RESUMEN

Rapid evolution in colonising populations can alter our ability to predict future range expansions. Recent theory suggests that the dynamics of replicate range expansions are less variable, and hence more predictable, with increased selection at the expanding range front. Here, we test whether selection from environmental gradients across space produces more consistent range expansion speeds, using the experimental evolution of replicate duckweed populations colonising landscapes with and without a temperature gradient. We found that the range expansion across a temperature gradient was slower on average, with range-front populations displaying higher population densities, and genetic signatures and trait changes consistent with directional selection. Despite this, we found that with a spatial gradient range expansion speed became more variable and less consistent among replicates over time. Our results therefore challenge current theory, highlighting that chance can still shape the genetic response to selection to influence our ability to predict range expansion speeds.

AbstractSelection pressures differ along environmental gradients, and traits tightly linked to fitness (e.g., the visual system) are expected to track such variation. Along gradients, adaptation to local conditions might be due to heritable and nonheritable environmentally induced variation. Disentangling these sources of phenotypic variation requires studying closely related populations in nature and in the laboratory. The Nicaraguan lakes represent an environmental gradient in photic conditions from clear crater lakes to very turbid great lakes. From two old, turbid great lakes, Midas cichlid fish (Amphilophus cf. citrinellus) independently colonized seven isolated crater lakes of varying light conditions, resulting in a small adaptive radiation. We estimated variation in visual sensitivities along this photic gradient by measuring cone opsin gene expression among lake populations. Visual sensitivities observed in all seven derived crater lake populations shifted predictably in direction and magnitude, repeatedly mirroring changes in photic conditions. Comparing wild-caught and laboratory-reared fish revealed that 48% of this phenotypic variation is genetically determined and evolved rapidly. Decreasing intrapopulation variation as environments become spectrally narrower suggests that different selective landscapes operate along the gradient. We conclude that the power to predict phenotypic evolution along gradients depends on both the magnitude of environmental change and the selective landscape shape.

