RESUMEN

Interface phonon modes that are generated by several atomic layers at the heterointerface play a major role in the interface thermal conductance for nanoscale high-power devices such as nitride-based high-electron-mobility transistors and light-emitting diodes. Here we measure the local phonon spectra across AlN/Si and AlN/Al interfaces using atomically resolved vibrational electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope. At the AlN/Si interface, we observe various interface phonon modes, of which the extended and localized modes act as bridges to connect the bulk AlN modes and bulk Si modes and are expected to boost the phonon transport, thus substantially contributing to interface thermal conductance. In comparison, no such phonon bridge is observed at the AlN/Al interface, for which partially extended modes dominate the interface thermal conductivity. This work provides valuable insights into understanding the interfacial thermal transport in nitride semiconductors and useful guidance for thermal management via interface engineering.

RESUMEN

We have developed a Tf2O-mediated approach for the direct amination of either P(O)-OH or P(O)-H reagents with a variety of aliphatic or aromatic amines. Without the requirement of precious metals and toxic reagents, this protocol provides an alternative route to various phosphinamides and phosphoramides. The reaction proceeds under simple and mild conditions and can be effectively scaled up with similar efficiency.

RESUMEN

The coal-dominated electricity system, alongside increasing industrial electricity demand, places China into a dilemma between industrialization and environmental impacts. A practical solution is to exploit air quality and health cobenefits of industrial energy efficiency measures, which has not yet been integrated into China's energy transition strategy. This research examines the pivotal role of industrial electricity savings in accelerating coal plant retirements and assesses the nexus of energy-pollution-health by modeling nationwide coal-fired plants at individual unit level. It shows that minimizing electricity needs by implementing more efficient technologies leads to the phaseout of 1279 hyper-polluting units (subcritical, <300 MW) by 2040, advancing the retirement of these units by an average of 7 years (3-16 years). The retirements at different locations yield varying levels of air quality improvements (9-17%), across six power grids. Reduced exposure to PM2.5 could avoid 123,100 pollution-related cumulative deaths over the next 20 years from 2020, of which ∼75% occur in the Central, East, and North grids, particularly coal-intensive and populous provinces (e.g., Shandong and Jiangsu). These findings provide key indicators to support geographically specific policymaking and lay out a rationale for decision-makers to incorporate multiple benefits into early coal phaseout strategies to avoid lock-in risk.

RESUMEN

Early-morning off periods, causing early-morning akinesia, can lead to significant motor and nonmotor morbidity in levodopa-treated fluctuating Parkinson's disease (PD) cases. Despite validated bedside scales in clinical practice, such early-morning off periods may remain undetected unless specific wearable technologies, such as the Parkinson's KinetiGraph™ (PKG) watch, are used. We report five PD cases for whom the PKG detected early-morning off periods that were initially clinically undetected and as such, untreated. These five cases serve as exemplars of this clinical gap in care. Post-PKG assessment, clinicians were alerted and targeted therapies helped abolish the early-morning off periods.

RESUMEN

Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) is a highly prevalent endocrine and reproductive disorder characterized by ovulatory dysfunction, hyperandrogenism(HA), and polycystic ovarian morphology(PCOM). It is often accompanied by insulin resistance(IR), obesity, and metabolic disorders and can lead to cardiovascular diseases, endometrial carcinoma and many other late complications, seriously affecting the physical and mental health and quality of life in premenopausal women. The etiology of PCOS is still unknown and many scholars assume that mitochondrial dysfunction may represent a major pathogenic factor in PCOS in recent years. With a holistic view, treatment based on syndrome differentiation, and multi-system and multi-target treatment manner, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) can mitigate the symptoms and signs of PCOS from multiple aspects. Although there have been reviews on the mechanism of mitochondrial dysfunction in PCOS, there is still a lack of reviews on the intervention of mitochondrial function by TCM to treat PCOS. Therefore, this paper focuses on the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in PCOS and summarizes the studies about the TCM intervention of PCOS by regulating the mitochondrial function, inflammation, oxidative stress(OS), autophagy, and apoptosis in the last five years, aiming to shed new light on the prevention and treatment of PCOS with TCM.

