Egg weight loss during incubation is a key indicator used to monitor successful egg development and is closely related to hatchability and chick survival. Artificial incubation is one of the most important captive breeding techniques used in conservation efforts to bolster avian populations. To repair damage to the eggshell and ensure embryonic viability during incubation, a variety of repair coverings can be applied. This study tested the impact of four repair materials (nail polish, synthetic glue, medical dressing, and molten wax film) on egg weight loss during incubation. We found no impact on weight loss for coverings smaller than 35% of the eggshell surface, nor did we find any differences between covering types. The average egg weight loss decreased as the coverage area increased, and the weight loss did not differ when blunt versus sharp-end coverings were compared. Given the relative insensitivity of egg weight loss and survival to the type of patch material used, we concluded that the selection of material for the purpose of weight loss management could be based on practical considerations, such as ease of application and availability.

RESUMEN

In egg production facilities, the classification of eggs is carried out either manually or by using sophisticated systems such as load cells. However, there is a need for the classification of eggs to be carried out with faster and cheaper methods. In the agri-food industry, the use of image processing technology is continuously increasing due to the data processing speed and cost-effective solutions. In this study, an image processing approach was used to classify chicken eggs on an industrial roller conveyor line in real-time. A color camera was used to acquire images in an illumination cabinet on a motorized roller conveyor while eggs are moving on the movement halls. The system successfully operated for the grading of eggs in the industrial multi-flow production line in real-time. There were significant correlations among measured weights of the eggs after image processing. The coefficient of linear correlation (R2) between measured and actual weights was 0.95.

This study is focused on describing the most important factors which have a great influence on profitability of egg production of two commercial layer flocks under Egyptian conditions, LSL white and brown. The data for each flock has been collected from seven governorates including the Delta and Upper Egypt zones over the period 2005-2012. General linear procedure was generated to get both least square means and separation of means. Application of stepwise regression was carried to predict the most important factors that affect egg production profitability in US dollar. White egg layers had significantly higher net profit per hen than the brown egg type, being as 12.2 vs. 12.1 cents for the white and brown type egg layers, respectively. Closed houses and battery systems were the preferred systems for the white-egg genotype where pullets achieved significantly higher egg income over feed coast by 15.9 and 14.9 cents for closed and battery system, respectively compared to 10.9 and 11.5 cents for the LSL brown one, respectively. Open houses and floor systems were profitable for brown-egg genotype by recording a significantly higher profitability as 13.3 and 12.7 cents, respectively copmared to 8.7 and 9.7 cents for the white-egg genotype.Both white and brown-egg types had recorded significantly higher net profitability under delta zone rather than upper Egypt by 2.2 cents and 2.1 cents, respectively. Application of the stepwise regression procedure was to predict the net profit (Y) from three independent variables, egg weight (X1), egg price (X2), and hen housed egg production (X3). Generally, LSL white layers, egg price (X2) had the highest share in profitability by 44.24% compared to hen housed egg production (X3) that share 29.98%. For LSL brown layers, egg weight (X1) is the most important factor accounting for the profitability in cents. Its relative importance to the profitability is 57.24% followed by egg price (X2) 21.25%. Hen housed egg production (X3) had very little share 0.14%.

BACKGROUND: Rainbow trout is a significant fish farming species under temperate climates. Female reproduction traits play an important role in the economy of breeding companies with the sale of fertilized eggs. The objectives of this study are threefold: to estimate the genetic parameters of female reproduction traits, to determine the genetic architecture of these traits by the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL), and to assess the expected efficiency of a pedigree-based selection (BLUP) or genomic selection for these traits. RESULTS: A pedigreed population of 1343 trout were genotyped for 57,000 SNP markers and phenotyped for seven traits at 2 years of age: spawning date, female body weight before and after spawning, the spawn weight and the egg number of the spawn, the egg average weight and average diameter. Genetic parameters were estimated in multi-trait linear animal models. Heritability estimates were moderate, varying from 0.27 to 0.44. The female body weight was not genetically correlated to any of the reproduction traits. Spawn weight showed strong and favourable genetic correlation with the number of eggs in the spawn and individual egg size traits, but the egg number was uncorrelated to the egg size traits. The genome-wide association studies showed that all traits were very polygenic since less than 10% of the genetic variance was explained by the cumulative effects of the QTLs: for any trait, only 2 to 4 QTLs were detected that explained in-between 1 and 3% of the genetic variance. Genomic selection based on a reference population of only one thousand individuals related to candidates would improve the efficiency of BLUP selection from 16 to 37% depending on traits. CONCLUSIONS: Our genetic parameter estimates made unlikely the hypothesis that selection for growth could induce any indirect improvement for female reproduction traits. It is thus important to consider direct selection for spawn weight for improving egg production traits in rainbow trout breeding programs. Due to the low proportion of genetic variance explained by the few QTLs detected for each reproduction traits, marker assisted selection cannot be effective. However genomic selection would allow significant gains of accuracy compared to pedigree-based selection.

