RESUMEN

The upregulation of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) plays a crucial role in facilitating cancer cells to evade immune surveillance through immunosuppression. However, the precise regulatory mechanisms of PD-L1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain undefined. The correlation between PD-L1 and ubiquitin-like molecules (UBLs) was studied using sequencing data from 20 HCC patients in our center, combined with TCGA data. Specifically, the association between FAT10 and PD-L1 was further validated at both the protein and mRNA levels in HCC tissues from our center. Subsequently, the effect of FAT10 on tumor progression and immune suppression was examined through both in vivo and in vitro experiments. Utilizing sequencing data, qPCR, and Western blotting assays, we confirmed that FAT10 was highly expressed in HCC tissues and positively correlated with PD-L1 expression. Additionally, in vitro experiments demonstrated that the overexpression of FAT10 fostered the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HCC cells. Furthermore, the overexpression of FAT10 in HCC cells led to an increase in PD-L1 expression, resulting in the inhibition of T cell proliferation and the enhancement of HCC cell resistance to T cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Moreover, in vivo experiments utilizing the C57BL/6 mouse model revealed that overexpression of FAT10 effectively suppressed the infiltration of CD8 + GZMB + and CD8 + Ki67 + T cells, as well as reduced serum levels of TNF-α and IFN-γ. Mechanistically, we further identified that FAT10 upregulates PD-L1 expression via activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, but not in a ubiquitin-like modification. In conclusion, our findings indicate that FAT10 promotes immune evasion of HCC via upregulating PD-L1 expression, suggesting its potential as a novel target to enhance the efficiency of immunotherapy in HCC.

Modulating the electronic properties of transition metal sites in photocatalysts at the atomic level is essential for achieving high-activity carbon dioxide photoreduction (CO2PR). An electronic strategy is herein proposed to engineer In-d-band center of InVO4 by incorporating MnOx nanoparticles and oxygen vacancies (VO) into holey InVO4 nanobelts (MnOx/VO-InVO4), which synergistically modulates the In-d-band center to a moderate level and consequently leads to high-efficiency CO2PR. The MnOx/VO-InVO4 catalyst with optimized electronic property exhibits a single carbon evolution rate of up to 145.3 µmol g-1 h-1 and a carbon monoxide (CO) product selectivity of 92.6%, coming out in front of reported InVO4-based materials. It is discovered that the modulated electronic property favors the interaction between the In sites and their intermediates, which thereby improves the thermodynamics and kinetics of the CO2PR-to-CO reaction. This work not only demonstrates the effective engineering of the d orbital of the low-coordination In atoms to promote CO2PR, but also paves the way for the application of tuning d-band center to develop high-efficiency catalysts.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the microbial variations and biomarkers in the vaginal and oral environments of patients with human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer (CC) and to develop novel prediction models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 164 samples collected from both the vaginal tract and oral subgingival plaque of 82 women. The participants were divided into four distinct groups based on their vaginal and oral samples: the control group (Z/KZ, n = 22), abortion group (AB/KAB, n = 17), HPV-infected group (HP/KHP, n = 21), and cervical cancer group (CC/KCC, n = 22). Microbiota analysis was conducted using full-length 16S rDNA gene sequencing with the PacBio platform. RESULTS: The vaginal bacterial community in the Z and AB groups exhibited a relatively simple structure predominantly dominated by Lactobacillus. However, CC group shows high abundances of anaerobic bacteria and alpha diversity. Biomarkers such as Bacteroides, Mycoplasma, Bacillus, Dialister, Porphyromonas, Anaerococcus, and Prevotella were identified as indicators of CC. Correlations were established between elevated blood C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and local/systemic inflammation, pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion, which contribute to unevenness in the vaginal microenvironment. The altered microbial diversity in the CC group was confirmed by amino acid metabolism. Oral microbial diversity exhibited an inverse pattern to that of the vaginal microbiome, indicating a unique relationship. The microbial diversity of the KCC group was significantly lower than that of the KZ group, indicating a link between oral health and cancer development. Several microbes, including Fusobacterium, Campylobacter, Capnocytophaga, Veillonella, Streptococcus, Lachnoanaerobaculum, Propionibacterium, Prevotella, Lactobacillus, and Neisseria, were identified as CC biomarkers. Moreover, periodontal pathogens were associated with blood CRP levels and oral hygiene conditions. Elevated oral microbial amino acid metabolism in the CC group was closely linked to the presence of pathogens. Positive correlations indicated a synergistic relationship between vaginal and oral bacteria. CONCLUSION: HPV infection and CC impact both the vaginal and oral microenvironments, affecting systemic metabolism and the synergy between bacteria. This suggests that the use of oral flora markers is a potential screening tool for the diagnosis of CC.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We aimed to develop a Transformer-based deep learning (DL) network for prognostic stratification in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing RFA. METHODS: A Swin Transformer DL network was trained to establish associations between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) datasets and the ground truth of microvascular invasion (MVI) based on 696 surgical resection (SR) patients with solitary HCC ≤3 cm, and was validated in an external cohort (n = 180). The multiphase MRI-based DL risk outputs using an optimal threshold of .5 was employed as a MVI classifier for prognosis stratification in the RFA cohort (n = 180). RESULTS: Over 90% of all enrolled patients exhibited hepatitis B virus infection. Liver cirrhosis was significantly more prevalent in the RFA cohort compared to the SR cohort (72.2% vs. 44.1%, p < .001). The MVI risk outputs exhibited good performance (area under the curve values = .938 and .883) for predicting MVI in the training and validation cohort, respectively. The RFA patients at high risk of MVI classified by the MVI classifier demonstrated significantly lower recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival rates at 1, 3 and 5 years compared to those classified as low risk (p < .001). Multivariate cox regression modelling of a-fetoprotein > 20 ng/mL [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.53; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.02-2.33, p = .047], high risk of MVI (HR = 3.76; 95% CI: 2.40-5.88, p < .001) and unfavourable tumour location (HR = 2.15; 95% CI: 1.40-3.29, p = .001) yielded a c-index of .731 (bootstrapped 95% CI: .667-.778) for evaluating RFS after RFA. Among the three risk factors, MVI was the most powerful predictor for intrahepatic distance recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed MVI classifier can serve as a valuable imaging biomarker for prognostic stratification in early-stage HCC patients undergoing RFA.

BACKGROUND: Some glucoside drugs can be transported via intestinal glucose transporters (IGTs), and the presence of carbohydrate excipients in pharmaceutical formulations may influence the absorption of them. This study, using gastrodin as probe drug, aimed to explore the effects of fructose, lactose, and arabic gum on intestinal drug absorption mediated by the glucose transport pathway. METHODS: The influence of fructose, lactose, and arabic gum on gastrodin absorption was assessed via pharmacokinetic experiments and single-pass intestinal perfusion. The expression of sodium-dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1) and sodium-independent glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2) was quantified via RT‒qPCR and western blotting. Alterations in rat intestinal permeability were evaluated through H&E staining, RT‒qPCR, and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Fructose reduced the area under the curve (AUC) and peak concentration (Cmax) of gastrodin by 42.7% and 63.71%, respectively (P < 0.05), and decreased the effective permeability coefficient (Peff) in the duodenum and jejunum by 58.1% and 49.2%, respectively (P < 0.05). SGLT1 and GLUT2 expression and intestinal permeability remained unchanged. Lactose enhanced the AUC and Cmax of gastrodin by 31.5% and 65.8%, respectively (P < 0.05), and increased the Peff in the duodenum and jejunum by 33.7% and 26.1%, respectively (P < 0.05). SGLT1 and GLUT2 levels did not significantly differ, intestinal permeability increased. Arabic gum had no notable effect on pharmacokinetic parameters, SGLT1 or GLUT2 expression, or intestinal permeability. CONCLUSION: Fructose, lactose, and arabic gum differentially affect intestinal drug absorption through the glucose transport pathway. Fructose competitively inhibited drug absorption, while lactose may enhance absorption by increasing intestinal permeability. Arabic gum had no significant influence.

