RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: Using ultrasound (US) scanning to examine the correlation between increase of common fibular nerve's (CFN) cross sectional area (CSA) and functional impairment of foot dorsiflexor muscles as an early sign of peripheral neuropathy. DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. SETTING: In-patient rehabilitation unit between November 2020 and July 2021. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-six inpatients who underwent prolonged hospitalization in intensive care units (ICUs) and were diagnosed with critical illness myopathy and polyneuropathy after SARS-COV-2 infection (N=26). Physical examination and US scanning of the CFN and EMG/ENG were carried out on each patient. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): CFN's CSA at the peroneal head. RESULTS: We verified a significant increase in the CSA of the CFN measured at the peroneal head in more than 90% of the nerves tested. A cut off value of CFN's CSA of 0.20 cm was used to identify pathologic nerves. No correlations with other variables (body mass index, ICU days) were found. CONCLUSION: US scanning of the CFN appears to be an early and specific test in the evaluation of CPN's abnormalities in post COVID-19 patients. US scanning is a reproducible, cost effective, safe, and easily administered bedside tool to diagnose a loss of motor function when abnormalities in peripheral nerves are present.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury represents one of the main disorders affecting players, especially in contact sports. Even though several approaches based on artificial intelligence have been developed to allow the quantification of ACL injury risk, their applicability in training sessions compared with the clinical scale is still an open question. We proposed a machine-learning approach to accomplish this purpose. Thirty-nine female basketball players were enrolled in the study. Leg stability, leg mobility and capability to absorb the load after jump were evaluated through inertial sensors and optoelectronic bars. The risk level of athletes was computed by the Landing Error Score System (LESS). A comparative analysis among nine classifiers was performed by assessing the accuracy, F1-score and goodness. Five out nine examined classifiers reached optimum performance, with the linear support vector machine achieving an accuracy and F1-score of 96 and 95%, respectively. The feature importance was computed, allowing us to promote the ellipse area, parameters related to the load absorption and the leg mobility as the most useful features for the prediction of anterior cruciate ligament injury risk. In addition, the ellipse area showed a strong correlation with the LESS score. The results open the possibility to use such a methodology for predicting ACL injury.

The possibility of measuring predictive factors to discriminate athletes at higher risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury still represents an open research question. We performed an observational study with thirteen female basketball players who performed monopodalic jumps and single-leg squat tests. One of them suffered from an ACL injury after the first test session. Data gathered from twelve participants, who did not suffer from ACL injury, were used for a reliability analysis. Parameters related to leg stability, load absorption capability and leg mobility showed good-to-excellent reliability. Path length, root mean square of the acceleration and leg angle with respect to the vertical axis revealed themselves as possible predictive factors to identify athletes at higher risk. Results confirm that six months after reconstruction represents the correct time for these athletes to return to playing. Furthermore, the training of leg mobility and load absorption capability could allow athletes to reduce the probability of new injuries.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effects of a nutraceutical composed (Xinepa®) combined with extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic fields in the carpal tunnel syndrome. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty-one patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were randomized into group 1-A (N=16) (nutraceutical + extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic fields) and group 2-C (n=15) (placebo + extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic fields). The dietary supplement with nutraceutical was twice daily for one month in the 1-A group and both groups received extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic fields at the level of the carpal tunnel 3 times per week for 12 sessions. The Visual Analogue Scale for pain, the Symptoms Severity Scale and Functional Severity Scale of the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire were used at pre-treatment (T0), after the end of treatment (T1) and at 3 months post-treatment (T2). [Results] At T1 and T2 were not significant differences in outcome measures between the two groups. In group 1-A a significant improvement in the scales were observed at T1 and T2. In group 2-C it was observed only at T1. [Conclusion] Significant clinical effects from pre-treatment to the end of treatment were shown in both groups. Only in group 1-A they were maintained at 3 months post-treatment.
