RESUMEN

When laser radiation is skilfully applied, atoms and molecules can be cooled1-3, allowing the precise measurements and control of quantum systems. This is essential for the fundamental studies of physics as well as practical applications such as precision spectroscopy4-7, ultracold gases with quantum statistical properties8-10 and quantum computing. In laser cooling, atoms are slowed to otherwise unattainable velocities through repeated cycles of laser photon absorption and spontaneous emission in random directions. Simple systems can serve as rigorous testing grounds for fundamental physics-one such case is the purely leptonic positronium11,12, an exotic atom comprising an electron and its antiparticle, the positron. Laser cooling of positronium, however, has hitherto remained unrealized. Here we demonstrate the one-dimensional laser cooling of positronium. An innovative laser system emitting a train of broadband pulses with successively increasing central frequencies was used to overcome major challenges posed by the short positronium lifetime and the effects of Doppler broadening and recoil. One-dimensional chirp cooling was used to cool a portion of the dilute positronium gas to a velocity distribution of approximately 1 K in 100 ns. A major advancement in the field of low-temperature fundamental physics of antimatter, this study on a purely leptonic system complements work on antihydrogen13, a hadron-containing exotic atom. The successful application of laser cooling to positronium affords unique opportunities to rigorously test bound-state quantum electrodynamics and to potentially realize Bose-Einstein condensation14-18 in this matter-antimatter system.

RESUMEN

Despite advances, challenges remain for less invasive imaging of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) using computed tomography (CT) angiography. The application of dual-energy imaging to PAOD has been reported to improve the diagnostic accuracy of this application; however, severe arteriosclerosis with heavy arterial wall calcification still hampers definitive lesion characterisation, especially in distal and smaller arteries. Recently an ultra-high resolution scanner has been introduced. In combination with advances in post-processing, such as subtraction techniques, these developments may overcome some of the current challenges and allow far more detailed characterisation of PAOD non-invasively. The aim of this review is to describe our current experience with ultra-high resolution CT in combination with subtraction and discuss the potential advantages of their application for peripheral angiography.

Reports have detailed the increasing use of spinal instrumentation in the treatment of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis, with the aims of achieving a lower pseudoarthrosis rate and restoring spinal alignment. However, controversy remains over the use of instrumentation in the presence of active infection because of concerns about increased bacterial adherence and biofilm formation on the metallic implant surface. Fourteen consecutive patients were followed who were diagnosed as having pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis and underwent surgery with spinal instrumentation with iodine-containing surfaces that could be directly supported to existing titanium implants. Bone-cage interfaces and implant-related complications after surgery were evaluated. The white blood cell (WBC) count and C-reactive protein (CRP) level were analyzed during the follow-up period. To confirm the influence of iodine release from the implant, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and free thyroxine (FT4) were also examined. The infection subsided in all 14 patients. Both WBC counts and CRP levels returned to normal ranges by the final follow-up. One patient showed a lucent area around the screw and two patients showed lucencies inside the cage. However, no cage dislocations, cage migrations, or screw pull-outs were noted, and all patients' FT3, FT4, and TSH levels were within normal ranges during the follow-up period. We demonstrated the efficacy of iodine-supported titanium implants in the management of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis. No cytotoxicity or adverse effects were noted in this series.

