RESUMEN

Topological domains in ferroelectrics1-5 have received much attention recently owing to their novel functionalities and potential applications6,7 in electronic devices. So far, however, such topological polar structures have been observed only in superlattices grown on oxide substrates, which limits their applications in silicon-based electronics. Here we report the realization of room-temperature skyrmion-like polar nanodomains in lead titanate/strontium titanate bilayers transferred onto silicon. Moreover, an external electric field can reversibly switch these nanodomains into the other type of polar texture, which substantially modifies their resistive behaviours. The polar-configuration-modulated resistance is ascribed to the distinct band bending and charge carrier distribution in the core of the two types of polar texture. The integration of high-density (more than 200 gigabits per square inch) switchable skyrmion-like polar nanodomains on silicon may enable non-volatile memory applications using topological polar structures in oxides.

RESUMEN

A concise enantioselective total synthesis of (-)-daphenylline, a hexacyclic Daphniphyllum alkaloid with a unique benzene ring, was achieved in 14 steps. The synthesis commences with two chiral stereocenters, C2 and C18, readily installed via Carreira's Ir/amine dual-catalyzed allylation. The allylic bridgehead amine 6 was rapidly prepared through Wickens' photoredox-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of olefin and CuBr2-catalyzed α-amination of ketone. The tetracycle 4 was formed via Pd-catalyzed reductive Heck reaction or, more concisely, by Krische's Rh-catalyzed reductive 1,6-enyne cyclization. In this synthesis, newly reported Wickens' photoredox-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation was used twice, and Friedel-Crafts acylation thrice.

RESUMEN

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg-1) are considered to be one of the most promising secondary batteries. However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is limited by the polysulfides shuttling and unstable lithium metal anodes. Herein, an asymmetric separator (CACNM@PP), composed of Co-Ni/MXene (CNM) on the cathode and Cu-Ag/MXene (CAM) on the anode for high-performance Li-S batteries is reported. For the cathode, CNM provides a synergistic effect by integrating Co, Ni, and MXene, resulting in strong chemical interactions and fast conversion kinetics for polysulfides. For the anode, CAM with abundant lithiophilicity active sites can lower the nucleation barrier of Li. Moreover, LiCl/LiF layers are generated in situ as an ion conductor layer during charging and discharging, inducing a uniform deposition of Li. Therefore, the assembled cells with the CACNM@PP separators harvest excellent electrochemical performance. This work provides novel insights into the development of commercially available high-energy density Li-S batteries with asymmetric separators.

RESUMEN

A frozen-temperature (below -28 °C) laser tuning way is developed to optimize metal halide perovskite (MHP)'s stability and opto-electronic properties, for emitter, photovoltaic and detector applications. Here freezing can adjust the competitive laser irradiation effects between damaging and annealing/repairing. And the ligand shells on MHP surface, which are widely present for many MHP materials, can be frozen and act as transparent solid templates for MHP's re-crystallization/re-growth during the laser tuning. With model samples of different types of CsPbBr3 nanocube arrays,an attempt is made to turn the dominant exposure facet from low-energy [100] facet to high-energy [111], [-211], [113] and [210] ones respectively; selectively removing the surface impurities and defects of CsPbBr3 nanocubes to enhance the irradiation durability by 101 times; and quickly (tens of seconds) modifying a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) boundary into another type of boundary like twinning, and so on. The laser tuning mechanism is revealed by an innovative in situ cryo-transmission electron microscope (cryo-TEM) exploration at atomic resolution.