RESUMEN
The use of exergame for balance competencies was recently explored in women affected by balance ability reduction with non-conclusive results. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of a supervised exergame performed with the Wii Fit® compared to conventional exercises on balance function, quality of life, fear of fall and well-being in women with bone loss. Thirty-eight female participants aged over 65 years, with a bone loss condition, were enrolled and random allocated in the Wii group or control group. Subject enrolled in Wii group performed a balance training with a Wii Fit supervised by a physiotherapist (1 h, 2 days per week, during 8 weeks) while in control subjects performed the same amount of conventional balance exercises. Subject enrolled in experimental group showed significantly higher scores in terms of Berg Balance Scale (p = 0.027). In SF-36 scores, a significant difference was reported for physical activity score after treatment (p = 0.031). Fear of falling and the psychological scales were not significantly different between the two groups. In women with bone loss condition, a supervised Wii Fit training has shown better efficacy in improving balance performance with respect to conventional balance exercises.

Spinal pain is recognized as the most common cause of disability, work absenteeism and need of healthcare services worldwide. Although many strategies have been developed for conservative treatment of spinal pain, its increasing prevalence diagnosis highlights the need for new treatments. Oxygen-ozone (O2-O3) therapy is considered to be an alternative therapy due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. This retrospective study evaluated the effects of O2-O3 intramuscular paravertebral injections in 76 patients with chronic neck pain or low back pain, in terms of pain and disability reduction, quality of life improvement, and analgesic drug intake. Patients were evaluated before, at the end of the treatment, and at 1, 3 and 6 months after the last treatment, using Numeric Rating Scale, Neck Disability Index or Oswestry Disability Index, and Short Form-12 Health Survey. There were significant beneficial effects of O2-O3 therapy in reducing pain and disability reduction and improving quality of life during the 6-month follow-up period. O2-O3 therapy was associated with a reduction in analgesic drug intake at each assessment. Our results allow us not only to support treatment with O2-O3 intramuscular paravertebral injections as a safe and beneficial treatment for chronic low back pain, but also to consider it as a valuable conservative therapy for patients with chronic neck pain.

BACKGROUND: The single-leg squat (SLS) is a safe and widespread functional test commonly performed in the mid-stages of rehabilitation after severe knee injuries. The use of reliable objective measures has been advocated to improve the quality of SLS assessment. The aim of this study was to describe a qualitative whole-body scoring system based on two-dimensional (2D) video analysis during SLS test and validate it against three-dimensional (3D) kinetics and kinematics. METHODS: Thirty-four competitive football (soccer) players performed a series of SLS tasks. 3D kinematics and kinetics were collected through infrared cameras, and 2D video analysis was performed through a scoring system with sub-scores ranging from 0/2 (non-adequate movement) to 2/2 (adequate movement) based on frontal and lateral planes objective measurements. 3D kinematics and kinetics were grouped according to the results of the 2D evaluation and compared through the analysis of variance (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Higher hip adduction, hip internalrotation, and knee valgus collapse were found in trials rated 0/2 or 1/2 compared with theone rated 2/2 in the limb stability score. Hip flexion and hip/knee moment ratio were lower in those scoring 0/2 comparedwith those scoring 2/2 in the movement strategy criterion. A low total score was associated with higherknee valgus collapse and lower hip/knee extensor moment ratio. Compensatory strategieswere found in frontal plane scores. CONCLUSIONS: The 2D scoring system described was strongly associated with kinematics and kinetics from gold-standard 3D motion capture and might represent a valid tool to describe the movement quality of an SLS task.

OBJECTIVES: Functional surgery (FS) is often used to correct congenital or acquired deformities in neurological patients. Along with functional results, short- and medium-term patient satisfaction should always be considered a key goal of surgery and rehabilitation. The aim of this study is to assess the short to medium-term satisfaction of patients who underwent FS and its correlation with perceived improvements. METHODS: Invitation to an anonymous online survey was sent via e-mail to all neurological adult patients or caregivers of children who underwent lower or upper limb FS over the 2018-2020 period. The survey investigated patients' satisfaction with the surgery and the variation in pain, ADLs, level of independence, body image, self-esteem, social interaction skills, participation in social events, leisure activities and sports, and use of orthoses or walking aids. Descriptive data analysis was performed. Correlations were assessed using Kendall's tau. RESULTS: 122 out of 324 adults and 53 out of 163 children's caregivers filled out the questionnaire, with a response rate approaching 40%. Eighty-three percent of adult respondents and 87% of the children's caregivers were satisfied or very satisfied in the short and medium terms and reported their expectations had been met. Satisfaction was significantly correlated (p < 0.01) with improvements in functional abilities, social participation, self-esteem, and pain reduction. Half of the adults and 40% of children stopped using their orthoses or replaced them with lighter ones. Dissatisfaction and worsened conditions were reported by <10% of the respondents. CONCLUSION: According to patients and caregivers, FS was satisfactory in the short and medium terms, following improvements in all the ICF domains for most patients.