OBJECTIVE: To study the pharmacological effects of Gel-200, cross-linked hyaluronate. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We examined the chondroprotective, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Gel-200 in experimental animal models for osteoarthritis (OA) and in a human synovial sarcoma cell line and normal human articular chondrocytes. RESULTS: In the OA model, a single-dose intra-articular (IA) injection of Gel-200 significantly suppressed cartilage degeneration and reduced synovitis of the knee joint. In the joint pain model, Gel-200 significantly suppressed pain responses for 4 weeks after injection. The residual property of Gel-200 in the knee joint tissue was investigated in rabbits. The mean residual ratio of injected Gel-200 in the synovium was 3.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.4-4.2) at 28 days after the injection. The long-lasting analgesic effect of Gel-200 might be explained by its high residual ratio in the joint. In addition, we investigated the mechanism of action of Gel-200 in a human synovial sarcoma cell line and normal human articular chondrocytes. Gel-200 inhibited IL-1ß-induced production of MMP-1, 3 and 13 in human chondrocytes and production of prostaglandin E2 in human synoviocytes in a concentration-dependent manner, respectively. CONCLUSION: A single-dose IA injection of Gel-200 exerts chondroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects in the experimental OA model, and long-lasting analgesia in the joint pain model, suggesting the beneficial multimodal function of Gel-200 against symptomatic OA patients.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the biocompatibility and immunogenicity of two intra-articular hyaluronan formulations, Gel-200 (Gel-One(®)) and hylan G-F 20 (Synvisc(®) series). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: A comparison of the biocompatibility of Gel-200 and hylan G-F 20 was made using a rat subcutaneous air pouch model and the knee joint of normal rabbits. Immunogenicity was evaluated using a homologous passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) assay in guinea pigs. RESULTS: In the air pouch model in rats, characteristic fibrous belts formed in the subcutaneous tissue. Injection of hylan G-F 20 into the air pouch induced granulomatous nodules primarily composed of macrophages, multinucleated giant cells, and eosinophils accompanied with the test material in the center of the nodules in the fibrous belt. Furthermore, the thickness of the fibrous belt in the hylan G-F 20 group increased significantly compared to the saline group. Injection of Gel-200 into the air pouch induced neither granulomatous inflammation nor significant thickening of fibrous belt, while foamy macrophages containing the test material were observed. Intra-articular injection of hylan G-F 20 into the rabbit knee joints induced granulomatous inflammation, eosinophil infiltration, and significant increase in the number of cells in the synovial fluid, while these findings were absent in the Gel-200 group. In the immunogenicity assay, hylan G-F 20 induced a positive PCA reaction, but the Gel-200 did not. CONCLUSION: Gel-200 showed more favorable biocompatibility and less immunogenicity compared to hylan G-F 20. Gel-200 is expected to be a single injection hyaluronan product with less safety concerns for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA) pain.

INTRODUCTION: Ependymomas are neuroepithelial neoplasms of the central nervous system that arise from the precursor cells lining the ventricular system and the central canal of the spinal cord. Herein, we report a case of an extremely rare type of ependymoma arising from the thigh. Then, a literature review was performed. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 87-year-old female Japanese patient presented with a chief complaint of a mass on the medial aspect of her right thigh. Pathology revealed a grade 2 extra-neural ependymoma. PET-CT and brain MRI showed no neoplastic lesions in the central nervous system, and the tumor was localized only in the right thigh. The tumor was growing and was treated as a low-grade tumor with extensive resection and postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient has been alive for 3 years, without postoperative recurrence or complications. DISCUSSION: This case presents a rare extra-neural ependymoma of central nervous system origin arising in the thigh. The pathogenesis is unknown, but a search for neoplastic lesions in the cerebrospinal cord is warranted. Extra-neural ependymomas should be treated as low-grade tumors because they are more prone to recurrence and metastasis than ordinary ependymomas. CONCLUSION: We experienced an extremely rare extra-neural ependymoma arising in the thigh. A search for tumors in the central nervous system region of the cerebrospinal cord, previous literature, and clinical, imaging, and pathological findings should be consulted to determine a treatment strategy.

