RESUMEN

NUP155 is reported to be correlated with tumor development. However, the role of NUP155 in tumor physiology and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) has not been previously examined. This study comprehensively investigated the expression, immunological function, and prognostic significance of NUP155 in different cancer types. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that NUP155 was upregulated in 26 types of cancer. Additionally, NUP155 upregulation was strongly correlated with advanced pathological or clinical stages and poor prognosis in several cancers. Furthermore, NUP155 was significantly and positively correlated with DNA methylation, tumor mutational burden, microsatellite instability, and stemness score in most cancers. Additionally, NUP155 was also found to be involved in TIME and closely associated with tumor infiltrating immune cells and immunoregulation-related genes. Functional enrichment analysis revealed a strong correlation between NUP155 and immunomodulatory pathways, especially antigen processing and presentation. The role of NUP155 in breast cancer has not been examined. This study, for the first time, demonstrated that NUP155 was upregulated in breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA) cells and revealed its oncogenic role in BRCA using molecular biology experiments. Thus, our study highlights the potential value of NUP155 as a biomarker in the assessment of prognostic prediction, tumor microenvironment and immunotherapeutic response in pan-cancer.

RESUMEN

The reaction of the lithium aryl(silyl)amide Dipp(i Pr3 Si)NLi (Dipp=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ) with one equivalent of SnCl2 in THF gave a novel stannylenoid Dipp(i Pr3 Si)NSnCl⋅LiCl(THF)2 . Heating the solution of amidostannylenoid in toluene to 80 °C resulted in dimeric amido(chloro)stannylene [Dipp(i Pr3 Si)NSnCl]2 , which can be converted to bis(amido)stannylene Sn[N(Dipp)(i Pr3 Si)]2 and amido(imino)stannylene Sn[N(Dipp)(i Pr3 Si)][IPrN] (IPrN=bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-imino). Treatment of bis(imino)stannylenoid [IPrN]2 Sn(Cl)Li with N2 O resulted in the dimeric complex [IPrNSn(Cl)OLi]2 . All compounds were characterized by NMR, elementary analysis, and X-ray structural determination.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Evidence on the association between the creatinine to body weight (Cre/BW) ratio and the risk of pre-diabetes to diabetes development remains limited. Our study aimed to examine the association between the Cre/BW ratio and incident diabetes in pre-diabetic patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 24,506 pre-diabetic participants who underwent health checks from 2010 to 2016 in China. We used the Cox proportional-hazards regression model to explore the relationship between baseline Cre/BW ratio and diabetes risk in pre-diabetes patients. Using a Cox proportional hazards regression with cubic spline function and smooth curve fitting (cubical spline smoothing), we were able to determine the non-linear relationship between them. We also carried out a number of subgroup and sensitivity analyses. RESULTS: The age range of the participants included in this study was 20-99 years, with a majority of 16,232 individuals (66.24%) being men. The mean baseline Cre/BW ratio was 1.06 (SD 0.22) umol/L/kg. 2512 (10.25%) participants received a diabetes final diagnosis over a median follow-up period of 2.89 years. After adjusting for covariates, the Cre/BW ratio had a negative association with incident diabetes in participants with pre-diabetes, per umol/L/kg increase in Cre/BM ratio was accompanied by a 55.5% decrease in diabetes risk (HR = 0.445, 95%CI 0.361 to 0.548). The Cre/BW ratio and risk of diabetes had a non-linear connection, with 1.072 umol/L/kg serving as the ratio's inflection point. The HR were 0.294 (95%CI:0.208-0.414) and 0.712 (95%CI:0.492-1.029), respectively, on the left and right sides of the inflection point. The sensitivity analysis demonstrated the robustness of these results. Subgroup analyses indicated that the Cre/BW ratio was strongly associated with the risk of diabetes among participants who were younger than 50 years, as well as among those with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) < 90 mmHg and triglyceride (TG) < 1.7 mmol/L. In contrast, among participants 50 years of age or older, those with DBP ≥ 90 mmHg, and those with TG ≥ 1.7 mmol/L, the relationship between the Cre/BW ratio and the risk of diabetes was attenuated. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates a negative, non-linear relationship between the Cre/BW ratio and the risk of diabetes among the Chinese population with pre-diabetes. From a therapeutic standpoint, it is clinically meaningful to maintain the Cre/BW ratio levels above the inflection point of 1.072 umol/L/kg.