In this study, we studied the satisfaction of patients with neurological diseases and their caregivers about two years after having undergone surgery to correct lower and/or upper limb deformities. We mailed a specifically designed survey to adult patients and caregivers of children who had surgery at our hospital. The questionnaire asked about how satisfied they were with the surgery and if they felt any improvements in different domains: meeting previous expectations, pain level, daily activities, being autonomous, body image, self-esteem, social interaction, participation in social events, leisure activities, and the use of orthoses or walking aids. About 40% of the patients we contacted filled out the questionnaire. Most of them said they were happy with the results obtained and felt their pre-surgical expectations had been met. Satisfaction was associated with improvements in functional abilities, social participation, self-esteem, and lessening of pain. Many patients also stopped using orthoses or switched to lighter ones. Only a few people said they were not happy or felt worse after the surgery. These findings highlight the positive impact of surgery on patient well-being and motor abilities.
RESUMEN
The supraspinatus tendon is one of the most involved tendons in the development of shoulder pain. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has been recognized as a valid and safe treatment. Sometimes the symptoms cannot be relieved, or a relapse develops, affecting the patient's quality of life. Therefore, a prediction protocol could be a powerful tool aiding our clinical decisions. An artificial neural network was run, in particular a multilayer perceptron model incorporating input information such as the VAS and Constant-Murley score, administered at T0 and at T1 after six months. It showed a model sensitivity of 80.7%, and the area under the ROC curve was 0.701, which demonstrates good discrimination. The aim of our study was to identify predictive factors for minimal clinically successful therapy (MCST), defined as a reduction of ≥40% in VAS score at T1 following ESWT for chronic non-calcific supraspinatus tendinopathy (SNCCT). From the male gender, we expect greater and more frequent clinical success. The more severe the patient's initial condition, the greater the possibility that clinical success will decrease. The Constant and Murley score, Roles and Maudsley score, and VAS are not just evaluation tools to verify an improvement; they are also prognostic factors to be taken into consideration in the assessment of achieving clinical success. Due to the lower clinical improvement observed in older patients and those with worse clinical and functional scales, it would be preferable to also provide these patients with the possibility of combined treatments. The ANN predictive model is reasonable and accurate in studying the influence of prognostic factors and achieving clinical success in patients with chronic non-calcific tendinopathy of the supraspinatus treated with ESWT.
RESUMEN
Background: Over one billion people worldwide suffer from neurological conditions that cause mobility impairments, often persisting despite rehabilitation. Chronic neurological disease (CND) patients who lack access to continuous rehabilitation face gradual functional decline. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) provides a comprehensive framework for assessing these patients. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of a non-hospitalized neuromotor rehabilitation project for CND patients in Italy using the Barthel Index (BI) as the primary outcome measure. The rehabilitation was administered through an Individual Rehabilitation Plan (IRP), tailored by a multidisciplinary team and coordinated by a physiatrist. The IRP involved an initial comprehensive assessment, individualized therapy administered five days a week, and continuous adjustments based on patient progress. The secondary objectives include assessing mental status and sensory and communication functions, and identifying predictive factors for BI improvement using an artificial neural network (ANN). Methods: A retrospective observational study of 128 CND patients undergoing a rehabilitation program between 2018 and 2023 was conducted. Variables included demographic data, clinical assessments (BI, SPMSQ, and SVaMAsc), and ICF codes. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, linear regressions, and ANN to identify predictors of BI improvement. Results: Significant improvements in the mean BI score were observed from admission (40.28 ± 29.08) to discharge (42.53 ± 30.02, p < 0.001). Patients with severe mobility issues showed the most difficulty in transfers and walking, as indicated by the ICF E codes. Females, especially older women, experienced more cognitive decline, affecting rehabilitation outcomes. ANN achieved 86.4% accuracy in predicting BI improvement, with key factors including ICF mobility codes and the number of past rehabilitation projects. Conclusions: The ICF mobility codes are strong predictors of BI improvement in CND patients. More rehabilitation sessions and targeted support, especially for elderly women and patients with lower initial BI scores, can enhance outcomes and reduce complications. Continuous rehabilitation is essential for maintaining progress in CND patients.