1. Genetic (co)variances and parameters between body weights (BW) across the growth trajectory were estimated using a univariate random regression (RR) animal model. The effect of growth rates (GH) on age at first egg (AFE) and egg weight at first egg (EWFE) were explored using a series of univariate and bivariate analyses. 2. Body weights were taken from Thai native chickens at hatch day to 168 days of age. The model included interactions between age with hatch nested within year and sex as fixed effects, and random effects of direct additive genetic, direct permanent environmental, maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. All random effects were fitted as regressions to animals' age via quadratic Legendre polynomials and fitting six classes of residual variances was identified as an optimal variance structure to estimate parameters. 3. Genetic and phenotypic variances for BW increased with increasing age. Estimated heritabilities for direct additive (h2 a) and maternal genetic (h2 m) effects on BW traits ranged from 0.34 to 0.54, and 0.04 to 0.06, respectively. Estimated variance ratios for direct (c2 ape) and maternal permanent environmental (c2 mpe) effects ranged from 0.19 to 0.48 and 0.10 to 0.12, respectively. Estimated correlations between weights at different ages were high for all random effects. 4. Estimated h2 a for six GH traits ranged from 0.06 to 0.28, while for AFE and EWFE these were 0.24 and 0.16, respectively. Estimated h2 m and c2 mpe were low for GH. Estimated genetic correlations between GH and AFE ranged from -0.22 to 0.02 and, between GH and EWFE, ranged from -0.05 to 0.40. These estimates suggested that selecting high GH chickens at 28 days of age can be expected to reduce AFE and to increase EWFE.

BACKGROUND: The present study evaluated the potential of increasing dietary levels of the most limiting amino acids such as total sulfur amino acids (TSAA) with respect to mitigating the adverse effects of the inclusion of guar meal (GM) in the diet of WL layers on egg production, feed efficiency and egg weight. In total, 4928 WL (Lohmann L) hens (32 week of age) were randomly allotted to eight treatments with seven replicates of 88 birds. The dietary treatments were a set of four maize-soybean meal based diets containing four graded concentrations of TSAA (5.85, 6.18, 6.51 and 6.84 g kg-1 ) and another set of four diets containing 100 g kg-1 guar meal (GM) with similar concentrations of TSAA. RESULTS: The inclusion of 100 g kg-1 GM in the diet caused a 20%, 23%, 35.5% and 6.7% reduction in egg production, daily egg mass, feed efficiency and egg weight, respectively, when the diet contained 5.85 g kg-1 TSAA. Increasing TSAA levels in GM groups reduced the adverse effects on egg production and feed efficiency 50%, with no effect on egg weight. The TSAA requirement of WL birds fed 10% GM was estimated as 6.28-7.39 g kg-1 diet at different ages. CONCLUSION: Increasing dietary TSAA to 7.39, 6.28, 6.53 and 6.37 g kg-1 or dTSAA (digestible TSAA) to 6.53, 5.32, 5.80 and 5.63 g kg-1 during 33-36, 37-40, 41-44 and 45-48 weeks of age, respectively, may be an effective and practical strategy for reducing the adverse effects of inclusion of 100 g kg-1 GM in the diet of WL layers. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