RESUMEN

Aeromonas dhakensis (A. dhakensis) is becoming an emerging pathogen worldwide, with an increasingly significant role in animals and human health. It is a ubiquitous bacteria found in terrestrial and aquatic milieus. However, there have been few reports of reptile infections. In this study, a bacterial strain isolated from a dead Aldabra giant tortoise was identified as A. dhakensis HN-1 through clinical observation, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS), and gene sequencing analysis. Subsequently, to evaluate its pathogenicity, the detection of virulence genes and mice infection experiments were performed. A. dhakensis HN-1 was found to contain seven virulence genes, including alt, ela, lip, act, aerA, fla, and hlyA. Mice infected with A. dhakensis HN-1 exhibited hemorrhage of varying degrees in multiple organs. The half-maximal lethal dose (LD50) value of A. dhakensis HN-1 for mice was estimated to be 2.05 × 107 colony forming units (CFU)/mL. The antimicrobial susceptibility test revealed that A. dhakensis HN-1 was resistant to amoxicillin, penicillin, ampicillin and erythromycin. This is the first report of A. dhakensis in Aldabra giant tortoises, expanding the currently known host spectrum. Our findings emphasize the need for One Health surveillance and extensive research to reduce the spread of A. dhakensis across the environment, humans, and animals.

RESUMEN

Ferroelectricity in CMOS-compatible hafnia (HfO_{2}) is crucial for the fabrication of high-integration nonvolatile memory devices. However, the capture of ferroelectricity in HfO_{2} requires the stabilization of thermodynamically metastable orthorhombic or rhombohedral phases, which entails the introduction of defects (e.g., dopants and vacancies) and pays the price of crystal imperfections, causing unpleasant wake-up and fatigue effects. Here, we report a theoretical strategy on the realization of robust ferroelectricity in HfO_{2}-based ferroelectrics by designing a series of epitaxial (HfO_{2})_{1}/(CeO_{2})_{1} superlattices. The designed ferroelectric superlattices are defects free, and most importantly, on the base of the thermodynamically stable monoclinic phase of HfO_{2}. Consequently, this allows the creation of superior ferroelectric properties with an electric polarization >25 µC/cm^{2} and an ultralow polarization-switching energy barrier at ∼2.5 meV/atom. Our work may open an avenue toward the fabrication of high-performance HfO_{2}-based ferroelectric devices.

RESUMEN

The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent performance in both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and sulfide oxidation reaction (SOR) remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we experimentally synthesize a NiO/RuO2 p-n heterojunction nanofoam that exhibits highly desirable electrocatalytic properties for both the HER and the SOR. We further design an electrolytic cell by pairing alkaline HER with SOR utilizing the NiO/RuO2 heterojunction nanofoam as both the anode and the cathode, which demands a low applied voltage of 0.846 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the formation of the NiO/RuO2 p-n heterojunction nanofoam effectively regulates the electronic structure, thereby boosting the electrocatalytic performances for both HER and SOR. This work not only provides a novel strategy to prepare an efficient and stable nanofoam electrocatalyst for hydrogen production but also highlights the potential application of oxide heterojunction electrocatalysts in treating sulfur-containing waste liquid.

RESUMEN

Ferroelectricity in two-dimensional (2D) systems generally arises from phonons and has been widely investigated. On the contrary, electronic ferroelectricity in 2D systems has been rarely studied. Using first-principles calculations, the ferroelectric behavior of the buckled blue SiSe monolayer under strain are explored. It is found that the direction of the out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization can be reversed by applying an in-plane strain. And such polarization switching is realized without undergoing geometric inversion. Besides, the strain-triggered polarization reversal emerges in both biaxial and uniaxial strain cases, indicating it is an intrinsic feature of such a system. Further analysis shows that the polarization switching is the result of the reversal of the magnitudes of the positive and negative charge center vectors. And the variation of buckling is found to play an important role, which results in the switch. Moreover, a non-monotonic variation of band gap with strain is revealed. Our findings throws light on the investigation of novel electronic ferroelectric systems.

