BACKGROUND: The Bureau of National Health Insurance in Taiwan implemented a new reimbursement scheme incorporating bone mineral density (BMD) criteria on Jan. 1, 2011. This study aimed to investigate a real-life 11-year secular trend of adherence in new AOMs users and evaluated the change of adherence to AOMs therapy in different urbanization areas after reimbursement criteria were restrained. METHODS: We used Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database to identify new AOMs users as our study population. The AOMs in this study included denosumab, zoledronate, ibandronate, alendronate, raloxifene, and risedronate. The first prescription date of AOMs was defined as the cohort entry date. The adherence rates within one year after initiation were assessed. RESULTS: High adherence (≥75%) in the first year increased markedly after the new reimbursement scheme in 2011, changing from 31.8% in 2008, and 41.7% in 2011 to 54.2% in 2018. On the other hand, low adherence (<25%) decreased from 38.8% in 2008 to 14.6% in 2018. In addition, the switchers increased from 5.9% in 2008 to 9.3% in 2018, indicating a more flexible choice of AOMs. The proportion of high adherence to AOMs was highest in high-urbanization areas, and the proportion increased about two times from 30% in 2008 to 60% in 2018. CONCLUSION: The implementation of new reimbursement criteria in 2011 was associated with increased adherence to AOMs and the increase was most apparent in high-urbanization areas.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease that benefits from many newly developed anti-osteoporosis medications (AOMs). Reimbursement policies need to allocate medical budgets properly based on evidence-based data. This study aimed to investigate the 11-year secular trend, focusing on older age and males in this adjustment wave of the National Health Insurance reimbursement. METHODS: We adopted a nationwide cohort from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Patients undergoing newly initiated AOMs from 2008 to 2018 were included. The AOMs in this study included denosumab, zoledronate, ibandronate, alendronate, raloxifene, and risedronate. Patients <50 years, pathological fractures, missing data, and two AOMs prescribed were excluded. The real-world trends related to subsequent fragility fracture and death within 1 and 3 years were used to evaluate the potential effects due to revision of reimbursement policies. RESULTS: Of 393,092 patients, among them, 336,229 patients met the criteria, whose mean age ranged from 73.3 to 74.4 years, and nearly 80% were female. Further analysis showed a steady increase of AOMs from 5567 (17.1%) and 8802 (27.0%) in 2008-6697 (18.3%) and 10,793 (29.5%) in 2018 for males and 80+ years respectively. The subsequent fragility fracture within one and three years post AOMs initiation was 5.81% and 11.80% in 2018. CONCLUSION: This study showed an immediate drop in AOMs prescription after the implementation of a new stricter reimbursement policy. It took 5 years to return the annual prescription number.

BACKGROUND: Continuing education (CE) is essential for health professionals to improve competence in clinical practice, yet many medical technologists still experience barriers to learning in complex clinical settings. To better manage CE and address medical technologists' learning needs, we developed a learner-centred electronic book (e-book) to promote self-directed learning for medical technologists. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to explore the acceptability and learning impacts of the e-book as CE material for medical technologists in two medical centres in Taiwan. We designed the learner-centred context in the e-book based on medical technologists' practice requirements and learning needs. Moreover, we adopted The New World Kirkpatrick Model with four levels (reactions, learning, behaviours and results) to evaluate the e-book's learning impacts on medical technologists. A total of 280 medical technologists were invited to complete a questionnaire and a post-test, providing learning patterns as well as their satisfaction with the e-book and their learning outcomes after using it. RESULTS: Most readers had positive learning experiences and better learning outcomes, including knowledge acquisition and behavioural change, after reading the e-book. The e-book became a new CE activity and reached medical technologists in various types of laboratories. CONCLUSIONS: The low-cost and learner-centred e-book effectively overcame CE learning barriers for medical technologists. The interactivity and flexibility of e-learning particularly helped learners to engage in clinical scenarios in laboratory medicine. This study could pave the way for medical educators to build a high-quality e-learning model in CE.

