RESUMEN

High value-added products recovery from algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) has received great attention recently. This study aimed to explore the role of different light wavelengths in regulating granule formation, protein and lipid production, and microbial functions. Bacterial granular sludge (BGS, R0) was most conducive to forming ABGS under blue (R2) light with the highest chlorophyll a (10.2 mg/g-VSS) and diameter (1800 µm), followed by red (R1) and white (R3) lights. R0-R3 acquired high protein contents (>164.8 mg/g-VSS) with essential amino acids above 44.4%, all of which were suitable for recycling, but R2 was the best. Also, blue light significantly increased total lipid production, while red light promoted the accumulation of some unsaturated fatty acids (C18:2 and C18:3). Some unique algae and dominant bacteria (e.g., Stigeoclonium, Chlamydomonas, and Flavobacteria) enrichment and some key functions (e.g., amino acid, fatty acid, and lipid biosynthesis) up-regulation in R2 might help to improve proteins and lipids quality. Combined, this study provides valuable guidance for protein and lipid recovery from ABGS.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farming is one of the major aquacultures in Turkey. Some conditions in fish farming can induce oxidative stress leading to the deterioration in properties such as appearance/color, texture, and flavor in fish meat. This situation may cause the consumer not to prefer edible fish. Although there are some studies on the impacts of light intensity on fish welfare, the changes in the antioxidant enzyme activities have not been elucidated. In the current study, it was intended to examine in rainbow trout how cultivating under different wavelengths affects the antioxidant enzymes and acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity, because its activity is associated with oxidative stress, and also the determination of which light is suitable for fish welfare was aimed. Rainbow trout larvae were grown under four lights with different wavelengths: natural sunlight and incandescent long-wave (red light), medium-wave (green light), and short-wave (blue light) LED light. The experiment lasted for 64 days. Biochemical assays were carried on in the brain, gill, and liver of rainbow trout. Antioxidant enzymes and AChE activity, which play an important role in the central nervous system, were assayed. In gill tissues, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and AChE activities increased under all three light wavelengths. In the liver, while activities of antioxidant enzymes and AChE decreased in red light, all of them increased in blue and green light. In the brain, GPx, GST, G6PD, and SOD activities were reduced but AChE activity did not alter under all three light sources. In conclusion, light sources with different spectral structures caused important changes in the activities of antioxidant enzymes in rainbow trout. On this basis, it may be thought that this may be a response to the changing redox status of a cell. Based on our results, blue light sources may be suggested for fish welfare in rainbow trout culture, and providing fish welfare by changing light sources can be easy and cheap in fish farming.

Improvement of sugarcane is hampered due to its narrow genetic base, and the difficulty in synchronizing flowering further hinders the exploitation of the genetic potential of available germplasm resources. Therefore, the continuous evaluation and optimization of flowering control and induction techniques are vital for sugarcane improvement. In view of this, the review was conducted to investigate the current understanding of photoperiodic and lighting treatment effects on sugarcane flowering and its genetic regulation. Photoperiod facilities have made a significant contribution to flowering control in sugarcane; however, inductive photoperiods are still unknown for some genotypes, and some intended crosses are still impossible to produce because of unresponsive varieties. The effectiveness of lower red/far-red ratios in promoting sugarcane flowering has been widely understood. Furthermore, there is vast potential for utilizing blue, red, and far-red light wavelengths in the flowering control of sugarcane. In this context, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) remain efficient sources of light. Therefore, the combined use of photoperiod regimes with different light wavelengths and optimization of such treatment combinations might help to control and induce flowering in sugarcane parental clones. In sugarcane, FLOWERING LOCUS T (ScFT) orthologues from ScFT1 to ScFT13 have been identified, and interestingly, ScFT3 has evidently been identified as a floral inducer in sugarcane. However, independent assessments of different FT-like gene family members are recommended to comprehensively understand their role in the regulation of flowering. Similarly, we believe this review provides substantial information that is vital for the manipulation of flowering and exploitation of germplasm resources in sugarcane breeding.

Fungi are capable of sensing light from ultraviolet to far-red and they use light as a source of information about the environment anticipating stress and adverse conditions. Lentinus crinitus is a lignin-degrading fungus which produces laccase and other enzymes of biotechnological interest. The effect of blue light on fungal enzymatic activity has been studied; however, it has not been found studies on the effect of the blue light on carbohydrate-active enzymes and on mycelial biomass production of L. crinitus. We aimed to investigate carbohydrate-active enzymes activity and mycelial biomass production of L. crinitus cultivated under continuous illumination with blue light. L. crinitus was cultivated in malt extract medium in the dark, without agitation, and under continuous illumination with blue light-emitting diodes. The blue light reduced the total cellulase, pectinase and xylanase activities but increased the endoglucanase activity. Blue light reduced the mycelial growth of L. crinitus in 26% and the enzymatic activity-to-mycelial biomass ratio (U mg-1 dry basis) increased in 10% total cellulase, 33% endoglucanase, and 16% pectinase activities. Also, it is suggested that L. crinitus has a photosensory system and it could lead to new process of obtaining enzymes of biotechnological interest.


Fungos são capazes de sentir a luz com comprimentos de onda que variam do ultravioleta ao infravermelho e usam a luz como fonte de informação sobre o ambiente, antecipando condições adversas e de estresse. Lentinus crinitus é um fungo ligninolítico que produz lacase e outras enzimas de interesse biotecnológico. O efeito da luz azul na atividade enzimática de fungos já foi estudado, contudo, ainda não há estudos sobre o efeito da luz azul na produção de enzimas ativas sobre carboidratos (CAZymes, carbohydrate-active enzymes) e de biomassa micelial de L. crinitus. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a avitivade de CAZymes e a produção de biomassa micelial de L. crinitus cultivado sob iluminação continua com luz azul. L. crinitus foi cultivado em meio extrato de malte, sem agitação, na ausência de luz e sob luz continua fornecida por diodos emissores de luz azul. A luz azul reduziu a atividade de cellulase total, pectinase e xilanase, mas aumentou a atividade de endoglucanase. A luz azul reduziu o crescimento micelial de L. crinitus em 26% e aumentou a razão atividade enzimática/biomassa micelial (U mg-1 em base seca) de cellulase total em 10%, endoglucanase em 33% e pectinase em 16%. Além disso, sugere-se que L. crinitus possua um sistema fotossensorial que poderia ser explorado para a otimização de bioprocessos que visam a obtenção de enzimas de interesse biotecnológico.