RESUMEN

A novel series of 5-substituted/unsubstituted [1,2,4]triazolo[3,4-b][1,3,4] thiadiazine compounds has been achieved successfully through chemoselective reduction of the C = N bond, based on our prior work. Initial biological evaluation illustrated that the most active derivative 7j exhibited significant cell growth inhibitory activity toward MCF-7, A549, HCT116, and A2780 with the IC50 values of 0.75, 0.94, 2.90, and 4.15 µM, respectively. Most importantly, all the representative analogs did not demonstrate obvious cytotoxic activity against the non-tumoural cell line HEK-293 (IC50 > 100 µM). The mechanism study revealed that 7j caused the G2 /M phase arrest, induced cell apoptosis in HeLa cells in a concentration-dependent manner, and also showed potent tubulin polymerization inhibitory effect. Meanwhile, 7j exerted significant antivascular activity in the wound-healing and tube formation assays. These observations indicate that 5-unsubstituted 6,7-dihydro-5H-[1,2,4]triazolo[3,4-b][1,3,4]thiadiazine scaffold might be considered as a potential lead for antitubulin inhibitors to develop highly efficient anticancer agents with potent selectivity over normal human cells.

RESUMEN

In this study, we used a rat model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) induced by monocrotaline (MCT) to investigate the role and mechanism of angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7) in regulating pulmonary artery diastolic function. Three weeks after subcutaneous injection of MCT or normal saline, the right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) and right ventricular hypertrophy index (RVHI) of rats were detected using a right heart catheter. Vascular endothelium-dependent relaxation was evaluated by acetylcholine (ACh)-induced vasodilation. The relaxation function of vascular smooth muscle was evaluated by sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-induced vasodilation. Human pulmonary artery endothelial cells (HPAECs) were incubated with Ang-(1-7) to measure nitric oxide (NO) release levels. The results showed that compared with control rats, RVSP and RVHI were significantly increased in the MCT-PAH rats, and both ACh or SNP-induced vasodilation were worsened. Incubation of pulmonary artery of MCT-PAH rats with Ang-(1-7) (1 × 10-9-1 × 10-4 mol/L) caused significant vaso-relaxation. Pre-incubation of Ang-(1-7) in the pulmonary artery of MCT-PAH rats significantly improved ACh-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation, but had no significant effect on SNP-induced endothelium-independent relaxation. In addition, Ang-(1-7) treatment significantly increased NO levels in HPAECs. The Mas receptor antagonist A-779 inhibited the effects of Ang-(1-7) on endothelium-dependent relaxation and NO release from endothelial cells. The above results demonstrate that Ang-(1-7) promotes the release of NO from endothelial cells by activating Mas receptor, thereby improving the endothelium-dependent relaxation function of PAH pulmonary arteries.

RESUMEN

Rosae Radix et Rhizoma is a herbal medicine in a variety of famous Chinese patent medicines, while the quality standard for this medicine remains to be developed due to the insufficient research on the quality of Rosae Radix et Rhizoma from different sources. Therefore, this study comprehensively analyzed the components in Rosae Radix et Rhizoma of different sources from the aspects of extract, component category content, identification based on thin-lay chromatography, active component content determination, and fingerprint, so as to improve the quality control. The results showed that the content of chemical components varied in the samples of different sources, while there was little difference in the chemical composition among the samples. The content of components in the roots of Rosa laevigata was higher than that in the other two species, and the content of components in the roots was higher than that in the stems. The fingerprints of triterpenoids and non-triterpenoids were established, and the content of five main triterpenoids including multiflorin, rosamultin, myrianthic acid, rosolic acid, and tormentic acid in Rosae Radix et Rhizoma was determined. The results were consistent with those of major component categories. In conclusion, the quality of Rosae Radix et Rhizoma is associated with the plant species, producing area, and medicinal parts. The method established in this study lays a foundation for improving the quality standard of Rosae Radix et Rhizoma and provides data support for the rational use of the stem.

