RESUMEN

Transposable elements (TEs) contribute to plant evolution, development, and adaptation to environmental changes, but the regulatory mechanisms are largely unknown. RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) is 1 TE regulatory mechanism in plants. Here, we identified that novel ARGONAUTE 1 (AGO1)-binding Tudor domain proteins Precocious dissociation of sisters C/E (PDS5C/E) are involved in 24-nt siRNA production to establish RdDM on TEs in Arabidopsis thaliana. PDS5 family proteins are subunits of the eukaryote-conserved cohesin complex. However, the double mutant lacking angiosperm-specific subfamily PDS5C and PDS5E (pds5c/e) exhibited different developmental phenotypes and transcriptome compared with those of the double mutant lacking eukaryote-conserved subfamily PDS5A and PDS5B (pds5a/b), suggesting that the angiosperm-specific PDS5C/E subfamily has a unique function in angiosperm plants. Proteome and imaging analyses revealed that PDS5C/E interact with AGO1. The pds5c/e double mutant had defects in 24-nt siRNA accumulation and CHH DNA methylation on TEs. In addition, some lncRNAs that accumulated in the pds5c/e mutant were targeted by AGO1-loading 21-nt miRNAs and 21-nt siRNAs. These results indicate that PDS5C/E and AGO1 participate in 24-nt siRNA production for RdDM in the cytoplasm. These findings indicate that angiosperm plants evolved a new regulator, the PDS5C/E subfamily, to control the increase in TEs during angiosperm evolution.

The liverwort Marchantia polymorpha has been utilized as a model for biological studies since the 18th century. In the past few decades, there has been a Renaissance in its utilization in genomic and genetic approaches to investigating physiological, developmental, and evolutionary aspects of land plant biology. The reasons for its adoption are similar to those of other genetic models, e.g. simple cultivation, ready access via its worldwide distribution, ease of crossing, facile genetics, and more recently, efficient transformation, genome editing, and genomic resources. The haploid gametophyte dominant life cycle of M. polymorpha is conducive to forward genetic approaches. The lack of ancient whole-genome duplications within liverworts facilitates reverse genetic approaches, and possibly related to this genomic stability, liverworts possess sex chromosomes that evolved in the ancestral liverwort. As a representative of one of the three bryophyte lineages, its phylogenetic position allows comparative approaches to provide insights into ancestral land plants. Given the karyotype and genome stability within liverworts, the resources developed for M. polymorpha have facilitated the development of related species as models for biological processes lacking in M. polymorpha.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) is rapidly gaining popularity; however, its efficacy for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (NAFLD-HCC) has been not evaluated. The purpose of this study was to compare short- and long-term outcomes between LLR and open liver resection (OLR) among patients with NAFLD-HCC. METHODS: We used a single-institution database to analyze data for patients who underwent LLR or OLR for NAFLD-HCC from January 2007 to December 2022. We performed propensity score-matching analyses to compare overall postoperative complications, major morbidities, duration of surgery, blood loss, transfusion, length of stay, recurrence, and survival between the two groups. RESULTS: Among 210 eligible patients, 46 pairs were created by propensity score matching. Complication rates were 28% for OLR and 11% for LLR (p = 0.036). There were no significant differences in major morbidities (15% vs. 8.7%, p = 0.522) or duration of surgery (199 min vs. 189 min, p = 0.785). LLR was associated with a lower incidence of blood transfusion (22% vs. 4.4%, p = 0.013), less blood loss (415 vs. 54 mL, p < 0.001), and shorter postoperative hospital stay (9 vs. 6 days, p < 0.001). Differences in recurrence-free survival and overall survival between the two groups were not statistically significant (p = 0.222 and 0.301, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: LLR was superior to OLR for NAFLD-HCC in terms of overall postoperative complications, blood loss, blood transfusion, and postoperative length of stay. Moreover, recurrence-free survival and overall survival were comparable between LLR and OLR. Although there is a need for careful LLR candidate selection according to tumor size and location, LLR can be regarded as a preferred treatment for NAFLD-HCC over OLR.