The prevailing theoretical frameworks indicate that depending on the growth conditions, the Bi2WO6(001) surface can manifest in three distinct terminations-DL-O-Bi (DL: double layers), O-Bi, and O-W. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive examination of the interplay between these terminations on Bi2WO6(001) and the 1I-terminated BiOI(001) facet, especially focusing on their impact on the photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6/BiOI heterostructure, applying hybrid functional calculations. The models formulated for this research are designated as Bi2WO6(O-Bi)/BiOI(1I), Bi2WO6(DL-O-Bi)/BiOI(1I), and Bi2WO6(O-W)/BiOI(1I). Our findings reveal that Bi2WO6(O-Bi)/BiOI(1I) shows a type II band alignment, which facilitates the spatial separation of photo-generated electrons and holes. Notably, the Bi2WO6(DL-O-Bi)/BiOI(1I) configuration has the lowest binding energy and results in an S-scheme (or Step-scheme) heterostructure. In contrast to the type II heterostructure, this particular configuration demonstrates enhanced photocatalytic efficiency due to improved photo-generated carrier separation, augmented oxidation capability, and better visible-light absorption. Conversely, Bi2WO6(O-W)/BiOI(1I) presents a type I projected band structure, which is less conducive for the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. In summation, this investigation points out that one could significantly refine the photocatalytic efficacy of not only Bi2WO6/BiOI but also other heterostructure photocatalysts by modulating the coupling of different terminations via precise crystal synthesis or growth conditions.

Given some current speculations and controversies regarding the type of BiOCl/Bi2S3-(001) heterostructure in experiments, it is of great importance to clarify these controversies and further explain the relevant experimental results. In this work, based on first-principles hybrid density functional calculations, it is verified that the BiOCl/Bi2S3-(001) heterostructure is a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst with high photo-generated carrier separation efficiency and strong redox ability that can react with O2 and OH- to produce photocatalytic active species of superoxide ions (˙O2-) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH), respectively. This is consistent with the experimental findings and explains the excellent photocatalytic performance of the BiOCl/Bi2S3-(001) heterostructure in experiments. Besides, excitingly, it is found that the optical absorption, built-in electric field intensity, interlayer recombination probability, hydrogen evolution reaction ability, and the difference in electron-hole mobility are further enhanced via S vacancy introduction in BiOCl/Bi2S3-(001). Therefore, the significant roles of S vacancy in further improving the photocatalytic properties of the BiOCl/Bi2S3-(001) heterostructure are profoundly revealed. This work can provide valuable theoretical insights for designing the superior direct Z-scheme BiOCl/VS-Bi2S3-(001) heterostructure with promising photocatalytic properties.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the potential association between the circadian rhythm of blood pressure and deceleration capacity (DC)/acceleration capacity (AC) in patients with essential hypertension. METHODS: This study included 318 patients with essential hypertension, whether or not they were being treated with anti-hypertensive drugs, who underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Patients were categorized into three groups based on the percentage of nocturnal systolic blood pressure (SBP) dipping: the dipper, non-dipper and reverse dipper groups. Baseline demographic characteristics, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring parameters, Holter recordings (including DC and AC), and echocardiographic parameters were collected. RESULTS: In this study, the lowest DC values were observed in the reverse dipper group, followed by the non-dipper and dipper groups (6.46 ± 2.06 vs. 6.65 ± 1.95 vs. 8.07 ± 1.79 ms, P < .001). Additionally, the AC gradually decreased (-6.32 ± 2.02 vs. -6.55 ± 1.95 vs. -7.80 ± 1.73 ms, P < .001). There was a significant association between DC (r = .307, P < .001), AC (r=-.303, P < .001) and nocturnal SBP decline. Furthermore, DC (ß = 0.785, P = .001) was positively associated with nocturnal SBP decline, whereas AC was negatively associated with nocturnal SBP (ß = -0.753, P = .002). By multivariate logistic regression analysis, deceleration capacity [OR (95% CI): 0.705 (0.594-0.836), p < .001], and acceleration capacity [OR (95% CI): 1.357 (1.141-1.614), p = .001] were identified as independent risk factors for blood pressure nondipper status. The analysis of ROC curves revealed that the area under the curve for DC/AC in predicting the circadian rhythm of blood pressure was 0.711/0.697, with a sensitivity of 73.4%/65.1% and specificity of 66.7%/71.