RESUMEN

Innovative surface-protecting ligands are in constant demand due to their crucial role in shaping the configuration, property, and application of gold nanoclusters. Here, the unprecedented O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (DTX)-stabilized atomically precise gold nanoclusters, [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Cl2]2+ (Au25DTX-Cl) and [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Br2]2+ (Au25DTX-Br), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The introduction of bidentate DTX ligands not only endowed the gold nanocluster with unique staggered Au25 nanorod configurations but also generated the symmetry breaking from the D5d geometry of the Au25 kernels to the chiral D5 configuration of the Au25 molecules. The chirality of Au25 nanorods was notably revealed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and chiral separation was induced by employing chiral DTX ligands. The staggered configurations of Au25 nanorods, as opposed to eclipsed ones, were responsible for the large red shift in the emission wavelengths, giving rise to a promising near-infrared II (NIR-II, >1000 nm) phosphorescence. Furthermore, their performances in photocatalytic sulfide oxidation and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions have been examined, and it has been demonstrated that the outstanding catalytic activity of gold nanoclusters is highly related to their stability.

An anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped, motile and spore-forming bacterium, designated strain ZCY20-5T, was isolated from pit clay of Chinese strong-aroma type Baijiu (Chinese liquor). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences showed that strain ZCY20-5T belonged to the genus Caproicibacterium, family Oscillospiracheae, but it showed low similarity to the type species Caproicibacterium amylolyticum LBM18003T (98.00 %) and Caproicibacterium lactatifermentans LBM19010T (95.67 %). In anaerobic yeast extract medium, growth was observed at 20-45 °C (optimum, 35-40 °C), at pH 4.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 6.5-7.0) and with 0.0-2.0 % NaCl (w/v). The predominant fatty acids were C16 : 0, C14 : 0, C13 3-OH and C16 3-OH, and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, three phospholipids of unknown structure containing glucosamine and two unidentified phospholipids. Strain ZCY20-5T exhibited an 81.32 % pairwise average nucleotide identity value, a 78.98 % average amino acid identity value and a 22.30 % digital DNA-DNA hybridization value compared to its closest relative C. amylolyticum LBM18003T. Based on morphological, physiological, biochemical, chemotaxonomic, genotypic and phylogenetic results, strain ZCY20-5T represents a novel species of Caproicibacterium, and the type strain is ZCY20-5T (=MCCC 1A19399T=KCTC 25590T).

AIMS: Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKIs), including first-generation ibrutinib, second-generation acalabrutinib and zanubrutinib, may be involved in the mechanisms of action related to adverse events (AEs) of the cardiovascular system. We aimed to characterize the cardiovascular AEs of BTKIs reported in the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System, and to compare the cardiovascular risks of BTKIs. METHODS: Across all indications of three FDA-approved BTKIs, primary suspect drugs were extracted over two periods: from January 2013 to December 2022 (after the approval of the first BTKI), and from January 2020 to December 2022 (all three BTKIs on the market). Disproportionality was measured by reporting odds ratios (RORs) and information components. Additional analyses were performed without incorporating patients with underlying cardiovascular disease (CVD). RESULTS: A total of 10 353 cases included the uses of ibrutinib, acalabrutinib and zanubrutinib. Ibrutinib was significantly associated with 47 cardiovascular AEs. Acalabrutinib was associated with new signals, including cardiac failure (ROR = 1.82 [1.13-2.93]), pulmonary oedema (ROR = 2.15 [1.19-3.88]), ventricular extrasystoles (ROR = 5.18 [2.15-12.44]), heart rate irregular (ROR = 3.05 [1.53-6.11]), angina pectoris (ROR = 3.18 [1.71-5.91]) and cardiotoxicity (ROR = 25.22 [17.14-37.10]). In addition, cardiovascular events had an earlier onset in acalabrutinib users. Zanubrutinib was only associated with atrial fibrillation. Acalabrutinib and zanubrutinib had lower ROR values than ibrutinib. The AE signals were generally consistent between the population receiving and not receiving CVD medications. CONCLUSIONS: Potential cardiovascular risks identified in this study were not clearly noted on the label of marketed acalabrutinib. Caution should be paid to the cardiovascular risks of BTKIs having been or being developed.