A wide variety of functional regulatory non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been identified as essential regulators of plant growth and development. Depending on their category, ncRNAs are not only involved in modulating target gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels but also are involved in processes like RNA splicing and RNA-directed DNA methylation. To fulfill their molecular roles properly, ncRNAs must be precisely processed by multiprotein complexes. In the case of small RNAs, DICER-LIKE (DCL) proteins play critical roles in the production of mature molecules. Land plant genomes contain at least four distinct classes of DCL family proteins (DCL1-DCL4), of which DCL1, DCL3 and DCL4 are also present in the genomes of bryophytes, indicating the early divergence of these genes. The liverwort Marchantia polymorpha has become an attractive model species for investigating the evolutionary history of regulatory ncRNAs and proteins that are responsible for ncRNA biogenesis. Recent studies on Marchantia have started to uncover the similarities and differences in ncRNA production and function between the basal lineage of bryophytes and other land plants. In this review, we summarize findings on the essential role of regulatory ncRNAs in Marchantia development. We provide a comprehensive overview of conserved ncRNA-target modules among M. polymorpha, the moss Physcomitrium patens and the dicot Arabidopsis thaliana, as well as Marchantia-specific modules. Based on functional studies and data from the literature, we propose new connections between regulatory pathways involved in Marchantia's vegetative and reproductive development and emphasize the need for further functional studies to understand the molecular mechanisms that control ncRNA-directed developmental processes.

NADPH oxidase (Nox), a major source of reactive oxygen species (ROS), is involved in neurodegeneration after injury and disease. Nox is expressed in both neuronal and non-neuronal cells and contributes to an elevated ROS level after injury. Contrary to the well-known damaging effect of Nox-derived ROS in neurodegeneration, recently a physiological role of Nox in nervous system development including neurogenesis, neuronal polarity, and axonal growth has been revealed. Here, we tested a role for neuronal Nox in neurite regeneration following mechanical transection in cultured Aplysia bag cell neurons. Using a novel hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 )-sensing dye, 5'-(p-borophenyl)-2'-pyridylthiazole pinacol ester (BPPT), we found that H2 O2 levels are elevated in regenerating growth cones following injury. Redistribution of Nox2 and p40phox in the growth cone central domain suggests Nox2 activation after injury. Inhibiting Nox with the pan-Nox inhibitor celastrol reduced neurite regeneration rate. Pharmacological inhibition of Nox is correlated with reduced activation of Src2 tyrosine kinase and F-actin content in the growth cone. Taken together, these findings suggest that Nox-derived ROS regulate neurite regeneration following injury through Src2-mediated regulation of actin organization in Aplysia growth cones.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with Child-Pugh A cirrhosis has been shown to be beneficial. However, less is known regarding the outcomes of such treatment in patients with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis. We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic liver resection for HCC in patients with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis, focusing on surgical risks, recurrence, and survival. METHODS: 357 patients with HCC who underwent laparoscopic liver resection from 2007 to 2021 were identified from our single-institute database. The patients were divided into three groups by their Child-Pugh score: the Child-Pugh A (n = 280), Child-Pugh B7 (n = 42), and Child-Pugh B8/9 groups (n = 35). Multivariable Cox regression models for recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were constructed with adjustment for preoperative and postoperative clinicopathological factors. RESULTS: The Child-Pugh B8/9 group had a significantly higher complication rate, but the complication rates were comparable between the Child-Pugh B7 and Child-Pugh A groups (Child-Pugh A vs. B7 vs. B8/9: 8.2% vs. 9.6% vs. 26%, respectively; P = 0.010). Compared with the Child-Pugh A group, the risk-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) in the Child-Pugh B7 and B8/9 groups for RFS were 1.39 (0.77-2.50) and 3.15 (1.87-5.31), respectively, and those for OS were 0.60 (0.21-1.73) and 1.80 (0.86-3.74), respectively. There were no significant differences in major morbidities (Clavien-Dindo grade > II) (P = 0.117) or the proportion of retreatment after HCC recurrence (P = 0.367) among the three groups. CONCLUSION: Among patients with HCC, those with Child-Pugh A and B7 cirrhosis can be good candidates for laparoscopic liver resection in terms of complications and recurrence. Despite poor postoperative outcomes in patients with Child-Pugh B8/9 cirrhosis, laparoscopic liver resection is less likely to interfere with retreatment and can be performed as part of multidisciplinary treatment.