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal DC and AC density were correlated with a blunted decline in nighttime SBP, suggesting a potential association between the circadian rhythm of blood pressure in essential hypertension patients and autonomic nervous dysfunction.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the primary factor contributing to low back pain (LBP). Unlike elderly patients, many young IVDD patients usually have a history of trauma or long-term abnormal stress, which may lead to local inflammatory reaction causing by immune cells, and ultimately accelerates degeneration. Research has shown the significance of M1-type macrophages in IVDD; nevertheless, the precise mechanism and the route by which it influences the function of nucleus pulposus cell (NPC) remain unknown. Utilizing a rat acupuncture IVDD model and an NPC degeneration model induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), we investigated the function of M1 macrophage-derived exosomes (M1-Exos) in IVDD both in vivo and in vitro in this study. We found that M1-Exos enhanced LPS-induced NPC senescence, increased the number of SA-ß-gal-positive cells, blocked the cell cycle, and promoted the activation of P21 and P53. M1-Exos derived from supernatant pretreated with the exosome inhibitor GW4869 reversed this result in vivo and in vitro. RNA-seq showed that Lipocalin2 (LCN2) was enriched in M1-Exos and targeted the NF-κB pathway. The quantity of SA-ß-gal-positive cells was significantly reduced with the inhibition of LCN2, and the expression of P21 and P53 in NPCs was decreased. The same results were obtained in the acupuncture-induced IVDD model. In addition, inhibition of LCN2 promotes the expression of type II collagen (Col-2) and inhibits the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13), thereby restoring the equilibrium of metabolism inside the extracellular matrix (ECM) in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the NF-κB pathway is crucial for regulating M1-Exo-mediated NPC senescence. After the addition of M1-Exos to LPS-treated NPCs, p-p65 activity was significantly activated, while si-LCN2 treatment significantly inhibited p-p65 activity. Therefore, this paper demonstrates that M1 macrophage-derived exosomes have the ability to deliver LCN2, which activates the NF-κB signaling pathway, and exacerbates IVDD by accelerating NPC senescence. This may shed new light on the mechanism of IVDD and bring a fresh approach to IVDD therapy.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical efficacy and feasibility of the surgical treatment of thoracic spinal tuberculosis using one-stage posterior instrumentation, transpedicular debridement, and hemi-interbody and unilateral posterior bone grafting. METHODS: Fifty-six patients with thoracic spinal tuberculosis who underwent surgery performed by a single surgeon between September 2009 and August 2020 were enrolled in this study. Based on data from the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and Cobb angle before surgery, after surgery, and at the most recent follow-up, clinical effectiveness was assessed using statistical analysis. The variables investigated included operating time, blood loss, complications, neurological function, and hemi-interbody fusion. RESULTS: None of the patients experienced significant surgery-associated complications. At the last follow-up, 23 of the 25 patients (92%) with neurological impairment showed improvement. The thoracic kyphotic angle was significantly decreased from 24.1 ± 9.9° to 13.4 ± 8.6° after operation (P < 0.05), and the angle was 14.44 ± 8.8° at final follow-up (P < 0.05). The Visual Analog Scale significantly decreased from 6.7 ± 1.4 preoperatively to 2.3 ± 0.8 postoperatively (P < 0.05) and finally to 1.2 ± 0.7 at the last follow-up (P < 0.05). Bone fusion was confirmed in 56 patients at 3-6 months postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: One-stage posterior transpedicular debridement, hemi-interbody and unilateral posterior bone grafting, and instrumentation are effective and feasible treatment methods for thoracic spinal tuberculosis.

