our review, most of them being experimental studies. Three clinical studies underlined the potential role of IL-22 in day-to-day clinical practice. IL-22 plays a central role in wound healing, stimulating the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of the cells involved in tissue repair. However, overexpression of IL-22 can cause negative effects, such as keloid scars or peritoneal adhesions. The results of the presented studies are promising, but further research that validates the roles of IL-22 in clinical practice and analyzes its potential implication in surgical healing is welcomed.

Background and objectives: This article aims to evaluate the number of days necessary for patients with mild and moderate forms of COVID-19 to reach undetectable levels of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the upper respiratory tract specimens. As a secondary objective, we sought to establish a correlation between different conditions associated with longer viral load as this could result in a longer period of contagion and infectivity. Materials and Methods: It is a retrospective study. A total of 70 patients with confirmed mild and moderate forms of COVID-19 were enrolled in our study. Results: Number of days with traceable viral load was 25.93 (±6.02) days in patients with mild COVID-19 and 26.97 (±8.30) in moderate form (p = 0.72). Age, male gender, and obesity, along with several chronic conditions (cardiac, liver, renal, and neurological disease), were associated with prolonged positive RT-PCR test from the nasal swab (therefore prolonged viral load). These are in general, risk factors for severe forms of COVID-19. Conclusions: There are several conditions associated with prolonged positive RT-PCR in mild and moderate forms of COVID-19. As to why and what is the significance of it remains to be studied.

Background and objectives: The aims of the study were to evaluate the utility of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) as inflammation markers and prognostic factors in patients with known interstitial lung disease secondary to connective tissue diseases (CTD-ILD) compared with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Materials and Methods: Forty-two patients with known interstitial lung disease (21 with IPF and 21 with CTD-ILD) and 42 control matched healthy patients were included. The NLR was calculated as the absolute neutrophil count divided by the absolute lymphocyte count, and the SII was calculated as follows: SII = platelets × neutrophils/lymphocytes, with the data being obtained from the patients data charts at admission, before any treatment. Results: our hypothesis was that in patients with interstitial lung disease NLR and SII would have higher values compared with patients with CTD-ILD or control healthy patients. The mean NLR value was 3.01 (±1.35) among patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and 2.38 (±1.08) among patients with CTD-ILD without significant statistical difference (p = 0.92). There was however a clinically significant statistical difference when compared with the control group, where NLR was 2.00 (±1.05) (p = 0.003). SII values were 619.37 (±329.51) in patients with IPF, 671.55 (±365.73) in CTD-ILD group and 569.73 (±326.67) in healthy subjects (p = 0.13) Conclusions: A mean NLR value of 2.8 and a SII value over 500 in patients with connective diseases can become a marker of pulmonary interstitial involvement. In the context of non-exacerbated interstitial lung disease, NLR and SII have reduced numerical values, without being statistically correlated with prognosis when we compared with patients with connective tissue diseases without exacerbation or with healthy people, the cut off being of 2.4. However subsequent studies in larger patient samples might provide changes in these cut-off values.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the indirect effect of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the surgical outcomes and oncological results of patients who underwent surgery during the lockdown period. METHODS: We analysed data from 423 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy between 2016 and 2022, with a cut-off date of March 16, 2020. Patients were categorised into two groups, namely, pre-lockdown (n = 289) and during lockdown (n = 134). Perioperative variables, histopathological findings and oncological outcomes, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and biochemical recurrence (BCR), were assessed. RESULTS: The number of radical prostatectomy increased by 24.26% during lockdown. The study included patients with a mean follow-up of 21 months. A nonsignificant trend towards a higher PSA level at presentation was found (14.22 vs. 12.53 ng/dL, p = 0.216). The International Society of Urological Pathology grade was not significantly different among radical prostatectomy specimens (p = 0.669). Lymph node involvement increased during the COVID-19 period (p = 0.046). The pT classification in prostatectomy specimens increased during the pandemic, but the difference from the pre-pandemic value was not statistically significant. The BCR rates were 24.6% pre-lockdown and 29.9% during lockdown (p = 0.136). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic led to poor postoperative results. Through a 2-year follow-up, this research investigated the effect of the pandemic on the oncological outcomes, particularly BCR, of patients who underwent radical prostatectomy. Further extended investigations and multi-institutional studies should be conducted to quantify the effect of the pandemic on various cancer outcomes and inform crisis management strategies.