BACKGROUND: In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social (pragmatic) communication disorder (SCD) were described as a new category of psychiatry nosography. SCD involves impairments in social communication and social interaction but not restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. The autism spectrum quotient (AQ) was developed to screen for autism tendencies in adults with normal intelligence. However, AQ cutoff scores for screening ASD and SCD in the DSM-5 have not been established. This study examined whether the Japanese version of the AQ (AQ-J) total scores could discriminate between an ASD group, an SCD group, and a neurotypical (NT) group. METHODS: Participants were 127 ASD patients, 52 SCD patients, and 49 NT individuals. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to examine AQ-J total score cutoff values to distinguish between ASD and NT groups, SCD and NT groups, and ASD and SCD groups. RESULTS: In the ROC analysis for the ASD and NT groups, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.96, and the optimum cutoff value was 23 points (sensitivity 92.9%, specificity 85.7%). The AUC for the SCD and NT groups was 0.89, and the optimum cutoff value was 22 points (sensitivity 84.6%, specificity 85.7%). The AUC for the ASD and SCD groups was 0.75; the optimum cutoff value was 32 points (sensitivity 67.7%, specificity 71.2%). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest the usefulness of the AQ-J in screening for ASD and SCD.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies have found significant relationships between autistic traits and depression/anxiety, the relationships between autistic traits and postpartum depression/anxiety remain unclear. Moreover, few studies have examined the relationships between autistic traits and mother-infant bonding while considering depression or anxiety. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional data analysis design. Participants were 2692 women who completed the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS) at 1 month postpartum. We performed path analysis that included parity, the five AQ subscales (social skills, attention switching, attention to detail, communication, and imagination), both HADS subscales (anxiety and depression), and the two MIBS subscales (lack of affection and anger and rejection). RESULTS: Our path analysis revealed that higher scores for social skills, attention switching, communication, and imagination were associated with higher scores for depression. Higher scores for social skills, attention switching, attention to detail, and communication were associated with higher scores for anxiety. Moreover, difficulties in social skills and imagination were associated with failure of maternal-infant bonding. However, more attention to detail was associated with better maternal-infant bonding. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that maternal autistic traits are related to anxiety and depression to a certain degree, but only slightly related to maternal-infant bonding at 1 month postpartum. To improve autistic women's quality of life and that of their newborns, perinatal mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and maternal-fetal bonding difficulties should be appropriately addressed.

BACKGROUND: We compared the recurrence-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), and safety of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-NAFLD hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. METHODS: Patients with HCC (n = 349) were divided into four groups based on the HCC etiology (NAFLD [n = 71], hepatitis B [n = 27], hepatitis C [n = 187], alcohol/autoimmune hepatitis [AIH] [n = 64]). RFS and OS were assessed by multivariate analysis after adjustment for clinicopathological variables. A subgroup analysis was performed based on the presence (n = 248) or absence (n = 101) of cirrhosis. RESULTS: Compared with the NAFLD group, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for RFS in the hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and alcohol/AIH groups were 0.49 (0.22-1.09), 0.90 (0.54-1.48), and 1.08 (0.60-1.94), respectively. For OS, the values were 0.28 (0.09-0.84), 0.52 (0.28-0.95), and 0.59 (0.27-1.30), respectively. With cirrhosis, NAFLD was associated with worse OS than hepatitis C (P = 0.010). Without cirrhosis, NAFLD had significantly more complications (P = 0.034), but comparable survival than others. DISCUSSION: Patients with NAFLD-HCC have some disadvantages after LLR. In patients with cirrhosis, LLR is safe, but survival is poor. In patients without cirrhosis, the complication risk is high.