RESUMEN

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly malignant primary brain tumour with a poor prognosis in adults. Identifying biomarkers that can aid in the molecular classification and risk stratification of GBM is critical. Here, we conducted a transcriptional profiling analysis of T-cell immunity in the tumour microenvironment of GBM patients and identified two novel T cell exhaustion (TEX)-related GBM subtypes (termed TEX-C1 and TEX-C2) using the consensus clustering. Our multi-omics analysis revealed distinct immunological, molecular and clinical characteristics for these two subtypes. Specifically, the TEX-C1 subtype had higher infiltration levels of immune cells and expressed higher levels of immune checkpoint molecules than the TEX-C2 subtype. Functional analysis revealed that upregulated genes in the TEX-C1 subtype were significantly enriched in immune response and signal transduction pathways, and upregulated genes in the TEX-C2 subtype were predominantly associated with cell fate and nervous system development pathways. Notably, patients with activated T-cell activity status in the TEX-C1 subgroup demonstrated a significantly worse prognosis than those with severe T cell exhaustion status in the TEX-C2 subgroup. Finally, we proposed a machine-learning-derived novel gene signature comprising 12 TEX-related genes (12TexSig) to indicate tumour subtyping. In the TCGA cohort, the 12TexSig demonstrated the ability to accurately predict the prognosis of GBM patients, and this prognostic value was further confirmed in two independent external cohorts. Taken together, our results suggest that the TEX-derived subtyping and gene signature has the potential to serve as a clinically helpful biomarker for guiding the management of GBM patients, pending further prospective validation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: High-power short-duration (HPSD) ablation strategy has emerged as a popular approach for treating atrial fibrillation (AF), with shorter ablation time. The utilized Smart Touch Surround Flow (STSF) catheter, with 56 holes around the electrode, lowers electrode-tissue temperature and thrombus risk. Thus, we conducted this prospective, randomized study to investigate if the HPSD strategy with STSF catheter in AF ablation procedures reduces the silent cerebral embolism (SCE) risk compared to the conventional approach with the Smart Touch (ST) catheter. METHODS: From June 2020 to September 2021, 100 AF patients were randomized 1:1 to the HPSD group using the STSF catheter (power set at 50 W) or the conventional group using the ST catheter (power set at 30 to 35 W). Pulmonary vein isolation was performed in all patients, with additional lesions at operator's discretion. High-resolution cerebral diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (hDWI) with slice thickness of 1 mm was performed before and 24-72 h after ablation. The incidence of new periprocedural SCE was defined as the primary outcome. Cognitive performance was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test. RESULTS: All enrolled AF patients (median age 63, 60% male, 59% paroxysmal AF) underwent successful ablation. Post-procedural hDWI identified 106 lesions in 42 enrolled patients (42%), with 55 lesions in 22 patients (44%) in the HPSD group and 51 lesions in 20 patients (40%) in the conventional group (p = 0.685). No significant differences were observed between two groups regarding the average number of lesions (p = 0.751), maximum lesion diameter (p = 0.405), and total lesion volume per patient (p = 0.669). Persistent AF and CHA2DS2-VASc score were identified as SCE determinants during AF ablation procedure by multivariable regression analysis. No significant differences in MoCA scores were observed between patients with SCE and those without, both immediately post-procedure (p = 0.572) and at the 3-month follow-up (p = 0.743). CONCLUSIONS: Involving a small sample size of 100 AF patients, this study reveals a similar incidence of SCE in AF ablation procedures, comparing the HPSD strategy using the STSF catheter to the conventional approach with the ST catheter. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT04408716. AF = Atrial fibrillation, DWI = Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, HPSD = High-power short-duration, ST = Smart Touch, STSF = Smart Touch Surround Flow.

