RESUMEN

The ultimate regularity of quantum mechanics creates a tension with the assumption of classical chaos used in many of our pictures of chemical reaction dynamics. Out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) provide a quantum analog to the Lyapunov exponents that characterize classical chaotic motion. Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford have suggested a fundamental quantum bound for the rate of information scrambling, which resembles a limit suggested by Herzfeld for chemical reaction rates. Here, we use OTOCs to study model reactions based on a double-well reaction coordinate coupled to anharmonic oscillators or to a continuum oscillator bath. Upon cooling, as one enters the tunneling regime where the reaction rate does not strongly depend on temperature, the quantum Lyapunov exponent can approach the scrambling bound and the effective reaction rate obtained from a population correlation function can approach the Herzfeld limit on reaction rates: Tunneling increases scrambling by expanding the state space available to the system. The coupling of a dissipative continuum bath to the reaction coordinate reduces the scrambling rate obtained from the early-time OTOC, thus making the scrambling bound harder to reach, in the same way that friction is known to lower the temperature at which thermally activated barrier crossing goes over to the low-temperature activationless tunneling regime. Thus, chemical reactions entering the tunneling regime can be information scramblers as powerful as the black holes to which the quantum Lyapunov exponent bound has usually been applied.

Energy flow in molecules, like the dynamics of other many-dimensional finite systems, involves quantum transport across a dense network of near-resonant states. For molecules in their electronic ground state, the network is ordinarily provided by anharmonic vibrational Fermi resonances. Surface crossing between different electronic states provides another route to chaotic motion and energy redistribution. We show that nonadiabatic coupling between electronic energy surfaces facilitates vibrational energy flow and, conversely, anharmonic vibrational couplings facilitate nonadiabatic electronic state mixing. A generalization of the Logan-Wolynes theory of quantum energy flow in many-dimensional Fermi resonance systems to the two-surface case gives a phase diagram describing the boundary between localized quantum dynamics and global energy flow. We explore these predictions and test them using a model inspired by the problem of electronic excitation energy transfer in the photosynthetic reaction center. Using an explicit numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for this ten-dimensional model, we find quite good agreement with the expectations from the approximate analytical theory.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a leading cause of chronic low back pain. Cell-based strategies that seek to treat disc degeneration by regenerating the central nucleus pulposus (NP) hold significant promise, but key challenges remain. One of these is the inability of therapeutic cells to effectively mimic the performance of native NP cells, which are unique amongst skeletal cell types in that they arise from the embryonic notochord. In this study, we use single cell RNA sequencing to demonstrate emergent heterogeneity amongst notochord-derived NP cells in the postnatal mouse disc. Specifically, we established the existence of progenitor and mature NP cells, corresponding to notochordal and chondrocyte-like cells, respectively. Mature NP cells exhibited significantly higher expression levels of extracellular matrix (ECM) genes including aggrecan, and collagens II and VI, along with elevated transforming growth factor-beta and phosphoinositide 3 kinase-protein kinase B signaling. Additionally, we identified Cd9 as a novel surface marker of mature NP cells, and demonstrated that these cells were localized to the NP periphery, increased in numbers with increasing postnatal age, and co-localized with emerging glycosaminoglycan-rich matrix. Finally, we used a goat model to show that Cd9+ NP cell numbers decrease with moderate severity disc degeneration, suggesting that these cells are associated with maintenance of the healthy NP ECM. Improved understanding of the developmental mechanisms underlying regulation of ECM deposition in the postnatal NP may inform improved regenerative strategies for disc degeneration and associated low back pain.

RESUMEN

We present a novel micro-fabrication technique for creating concave surfaces on the endfacets of photonic crystal fibers. A fiber fusion splicer is used to generate arc discharges to melt and reshape the fiber endfacet. This technique can produce large spherical concave surfaces with roughness as low as 0.12 nm in various types of photonic crystal fibers. The deviation of fabricated surface and a spherical profile in the region of 70 µm in diameter is less than 50 nm. The center of the concave surface and the fiber mode field are highly coincident with a deviation less than 500 nm. Finesse measurements have shown that a Fabry-Pérot cavity composed of the fiber fabricated using this method and a plane mirror maintains finesse of 20000. This method is easy to replicate, making it a practical and efficient approach to fabricate concave surface on fibers for open-access fiber Fabry-Pérot cavities.