We describe a novel manifestation of rigidochromic behavior in a series of tetranuclear Cu(I)-pyrazolate (Cu4pz4) macrocycles, with implications for solid-state luminescence at deep-blue wavelengths (<460 nm). The Cu4pz4 emissions are remarkably sensitive to structural effects far from the luminescent core: when 3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazoles are used as bridging ligands, adding a C4 substituent can induce a blue shift of more than 100 nm. X-ray crystal and computational analyses reveal that C4 units influence the conformational behavior of adjacent tert-butyl groups, with a subsequent impact on the global conformation of the Cu4pz4 complex. Emissions are mediated primarily through a cluster-centered triplet (3CC) state; compression of the Cu4 cluster into a nearly close-packed geometry prevents the reorganization of its excited-state structure and preserves the 3CC energy at a high level. The remote steric effect may thus offer alternative strategies toward the design of phosphors with rigid excited-state geometries.

AIM: This study was aimed towards detecting how perceived parenting practices before adolescence affect maternal-infant bonding in the perinatal period, considering factors such as depression, anxiety, and parity. METHODS: We used the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) to examine perceived parenting practices. Participants included 1301 pregnant women who completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS) at three time points: early pregnancy (approximately 12-15 weeks), late pregnancy (approximately 30-34 weeks) and postpartum (4 weeks after childbirth). We performed a path analysis with factors including parity, PBI subscales (paternal care, paternal overprotection, maternal care and maternal overprotection), HADS and MIBS. RESULTS: Perceived paternal or maternal low care parenting predicted higher HADS and MIBS scores in early pregnancy. Moreover, perceived maternal low care parenting predicted higher HADS scores at postpartum and higher MIBS scores in late pregnancy. Perceived paternal or maternal overprotective parenting predicted higher HADS scores in the pregnancy period. Furthermore, perceived maternal overprotective parenting predicted higher MIBS scores in late pregnancy. Being primipara predicted higher HADS scores at postpartum and higher MIBS scores in early pregnancy and at postpartum. Being multipara predicted higher MIBS scores in late pregnancy. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that perceived negative parenting before adolescence has indirect effects (via anxiety and depression) and direct effects on maternal-infant bonding in the perinatal period.

Stress granules, a type of cytoplasmic RNA granule in eukaryotic cells, are induced in response to various environmental stresses, including high temperature. However, how high temperatures induce the formation of these stress granules in plant cells is largely unknown. Here, we characterized the process of stress granule formation in Arabidopsis thaliana by combining live imaging and electron microscopy analysis. In seedlings grown at 22°C, stress granule formation was induced at temperatures above a critical threshold level of 34°C in the absence of transpiration. The threshold temperature was the same, regardless of whether the seedlings were grown at 22°C or 4°C. High-resolution live imaging microscopy revealed that stress granule formation is not correlated with the sizes of pre-existing RNA processing bodies (P-bodies) but that the two structures often associated rapidly. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed a previously unidentified characteristic of the fine structures of Arabidopsis stress granules and P-bodies: the lack of ribosomes and the presence of characteristic electron-dense globular and filamentous structures. These results provide new insights into the universal nature of stress granules in eukaryotic cells.

The induction of rapid cell death is an effective strategy for plants to restrict biotrophic and hemi-biotrophic pathogens at the infection site. However, activation of cell death comes at a high cost, as dead cells will no longer be available for defense responses nor general metabolic processes. In addition, necrotrophic pathogens that thrive on dead tissue, take advantage of cell death-triggering mechanisms. Mechanisms by which plants solve this conundrum remain described. Here, we identify PLANT SMY2-TYPE ILE-GYF DOMAIN-CONTAINING PROTEIN 1 (PSIG1) and show that PSIG1 helps to restrict cell death induction during pathogen infection. Inactivation of PSIG1 does not result in spontaneous lesions, and enhanced cell death in psig1 mutants is independent of salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis or reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Moreover, PSIG1 interacts with SMG7, which plays a role in nonsense-mediated RNA decay (NMD), and the smg7-4 mutant allele mimics the cell death phenotype of the psig1 mutants. Intriguingly, the psig1 mutants display enhanced susceptibility to the hemi-biotrophic bacterial pathogen. These findings point to the existence and importance of the SA- and ROS-independent cell death constraining mechanism as a part of the plant immune system.