1. The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for average egg weight (EW) and egg number (EN) at different ages in Japanese quail using multi-trait random regression (MTRR) models. 2. A total of 8534 records from 900 quail, hatched between 2014 and 2015, were used in the study. Average weekly egg weights and egg numbers were measured from second until sixth week of egg production. 3. Nine random regression models were compared to identify the best order of the Legendre polynomials (LP). The most optimal model was identified by the Bayesian Information Criterion. A model with second order of LP for fixed effects, second order of LP for additive genetic effects and third order of LP for permanent environmental effects (MTRR23) was found to be the best. 4. According to the MTRR23 model, direct heritability for EW increased from 0.26 in the second week to 0.53 in the sixth week of egg production, whereas the ratio of permanent environment to phenotypic variance decreased from 0.48 to 0.1. Direct heritability for EN was low, whereas the ratio of permanent environment to phenotypic variance decreased from 0.57 to 0.15 during the production period. 5. For each trait, estimated genetic correlations among weeks of egg production were high (from 0.85 to 0.98). Genetic correlations between EW and EN were low and negative for the first two weeks, but they were low and positive for the rest of the egg production period. 6. In conclusion, random regression models can be used effectively for analysing egg production traits in Japanese quail. Response to selection for increased egg weight would be higher at older ages because of its higher heritability and such a breeding program would have no negative genetic impact on egg production.

Mycoplasma synoviae infection of hens has been associated with problems of eggshell quality called eggshell apex abnormalities (EAA). Little is known about the quality of EAA eggs from a commercial point of view, especially during their storage. The study aimed to examine the differences between EAA and normal eggs during storage under controlled conditions in 2 seasons, summer and winter, by comparing internal and external quality parameters. In a conventional egg production farm with white laying hens of varying ages in the city of Bastos, state of São Paulo, Brazil, 232 eggs were used in the summer season and 400 eggs in the winter season. Half of the eggs had EAA, and the other half were considered normal eggs for each season. The eggs were analyzed at 2, 7, 14, 21, and 28 d after being laid and stored from 24.6 to 25.8°C in summer and from 24 to 25°C in winter. There was no difference (P > 0.05) in the average egg weight between EAA and normal eggs at any studied time point, but in both seasons, the weight loss in EAA eggs was higher than in normal eggs. The losses in Haugh unit scores from the first to the last measurements were approximately 40% regardless of egg type or season of production. In comparing eggshell thickness, only the apices of the EAA eggs were thinner (P < 0.0001) than normal eggs in the summer, but in the winter, the EAA egg apices (P < 0.0001) and sides (P = 0.03) were both thinner. The presence of EAA did not affect the eggshell weight (P > 0.05) or eggshell percentage (P > 0.05). The eggshell strength of the EAA eggs was lower (P < 0.0001) than normal eggs in both the summer (16.57%) and winter (19.86%). The presence of EAA did not affect the internal quality of the egg, but was related to a greater loss of external quality and weight during storage.

One of the main concerns for poultry producers is how to maintain egg uniformity and stability in size and weight following the rapid growth during the early laying period. In this study, we aimed to investigate the increase in egg weight with advancing hen age, and to estimate genetic parameters of these increment traits in 2 pure lines of chickens (i.e., 2,010 White Leghorn and 1,200 brown-egg dwarf hens), using the restricted maximum likelihood method with the DMU procedure. We collected age at first egg (AFE), first egg weight (FEW) and kept records of egg weight per 10 wk from 30 to 60 wk of age. Meanwhile, the increments of egg weight were calculated for the evaluation of age-dependent dynamic changes. The increment of egg weight gained dramatically before 30 wk of age and became slower with the advance of age. Heritability estimates of AFE were larger than 0.32, and the low to moderate genetic correlations between AFE and FEW were observed in the 2 lines. The FEW showed high variation level compared with egg weights at later ages in the 2 lines, and had moderate heritability estimates in White Leghorns (0.20) and dwarf hens (0.33). Egg weights at different ages were highly heritable in the 2 lines (h(2) ≥ 0.35), and had strong genetic and phenotypic correlations among different ages. The estimates of heritability for most increment traits were low to moderate, especially those increments for 10-wk intervals ranging from 0.00 to 0.14. The genetic correlations among 3 consecutive egg weight increments for 10-wk intervals were low to moderate. Our results in the 2 lines should provide important insights into the genetic architecture of increment traits and offer some suggestions for producing uniform and stable eggs in response to advancing age.