PURPOSE: For the custom-built construction of eye plaques, the iodine (I-125) seeds of different source strengths are recycled in our eye plaque program. To return I-125 seeds to the correct lot, we developed a novel 3D-printed conical plaque QA holder for relative assay for eye plaques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A universal 3D-printed conical plaque holder was designed to accommodate six plaque sizes and fit reproducibly in a well-type dose calibrator. A reproducibility test was used to compare the plaque placement consistency in the holder versus without the holder. Plaque assays were performed for assembled plaques both before implant and after explant. The explant reading was compared with the implant reading adjusted for decay, and the relative error was calculated. The plaque response fraction (PRF) is defined as the fraction of well chamber implant reading over the total seed strength for a plaque. The PRF was aggregated for each individual plaque to confirm the seed lot before implant. RESULTS: The reproducibility test showed the chamber reading's relative standard deviation of 0.40% with the QA holder compared to 0.68% without it. The batch relative assay was performed for 251 plaques. The absolute value of measurement deviation between explant and decay-corrected implant readings is 0.89% ± 0.86% (mean ± standard deviation). The PRFs for individual plaques range from 36.49% to 49.87%, with a maximum standard deviation of 2%. CONCLUSIONS: This novel 3D-printed QA holder provides reproducible setup for assaying assembled eye plaques in a well chamber. Batch relative assay can validate the seed batch used and plaque integrity during the implant without assaying individual seeds, saving valuable physicist time and radiation exposure from seed handling.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of aggravation or occurrence of avascular necrosis (AVN) following hardware removal in surgically treated pediatric femoral neck fractures who achieved radiologic consolidation is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for this complication. METHODS: Seventy-one pediatric (mean age: 9.8±3.9 y) were retrospectively analyzed. Risk factors (age, sex, laterality, severity of initial displacement, type of fracture, time from trauma to reduction, reduction and fixation method, quality of reduction, time required to achieve radiologic union, duration of hardware retention, presence of AVN before hardware removal and follow-up time) were recorded. The severity of AVN was assessed based on radiographs with Ratliff's classification. RESULTS: Following hardware removal, the aggravation/occurrence of AVN was detected in 11 hips (15.5%). Among the 5 hips (7%) with aggravation of AVN, 1 (1.4%) with type II AVN and 3 (4.2%) with type III AVN exhibited aggravation of type I AVN, while the remaining hip (1.4%; type I) showed enlargement of the involved AVN area. Six hips (8.5%) developed AVN following hardware removal: 2 (2.8%) were classified as type I and 4 (5.6%) as type III. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that hardware retention >7 months after union is associated with a decreased rate of aggravation or occurrence of AVN of the femoral neck or head following hardware removal. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of aggravation or occurrence of AVN following hardware removal in surgically treated pediatric femoral neck fractures is 15.5%; hardware retention >7 months after radiologic union may reduce the risk of aggravation or occurrence of AVN of the femoral neck or head postimplant removal. Some glycoside drugs can be transported through intestinal glucose transporters (IGTs). The surfactants used in oral drug preparations can affect the function of transporter proteins. This study aimed to investigate the effect of commonly used surfactants, Poloxamer 188 and Tween 80, on the drug transport capacity of IGTs. Previous studies have shown that gastrodin is the optimal drug substrate for IGTs. Gastrodin was used as a probe drug to evaluate the effect of these two surfactants on intestinal absorption in SD rats through pharmacokinetic and in situ single-pass intestinal perfusion. Then, the effects of the two surfactants on the expression of glucose transporters and tight-junction proteins were examined using RT-PCR and western blotting. Additionally, the effect of surfactants on intestinal permeability was evaluated through hematoxylin-eosin staining. The results found that all experimental for Poloxamer 188 (0.5%, 2.0% and 8.0%) and Tween 80 (0.1% and 2.0%) were not significantly different from those of the blank group. However, the AUC(0-∞) of gastrodin increased by approximately 32% when 0.5% Tween 80 was used. The changes in IGT expression correlated with the intestinal absorption of gastrodin. A significant increase in the expression of IGTs was observed at 0.5% Tween 80. In conclusion, Poloxamer 188 had minimal effect on the drug transport capacity of IGTs within the recommended limits of use. However, the expression of IGTs increased in response to 0.5% Tween 80, which significantly enhanced the drug transport capacity of IGTs. However, 0.1% and 2.0% Tween 80 had no significant effect.