RESUMEN

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Triazole antifungal-associated severe skin allergy has received little attention. Here we report a case of an acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) patient with diffused skin allergy pervading from the chest, abdomen, back, knees to perineum, with red colour and partially desquamation as well as a neurological adverse (insomnia) event after voriconazole treatment. CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old man with liver failure in our hospital had received voriconazole for invasive fungal infection therapy, and while waiting for liver transplantation exhibited a severe diffuse rash and a neurological adverse event. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a liver failure patient who suffered a severe allergy accompanied with a neurological adverse event after voriconazole administration.

RESUMEN

Alternative splicing is an important mechanism for regulating gene expressions at the post-transcriptional level. In eukaryotes, the genes are transcribed in the nucleus to produce pre-mRNAs and alternative splicing can splice a pre-mRNA to eventually form multiple different mature mRNAs, greatly increasing the number of genes and protein diversity. Alternative splicing is involved in the regulation of various plant life activities, especially the response of plants to abiotic stresses and is also an important process of plant growth and development. This review aims to clarify the usefulness of a genome-wide association analysis in the study of alternatively spliced variants by summarizing the application of alternative splicing, genome-wide association analyses and genome-wide association analyses in alternative splicing, as well as summarizing the related research progress.

RESUMEN

The germanium iron carbonyl complex 3 was prepared by the reaction of dimeric chloro(imino)germylene [IPrNGeCl]2 (IPrN=bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-iminato) with one equivalent of Collman's reagent (Na2 Fe(CO)4 ) at room temperature. Similarly, the reaction of chloro(imino)stannylene [IPrNSnCl]2 with Na2 Fe(CO)4 (1 equiv) resulted in the Fe(CO)4 -bridged bis(stannylene) complex 4. We observed reversible formation of bis(tetrylene) and tetrylene-tetrylone character in complexes 3 vs. 5 and 4 vs. 6, which was supported by DFT calculations. Moreover, the Li/Sn/Fe trimetallic complex 12 has been isolated from the reaction of [IPrNSnCl]2 with cyclopentadienyl iron dicarbonyl anion. The computational analysis further rationalizes the reduction pathway from these chlorotetrylenes to the corresponding complexes.

RESUMEN

Germination is a plant developmental process by which radicle of mature seeds start to penetrate surrounding barriers for seedling establishment and multiple environmental factors have been shown to affect it. Little is known how high salinity affects seed germination of C4 plant, Zea mays. Preliminary germination assay suggested that isolated embryo alone was able to germinate under 200 mM NaCl treatment, whereas the intact seeds were highly repressed. We hypothesized that maize endosperm may function in perception and transduction of salt signal to surrounding tissues such as embryo, showing a completely different response to that in Arabidopsis. Since salt response involves ABA, we analysed in vivo ABA distribution and quantity and the result demonstrated that ABA level in isolated embryo under NaCl treatment failed to increase in comparison with the water control, suggesting that the elevation of ABA level is an endosperm dependent process. Subsequently, by using advanced profiling techniques such as RNA sequencing and SWATH-MS-based quantitative proteomics, we found substantial differences in post-transcriptional and translational changes between salt-treated embryo and endosperm. In summary, our results indicate that these regulatory mechanisms, such as alternative splicing, are likely to mediate early responses to salt stress during maize seed germination.

