RESUMEN

Giant surfactants have been identified as good candidates to produce sub-10 nm elaborate nanostructures, which could potentially realize complex functions in nanofabrication fields. Our theoretical simulation demonstrates the formation of open layered (pupa-like micelles) and closed layered (onion-like micelles) nanostructures, self-assembled from giant surfactants with comparably sized hydrophilic heads tethered by oligomers in solution. Directed by these simulation results, we synthesized giant surfactants consisting of hydrophilic [60]fullerene heads and oligostyrene (OS7) tails and produced the predicted nanostructures with periods of 9.5, 8.3, and 7.5 nm, experimentally. Adjusting the polarity of the solvent and corresponding concentration changed the nanostructures from onion-like micelles with closed layers to pupa-like micelles with open layers. The different morphologies and periods were caused by solvent inclusion and the overlap of OS chains. The above layered nanostructures remained stable after annealing at 120 °C. This work provides insights that computer simulation can play an important role in assisting the design and construction of complicated nanostructures in giant surfactant systems.

RESUMEN

Novel difunctional initiators that incorporate Förster/fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) pairs are generated to carry out atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene, methyl methacrylate, and n-butyl methacrylate monomers by an efficient manner. Based on the chemical structures of the initiators, the locations of the fluorophore moiety are dictated to be in the center of the chain with accurately quantified chain functionality (>90% labeling ratio). The site-specific integration of FRET dyes into separate polymer chain centers allows for characterization of the well-defined interchain distance quantitatively based on the response between these fluorescent probes. The reliability of this technique is verified in bulk state, which is in well agreement with the theoretical ones. This well-defined FRET system is expected to be a promising candidate to provide a distinct physical image at a microscopic level regarding scaling chain dimension, chain interpenetration, and polymer compatibility.

RESUMEN

Understanding and controlling the glass transition temperature (Tg) and dynamics of polymers in confined geometries are of significance in both academia and industry. Here, we investigate how the thermal stress induced by a mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion affects the Tg behavior of polystyrene (PS) nanorods located inside cylindrical alumina nanopores. The size effects and molecular weight dependence of the Tg are also studied. A multi-step relaxation process was employed to study the relationship between thermal stress and cooling rate. At fast cooling rates, the imparted thermal stress would overcome the yield stress of PS and peel chains off the pore walls, while at slow cooling rates, chains are kept in contact with the pore walls due to timely dissipation of the produced thermal stress during vitrification. In smaller nanopores, more PS chains closely contact with pore walls, then stronger internal thermal stress would be generated between core and shell of PS nanorod, which results in a larger deviation between two Tgs. The core part of PS shows lower Tg than bulk value, which can induce faster dynamics in the center region. A complex and important role stress plays is supposed in complex confinement condition, e.g., in nanopores, during vitrification.

RESUMEN

DNA is a powerful tool that can be attached to nano- and micro-objects and direct the self-assembly through base pairing. Since the strategy of DNA programmable nanoparticle self-assembly was first introduced in 1996, it has remained challenging to use DNA to make powerful diagnostic tools and to make designed materials with novel properties and highly ordered crystal structures. In this review, we summarize recent experimental and theoretical developments of DNA-programmable self-assembly into three-dimensional (3D) materials. Various types of aggregates and 3D crystal structures obtained from an experimental DNA-driven assembly are introduced. Furthermore, theoretical calculations and simulations for DNA-mediated assembly systems are described and we highlight some typical theoretical models for Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations.

RESUMEN

Understanding crystal polymorphism is a long-standing challenge relevant to many fields, such as pharmaceuticals, organic semiconductors, pigments, food, and explosives. Controlling polymorphism of organic semiconductors (OSCs) in thin films is particularly important given that such films form the active layer in most organic electronics devices and that dramatic changes in the electronic properties can be induced even by small changes in the molecular packing. However, there are very few polymorphic OSCs for which the structure-property relationships have been elucidated so far. The major challenges lie in the transient nature of metastable forms and the preparation of phase-pure, highly crystalline thin films for resolving the crystal structures and evaluating the charge transport properties. Here we demonstrate that the nanoconfinement effect combined with the flow-enhanced crystal engineering technique is a powerful and likely material-agnostic method to identify existing polymorphs in OSC materials and to prepare the individual pure forms in thin films at ambient conditions. With this method we prepared high quality crystal polymorphs and resolved crystal structures of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene), including a new polymorph discovered via in situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and confirmed by molecular mechanic simulations. We further correlated molecular packing with charge transport properties using quantum chemical calculations and charge carrier mobility measurements. In addition, we applied our methodology to a [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]1benzothiophene (BTBT) derivative and successfully stabilized its metastable form.