We have found a series of resonances associated with the bound state (polyexcitons, PE(N)s) of N excitons up to N=6 in the emission spectra of diamond under two-photon excitation at around 10 K. Time-resolved spectra show a stepwise formation of PE(N)s with smaller to larger N, as well as a successive decay from larger to smaller N. At higher excitation levels, the transformation of PE(N)s into a condensed phase of electron-hole droplets occurs. The binding energies of the PE(N)s, normalized to the exciton Rydberg energy, agree well with those of silicon, suggesting the universality of the phenomena.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Patellar bone tumors are very rare, and most are benign or of intermediate type. In this report, we describe our experience of a metastatic patellar bone tumor caused by gastric cancer, which resembled a very rare primary or secondary aneurysmal bone cyst and review the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old man presented with severe pain in the patellar region and marked limitation of the knee joint range of motion. He had a history of gastric cancer; however, epidemiological, clinical, and imaging findings led us to strongly suspect an aneurysm-like bone cyst. Thus, we performed bone tumor curettage and autologous artificial bone grafting without biopsy because of the severe pain. Pathology results showed gastric cancer metastasis; hence, patellectomy and patellar tendon augmentation with femoral fascia were performed. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score was taken postoperatively to assess pain and function. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: We experienced a very rare gastric cancer-related metastatic patellar bone tumor, which resembled a primary or secondary aneurysmal bone cyst in frequency and imaging findings. Patellectomy was ultimately performed, and the patient's MSTS score improved markedly. CONCLUSION: Despite its very low frequency, patellar metastatic bone tumors must be taken into account without being misled by the frequency or imaging findings and a biopsy should necessarily be performed.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether aldosterone/Rho/Rho-kinase pathway contributed to obesity-associated nephropathy. SUBJECTS: C57BL/6J mice were fed a high fat or low fat diet, and mice on a high fat diet were treated with a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, eplerenone. RESULTS: The mice on a high fat diet not only developed obesity, but also manifested renal histological changes, including glomerular hypercellularity and increased mesangial matrix, which paralleled the increase in albuminuria. Furthermore, enhanced Rho-kinase activity was noted in kidneys from high fat diet-fed mice, as well as increased expressions of inflammatory chemokines. All of these changes were attenuated by eplerenone. In high fat diet-fed mice, mineralocorticoid receptor protein levels in the nuclear fraction and SGK1, an effector of aldosterone, were upregulated in kidneys, although serum aldosterone levels were unaltered. Furthermore, aldosterone and 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in renal tissues were upregulated in high fat diet-fed mice. Finally, in cultured mesangial cells, stimulation with aldosterone enhanced Rho-kinase activity, and pre-incubation with eplerenone prevented the aldosterone-induced activation of Rho kinase. CONCLUSION: Excess fat intake causes obesity and renal injury in C57BL/6J mice, and these changes are mediated by an enhanced mineralocorticoid receptor/Rho/Rho-kinase pathway and inflammatory process. Mineralocorticoid receptor activation in the kidney tissue and the subsequent Rho-kinase stimulation are likely to participate in the development of obesity-associated nephropathy without elevation in serum aldosterone levels.

We demonstrate a scheme for efficient generation of a 5.9 eV coherent light source with an average power of 23 mW, 0.34 meV linewidth, and 73 MHz repetition rate from a Ti: sapphire picosecond mode-locked laser with an output power of 1 W. Second-harmonic light is generated in a passive optical cavity by a BiB(3)O(6) crystal with a conversion efficiency as high as 67%. By focusing the second-harmonic light transmitted from the cavity into a ß-BaB(2)O(4) crystal, we obtain fourth-harmonic light at 5.9 eV. This light source offers stable operation for at least a week. We discuss the suitability of the laser light source for high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy by comparing it with other sources (synchrotron radiation facilities and gas discharge lamp).

Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are considered innate-like lymphocytes, and regulate the immunity against inflammation and tumorigenesis. However, the impact of iNKT cells in inflammation-associated tumorigenesis remains unclear. In this study, we examined the physiological role of iNKT cells in a mouse colitis-associated colorectal cancer model. C57BL/6 (B6) and Jα18 NKT cell-deficient KO (KO) mice were used. Colitis-associated colorectal cancer was induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). The resulting inflammation and tumours were examined. The surface markers of mononuclear cells from the liver and the colon were assessed by FACS. The levels of IL-13 from the colon were measured by ELISA. α-galactosylceramide (GC), or its close analog OCH, was administered intraperitoneally on the first day of each cycle of DSS-administration. In the AOM/DSS model, hepatic iNKT cells were significantly decreased. In KO mice there were significantly greater numbers of colon tumours and more severe inflammation than in B6 mice. FACS analysis revealed that the population of NK1.1 (+) T cells (non-invariant NKT cells) in the colon was increased when compared to B6 mice. The secretion of IL-13 was increased in the colon of KO mice after AOM/DSS. The number of colon tumours was significantly decreased in the GC-treated group compared to the control group. GC-treatment significantly inhibited IL-13 secretion from the colonic mononuclear cells and the number of colonic NK1.1 (+) T cells was significantly decreased. These results suggest that iNKT cells may play a critical role in the prevention of tumour progression and inflammation in the AOM/DSS model.

