RESUMEN

Litter decomposition by microorganisms and animals is influenced by climate and has been found to be higher in warm and wet than in cold and dry biomes. We, however, hypothesized that the macrofaunal effect on decomposition should increase with temperature and aridity since larger animals are more tolerant to aridity than smaller organisms. This hypothesis was supported by our global analysis of macrofauna exclusion studies. Macrofauna increased litter mass loss on average by 40%, twofold higher than the highest previous estimation of macrofaunal effect on decomposition. The strongest effect was found in subtropical deserts where faunal decomposition had not been considered important. Our results highlight the need to consider animal size when exploring climate dependence of faunal decomposition, and the disproportionately large role of macrofauna in regulating litter decomposition in warm drylands. This new realization is critical for understanding element cycling in the face of global warming and aridification.

The breakdown of plant material fuels soil functioning and biodiversity. Currently, process understanding of global decomposition patterns and the drivers of such patterns are hampered by the lack of coherent large-scale datasets. We buried 36,000 individual litterbags (tea bags) worldwide and found an overall negative correlation between initial mass-loss rates and stabilization factors of plant-derived carbon, using the Tea Bag Index (TBI). The stabilization factor quantifies the degree to which easy-to-degrade components accumulate during early-stage decomposition (e.g. by environmental limitations). However, agriculture and an interaction between moisture and temperature led to a decoupling between initial mass-loss rates and stabilization, notably in colder locations. Using TBI improved mass-loss estimates of natural litter compared to models that ignored stabilization. Ignoring the transformation of dead plant material to more recalcitrant substances during early-stage decomposition, and the environmental control of this transformation, could overestimate carbon losses during early decomposition in carbon cycle models.

This study investigated (a) differences between males and females for changes in serum, tear, and urine osmolality, hematocrit, and urine specific gravity following acute passive dehydration and (b) assessed the reliability of these biomarkers separately for each sex. Fifteen males (age: 26.3 ± 3.5 years, body mass: 76 ± 7 kg) and 15 females (age: 28.8 ± 6.4 years, body mass: 63 ± 7 kg) completed a sauna protocol twice (5-28 days apart), aiming for 4% body mass loss (BML). Urine, blood, and tear markers were collected pre- and postdehydration, and change scores were calculated. Male BML was significantly greater than that of females in Trial 1 (3.53% ± 0.55% vs. 2.53% ± 0.43%, p < .001) and Trial 2 (3.36% ± 0.66% vs. 2.53% ± 0.44%, p = .01). Despite significant differences in BML, change in hematocrit was the only change marker that displayed a significant difference in Trial 1 (males: 3% ± 1%, females: 2% ± 1%, p = .004) and Trial 2 (males: 3% ± 1%, females: 1% ± 1%, p = .008). Regression analysis showed a significant effect for sex (male) predicting change in hematocrit (ß = 0.8, p = .032) and change in serum osmolality (ß = -3.3, p = .005) when controlling for BML but not for urinary or tear measures. The intraclass correlation coefficients for females (ICC 2, 1) were highest for change in urine specific gravity (ICC = .62, p = .006) and lowest for change in tear osmolarity (ICC = -.14, p = .689), whereas for males, it was posthematocrit (ICC = .65, p = .003) and post tear osmolarity (ICC = .18, p = .256). Generally, biomarkers showed lower test-retest reliability in males compared with females but, overall, were classified as poor-moderate in both sexes. These findings suggest that the response and reliability of hydration biomarkers are sex specific and highlight the importance of accounting for BML differences.

Background: The Serum creatinine/cystatin C ratio (Cr/CysC ratio) is an emerging alternative index for muscle mass loss, a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, the association between the Cr/CysC ratio and CVD morbidity and mortality remains unknown. Methods: A total of 11,150 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this study. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were employed to assess the association between the Cr/CysC ratio and self-reported CVD morbidity. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the Cr/CysC ratio for CVD mortality. Results: At baseline, 1181 (7.90%) participants had self-reported CVDs. Lower Cr/CysC ratios were found in participants with CVDs (1.18 ± 0.30 vs. 1.05 ± 0.23, p < 0.001). In the multivariable logistic regression model, the Cr/CysC ratio was inversely linked to CVD morbidity (odds ratio: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.52-0.81, p < 0.001, per standard deviation [SD] increase). 997 (8.94%) CVD deaths were documented during a median follow-up of 16.9 years. A higher Cr/CysC ratio was associated with a decreasing risk of CVD mortality (adjusted HR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.46-0.65, p < 0.001, per SD increase). Conclusions: In NHANES participants, the Cr/CysC ratio had an inverse correlation with CVD morbidity and mortality.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The early identification of undernourished patients with CKD could help instating appropriate nutritional intervention before the full development of the threatening condition known as Protein Energy Wasting (PEW). Handgrip strength (HGS) and blood hemoglobin (Hb) concentration are two parameters considered representative of nutritional status but not included among the criteria for PEW diagnosis. In the present work we investigated whether they could help identifying CKD patients at risk of undernutrition. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a two-step cluster analysis to classify a cohort of 71 stage 3-5 CKD patients, none of which with PEW, according to their Hb concentration and dominant-hand HGS. Two clusters were finely separated using this method. When we compared the two groups for main body composition and nutritional variables by using t-test statistics or Mann-Whitney test, as appropriate, we found significant differences in PhA, ECW/TBW, ASMI, serum iron. Then we stratified our population by gender and performed cluster analysis as well. PhA, ECW/TBW were still significantly different in the two clusters both in M and in F, while serum iron concentration only in males and ASMI only in females. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that either in male than in female Hb concentration and HGS may distinguish two subgroups of CKD patients with different nutritional status and disease severity. Patient belonging to either of these cluster can be easily identified by using the HGS/Hb ratio which represents the HGS normalized per gr Hb.