BACKGROUND: The clinical efficacy and safety between liver venous deprivation (LVD) and portal vein embolization (PVE) prior to major hepatectomy is still unclear. METHODS: Studies comparing LVD and PVE were obtained by systemically searching PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library Central databases through 22 December 2023. RESULTS: Ten studies including 588 patients were reviewed. Compared with PVE group, LVD group exhibited an increased liver resection rate (OR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.13-3.15; P = 0.01), a faster KGR (MD, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.31-2.42; P = 0.01), and a shorter time to hepatectomy (MD, -6.66; 95% CI, -8.03 to -5.30; P < 0.0001). The pooled results showed that post-embolization complications (OR, 1.35; 95% CI, 0.66-2.74), overall postoperative complications (OR, 1.09; 95% CI, 0.68-1.75), severe complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ III) (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.43-1.14), and 90-day mortality (OR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.13-1.09) were not significantly different in both groups. LVD group had significantly lower post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) than PVE group (OR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.22-0.91; P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: LVD outperforms PVE regarding liver resection rate and future liver remnant (FLR) hypertrophy and shows comparable safety to PVE. In addition, LVD allowed for major hepatectomy with lower incidence of PHLF.

The prophenoloxidase (PPO) activation and Toll antimicrobial peptide synthesis pathways are two critical immune responses in the insect immune system. The activation of these pathways is mediated by the cascade of serine proteases, which is negatively regulated by serpins. In this study, we identified a typical serpin, BmSerpin-4, in silkworms, whose expression was dramatically up-regulated in the fat body and hemocytes after bacterial infections. The pre-injection of recombinant BmSerpin-4 remarkably decreased the antibacterial activity of the hemolymph and the expression of the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) gloverin-3, cecropin-D, cecropin-E, and moricin in the fat body under Micrococcus luteus and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotype O: 3 (YP III) infection. Meanwhile, the inhibition of systemic melanization, PO activity, and PPO activation by BmSerpin-4 was also observed. Hemolymph proteinase 1 (HP1), serine protease 2 (SP2), HP6, and SP21 were predicted as the candidate target serine proteases for BmSerpin-4 through the analysis of residues adjacent to the scissile bond and comparisons of orthologous genes in Manduca sexta. This suggests that HP1, SP2, HP6, and SP21 might be essential in the activation of the serine protease cascade in both the Toll and PPO pathways in silkworms. Our study provided a comprehensive characterization of BmSerpin-4 and clues for the further dissection of silkworm PPO and Toll activation signaling.

Asphalt pavement, which is mainly made up of the asphalt mixture, exhibits complicated mechanical behaviors under the combined effects of moving vehicle loads and external service environments. Multi-scale numerical simulation can well characterize behaviors of asphalt materials and asphalt pavement, and the essential research progress is systematically summarized from an entire view. This paper reviews extensive research works concerning aspects of the design, characterization, and prediction of performance for asphalt materials and asphalt pavement based on multi-scale numerical simulation. Firstly, full-scale performance modeling on asphalt pavement is discussed from aspects of structural dynamic response, structural and material evaluation, and wheel-pavement interaction. The correlation between asphalt material properties and pavement performance is also analyzed, and so is the hydroplaning phenomenon. Macro- and mesoscale simulations on the mechanical property characterization of the asphalt mixture and its components are then investigated, while virtual proportion design for the asphalt mixture is introduced. Features of two-dimensional and three-dimensional microscale modeling on the asphalt mixture are summarized, followed by molecular dynamics simulation on asphalt binders, aggregates, and their interface, while nanoscale behavior modeling on asphalt binders is presented. Finally, aspects that need more attention concerning this study's topic are discussed, and several suggestions for future investigations are also presented.