Sexual dimorphism can evolve in response to sex-specific selection pressures that vary across habitats. We studied sexual differences in subterranean amphipods Niphargus living in shallow subterranean habitats (close to the surface), cave streams (intermediate), and cave lakes (deepest and most isolated). These three habitats differ because at greater depths there is lower food availability, reduced predation, and weaker seasonality. Additionally, species near the surface have a near-even adult sex ratio (ASR), whereas species from cave lakes have a female-biased ASR. We hypothesized (a) a decrease in sexual dimorphism from shallow subterranean habitats to cave lake species because of weaker sexual selection derived from changes in the ASR and (b) an increase in female body size in cave lakes because of stronger fecundity selection on account of oligotrophy, reduced predation, and weaker seasonality. We measured body size and two sexually dimorphic abdominal appendages for all 31 species and several behaviours related to male competition (activity, risk-taking, exploration) for 12 species. Species with an equal ASR that live close to the surface exhibited sexual dimorphism in all three morphological traits, but not in behaviour. The body size of females increased from the surface to cave lakes, but no such trend was observed in males. In cave lake species, males and females differed neither morphologically nor behaviourally. Our results are consistent with the possibility that sexual and fecundity selection covary across the three habitats, which indirectly and directly, respectively, shape the degree of sexual dimorphism in Niphargus species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Latitudinal diversity gradients have been intimately linked to the tropical niche conservatism hypothesis, which posits that there has been a strong filter due to the challenges faced by ancestral tropical lineages to adapt to low temperatures and colonize extra-tropical regions. In liverworts, species richness is higher towards the tropics, but the centres of diversity of the basal lineages are distributed across extra-tropical regions, pointing to the colonization of tropical regions by phylogenetically clustered assemblages of species of temperate origin. Here, we test this hypothesis through analyses of the relationship between macroclimatic variation and phylogenetic diversity in Chinese liverworts. METHODS: Phylogenetic diversity metrics and their standardized effect sizes for liverworts in each of the 28 regional floras at the province level in China were related to latitude and six climate variables using regression analysis. We conducted variation partitioning analyses to determine the relative importance of each group of climatic variables. KEY RESULTS: We find that the number of species decreases with latitude, whereas phylogenetic diversity shows the reverse pattern, and that phylogenetic diversity is more strongly correlated with temperature-related variables compared with precipitation-related variables. CONCLUSIONS: We interpret the opposite patterns observed in phylogenetic diversity and species richness in terms of a more recent origin of tropical diversity coupled with higher extinctions in temperate regions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elevation is a major factor shaping plant populations on a global scale. At the same time, reproductive traits play a major role in plant fitness. With increasing altitude and increasingly harsh conditions, decreases in pollinator visitation rates, sexual investment, seed set, and heterozygosity (due to increased selfing) are expected. In response, selection and/or phenotypic plasticity could lead to an increase in plants' floral displays to increase their attractiveness to pollinators and compensates for the negative fitness impacts of reduced pollinator activity. A large body of literature tests these hypotheses at the among-species level, but empirical evidence at the population level (i.e., wihin-species), where adaptive change may occur, is still limited to species-specific studies. Unravelling the global patterns of change in the reproductive traits, flower visitation rates and heterozygosity of plant populations across variable environmental conditions, especially climate can help us to understand how species are able to cope with shifting conditions associated with global change, particularly in mountains. Here, we used meta-analytic approaches to assess the reproductive changes of plant populations in response to elevation on a global scale. METHODS: We used a data set with 243 paired populations of plants at 'lower' and 'higher' elevations, spanning an elevation range of 0-4380 m asl and taken from 121 angiosperm species and 115 published studies. We analyzed changes in flower number, size and longevity, pollen production, flower visitation rate, seed set and expected heterozygosity.We then tested whether the observed patterns for each trait were dependent upon plant phylogeny and various ecogeographical factors and species traits. KEY RESULTS: We found no evidence of elevation having a global effect on the reproductive traits of angiosperm populations. This null global pattern was not affected by geograph or phylogenetics. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that changes in reproductive traits, flower visitation rates, and heterozygosity in plant populations across elevations are specific to each species and ecosystem. Hence, macroevolutionary (across species) and macroecological patterns of elevation of plant reproduction reported previously are apparently not simply the outcome of microevolutionary changes (within species). This apparent specificity of response across plant species poses difficulties in predicting the effects of global changes and, specifically, climatic changes, on the fate of plant species, populations, and communities.

Many cooperatively breeding species live in groups with complex structure-large group sizes, low and variable kin structure, and multiple breeding pairs. Since these mixed-kin groups typically form because of immigration of unrelated individuals of both sexes in addition to limited offspring dispersal, differences in patterns of dispersal can generate variation in group structure, even within the same species or population. Here, we examine how environmentally mediated dispersal patterns influence variation in group structure in the plural breeding superb starling (Lamprotornis superbus), an avian cooperative breeder that inhabits a spatiotemporally variable savanna environment and forms mixed-kin groups with variable group sizes and more than one breeding pair per group. Using 4068 genome-wide polymorphic loci and fine-scale, remotely sensed ecological data from 22 groups sampled across a nearly 200 km2 environmental gradient in central Kenya, we find evidence of not only frequent and long-distance dispersal in both sexes (low isolation-by-distance and weak genetic structure), but also directional dispersal from small groups in lower quality habitat with low normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) to large groups in higher quality habitat with high NDVI. Additionally, we find stronger genetic structure among groups in lower quality habitat, and higher genetic diversity and lower relatedness of groups in higher quality habitat. Previous work using long-term data from groups in the same population has shown that groups with lower relatedness are larger and have more breeding pairs. Long-distance, directional dispersal to maximise individual fitness can thus lead to smaller and simpler kin-based social groups in lower quality habitat, but larger and more complex mixed-kin groups in higher quality habitat. Such intraspecific, within-population variation in group structure, including variation in kin structure of social groups, could have profound implications for the relative importance of the evolutionary mechanisms (i.e. direct vs. indirect fitness benefits) underlying the formation of cooperative societies.