Confined in a cylindrical pore with homeotropic anchoring condition, the hexagonal columnar phase of discotic liquid crystals can form a "log-pile" configuration, in which the columns are perpendicular to the long axis of the pore. However, the {100} planes of the hexagonal lattice can orient either parallel (termed (100)‖ orientation) or perpendicular ((100)⊥) to pore axis. Here we experimentally show that the (100)‖ orientation is found in narrower cylindrical pores, and the (100)‖-(100)⊥ transition can be controlled by engineering the structure of the molecules. The (100)‖ orientation is destroyed in asymmetric discotics hepta(heptenyloxy)triphenylene (SATO7); replacing the oxygen linkage in hexa(hexyloxy)triphenylene (HATO6) by sulphur (HATS6) improves the (100)‖ orientation in small pores; adding a perfluorooctyl end to each alkyl chain of HATO6 (HATO6F8) moves the (100)‖-(100)⊥ transition to larger pores. We have provided a semi-quantitative explanation of the experimental observations, and discussed them in the context of previous findings on related materials in a wider pore size range from 60 nm to 100 µm. This allows us to produce a comprehensive picture of confined columnar liquid crystals whose applications critically depend on our ability to align them.

Both epidemiological and experimental studies increasingly show that exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is related to the occurrence and development of chronic diseases, such as metabolic diseases. However, whether PM2.5 has "exposure memory" and how these memories affect chronic disease development like hepatic metabolic homeostasis are unknown. Therefore, we aimed to explore the effects of exposure transition on liver cholesterol and bile acids (BAs) metabolism in mice. In this study, C57BL/6 mice were exposed to concentrated ambient PM2.5 or filtered air (FA) in a whole-body exposure facility for an initial period of 10 weeks, followed by another 8 weeks of exposure switch (PM2.5 to FA and FA to PM2.5) comparing to non-switch groups (FA to FA and PM2.5 to PM2.5), which were finally divided into four groups (FF of FA to FA, PP of PM2.5 to PM2.5, PF of PM2.5 to FA, and FP of FA to PM2.5). Our results showed no significant difference in food intake, body composition, glucose homeostasis, and lipid metabolism between FA and PM2.5 groups after the initial exposure before the exposure switch. At the end of the exposure switch, the mice switched from FA to PM2.5 exposure exhibited a high sensitivity to late-onset PM2.5 exposure, as indicated by significantly elevated hepatic cholesterol levels and disturbed BAs metabolism. However, the mice switched from PM2.5 to FA exposure retained a certain memorial effects of previous PM2.5 exposure in hepatic cholesterol levels, cholesterol metabolism, and BAs metabolism. Furthermore, 18-week PM2.5 exposure significantly increased hepatic free BAs levels, which were completely reversed by the FA exposure switch. Finally, the changes in small heterodimeric partner (SHP) and nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A member 2 (LRH1) in response to exposure switch mechanistically explained the above alterations. Therefore, mice switching from PM2.5 exposure to FA showed only a weak memory of prior PM2.5 exposure. In contrast, the early FA caused mice to be more susceptible to subsequent PM2.5 exposure.

Controlled-release urea application and straw incorporation have been conducted in recent years as environmental-friendly and sustainable farming strategies, but the long-term effects of controlled-release urea application and combination with straw on the dryland maize yield, soil fertility and the environment under future climate scenarios remain unclear. Hence, based on a six-year field experiment, four treatments were used to calibrate and validate the DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC) model, including non-nitrogen (CK), split applications of conventional urea (UR), single basal application of conventional urea and controlled-release urea at a ratio of 2:1 (CU), and CU combined with straw (CUS). Subsequently, coupled the well-validated model with future climate to evaluate suitable agricultural production practices under two shared socioeconomic pathways (SSP)-SSP245 and SSP585. The validation results indicated a good fit between the simulated and observed data of greenhouse gas emissions, soil organic carbon (SOC) contents and maize yields. With the anticipation of warmer temperatures and increased precipitation in the future, the yields of UR, CU, and CUS treatment significantly rose. Under SSP585 scenario, the positive impacts of CU treatment on maize yields reduced after the 2050s, exhibiting an average decline of 12.03%. Compared with the UR treatment, the CU treatment markedly reduced cumulative N2O emissions, and both treatments maintained the original state of SOC storages in the 2030s, furthermore, the CUS treatment reduced N2O emissions by 47.10%, 35.07%, 23.80% and 10.04% in the 2030s, 2050s, 2070s and 2090s, respectively. SOC storages for the CUS treatment gradually increased with an average of 464.58, 350.22, 250.87 and 177.75 kg C ha-1 y-1 for two SSP scenarios in the 2030s, 2050s, 2070s and 2090s, which excellently offset the CO2 equivalent of emissions caused by N2O emissions. Therefore, in dryland maize production, combined controlled-release urea with straw incorporation could achieve the best comprehensive effect among increase of yield, improvement of SOC storages and alleviation of greenhouse gas emissions under future climate scenario.

