RESUMEN

Optoelectronic devices consist of heterointerfaces formed between dissimilar semiconducting materials. The relative energy-level alignment between contacting semiconductors determinately affects the heterointerface charge injection and extraction dynamics. For perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the heterointerface between the top perovskite surface and a charge-transporting material is often treated for defect passivation1-4 to improve the PSC stability and performance. However, such surface treatments can also affect the heterointerface energetics1. Here we show that surface treatments may induce a negative work function shift (that is, more n-type), which activates halide migration to aggravate PSC instability. Therefore, despite the beneficial effects of surface passivation, this detrimental side effect limits the maximum stability improvement attainable for PSCs treated in this way. This trade-off between the beneficial and detrimental effects should guide further work on improving PSC stability via surface treatments.

Background: The Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee (CPAK) classification system has been developed as a comprehensive system that describes 9 coronal plane phenotypes based on constitutional limb alignment and joint line obliquity (JLO). Due to the characteristics of Asian populations, which show more varus and wider distribution in lower limb alignment than other populations, modification of the boundaries of the arithmetic hip-knee-ankle angle (aHKA) and JLO should be considered. The purpose of this study was to determine the knee phenotype in a Korean population based on the original CPAK and modified CPAK classification systems. Methods: We reviewed prospectively collected data of 500 healthy and 500 osteoarthritic knees between 2021 and 2023 using radiographic analysis and divided them based on the modified CPAK classification system by widening the neutral boundaries of the aHKA to 0° ± 3° and using the actual JLO as a new variable. Using long-leg standing weight-bearing radiographs, 6 radiographic parameters were measured to evaluate the CPAK type: the mechanical HKA angle, medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), aHKA, JLO, and actual JLO. Results: From 2 cohorts of 1,000 knees, the frequency distribution representing all CPAK types was different between the healthy and arthritic groups. The most common categories were type II (38.2%) in the healthy group and type I (53.8%) in the arthritic group based on the original CPAK classification. The left and upward shift in the distribution of knee phenotypes in the original classification was corrected evenly after re-establishing the boundaries of a neutral aHKA and the actual JLO. According to the modified CPAK classification system, the most common categories were type II (35.2%) in the healthy group and type I (38.0%) in the arthritic group. Conclusions: Although the modified CPAK classification corrected the uneven distribution seen when applying the original classification system in a Korean population, the most common category was type I in Korean patients with osteoarthritic knees in both classification systems. Furthermore, there were different frequencies of knee phenotypes among healthy and arthritic knees.

BACKGROUND: The hip-to-calcaneus axis, previously known as the ground mechanical axis (GA), ideally passes through the center of the knee joint in the native knee. The aim of this study was to elucidate, with use of hip-to-calcaneus radiographs, changes in knee and hindfoot alignment and changes in outcomes following high tibial osteotomy (HTO). METHODS: We reviewed the records for 128 patients who underwent HTO between 2018 and 2020. Patients were stratified into 2 groups, a hindfoot valgus group (n = 94) and a hindfoot varus group (n = 34), on the basis of their preoperative hindfoot alignment. The hindfoot alignment was evaluated with use of the hindfoot alignment angle (HAA). To evaluate lower-limb alignment, full-length standing posteroanterior hip-to-calcaneus radiographs were utilized to measure 4 radiographic parameters preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively: the hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle, hip-knee-calcaneus (HKC) angle, and the weight-bearing line (WBL) ratios of the mechanical axis (MA) and GA. RESULTS: The mean HAA improved significantly from 5.1° valgus preoperatively to 1.9° valgus postoperatively in the hindfoot valgus group (p < 0.001). In contrast, in the hindfoot varus group, the HAA showed no meaningful improvement in the coronal alignment of the hindfoot following HTO (p = 0.236). The postoperative mean HKC angle in the hindfoot varus group was 2° more varus than that in the hindfoot valgus group (1.0° versus 3.0°; p = 0.001), and the GA in the hindfoot varus group passed across the knee 8.0% more medially than that in the hindfoot valgus group (55% versus 63% from the most medial to the most lateral part of the tibial plateau). The hindfoot varus group had worse postoperative clinical outcomes than the hindfoot valgus group in terms of the mean Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for pain and American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Ankle-Hindfoot Score. CONCLUSIONS: Although our findings did not provide sufficient evidence to establish clinically relevant differences between the groups, they indicated that the group with a preoperative fixed hindfoot varus deformity had a higher rate of undercorrection and worse clinical outcomes, especially pain, following HTO. Therefore, modification of the procedure to shift the GA more laterally may be required for these patients. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic Level III . Fluorinated polyimides (PIs) are among the most promising candidates for gate dielectric materials in organic electronic devices because of their solution processability and outstanding chemical, mechanical, and thermal stabilities. Additionally, fluorine (F) substitution improves the electrical properties of PI thin films, such as enhanced dielectric properties and reduced surface trap densities. However, the relationship between the fluorination density of PIs and crystal growth modes of vacuum-deposited conjugated molecules on PI thin films, which is directly related to the lateral charge transport along the PI-organic semiconductor interface, has not been systematically studied. Herein, five different soluble PIs with different F densities were synthesized, and the correlation between fluorination and thin-film properties was systematically investigated. Not only were their dielectric properties modulated, but the growth modes of the organic molecules deposited on the PI thin films also changed with increasing surface F density. This phenomenon was observed by both surface and crystallographic analyses, which resulted in extremely high operational stability of field-effect transistors and the successful fabrication of organic complementary circuits. We believe that the correlation between PI backbone fluorination and its thin-film properties will provide practical insights into the material design based on controlled molecular directed surface assembly on fluorinated polymer dielectrics.