Agricultural drainage ditches (ADDs) are ubiquitous and regarded as active zones for biogeochemical reactions and microbe-mediated pollutant removal. However, little is known about the microbial distribution and community assembly in ADDs. Here, a typical large-scale irrigation district, including five orders of farmland drainage systems (namely field, sublateral, head, branch, and trunk ditches that could efficiently remove excess water from paddy fields to downstream water bodies), was selected to investigate the ecological processes of microbial communities and N- and P-transformation processes in multistage ditches. We found that scale effects drove distinct environmental gradients and microbial community dissimilarities and that the five ordered ditches were grouped into three clusters (field vs. sublateral vs. head, branch, and trunk ditches). Specifically, the microbial communities in the field ditches located adjacent to the paddy fields were strongly selected by agricultural fertilization and irrigation drainage, enriching salt-tolerant microbes with high nitrification and inorganic P solubilization capabilities. In comparison, the sublateral ditches showed the highest removal performance for total nitrogen (13.28-55.80%) and total phosphorus (9.06-65.07%) during the growth of rice, which was mainly attributed to the enrichment of versatile microbiota (e.g., C39, Nitrospira, and Novosphingobium) as a result of the increased stochastic processes driven by the low redox potential. Notably, the specific gene (i.e., hzsB) for anaerobic ammonium oxidation in sublateral ditches was 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than in adjacent ditches, further contributing to N loss. As field water was discharged into the large-sized head, branch, and trunk ditches, the nutrient levels decreased sharply. At the same time, deterministic processes gained more importance (∼82%), leading to the flourishing of Synechococcus and increasing the potential risk of eutrophication. Overall, the microbial communities in multistage ADDs were co-shaped by agricultural practices and ditch size, which further governed the N and P removal performance. These results provide unique insights into microbiota assembly patterns and dynamics in multistage ADDs and important ecological knowledge for controlling agricultural non-point source pollutants by managing of small-sized ditches.

How communities of living organisms assemble has long been a central question in ecology. The impact of habitat filtering and limiting similarity on plant community structures is well known, as both processes are influenced by individual responses to environmental fluctuations. Yet, the precise identifications and quantifications of the potential abiotic and biotic factors that shape community structures at a fine scale remains a challenge. Here, we applied null model approaches to assess the importance of habitat filtering and limiting similarity at two spatial scales. We used 63 natural vegetation plots, each measuring 5 × 5 m, with three nested subplots measuring 1 × 1 m, from the 2021 field survey, to examine the alpha diversity as well as beta diversity of plots and subplots. Linear mixed-effects models were employed to determine the impact of environmental variables on assembly rules. Our results demonstrate that habitat filtering is the dominant assembly rules at both the plot and subplot levels, although limiting similarity assumes stronger at the subplot level. Plot-level limiting similarity exhibited a positive association with fine-scale partitioning, suggesting that trait divergence originated from a combination of limiting similarity and spatial partitioning. Our findings also reveal that the community assembly varies more strongly with the mean annual temperature gradient than the mean annual precipitation. This investigation provides a pertinent illustration of non-random assembly rules from spatial scale and environmental factors in plant communities in the loess hilly region. It underscores the critical influence of spatial and environmental constraints in understanding the assembly of plant communities.

Fine-root architecture is critical feature reflecting root explorative and exploitative strategies for soil resources and soil space occupancy. Yet, studies on the variation of fine-root architecture across different species are scare and little work has been done to integrate the potential drivers on these variations along a biogeographical gradient in arid ecosystems. We measured root branching intensity, topological index, and root branching ratios as well as morphological traits (root diameter and length) in dry valley along a 1000 km latitudinal gradient. Influence of phylogeny, environmental factors on fine-root architecture and trade-offs among root traits were evaluated. With increasing latitude, the topological index and second to third root order branching ratio decreased, whereas first-to-second branching ratio increased. Root branching intensity was associated with short and thin fine roots, but has no significant latitudinal pattern. As a whole, soil microbial biomass was the most important driver in the variation of root branching intensity, and soil texture was the strongest predictor of topological index. Additionally, mean annual temperature was an important factor influencing first-to-second branching ratio. Our results suggest variations in fine-root architectures were more dependent on environmental variables than phylogeny, signifying that fine-root architecture is sensitive to environmental variations.