RESUMEN
Background: Lateral epicondylitis of the elbow, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by pain and degeneration of the common extensor tendon. Despite various treatments, optimal management remains debated. Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of focal extracorporeal shockwave therapy (F-ESWT) alone versus a combination of focal and radial pressure waves (F-ESWT+R-PW) in treating chronic lateral epicondylitis. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 45 patients diagnosed with chronic lateral epicondylitis divided into two groups based on the treatment received: group A (F-ESWT, n = 23) and group B (F-ESWT+R-PW, n = 22). Both groups underwent three weekly sessions of their respective treatments. Patients were also given a home exercise protocol. Primary outcomes were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain and the Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE) for pain and functional impairment at baseline (T0), 4 weeks (T1), 12 weeks (T2), and 24 weeks (T3) post-treatment. Secondary outcomes included grip strength and ultrasonographic measurements of common extensor tendon (CET) thickness and vascularization. Results: Significant improvements in VAS and PRTEE scores were observed in both groups at all follow-up points. Group B showed greater pain reduction at T1 (VAS: 3.0 ± 1.6 vs. 4.43 ± 1.47; p < 0.005) and T2 (VAS: p < 0.030) compared to group A. Functional outcomes (PRTEE) also favored group B at T1 (p < 0.030) and in the pain section at T2 (p < 0.020). Grip strength improved similarly in both groups. CET thickness showed no significant differences at T3. Vascularization decreased significantly in both groups, with a non-significant trend favoring group B. Conclusions: The combined F-ESWT+R-PW therapy proved more effective than F-ESWT alone in the short- to mid-term management of chronic lateral epicondylitis, significantly enhancing pain reduction and functional outcomes. The combination of focal and radial pressure waves offers a superior therapeutic approach, leveraging the distinct mechanisms of each modality for better clinical results. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and establish long-term efficacy.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Neuropathic mechanisms largely contribute to radicular Low Back Pain (LBP) and an increase in oxidative stress is recognized as one of the possible causes of nerve damage, inducing axonal degeneration and myelin degradation of nerve fibers. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether a combination of nutraceutical supplements and oxygen-ozone (O2-O3) therapy might reduce disability and improve clinical effects of pharmacological therapy in patients with acute radicular LBP. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective, open-label, comparative observational study approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Sapienza University of Rome (RS 6285/2021). SETTING: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit of Sant'Andrea Hospital. METHODS: Within the scope of this study, 62 patients with acute radicular LBP diagnosed with disc herniation were assigned into 4 groups. The first group was assigned pharmacological therapy (n = 16), the second group was assigned pharmacological therapy and nutraceutical supplements (n = 15), the third group was assigned pharmacological therapy and O2-O3 therapy (n = 15), and the fourth group was assigned pharmacological therapy, nutraceutical supplements, and O2-O3therapy (n = 16). All patients who participated in the study were evaluated at the beginning of the study, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks (T2) after the beginning of treatment using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS-11), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and 12-item Short-Form Health Survey. Opioid analgesic intake was noted from baseline to end of treatment (T2). RESULTS: In each group was observed a statistically significant difference for all measures compared to the baseline. At the T2 evaluation time between groups for the Mann-Whitney U test, a statistically significant difference was found: in the ODI scale between groups B and A (P = 0.004), groups C and A (P < 0.001), and groups D and A (P < 0.001); in the NRS-11 between groups B and A (P = 0.017), groups C and A (P = 0.002), and groups D and A (P < 0.001); in the 12-item Physical Component Summary score between groups B and A (P = 0.003), groups C and A (P = 0.002), and groups D and A (P < 