BACKGROUND: The onset time of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) may be closely related to the working style and living habits of people, which are determined by different income sources in China. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the Circadian Variations in the occurrence of ICH from different sources of income. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 4,327 patients with first-ever ICH. Based on the time of day at which the patients developed symptoms, the classifiable onset time was assigned to one of eight three-hour intervals. And based on different income sources, they were categorized into three groups: Farmers, Wage-earners, and Freelancers. Demographic and risk factors of patients were then summarized, and the circadian variation of the 3 groups of patients' known time of onset and those stratified by sex and age were analyzed. RESULTS: The frequency of ICH onset exhibited significant circadian variation among the 3 income groups, demonstrating a bimodal distribution in the daytime, with a nadir during the night (all P < 0.001). Three groups showed a significant initial peak between 06:01 and 09:00, and the same peak was observed in their subgroups of sex and age. In the 3 income source groups, there was a smaller second peak that between 15:01 and 18:00 for Farmers and Wage-earners and 18:01 and 21:00 for Freelancers. After stratification by sex and age, the second peak was between 18:01 and 21:00 for female in Farmers, female in Freelancers, under 65 years of age in Wage-earners and 65 years or older in Freelancers, while 15:01 and 18:00 for the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: Different circadian variations of ICH onset time are found in patients with different income sources in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality cohort. Moreover, the frequency and distribution pattern of peak hours may be closely related to the working style and living habits of people with different income sources.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by an irresistible need to move the legs while sitting or lying at night with insomnia as a frequent consequence. Human RLS has been associated with abnormalities in the endogenous opioid system, the dopaminergic system, the iron regulatory system, anemia, and inflammatory and auto-immune disorders. Our previous work indicates that mice lacking all three subtypes of opioid receptors have a phenotype similar to that of human RLS. To study the roles of each opioid receptor subtype in RLS, we first used mu opioid receptor knockout (MOR KO) mice based on our earlier studies using postmortem brain and cell culture. The KO mice showed decreased hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cells (RBCs), with an appearance of microcytic RBCs indicating anemia. Together with decreased serum iron and transferrin, but increased ferritin levels, the anemia is similar to that seen with chronic inflammation in humans. A decreased serum iron level was also observed in the wildtype mice treated with an MOR antagonist. Iron was increased in the liver and spleen of the KO mice. Normal circadian variations in the dopaminergic and serotoninergic systems were absent in the KO mice. The KO mice showed hyperactivity and increased thermal sensitivity in wakefulness primarily during what would normally be the sleep phase similar to that seen in human RLS. Deficits in endogenous opioid system transmission could predispose to anemia of inflammation and loss of circadian variations in dopaminergic or serotonergic systems, thereby contributing to an RLS-like phenotype.

The problem of the correlation of indolic molecules with special regard to melatonin and immune processes has been widely investigated. However, there are only few studies focusing on circadian variation of peripheral blood leukocytes. The purpose of this study is thus to understand the influence of MLT on leukocyte populations and its correlation with leukocyte distribution. This is accomplished by administrating placebo and melatonin to different groups of individuals and by performing a biophysical Gaussian analysis on the number of leukocytes by means of a comparison of their p.m. vs. a.m. variations under the effect of placebo and of melatonin and via a comparison in the morning between leukocytes population of untreated group and MLT group. It is shown that: (a) melatonin has the effect of narrowing the normal distribution concentrating most of the individuals towards the mean value of the observed variation of leukocytes population and (b) the individuals who have not received either placebo or supplement have a leukocyte population that follows a normal distribution. These results confirm the crucial role played by melatonin, as the most representative of indolic amide in biological systems, in the circadian peripheral variations of leukocyte numbers because counts of white blood cells are essential in medical urgency and differential diagnosis situations. Hence, further studies are suggested to account for these physiological variations and for the evaluation of the full involvement of the action of MLT on leukocytes distribution.

DNA synthesis of hepatocytes in two areas of Intact and Hepatectomized young mice liver along a circadian period was studied. DNA synthesis was significantly different at all analyzed time points in Intact and Hepatectomized animals. Differences between periportal and perivenous hepatocytes were found in hepatectomized animals at 04/42 and 08/46 hr of day/hour post-hepatectomy. DNAs peak in periportal hepatocytes regenerating liver occurs 4 hr earlier than in perivenous hepatocytes, probably reflecting their shorter G1 phase. Besides, daily mean values of regenerating livers were higher than those observed in Intact animals, as a consequence of surgical removal.

Objective: As a recently defined disease entity, vestibular migraine (VM) is a variant of migraine with broad spectrum of manifestations. We evaluated a prospective cohort of patients with VM in two centers to assess severity of VM attacks and investigate its contributing factors in patients with VM. Methods: Adult participants with the diagnosis of VM or probable VM were enrolled according to the 2012 International Headache Society-Bárány Society Criteria. Every outpatient was followed up for 6 months to record the occurrence of VM attacks. Clinical data such as age, sex, number of VM attacks, severity on the visual analog scale, and lipid intake were collected and analyzed. Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Horne and Ostberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaires, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were also administered to find contributing factors. Results: During a 6-month clinical follow-up, 313 VM attack were reported. According to the Visual Analog Scale, the patients were divided into two groups. Then univariate and multivariable analyses were conducted. Among the risk factors, duration of illness (adjusted OR, 1.041; 95% CI, 1.010-1.073; P = 0.009), time of onset: 00:00:00-12:00:00 (adjusted OR, 3.961; 95% CI, 1.966-7.979; P < 0.001) and PSQI scores (adjusted OR, 1.086; 95% CI, 1.002-1.178; P = 0.046) were significantly associated with the severity of VM attack assessed by VAS. Conclusion: The data suggest that patients tended to experienced more severe VM attacks in early hours of a day, especially for those sufferers with longer duration of illness or poor sleep quality. Targeted management of such factors is required to reduce the severity of attacks.