Microorganisms of the soil-root continuum play key roles in ecosystem function. The Loess Plateau is well known for its severe soil erosion and thick loess worldwide, where mean annual precipitation (MAP) and soil nutrients decrease from the southeast to the northwest. However, the relative influence of environmental factors on the microbial community in four microhabitats (bulk soil, rhizosphere, rhizoplane, and endosphere) in the soil-root continuum along the environmental gradient in the Loess Plateau remains unclear. In this study, we investigated 82 field sites from warm-temperate to desert grasslands across the Loess Plateau, China, to assess the bacterial diversity, composition, community assembly, and co-occurrence networks in the soil-root continuum along an environmental gradient using bacterial 16S recombinant DNA amplicon sequencing. We discovered that the microhabitats explained the largest source of variations in the bacterial diversity and community composition in this region. Environmental factors (e.g., MAP, soil organic carbon, and pH) impacted the soil, rhizosphere, and rhizoplane bacterial communities, but their effects on the bacterial community decreased with increased proximity to roots from the soil to the rhizoplane, and the MAP enlarged the dissimilarity of microbial communities from the rhizosphere and rhizoplane to bulk soil. Additionally, stochastic assembly processes drove the endosphere communities, whereas the soil, rhizosphere, and rhizoplane communities were governed primarily by the variable selection of deterministic processes, which showed increased importance from warm-temperate to desert grasslands. Moreover, the properties of the microbial networks in the rhizoplane community indicate more stable networks in desert grasslands, likely conferring the resistance of microbial communities in higher stress environments. Collectively, our results showed that the bacterial communities in the soil-root continuum had different sensitivities and assembly mechanisms along an environmental gradient. These patterns are shaped simultaneously by the intertwined dimensions of proximity to roots and environmental stress change in the Loess Plateau.

Therefore, this work evaluated the richness and composition of fish from streams sampled at different urbanization levels, aiming to determine any direct effects on the structure of fish assemblages. To accomplish this, samples were collected from 2003 to 2011 at 31 sites distributed among 3 microbasins in the Rio Ivinhema Basin, Alto Rio Paraná. Based on environmental variables, physicochemical of the water and analysis of the use and occupation of the soil, the microbasins were classified into different urbanization levels (low, medium and high). A total of 4,320 individuals were sampled, out of which 57 fish species were recorded. Sampled sites with medium urbanization level presented higher richness compared to sampled sites with high urbanization level which presented lower richness. Species richness in these sites was explained mainly by water temperature and water velocity. Results confirmed that urbanization does directly affect environmental integrity, which, in turn, can lead to the homogenization of stream assemblages.


Estudos sobre assembleias de peixes em riachos enfatizam o papel dos filtros ambientais associados ao padrão de colonização das assembleias, por outro lado, quando a assembleia está sujeita aos efeitos antropogênicos, as variáveis ambientais associadas à qualidade ambiental assumem maior importância. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a riqueza e a composição de peixes de riachos amostrados em diferentes níveis de urbanização, buscando evidenciar se o efeito reflete diretamente na estrutura das assembleias. As amostragens foram realizadas em 31 locais distribuídos em três microbacias na bacia Rio Ivinhema, Alto Rio Paraná, no período de 2003 a 2011. Com base nas variáveis ambientais, físico-químicos da água e análise do uso e ocupação do solo as microbacias foram classificadas em diferentes níveis de urbanização (baixo, médio e alto). Foram amostrados um total 4.320 indivíduos, dos quais foram registradas 57 espécies de peixes. Os locais amostrados com influência média da urbanização apresentaram maior riqueza de espécies, entretanto, os locais amostrados com alta influência da urbanização apresentaram menor riqueza de espécies. Dessa forma, constatamos que a urbanização influencia diretamente na integridade ambiental, que pode levar a homogeneização das assembleias de riachos.