0.001), while no significant differences between groups were observed in the 12-item Mental Component Summary score. The average days of opioid usage were similar in the 4 groups (8.33 in group A, 8.33 in group B, 8.33 in group C, and 8.75 in group D). However, the percentage of patients requiring adjuvant opioid therapy differed remarkably: 60% in group A, 40% in group B, 20% in group C, and 25% in group D. LIMITATIONS: A small number of patients were recruited, and we did not perform long-term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports a multimodal approach combining nutraceutical supplements and O2-O3 therapy with pharmacological therapy in the treatment of acute radicular LBP secondary to disc herniation. The combination of neurotrophic and antioxidant therapies represents an etiopathogenetic approach, not purely symptomatic, that reduces symptomatology and avoids progression of the nerve damage.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer in women. Oxidative stress may contribute to cancer etiology through several mechanisms. A large body of evidence indicates that physical activity (PA) has positive effects on different aspects of BC evolution, including mitigation of negative effects induced by medical treatment. With the aim to verify the capacity of PA to counteract negative effects of BC treatment on systemic redox homeostasis in postsurgery female BC patients, we have examined the modulation of circulating levels of oxidative stress and inflammation markers. Moreover, we evaluated the impacts on physical fitness and mental well-being by measuring functional parameters, body mass index, body composition, health-related quality of life (QoL), and fatigue. Our investigation revealed that PA was effective in maintaining plasma levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and tGSH, as well as peripheral blood mononuclear cells' (PBMCs) mRNA levels of SOD1 and heat-shock protein 27. Moreover, we found a significant decrease in plasma interleukin-6 (≈0.57 ± 0.23-fold change, p < 0.05) and increases in both interleukin-10 (≈1.15 ± 0.35-fold change, p < 0.05) and PBMCs' mRNA level of SOD2 (≈1.87 ± 0.36-fold change, p < 0.05). Finally, PA improves functional parameters (6 min walking test, ≈+6.50%, p < 0.01; Borg, ≈-58.18%, p < 0.01; sit-and-reach, ≈+250.00%, p < 0.01; scratch right, ≈-24.12%, and left, ≈-18.81%, p < 0.01) and body composition (free fat mass, ≈+2.80%, p < 0.05; fat mass, ≈-6.93%, p < 0.05) as well as the QoL (physical function, ≈+5.78%, p < 0.05) and fatigue (cognitive fatigue, ≈-60%, p < 0.05) parameters. These results suggest that a specific PA program not only is effective in improving functional and anthropometric parameters but may also activate cellular responses through a multitude of actions in postsurgery BC patients undergoing adjuvant therapy. These may include modulation of gene expression and protein activity and impacting several signaling pathways/biological activities involved in tumor-cell growth; metastasis; and inflammation, as well as moderating distress symptoms known to negatively affect QoL.

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) may exert beneficial effects in avascular necrosis of femoral head (AVNFH). PATIENTS: The current study evaluated the effectiveness of ESWT in reducing pain and in slowing down the progression of bone damage in 36 patients with unilateral AVNFH of stage Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) I, II and III. At the beginning of the study, 10 hips were classified as stage I, 11 as stage II and 15 as stage III. Each treatment cycle included four sessions, with 2,400 impulses each administered at 0.50 mJ/mm(2), at 48-72 h intervals. Follow-up examinations were scheduled at 3, 6, 12 and then 24 months. METHOD: Clinical assessments included assessment of pain scores, Harris Hip Scores and Roles and Maudsley score. Plain radiographs and magnetic resonances of the hip were used to evaluate the size of the lesion, the extent of collapse of subchondral bone, and degenerative changes of the hip joint. RESULTS: Patients from ARCO stage I group and stage II group achieved significantly better results than patients from ARCO stage III group at all follow-up time points (p < 0.005). During the follow-up period, 10 of the 15 stage III ARCO patients received an arthroplasty. ARCO stages I and II lesions were unchanged on radiographs and on magnetic resonance images. CONCLUSION: ESWT in ARCO stages I and II may help to prevent progression of the area of avascular necrosis and manage pain.