The interaction between meal timing and light regulates circadian rhythms in mammals and not only determines the sleep-wake pattern but also the activity of the endocrine system. Related with that, the necessity to fulfill energy needs is a driving force that requires the participation of cognitive skills whose performance has been shown to undergo circadian variations. These facts have led to the concept that cognition and feeding behaviour can be analysed from a chronobiological perspective. In this context, research carried out during the last two decades has evidenced the link between feeding behaviour/nutritional habits and cognitive processes, and has highlighted the impact of circadian disorders on cognitive decline. All that has allowed hypothesizing a tight relationship between nutritional factors, chronobiology, and cognition. In this connection, experimental diets containing elevated amounts of fat and sugar (high-fat diets; HFDs) have been shown to alter in rodents the circadian distribution of meals, and to have a negative impact on cognition and motivational aspects of behaviour that disappear when animals are forced to adhere to a standard temporal eating pattern. In this review, we will present relevant studies focussing on the effect of HFDs on cognitive aspects of behaviour, paying particular attention to the influence that chronobiological alterations caused by these diets may have on hippocampaldependent cognition.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the effect of a standardized breakfast or lunch before blood sampling on 77 analytes. DESIGN AND METHODS: The mean difference between assays from 20 healthy adults was calculated on blood samples taken before and after food intake. Significant differences were tested using two-tailed Student t-test and compared to the acceptable limits derived from analytical and intraindividual biological variation. RESULTS: Most of the analytes investigated were not significantly affected by food intake. Six of them were influenced by breakfast or lunch: triglycerides, glucose, creatinine, C-peptide and insulin were significantly upregulated, whereas testosterone was downregulated. Fourteen parameters were more influenced by time of sampling than by meals: nine decreased during the day (total bilirubin, BNP, myoglobin, cortisol, TSH, C-telopeptide, prolactin, ACTH, uric acid) and two increased (white blood cells, neutrophils). Three parameters showed levels that were similar at 9:00 am and 5:00 pm but their lowest level at 12:30 pm (inorganic phosphorus, osteocalcin, PTH). CONCLUSIONS: Fasting is necessary for some laboratory tests. Clinicians should be aware of variations due to sampling time before ordering non-fasting tests, and in the subsequent interpretation of results.

The loaded disk culture system is an intervertebral disk (IVD)-oriented bioreactor developed by the VU Medical Center (VUmc, Amsterdam, The Netherlands), which has the capacity of maintaining up to 12 IVDs in culture, for approximately 3 weeks after extraction. Using this system, eight goat IVDs were provided with the essential nutrients and submitted to compression tests without losing their biomechanical and physiological properties, for 22 days. Based on previous reports (Paul et al., 2012, 2013; Detiger et al., 2013), four of these IVDs were kept in physiological condition (control) and the other four were previously injected with chondroitinase ABC (CABC), in order to promote degenerative disk disease (DDD). The loading profile intercalated 16 h of activity loading with 8 h of loading recovery to express the standard circadian variations. The displacement behavior of these eight IVDs along the first 2 days of the experiment was numerically reproduced, using an IVD osmo-poro-hyper-viscoelastic and fiber-reinforced finite element (FE) model. The simulations were run on a custom FE solver (Castro et al., 2014). The analysis of the experimental results allowed concluding that the effect of the CABC injection was only significant in two of the four IVDs. The four control IVDs showed no signs of degeneration, as expected. In what concerns to the numerical simulations, the IVD FE model was able to reproduce the generic behavior of the two groups of goat IVDs (control and injected). However, some discrepancies were still noticed on the comparison between the injected IVDs and the numerical simulations, namely on the recovery periods. This may be justified by the complexity of the pathways for DDD, associated with the multiplicity of physiological responses to each direct or indirect stimulus. Nevertheless, one could conclude that ligaments, muscles, and IVD covering membranes could be added to the FE model, in order to improve its accuracy and properly describe the recovery periods.

PURPOSE--To determinate the circadian daily and weekly variations in the incidence of sudden death due to Chagas' disease. METHODS--In 50 chronic chagasic individuals with sudden death due to Chagas' disease and in 473 individuals with natural, not sudden death, we analyzed both the day of the week and the time of the death. Statistical tests were applied to determine the significance of the difference between proportions and averages. RESULTS--For the chagasic group the values indicated a highly significant excess of lethality for the period between 12 and 6pm. The occurrence of the sudden death was the same in the different days of the week for both groups. CONCLUSION--The observed results suggest that the sudden death associated with Chagas' disease has a circadian pattern with a vespertine peak. Weekly variations in the sudden death of chronic chagasic individuals were not detected