BACKGROUND: This study was to perform an economic evaluation to understand clinical outcomes and health resource use between hip fracture patients receiving hospital-based postfracture fracture liaison service (FLS) care and those receiving usual care (UC) in Taiwan. METHODS: This cohort study included hospital-based data of 174 hip fracture patients who received FLS care (FLS group) from National Taiwan University Hospital, and 1697 propensity score-matched patients who received UC (UC group) of National Health Insurance claim-based data. Two groups had similar baseline characteristics but differed in hip fracture care after propensity score matching. Clinical outcomes included refracture-free survival (RFS), hip-refracture-free survival (HRFS), and overall survival (OS). Health resource use included inpatient, outpatient, and pharmacy costs within 2 years follow-up after the index of hip fracture. The economic evaluation of the FLS model was analyzed using the net monetary benefit regression framework based on the National Health Insurance perspective. RESULTS: The FLS group had longer RFS than the UC group, with an adjusted difference of 44.3 days (95% confidence interval: 7.2-81.4 days). Two groups did not differ in inpatient and outpatient costs during follow-up, but the FLS group had a higher expenditure than the UC group on osteoporosis-related medication. The probability of FLS being cost-effective was >80% and of increasing RFS, HRFS, and OS was 95%, 81%, and 80%, respectively, when the willingness-to-pay threshold was >USD 65/gross domestic product per day. CONCLUSION: FLS care was cost-effective in reducing refracture occurrence days for patients initially diagnosed with hip fractures.

ABSTRACT: A 44-year-old female without any systemic diseases had a slowly enlarging anterior neck mass for 1 year. She had received transcervical surgery for a left thyroid cyst 3 years ago. An enhanced computed tomography scan showed a hyper-dense, markedly enhancing, and homogenous mass at the level of the thyrohyoid membrane. under the impression of an ectopic thyroid gland, operation was scheduled. However, she worried about cosmesis pitfalls besides the existing scar from her previous thyroid surgery. Transoral vestibular robotic surgery was arranged to prevent an additional neck incision wound. The mass was removed and confirmed as an ectopic thyroid nodule by pathological examination. No recurrence was found at the 1-year follow-up, and the surgical and aesthetic outcomes were satisfied. The surgery can provide adequate surgical exploration with excellent cosmesis, whereas managing cervical masses. For the cosmetic concerns, this procedure is the potential alternative in other neck surgeries.

Surgical removal is the treatment of choice for second branchial cleft cysts (SBCCs), which are congenital anomalies. The conventional procedure is performed through a transcervical approach, which would lead to a visible scar in the anterior neck. Conversely, the postauricular approach could keep the scar in the hairline or retroauricular sulcus, rendering it almost invisible after the surgery. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the differences between the postauricular and conventional transcervical approaches to SBCC excision. A systematic review was performed using PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library to identify studies comparing outcomes of SBCC surgery via postauricular and conventional transcervical approaches. The data of interest were analyzed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 3). The data of interest were analyzed by calculating the risk difference (RD), the standardized mean difference, and the mean difference (MD) with the 95% confidence interval (CI). Three studies were eligible for the final analysis. The pooled analysis demonstrated that the cosmetic satisfaction score was significantly higher with the postauricular approach (standardized mean difference, 2.12; 95% CI, 0.68-3.56). The operative duration was significantly longer with the postauricular approach than with the conventional transcervical approach (MD, 12.81; 95% CI, 2.39-23.23). The incidences of postoperative marginal mandibular nerve palsy (RD, 0.00; 95% CI, -0.09 to 0.09), bleeding complications (RD, -0.02; 95% CI, -0.09 to 0.05), salivary complications (RD, -0.00; 95% CI, -0.07 to 0.06), cyst size (MD, 0.02; 95% CI, -0.96-0.99), and length of hospital stay (MD, -2.50; CI, -7.30 to 2.30) were comparable between the 2 groups. The postauricular approach is feasible for use in SBCC excision and yields better cosmetic outcomes, a longer operative duration, and a similar rate of complications.