RESUMEN

We realize collective enhancement and suppression of light scattered by an array of tweezer-trapped ^{87}Rb atoms positioned within a strongly coupled Fabry-Pérot optical cavity. We illuminate the array with light directed transverse to the cavity axis, in the low saturation regime, and detect photons scattered into the cavity. For an array with integer-optical-wavelength spacing each atom scatters light into the cavity with nearly identical scattering amplitude, leading to an observed N^{2} scaling of cavity photon number as the atom number increases stepwise from N=1 to N=8. By contrast, for an array with half-integer-wavelength spacing, destructive interference of scattering amplitudes yields a nonmonotonic, subradiant cavity intensity versus N. By analyzing the polarization of light emitted from the cavity, we find that Rayleigh scattering can be collectively enhanced or suppressed with respect to Raman scattering. We observe also that atom-induced shifts and broadenings of the cavity resonance are precisely tuned by varying the atom number and positions. Altogether, tweezer arrays provide exquisite control of atomic cavity QED spanning from the single- to the many-body regime.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between 2-h post-load minus fasting plasma glucose (2hPG-FPG) and 1-year clinical outcomes, such as death, stroke recurrence, and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) ≥2-3 among acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients without diabetes mellitus (DM) history. METHODS: 1,214 AIS patients without DM history, obtained from ACROSS-China, were divided into 4 quartiles, based on 2hPG-FPG measurements obtained 14 days post-admission. Four models were constructed using multivariate Cox and logistic regression analyses, based on the inclusion of age, gender, trial of ORG 10172 in acute stroke treatment, NIH Stroke Scale scores (model 1), plus 10 other clinical parameters (model 2), plus newly diagnosed DM (NDDM) post-admission (model 3), plus 2hPG and FPG (model 4). Associations found from those 4 models between 2hPG-FPG and 1-year clinical outcomes were confirmed via stratification, multiplicative interaction, sensitivity, and restricted cubic spline analyses. RESULTS: The highest quartile of 2hPG-FPG, after adjusting for variables, such as stroke severity (model 2), was independently associated with death, stroke recurrence, and mRS ≥2-3 (odds ratio [OR] = 3.95, 2.96, 4.15, and 4.83, respectively, all p < 0.0001). Increased 2hPG-FPG remained independently associated with mRS ≥2-3 in models 3-4, as well as increased mRS ≥2 under stratification analyses among both non-NDDM and NDDM patients. CONCLUSION: 2hPG-FPG is a relatively specific indicator of poorer 1-year clinical prognoses among AIS patients, independent of NDDM, 2hPG, and FPG post-hospital admission. Therefore, the oral glucose tolerance test could be a useful approach for detecting a higher likelihood for developing poorer prognoses among patients without DM history.