This investigation aimed to assess how Japanese quail hatchability, growth, and carcass traits were affected by quail egg weight, storage length, and their interactions. One thousand two hundred sixty eggs of the commercial Japanese quail were purchased, and the average age of the birds was 13 wk. Quail egg weights were divided into 3 groups using a 3 × 4 factorial design: small (< 11 g), medium (11-12 g), and large (> 12 g). Each group had four storage times (1, 4, 7, and 10 d) and held 105 eggs. The study used a storage room with 70% humidity and 18°C. There were 12 treatment groups. For the final 3 d of incubation, the eggs were positioned in a hatching machine after being incubated for 14 d at 37.6°C and 65% humidity. For the study, 540 one-day-old Japanese unsexed quail chicks were randomly chosen and placed in groups of 5 that resembled the distribution of eggs. Three duplicates (15 chicks each) made up each of the 4 storage periods that comprised the 180 birds. The findings showed that the percentage of hatchable eggs is significantly influenced by their weight and the length of storage; medium and heavy-weight eggs exhibited higher percentages of hatchability while holding for 7 to 10 d. However, no significant interaction was observed-additionally, heavy egg weight results in higher weight at different ages. Egg weight also significantly impacts chick weight at hatch, 3 wk, and 6 wk. Egg weight and storage time affect dressing and carcass measurement percentages. We can conclude that the best results in terms of hatch and post-hatch efficiency, as well as carcass characteristics, were obtained with medium or heavy quail eggs and storage times of either 1 d or 4 d.

Egg production is an important economic trait in layer ducks and understanding the genetics basis is important for their breeding. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for egg production traits in 303 female Longyan Shan-ma ducks was performed based on a genotyping-by-sequencing strategy. Sixty-two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with egg weight traits were identified (P < 9.48 × 10-5), including 8 SNPs at 5% linkage disequilibrium (LD)-based Bonferroni-corrected genome-wide significance level (P < 4.74 × 10-6). One hundred and nineteen SNPs were associated with egg number traits (P < 9.48 × 10-5), including 13 SNPs with 5% LD-based Bonferroni-corrected genome-wide significance (P < 4.74 × 10-6). These SNPs annotated 146 target genes which contained known candidate genes for egg production traits, such as prolactin and prolactin releasing hormone receptor. This study identified that these associated genes were significantly enriched in egg production-related pathways (P < 0.05), such as the oxytocin signaling, MAPK signaling, and calcium signaling pathways. It was notable that 18 genes were differentially expressed in ovarian tissues between higher and lower egg production in Shan-ma ducks. The identified potential candidate genes and pathways provide insight into the genetic basis underlying the egg production trait of layer ducks.

Environmental conditions profoundly impact the health, welfare, and productivity of laying hens in commercial poultry farming. We investigated the association between microclimate variations, production indices, and histopathological responses to accidental Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infection within a controlled closed-house system. The study was conducted over seven months in a laying hen facility in Cairo, Egypt. Microclimate measurements included temperature, relative humidity (RH%), air velocity (AV), and the temperature humidity index (THI) that were obtained from specific locations on the front and back sides of the facility. Productivity indices, including the egg production percentage (EPP), egg weight (EW), average daily feed intake, and feed conversion ratio, were assessed monthly. During an NDV outbreak, humoral immune responses, gross pathology, and histopathological changes were evaluated. The results demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) variations in EPP and EW between the front and back sides except in April and May. AV had a significant (p = 0.006) positive effect (Beta = 0.346) on EW on the front side. On the back side, AV had a significant (p = 0.001) positive effect (Beta = 0.474) on EW, while it negatively influenced (p = 0.027) EPP (Beta = - 0.281). However, temperature, RH%, and THI had no impact and could not serve as predictors for EPP or EW on either farm side. The humoral immune response to NDV was consistent across microclimates, highlighting the resilience of hens. Histopathological examination revealed characteristic NDV-associated lesions, with no significant differences between the microclimates. This study underscores the significance of optimizing microclimate conditions to enhance laying performance by providing tailored environmental management strategies based on seasonal variations, ensuring consistent airflow, particularly near cooling pads and exhaust fans, and reinforcing the importance of biosecurity measures under field challenges with continuous monitoring and adjustment.