Poplar coma, the fluff-like appendages of seeds originating from the differentiated surface cells of the placenta and funicle, aids in the long-distance dispersal of seeds in the spring. However, it also poses hazards to human safety and causes pollution in the surrounding environment. Unraveling the regulatory mechanisms governing the initiation and development of coma is essential for addressing this issue comprehensively. In this study, strand-specific RNA-seq was conducted at three distinct stages of coma development, revealing 1888 lncRNAs and 52,810 mRNAs. The expression profiles of lncRNAs and mRNAs during coma development were analyzed. Subsequently, potential target genes of lncRNAs were predicted through co-localization and co-expression analyses. Integrating various types of sequencing data, lncRNA-miRNA-TF regulatory networks related to the initiation of coma were constructed. Utilizing identified differentially expressed genes encoding kinesin and actin, lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory networks associated with the construction and arrangement of the coma cytoskeleton were established. Additionally, relying on differentially expressed genes encoding cellulose synthase, sucrose synthase, and expansin, lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory networks related to coma cell wall synthesis and remodeling were developed. This study not only enhances the comprehension of lncRNA but also provides novel insights into the molecular mechanisms governing the initiation and development of poplar coma.

Tissue engineering is thought to be the ideal therapy for bone defect reconstructive treatment. In this study, we present a method of utilizing micro/nano porous polycarbonate membranes (PCMs) as the extracellular matrix to cultivate the human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) and investigate the osteogenic differentiation of those cells. We also compared the osteogenic enhancing abilities of different pore size PCMs. The pore diameters of the candidate membranes are 200 nm, 800 nm, 1200 nm, and 10 µm respectively, and their physical properties are identified. After seeding and cultivating on the PCMs, hPDLCs can be stimulated to undergo osteogenic differentiation, in which the 200 nm PCM is proved to have the most optimal osteo-induction ability. The results of in vivo experiments provide strong evidence suggesting that the hPDLCs stimulated by 200 nm PCM greatly accelerates the healing of bone reconstruction in mice skull defects, as well as promote the process of ectopic osteogenesis. RNA-sequencing was conducted to determine the differential mRNA expression profile during the osteogenesis process of hPDLCs on PCMs. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis were conducted to study the regulatory mechanisms, in which osteogenic marker expression such as Hippo, TGF-ß, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways were significantly up-regulated. The up-regulation indicates the promising potential of nano porous PCMs for promoting osteogenesis for bone regeneration applications. Ultimately, signaling pathways that promote osteogenesis warrants further exploration.

Mucopolysaccharidosis I is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by deficient alpha-L-iduronidase activity, leading to abnormal accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in cells and tissues. Synovial joint disease is prevalent and significantly reduces patient quality of life. There is a critical need for improved understanding of joint disease pathophysiology in MPS I, including specific biomarkers to predict and monitor joint disease progression, and response to treatment. The objective of this study was to leverage the naturally-occurring MPS I canine model and undertake an unbiased proteomic screen to identify systemic biomarkers predictive of local joint disease in MPS I. Synovial fluid and serum samples were collected from MPS I and healthy dogs at 12 months-of-age, and protein abundance characterized using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Stifle joints were evaluated postmortem using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histology. Proteomics identified 40 proteins for which abundance was significantly correlated between serum and synovial fluid, including markers of inflammatory joint disease and lysosomal dysfunction. Elevated expression of three biomarker candidates, matrix metalloproteinase 19, inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy-chain 3 and alpha-1-microglobulin, was confirmed in MPS I cartilage, and serum abundance of these molecules was found to correlate with MRI and histological degenerative grades. The candidate biomarkers identified have the potential to improve patient care by facilitating minimally-invasive, specific assessment of joint disease progression and response to therapeutic intervention.