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of the Gypsophila paniculata ethanol extract (GPEE) on oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic markers in a rat model of streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (DM). Phytochemical analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was performed to measure the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated through DPPH, FRAP, H2O2, and NO scavenging tests, and the in vivo effects of the GPEE were assessed in streptozotocin-induced DM rats. Treatments with the GPEE, metformin, and Trolox were administrated by gavage for 10 days. On day 11, blood was collected, and serum oxidative stress (total oxidative status, oxidative stress index, malondialdehyde, advanced oxidation protein products, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, nitric oxide, 3-nitrotyrosine, advanced glycation end-products, total antioxidant reactivity, total thiols), inflammatory (IL-1ß, NF-κB, IL-18, and gasdermin D), metabolic (fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and triglyceride-glucose index), and liver injury (AST, ALT, and AST:ALT ratio) markers were measured. The GPEE was found to have a significant polyphenols content and a moderate in vitro antioxidant effect. In vivo, the GPEE lowered oxidants and increased antioxidants, decreased inflammatory markers and blood glucose, and improved lipid profiles and transaminases in a dose-dependent manner, with higher doses having a better effect, being comparable to those of metformin and Trolox.
RESUMEN
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the predominant form of primary liver cancer and the third contributor to malignancy-related deaths worldwide. The hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG), transient elastography-liver stiffness measurement (TE-LSM), and the association between TBS (tumor burden score), alpha-fetoprotein levels, and the Child-Pugh classification (TAC score) can serve as valuable prognostic indicators for these patients. Therefore, the main objective of our research was to analyze the prognostic value of the HVPG, TE-LSM, TBS, and TAC scores. An observational and survival study was conducted on 144 subjects. Our findings indicated that HVPG greater than 10 mmHg, AFP surpassing 400 ng/mL, an advanced C-P class, and low TAC score are independent predictors of overall survival. During the multivariate analysis, AFP serum levels and C-P class proved statistically significant. The present study revealed significant differences in overall survival between the two groups divided upon HVPG values and settled by the cutoff of 10 mmHg (p = 0.02). Moreover, by dividing the cohort into three groups based on the TAC score (very low, low, and moderate), statistically significant differences in overall survival were observed across the groups (p = 0.004).
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: In the context of gastric cancer, surgical resection stands as the sole curative treatment. Central to influencing overall survival are the resection margins. This research aims to identify the factors influential in determining microscopically positive resection margins (R1) and to evaluate overall survival. METHODS: Our study encompassed 549 patients diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the stomach who underwent curative-intent surgery between January 2011 and December 2021 in our Surgery Department. We investigated the incidence of positive margins (R1) and their impact on survival rates, as well as the determinants of R1. The standardization of R1 involved ensuring a margin distance of less than 1 mm from the tumor line to the margin. RESULTS: The incidence of R1 margins was 13.29% (73 patients). Among these, proximal R1 margins were observed in 29 patients (39.72%), while 49 cases (67.12%) presented circumferentially positive margins, with 20 cases (27.39%) exhibiting distally positive margins. Nineteen patients (26.02%) had two R1 margins, and 3 patients had all resection margins microscopically positive (4.10%). Factors such as tumor dimension, invasion of other organs, pT stage, pN stage, pL1 stage, pV1 stage, pPn stage, Lauren type, and tumoral grading demonstrated significance (p < 0.01) in the occurrence of positive R1 margins. CONCLUSION: Tumor dimension, invasion of other organs, pT stage, pN stage, pL1 stage, pV1 stage, pPn stage, Lauren type, and tumoral grading could be regarded as factors for predicting microscopically positive margins. Moreover, positive resection margins have a detrimental impact on overall survival.