Probiotics are safe, inexpensive, and effective feed additives, and Clostridium butyricum (CB) has been reported to regulate bone health in addition to having conventional probiotic effects. The bone health of laying hens is closely related to their production performance. Here, we investigated the effects of CB supplementation on the bone health and performance of laying hens. We added CB to the feed of green-shell laying hens, Luhua laying hens, and Hy-line Brown laying hens and examined changes in body weight, feed intake, egg production performance, and egg quality to determine the impact of CB on production performance. The impact of CB on the bones of laying hens was determined by analyzing the bone index, bone bending strength, bone calcium and phosphorus content, and bone mineral density. The study found that CB had little effect on the body weight and feed intake of laying hens. Feed additions of 108 and 109 CFU/kg CB can significantly increase the tibia index and bone mineral density of four-week-old green-shell laying hens. Feed additions of 107 and 108 CFU/kg CB can significantly increase the average egg weight, eggshell weight, and tibia index of 26-week-old Luhua laying hens, but 107 CFU/kg CB will reduce the egg production rate. Adding 108 CFU/kg CB to feed can significantly increase the average egg weight, eggshell weight, and tibia bending strength of 40-week-old Hy-line Brown laying hens. In summary, adding 108 CFU/kg CB is beneficial to the bone and production health of laying hens.

This experiment was aimed to investigate the effects of Phytosterol Ester (PSE) supplementation on egg weight, biochemical indices, liver immunity and gut microbiota of Hy-Line Brown laying hens during peak laying period. A total of 256 healthy Hy-Line Brown laying hens were randomly allocated into 4 groups. Laying hens in the control group were fed a basal diet (CON), while those in the experimental groups received a basal diet containing 10 mg/kg (PSE10), 20 mg/kg (PSE20), or 40 mg/kg (PSE40) mg/kg PSE, respectively. We found that PSE supplementation significantly increased the egg weight in PSE20 and PSE40 groups (P < 0.05) and the serum magnesium (Mg) content in PSE10 and PSE20 groups (P < 0.05), but significantly decreased the serum calcium (Ca) content in PSE40 group (P < 0.05). Moreover, PSE supplementation significantly increased the total protein (TP) content of ovary in all experimental groups (P < 0.01) and decreased the total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) contents of the ovary in PSE20 and PSE40 groups (P < 0.001). In serum, PSE supplementation significantly increased TP content in all experimental groups (P < 0.01) and albumin (ALB) content in PSE20 group (P < 0.05). Alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in PSE20 group, TC content in all experimental groups and LDL-C content in PSE20 and PSE40 groups were significantly decreased (P < 0.05). In egg yolk, PSE supplementation significantly increased TP content in PSE20 and PSE40 groups (P < 0.01) and decreased TC content in PSE20 group (P < 0.01). In liver immunofluorescence, PSE supplementation altered the content of CD163, especially in PSE20 group. Dietary PSE significantly decreased the relative abundance of Bacteroides and Desulfovibrio, while increased the relative abundance of Faecalibacterium, g_unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae, g_norank_f_Ruminococcaceae, g__unclassified_f__Oscillospiraceae and other bacteria. In conclusion, PSE supplementation increased the average egg weight and total protein, lowered egg yolk, serum and ovary cholesterol of Hy-Line Brown laying hens. At the same time, it can also promote serum magnesium levels, enhanced liver immunity, and improved gut microflora.