Gyroid, double diamond and the body-centred "Plumber's nightmare" are the three most common bicontinuous cubic phases in lyotropic liquid crystals and block copolymers. While the first two are also present in solvent-free thermotropics, the latter had never been found. Containing six-fold junctions, it was unlikely to form in the more common phases with rod-like cores normal to the network columns, where a maximum of four branches can join at a junction. The solution has therefore been sought in side-branched mesogens that lie in axial bundles joined at their ends by flexible "hinges". But for the tightly packed double framework, geometric models predicted that the side-chains should be very short. The true Plumber's nightmare reported here, using fluorescent dithienofluorenone rod-like mesogen, has been achieved with, indeed, no side chains at all, but with 6 flexible end-chains. Such molecules normally form columnar phases, but the key to converting a complex helical column-forming mesogen into a framework-forming one was the addition of just one methyl group to each pendant chain. A geometry-based explanation is given.

Among the intriguing bicontinuous self-assembled structures, the gyroid cubic is the most ubiquitous. It is found in block and star polymers, surfactants with or without solvent, in thermotropic liquid crystals with end- or side-chains, and in biosystems providing structural color and modelling cell mitosis. It contains two interpenetrating networks of opposite chirality and is thus achiral if, as usual, the content of the two nets is the same. However, we now find that this is not the case for strongly chiral compounds. While achiral molecules follow the opposite twists of nets 1 and 2, molecules with a chiral center in their rod-like core fail to follow the 70° twist between junctions in net 2 and instead wind against it by -110° to still match the junction orientation. The metastable chiral gyroid is a high-entropy high-heat-capacity mesophase. The homochirality of its nets makes the CD signal of the thienofluorenone compounds close to that in the stable I23 phase with 3 isochiral nets.

This study aimed to investigate the link between COL1A1 production and colorectal carcinoma and assess the value of prognosis and immunotherapy. For this purpose, the transcriptional level of COL1A1 was analyzed. The clinicopathological information and gene expression profile were analyzed to reveal the link between COL1A1 and clinicopathological characteristics. For bioinformatics examination, GSEA and GSVA were utilized. Correlation analysis was implemented to study the causal relationship between COL1A1 and immune checkpoint molecules and inflammation immune cell infiltration. Results showed that in colorectal cancer, COL1A1 was highly expressed and linked with a few clinicopathological characteristics, inflammation and immunological response, tumor immune cell infiltration, and immune checkpoint markers. COL1A1 might likely indicate a bad prognosis and serve as a target of immunotherapy for colon cancer.

Pseudoalteromonas sp. CuT4-3, a copper resistant bacterium, was isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal sulfides on the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR), is an aerobic, mesophilic and rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the family Pseudoalteromonadaceae (class Gammaproteobacteria, order Alteromonadales). In this study, we present the complete genome sequence of strain CuT4-3, which consists of a single circular chromosome comprising 3,660,538 nucleotides with 41.05% G + C content and two circular plasmids comprising 792,064 nucleotides with 40.36% G + C content and 65,436 nucleotides with 41.50% G + C content. In total, 4078 protein coding genes, 105 tRNA genes, and 25 rRNA genes were obtained. Genomic analysis of strain CuT4-3 identified numerous genes related to heavy metal resistance (especially copper) and EPS production. The genome of strain CuT4-3 will be helpful for further understanding of its adaptive strategies, particularly its ability to resist heavy metal, in the deep-sea hydrothermal vent environment.

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater is receiving more attention due to its non-renewable property. As copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) usually occur in livestock wastewater, this study focused on metal sorption in struvite from swine wastewater and the release properties of granular struvite in solution with varying pH conditions (2, 4, 7). The results demonstrated pH values presented a slightly decreasing trend with increasing Cu/Zn ratio, and Zn exhibited higher sorption performance on struvite crystals than that of Cu. Under the high content of metals in the wastewater, Cu/Zn ratios in the wastewater contributed to varying metal binding forms and mechanisms, resulting in the difference in the leaching properties of nutrients and metal. For the granular struvite manufactured with the adhesion of alginate, the P release percentage achieved 30.3-40.5% after 96 h in the wastewater of pH 2, whereas they were only 5.63-8.92% and 1.05-1.50% in the wastewater of pH 4 and 7, respectively. Acid wastewater contributed to the release of two metals, and the release amount of Zn was higher than that of Cu, which is associated with their sorption capacity in crystals. During the latter soil leaching test of adding granular struvite, the NH4+-N and PO43--P concentration in the effluent ranged from 0.34 to 1.26 and 0.62 to 2.56 mg/L after 96 h, respectively. However, the Cu and Zn could not be measured due to lower than the detection limit under varying treatments. Struvite might be accompanied by quicker metal leaching and slower nutrient leaching when surface sorption dominates in wastewater with lower metal concentrations.