The field of biomimetic electronics that mimic synaptic functions has expanded significantly to overcome the limitations of the von Neumann bottleneck. However, the scaling down of the technology has led to an increasingly intricate manufacturing process. To address the issue, this work presents a one-shot integrable electropolymerization (OSIEP) method with remote controllability for the deposition of synaptic elements on a chip by exploiting bipolar electrochemistry. Condensing synthesis, deposition, and patterning into a single fabrication step is achieved by combining alternating-current voltage superimposed on direct-current voltage-bipolar electropolymerization and a specially designed dual source/drain bipolar electrodes. As a result, uniform 6 × 5 arrays of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) channels are successfully fabricated on flexible ultrathin parylene substrates in one-shot process. The channels exhibited highly uniform characteristics and are directly used as electrochemical synaptic transistor with synaptic plasticity over 100 s. The synaptic transistors have demonstrated promising performance in an artificial neural network (NN) simulation, achieving a high recognition accuracy of 95.20%. Additionally, the array of synaptic transistor is easily reconfigured to a multi-gate synaptic circuit to implement the principles of operant conditioning. These results provide a compelling fabrication strategy for realizing cost-effective and disposable NN systems with high integration density.

Achieving high mobility and bias stability is a challenging obstacle in the advancement of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). To this end, the fabrication of high-quality organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films is critical for OTFTs. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been used as growth templates for high-crystalline OSC thin films. Despite significant research progress in the growth of OSC on SAMs, a detailed understanding of the growth mechanism of the OSC thin films on a SAM template is lacking, which has limited its use. In this study, the effects of the structure (thickness and molecular packing) of SAM on the nucleation and growth behavior of the OSC thin films were investigated. We found that disordered SAM molecules assisted in the surface diffusion of the OSC molecules and resulted in a small nucleation density and large grain size of the OSC thin films. Moreover, a thick SAM with disordered SAM molecules on the top was found to be beneficial for the high mobility and bias stability of the OTFTs.

PURPOSE: This study examined the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in South Korean children and adolescents by gender and age and analyzed gender-specific factors associated with MetS. METHODS: This study used data on children aged 10-18 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2010 to 2015. Analyses included descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, the x 2 test, and univariate logistic regression analysis (p<.050). RESULTS: The prevalence of MetS was 4.8% in boys and 3.4% in girls. The prevalence was higher in girls up to the age of 12, but higher in boys who were 13 or older. Abdominal obesity was frequent in girls, whereas low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and elevated blood pressure were more common in boys. Higher body mass index, waist-to-height ratio, waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, HDL-C, perceived "fat" body shape, and weight loss efforts were associated with MetS in both genders. Increasing age, having one meal per day, and weight maintenance were associated factors unique to boys. Fasting plasma glucose, familial medical history of low HDL-C, and perceived "thin" body shape were associated factors in girls. CONCLUSION: Gender and age differences should be considered in the risk assessment and prevention of MetS.