A 68-year-old female with rectal cancer underwent low anterior resection with regional lymph node dissection. The final pathological diagnosis was Stage Ⅲa, and an adjuvant therapy(S-1)was provided for 6 months. One year after the surgery, an anastomotic recurrence was detected. Therefore, pelvic chemoradiotherapy with folinic acid and 5-fluorouracil(FL)was provided, and resection was performed with the Hartmann procedure. Following the second surgery, chemotherapy with bevacizumab(BV)and capecitabine plus oxaliplatin(CapeOX)was provided, and the patient showed no signs of recurrence for several years. However, lung metastasis appeared, which was resected. A year later, the patient underwent hepatectomy and radiofrequency ablation for liver metastasis. Another year later, she underwent lung resection again because of new lung metastasis. During the periods between the surgeries, various chemotherapy regimens were followed continuously, however, the patient died of progressive recurrence 8 years and 4 months after the initial surgery. Recurrences and distant metastases are poor prognostic factors for rectal cancers. However, combined effective chemotherapy and radiotherapy with surgery may improve the patient's chances of survival.

The patient was a 64-year-old man with Type 3 advanced cancer in the upper body of the stomach. The preoperative tumor marker value of CA19-9 was abnormally high, but there was no proof of distant metastasis or peritoneal dissemination. The first operation was an exploratory laparotomy due to direct tumor invasion to the pancreas. Systemic chemotherapy was performed for tumor reduction. First, S-1 plus cisplatin therapy was administered for 4 courses but discontinued because of renal dysfunction and thrombocytopenia. In the second-line therapy, ramucirumabplus paclitaxel therapy was administered for 7 courses. Since the tumor invasion to the pancreas turned to be clear based on a CT scan, total gastrectomy with regional lymphadenectomy was performed. However, 5 months after surgery, a single nodule appeared in the upper abdomen that was suspected to be peritoneal dissemination. Nivolumab therapy was administered for 16 months without tumor enlargement or any adverse effect. Recently, there has been a marked development in chemotherapy for gastric cancer. Unresectable cases became operable after the administration of appropriate chemotherapy. In our case, nivolumab therapy had no adverse effect. However, serious adverse effects have been reported by several authors which suggests that regular examinations for interstitial pneumonia, hypothyroidism, and other adverse effects are important.

Plants generally possess a strong ability to regenerate organs; for example, in tissue culture, shoots can regenerate from callus, a clump of actively proliferating, undifferentiated cells. Processing of pre-mRNA and ribosomal RNAs is important for callus formation and shoot regeneration. However, our knowledge of the roles of RNA quality control via the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) pathway in shoot regeneration is limited. Here, we examined the shoot regeneration phenotypes of the low-beta-amylase1 (lba1)/upstream frame shift1-1 (upf1-1) and upf3-1 mutants, in which the core NMD components UPF1 and UPF3 are defective. These mutants formed callus from hypocotyl explants normally, but this callus behaved abnormally during shoot regeneration: the mutant callus generated numerous adventitious root structures instead of adventitious shoots in an auxin-dependent manner. Quantitative RT-PCR and microarray analyses showed that the upf mutations had widespread effects during culture on shoot-induction medium. In particular, the expression patterns of early auxin response genes, including those encoding AUXIN/INDOLE ACETIC ACID (AUX/IAA) family members, were significantly affected in the upf mutants. Also, the upregulation of shoot apical meristem-related transcription factor genes, such as CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON1 (CUC1) and CUC2, was inhibited in the mutants. Taken together, these results indicate that NMD-mediated transcriptomic regulation modulates the auxin response in plants and thus plays crucial roles in the early stages of shoot regeneration.