RESUMEN

A rare three-coordinate germanone [IPrN]2 Ge=O (IPrN=bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-imino) was successfully isolated. The germanone has a rather high thermal stability in arene solvent, and no detectable change was observed at 80 °C for at least one week. However, high thermal stability of [IPrN]2 Ge=O does not prevent its reactivity toward small molecules. Structural analysis and initial reactivity studies revealed the highly polarized nature of the terminal Ge=O bond. Besides, the addition of phenylacetylene, as well as O-atom transfer with 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide make it a mimic of nucleophilic transition-metal oxides. Mechanism for O-atom transfer reaction was investigated via DFT calculations, which revealed that the reaction proceeds via a [2+2] cycloaddition intermediate.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of the study was to examine the cross-sectional association between serum albumin and hyperuricemia (HU). MATERIALS AND METHODS: HU was defined as uric acid ≥ 420 umol/L for the male population and ≥ 357 umol/Lfor the female population. We reviewed the files of 216 consecutive patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy treated at our hospital between 2010 and 2019. The correlation of serum albumin with hyperuricemia and the association between serum uric acid levels and the clinical of Idiopathic membranous nephropathy were assessed by statistical analysis. A multivariable logistic analysis model was applied to test the association after adjusting for a number of potential confounding factors. RESULTS: Triglyceride and serum albumin were higher in the group with hyperuricemia than in the group without hyperuricemia (p = 0.020, p < 0.001, respectively). As serum albumin rose to 1 g/L, the probability for hyperuricemia increased to 17% (adjusted II OR = 1.17, 95% CI (1.02, 1.35), p = 0.0294). A unit increase in serum albumin was associated with an increase of 6.64 g/L in uric acid (adjusted II ß = 6.64, p = 0.0135). Using tertile 1 (T1) for reference, the tertile 3 (T3) group was positively associated with both hyperuricemia (adjusted II OR = 44.21, 95% CI (12.76, 75.67), p = 0.0064) and uric acid (adjusted II ß = 98.64, p = 0.0116). The interaction test showed significant interactions between serum albumin and the body mass index (BMI) when hyperuricemia or uric acid were used to determine the outcomes. The participants with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 had a higher OR between serum albumin and hyperuricemia and had a higher ß between serum albumin and uric acid than those with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (for hyperuricemia: OR = 1.01 vs. 1.18, p for interaction = 0.0056; for uric acid: ß = 0.96 vs. 6.23, p for interaction = 0.0154). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.7615 in the participants with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. The sensitivity and specificity of this point were 47.37% and 95.83%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that serum albumin was positively associated with hyperuricemia and uric acid, especially in obese subjects.

RESUMEN

A microneedle (MN) is a painless and minimally invasive drug delivery device initially developed in 1976. As microneedle technology evolves, microneedles with different shapes (cone and pyramid) and forms (solid, drug-coated, hollow, dissolvable and hydrogel-based microneedles) have been developed. The main objective of this review is the applications of microneedles in biomedical areas. Firstly, the classifications and manufacturing of microneedle are briefly introduced so that we can learn the advantages and fabrications of different MNs. Secondly, research of microneedles in biomedical therapy such as drug delivery systems, diagnoses of disease, as well as wound repair and cancer therapy are overviewed. Finally, the safety and the vision of the future of MNs are discussed.

RESUMEN

To systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Xinmailong Injection in the treatment of heart failure after acute myocardial infarction. Seven Chinese and English databases, namely CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, SinoMed and PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library, were retrieved from the establishment of the database to March 2020. Randomized controlled trials for Xinmailong Injection in the treatment of heart failure after acute myocardial infarction were screened out. Cochrane collaboration network bias risk assessment tool was used to evaluate the literature quality of the studies included, and RevMan 5.3 software was used for Meta-analysis. A total of 926 relevant literatures were retrieved, and 12 studies were finally included, involving 972 patients, including 486 patients in the treatment group and 486 patients in the control group. The quality of the literatures included was generally low. The results of Meta-analysis showed that Xinmailong Injection combined with Western medicine could decrease the levels of BNP(SMD=-5.90, 95%CI[-8.45,-3.36], P<0.000 01) and NT-proBNP(SMD=-2.28, 95%CI[-3.13,-1.43], P<0.000 01) and decrease the levels of cTnI(SMD=-2.91, 95%CI[-4.21,-1.60], P<0.000 1), increase LVEF(MD=4.67, 95%CI[4.19, 5.16], P<0.000 01), increased 6 MWT(MD=73.90, 95%CI[67.51, 80.28], P<0.000 01], decreased LVEDD(MD=-5.46, 95%CI[-9.66,-1.25], P=0.01), reduce the level of serum inflammatory factor(hs-CRP, CRP, IL-6). In terms of safety, less adverse reactions occurred in the study, with no impact on the treatment. The results showed that clinical use of Xinmailong Injection combined with Western medicine in the treatment of heart failure after acute myocardial infarction can further alleviate clinical symptoms and relevant indexes, with less adverse reactions. However, due to the limitations in quantity and quality of the clinical studies included, the positive results can only be used as a hint and reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment, and more high-quality studies are needed to further confirm its efficacy.