This article describes survivorship and explores factors affecting mortality risks in a captive colony of coppery titi monkeys (Plecturocebus cupreus) housed at the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC), at UC Davis, in Davis, CA. We analyzed data collected on individuals since the colony's creation in the 1960s, with a sample of 600 animals with partially complete information (date of birth, age at death, body mass, parental lineage). We used three methods: (1) Kaplan-Meier regressions followed by a log-rank test to compare survival in male and female titi monkeys, (2) a breakpoint analysis to identify shifts in the survival curves, and (3) Cox regressions to test the effect of body mass change, parental pair tenure, and parental age on mortality risk. We found that males tend to have a longer median lifespan than females (14.9 and 11.4 years; p = 0.094) and that survival decreases earlier in males than in females during adulthood (9.8 and 16.2 years). A body mass loss of 10% from adulthood to the time of death led to a 26% higher risk of dying (p < 0.001) as compared to an individual with stable body mass. We found no evidence of sociobiological factors on mortality risks (parental age, parental pair tenure), but an exploratory analysis suggested that a higher rate of offspring conceptions increases mortality risks. This description of factors influencing survival and mortality in titi monkeys is a first step toward understanding aging in this species to consider titi monkeys as a primate model for socioemotional aging.

AIMS: The concomitant increase in skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and decrease in fat mass has been termed body recomposition. This study aimed to analyze the influence of pre-training levels of fat mass on body recomposition, muscular strength, and (phase angle) PhA after 24 weeks of resistance training (RT) in older women. METHODS: Data from 99 older women (68.6 ± 5.7 years, 65.7 ± 8.6 kg, 155.1 ± 5.8 cm, 27.2 ± 3.1 kg/m2) was retrospectively analyzed. Participants were separated into tertiles according to the amount of fat mass at baseline as follows: low fat mass (L-FM, n = 33), moderate fat mass (M-FM, n = 33), and high fat mass (H-FM, n = 33). The participants underwent a RT program consisting of eight exercises, three sets per exercise, with a load between 8 and 15 RM, performed three times per week for 24 weeks. The SMM and fat mass were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Body recomposition was determined by the composite Z-score of changes in SMM and fat mass. One repetition maximum (1RM) tests in chest press, knee extension, and preacher curl were assessed to verify muscular strength. Bioimpedance was used to determine phase angle. RESULTS: Results indicated that after the RT period, a greater positive body recomposition was observed in the L-FM group than in M-FM and H-FM groups. Moreover, all groups increased muscular strength and phase angle with no significant difference among groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The present study results suggest that the initial amount of fat mass influences the body recomposition induced by RT in older women, with those with lower pre-training fat mass levels presenting higher levels of body recomposition. However, improvements in muscular strength and phase angle are not dependent on the amount of initial fat mass in older women.

Serum phosphate concentration is regulated by renal phosphate reabsorption and mediated by sodium-phosphate cotransporters. Germline mutations in genes encoding these cotransporters have been associated with clinical phenotypes, variably characterized by hyperphosphaturia, hypophosphatemia, recurrent kidney stones, skeletal demineralization, and early onset osteoporosis. We reported a 33-year-old male patient presenting a history of recurrent nephrolithiasis and early onset osteopenia in the lumbar spine and femur. He was tested, through next generation sequencing (NGS), by using a customized multigenic panel containing 33 genes, whose mutations are known to be responsible for the development of congenital parathyroid diseases. Two further genes, SLC34A1 and SLC34A3, encoding two sodium-phosphate cotransporters, were additionally tested. A novel germline heterozygous mutation was identified in the SLC34A1 gene, c.1627G>T (p.Gly543Cys), currently not reported in databases of human gene mutations and scientific literature. SLC34A1 germline heterozygous mutations have been associated with the autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic nephrolithiasis/osteoporosis type 1 (NPHLOP1). Consistently, alongside the clinical features of NPHLOP1, our patient experienced recurrent nephrolithiasis and lumbar and femoral osteopenia at a young age. Genetic screening for the p.Gly453Cys variant and the clinical characterization of his first-degree relatives associated the presence of the variant in one younger brother, presenting renal colic and microlithiasis, suggesting p.Gly453Cys is possibly associated with renal altered function in the NPHLOP1 phenotype.