Feedback circuits are crucial dynamic motifs which occur in many biomolecular regulatory networks. They play a pivotal role in the regulation and control of many important cellular processes such as gene transcription, signal transduction, and metabolism. In this study, we develop a novel computationally efficient method to identify feedback loops embedded in intracellular networks, which uses only time-series experimental data and requires no knowledge of the network structure. In the proposed approach, a non-parametric system identification technique, as well as a spectral factor analysis, is applied to derive a graphical criterion based on non-causal components of the system's impulse response. The appearance of non-causal components in the impulse response sequences arising from stochastic output perturbations is shown to imply the presence of underlying feedback connections within a linear network. In order to extend the approach to nonlinear networks, we linearize the intracellular networks about an equilibrium point, and then choose the magnitude of the output perturbations sufficiently small so that the resulting time-series responses remain close to the chosen equilibrium point. In this way, the impulse response sequences of the linearized system can be used to determine the presence or absence of feedback loops in the corresponding nonlinear network. The proposed method utilizes the time profile data from intracellular perturbation experiments and only requires the perturbability of output nodes. Most importantly, the method does not require any a priori knowledge of the system structure. For these reasons, the proposed approach is very well suited to identifying feedback loops in large-scale biomolecular networks. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated via two examples: a synthetic network model with a negative feedback loop and a nonlinear caspase function model of apoptosis with a positive feedback loop.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to identify the prevalence of menstrual disorders in Korean women based on body mass index (BMI) and lifestyle factors, by utilizing the Korean National Health Insurance Database. METHODS: A retrospective observational study design was used for the secondary data analysis. Data of women aged 15 to 49 years who were diagnosed with menstrual disorders were extracted from The National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort in Korea from 2009 to 2016. The age-standardized prevalence rate of menstrual disorders was calculated using SAS version 9.4, and a Chi-square test and Cochran-Armitage test were performed. RESULTS: In total, 2,219,445 cases were extracted from the database. The prevalence of menstrual disorders significantly increased from 8.6% to 11.6% (Z=135.16, p for trend <.001) over the past eight years. In particular, it was higher in underweight women than in women with normal weight across all years (Z=-4.18~-14.72, p<.001). Moreover, statistically significant differences in the prevalence of menstrual disorders were found to be associated with drinking and smoking in all years and with physical activity levels in part (p<.05~.001). CONCLUSION: These findings present compelling evidence on the prevalence of menstrual disorders based on a national database. Since the prevalence of menstrual disorders has steadily increased and differs based on BMI and lifestyle factors, educational and clinical interventions are necessary to promote risk awareness and appropriate behavioral changes among Korean women.

We investigated whether changes in adiponectin levels over time predict incident metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a population-based prospective study. In total, 1110 subjects were categorized into four groups according to their sex-specific median baseline adiponectin levels and the change in adiponectin levels at follow-up: low baseline adiponectin and decreased adiponectin during follow-up (LB&DF), low baseline adiponectin and increased adiponectin during follow-up (LB&IF), high baseline adiponectin and decreased adiponectin during follow-up (HB&DF), and high baseline adiponectin and increased adiponectin during follow-up (HB&IF). During the median 2.4-year follow-up period, 180 (16.2%) subjects developed MetS. Compared to the LB&DF group, the fully adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) for incident MS was the lowest in the HB&IF group (0.33, (0.17-0.63)), followed by the HB&DF group (0.58, (0.40-0.84)) and LB&IF group (0.63, (0.41-0.93)). This phenomenon was more prominent in men than in women. Among the individual MetS components, increased adiponectin levels during follow-up were significantly associated with lower risks of incident low high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and incident high blood pressure. This finding suggests that a change in adiponectin level, as well as the baseline adiponectin level, might have a clinical role in the development of MetS among men.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the injury patterns of noncatastrophic accidents by individual age groups. METHODS: Data were collected from the Korean In-Depth Accident Study database based on actual accident investigation. The noncatastrophic criteria were classified according to U.S. experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendations for field triage guidelines of high-risk automobile crash criteria by vehicle intrusions more than 12 in. on occupant sites (including the roof) and more than 18 in. on any site. The Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) was used to determine injury patterns for each body region. Severely injured patients were classified as Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale (MAIS) 3 or higher. RESULTS: In this study, the most significant injury regions were the head and neck, extremities, and thorax. In addition, the incidence of severe injury among elderly patients was nearly 1.6 times higher than that of non-elderly patients. According to age group, injured body regions among the elderly were the thorax, head and neck, and extremities, in that order. For the non-elderly groups, these were head and neck, extremities, and thorax. Severe injury rates were slightly different for the elderly group (head and neck, abdomen) and non-elderly group (thorax, head and neck). CONCLUSIONS: In both age groups, the rate of severe injury is proportional to an increase in crush extent zone. Front airbag deployment may have a relatively significant relationship to severe injuries.