Previous studies have reported inconsistent associations between low-carbohydrate diets (LCD) and plasma lipid profile. Also, there is little evidence on the role of the quality and food sources of macronutrients in LCD in cardiometabolic health. We investigated the cross-sectional associations between LCD and plasma cardiometabolic risk markers in a nationwide representative sample of the US population. Diet was measured through two 24-h recalls. Overall, healthy (emphasising unsaturated fat, plant protein and less low-quality carbohydrates) and unhealthy (emphasising saturated fat, animal protein and less high-quality carbohydrate) LCD scores were developed according to the percentage of energy as total and subtypes of carbohydrate, protein and fat. Linear regression was used to estimate the percentage difference of plasma marker concentrations by LCD scores. A total of 34 785 participants aged 18-85 years were included. After adjusting for covariates including BMI, healthy LCD was associated with lower levels of insulin, homoeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and TAG, and higher levels of HDL-cholesterol, with the percentage differences (comparing extreme quartile of LCD score) of -5·91, -6·16, -9·13, -9·71 and 7·60 (all Ptrend < 0·001), respectively. Conversely, unhealthy LCD was associated with higher levels of insulin, HOMA-IR, CRP and LDL-cholesterol (all Ptrend < 0·001). Our results suggest that healthy LCD may have positive, whereas unhealthy LCD may have negative impacts on CRP and metabolic and lipid profiles. These findings underscore the need to carefully consider the quality and subtypes of macronutrients in future LCD studies.

PURPOSE: Plant-based diets, particularly when rich in healthy plant foods, have been associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, the impact of plant-based diets that distinguish between healthy and unhealthy plant foods on cardiometabolic biomarkers remains unclear. METHODS: Dietary information was collected by two 24-h recalls among 34,785 adults from a nationwide cross-sectional study. Plasma levels of insulin, C-peptide, glucose, C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC) count, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured. Linear regression was used to evaluate the percentage difference in plasma marker concentrations by three plant-based diet indices, namely the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), the healthful PDI (hPDI), and the unhealthful PDI (uPDI). RESULTS: Greater hPDI-adherence scores (comparing extreme quartiles) were associated with lower levels of insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), TG/HDL-C ratio, CRP, WBC count, and TG, and higher levels of HDL-C, with the percentage differences of - 14.55, - 15.72, - 11.57, - 14.95, - 5.26, - 7.10, and 5.01, respectively (all Ptrend ≤ 0.001). Conversely, uPDI was associated with higher levels of insulin, C-peptide, HOMA-IR, TG/HDL-C ratio, CRP, WBC count, and TG, but lower HDL-C, with the percentage differences of 13.71, 14.00, 14.10, 10.43, 3.32, 8.00, and - 4.98 (all Ptrend ≤ 0.001), respectively. Overall PDI was only associated with lower levels of CRP and WBC count (all Ptrend ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that hPDI may have positive, whereas uPDI may have negative impacts on multiple cardiometabolic risk markers, and underscore the need to consider the quality of plant foods in future PDI studies.

The diverse biological activities of alginate oligosaccharides attracted extensive exploration of alginate lyases with various substrate specificity and enzymatic properties. In this study, an alginate lyase from Microbulbifer sp. ALW1, namely AlgL7, was phylogenetically classified into the polysaccharide lyase family 7 (PL7). The conserved amino acid residues Tyr606 and His499 in AlgL7 were predicted to act as the general acid/base catalysts. The enzyme was enzymatically characterized after heterologous expression and purification in E. coli. AlgL7 displayed optimal activity at 40 °C and pH 7.0. It had good stability at temperature below 35 °C and within a pH range of 5.0-10.0. AlgL7 exhibited good stability against the reducing reagent ß-ME and the surfactants of Tween-20 and Triton X-100. The degradation profiles of alginate indicated AlgL7 was a bifunctional endolytic alginate lyase generating alginate oligosaccharides with the degrees of polymerization 2-4. The degradation products of sodium alginate exhibited stronger antioxidant activities than the untreated polysaccharide. In addition, AlgL7 could directly digest Laminaria japonica to produce alginate oligosaccharides. These characteristics of AlgL7 offer a great potential of its application in high-value utilization of brown algae resources.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, emerging studies have demonstrated critical functions and potential clinical applications of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) in osteosarcoma. To further validate the prognostic value of multiple lncRNAs, we have conducted this updated meta-analysis. METHODS: Literature retrieval was conducted by searching PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library (last update by October 2, 2019). A meta-analysis was performed to explore association between lncRNAs expression and overall survival (OS) of osteosarcoma patients. Relationships between lncRNAs expression and other clinicopathological features were also analyzed respectively. RESULTS: Overall, 4351 patients from 62 studies were included in this meta-analysis and 25 lncRNAs were identified. Pooled analyses showed that high expression of 14 lncRNAs connoted worse OS, while two lncRNAs were associated with positive outcome. Further, analysis toward osteosarcoma clinicopathologic features demonstrated that overexpression of TUG1 and XIST indicated poor clinical parameters of patients. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis has elucidated the prognostic potential of 16 lncRNAs in human osteosarcoma. Evidently, desperate expression and functional targets of these lncRNAs offer new approaches for prognosis and therapy of osteosarcoma.