We investigated the expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and IGF-1 type 1 receptor (IGF-1R) in skeletal muscle fiber types in chickens with hepatic fibrosis induced by bile duct ligation (BDL). Eleven hens, approximately 104 weeks old, were randomly assigned to BDL (n = 4) and sham surgery (SHAM; n = 7) groups. In BDL hens, histopathology revealed marked bile duct proliferation and liver fibrosis. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of myofibers from both the pectoralis (PCT) muscles significantly decreased in the BDL group compared with the SHAM group (P < 0.01). In contrast, the CSA of myofibers from the femorotibialis lateralis (FTL) muscle did not decrease in the BDL group. Type I fibers were large, round, and hypertrophic. Elongated type IIA and IIB fibers were also present. For IGF-1 immunostaining, the immunoreaction intensity was higher in the PCT in the BDL group than the SHAM group. Within the BDL group, type I fibers from FTL had a stronger immunoreaction intensity than the type II fibers. For IGF-1R immunostaining, the intensity of the immunoreactions was similar within the PCT in the BDL group compared with the SHAM group. For FTL, type I fibers had stronger reactions to IGF-1R than type II fibers in the BDL group. These results suggest that type I fibers express both IGF-1 and IGF-1R and become hypertrophic in chickens with hepatic fibrosis.

RESUMEN

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft investigated the C-type (carbonaceous) asteroid (162173) Ryugu. The mission performed two landing operations to collect samples of surface and subsurface material, the latter exposed by an artificial impact. We present images of the second touchdown site, finding that ejecta from the impact crater was present at the sample location. Surface pebbles at both landing sites show morphological variations ranging from rugged to smooth, similar to Ryugu's boulders, and shapes from quasi-spherical to flattened. The samples were returned to Earth on 6 December 2020. We describe the morphology of >5 grams of returned pebbles and sand. Their diverse color, shape, and structure are consistent with the observed materials of Ryugu; we conclude that they are a representative sample of the asteroid.

Mutations in two regions of hepatitis C virus (HCV) have been implicated in influencing response to interferon (IFN) therapy. Substitutions in the NS5A region of HCV have been associated with response to IFN therapy, and this region has been known as the IFN sensitivity-determining region (ISDR). The mutations in the core region of HCV have also been reported to predict IFN response. The aim of this study was to investigate whether amino acid substitutions in the core region and ISDR among patients with HCV genotype 1b affect the response to IFN therapy. A total of 213 patients who completed IFN treatment were randomly selected. All patients received pegylated-IFN-alpha 2b once each week, plus oral ribavirin daily for 48 weeks. Of the 213 patients, 117 (54.9%) showed early virologic response (EVR), with HCV-negativity, at 12 weeks. Factors related to EVR on multivariate analysis were non-Gln70 and Leu91 in the core region, and ISDR mutant-type. One hundred and two (47.9%) showed a sustained virologic response (SVR). SVR occurred more frequently in patients without Gln70 (55.4%) than in those with Gln70 (21.3%) (P < 0.0001). SVR was achieved in 43.6% of patients with wild-type ISDR and 62.5% of patients with mutant-type (P = 0.0227). Of the 34 patients who simultaneously had non-Gln70 and mutant-type ISDR, 26 (76.5%) achieved SVR. Factors related to SVR on multivariate analysis were non-Gln70 and ISDR mutant-type. In conclusion, amino acid substitutions in the core region and ISDR were useful for predicting the response to IFN in patients with HCV genotype 1b.