BACKGROUND: The impact of associated chest wall injuries (CWI) on the complications of clavicle fracture repair is unclear to date. This study aimed to investigate the complications after surgical clavicle fracture fixation in patients with and without different degrees of associated CWI. METHODS: A retrospective review over a four-year period of patients who underwent clavicle fracture repair was conducted. A CWI and no-CWI group were distinguished, and the CWI group was subdivided into the minor-CWI (three or fewer rib fractures without flail chest) and complex-CWI (flail chest, four or more rib fractures) subgroup. Demographic data, classification of the clavicle fracture, number of rib fractures, and associated injuries were recorded. Overall complications included surgery-related complications and unplanned hospital readmissions. Univariate analysis and stepwise backward multivariate logistic regression were used to identify potential risk factors for complications. RESULTS: A total of 314 patients undergoing 316 clavicle fracture operations were studied; 28.7% of patients (90/314) occurred with associated CWI. Patients with associated CWI showed a significantly higher age, body mass index, and number of rib fractures. The overall and surgical-related complication rate were similar between groups. Unplanned 30-day hospital readmission rates were significantly higher in the complex-CWI group (p = 0.02). Complex CWI and number of rib fractures were both independent factor for 30-day unplanned hospital readmission (OR 1.59, 95% CI: 1.00-2.54 and OR 1.33, 95% CI: 1.06-1.68, respectively). CONCLUSION: CWI did not affect surgery-related complications after clavicle fracture repair. However, complex-CWI may increase 30-day unplanned hospital readmission rates.

BACKGROUND: Undertriage of major trauma patients is unavoidable, especially in the trauma system of rural areas. Timely stabilization and transfer of critical trauma patients remains a great challenge for hospitals with limited resources. No definitive measure has been proven to improve the outcomes of patients transferred with major trauma. The current study hypothesized that regular feedback on inter-hospital transfer of patients with major trauma can improve quality of care and clinical outcomes. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study retrieved data of transferred major trauma patients with an injury severity score (ISS) > 15 between January 2010 and December 2018 from the trauma registry databank of a tertiary medical center. Regular monthly feedback on inter-hospital transfers was initiated in 2014. The patients were divided into a without-feedback group and a with-feedback group. Demographic data, management before transfer, and outcomes after transfer were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 178 patients were included: 69 patients in the without-feedback group and 109 in the with-feedback group. The with-feedback group had a higher ISS (25 vs. 27; p = 0.049), more patients requiring massive transfusion (14.49% vs. 29.36%, p = 0.036), and less patients with Glasgow Coma Scale ≤8 (30.43% vs. 23.85%, p <  0.001). After adjusting for confounding factors, the with-feedback group was associated with a higher rate of blood transfusion before transfer (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.75; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-7.52; p = 0.049), shorter time span before blood transfusion (- 31.80 ± 15.14; p = 0.038), and marginally decreased mortality risk (aOR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.17-1.09; p = 0.076). CONCLUSION: This study revealed that regular feedback on inter-hospital transfer improved the quality of blood transfusion.

Upregulation of ABCB1/MDR1 (P-gp) and BIRC5/Survivin promotes multidrug resistance in a variety of human cancers. LCL161 is an anti-cancer DIABLO/SMAC mimetic currently being tested in patients with solid tumors, but the molecular mechanism of action of LCL161 in cancer cells is still incompletely understood. It is still unclear whether LCL161 is therapeutically applicable for patients with ABCB1-overexpressing multidrug resistant tumors. In this study, we found that the potency of LCL161 is not affected by the expression of ABCB1 in KB-TAX50, KB-VIN10, and NTU0.017 cancer cells. Besides, LCL161 is equally potent towards the parental MCF7 breast cancer cells and its BIRC5 overexpressing, hormone therapy resistance subline MCF7-TamC3 in vitro. Mechanistically, we found that LCL161 directly modulates the ABCB1-ATPase activity and inhibits ABCB1 multi-drug efflux activity at low cytotoxic concentrations (i.e. 0.5xIC50 or less). Further analysis revealed that LCL161 also decreases intracellular ATP levels in part through BIRC5 downregulation. Therapeutically, co-treatment with LCL161 at low cytotoxic concentrations restored the sensitivity to the known ABCB1 substrate, paclitaxel, in ABCB1-expressing cancer cells and increased the sensitivity to tamoxifen in MCF7-TamC3 cells. In conclusion, LCL161 has the potential for use in the management of cancer patients with ABCB1 and BIRC5-related drug resistance. The findings of our study provide important information to physicians for designing a more "patient-specific" LCL161 clinical trial program in the future.