RESUMEN

Toxoplasma gondii causes lifelong infection in most definitive and intermediate hosts. Clinical cases of toxoplasmosis in captive cheetahs have been reported. However, there are few reports of viable T. gondii strains isolated from cheetahs. Here, T. gondii infection was investigated using molecular and serological assays in cheetahs from China. Modified agglutination test (MAT) (cut-off: 1:25) indicated that all six examined cheetahs (n = 6) showed T. gondii antibodies. Toxoplasma gondii DNA was detected in three out of five cheetahs. Two viable T. gondii strains were isolated from the striated muscles of two cheetahs using mice bioassay. They were designated as TgCheetahCHn1 and TgCheetahCHn2. Genetic characterization of DNA derived from tachyzoites was performed using RFLP-PCR of 10 markers. Toxoplasma gondii TgCheetahCHn1 is ToxoDB PCR-RFLP genotype #319, and the alleles of ROP18/ROP5 types were 3/7. TgCheetahCHn2 is ToxoDB genotype #9, and the alleles of ROP18/ROP5 were 3/6. The average survival time of TgCheetahCHn1-infected Swiss mice was 22 ± 1 days (n = 23), and the mice did not have detectable T. gondii-specific antibodies until 117 ± 30 days post-inoculation (n = 8), therefore, TgCheetahCHn1 had intermediate virulence. TgCheetahCHn2 was avirulent for Swiss mice. Few brain tissue cysts (0-50) were observed in the mice inoculated with TgCheetahCHn1 or TgCheetahCHn2. The results provide direct evidence of cheetah as intermediate host of T. gondii.

RESUMEN

Most catalysts cannot accelerate uninterrupted conversion of polysulfides, resulting in poor long-cycle and high-loading performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, rich p-n junction CoS2 /ZnS heterostructures embedded on N-doped carbon nanosheets are fabricated by ion-etching and vulcanization as a continuous and efficient bidirectional catalyst. The p-n junction built-in electric field in the CoS2 /ZnS heterostructure not only accelerates the transformation of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), but also promotes the diffusion and decomposition for Li2 S the from CoS2 to ZnS avoiding the aggregation of lithium sulfide (Li2 S). Meanwhile, the heterostructure possesses a strong chemisorption ability to anchor LiPSs and superior affinity to induce homogeneous Li deposition. The assembled cell with a CoS2 /ZnS@PP separator delivers a cycling stability with a capacity decay of 0.058% per cycle at 1.0 C after 1000 cycles, and a decent areal capacity of 8.97 mA h cm-2 at an ultrahigh sulfur mass loading of 6 mg cm-2 . This work reveals that the catalyst continuously and efficiently converts polysulfides via abundant built-in electric fields to promote Li-S chemistry.

RESUMEN

Topological spin configurations have been an intriguing topic due to the exotic transport properties and promising applications in spintronic devices. The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials such as CrI3 provides new platforms for manipulating magnetic structures. Here, by first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo methods, we investigated the exchange interaction and magnetic states of 2D van der Waals ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3. By switching the polarization in the ferroelectric In2Se3 layer under an electric field and changing the interlayer distance between CrI3 and In2Se3 under pressure, four spin configurations, ferromagnetic states, topological domain wall skyrmions, topological bimerons, and stripe domains can be realized. These striking tunable magnetic states can be understood from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy parameters being modified by switching the polarization and changing the interlayer distance. Our results of controllable topological/non-topological spin states broaden the spin phenomena and potential of spintronic applications in van der Waals heterostructures.

RESUMEN

Oral infection of mice with several strains of Toxoplasma gondii results in intestinal pathological lesions, which contributes to the invasion of this parasite. However, the exact mechanism is unclear, and only a few strains have been explored. Here, T. gondii TgSheepCHn5 and TgRedpandaCHn1 strains from sheep and red panda were evaluated. The TgSheepCHn5 and TgRedpandaCHn1 strains induced intestinal lesions, loss of Paneth cells, and gut commensal bacteria dysbiosis in Swiss Webster mice. The lesions and loss of Paneth cells were dependent on IFN-γ and gut commensal bacteria during T. gondii infection. Deleting IFN-γ or gut commensal bacteria suppressed the Th1 immune response, alleviated the lesions and parasite loading, and upregulated the number of Paneth cells. Loss of IFN-γ production accelerated mice death, whereas the deletion of gut commensal bacteria enhanced the survival time of the host. The Th1 cell immune responses have positive and negative effects on toxoplasmosis, resistance to T. gondii infection, and acceleration intestine lesions. Adjustment of Th1 cell responses and gut commensal bacteria may be effective treatments for toxoplasmosis.