RESUMEN

In this paper, the newly isolated tannins were sorted after a review of the literature concerning tannins in recent 10 years, and their research progress was summarized in terms of extraction, isolation, pharmacological activity and metabolism. Hydrolysable tannins and condensed tannins are the main structural types. Modern research shows that tannins have many pharmacological effects, such as bacteriostasis, antioxidation, antitumor, antivirus and blood glucose reduction, and have broad development prospects. They are usually extracted by water, ethanol and acetone and isolated and purified by macroporous resin and gel column chromatography. The packings commonly adopted for the column chromatography mainly included Sephadex LH-20, Diaion HP-20, MCI-gel CHP-20 and Toyopearl HW-40. Modern analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(NMR), fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry(FAB-MS) and circular dichroism(CD) are generally used for the structural identification of tannins. Howe-ver, their isolation, purification and structural identification are still challenging. It is necessary to use a variety of high-throughput screening methods to explore their pharmacological activities and to explore the material basis responsible for their functions through experiments in vivo.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the performance of a liver graft sonographic grading system and point shear wave elastography (PSWE) in predicting early allograft dysfunction (EAD) after liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: Successive brain-dead donors and liver recipients in our hospital from March 2017 to May 2018 were retrospectively recruited. All donors underwent PSWE examination, abdominal ultrasonography, and sonographic grading (grade 0 to grade 5). Donors with ≥ 10 valid PSWE examinations and a failure rate of < 60% were included. For all recipients, abdominal ultrasonography and blood tests for biologic parameters were performed preoperatively and daily postoperatively to screen for EAD. The recipients and their grafts were classified into EAD and non-EAD groups. Statistical analyses were performed to analyze the correlations among liver stiffness (LS), liver graft sonographic grading, and EAD. RESULTS: Thirty-two donors and 32 corresponding liver recipients were enrolled (15 cases in the EAD group; 17 in the non-EAD group). There were no grade 0, 1, or 2 cases in the two groups. For prediction of EAD in recipients after LT, the AUC for PSWE was 0.929 and the AUC for combination of PSWE and sonographic grading system was 0.935. CONCLUSIONS: Combination of PSWE and sonographic grading system can predict postoperative EAD in LT recipients with high sensitivity. Abnormal results may suggest a need for liver biopsy preoperatively, thus avoiding unnecessary surgical preparation for liver procurement. KEY POINTS: • Combination of PSWE with new sonographic grading system is useful for preoperative evaluation of liver grafts from brain-dead donors. • EAD is as a criterion for evaluating the diagnostic value of PSWE and sonographic grading system. • Combination of PSWE and sonographic grading system can predict postoperative EAD in LT recipients with high sensitivity.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Since December 2019, the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has expanded to cause a worldwide outbreak that more than 600,000 people infected and tens of thousands died. To date, the clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients in the non-Wuhan areas of Hubei Province in China have not been described. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and treatment progress of 91 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Jingzhou Central Hospital. RESULTS: Of the 91 patients diagnosed with COVID-19, 30 cases (33.0%) were severe and two patients (2.2%) died. The severe disease group tended to be older (50.5 vs. 42.0 years; p = 0.049) and have more chronic disease (40% vs. 14.8%; p = 0.009) relative to mild disease group. Only 73.6% of the patients were quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)-positive on their first tests, while typical chest computed tomography images were obtained for each patient. The most common complaints were cough (n = 75; 82.4%), fever (n = 59; 64.8%), fatigue (n = 35; 38.5%), and diarrhea (n = 14; 15.4%). Non-respiratory injury was identified by elevated levels of aspartate aminotransferase (n = 18; 19.8%), creatinine (n = 5; 5.5%), and creatine kinase (n = 14; 15.4%) in laboratory tests. Twenty-eight cases (30.8%) suffered non-respiratory injury, including 50% of the critically ill patients and 21.3% of the mild patients. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the mortality rate of patients in Jingzhou was lower than that of Wuhan. Importantly, we found liver, kidney, digestive tract, and heart injuries in COVID-19 cases besides respiratory problems. RESUMEN