In this work, we study the crystalline defect induced optical scattering loss inside photonic waveguide. Volume current method is implemented with a close form of dyadic Green's function derived. More specifically, threading dislocation induced scattering loss inside AlN waveguides in UV-visible spectrum wavelengths are studied since this material is intrinsically accompanied with high densities of dislocations (typically on order of 108-1010cm-2). The results from this study reveal that threading dislocations contribute significant amount of scattering loss when material is not MOCVD grown. Additionally, the scattering loss is strongly dependent on polarization and waveguide geometries: TM modes exhibit higher scattering loss compared with TE modes, and the multimode large core waveguides are more susceptible to threading dislocations compared with single mode waveguides and high-aspect-ratio waveguides. Conclusions from this work can be supported by several recently published investigations on III-N based photonic devices. The model derived from this work can also be easily altered to fit other material systems with other types of crystalline defects.

We report the demonstration of a steep-slope field-effect transistor with AlGaN/GaN MIS-HEMTs employing SiO2-based threshold switching devices in series with the source. The SiO2-based threshold switching devices exhibited steep slope when changing resistance states. The integrated steep-slope transistor showed a low subthreshold swing of sub-5 mV/dec with a transition range of over 105 in the transfer characteristics in both sweep directions at room temperature, as well as the low leakage current (10-5 µA µm-1) and a high I ON/I OFF ratio (>107). Moreover, with the SiO2-based threshold switching devices we also observed a positive shift of threshold voltages of the integrated device. Results from more than 50 transfer characteristics measurements also indicate the good repeatability and practicability of such a steep-switching device, where the average steep slopes are below 10 mV/decade. This steep-slope transistor with oxide-based threshold switching devices can be further extended to various transistor platforms like Si and III-V and are of potential interest for the development of power switching and high frequency devices.

This study investigated the anti-obesity effect of a polysaccharide-rich red algae Gelidium amansii hot-water extract (GHE) in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese hamsters. GHE contained 68.54% water-soluble indigestible carbohydrate polymers. Hamsters were fed with a HF diet for 5 weeks to induce obesity, and then randomly divided into: HF group, HF with 3% guar gum diet group, HF with 3% GHE diet group, and HF with orlistat (200 mg/kg diet) group for 9 weeks. The increased weights of body, liver, and adipose in the HF group were significantly reversed by GHE supplementation. Lower plasma leptin, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6 levels were observed in the GHE+HF group compared to the HF group. GHE also increased the lipolysis rate and decreased the lipoprotein lipase activity in adipose tissues. GHE induced an increase in the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the protein expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and uncoupling protein (UCP)-2 in the livers. The decreased triglyceride and total cholesterol in the plasma and liver were also observed in obese hamsters fed a diet with GHE. These results suggest that GHE exerts a down-regulation effect on hepatic lipid metabolism through AMPK phosphorylation and up-regulation of PPARα and UCP-2 in HF-induced obese hamsters.

We report, for the first time, the characterizations on optical nonlinearities of beta-phase gallium oxide (ß-Ga2O3), where both (010) ß-Ga2O3 and (2¯01) ß-Ga2O3 were examined for two-photon absorption coefficient, Kerr nonlinear refractive index, and their polarization dependence. The wavelength dependence of two-photo absorption coefficient and Kerr nonlinear refractive index were also estimated by a widely used analytical model. ß-Ga2O3 exhibits a two photon absorption (TPA) coefficient of 1.2 cm/GW for (010) ß-Ga2O3 and 0.6 cm/GW for (2¯01) ß-Ga2O3. The Kerr nonlinear refractive index is -2.1 × 10-15 cm2/W for (010) ß-Ga2O3 and -2.9 × 10-15 cm2/W for (2¯01) ß-Ga2O3. In addition, ß-Ga2O3 shows stronger in-plane nonlinear optical anisotropy on (2¯01) plane than on (010) plane. Compared with GaN, TPA coefficient of ß-Ga2O3 is 20 times smaller, and the Kerr nonlinear refractive index of ß-Ga2O3 is also found to be 4-5 times smaller. These results indicate that ß-Ga2O3 have the potential for ultra-low loss waveguides and ultra-stable resonators and integrated photonics, especially in UV and visible wavelength spectral range.