Recently, by constructing a haloalkyl chain, a new class of solid-state spiropyrans showing advanced photochromic activity has been developed, but the tailoring effect of the haloalkyl chain on photochromism is unclear. Here, the photochromism of solid-state spiropyrans with different chain lengths and end substituents is investigated, which gives a clear correlation between the chain length/end substituent and the thermodynamic stability of zwitterionic merocyanine. This work provides a useful designing strategy for tailoring the photochromism of solid-state spiropyrans.

Intramolecular energy flow (also known as intramolecular vibrational redistribution or IVR) is often assumed in Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus, transition state, collisional energy transfer, and other rate calculations not to be an impediment to reaction. In contrast, experimental spectroscopy, computational results, and models based on Anderson localization have shown that ergodicity is achieved rather slowly during molecular energy flow. The statistical assumption in rate theories might easily fail due to quantum localization. Here, we develop a simple model for the interplay of IVR and energy transfer and simulate the model with near-exact quantum dynamics for a 10-degree of freedom system composed of two five-mode molecular fragments. The calculations are facilitated by applying the van Vleck transformation to local random matrix models of the vibrational Hamiltonian. We find that there is a rather sharp "phase transition" as a function of molecular anharmonicity "a" between a region of facile energy transfer and a region limited by IVR and incomplete accessibility of the state space (classically, the phase space). The very narrow transition range of the order parameter a happens to lie right in the middle of the range expected for molecular torsion, bending, and stretching vibrations, thus demonstrating that reactive energy transfer dynamics several kBT above the thermal energy occurs not far from the localization boundary, with implications for controllability of reactions.

Phytochelatins are plants' small metal-binding peptides which chelate internal heavy metals to form nontoxic complexes. Detecting the complexes in plants would simplify identification of cultivars with both high tolerance and enrichment capabilities for heavy metals which represent phytoextraction performance. Thus, a terahertz spectroscopy combined with density functional theory, chemometrics and circular dichroism was used for characterization of phytochelatin2 (PC2), Cd-PC2 mixture standards, and pak choi (Brassica chinensis) leaves as a plant model. Results showed PC2 chelates Cd2+ in a 2:1 ratio to form Cd(PC2)2 complex; Cd connected to thoils of PC2 and changed ß-turn and random coil of PC2 peptide chain to ß-Sheet which presented as terahertz vibrations of PC2 around 1.03 and 1.71 THz being suppressed; the best models for detecting the complex in pak choi were obtained by partial least squares regression modeling combined with successive projections algorithm selection; the models used PC2 as a natural probe for visualizing and quantifying chelated Cd in pak choi leaf and achieved a limit of detection up to 1.151 ppm. This study suggested that terahertz information of the heavy metal-PCs complexes is qualified for representing a simpler alternative to classical index for evaluating phytoextraction performance of plant; it provided a general protocol for structure analysis and detection of heavy metal-PCs complexes in plant by terahertz absorbance.

The study aimed to assess trials investigating the effect of PBMT on mini-implant stability. Electronic searches of seven databases and manual search were conducted up to May 2020. Randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials evaluating the effect of PBMT on mini-implant stability were included. The risks of bias of individual studies were performed using ROB 2.0 and ROBINS-I-tool based on different study design. Meta-analysis was conducted to compare mini-implant stability exposed to PBMT with control ones at different time points after implantation. Among the 518 records initially identified, seven studies were included in this study. Six studies investigated low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and one study evaluated light-emitting diode (LED) therapy. Two studies were eligible for meta-analysis, which showed that LLLT significantly improved mini-implant stability 60 days after initial implantation (MD - 3.01, 95% CI range [- 4.68, - 1.35], p = 0.0004). High energy density of LLLT began to show beneficial effect on mini-implant stability as early as 3 days after implantation, while the significant effect of low energy density displayed later than 30 days after insertion. LED therapy could improve mini-implant stability after 2 months post-insertion. In conclusion, PBMT appears to be beneficial in ameliorating mini-implant stability. High energy density of LLLT might exert more rapid effect than low energy density. More high-quality clinical trials are needed to further demonstrate PBMT' effects on orthodontic mini-implants.