RESUMEN

Centrosymmetric antiferromagnetic semiconductors, although abundant in nature, seem less promising than ferromagnets and ferroelectrics for practical applications in semiconductor spintronics. As a matter of fact, the lack of spontaneous polarization and magnetization hinders the efficient utilization of electronic spin in these materials. Here, we propose a paradigm to harness electronic spin in centrosymmetric antiferromagnets via Zeeman spin splitting of electronic energy levels-termed as the spin Zeeman effect-which is controlled by an electric field. By symmetry analysis, we identify 21 centrosymmetric magnetic point groups that accommodate such a spin Zeeman effect. We further predict by first principles that two antiferromagnetic semiconductors, Fe_{2}TeO_{6} and SrFe_{2}S_{2}O, are excellent candidates showcasing Zeeman splittings as large as ∼55 and ∼30 meV, respectively, induced by an electric field of 6 MV/cm. Moreover, the electronic spin magnetization associated to the splitting energy levels can be switched by reversing the electric field. Our Letter thus sheds light on the electric-field control of electronic spin in antiferromagnets, which broadens the scope of application of centrosymmetric antiferromagnetic semiconductors.

RESUMEN

The pure culture fermentation has led to less flavorful rice wine and relatively lower bioactive substance level compared to traditional mixed culture fermentation; however, a pure strain is easily controlled by industrialized producers. The purpose of the present research was to screen a species of Rhizopus for improving the flavor deficiency and antioxidant function of sweet rice wine. Seven rice wine samples fermented with isolated strains were analyzed for their total phenolics, total flavonoids, peptide and antioxidant activity using spectrophotometry, as well as ethanol, ethyl acetate, ß-phenethyl alcohol, and volatile alcohol contents measured by headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC), the further principal component analysis determined Rhizopus delemar rice wine better on aroma and antioxidant capacity. A comparison of phenolics profile between R. delemar and R. oryzae rice wines was made based on the measurement data of ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with Q-exactive orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QE-MS) data. Thirty-two phenolics were identified in sweet rice wine. Overall, the results presented in this study showed that a strain of R. delemar is available for the improvement of flavor and antioxidant activity in sweet rice wine, which has the great potential to be applied to industrialized products. RESUMEN

The first total syntheses of bisdehydrotuberostemonine D (8) and putative bisdehydrotuberostemonine E (9), two novel pyrrole Stemona alkaloids, along with the synthesis of bisdehydrotuberostemonine (3) have been completed in 12-13 steps. Our strategy harnesses the power of transition-metal-catalyzed reactions employing Ir, Ru, and Pd, in particular Ir-catalyzed asymmetric allylation of aldehydes, two distinct protocols recently developed by Carreira and Krische, respectively. The threefold use of Ir catalysis, first in the stereodivergent construction of two contiguous stereocenters at C (9,10) and then in rapid formation of the two γ-butyrolactone motifs, enabled the route's efficiency. Through this work, the originally assigned structure of bisdehydrotuberostemonine E (9) should be revised as 18α-bisdehydrotuberostemonine D (8*).

RESUMEN

The common, key tricyclic core of stemona alkaloids parvistemonine (1) and parvistemoline (2), whose synthetic efforts have not reported yet, was constructed through a new strategy in which three contiguous stereogenic centers were set by using Carreira's asymmetric Ir/amine-catalyzed allylation of aldehyde with α-vinylfurfuryl alcohol and Ellman's sulfinamide chiral auxiliary, respectively. The furan ring was especially designed to act as the precursor of the butyrolactone while establishing the significant chirality.