Introducción: Los bosques de niebla se caracterizan por su distribución insular en sistemas montañosos tropicales. Florísticamente son complejos y heterogéneos, y con vacíos de información que afectan la comprensión de cómo varía su diversidad y estructura. Objetivo: Analizar los patrones de diversidad, estructura y composición del bosque de niebla en México. Métodos: Contamos y medimos plantas leñosas en 40 parcelas de 0.1 ha de cinco sitios en aproximadamente 200 km a lo largo de la Sierra Madre de Chiapas, México (1 700 - 2 100 m.s.n.m.). Usamos tres métodos estadísticos: análisis de varianza (diversidad verdadera y estructura entre sitios), regresión simple y métodos multivariados (clima y elevación). Resultados: Registramos 4 021 individuos (220 especies, 60 familias). En la diversidad verdadera, solo encontramos diferencias en riqueza de especies, con un ligero incremento hacia la parte central del área. La diversidad fue constante para especies comunes y dominantes. No encontramos diferencias en la densidad de árboles o área basal entre los sitios. Sin embargo, hubo menor densidad y mayor área basal a mayores elevaciones. La diversidad beta y la diferenciación en la composición florística es alta e importante entre las parcelas de un mismo sitio y se incrementa con la distancia entre los sitios. Conclusiones: La diversidad beta y la diferenciación florística contribuyen significativamente en la variación del bosque de niebla. Las variables climáticas y la altitud tienen efectos distintos sobre la diversidad y estructura.


Introduction: Cloud forests are noted for their narrow distribution in tropical mountain systems. Floristically, they are complex and heterogeneous, with gaps in information that hinder the understanding of how their diversity and structure vary. Objective: To analyze patterns of diversity, structure, and composition of the cloud forest in Mexico. Methods: We counted and measured woody plants in forty 0.1 ha plots from five sites in approximately 200 km along the Sierra Madre of Chiapas, Mexico (1 700 - 2 100 m.a.s.l.). We used three statistical methods: analysis of variance (diversity true and structure among sites), simple regression and multivariate statistics (climate and elevation). Results: We recorded 4 021 individuals (220 species, 60 families). In true diversity, we only found differences for species richness, with a slight increase toward the central part of the area. Diversity was constant for common and dominant species. We found no differences in tree density or basal area between sites. However, there was less density and more basal area at higher elevations. Beta diversity and differentiation in floristic composition are high and important between plots of the same site, and they increase with distance between sites. Conclusions: Beta diversity and floristic differentiation significantly contribute to variation in the cloud forest. Climatic variables and altitude have different effects on diversity and structure.