Neuroinflammation is an emerging therapeutic target in chronic degenerative and autoimmune diseases, such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis. Mast cells (MCs) play a key role in the homeostasis of joints and the activation of MCs induces the release of a huge number of mediators, which fuel the fire of neuroinflammation. Particularly, synovial MCs release substances which accelerate the degradation of the extra-cellular matrix causing morphological joint changes and cartilage damage and inducing the proliferation of synovial fibroblasts, angiogenesis, and the sprouting of sensory nerve fibers, which mediate chronic pain. Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a well-known MCs modulator, but in osteoarthritic joints, its levels are significantly reduced. Adelmidrol, a synthetic derivate of azelaic acid belonging to the ALIAmides family, is a PEA enhancer. Preclinical and clinical investigations showed that the intra-articular administration of Adelmidrol significantly reduced MC infiltration, pro-inflammatory cytokine release, and cartilage degeneration. The combination of 1% high molecular weight hyaluronic acid and 2% Adelmidrol has been effectively used for knee osteoarthritis and, a significant improvement in analgesia and functionality has been recorded.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) could affect the behavior of primary cultured human tenocytes over a 12-day period. METHODS: In this controlled laboratory study, primary human tenocytes were established from semitendinosus tendons collected from 3 patients undergoing arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Cell viability, overall cell morphology, cell proliferation, and collagen synthesis following ESWT have been evaluated. RESULTS: ESWT significantly interferes with the overall cell morphology, by impairing dedifferentiation of the cells. Furthermore, a shock wave-mediated growth-promoting effect was measured by the MTT (tetrazolium) colorimetric assay and by the proliferation marker Ki67. Lastly, a significant increase in collagen (mainly type I) synthesis by ESWT-tenocytes compared with control cells was found. CONCLUSIONS: Shock wave treatment promoted cell growth and collagen synthesis of primary cultured human tenocytes. The clinical benefits of ESWT may be ascribed to an increased efficiency of tendon repair after injury.

Facet joint osteoarthritis is the most prevalent source of facet joint pain and represents a significant cause of low back pain. Oxygen-ozone therapy has been shown to have positive results in acute and chronic spinal degeneration diseases and it could be a safe and efficacious alternative to traditional facet joint conservative treatments. This review article explains the interventional facet joint management with ultrasound-guided oxygen-ozone therapy, providing an anatomy/sonoanatomy overview of lumbar facet joints and summarizing the potential mechanism of action of oxygen-ozone in the treatment of facet joint osteoarthritis, not yet fully understood.

Lymphoma treatments can produce adverse effects leading to a reduced quality-of-life (QoL). Besides, in patients ≥65years, it can promote an accelerated geriatric decay. We conducted a prospective study on supervised Exercise-Training (ET), in consecutive, patients aged 18-80years, during anti-lymphoma treatments.16/30 (53%), median-age = 65.5y, participated to the ET sessions, this was the Interventional Group (IG); 14/30 (47%), median-age = 63y, were the Reference Group (RG). Both groups participated to the fitness and the QoL assessments, at baseline (T0), 3-months (T1) and 6-months (T2) after the start of chemotherapy. The adherence to the ET program was 50% (95% CI:36-64%). The IG showed substantial improvements compared to the CG in cardiorespiratory fitness (Cooper test) at both T1 and T2 and in all the functional domain of the QoL questionnaire (QLQ-C30) at T2. This study showed ET, during chemotherapy, is feasible and safe, even in patients ≥65 years. Furthermore, it may improve the provision of care.

This pilot study explores the effects of a post-operative physical exercise program on the quality of life (QoL) and functional and nutritional parameters of patients that underwent laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, compared to usual care alone. The intervention group (IG) attended a 2-month-long supervised and combined exercise-training program during the post-operative period. Both IG and control group (CG) participated in the QoL, functional, and nutritional assessments before exercise training (T0), 2 months after the beginning of the exercise (end of treatment) (T1), and 2 (T2) and 4 (T3) months from the end of treatment. Eleven patients with colorectal cancer that underwent laparoscopic surgery were enrolled (six intervention; five control). The IG showed significant improvements compared to the CG in "Physical functioning" (PF2) (p = 0.030), "Cognitive functioning" (CF) (p = 0.018), and "Fatigue" (FA) (p = 0.017) of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life-C30 Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) at T1; in SMWT (p = 0.022) at T1; in PF2 (p = 0.018) and FA (p = 0.045) of EORTC QLQ-C30 at T2, in phase angle (PhA) of bioelectrical impedance analysis (p = 0.022) at T3. This pilot study shows that a post-operative, combined, and supervised physical exercise program may have positive effects in improving the QoL, functional capacity, and nutritional status in patients that undergo laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.