PURPOSE: To evaluate reserve quadriceps function and improve knee activity in patients with severe knee extension contracture following arthroscopic-assisted mini-incision quadricepsplasty as well as post-operative complications. METHODS: From 2012 to 2019, 32 patients with severe knee extension contractures (less than 45° range of flexion) were treated with an all-arthroscopic release technique. The clinical results, including range of motion (ROM), quadriceps function (quadriceps index, QI), and knee function, were evaluated, and MRI of the healed tendon after partial quadricepsplasty was performed. The patellar track and length during knee flexion were measured on three normal knees under fluoroscopy. Three formalin-fixed lower limbs were used to mimic severely contracted quadriceps to evaluate the extension of the patellar track. RESULTS: The median follow-up time was 2.1 years (1-5 years). The average QI was 92.0 ± 6.2, and the quadriceps muscle strength was increased from 3.28 to 4.72. At the final follow-up, 90% of the patients had no difficulty going upstairs, going downstairs, or rising from a chair. The ROM improved by 25.69 ± 3.6 preoperatively to 105.88 ± 6.6 at the final follow-up (P < 0.001). The open surgery showed that a 2-cm extension could be achieved by partly cutting the quadriceps tendon, and two cuts achieved a total extension of 5.2 ± 0.52 cm. The patellar tracking distance was 7.7 ± 0.43 cm, and the gap between the patella and femur was also reduced. CONCLUSION: Partial quadricepsplasty of the rectus femoris extended the contracted quadriceps and maintained quadriceps strength, allowing for full knee flexion and satisfactory clinical outcomes of knee function with few complications.

BACKGROUND: Proanthocyanidins (PAS) were complexed with potato starch (PS) to prepare polyphenol-starch complexes. The pasting, rheological and retrogradation properties of the complexes were investigated. RESULTS: The addition of PAS markedly affected the pasting, rheological and retrogradation properties of PS, especially at a concentration of 5% (w/w). Rapid viscosity analysis indicated that PAS significantly changed the viscosity, breakdown and setback value of PS. The rheological results showed that PAS decreased the flow behavior index and consistency coefficient, but increased the viscoelasticity of PS. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction indicated that PAS delayed the retrogradation of PS. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy indicated that the morphologies of retrograded PS gels were greatly altered to a less compact structure with the presence of PAS. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy elucidated that PAS interacted with PS via a noncovalent interaction, and inhibited the retrogradation of PS. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggested that supplementing PS with PAS might be an effective and convenient method for modifying the physicochemical properties of PS. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of 3-dimensional (3D) digital facial photographs taken by the Bellus3D Face Camera Pro (Bellus3D) (Bellus3D Inc, Los Gatos, Calif) and the 3dMDface system (3dMD) (3dMD Inc, Atlanta, Ga) with one another and with direct anthropometry (DA). METHODS: A mannequin head was selected as the research object. Twenty facial landmarks were labeled on the basis of the 8 interlandmark distances and 5 angles that were defined. A 150-mm digital Vernier caliper (Mitutoyo Inc, Tokyo, Japan) with an accuracy of 0.02 mm was applied to directly measure the interlandmark distances, and the angles were calculated according to the law of cosines. All the measurements were conducted 3 times by each operator under identical conditions. Then, each scanner was used to acquire 3D photographs 5 times, generating 10 digital stereophotographs. Linear distances and angles were measured on the 3D facial photographs reconstructed with open-source MeshLab software (ISTI [Italian National Research Council], Rome, Italy). Each linear distance and angle were measured 3 times by 1 operator, and 3 examiners conducted the measurements independently. To obtain the trueness, equivalence tests were applied to compare the measurements of the 2 scanners and DA. In addition, the average absolute deviations were calculated to directly compare the trueness of 3 methods (Bellus3D vs 3dMD vs DA). Finally, the intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess the interobserver agreement and the precision of 2 scanners. RESULTS: As for the trueness, 7 out of 8 of the linear distance measurements (N-Pn, Sn-Pog, ORE-IRE, OLE-ILE, RLC-RMC, LLC-LMC, and CR-CL) and 3 out of 5 of the angular measurements (MLA, NFA, and INI) obtained by 3dMD were equivalent to those obtained by DA. Five out of 8 measurements (N-Pn, Sn-Pog, RLC-RMC, LLC-LMC, and CR-CL) and 1 out of 5 of the angular measurements (MLA) obtained by Bellus3D were equivalent to the measurements obtained with DA. All but 3 of the measurements (ORE-IRE, NFA, and INI) obtained with Bellus3D were equivalent to 3dMD. The mean absolute difference between 3dMD and DA was 0.36 ± 0.20 mm and 0.45° ± 0.56°; the deviation between Bellus3D and DA was 0.61 ± 0.47 mm and 0.99° ± 0.61°; and the deviation between Bellus3D and 3dMD was 0.38 ± 0.37 mm and 0.62° ± 0.39°. Regarding the precision of the 2 scanners, the intraclass correlation coefficient value of 3dMD was approximately 1.00, and that of Bellus3D was 0.99. The interobserver agreement for each linear and angular measurement was 0.99. CONCLUSIONS: The trueness of each scanner was clinically acceptable for diagnosis and treatment planning. The precision of 3D photographs obtained by 3dMD and Bellus3D showed good scanning repeatability. The interobserver agreement between the 3 operators was rated as excellent (0.99).