Egg weight (EW) and age at first egg (AFE) are economically important traits in breeder chicken production. The genetic basis of these traits, however, is far from understood, especially for broiler breeders. In this study, genetic parameter estimation, genome-wide association analysis, meta-analysis, and selective sweep analysis were carried out to identify genetic loci associated with EW and AFE in 6,842 broiler breeders. The study found that the heritability of EW ranged from 0.42 to 0.44, while the heritability of AFE was estimated at 0.33 in the maternal line. Meta-analysis and selective sweep analysis identified two colocalized regions on GGA4 that significantly influenced EW at 32 wk (EW32W) and at 43 wk (EW43W) with both paternal and maternal lines. The genes AR, YIPF6, and STARD8 were located within the significant region (GGA4: 366.86-575.50 kb), potentially affecting EW through the regulation of follicle development, cell proliferation, and lipid transfer etc. The promising genes LCORL and NCAPG were positioned within the significant region (GGA4:75.35-75.42 Mb), potentially influencing EW through pleiotropic effects on growth and development. Additionally, 3 significant regions were associated with AFE on chromosomes GGA7, GGA19, and GGA27. All of these factors affected the AFE by influencing ovarian development. In our study, the genomic information from both paternal and maternal lines was used to identify genetic regions associated with EW and AFE. Two genomic regions and eight genes were identified as the most likely candidates affecting EW and AFE. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the genetic basis of egg production traits in broiler breeders and provide new insights into future technology development.

In avian species, positive relationships between egg weight (EW) and body weight (BW) have been reported. However, the correlation between the body growth rate and different weights of eggs from genetically mutated avian species was not studied yet. Myostatin (Mstn), an anti-myogenic factor, mutant quail were recently developed, and it was reported that EW produced from Mstn homozygous mutant quail (HO) was heavier compared to those from wild-type quail (WT). In the current study, distributions of pre-incubated EW and associations between EW and BW were compared between the Mstn mutant and WT quail lines. Average egg weight for the HO group was significantly heavier than the WT (P < 0.001) and the number of eggs having heavier EW (over 11 g) was higher in the HO compared to the WT (P < 0.01). BWs at wk (W) 0, 4, and 6 after hatch were also significantly greater in the HO (P < 0.001 in all groups). In addition, linear regression analyses revealed positive relationships between EW and BW from W0 to W6, regardless of sexes and genotypes. Furthermore, Mstn mutant quail were a heavier BW compared to the WT quail originated from eggs with similar weights. These data indicate that increased BW by Mstn mutation is contributed by increased EW and/or growth promoting activity of Mstn mutation independent of increasing egg sizes. These findings provide Mstn as a desirable genetic factor for selection of poultry breeds with superior growth. In addition, the knowledge gained from this study could inspire similar proof-of-concept studies involving standard and commercial lines of poultry.

Egg weight is an important indicator of egg phenotypic traits, which directly affects the economic benefits of the poultry industry. In the present research, laying ducks were classified into high egg weight (HEW) and light egg weight (LEW) groups. To reveal the underlying mechanism that may be responsible for the egg weight difference, the integrated analysis of transcriptomes and serum metabolomics was performed between the two groups. The results showed extremely significant differences (P < 0.01) in the total egg weight at 300 d, and average egg weight between the HEW and LEW groups. 733, 591, 82, and 74 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the liver, magnum, F1, and F5 (hierarchical follicles) follicle membrane, respectively. The candidate genes were screened further from the perspective of forming an egg. In terms of egg yolk formation, the functional analysis revealed fatty acid metabolism-related pathways account for 36% of the liver's top pathways, including fatty acid biosynthesis, folate biosynthesis, fatty acid metabolism, and glycerol lipid metabolism pathways. FASN gene was identified as the key candidate gene by comprehensive analysis of gene expression and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. In the follicle membrane, the DEGs were mainly enriched in protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, and MAPK signaling pathway, and HSPA2, HSPA8, BAG3 genes were identified as crucial candidate genes. In terms of egg white formation, the functional analysis revealed protein metabolism-related pathways account for 40% of the magnum's top pathways, which includes protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum pathway. HSP90AA1 and HSPA8 genes were identified as key candidate genes. In addition, the integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis showed that arginine and proline metabolism pathways could contribute to differences in egg weight. Thus, we speculated that the potential candidate genes, regulatory pathways, and metabolic biomarkers mentioned above might be responsible for the egg weight difference. These findings might provide a theoretical basis for improving the egg weight of ducks.