RESUMEN

Solution coating of organic semiconductors offers great potential for achieving low-cost manufacturing of large-area and flexible electronics. However, the rapid coating speed needed for industrial-scale production poses challenges to the control of thin-film morphology. Here, we report an approach--termed fluid-enhanced crystal engineering (FLUENCE)--that allows for a high degree of morphological control of solution-printed thin films. We designed a micropillar-patterned printing blade to induce recirculation in the ink for enhancing crystal growth, and engineered the curvature of the ink meniscus to control crystal nucleation. Using FLUENCE, we demonstrate the fast coating and patterning of millimetre-wide, centimetre-long, highly aligned single-crystalline organic semiconductor thin films. In particular, we fabricated thin films of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene having non-equilibrium single-crystalline domains and an unprecedented average and maximum mobilities of 8.1±1.2 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and 11 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). FLUENCE of organic semiconductors with non-equilibrium single-crystalline domains may find use in the fabrication of high-performance, large-area printed electronics.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we demonstrate our ability to directly probe the molecular structures of the buried polymer/metal interface using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. Spectroscopic data from different experimental approaches were compared and analyzed to deduce the molecular ordering information at a buried polymer/metal interface, i.e. the poly(n-butyl methylacrylate) (PBMA)/silver (Ag) interface. Solid spectroscopic evidence suggested that we successfully detected the molecular vibrational signals generated from the buried PBMA/Ag interface. It was found that the side butyl methyl groups at the PBMA/Ag interface are polar-ordered and have different orientational ordering from those at the PBMA surface in air. We believe that this study will provide a useful experimental and analytical framework for the SFG spectroscopy to probe the buried polymer/metal interfaces in the future.

RESUMEN

Modulating the segmental order in the morphology of conjugated polymers is widely recognized as a crucial factor for achieving optimal electronic properties and mechanical deformability. However, it is worth noting that the segmental order is typically associated with the crystallization process, which can result in rigid and brittle long-range ordered crystalline domains. To precisely control the morphology, a comprehensive understanding of how highly anisotropic conjugated polymers form segmentally ordered structures with ongoing crystallization is essential, yet currently elusive. To fill this knowledge gap, we developed a novel approach with a combination of stage-type fast scanning calorimetry and micro-Raman spectroscopy to capture the series of specimens with a continuum in the polymer percent crystallinity and detect the segmental order in real-time. Through the investigation of conjugated polymers with different backbones and side-chain structures, we observed a generally existing phenomenon that the degree of segmental order saturates before the maximum crystallinity is achieved. This disparity allows the conjugated polymers to achieve good charge carrier mobility while retaining good segmental dynamic mobility through the tailored treatment. Moreover, the crystallization temperature to obtain optimal segmental order can be predicted based on Tg and Tm of conjugated polymers. This in-depth characterization study provides fundamental insights into the evolution of segmental order during crystallization, which can aid in designing and controlling the optoelectronic and mechanical properties of conjugated polymers.

RESUMEN

The temperature-concentration behavior of physical gel by atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (aPMMA) in poly(ethylene glycol) oligomer (PEG400) was investigated. A liquid-liquid demixing interferes with a glass transition during cooling. The combination of demixing and T g leads to the formation of amorphous gels at low temperature. We suggest that the gelation of aPMMA/PEG400 is a glassy gel, in which short-range attractive depletion interaction in the polymer/oligomer system was the driving force at molecular level.

RESUMEN

Melts of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) entangled significantly, suffering processing difficulty. In this work, we prepared partially disentangled UHMWPE by freeze-extracting, exploring the corresponding enchantment of chain mobility. Fully refocused 1H free induction decay (FID) was used to capture the difference in chain segmental mobility during the melting of UHMWPE with different degrees of entanglement by low-field solid-state NMR. The longer the polyethylene (PE) chain is in a less-entangled state, the harder the process of merging into mobile parts after detaching from crystalline lamella during melting. 1H double quantum (DQ) NMR was further used to obtain information caused by residual dipolar interaction. Before melting, the DQ peak appeared earlier in intramolecular-nucleated PE than in intermolecular-nucleated PE because of the strong constraints of crystals in the former one. During melting, less-entangled UHMWPE could keep disentangled while less-entangled high density polyethylene (HDPE) could not. Unfortunately, no noticeable difference was found in DQ experiments between PE melts with different degrees of entanglement after melting. It was ascribed to the small contribution of entanglements compared with total residual dipolar interaction in melts. Overall, less-entangled UHMWPE could reserve its disentangled state around the melting point long enough to achieve a better way of processing.

