RESUMEN

A new series of robust C^C^N carbazolylgold(III) complexes is designed and synthesized through the introduction of inert and sterically bulky oligophenyl substituents on the pyridyl moiety of the cyclometalating ligand. High photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 96% are recorded with these complexes doped in solid-state thin films, and short excited-state lifetimes of 0.3 µs or less in the solid state at room temperature are found. Promising electroluminescence (EL) performances are shown by the vacuum-deposited organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on this series of gold(III) complexes. High external quantum efficiencies of up to 19.5% with efficiency roll-offs of down to 10% at a practical luminance brightness level of 1000 cd m-2 are achieved. More importantly, record-long operational lifetimes (LT50) of up to 470,700 h at 100 cd m-2 are realized, which is currently the highest value among all classes of gold(III) complexes with tridentate pincer ligands. Particularly, by introducing a sterically bulky terphenyl moiety on the reactive site of the pyridine ring, the LT50 value is shown to attain ∼7 times longer half-lifetime than that based on the unsubstituted complex. These unprecedented EL performances and the simple synthetic route in a mercury-free fashion make them promising emitting materials for practical OLEDs toward commercialization.

RESUMEN

Phosphorescent dopants are promising candidates for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Although it has been established that the out-coupling efficiency and overall performances of vacuum-deposited OLEDs can be significantly improved by a horizontal orientation of the dopants, no horizontally oriented gold(III) complexes have been reported to date. Herein, a novel class of tetradentate C^C^N^N ligand-containing gold(III) complexes with a preferential horizontal orientation successfully generated through a one-pot reaction is reported. These complexes demonstrate high photoluminescence quantum yields of 70 % and a high horizontal dipole ratio of 0.87 in solid-state thin films. Green-emitting OLEDs based on these complexes operate with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 20.6 % with an estimated out-coupling efficiency of around 30 %. A promising device stability has been achieved in the vacuum-deposited OLEDs, with operational half-lifetimes of around 37 500 h at 100 cd m-2 .

RESUMEN

This paper reports on a study which explored the possible relationship between road traffic noisescape and urban form in Hong Kong. A total of 212 residential complexes from 11 contrasting urban forms were sampled, and their noise levels assessed both at dwelling and neighbourhood scales by noise mapping. Its findings indicate that residential complexes with different urban forms have significantly different noisescape attributes. There is a strong correlation between the noise characteristics and morphological indicators at the dwelling scale. A less obstreperous noisescape is associated with urban forms with lower road and building densities, and with building arrangements which provide self-noise screening. These findings suggest that urban form is an influential determinant of the noisescape in the urban environment, and they point to the need to rethink the conventional approach to managing the urban acoustic environment.

RESUMEN

A series of carbazolyl ligands has been designed and synthesized through the integration of various electron-donating and electron-accepting motifs, including electron-donating 4-(diphenylamino)aryl and electron-accepting cyano and diphenylphosphine oxide moieties, for the development of a new class of gold(iii) complexes, where the energies of their triplet intraligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excited states can be manipulated for the activation of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Upon excitation, these complexes show high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 80% in solid-state thin films, with short excited state lifetimes down to 1 µs. Vacuum-deposited and solution-processed organic light-emitting devices based on these complexes demonstrate promising electroluminescence (EL) performance with maximum external quantum efficiencies of 15.0% and 11.7%, respectively, and notably small efficiency roll-off values of less than 1% at the practical luminance brightness level of 1000 cd m-2. These distinct EL performances are believed to be due to the occurrence of multichannel radiative decay pathways via both phosphorescence and TADF that significantly shorten the emission lifetimes and hence reduce the occurrence of the detrimental triplet-triplet annihilation in the gold(iii) complexes.

RESUMEN

The implementation of DP will revolutionize current practice by providing pathologists with additional tools and algorithms to improve workflow. Furthermore, DP will open up opportunities for development of AI-based tools for more precise and reproducible diagnosis through computational pathology. One of the key features of AI is its capability to generate perceptions and recognize patterns beyond the human senses. Thus, the incorporation of AI into DP can reveal additional morphological features and information. At the current rate of AI development and adoption of DP, the interest in computational pathology is expected to rise in tandem. There have already been promising developments related to AI-based solutions in prostate cancer detection; however, in the GI tract, development of more sophisticated algorithms is required to facilitate histological assessment of GI specimens for early and accurate diagnosis. In this review, we aim to provide an overview of the current histological practices in AP laboratories with respect to challenges faced in image preprocessing, present the existing AI-based algorithms, discuss their limitations and present clinical insight with respect to the application of AI in early detection and diagnosis of GI cancer.