RESUMEN

Cesium lead halide perovskites as ideal photovoltaic and optoelectronics materials have attracted more and more attention. Here, we investigated the structure and electronic properties of halide perovskite CsPbX3 (X = I, Br, Cl) by particle swarm optimization and first principles methods at hydrostatic pressure. For CsPbI3, the structure phases and corresponding phase transitions of non-perovskite orthorhombic Pnma (non-Pv-Pnma), monoclinic C2/m (C2/m-I), and another different monoclinic phase C2/m (C2/m-II) are found in the pressure range 0-120 GPa. The largest piezochromic effect in the perovskites can be predicted in CsPbI3 under a pressure below 10 GPa. The band gap is reduced under pressure and the C2/m-II phase becomes a metal under pressures larger than 65 GPa. For CsPbBr3 and CsPbCl3, the same phase sequence under pressure, i.e. from perovskite Pnma (Pv-Pnma), to non-Pv-Pnma, C2/m-I, and then to another orthorhombic Cmcm phase, is found. The newly discovered non-Pv-Pnma phase gives an excellent explanation of previous measurements at low pressure for CsPbBr3 and CsPbCl3. Furthermore, the calculations of electronic properties show that pressure is an effective means to tune the band gap. Our calculations and results extend the applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics of halide perovskites.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to analyse global metabolomic changes associated with trans-resveratrol (RSV) treatment in mice with cryptorchidism using untargeted metabolomics. Cryptorchidism was established surgically in Kunming mice, which were then treated with 20µg g-1 day-1, s.c., RSV for 35 consecutive days. Typical manifestations of spermatogenesis arrest were seen in mice with cryptorchidism, and RSV treatment for 35 days restored spermatogenesis. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to profile the metabolome of testes from mice in the control (non-cryptorchid, untreated), cryptorchid and RSV-treated cryptorchid groups. In all, 1386 and 179 differential metabolites were detected in the positive and negative modes respectively. Seven and six potential biomarkers were screened for spermatogenesis arrest and restoration respectively. Pathway analysis showed changes in 197 metabolic pathways. The hexosamine biosynthesis pathway was inhibited in the cryptorchid group, which probably resulted in a decrease in the end product, uridine diphosphate N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc). Immunoblot analysis showed that total testicular protein O-linked ß-N-acetylglucosamine glycosylation was related to spermatogenesis arrest, further indicating a decrease in UDP-GlcNAc in the cryptorchid group. Thus, untargeted metabolomics revealed the biochemical pathways associated with the restoration of metabolic status in the cryptorchid group following RSV treatment and the findings could be used to monitor the response to RSV treatment. This study provides a meaningful foundation for the future clinical application of RSV in the treatment of spermatogenesis dysfunction.

RESUMEN

This study aims to examine the effect of the non-Saccharomyces yeast Saccharomycopsis fibuligera on the sensory quality and flavour characteristics of a sweet rice alcoholic beverage. The strain S. fibuligera was isolated from a traditional Chinese hand-made starter with the purpose to improving sweet rice wine fragrance. Here, sweet rice wines were produced by six combinations of three species of fermentation strains, including S. fibuligera, Rhizopus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, for evaluation. The study results showed significant diversities within these rice wines based on indicators including the score of quantitative descriptive analysis and volatile variety and content as well as odour activity value (OAV). Quantitative results showed that 43 volatile compounds were identified by headspace-solid phase microextraction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry among samples. Based on the principal component analysis and OAV calculation, the two samples (S-2 and S-3) fermented with S. fibuligera and Rhizopus possessed high scores and were distinguished from the others, and ethyl butanoate, ethyl hexanoate, ß-phenylethyl alcohol and 1-octen-3-one with high OAVs were responsible for the key aroma of sweet rice wine fermented with S. fibuligera. Co-inoculating S. fibuligera, Rhizopus or/and S. cerevisiae generated more pleasant aroma compounds in a sweet rice alcoholic beverage than when inoculated individually.