Medical device-associated infection remains a critical problem in the healthcare setting. Different clinical- or device-related methods have been attempted to reduce the infection rate. Among these approaches, creating a surface with bactericidal cationic functionality has been proposed. To do so, a sophisticated multi-step chemical procedure would be needed. Instead, a simple immersion approach was utilized in this investigation to render the titanium and polypropylene surface with the quaternary ammonium functionality by using a mussel-inspired novel lab-synthesized biomimetic catechol-terminated polymer, PQA-C8. The chemical oxidants, CuSO4/H2O2, as well as dopamine, were added into the novel PQA-C8 polymer immersion solution for one-step surface modification. Additionally, a two-step immersion scheme, in which the polypropylene substrate was first immersed in the dopamine solution and then in the PQA-C8 solution, was also attempted. Surface analysis results indicated the surface characteristics of the modified substrates were affected by the immersion solution formulation as well as the procedure utilized. The antibacterial assay has shown the titanium substrates modified by the one-step dopamine + PQA-C8 mixtures with the oxidants added and the polypropylene modified by the two-step scheme exhibited bacterial reduction percentages greater than 90% against both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli and these antibacterial substrates were non-cytotoxic.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders significantly impact the job performance and quality of life of nursing personnel in China, necessitating an understanding of their prevalence and risk factors to enhance occupational health and improve medical safety. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nurses in China. DESIGN: Systematic literature review and meta-analysis. METHODS: A computerized search was conducted on databases, including the China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, Wanfang Database, China Biomedical Literature Database, Weipu Database, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and CINAHL, covering studies from inception to February 28, 2024, addressing the risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nursing professionals in China. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 14 software. RESULTS: The analysis included 23 articles, involving a total of 21,042 cases, and revealed a prevalence rate of 79 % (95 % CI: 73 %-84 %) for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nursing staff in China. Subgroup analysis revealed that the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders was highest among those with length of service >15 years, at 87 %; the 31-40 age group had a higher prevalence than other age groups, at 85 %; female nurses exhibited a prevalence rate of 80 %, surpassing male nurses at 77 %, while surgical nurses had a higher prevalence rate (83 %) than those in other departments. The most affected body parts were the neck (58 %), waist (57 %), shoulders (49 %), and back (35 %). Identified risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nurses in China included age >35 years (OR = 1.69, 95 % CI: 1.16-2.45), length of service ≥10 years (OR = 3.30, 95 % CI: 1.84-5.92), marital status (married) (OR = 2.19, 95 % CI: 1.91-2.50), heavy workload (OR = 2.46, 95 % CI: 1.25-4.83), weekly work hours >40 h (OR = 1.50, 95 % CI: 1.34-1.67), daily work hours >8 h (OR = 1.71, 95 % CI: 1.32-2.21), strong sense of work fatigue (OR = 1.47, 95 % CI: 1.22-1.76), and high night shift frequency (OR = 1.81, 95 % CI: 1.62-2.02). Regular physical exercise was found to be a protective factor (OR = 0.68, 95 % CI: 0.56-0.82). CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among clinical nursing staff in China was 79 %. Age >35 years, length of service ≥10 years, marital status (married), heavy workload, weekly work hours >40 h, daily work hours >8 h, strong sense of work fatigue, and night shift frequency were identified as risk factors. Nursing administrators and staff can take proactive measures against the aforementioned factors to reduce the risk of illness and ensure the safety of medical care. Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) can induce massive death of ischemic penumbra neurons via oxygen burst, exacerbating brain damage. Parthanatos is a form of caspase-independent cell death involving excessive activation of PARP-1, closely associated with intense oxidative stress following CIRI. 4'-O-methylbavachalcone (MeBavaC), an isoprenylated chalcone component in Fructus Psoraleae, has potential neuroprotective effects. This study primarily investigates whether MeBavaC can act on SIRT3 to alleviate parthanatos of ischemic penumbra neurons induced by CIRI. MeBavaC was oral gavaged to the middle cerebral artery occlusion-reperfusion (MCAO/R) rats after occlusion. The effects of MeBavaC on cerebral injury were detected by the neurological deficit score and cerebral infarct volume. In vitro, PC-12 cells were subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R), and assessed cell viability and cell injury. Also, the levels of ROS, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and intracellular Ca2+ levels were detected to reflect mitochondrial function. We conducted western blotting analyses of proteins involved in parthanatos and related signaling pathways. Finally, the exact mechanism between the neuroprotection of MeBavaC and parthanatos was explored. Our results indicate that MeBavaC reduces the cerebral infarct volume and neurological deficit scores in MCAO/R rats, and inhibits the decreased viability of PC-12 cells induced by OGD/R. MeBavaC also downregulates the expression of parthanatos-related death proteins PARP-1, PAR, and AIF. However, this inhibitory effect is weakened after the use of a SIRT3 inhibitor. In conclusion, the protective effect of MeBavaC against CIRI may be achieved by inhibiting parthanatos of ischemic penumbra neurons through the SIRT3-PARP-1 axis.