Ganoderma lucidum Karst is well known as 'Reishi', a traditional food in China and Japan. It contains a polysaccharide component known to induce granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) production from murine splenocytes. Moreover, GM-CSF may be a therapeutic agent for Crohn's disease. In this study, we investigated the water-soluble, polysaccharide components of Reishi (designated as MAK) in murine colitis induced by trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS). We examined the concentration of GM-CSF in peritoneal macrophage cells (PMs) of C57BL/6 mice during in vitro and in vivo stimulation with MAK. After feeding with chow or MAK for 2 weeks, 2 mg of TNBS/50% ethanol was administered to each mouse. After 3 days of TNBS treatment, intestinal inflammation was evaluated, and mononuclear cells of the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) and colon were cultured for ELISA. To determine the preventive role of GM-CSF, the mice were pre-treated with or without anti-GM-CSF antibody before TNBS administration. In vitro and in vivo MAK-stimulated PMs produced GM-CSF in a dose-dependent manner. Intestinal inflammation by TNBS was improved by feeding with MAK. MLNs of mice treated with TNBS produced IFN-γ, which was inhibited by feeding with MAK. In contrast, MLNs of mice treated with TNBS inhibited GM-CSF production, which was induced by feeding with MAK. The colon organ culture assay also revealed that IFN-γ was decreased and GM-CSF was increased by MAK. The preventive effect was blocked by the neutralization of GM-CSF. We concluded that the induction of GM-CSF by MAK may provide the anti-inflammatory effect.

Adhesion of tumor cells to host cell layers and subsequent transcellular migration are pivotal steps in cancer invasion and metastasis. The small GTPase Rho controls cell adhesion and motility through reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and regulation of actomyosin contractility. Cultured rat MM1 hepatoma cells migrate through a mesothelial cell monolayer in vitro in a serum-dependent, Rho-mediated manners. Among several proteins isolated as putative target molecules of Rho, the ROCK (ROK) family of Rho-associated serine-threonine protein kinases are thought to participate in the induction of focal adhesions and stress fibers in cultured cells, and to mediate calcium sensitization of smooth muscle contraction by enhancing phosphorylation of the regulatory light chain of myosin. Transfection of MM1 cells with cDNA encoding a dominant active mutant of ROCK conferred invasive activity independently of serum and Rho. In contrast, expression of a dominant negative, kinase-defective ROCK mutant substantially attenuated the invasive phenotype. A specific ROCK inhibitor (Y-27632) blocked both Rho-mediated activation of actomyosin and invasive activity of these cells. Furthermore, continuous delivery of this inhibitor using osmotic pumps considerably reduced the dissemination of MM1 cells implanted into the peritoneal cavity of syngeneic rats. These results indicate that ROCK plays an essential part in tumor cell invasion, and demonstrate its potential as a therapeutic target for the prevention of cancer invasion and metastasis.