RESUMEN

This paper provides a viewpoint of the technology of the fast-scanning calorimetry with the relaxation behavior of disordered side chains of poly[2,5-bis(3-dodecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (PBTTT-C12) around the glass transition temperature of the side chains (Tg,γ). PBTTT is an ideal model of the high-performance copolymer of poly(alkylthiophenes) with side chains. The γ1 relaxation process of the disordered side chains of PBTTT was detected as a small endothermic peak that emerges before the γ2 relaxation process. It shows an increase with increasing temperature as it approaches the glass transition temperature of the disordered side chains of PBTTT. The ductile-brittle transition of PBTTT in low temperatures originating from the thermal relaxation process is probed and illustrated by physical aging experiments. The signature is shown that the relaxation process of the disordered side chain of PBTTT at low temperatures varies from Arrhenius temperature dependence to super Arrhenius temperature dependence at high temperatures. These observations could have significant consequences for the stability of devices based on conjugated polymers, especially those utilized for stretchable or flexible applications, or those demanding mechanical robustness during tensile fabrication or use in a low-temperature environment.

RESUMEN

The design and fabrication of functional nanocomposites is an active area of research because composite particles have significantly improved physical and chemical properties over those of their single-component counterparts. Traditionally, chemical pretreatments of the components were used to enhance their physicochemical or chemical interactions. Here, we propose a novel approach to taking advantage of the beauty of thermodynamics. A series of functional materials, including graphene nanosheets, carbon nanotubes, noble metals, magnetic materials, conducting polymers, attapulgite, and etc. were incorporated with polystyrene particles by a thermodynamic driving force. This unique approach is facile and versatile and shows the considerable significance of developments in both scientific methodology and particle engineering.

RESUMEN

Monolayer detection on metal surface requires ultra high sensitivity. Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy (SFG) and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) are regarded as two powerful techniques with submolecular sensitivity to detect adsorbents on metal surface. However, in some cases it's still challenge to characterize molecules or groups with relatively high intramolecular symmetry, such as 4-Nitrothiophenol (4NTP), on flat metal surface even combining these two techniques. Basically, this is due to that 4NTP with para-substituted phenol groups is SFG insensitive while flat metal surface is unfavorable to yield strong SERS enhancement. In this concern, a simple and efficient method, silver mirror method, was employed to facilitate the detection of 4NTP SAM on flat gold surface. Silver nanopheres with diameters around 300 nm was fabricated through silver mirror reaction and in situ formed milky overlayer on top of 4NTP SAM adsorbed on gold surface. Significant enhancement on SERS signal can be achieved with such special assembly structure of the "metal-molecule-metal" system. Generally, the silver mirror method provided a complementary approach to facilitate the spectroscopic applications of molecule level detection on various metal surfaces in situ.

RESUMEN

The anchor effect in nanomolding technology (NMT) refers to the effect that polymer nanorods in nanopores on metal surfaces act as anchors to firmly bond the outside polymer components onto the metal surface. In this work, the influences of thermal treatments on the anchor effect are studied at microscopic level from the perspective of interfacial interaction by a model system (poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) and alumina nanopore composite). The differential scanning calorimeter and fluorescence results indicate that the formation of a dense polymer layer in close contact with the pore walls after proper thermal treatments is the key for a strong interfacial interaction. Such polymer layers were formed in NMT products composed of PBMA and aluminum after slow cooling or annealing, with an up to eighteen-fold improvement of the interfacial bonding strength. The polymer chains near the nanopore walls eliminate the thermal stress induced by the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients through relaxation over time and remain in close proximity with the pore walls during the cooling process of nanomolding. The above dynamic behaviors of the polymer chains ensure the formation of stable interfacial interaction, and then lead to the formation of the anchor effect.

RESUMEN

Gold nanoparticles-coated polystyrene (AuNPs-coated PS) composite particles with raspberry-like morphology are successfully prepared with the aid of a unique thermodynamically driving effect. It is of considerable interest that the AuNPs generate and self-assemble with raw, ordinary PS microspheres that preexist in the oxidation-reduction systems. The synthesized AuNPs-coated PS composite particles have been extensively characterized using scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the morphology of the resultant composite particles is governed by simply changing the amount and type of reductants and the concentration of PS microspheres. The AuNPs-coated PS composite particles also exhibit the good surface-enhanced Raman scattering and catalytic performances.