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) has two ecotypes, upland and lowland rice, that have been observed to show different tolerance levels under flooding stress. In this study, two rice cultivars, upland (Up221, flooding-intolerant) and lowland (Low88, flooding-tolerant), were initially used to study their molecular mechanisms in response to flooding germination. We observed that variations in the OsCBL10 promoter sequences in these two cultivars might contribute to this divergence in flooding tolerance. Further analysis using another eight rice cultivars revealed that the OsCBL10 promoter could be classified as either a flooding-tolerant type (T-type) or a flooding-intolerant type (I-type). The OsCBL10 T-type promoter only existed in japonica lowland cultivars, whereas the OsCBL10 I-type promoter existed in japonica upland, indica upland and indica lowland cultivars. Flooding-tolerant rice cultivars containing the OsCBL10 T-type promoter have shown lower Ca2+ flow and higher α-amylase activities in comparison to those in flooding-intolerant cultivars. Furthermore, the OsCBL10 overexpression lines were sensitive to both flooding and hypoxic treatments during rice germination with enhanced Ca2+ flow in comparison to wild-type. Subsequent findings also indicate that OsCBL10 may affect OsCIPK15 protein abundance and its downstream pathways. In summary, our results suggest that the adaptation to flooding stress during rice germination is associated with two different OsCBL10 promoters, which in turn affect OsCBL10 expression in different cultivars and negatively affect OsCIPK15 protein accumulation and its downstream cascade.

RESUMEN

Tetrahydroxystilbene glucoside (TSG) is the main water-soluble component in Polygonum multiflorum Thunb, and it has many cardioprotective effects. Although TSG is able to relax blood vessels, its relaxation of rat superior mesenteric arteries and the underlying mechanism of this process are not clearly understood. The aim of the present study was to use in vivo and in vitro models to investigate the arterial relaxation effect of TSG on rat superior mesenteric arteries and the mechanisms involved. We found that TSG concentration-dependently relaxed the superior mesenteric artery with or without endothelium. The vasorelaxation induced by TSG is not related to the vasodilator derived factor NO but is rather by the inhibition of COX-2 activity and decreased TXA2. We also found that the vasorelaxation induced by TSG was attenuated by 4AP. Moreover, TSG also inhibited the contraction induced by an increase in external calcium concentration in Ca2+-free medium plus KCl (60 mM). These results suggest that TSG induces relaxation in mesenteric arterial rings through an endothelium-dependent pathway that involves the inhibition of COX-2 activity and decreased in TXA2 and through an endothelium-independent pathway via opening of a voltage-dependent K+ channel, blockade of Ca2+ influx and release of intracellular Ca2+.

RESUMEN

Zwitterionic hydrogels are promising biomaterials because of their high water content, three-dimensional network structure, and antifouling property. However, it still remains unclear about how mechanical properties of zwitterionic hydrogels affect their antifouling property. In this work, we propose a simple, thermal-pretreatment method to fabricate poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (pSBMA) hydrogels with varied mechanical properties that can be readily tuned by thermal pretreatment time and cross-linker density, as well as to correlate their mechanical property with antifouling property. The resulting thermal-treated pSBMA hydrogels show significantly enhanced mechanical properties with tunable compressive modulus and elastic modulus as compared to the untreated hydrogels. A combination of ELISA investigations and short-term cell adhesion assays also confirm that pSBMA hydrogels exhibit superior antifouling properties to resist protein adsorption and cell adhesion. Further analysis shows a linear inversion correlation between elastic modulus and protein adsorption of pSBMA hydrogels, i.e., the hydrogel with the higher elastic modulus exhibits the lower protein adsorption (the better antifouling property). This work not only provides a simple thermal-pretreatment strategy for fabricating pSBMA hydrogels, but also demonstrates multifunctional properties of the pSBMA hydrogels, which possess a great potential to fulfill some biomedical applications.