Defective eggs diminish the value of laying hen production, particularly in cage-free systems with a higher incidence of floor eggs. To enhance quality, machine vision and image processing have facilitated the development of automated grading and defect detection systems. Additionally, egg measurement systems utilize weight-sorting for optimal market value. However, few studies have integrated deep learning and machine vision techniques for combined egg classification and weighting. To address this gap, a two-stage model was developed based on real-time multitask detection (RTMDet) and random forest networks to predict egg category and weight. The model uses convolutional neural network (CNN) and regression techniques were used to perform joint egg classification and weighing. RTMDet was used to sort and extract egg features for classification, and a Random Forest algorithm was used to predict egg weight based on the extracted features (major axis and minor axis). The results of the study showed that the best achieved accuracy was 94.8% and best R2 was 96.0%. In addition, the model can be used to automatically exclude non-standard-size eggs and eggs with exterior issues (e.g., calcium deposit, stains, and cracks). This detector is among the first models that perform the joint function of egg-sorting and weighing eggs, and is capable of classifying them into five categories (intact, crack, bloody, floor, and non-standard) and measuring them up to jumbo size. By implementing the findings of this study, the poultry industry can reduce costs and increase productivity, ultimately leading to better-quality products for consumers.

OBJECTIVE: Current quail production is configured as an economic activity in scale. Advancements in quail nutrition have been limited to areas such as breeding and, automation of facilities and ambience. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance responses, liver and oviduct morphometry, and liver histology of Japanese laying quails subjected to different levels of nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (MEn). METHODS: A completely random design was used that consisted of nine levels of MEn, six replicates, and five hens per cage with a total of 270 quails. The experimental period lasted for 10 weeks. The variables of performance were subjected to analysis of variance and then regression analysis using the broken-line model. The morphometric and histological variables were subjected to multivariate exploratory techniques. RESULTS: The MEn levels influenced the responses to zootechnical performance. The brokenline model estimated the maximum responses for feed intake, egg production, egg weight, and egg mass as 3,040, 2,820, 1,802, and 2,960 kcal of MEn per kg of diet, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that the occurrence of hepatic steatosis and increased levels of Kupffer cells were not related to MEn levels. CONCLUSION: The level of 2,960 kcal/kg of MEn meets performance variable requirements without compromising hepatic physiology.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of dietary free fatty acid (FFA) content and the degree of saturation on egg quality, yolk fatty acid (FA) profile, and yolk cholesterol content. For a 15-wk period, a total of 144 laying hens (19-wk-old) were randomly assigned to 8 treatments arranged in a 2 × 4 factorial design, with 2 sources of crude oil (soybean oil and palm oil) and 4 levels of FFA (10, 20, 30, and 45%). The dietary treatments were achieved by progressively substituting the original oils with equivalent amounts of their corresponding acid oils (soybean acid oil and palm fatty acid distillate, respectively). No differences in ADFI or egg mass were found. However, dietary FFA reduced egg production (linear, P < 0.05) and increased the feed conversion ratio (linear, P < 0.05). Higher levels of FFA in soybean diets resulted in higher egg weight with higher albumen and yolk weights (linear, P < 0.01). Palm diets presented higher yolk:albumen ratio than soybean diets (P < 0.001), but the effect of FFA did not follow a linear trend. Hens fed soybean diets laid eggs with higher Haugh units (HU) than palm diets (P < 0.001), although increasing the dietary FFA% reduced the HU values in both (linear, P < 0.001). Palm diets enhanced shell quality with greater resistance to breakage, and higher dry matter and ash content than soybean diets (P < 0.05). No differences in egg chemical composition and yolk cholesterol content were found (P > 0.05). The saturation degree had a significant effect on all the analyzed yolk FA (P < 0.001) except for arachidonic acid (C20:4 n-6), whereas increasing the FFA content did not affect to a great extent. These results show that varying dietary FFA level did not affect egg quality and yolk composition as much as the dietary fat source did, supporting the use of acid oils and fatty acid distillates as fat ingredients for feed.