In order to study the multi-mode damage and fracture mechanisms of thin-walled tubular parts with cross inner ribs (longitudinal and transverse inner ribs, LTIRs), the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model was modified with a newly proposed stress state function. Thus, tension damage and shear damage were unified by the new stress state function, which was asymmetric with respect to stress triaxiality. Tension damage dominated the modification, which coupled with the shear damage variable, ensured the optimal prediction of fractures of thin-walled tubular parts with LTIRs by the modified GTN model. This included fractures occurring at the non-rib zone (NRZ), the longitudinal rib (LIR) and the interface between the transverse rib (TIR) and the NRZ. Among them, the stripping of material from the outer surface of the tubular part was mainly caused by the shearing of built-up material in front of the rollers under a large wall thickness reduction (ΔT). Shear and tension deformation were the causes of fractures occurring at the NRZ, while axial tension under a large TIR interval (l) mainly resulted in fractures on LIRs. Fractures at the interface between the TIR and NRZ were due to the shearing applied by rib grooves and radial tension during the formation of ribs. This study can provide guidance for the manufacturing of high-performance aluminum alloy thin-walled tubular components with complex inner ribs.

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), also referred to as focused ultrasound surgery (FUS), has garnered recent attention as a non-invasive therapeutic strategy for prostate cancer. It utilizes focused acoustic energy to achieve localized thermal ablation, while also potentially exerting immunomodulatory effects. This review aims to elucidate the mechanisms underlying how HIFU influences tumor-specific immune responses in prostate cancer. These mechanisms include the release of tumor-associated antigens and damage-associated molecular patterns, the activation of innate immune cells, the facilitation of antigen presentation to adaptive immune cells, the enhancement of activation and proliferation of tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes, and the attenuation of the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment by reducing the activity of regulatory T cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells. Both preclinical investigations and emerging clinical data in prostate cancer models highlight HIFU's potential to modulate the immune system, as evidenced by increased infiltration of effector immune cells, elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and improved responsiveness to immune checkpoint inhibitors. HIFU induces immunogenic cell death, leading to the release of tumor antigens and danger signals that activate dendritic cells and facilitate cross-presentation to cytotoxic T cells. Additionally, FUS ablation reduces immunosuppressive cells and increases infiltration of CD8+ T cells into the tumor, reshaping the tumor microenvironment. By priming the immune system while overcoming immunosuppression, combining FUS with other immunotherapies like checkpoint inhibitors and cancer vaccines holds promise for synergistic anti-tumor effects. Despite challenges in optimizing parameters and identifying suitable patients, FUS represents a novel frontier by modulating the tumor microenvironment and enhancing anti-tumor immunity through a non-invasive approach.

Zinc (Zn)- and iron (Fe)-regulating transport-like proteins (ZIPs) are a class of proteins crucial for metal uptake and transport in plants, particularly for Zn and Fe absorption and distribution. These proteins ensure the balance of trace elements essential for plant growth, development, and metabolic activities. However, the role of the rice (Oryza sativa) OsZIP gene family in manganese (Mn) and selenium (Se) transport remains underexplored. This research conducted an all-sided analysis of the rice OsZIPs and identified 16 OsZIP sequences. Phylogenetic analysis categorized the OsZIPs predominantly within the three subfamilies. The expression levels of OsZIPs in rice root and leaf subjected to Mn and Se toxicity stress were examined through quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The findings revealed significant differential expression of many OsZIPs under these conditions, indicating a potential regulating effect in the response of rice to Mn and Se toxicity. This work lays a foundation for further functional studies of OsZIPs, enhancing our understanding of the response mechanisms of rice to Mn and Se toxicity and their roles in growth, development, and environmental adaptation.