RESUMEN

Field-induced domain-wall dynamics in ferroelectric materials underpins multiple applications ranging from actuators to information technology devices and necessitates a quantitative description of the associated mechanisms including giant electromechanical couplings, controlled nonlinearities, or low coercive voltages. While the advances in dynamic piezoresponse force microscopy measurements over the last two decades have rendered visualization of polarization dynamics relatively straightforward, the associated insights into the local mechanisms have been elusive. This work explores the domain dynamics in model polycrystalline materials using a workflow combining deep-learning-based segmentation of the domain structures with nonlinear dimensionality reduction using multilayer rotationally invariant autoencoders (rVAE). The former allows unambiguous identification and classification of the ferroelectric and ferroelastic domain walls. The rVAE discovers the latent representations of the domain wall geometries and their dynamics, thus providing insight into the intrinsic mechanisms of polarization switching, that can further be compared to simple physical models. The rVAE disentangles the factors affecting the pinning efficiency of ferroelectric walls, offering insights into the correlation of ferroelastic wall distribution and ferroelectric wall pinning.

RESUMEN

A nomogram was recently published by Sun et al. to predict overall survival (OS) and the additional benefit of concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) vs. radiotherapy (RT) alone, in stage II NPC treated with conventional RT. We aimed to assess the predictors of OS and to externally validate the nomogram in the IMRT era. We analyzed stage II NPC patients treated with definitive RT alone or CCRT between 2001 and 2011 under the territory-wide Hong Kong NPC Study Group 1301 study. Clinical parameters were studied using the Cox proportional hazards model to estimate OS. The nomogram by Sun et al. was applied with 1000 times bootstrap resampling to calculate the concordance index, and we compared the nomogram predicted and observed 5-year OS. There were 482 patients included. The 5-year OS was 89.0%. In the multivariable analysis, an age > 45 years was the only significant predictor of OS (HR, 1.98; 95%CI, 1.15-3.44). Other clinical parameters were insignificant, including the use of CCRT (HR, 0.99; 95%CI, 0.62-1.58). The nomogram yielded a concordance index of 0.55 (95% CI, 0.49-0.62) which lacked clinically meaningful discriminative power. The nomogram proposed by Sun et al. should be interpreted with caution when applied to stage II NPC patients in the IMRT era. The benefit of CCRT remained controversial.

RESUMEN

The population of Hong Kong and the proportion of elderly people have been increasing rapidly. The aim of this retrospective cohort study is to determine predictive factors for psychiatric rehospitalization within 2 years among elderly patients who were discharged from psychiatric wards, in attempt to reduce their rehospitalization rate and to reintegrate them into the community. Patients aged 65 and over, who were discharged from psychiatric wards of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital from 1 March 2010 to 29 February 2012, were identified. Rehospitalization within 2 years after discharge was the primary outcome measure, and the time to rehospitalization was measured as the secondary outcome. Patients were subgrouped into readmitted and non-readmitted groups. Logistic regression and Cox regression analyses were applied to the potential predictive factors with odds ratios and hazard ratios obtained, respectively, for the significant findings. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were plotted for graphical representation of the study results in survival analysis. 368 individuals satisfying the study criteria were identified. The same four factors were shown to be significantly associated with rehospitalization in both multiple logistic regression and Cox regression survival analysis. Referral to other psychiatric disciplines upon discharge (p< 0.001, OR=0.325, HR=0.405) was associated with a lower rehospitalization risk and correlated to a longer time to rehospitalization. History of suicidal behaviors (p< 0.001, OR=4.906, HR=3.161), history of violent behaviors (p< 0.001, OR=5.443, HR=3.935) and greater number of previous psychiatric admissions (p< 0.001, OR=1.250, HR=1.121)  were associated with a higher rehospitalization risk and predicted earlier rehospitalization. The rehospitalization rate of elderly patients was 5.2% at 1 month, 9.5% at 3 months, 15.0% at 6 months, 17.1% at 1 year, 18.8% at 1.5 year and 20.9% at 2 years.