Perineal hernia is a rare complication of rectal surgery. Different types of surgical approach have been described, but none of them have proven their superiority. Although there are many methods of closing the defect, we selected two cases to present from a series of five cases, in which the perineal hernia was successfully resolved surgically using only the perineal approach. The reconstruction of the perineal floor and closure of the defect were performed using a synthetic polypropylene mesh. The significance of this Technical Note article lies in the fact that we describe, step by step, a surgical technique for perineal hernia using just a perineal approach.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Hydatid liver disease remains an important issue in endemic areas, which may require immediate surgery. Although laparoscopic surgery is on the rise, the presence of certain complications may require conversion to the open approach. AIM: To compare the results of laparoscopic treatment and the open approach in the context of a 12-year single institution experience, and to perform a further comparison between results from the current study and those from a previous study. METHODS: Between January 2009 and December 2020, 247 patients underwent surgery for hydatic disease of the liver in our department. Of the 247 patients, 70 underwent laparoscopic treatment. A retrospective analysis between the two groups was performed, as well as a comparison between current and previous laparoscopic experience (1999-2008). RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between the laparoscopic and open approaches regarding the cyst dimension, location, and presence of cystobiliary fistula. There were no intraoperative complications in the laparoscopic group. The cutoff value for the cyst size regarding the presence of cystobiliary fistula was 6.85 cm (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic surgery still plays an important role in the treatment of hydatid disease of the liver, with an increase in its usage over the course of years that has shown benefits regarding the postoperative recovery with a decreased rate of intraoperative complications. Although experienced surgeons can perform laparoscopic surgery in the most difficult conditions, there are some selection criteria that need to be maintained for higher quality results.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the last years increasing scientific evidence drew attention on the potential effects of anesthetic drugs on postoperative outcome in cancer patients. Local anesthetics, especially lidocaine, have been intensively studied in relation with postoperative outcome in colorectal cancer patients. Our study objectives were to investigate the effects of perioperative intravenous lidocaine infusion on neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and short-term postoperative outcome. Additionally, we also looked at 1 year outcome after intended radical colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: 150 patients scheduled for colorectal cancer surgery were randomized to receive sevoflurane anaesthesia with or without 48 hours lidocaine infusion. RESULTS: 73 patients were included in the group A (sevoflurane) and 77 in the group B (sevoflurane with lidocaine). Lidocaine infusion did not modify neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio at 24 hours after surgery (p=0.58). Patients receiving intravenous lidocaine had significantly lower morphine consumption (p=0.04), faster mobilization time (p=0.001) and fewer days spent in the hospital (p=0.04). Moreover, at 1 year follow- up, patients in group B had a significant decreased rate of recurrences (p=0.03). There was no significant difference in 1 year survival (p=0.22). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, intravenous lidocaine infusion hastened the postoperative recovery of patients in terms of mobilization, hospital discharge and opioid consumption and reduced 1 year recurrence rate. Further studies on larger groups of patients are needed.

The ability of texture analysis (TA) features to discriminate between different types of infected fluid collections, as seen on computed tomography (CT) images, has never been investigated. The study comprised forty patients who had pathological post-operative fluid collections following gastric cancer surgery and underwent CT scans. Patients were separated into six groups based on advanced microbiological analysis of the fluid: mono bacterial (n = 16)/multiple-bacterial (n = 24)/fungal (n = 14)/non-fungal (n = 26) infection and drug susceptibility tests into: multiple drug-resistance bacteria (n = 23) and non-resistant bacteria (n = 17). Dedicated software was used to extract the collections' TA parameters. The parameters obtained were used to compare fungal and non-fungal infections, mono-bacterial and multiple-bacterial infections, and multiresistant and non-resistant infections. Univariate and receiver operating characteristic analyses and the calculation of sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) were used to identify the best-suited parameters for distinguishing between the selected groups. TA parameters were able to differentiate between fungal and non-fungal collections (ATeta3, p = 0.02; 55% Se, 100% Sp), mono and multiple-bacterial (CN2D6AngScMom, p = 0.03); 80% Se, 64.29% Sp) and between multiresistant and non-multiresistant collections (CN2D6Contrast, p = 0.04; 100% Se, 50% Sp). CT-based TA can statistically differentiate between different types of infected fluid collections. However, it is unclear which of the fluids' micro or macroscopic features are reflected by the texture parameters. In addition, this cohort is used as a training cohort for the imaging algorithm, with further validation cohorts being required to confirm the changes detected by the algorithm.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several computed tomographic (CT) imaging features have been proposed to describe the infection of postoperative abdominal fluid collections; however, these features are vague, and there is a significant overlap between infected and non-infected collections. We assessed the role of textural parameters as additional diagnostic tools for distinguishing between infected and non-infected peritoneal collections in patients operated for gastric cancer. METHODS: From 527 patients operated for gastric cancer, we retrospectively selected 82 cases with intraperitoneal collections who underwent CT exams. The fluid component was analyzed through a novel method (texture analysis); different patterns of pixel intensity and distribution were extracted and processed through a dedicated software (MaZda). A univariate analysis comparing the parameters of texture analysis between the two groups was performed. Afterwards, a multivariate analysis was performed for the univariate statistically significant parameters. RESULTS: The study included 82 patients with bacteriologically verified infected (n=40) and noninfected (n=42) intraperitoneal effusions. The univariate analysis evidenced statistically significant differences between all the parameters involved. The multivariate analysis highlighted 10 parameters as being statistically significant, adjusted to Bonferroni correction. CONCLUSIONS: Our evidence supports the fact that textural analysis can be used as a complementary diagnostic tool for the detection of infected fluid collections after gastric cancer surgery. Further studies are required to validate the accuracy of this method.