The Distance-based redundancy analysis ordination showed two main groups: the first clustered the Bizerte sites, which were characterized by high water conductivity, sodium concentration and salinity. The second main group comprised sites from the Tell zone and was characterized by low temperatures, neutral pH, low conductivity and nutrients content. The subfamily TANYPODIINAE (e.g., Prochladius sp., Prochladius choerus (Meigen, 1804) and Macropelopia sp.) was the dominant group at Tell zone, whereas species such as Diamesa starmachi (Kownacki et Kownacha, 1970) and Potthastia gaedii (Meigen, 1838) were found only in Tell Wadis. In contrast, chironomid species such as Diamesa starmachi (Kownacki et Kownacha, 1970), Potthastia gaedii (Meigen, 1838), Procladius choreus (Meigen, 1804) were specific for Tell Mountain. Cap Bon wadis region was dominated by genus Cladotanytarsus sp. Esses sistemas de água doce têm características muito particulares como resultado de sua forte irregularidade de fluxo devido ao regime de escoamento de precipitação limitado, levando a fortes flutuações hidrológicas sazonais. O estudo atual enfocou a distribuição espaço-temporal dos quironomídeos em 28 locais de amostragem espalhados pelo norte da Tunísia. Ao aplicar PERMANOVA, os resultados indicaram uma variação espaço-temporal significativa ao longo de vários gradientes ambientais. Os principais fatores abióticos responsáveis pelas diferenças observadas na distribuição espacial dos quironomídeos no wadi foram a condutividade e a temperatura, seguidos de perto por altitude, pH, salinidade, declive do talvegue e oxigênio dissolvido, identificados como tais empregando o procedimento de modelos lineares baseados na distância. A ordenação da análise de redundância baseada em distância mostrou dois grupos principais: o primeiro agrupou os sítios Bizerte, que foram caracterizados por alta condutividade da água, concentração de sódio e salinidade. Abstract Background: Buffalo breeding has significantly increased in Brazil over recent years. However, few genetic evaluations have been conducted. Objective: To assess Genotype x Environment Interactions in the Mediterranean Water Buffalo in Brazil, for weight at 205 days of age, using reaction norm models via random regression. Methods: Data for buffaloes born between 1990 and 2014 were collected from five farms ascribed to the Brazilian Buffaloe Improvement Program, located in the North (1), Northeast (1), South (2) and Southeast (1) regions of Brazil. The initial database consisted of 5,280 observations at 205 days of age (W205). We assessed fit using two hierarchical reaction norm models: a two-step (HRNM2s) and a one-step (HRNM1s). Model fit was estimated using the Deviance Information Criterion, Deviance Based on Bayes Factors and Deviance based on Conditional Predictive Ordinate. The environmental descriptors were created to group individuals into common production environments based on year, season, herd and sex. Results: The best fit was obtained for the hierarchical reaction norm model with one-step (HRNM1s). Direct heritability estimates for this model ranged from 0.17 to 0.67 and the maternal heritability from 0.02 to 0.11 with increasing environmental gradient. Lower correlations among the sire classifications were obtained in comparison with HRNM1s in environments with low and high management, confirming the presence of genotype x environment interactions. Conclusion: We recommend a wider application of genetic evaluation in buffalo aimed at identifying optimal genotypes within specific environments.


Resumen Antecedentes: La cría de búfalos ha aumentado significativamente en Brasil en los últimos años. Sin embargo, se han realizado escasas evaluaciones genéticas. Objetivo: Evaluar las interacciones genotipo x ambiente en búfalos de agua Mediterráneos criados en Brasil, para peso a los 205 días de edad, utilizando modelos de reacción mediante regresión aleatoria. Métodos: Los datos de búfalos nacidos entre 1990 y 2014 se obtuvieron de cinco granjas situadas en el Norte (1), Nordeste (1), Sur (2) y del Sureste (1) de Brasil. Todas estas haciendas participan en el Programa Brasileño de Mejoramiento de Búfalos. Nuestra base de datos inicial consistió de 5.280 observaciones a los 205 días de edad (P205). Evaluamos el ajuste utilizando dos modelos de norma de reacción jerárquica: de dos pasos (HRNM2s) y un paso (HRNM1s). El ajuste del modelo se estimó usando el Criterio de información de la desviación, desviación basado en los factores de bayes y desviación basado en la ordenación predictiva condicional. Los descriptores ambientales fueron creados para agrupar individuos en ambientes de producción comunes basados en año, estación, rebaño y sexo. Resultados: El mejor ajuste se obtuvo para el modelo de norma de reacción jerárquica con un paso (HRNM1s). Las estimaciones de heredabilidad directa para este modelo variaron de 0,17 a 0,67 y la heredabilidad materna de 0,02 a 0,11 con gradiente ambiental creciente. Las correlaciones más bajas entre las clasificaciones de los reproductores se obtuvieron en comparación con las HRNM1s, en ambientes con bajo y alto manejo, confirmando la presencia de interacciones genotipo x ambiente. Conclusiones: Recomendamos la aplicación amplia de la evaluación genética en búfalos para identificar genotipos óptimos en ambientes específicos.