AIM: Peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor gamma co-activator-1 alpha (PGC-1α) plays a role not only as an activator of mitochondrial biogenesis, but also as a suppressor of inflammatory cytokines, which induce chronic diseases. Therefore, increasing PGC-1α expression can be one of the important factors for preventing chronic diseases. PGC-1α expression is activated by adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and cAMP dependent kinase. The activity of these enzymes depends on the exercise intensity. Therefore, this study compared the effects of two different exercise intensities (above lactate threshold (LT) and below LT) with an equal amount of energy expenditure on PGC-1α gene expression in human skeletal muscle. METHODS: Six young men participated in this study. They performed exercise at 120% and 80% LT intensity. The duration of the 120% LT exercise was 60 minutes and the duration of the session performed at 80% LT was calculated to yield equal energy expenditure as the 120% LT intensity exercise. Skeletal muscle was obtained after 1 hour of exercise. RESULTS: The working rate, % peak VO2 and HR during exercise were significantly higher in at 120% LT than at 80% LT. PGC-1α gene expression was not significantly different between control (0.087; 0.026-0.284 (the median; inter quartile range)) and 80% LT (0.171; 0.030-0.484). However, PGC-1α gene expression after 120% LT (0.441; 0.121-4.643) was significantly higher than in the control. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that PGC-1α gene expression depends on exercise intensity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial hemorrhage due to hyperperfusion syndrome is a severe carotid artery stent placement complication of extremely high-grade stenosis, causing hemodynamic insufficiency. To prevent hyperperfusion syndrome, we attempted intentional residual stent stenosis and implemented "gentle" carotid artery stent placement, defined as carotid artery stent placement using a closed-cell stent coupled with slight balloon predilation, without balloon postdilation. Gradual stent expansion was expected. We investigated the incidence of hyperperfusion syndrome and long-term outcomes after gentle carotid artery stent placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included patients who underwent carotid artery stent placement for extremely high-grade stenosis from January 2015 to March 2019. We defined extremely high-grade stenosis as carotid stenosis with conventional angiographic "slow flow" and a reduced MCA signal intensity on MRA. A reduced MCA signal intensity was defined as MCA with a relative signal intensity of <0.9 in the ipsilateral compared with the contralateral MCA. We evaluated the stent diameter, CBF on SPECT, hyperperfusion syndrome, and intracranial hemorrhage. We defined hyperperfusion syndrome as a triad of ipsilateral headache, seizure, and hemiparesis. RESULTS: Twenty-eight of the 191 patients met our inclusion criteria. After carotid artery stent placement, their median minimal stent diameter was 2.9 mm, which expanded to 3.9 mm at 4 months. Neither cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome nor intracranial hemorrhage occurred. CONCLUSIONS: The gentle carotid artery stent placement strategy for intentional residual stent stenosis may prevent hyperperfusion syndrome in high-risk patients. Stents spontaneously dilated in 4 months.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease are advised to undergo selective revascularization surgery based on cerebral hemodynamics. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays for the detection of reduced CBF in such patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients underwent brain perfusion SPECT and pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using standard postlabeling delay (1525 ms) and Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays. For Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays, based on data obtained from the 7 sub-boluses with combinations of different labeling durations and postlabeling delays, CBF corrected by the arterial transit time was calculated on a voxel-by-voxel basis. Using a 3D stereotaxic template, we automatically placed ROIs in the ipsilateral cerebellar hemisphere and 5 MCA territories in the symptomatic cerebral hemisphere; then, the ratio of the MCA to cerebellar ROI was calculated. RESULTS: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for detecting reduced SPECT-CBF ratios (<0.686) was significantly greater for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios (0.885) than for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratios (0.786) (P = .001). The sensitivity and negative predictive value for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios were 100% (95% confidence interval, 100%-100%) and significantly higher than the sensitivity (95% CI, 44%-80%) and negative predictive value (95% CI, 88%-97%) for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratio, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: ASL MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays may be applicable as a screening tool because it can detect reduced CBF on brain perfusion SPECT with 100% sensitivity and a 100% negative predictive value in adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease.

1. Androgen receptor (AR) expression and morphological changes in blood capillaries were investigated in the comb of cockerels, both untreated controls and after the administration of testosterone (T) or the androgen antagonist flutamide (F) for 7 weeks. 2. Twenty-six male Single Comb White Leghorn roosters were divided into T-treated, F-treated and untreated groups. Tissue sections were examined histologically, immunohistochemically, and comb blood vessel castings were analysed by scanning electron microscopy. 3. Histologically, the capillaries of the peripheral dermis layer in the T-treated group were dilated compared with controls. Many red blood cells were seen in the lumen. Although the capillary diameter in the F-treated group did not show a significant difference as compared with control, blood capillaries with small diameters were often observed, and there were few red blood cells in the capillaries. Some capillary castings were extended markedly in the T treated group, and small blood vessels were observed arborising from the extended blood capillaries. In contrast, all capillaries were slender in the F-treated group, and the casting surface was rough. 4. Immunoreactivity for AR was found in capillary endothelial cells in the peripheral dermis layer of the comb. The intensity of staining in these cells was increased in the T-treated group but was reduced in the F-treated group. 5. It is concluded that immunoreactivity for AR was found in capillary endothelial cells in the peripheral dermis layer of the rooster's comb. The intensity of staining in these cells was increased in the T-treated group but reduced in the F-treated group. Thus, the capillary endothelial cells in the peripheral dermis layer of the comb are androgen targets.