RESUMEN

Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) are regarded as one of the most promising types of energy storage device in light of the safety, natural abundance, and electrochemical properties of aluminum. However, the rate capabilities of AIBs are limited owing to the sluggish kinetics of chloroaluminate anions. In this study, a covalent organic framework (COF) is adopted as the cathode material in AIBs. Theoretical and experimental results suggest that the COFs allow fast anion diffusion and intercalation without structure collapse, owing to the robust frameworks and the hierarchical pores with a large specific surface area of 1794 m2 g-1 . The resultant AIB exhibits remarkable long-term stability, with a reversible discharge capacity of 150 mAh g-1 after 13 000 cycles at 2 A g-1 . It also shows an excellent rate capability of 113 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 . This work fully demonstrates the potential of COFs in the storage of chloroaluminate anions and other large-sized ions.

RESUMEN

The morphologies and the phase diagram of comb copolymer Am+1(BC)m are investigated by the self-consistent field theory. By changing the volume fractions of the blocks, the interaction parameters between the different blocks, and the side chain number, nine phases are found, including the two-colored lamellar phase, three-colored lamellar phase, hexagonal lattice phase, core shell hexagonal lattice phase, two interpenetrating tetragonal lattice, core shell tetragonal lattice, lamellar phase with beads inside, lamellar phase with alternating beads, and disordered phase. The phase diagrams are constructed for Am+1(BC)m with different side chain numbers of m=1, 2, 3, and 5. Due to the asymmetric topology of comb copolymer Am+1(BC)m, the phases and the diagrams are very different from linear ABC triblock copolymer or star ABC triblock copolymer. When the volume fraction of one of the blocks is the domination, the (core shell) hexagonal phase or two interpenetrating tetragonal lattice can form, depending on which block dominates and the interaction between the blocks. The (core shell) hexagonal phase easily forms at the corner of the block A (fA>or=0.5). The side chain number m affects the phase diagram largely due to the fact that the architecture of a comb copolymer is not invariant under the interchange between the three different monomers. Due to the connectivity of the blocks B and the inner blocks A, Am+1(BC)m comb copolymers with the longer main chain A or longer side chain with short block C, i.e., longer block B, are difficult to phase separate. The results are helpful to design nano- or biomaterials with complex architecture or tailor the phase behavior of comb copolymers.

RESUMEN

Molecular additives are often used to enhance dynamic motion of polymeric chains, which subsequently alter the functional and physical properties of polymers. However, controlling the chain dynamics of semiconducting polymer thin films and understanding the fundamental mechanisms of such changes is a new area of research. Here, cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) are used as conjugated molecular additives to tune the dynamic behaviors of diketopyrrolopyrrole-based (DPP-based) semiconducting polymers. It is observed that the addition of CPPs results in significant improvement in the stretchability of the DPP-based polymers without adversely affecting their mobility, which arises from the enhanced polymer dynamic motion and reduced long-range crystalline order. The polymer films retain their fiber-like morphology and short-range ordered aggregates, which leads to high mobility. Fully stretchable transistors are subsequently fabricated using CPP/semiconductor composites as active layers. These composites are observed to maintain high mobilities when strained and after repeated applied strains. Interestingly, CPPs are also observed to improve the contact resistance and charge transport of the fully stretchable transistors. ln summary, these results collectively indicate that controlling the dynamic motion of polymer semiconductors is proved to be an effective way to improve their stretchability.

RESUMEN

Phase separation of asymmetric diblock copolymer near surfaces in selective solvents is theoretically investigated by using the real-space version of self-consistent field theory (SCFT). Several morphologies are predicted and the phase diagram is constructed by varying the distance between two parallel hard surfaces (or the film thickness) W and the block copolymer concentration f(P). Morphologies of the diblock copolymer in dilute solution are found to change significantly with different film thicknesses. In confined systems, stable morphologies found in the bulk solution become unstable due to the loss of polymer conformation entropy. The vesicle phase region contracts when the repulsive interaction between the blocks is strong (strong segregation regime). The mixture of vesicles, rodlike and spherelike micelles and the mixture of vesicles and sphere-like micelles disappear in contrast to the weakly segregating regime. The walls strongly affect the phase separation of block copolymer in selective solvent, and the depletion layer near the surface contributes much to the micelle formation of the block copolymer. Interestingly, the self-assembled morphologies stay near the walls with the distance on the order of the radius of gyration of the block copolymer. The oscillation of the polymer distribution near the walls allows the surface phase separation to be observed due to the strong repulsion between the blocks A and B.