Osteosarcoma represents the most prevailing primary bone tumor and the third most common cancer in children and adolescents worldwide. Among noncoding RNAs, circular RNAs (circRNAs) refer to a unique class in the shape of a covalently closed continuous loop with neither 5' caps nor 3'-polyadenylated tails, which are generated through back-splicing. Recently, with the development of whole-genome and transcriptome sequencing technologies, a growing number of circRNAs have been found aberrantly expressed in multiple diseases, including osteosarcoma. circRNA are capable of various biological functions including miRNA sponge, mediating alternatives, regulating genes at posttranscriptional levels, and interacting with proteins, indicating a pivotal role of circRNA in cancer initiation, progression, chemoresistance, and immune response. Moreover, circRNAs have been thrust into the spotlight as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in osteosarcoma. Herein, we briefly summarize the origin and biogenesis of circRNA with current knowledge of circRNA in tumorigenesis of osteosarcoma, aiming to elucidate the specific role and clinical implication of circRNAs in osteosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: The nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase antisense RNA 1 (NNT-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA aberrantly expressed in human malignancies. We aimed to analyze available data to evaluate the correlation between NNT-AS1 expression and cancer prognosis. METHODS: Literature retrieval was performed by systematic searching related databases from inception to April 2, 2020. Studies regarding correlation between NNT-AS1 expression, survival outcomes and clinical characteristics of cancer patients were collected and pooled to calculate the the hazard ratios (HRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). RESULTS: Ten studies comprising 699 patients were included, all of which were conducted in China according to literature selection criteria. Overexpression of NNT-AS1 had a significant association with unfavorable overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.84-2.36, P < 0.001). Stratified analysis showed that tumor type, sample size, follow-up months, and survival analysis approach did not change the predictive value of NNT-AS1 on OS. Furthermore, elevated NNT-AS1 level had significant association with distant metastasis (DM) (OR = 2.45, 95% CI: 1.39-4.30), lymph node metastasis (LNM) (OR = 3.92, 95% CI: 1.35-11.41), TNM stage (OR = 4.25, 95% CI: 1.71-10.56), and vascular invasion (OR = 3.98, 95% CI: 2.06-7.71), but was not associated with age and gender. The TCGA dataset further consistently showed that the NNT-AS1 expression was associated with poor OS and disease-free survival. CONCLUSIONS: High expression of NNT-AS1 is associated with unfavorable survival outcomes and poor clinicopathologic characteristics. However, large-cohort data and geographical studies are still needed to further validate the prognostic value of NNT-AS1 in cancers.