BACKGROUND: Although laparoscopic hepatectomy has been proven to be safe and reliable, the influence of tumor size on the feasibility of laparoscopic left lateral segmentectomy (LLLS) is unclear. We retrospectively reviewed our surgical results focusing on hepatic tumor located in the left lateral segment. METHODS: From January 2003 to June 2016, patients who underwent left lateral segmentectomy were retrospectively reviewed, and data were collected on patient characteristics, peri-operative outcomes, and pathologic results. Patients with intrahepatic stone, cystic lesion, or unmeasurable tumor size were excluded. The continuous variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test and categorical variables using the Chi square or Fisher's exact test. The overall and disease-free survival rates were computed using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. RESULTS: A total of 103 patients were enrolled for analysis. Among the patients with tumors larger than 5 cm in the left lateral segment, those who underwent laparoscopic surgery had significantly shorter hospital stay and larger resection margin than those who underwent open surgery. The surgical results of the patients who underwent LLLS were not significantly different from those of the patients with tumors larger than 5 cm. Specifically, the 5-year overall survival and disease-free survival rates of the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) larger than 5 cm who underwent LLLS were comparable to those of the patients who underwent open left lateral segmentectomy. CONCLUSIONS: LLLS is safe and also feasible for hepatic tumors larger than 5 cm. For HCCs larger than 5 cm, the laparoscopic approach yields satisfying oncologic outcomes as the open approach.

We perform comprehensive studies on the fundamental loss mechanisms in III-nitride waveguides in the visible spectral region. Theoretical analysis shows that free carrier loss dominates for GaN under low photon power injection. When optical power increases, the two photon absorption loss becomes important and eventually dominates when photon energy above half-bandgap of GaN. When the dimensions of the waveguides reduce, the sidewall scattering loss will start to dominate. To verify the theoretical results, a high performance GaN-on-sapphire waveguide was fabricated and characterized. Experimental results are consistent with the theoretical findings, showing that under high power injection the optical loss changed significantly for GaN waveguides. A low optical loss ~2 dB/cm was achieved on the GaN waveguide, which is the lowest value ever reported for the visible spectral range. The results and fabrication processes developed in this work pave the way for the development of III-nitride integrated photonics in the visible and potentially ultraviolet spectral range for nonlinear optics and quantum photonics applications.

Background: Previous studies reported that patients who had an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have found that measuring B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) during the subacute phase of left ventricular (LV) remodeling can predict the possible course of LV remodeling. This study assessed the use of serial BNP serum levels combined with early creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) to predict the development of significant LV remodeling in AMI patients. Methods: Nighty-seven patients with new onset AMI were assessed using serial echocardiographic studies and serial measurements of BNP levels, both performed on day-2 (BNP1), day-7 (BNP2), day-90 (BNP3), and day-180 (BNP4) after admission. LV remodeling was defined as >20% increase in biplane LV end-diastolic volume on day-180 compared to baseline (day-2). Results: Patients were divided into LV remodeling [LVR(+)] and non LV remodeling [LVR(-)] groups. No first-week BNP level was found to predict remodeling. However, the two groups had significantly different day-90 BNP level (208.1 ± 263.7 pg/ml vs. 82.4 ± 153.7 pg/ml, P = 0.039) and significantly different 3-month BNP decrease ratios ( R BNP13) (14.4 ± 92.2% vs. 69.4 ± 25.9%, P < 0.001). The appropriate cut-off value for R BNP13 was 53.2% (AUC = 0.764, P < 0.001). Early peak CK-MB (cut-off 48.2 ng/ml; AUC = 0.672; P = 0.014) was another independent predictor of remodeling. Additionally, combining peak CK-MB and R BNP13 offered an excellent discrimination for half-year remodeling when assessed by ROC curve (AUC = 0.818, P < 0.001). Conclusion: R BNP13 is a significant independent predictor of 6-month LV remodeling. The early peak CK-MB additionally offered an incremental power to the predictions derived from serial BNP examinations.