RESUMEN

Facing significant carbon emissions annually, China requires a clear decarbonization strategy to meet its climate targets. This study presents a MESSAGEix-CAEP model to explore Chinese decarbonization pathways and their cost-benefit under two mitigation scenarios by establishing connections between five energy-intensive sectors based on energy and material flows. The results indicated the following: 1) Interaction and feedback between sectors should not be disregarded. The electrification process of the other four sectors was projected to increase electricity production by 206%, resulting in a higher power demand than current forecasts. 2) The marginal abatement cost to achieve carbon neutrality across all five sectors was 2189 CNY/tCO2, notably higher than current Chinese carbon emission trading prices. 3) The cost-benefit analysis indicates that a more ambitious abatement strategy would decrease the marginal abatement cost and result in a higher net carbon abatement benefit. The cumulative net benefit of carbon reduction was 7.8 trillion CNY under ambitious mitigation scenario, 1.3 trillion CNY higher than that under current Chinese mitigation scenario. These findings suggest that policy-makers should focus on the interaction effects of decarbonization pathways between sectors and strengthen their decarbonization efforts to motivate early carbon reduction.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia often delay treatment. This issue is not fully understood, particularly in low-and middle-income countries. This study aimed to elucidate the prevalence, risk factors and multiple outcomes of treatment delay in schizophrenia in a Chinese metropolis. METHODS: A two-stage whole cluster sampling survey was conducted in Beijing, China in 2020. A total of 1,619 patients with schizophrenia were included. Heterogeneity between groups and the changing trend of treatment delay were presented. Regression modelling methods were used to examine both the risk factors for treatment delay and related outcomes at individual and family levels. RESULTS: The median treatment delay for schizophrenia was 89 days (about 13 weeks). 49.35% surveyed patients delayed treatment for more than three months. Early age of onset, low level of education, living in well developed districts were important risk factors. Treatment delay in schizophrenia was significantly associated with patients' poor medication adherence, comorbidity status and poor social functioning. It also increased the negative impact of the illness on families. CONCLUSIONS: This study accumulated evidence of treatment delay in schizophrenia in China. It occurs even in the metropolis where mental health resources are relatively adequate. Further targeted interventions to raise public awareness should be crucial to reduce treatment delay.

RESUMEN

This study compared and analyzed the genetic diversity and population structure of exon 2 of the DQB1 gene and 13 autosomal neutral microsatellite markers from 14 Chinese goat breeds to explore the potential evolutionary mechanism of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). A total of 287 haplotypes were constructed from MHC-DQB1 exon 2 from 14 populations, and 82 nucleotide polymorphic sites (SNPs, 31.78%) and 172 heterozygous individuals (79.12%) were identified. The FST values of the microsatellites and MHC-DQB ranged between 0.01831-0.26907 and 0.00892-0.38871, respectively. Furthermore, 14 goat populations showed rich genetic diversity in the microsatellite loci and MHC-DQB1 exon 2. However, the population structure and phylogenetic relationship represented by the two markers were different. Positive selection and Tajima's D test results showed the occurrence of a diversified selection mechanism, which was primarily based on a positive and balancing selection in goat DQB. This study also found that the DQB sequences of bovines exhibited trans-species polymorphism (TSP) among species and families. In brief, this study indicated that positive and balancing selection played a major role in maintaining the genetic diversity of DQB, and TSP of MHC in bovines was common, which enhanced the understanding of the MHC evolution.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Investigating students' learning styles can generate useful information that can improve curriculum design. This study adopts diverse measures to identify the learning styles of students despite limited literature related to clinical medical students in China. We utilized Felder's Index of Learning Styles to examine the learning style characteristics of clinical medical students at Inner Mongolia Minzu University. METHODS: Cluster sampling (probability sampling) was used. This cross-sectional study investigated clinical medicine students with regard to their learning style preference and the difference across genders. This study also analysed data collected from other published studies. A total of 411 students from the medical school at Inner Mongolia Minzu University completed the Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire. The questionnaire assessed the learning styles of students in four dimensions: visual-verbal learning, sequential-global learning, active-reflective leaning, and sensing-intuitive learning. RESULTS: The analysis results show that clinical medicine students choose to receive visual information (73.97% of the student sample) instead of verbal information. These students prioritize sensory information (67.15%) rather than intuitive information and process reflective information (51.82%) rather than active information. They prefer to process information sequentially (59.85%) instead of globally. Our results also show that male students present a higher preference for an active learning style over a reflective learning style, while female students seem to present a higher preference for a reflective learning style over an active learning style. These preferences vary between cohorts (gender), but the difference is not statistically significant. Compared to data collected from other published studies, active, visual, sensing, and sequential are the most popular styles of learning adopted by medical science students. CONCLUSIONS: The identification of medical students' learning style in China provides information that medical educators and others can use to make informed choices about modification, development and strengthening of medical educational programs. Our outcomes may potentially improve motivation, engagement and deep learning in medical education when used as a supplement to teaching/learning activities.

