RESUMEN

This article describes the self-assembly of π-conjugated building blocks composed of single amino acid and pyrene (Py) moieties. In aqueous conditions, the Py-capped amino acids undergo self-assembly through various non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen-bonding, π-π stacking as well as electrostatic interactions to form supramolecular nanostructures in acidic and basic conditions. Interestingly, we found that the blend of different Py-gelators with oppositely charged amino acids (Py-Glu and Py-Lys) displays unique nano-structural morphologies and gelation properties of the resulting hydrogels at physiological pH when compared with single Py conjugates, which was attributed to additional electrostatic interactions. Overall, this report illustrates the importance of two-component supramolecular co-assembled hydrogels and their structure-morphology relationship, improved mechanical properties, and biocompatibility and thus provides a new insight into the design of self-assembled nanomaterials.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to detect the expression of Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) in breast cancer tissues and to evaluate the effect on the proliferation of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells. The expression of KLF4 protein in 239 breast cancer tissues and 40 paracancerous tissues were detected by an immunohistochemical assay, and its correlation with clinical pathological parameters was analyzed. A eukaryotic expression vector, pcDNA3.1-KLF4, was constructed by transient transfection of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells with liposomes (experimental group). The untransfected cells and those transfected with empty plasmid pcDNA3.1 were used as the blank and negative control groups, respectively. The expression of the KLF4 gene and protein in the three groups were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively. Furthermore, the cell proliferative capacity was detected by an MTT assay. The positive expression rate of KLF4 protein in breast cancer tissues (39.0%, 93/239) was significantly lower than that of paracancerous tissues (77.5%, 31/40) (P<0.05). In addition, KLF4 protein expression in breast cancer tissues was correlated with pathological type, histological grade and lymphatic metastasis (P<0.05). KLF4 mRNA and protein were both expressed by the experimental group, but not by the two control groups. Meanwhile, the proliferative capacity of the experimental group was also significantly decreased. A significant decrease in the positive expression rate of KLF4 protein in breast cancer tissues was correlated with several clinical pathological parameters. In addition, transfection of the KLF4 gene inhibited the proliferation of breast cancer cells, suggesting that this gene is important in the onset and progression of this type of cancer.

RESUMEN

As a promising alternative for lithium ion batteries, room-temperature sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have become one significant research frontier of energy storage devices although there are still many difficulties to be overcome. For the moment, the studies still concentrate on the preparation of new electrode materials for SIBs to meet the applicability. Herein, one new P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn5/9Al1/9O2 (NMA) cathode material is successfully prepared via a simple and facile liquid-state method. The prepared NMA is layered transition metal oxide, which can keep stable crystal structure during sodiation/desodiation as demonstrated by the ex situ X-ray diffraction, and its electrochemical properties can be further enhanced by connecting the cake-like NMA microparticles with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) using a ball milling method. Electrochemical tests show that the formed RGO-connected NMA (NMA/RGO) can deliver a higher reversible capacity of up to 138 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and also exhibit a superior high-rate capabilities and cycling stability in comparison to pure NMA. The much improved properties should be attributed to the reduced particle size and improvement of electrical conductivity and apparent Na(+) diffusion due to RGO incorporation, which is comprehensively verified by the electrochemical technologies of galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry at various scan rate as well as ex-situ X-ray diffraction studies.