There has been enduring debate on how attention alters contrast appearance. Recent research indicates that exogenous attention enhances contrast appearance for low-contrast stimuli but attenuates it for high-contrast stimuli. Similarly, one study has demonstrated that endogenous attention heightens perceived contrast for low-contrast stimuli, yet none have explored its impact on high-contrast stimuli. In this study, we investigated how endogenous attention alters contrast appearance, with a specific focus on high-contrast stimuli. In Experiment 1, we utilized the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) paradigm to direct endogenous attention, revealing that contrast appearance was enhanced for both low- and high-contrast stimuli. To eliminate potential influences from the confined attention field in the RSVP paradigm, Experiment 2 adopted the letter identification paradigm, deploying attention across a broader visual field. Results consistently indicated that endogenous attention increased perceived contrast for high-contrast stimuli. Experiment 3 employed equiluminant chromatic letters as stimuli in the letter identification task to eliminate potential interference from contrast adaption, which might have occurred in Experiment 2. Remarkably, the boosting effect of endogenous attention persisted. Combining the results from these experiments, we propose that endogenous attention consistently enhances contrast appearance, irrespective of stimulus contrast levels. This stands in contrast to the effects of exogenous attention, suggesting that mechanisms through which endogenous attention alters contrast appearance may differ from those of exogenous attention.

Selenium (Se) is crucial for both plants and humans, with plants acting as the main source for human Se intake. In plants, moderate Se enhances growth and increases stress resistance, whereas excessive Se leads to toxicity. The physiological mechanisms by which Se influences rice seedlings' growth are poorly understood and require additional research. In order to study the effects of selenium stress on rice seedlings, plant phenotype analysis, root scanning, metal ion content determination, physiological response index determination, hormone level determination, quantitative PCR (qPCR), and other methods were used. Our findings indicated that sodium selenite had dual effects on rice seedling growth under hydroponic conditions. At low concentrations, Se treatment promotes rice seedling growth by enhancing biomass, root length, and antioxidant capacity. Conversely, high concentrations of sodium selenite impair and damage rice, as evidenced by leaf yellowing, reduced chlorophyll content, decreased biomass, and stunted growth. Elevated Se levels also significantly affect antioxidase activities and the levels of proline, malondialdehyde, metal ions, and various phytohormones and selenium metabolism, ion transport, and antioxidant genes in rice. The adverse effects of high Se concentrations may directly disrupt protein synthesis or indirectly induce oxidative stress by altering the absorption and synthesis of other compounds. This study aims to elucidate the physiological responses of rice to Se toxicity stress and lay the groundwork for the development of Se-enriched rice varieties.

Previous studies have supported a tumor-suppressive role of semaphorin 3A (SEMA3A) in several tumors including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, in-depth characterization of the role of SEMA3A in OSCC and the underlying molecular mechanisms is lacking. Gene and protein expressions were detected using quantitative real-time PCR, western blot assay, and immunohistochemistry. OSCC cell metastasis was evaluated using Transwell and angiogenesis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was determined using tube formation assay. The interactions among molecules were predicted using bioinformatics analysis and validated using luciferase activity experiment and RNA immunoprecipitation assay. Pulmonary metastasis was evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining after constructing a lung metastasis tumor model in mice. SEMA3A expression was decreased in OSCC cells and its overexpression led to suppression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, and invasion of OSCC cells and angiogenesis of HUVECs. miR-32-5p was identified as an upstream molecule of SEMA3A and long non-coding RNA NR2F2 antisense RNA 1 (NR2F2-AS1) was validated as an upstream gene of miR-32-5p. Further experiments revealed that the inhibitory effects of NR2F2-AS1 overexpression on EMT, migration, invasion of OSCC cells, and angiogenesis of HUVECs as well as tumor growth and metastasis in mice were mediated via the miR-32-5p/SEMA3A axis. To conclude, NR2F2-AS1 may attenuate OSCC cell metastasis and angiogenesis of HUVECs and suppress tumor growth and metastasis in mice via the miR-32-5p/SEMA3A axis.