RESUMEN

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is a rare soft tissue tumour subtype, and those arising from the spine are even rarer. To the best of our knowledge, only 3 cases with the spine as the primary site of SEF have been previously reported. We report a 61-year-old female who presented with backache and bilateral leg numbness for 3 years, worsened over the last three months. Pathological fracture of the L1 vertebra was detected, and soft tissue density in the spinal canal and left vertebral body margin was also seen on contrast CT. She underwent tumour resection via a posterior approach, decompression, bone grafting, fusion, and internal fixation. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of SEF.

RESUMEN

Groundwater drought monitoring relies on ground observation data, which cannot be used to reflect large-scale droughts in groundwater resources. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Satellite (GRACE) improved the situation and provided a new solution for groundwater drought research. However, the propagation relationship among global different drought types has not been fully explored. We employed CRU precipitation data, MERR2 reanalysis soil moisture data, GLDAS and GRACE data to calculate SPI (Standardized precipitation index), SSI (Standardized soil moisture index), SRI (Standardized runoff index), and GDI (Groundwater drought index), characterizing meteorological, agricultural, surface water and groundwater droughts, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient was adopted to study the propagation time of these four types of droughts. The results showed that the average propagation times for the different drought types are meteorological drought to surface water drought (3.5 months), meteorological drought to agricultural drought (5.7 months), agricultural drought to groundwater drought (12.97 months), surface water drought to groundwater drought (13.78 months), and meteorological drought to groundwater drought (14.47 months) from longest to shortest. (2) Climate conditions had a significant impact on the propagation time of different drought types. Low temperatures in cold climates resulted in the longest drought propagation time, while dry summer climates in temperate climates reduced drought propagation time. There were weaker propagation relationships in arid climates. In tropical climates, precipitation may not be the main driving factor for drought propagation. (3) Different land cover types show significant differences in the propagation of groundwater droughts, with forests having a longer propagation time from meteorological drought to agricultural drought or surface water drought than grassland and cropland, and forests having the shortest propagation time when meteorological drought, agricultural drought, and surface water drought is propagated to groundwater drought. Woody plants have deeper root systems than herbaceous plants and can draw up deeper groundwater. Forests have greater water storage capacity and weaker groundwater recharge than grasslands and croplands, resulting in forests being more resistant to agricultural and surface water droughts and less resistant to groundwater droughts during meteorological droughts. This study can help to clarify the propagation laws among different drought types and understand the internal mechanisms that affect the development of drought during the water cycle.

RESUMEN

We realize a scanning probe microscope using single trapped ^{87}Rb atoms to measure optical fields with subwavelength spatial resolution. Our microscope operates by detecting fluorescence from a single atom driven by near-resonant light and determining the ac Stark shift of an atomic transition from other local optical fields via the change in the fluorescence rate. We benchmark the microscope by measuring two standing-wave Gaussian modes of a Fabry-Pérot resonator with optical wavelengths of 1560 and 781 nm. We attain a spatial resolution of 300 nm, which is superresolving compared to the limit set by the 780 nm wavelength of the detected light. Sensitivity to short length scale features is enhanced by adapting the sensor to characterize an optical field via the force it exerts on the atom.

