RESUMEN

Research has demonstrated that individuals can direct their attention to valuable information in both working memory and long-term memory tasks with observable effects on performance. However, it is currently unclear whether prioritising an item for a working memory task automatically translates into a boost at long-term memory. This was examined in two experiments using relatively short (250 ms per item; Experiment 1) and longer (500 ms per item; Experiment 2) encoding times. Participants first completed a visual working memory task, in which they were presented with series of photographs of everyday objects. Following a brief delay (1,000 ms), they completed a four-alternative forced-choice test. Prior to encoding, participants were informed of the point values associated with each item. In some trials, the first item in the sequence was worth more points than the rest. In other trials, all items were equally valuable. After a filled delay, participants completed a surprise long-term memory task. At working memory, a value effect was reliably observed on recognition accuracy, along with some evidence of faster response times for high-value items. However, there was little consistent evidence of this effect automatically persisting into long-term memory. Thus, the benefits of attentional prioritization in working memory do not always translate into longer-term performance. More broadly, this provides further evidence that manipulations that enhance working memory performance do not necessarily enhance long-term memory.

RESUMEN

A prospective study was made in 85 patients of the relationship between implantation of metal-to-polyethylene hip prostheses and the incidence of delayed-type allergy to components of the prostheses. It shows that sensitization to cobalt, nickel and chromate, and to methacrylate, can develop as a result of such implantation. Loosening did not occur in any of the cases of possible sensitization. Evidence of allergy to prosthetic components was not found in any of the 10 cases of loosening.

RESUMEN

On 73 patients suspected for atopic diseases, 258 skin tests and radioallergosorbent tests (RAST) for specific IgE in serum were carried out. The results of both tests were compared in connection with the clinical picture. A good qualitative positive correlation was found, especially for grass pollen and house dust. False positive results with RAST cannot be excluded. The RAST seems to be a valuable adjunct to extensive allergologic diagnostic investigation, particularly in cases where difficulties can be expected in the performance or the interpretation of skin tests.

RESUMEN

In a multicentre double-blind trial the effect of three therapy regimens was studied for 6 weeks in ninety psoriasis patients: (1) aromatic retinoid (Ro 10-9359) orally (0.50-0.66 mg/kg body weight) and placebo cream topically; (2) aromatic retinoid (Ro 10-9359) (same dosage) with 0.1% triamcinolone acetonide and 5% salicylic acid in lanette wax cream; (3) placebo capsules with 0.1% triamcinolone acetonide and 5% salicylic acid in lanette wax cream. Regimen 1 had virtually no effect and regimen 2 gave better results than regimen 3 for almost all parameters, although statistical significance was reached for only some of them. The 6 week double-blind period was followed by an open study in which all patients were treated according to regimen 2. The clinical result could be maintained up to the end of the study (18 weeks), when more than 60% of the patients showed good to excellant (80-100%) improvement. Most of the side-effects of retinoid were mild and relatively rare. It is concluded that the combination of the aromatic retinoid (Ro 10-9359) given in low dosage orally with corticosteroids topically is as effective as therapy with the retinoid in high dosage alone, but with markedly less side-effects.