In real terrain and dynamic obstacle scenarios, the complexity of the 3D UAV path planning problem greatly increases. Thus, to procure the optimal flight path for UAVs in such scenarios, an augmented Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer, denoted as OQMGTO, is proposed. The proposed OQMGTO algorithm introduces three strategies: combination mutation, quadratic interpolation, and random opposition-based learning, aiming to enhance the ability to timely escape from local optimal path areas and rapidly converge to the global optimal path. Given the flight distance, smoothness, terrain collision, and other five realistic factors of UAVs, specific constraint conditions are proposed to address complex scenarios, aiming to construct a path planning model. By optimizing this model, OQMGTO algorithm solves the path planning problem in complex scenarios. The extensive validation of OQMGTO algorithm on CEC2017 test suite enhances its credibility as a powerful optimization tool. Comparison experiments are conducted in simulated terrain scenarios, including six multi-obstacle terrain scenarios and three dynamic obstacle scenarios. The experimental findings validate OOMGTO algorithm can assist UAV in searching for excellent flight paths, featuring high safety and reliability characteristics, which confirms the superiority of OOMGTO algorithm for path planning in simulated terrain scenarios. Furthermore, in four flight missions carried out in real terrains, OQMGTO algorithm demonstrates superior search performance, planning smooth trajectories without mountain collision.

Exploring efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is vital to developing renewable energy technologies. However, due to the substantial and intricate design space associated with these bifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalysts, their development presents a formidable challenge, resulting in their cost-prohibitive nature in both experimental and computational studies. Herein, using the defect physics method, we systematically investigate the formation energies and bifunctional overpotential (ηBi) of 4d-transition-metal (4d-TM, 4d-TM = Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, and Ag)-doped monolayer supercell g-C3N4 (4d-TM@C54N72) based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Under N-rich and C-rich conditions, we find that the formation energies of RhN@C54N71 (Rh occupation N) and PdN@C54N71 (Pd occupation N) are smaller than that of other 4d-TMN@C54N71 (4d-TM occupation N site); for the 4d-TMint@C54N72 (4d-TM interstitial site occupation), the lowest-formation energy defects are Pdint@C54N72. These results indicate that they have better stabilities. Interestingly, for these formation energy lower systems, Pd0int@C54N72 (ηBi = 1.00 V) and Rh1+N@C54N71 (ηBi = 0.73 V) have ultralow overpotential and can be great candidates for bifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalysts. We find the reason is that adjusting the charge states of 4d-TM@C54N72 can tune the interaction strength between the oxygenated intermediates and the 4d-TM@C54N72, which plays a crucial role in the activity of reactions. Additionally, the data obtained through machine learning (ML) application suggest that the electronegativity (Nm) and bond length of 4d-TM and coordination atoms (dTM-OOH) are primary descriptors characterizing the OER and ORR activities, respectively. The charged defect tuning of the bifunctional OER/ORR activity for 4d-TM@C54N72 would enable electrocatalytic performance optimization and the development of potential electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications.

In order to realize the effective separation of palladium from high-level liquid waste (HLLW), a ligand-supported adsorbent (NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P) was prepared by the impregnation method in a vacuum. The SiO2-P carrier was synthesized by in situ polymerization of divinylbenzene and styrene monomers on a macroporous silica skeleton. The NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P adsorbent was fabricated by impregnating an NTAamide(C8) ligand into the pore of a SiO2-P carrier under a vacuum condition. The adsorption performance of NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P in nitric acid medium has been systematically studied. In a solution of 0.2 M HNO3, the distribution coefficient of Pd on NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P was 1848 mL/g with an adsorption percentage of 90.24%. With the concentration of nitric acid increasing, the adsorption capacity of NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P decreases. Compared to the other 10 potential interfering ions in fission products, NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P exhibited excellent adsorption selectivity for Pd(II). The separation factor (SFPd/other metals > 77.8) is significantly higher than that of similar materials. The interference of NaNO3 had a negligible effect on the adsorption performance of NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P, which maintained above 90%. The adsorption kinetics of Pd(II) adsorption on NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P fits well with the pseudo-second order model. The Sips model is more suitable than the Langmuir and Freundlich model for describing the adsorption behavior. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption of Pd(II) on NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P was a spontaneous, endothermic, and rapid process. NTAamide(C8)/SiO2-P also demonstrated good reusability and economic feasibility.