RESUMEN

Subsystem readout during a quantum process, or mid-circuit measurement, is crucial for error correction in quantum computation, simulation, and metrology. Ideal mid-circuit measurement should be faster than the decoherence of the system, high-fidelity, and nondestructive to the unmeasured qubits. Here, we use a strongly coupled optical cavity to read out the state of a single tweezer-trapped ^{87}Rb atom within a small tweezer array. Measuring either atomic fluorescence or the transmission of light through the cavity, we detect both the presence and the state of an atom in the tweezer, within only tens of microseconds, with state preparation and measurement infidelities of roughly 0.5% and atom loss probabilities of around 1%. Using a two-tweezer system, we find measurement on one atom within the cavity causes no observable hyperfine-state decoherence on a second atom located tens of microns from the cavity volume. This high-fidelity mid-circuit readout method is a substantial step toward quantum error correction in neutral atom arrays.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Twenty-four-hour treatment options could provide a continuous drug delivery strategy in advanced Parkinson's disease and can ameliorate motor and non-motor complications. Use of levodopa infusion is often limited to 12-16 h/day due to its cost. Adjunctive overnight rotigotine transdermal patch is a continuous drug delivery option successfully used in clinical practice coupled with apomorphine infusion. However, real-life data addressing the tolerability of transdermal dopamine agonist therapy with concomitant use of intrajejunal levodopa infusion in advanced Parkinson's disease are not available. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the tolerability and beneficial effects of combined therapy with overnight rotigotine transdermal patch and intrajejunal levodopa infusion over a follow-up period of 12 months in advanced Parkinson's disease. METHOD: In this retrospective data analysis, data before and after the initiation of the continuous drug delivery combined therapy using overnight rotigotine transdermal patch and intrajejunal levodopa infusion were collected from the ongoing non-motor-international-longitudinal study (NILS) and local clinical practice at King's College Hospital (London, United Kingdom). 12 advanced Parkinson's disease patients on intrajejunal levodopa therapy who were additionally treated with overnight rotigotine transdermal patch (mean dose 5.67 ± 4.19 mg) are included. Tolerability over a 12-month period was assessed. In addition, changes in motor symptoms (SCales for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease, SCOPA-Motor), non-motor symptoms (Non-Motor Symptoms Scale, NMSS) and quality of life (Parkinson's disease Questionnaire-8, PDQ-8) before and 12-month after continuous drug delivery combined therapy initiation are evaluated. RESULTS: Tolerability was 100% irrespective of age, disease duration, stages of disease. (Treatment with overnight rotigotine transdermal patch that was maintained for a minimum of 6 months was considered "tolerated", primary tolerability). In addition, we noted a significant reduction of the NMSS total score (p = 0.009) and the NMSS domain 3 score (mood and apathy domain) (p = 0.028), although the latter did not remain statistically significant after correction for multiple testing (p2 = 0.252) at 12 months. CONCLUSION: Combination of intrajejunal levodopa infusion with overnight rotigotine transdermal patch is well tolerated and extend the beneficial effects of infusion with excellent tolerability; and also improved aspects of mood and apathy sustained at 12 months in advanced Parkinson's disease.

RESUMEN

Parkinsonism secondary to viral infections is not an uncommon occurrence and has been brought under the spotlight with the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. A variety of viruses have been described with a potential of inducing or contributing to the occurrence of parkinsonism and Parkinson's disease (PD), although the relationship between the two remains a matter of debate originating with the description of encephalitis lethargica in the aftermath of the Spanish flu in 1918. While some viral infections have been linked to an increased risk for the development of PD, others seem to have a causal link with the occurrence of parkinsonism. Here, we review the currently available evidence on viral-induced parkinsonism with a focus on potential pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical features. We also review the evidence on viral infections as a risk factor for developing PD and the link between SARS-CoV-2 and parkinsonism, which might have important implications for future research and treatments.

RESUMEN

BU-4664L is a naturally occurring N-farnesylated dibenzodiazepinone with important biological activities. Herein, we report the synthesis and antitumor evaluation of two series of BU-4664L derivatives bearing different substituent patterns on the dibenzodiazepinone core and with diverse side chains. All of the derivatives displayed micromolar activity against the human prostate cancer PC-3 cells, while lower or no activity against the human lung H460 cells. The most active derivatives were 10a and 16c which exerted antiproliferative activity against PC-3 cells with GI50 values of 5.66 and 5.94 µM, respectively, and thus represent promising lead compounds for further development.