Brassinosteroid (BR) signalling is known to be coordinated with light signalling in above ground tissue. Many studies focusing on the shade avoidance response in above ground tissue or hypocotyl elongation in darkness have revealed the contribution of the BR signalling pathway to these processes. We previously analysed the expression of DWARF 4 (DWF4), a key BR biosynthesis enzyme, and revealed that light perception in above ground tissues triggered DWF4 accumulation in root tips. To determine the required wavelength of light and photoreceptors responsible for this regulation, we studied DWF4-GUS marker plants grown in several monochromatic light conditions. We revealed that monochromatic blue LED light could induce DWF4 accumulation in primary root tips and root growth as much as white light, whereas monochromatic red LED could not. Consistent with this, a cryptochrome1/2 double mutant showed retarded root growth under white light whereas a phytochromeA/B double mutant did not. Taken together, our data strongly indicated that blue light signalling was important for DWF4 accumulation in root tips and root growth. Furthermore, DWF4 accumulation patterns in primary root tips were not altered by auxin or sugar treatment. Therefore, we hypothesize that blue light signalling from the shoot tissue is different from auxin and sugar signalling.

Deep-red to near-infrared (NIR) OLEDs, which yield emission peak wavelengths beyond λ=660 nm, are applicable as unique light sources in plant growth or health monitoring systems. Compared with other visible-spectrum OLEDs, however, research in the field of deep-red OLEDs is not as advanced. In this work, three new types of dibenzofuran-based host materials are developed as n-type exciplex host partners. Combining these with the deep-red iridium complex bis(2,3-diphenylquinoxaline)iridium(dipivaloylmethane) ([(DPQ)2 Ir(dpm)]) and N,N'-di(naphalene-1-yl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine (α-NPD) as a p-type exciplex host partner, a highly efficient deep-red OLED can be realized with a maximum external quantum efficiency (ηext,max ) of over 16 % with Comission Internationale de l'Éclairge (CIE) coordinates of (0.71, 0.28). In addition, the effect of the doping concentration and the p/n ratio of the exciplex host on the efficiency and the lifetime of the OLEDs are investigated. Consequently, the optimized device exhibits a ηext,max of over 15 % and a six-time longer lifetime operating at high brightness of 100 cd m-2 compared with other state-of-the-art deep-red OLEDs.

Exploration of pure metal-free organic molecules that exhibit strong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is an emerging research topic. In this regard, unveiling the design principles for an efficient RTP molecule is an essential, but challenging, task. A small molecule is an ideal platform to precisely understand the fundamental role of each functional component because the parent molecule can be easily derivatized. Here, the RTP behaviors of a series of 3-pyridylcarbazole derivatives are presented. Experimental studies in combination with theoretical calculations reveal the crucial role of the n orbital on the central pyridine ring in the dramatic enhancement of the intersystem crossing between the charge-transfer-excited singlet state and the locally excited triplet states. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies apparently indicate that both the pyridine ring and fluorine atom contribute to the enhancement of the RTP because of the restricted motion owing to weak C-H⋅⋅⋅N and H⋅⋅⋅F hydrogen-bonding interactions. The single crystal of the fluorine-substituted derivative shows an ultra-long phosphorescent lifetime (τP ) of 1.1 s and a phosphorescence quantum yield (ΦP ) of 1.2 %, whereas the bromine-substituted derivative exhibits τP of 0.15 s with a ΦP of 7.9 %. We believe that this work provides a fundamental and universal guideline for the generation of pure organic molecules exhibiting strong RTP.

The herb Ruta chalepensis L. exhibits medical effects, such as anti-inflammatory, central nervous system depressant, and antipyretic activities. However, a genetic transformation method has not yet been developed for this species. In this paper, a simple and efficient tissue culture and genetic transformation system for R. chalepensis is reported. An amyloid ß-peptide (Aß) gene, which is considered to be a causative agent of Alzheimer's disease (AD), fused with green-fluorescent protein (GFP), was introduced into R. chalepensis. When the leaves of R. chalepensis expressing Aß-GFP were administered orally to C57BL/6J mice, serum anti-Aß antibody titers of several mice were elevated without the use of an adjuvant. These results indicated that an oral vaccine against AD using R. chalepensis may be feasible. R. chalepensis is rich in bioactive compounds that may have synergistic effects with the vaccine for AD. Plant-derived vaccines are safer and cheaper than those produced from animal cells or microbes, because plants can serve as biofactories at low cost and with high biosynthetic capacity.
