RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The efficacy of a propolis solution against denture biofilm was evaluated by means of an in vitro assessment and a cross-over randomized clinical trial. METHODS: Acrylic resin specimens were contaminated by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis, immersed in a (A) propolis solution, (B) saline or (C) alkaline peroxide, applied onto Petri plates with culture medium and after incubation the number of colonies was counted. For the clinical trial, 30 complete denture wearers were randomly assigned to groups (A) propolis solution, and (B) saline, following one of the sequences (I)A/B or (II) B/A. After each intervention, biofilm was quantified by means of digital photos taken from the intaglio surface and a microbiological quantification of Candida spp. and mutans streptococci was conducted. RESULTS: Both propolis solution and alkaline peroxide reduced the microbial counts for S. mutans and C. albicans with significant and greater effect for group C (P< 0.05). However, no difference was found clinically between the interventions. The propolis solution showed an intermediate antimicrobial effect against S. mutans and C. albicans. Also, it did not exert an immediate effect on denture biofilm. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A commercially available propolis-based cleanser solution was evaluated in vitro and clinically for the treatment of denture stomatitis. Although an immediate effect on denture biofilm was not observed after a single application, It showed antimicrobial effect against S. mutans and C. albicans.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the validity of the Brazilian versions of OHIP-EDENT and GOHAI as assessment tools of edentulous subjects' OHRQoL. BACKGROUND: Inventories for measuring oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) are important in clinical studies regarding oral rehabilitation. However, there is a need for comprehensive validation after translation into different cultural settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample comprised of 100 complete denture wearers (29 men, 71 women, mean age of 65.2 ± 9.9 years). The associations between each OHRQoL inventory and other variables served as measurements of construct validity. Data analysis comprised the Spearman correlation test as well as multiple regression using the OHRQoL inventories as dependent variables and the other scales as determinants. RESULTS: Both OHRQoL inventories showed good correlation with denture satisfaction, whereas lower correlation coefficients were found among the inventories and the HAD subscales. Denture satisfaction alone explained 48% and 39% of the variance found for the OHIP-EDENT and GOHAI, respectively, as assessed by multiple regression. A smaller effect was found for OHIP-EDENT. CONCLUSION: Both OHIP-EDENT and GOHAI showed good construct validity for measurement of OHRQoL of edentulous subjects.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effect of the incorporation of the antimicrobial monomer methacryloyloxyundecylpyridinium bromide (MUPB) on the hardness, roughness, flexural strength, and color stability of a denture base material. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six disk-shaped (14-mm diameter × 4-mm thick) and 30 rectangular (65 × 10 × 3.3 mm(3) ) heat-polymerized acrylic resin specimens were divided into three groups according to the concentration of MUPB (w/w): (A) 0%, (B) 0.3%, (C) 0.6%. Hardness was assessed by a hardness tester equipped with a Vickers diamond penetrator. Flexural strength and surface roughness were tested on a universal testing machine and a surface roughness tester, respectively. Color alterations (ΔE) were measured by a portable spectrophotometer after 12 and 36 days of immersion in water, coffee, or wine. Variables were analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey HSD test (α= 0.05). RESULTS: The following mean results (±SD) were obtained for hardness (A: 15.6 ± 0.6, B: 14.6 ± 1.7, C: 14.8 ± 0.8 VHN; ANOVA: p= 0.061), flexural strength (A: 111 ± 17, B: 105 ± 12, C: 88 ± 12 MPa; ANOVA: p= 0.008), and roughness (A: 0.20 ± 0.11, B: 0.20 ± 0.11, C: 0.24 ± 0.08 µm; ANOVA: p= 0.829). Color changes of immersed specimens were significantly influenced by solutions and time (A: 9.1 ± 3.1, B: 14.8 ± 7.5, C: 13.3 ± 6.1 ΔE; ANOVA: p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The incorporation of MUPB affects the mechanical properties of a denture base acrylic resin; however, the only significant change was observed for flexural strength and may not be critical. Color changes were slightly higher when resin containing MUPB was immersed in wine for a prolonged time; however, the difference has debatable clinical relevance.

Objetivo: Intervenções visando à melhor higiene de próteses totais podem ter maior chance de sucesso caso levem à melhora da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal (QVSB), assim melhorando a colaboração do paciente. No entanto, não se conhece se há associação entre a higiene precária das próteses e pobre QVSB. Assim, este estudo buscou avaliar a associação entre a área coberta por biofilme sobre próteses totais e a QVSB em uma amostra de pacientes completamente desdentados. Material e método: Uma amostra foi composta por 80 participantes (20 homens e 60 mulheres, média etária de 65,0 ± 9,1 anos) que solicitavam novas próteses totais em uma clínica universitária. A variável usada como medida para a higiene das próteses foi a área coberta por biofilme, quantificada por meio de um método computadorizado. Em seguida, participantes responderam ao instrumento OHIP-EDENT e a questões sobre parâmetros sócio-demográficos. Testes bivariados e regressão múltipla quantificaram a associação entre o biofilme e as demais variáveis (a = 0,05). Resultado: A correlação da área coberta por biofilme com a QVSB, bem como com a maioria das variáveis sócio-demográficas, foi fraca e não significante. A regressão múltipla confirmou essa falta de associação entre o biofilme das próteses e a QVSB. Conclusão: É possível concluir que a higiene de próteses totais é independente da QVSB para o usuário de próteses totais regular.


Objective: Interventions for better denture cleansing would be more successful if they can improve oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL), thus reinforcing patient?s compliance. Nevertheless, it is currently unknown whether precarious denture hygiene is associated with poor OHQoL. This study aimed to assess the association between denture biofilm coverage and OHQoL in a sample of adult edentulous patients wearing complete dentures. Material and method: The sample was composed by 80 participants (20 men and 60 women, mean age of 65.0 ± 9.1 years) who requested new complete dentures in a university clinic. The variable used as a measure of denture hygiene was biofilm coverage area, which was quantified by means of a computerized method. Afterwards, participants answered the OHIP-EDENT instrument and questions about socio-demographic parameters. Bivariate tests and multiple regression quantified the association between denture biofilm and other variables (a = 0.05). Result: Correlation between biofilm coverage area and OHQoL, as well as with most socio-demographic variables, was weak and non significant. Multiple regression confirmed the lack of association between denture biofilm and OHQoL. Conclusion: It can be concluded that denture hygiene is independent of OHQoL for the average complete denture wearers.