Patients with cancer are a high-priority population for COVID-19 vaccination, as per guideline recommendations. The present cross-sectional study was performed to assess the perception of patients with cancer from Romania regarding COVID-19 vaccines. The study included 932 patients with solid and hematologic malignancies. This was a multicenter study including 12 oncology centers located in Western and Northwestern Romania. Between December 2021 and January 2022, patients with cancer completed an individual paper questionnaire regarding acceptance of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, type of vaccine, side effects and source of information. During the first year of the vaccination campaign in Romania, 58.05% (541/932) of the investigated patients received COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccination rate was highest in the 61-70 year age group (61.22%). The most frequently used vaccine was Pfizer-BioNTech (72%). There was a statistically significant association between the rate of vaccination and the area of residence and level of education (P<0.001), with rural residence and a lower level of education being predictive factors for COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy. Patients living in rural areas used non-medical sources (e.g. mass media, social platforms) as their main source of information (53.40%, 204/382), whereas patients living in urban areas (64.90%, 357/550) used predominantly medical sources (e.g. recommendations from oncologists and general practitioners). The main source of information among non-vaccinated patients was mass media (e.g. television, radio); 72.38% vs. 29.67% among vaccinated patients. For the latter, the primary source of information was the recommendations made by oncologists (59.70%) and general practitioners (56.76%). The most commonly reported side effect was injection site pain (20-33% for the first dose and 5-27% for the second dose). In conclusion, the present study confirmed that patients with cancer may be reluctant to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, mainly due to the fear of its potential side effects. Although there is scientific evidence to support the efficacy and safety of vaccines, the primary source of information for patients may affect vaccine uptake, thus affecting the efforts to stop the pandemic. Furthermore, the present study revealed that non-vaccinated patients preferred mass media as their main source of information, whereas vaccinated patients relied on the recommendations made by oncologists or general practitioners.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is frequently encountered in ENT practice; however, there are no guidelines regarding its management. This study aims to analyse the results of endoscopic sinus surgery versus dental treatment in ODS. Additionally, we aim to demonstrate the benefit of associating endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) to surgical closure of chronic oroantral fistulas (OAF) by comparing mean time to healing in patients who opted or not for concurrent ESS. METHODS: Records of patients with ODS were reviewed. Group one consisted of patients with ODS caused by periapical pathology undergoing either endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) or dental treatment. Resolution of ODS was considered treatment success and was compared between the two treatment strategies. Group two included patients with ODS and associated chronic oroantral communication. Time to healing was compared between patients undergoing OAF closure alone versus patients receiving associated ESS, using the Log-Rank test to correlate Kaplan-Meier curves. RESULTS: 25 patients from a total of 45 in group one underwent dental treatment alone, and 20 opted for exclusive ESS treatment. The failure rate was 40% for patients treated with ESS compared to 4% (one patient) for dental treatment. ODS resolved in all patients in the second group, but the mean time to healing was half (10 days) when ESS was complementary to OAF closure. CONCLUSION: The present study represents the first estimator of the role ESS plays in OAF treatment. Nonetheless, it provides proof of the importance of first addressing dental problems in odontogenic sinusitis.
RESUMEN
Music has been proven to have therapeutic potential in neurological disorders, especially Parkinson's disease (PD), since rhythmic auditory cueing can partially replace the progressive loss of rhythmicity and automaticity. Several reports have highlighted improvements in motor outcomes in PD patients undergoing music therapy, but only a few studies have evaluated non-motor outcomes, such as quality of life (QoL), which deteriorates with disease progression. The current pilot study aims to examine the effects of a multimodal rehabilitation program centered on physical therapy combined with listening to music on self-reported QoL in people with PD, compared to the same rehabilitation program alone. The study was conducted on patients with idiopathic PD who attended a specific rehabilitation program with a duration of 2.5 h daily for 14 days. The patients were divided into the study group (16 patients), who listened to background music during the rehabilitation program sessions, and the control group who did not listen to music during sessions. The patients were assessed using the self-report Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) at the beginning of the program and 1 month after its initiation. The patients in the study group registered greater improvements in five of the eight areas of life assessed by PDQ-39 compared to the control group. In conclusion, listening to music combined with a multimodal rehabilitation program centered on physical therapy may be beneficial for the patients' quality of life.