El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer la composición y estructura de la comunidad de coleópteros acuáticos en diferentes quebradas a lo largo de un amplio gradiente altitudinal (476-4411 m de altitud) en Cusco, Perú. Para ello, se establecieron 12 estaciones de muestreo y se realizaron dos colectas durante los meses de mayo y julio-agosto del 2013 (época seca), en la zona de rápidos y sustrato pedregoso. Fueron colectados 3069 individuos entre larvas y adultos de coleópteros acuáticos, pertenecientes a 23 géneros, agrupados en 10 familias. Elmidae presentó la mayor riqueza (13 géneros) y abundancia (90.4 %), distribuyéndose a lo largo de todo el gradiente. Los géneros más representativos por abundancia fueron: Austrelmis, Neoelmis, Heterelmis y Anchytarsus. Las pruebas estadísticas no paramétricas Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney y Kruskall-Wallis para la riqueza, abundancia y estructura comunitaria, así como, el análisis de agrupamiento (CLUSTER) y el análisis de similitud (ANOSIM) mostraron diferencias significativas en la composición de la comunidad de coleópteros acuáticos a lo largo del gradiente estudiado. El análisis de similitud porcentual (SIMPER) permitió identificar los géneros que más influyeron en la estructura comunitaria, destacando Neoelmis y Heterelmis en estaciones ubicadas a baja y media altitud, y Austrelmis en estaciones de mayor altitud. Se evidenció una correlación positiva de la temperatura con la riqueza, diversidad y equidad, y una correlación negativa de la altitud con estas mismas variables.


The aim of this paper was to know the composition and structure of water beetles community in different streams along a wide altitudinal gradient (476-4411 m altitude) in Cusco, Peru. For that, 12 sampling stations were established and two collects were carried out during May and July-August 2013 (dry season), in the running water and stony substrate. A total of 3069 individuals were collected between larvae and adults of aquatic beetles, belonging to 23 genera, grouped into 10 families. Elmidae presented the highest richness (13 genera) and abundance (90.4%), being distributed along the whole gradient. The most representative genera by abundance were: Austrelmis, Neoelmis, Heterelmis and Anchytarsus. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis non-parametric statistical tests for richness, abundance and community structure, clustering analysis (CLUSTER) and similarity analysis (ANOSIM) showed significant differences in the composition of the beetles community along the gradient studied. The percentage similarity analysis (SIMPER) allowed to identify the genera that most influenced the community structure, stand out Neoelmis and Heterelmis in stations located at low and medium altitude, and Austrelmis in stations of higher altitude. A positive correlation of temperature with the richness, diversity and equity, and a negative correlation with these variables altitude was evident.

Abstract Here we examine assemblage structure of coprophagous Scarabaeidae (dung beetles) in the Pantanal of the state of Mato Grosso with respect to flooding regimes, soil texture, leaf litter volume and tree dominance in native and exotic pastures. Samples were collected along 30 transects of 250 m in length in a 5×5 km grid (25 km2). Five pitfalls baited with human feces were placed in each transect. A total of 1692 individuals in 19 species were captured, the majority in the subfamily Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae. Assemblages were influenced by the duration of flooding and leaf litter volume. None of the other habitat variables was correlated with species richness. Cultivated pastures with exotic grasses were unimportant for composition of the assemblages of beetles. These results indicate that duration of flooding is the most important regulating force in this community.


Resumo Esse estudo avaliou a estrutura espacial de assembleias de Scarabaeidae coprófagos no Pantanal de Mato Grosso, em função do tempo de inundação, textura do solo, volume da serapilheira, dominância de arbóreas, pastagens nativa e exótica. As coletas foram realizadas em 30 transectos de 250 m cada distribuídos sistematicamente em uma área de 25 km2. Cinco armadilhas pitfall iscadas com fezes humanas foram instaladas em cada transecto, e obtidos 1.692 indivíduos distribuídos em 19 espécies pertencentes às subfamílias Scarabaeinae e Aphodiinae. A estrutura e composição das assembleias foram afetadas pelo tempo de inundação e o volume da serapilheira. Todas as variáveis explanatórias foram fracamente correlacionadas e de forma não significativa com a riqueza de espécies. A existência de pastagem exótica não afetou a composição das assembleias de besouros. Esses resultados indicam que o tempo de inundação é a principal força reguladora dessa comunidade no ambiente pantaneiro.