The PAK2/ßPIX/GIT1 (p21-activated kinase 2/PAK-interacting exchange factor-ß/G protein-coupled receptor kinase-interactor 1) complex has been shown to distribute to both membrane ruffles and focal adhesions of cells, where it plays an important role in regulating focal adhesion turnover. However, the detailed mechanism underlying this regulation is largely unknown. We previously reported that MYO18Aα interacts via its carboxyl terminus with the PAK2/ßPIX/GIT1 complex through direct binding to ßPIX, and that knockdown of MYO18Aα in epithelial cells causes accumulation of the complex in focal adhesions and decreased cell migration ability (Hsu et al., 2010). The current study characterized the detailed MYO18Aα-ßPIX interaction mechanism and the biological significance of this interaction. We found that deletion of the carboxyl-terminal globular domain of MYO18Aα profoundly altered the cellular localization of ßPIX and inhibited cell migration. ßPIX interacts through its most carboxyl-terminus, PAWDETNL (639-646), with MYO18Aα and partially colocalized with MYO18Aα in membrane ruffles of cells, whereas ßPIX(1-638), a mutant with deletion of PAWDETNL, accumulated in focal adhesions. Both focal adhesion numbers and area in ßPIX(1-638)-expressing cells were greater than those in cells expressing wild-type ßPIX(FL). Further experiments using deletion mutants of MYO18A and ßPIX showed that disruption of MYO18A-ßPIX interaction not only impaired cell motility but also decreased Rac1 activity. Collectively, our data unravel the interaction regions between MYO18A and ßPIX and provide evidence for the critical role of this interaction in regulating cellular localization of ßPIX, Rac1 activity, and adhesion and migration in epithelial cells.

Organic-inorganic hybrids constitute an important class of functional materials. The fundamentals at the molecular levels are, however, relatively unexplored. PTCDA (perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride) is a colorant and extensively applied in organic-based optoelectronic devices. PTCDA/Cu(111) and Fe-PTCDA/Cu(111) metal-organic hybrid monolayers are studied by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT). The former exhibits Moiré pattern-modulated molecular density of states while the latter adapts a commensurate adlattice. Both imaging and spectroscopic results suggest a strong hybridization between PTCDA molecules and Cu(111) substrate. Weak PTCDA-Cu(111) coupling can be obtained by the introduction of Fe adatoms. Compared to PTCDA/Cu(111), STS spectra of Fe-PTCDA/Cu(111) exhibit a higher energy and sharper features of the frontier orbitals. Together with the DFT results, we found that the PTCDA-Cu(111) coupling is attenuated by the presence of Fe adatoms and Fe-PTCDA coordination.

Pheochromocytomas are cathecholamine-secreting tumor and may present with numerous of general symptoms, such as hypertension,pallor, headache tachycardia, chest pain, and cold sweating. Cardiac manifestations include typical angina, electrocardiographic change, and elevated cardiac biomarker. Transient systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle sometimes may happen with, the worst, heart failure and cardiogenic shock, in a similar manner of apical ballooning syndrome (Tokotsubo or stress cardiomyopathy) and mimics ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Here,we presented a case with past medical record of pheochromocytoma status postsuccessful surgical adrenalectomy many years ago, and she came to the emergency department with angina symptom. As first presentation of acute coronary syndrome via symptoms, electrocardiographic change, and elevated cardiac biomarkers,she underwent coronary angiography. No significant coronary occlusion but regional wall motion abnormality was found. However, a big adrenal mass in the left abdomen and multiple hepatic radiolucent lesions were detected accidentally by the meanwhile computed tomography that supposed to rule out the acute aortic syndrome.Recurrent pheochromocytoma with cathecholamine-related stress cardiomyopathy was confirmed thereafter.

BACKGROUND: Previously, we identified a sequence variant (N375S) of c-Met gene, however, its association with lung cancer risk and prognosis remain undefined. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated the genotype distribution of the c-Met-N375S sequence variant in 206 lung cancer patients and 207 non-cancer controls in the Taiwanese population by DNA sequencing. RESULTS: Lung cancer patients with variant A/G and G/G genotypes showed 1.08-fold increased cancer risk when compared to patients with the wild-type A/A genotype (95% CI, 0.60-1.91). There were no significant differences in postoperative survival between c-Met-N375S and wild-type patients. In the cell model, the c-Met-N375S cells showed a decrease in cell death upon treatment with MET inhibitor SU11274 compared to wild-type cells. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the c-Met-N375S sequence variant may not play a significant role in cancer susceptibility and the prognosis of lung cancer patients. The correlation with chemoresponse of c-Met-N375S is worth further investigation in patients receiving MET therapy.