Phosphorylated cellulose can be an intrinsic flame retardant and a promising alternative for halogenated fire inhibitors. In this study, the mixture of di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP) and urea (U), containing phosphate and nitrogen groups, was applied to attain fire inhibitor properties. Functional groups of cellulose were grafted with phosphorous by keeping the constant molar ratio of 1/1.2/4.9 between anhydroglucose units of cellulose/DAP/U in different concentrations of bleached kraft pulp. Phosphorus concentrations were determined using the ICP hrOES method, and paper sheets were made using the Rapid Köthen apparatus. The tensile strength of phosphorylated cellulose increased twice compared with unmodified cellulose when the phosphorous concentration increased to 10,000 g/kg. An increase in the tensile index comes from the higher freeness of pulp and cross-linking of the phosphorous group between cellulose fibers. Remarkable fire retardancy effects were achieved in cellulose concentrations above 5 wt%. The raised phosphorous concentration above 10,000 g/kg due to the phosphorylation process caused the formation of a char layer on a cellulose surface and the nonflammable gas emission. That effect was indirectly confirmed by reducing the combustion temperature and HRR by 50 and 45%, respectively. Due to increasing phosphorus concentration in cellulose sheets, cellulose's fire and strength properties increased significantly.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between physical activity and muscle mass loss among Chinese elderly aged 60 years and above in 15 provinces. METHODS: Data was collected from 2015 China Nutritional Transition Cohort Study. Information on demographic characteristics and physical activity was investigated by questionnaire. Dietary intake was estimated from three consecutive 24-h recalls for each individual. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass(ASM) was assessed using the bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA). Skeletal muscle mass(SMI) loss was diagnosed according Asian working group of sarcopenia(AWGS) 2019 recommendation(male: SMI <7.0 kg/m~2, female: <5.7 kg/m~2). A total of 4565 participants aged 60 years and above from 15 provinces in China with complete information were included in the final analysis. Different domains(occupational, domestic, travel and leisure), light physical activity(<3.0 METs), moderate physical activity(3.0-5.9 METs) and vigorous physical activity(≥6.0 METs) of physical activity among elderly adults were evaluated. Logistic multilevel model was used to analyze the relationship between low muscle mass and different intensity of physical activity duration. RESULTS: Among all participants aged 60 years and above in 15 provinces of China in 2015, women's participation rate in domestic physical activity was 91.7%, which was higher than men's rate of 62.3%. However, men's participation rate in occupational, travel and leisure physical activity were higher than those of women. The participation rate, duration of light physical activity and moderate physical activity were higher in women than in men(light physical activity: female duration 11.0 h/week vs. male duration 3.5 h/week; female participation rate 89.9% vs. male participation rate 62.8%; moderate physical activity: female duration 7.0 h/week vs. male duration 4.7 h/week; female participation rate 90.6% vs. male participation rate 75.2%). The median vigorous physical activity was 0 h/week in both male and female group. The prevalence of muscle mass loss was 13.9% among subjects. The median weekly light physical activity and moderate physical activity in muscle mass loss group were 5.8 h and 4.7 h, which were lower than in non-muscle mass loss group(9.3 h and 6.0 h). The OR of muscle mass lass was 0.71(95%CI 0.42-0.98, P<0.05) for the male with 3.5-6.9 hours of moderate physical activity per week, compared to moderate physical activity less than 3.5 h/week. And OR of the female was 0.67(95%CI 0.47-0.95, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The vast majority of physical activity in China among the elderly is domestic and light physical activity. Light physical activity and moderate physical activity duration increments in female and moderate physical activity duration increments in male were associated with decreased risk of muscle mass loss.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Decomposition is a major ecosystem process which improves soil quality. Despite that, only a few studies have analysed decomposition in an agricultural context, while most agrosystems (e.g. vineyards) are facing decreasing soil quality. The objective of this study is to understand the impacts of both pedoclimate and weed management on the mass loss of vineyard weed communities during the early stages of the decomposition process through their functional properties. METHODS: In 16 Mediterranean vineyards representing both a pedoclimate and a soil management gradient, we measured the mass loss of green above-ground biomass of 50 weed communities during decomposition in standard conditions and key leaf traits of dominant species [e.g. leaf dry matter content (LDMC) and leaf lignin to nitrogen ratio (lignin:N)]. Both the mean [i.e. community-weighted mean (CWM)] and diversity (i.e. Rao index) were computed at the community level. Path analysis was used to quantify the effects of agro-environmental filters on the mass loss of weed communities through their functional properties. KEY RESULTS: Tillage and mowing filtered more decomposable communities than chemical weeding (16 and 8 % of higher mass loss after 2 months of decomposition). Path analysis selected weed management practice type as the main factor determining mass loss through its effect on functional properties, while soil and climate had minor and no effects, respectively. Chemical weeding favoured communities with higher investment in resistant leaves (e.g. 38 % higher lignin:N, 22 % lower leaf nitrogen content) which resulted in lower mass loss compared with tilled and mowed communities. Mowing favoured communities with 47 % higher biomass and with 46 % higher nitrogen content. CONCLUSIONS: Weed management significantly influenced weed mass loss, while the pedoclimate had little effect. Our results suggest that mowing is a promising alternative to herbicide use, favouring higher biomass, nitrogen content and decomposability potential of weeds.

In recent decades, Greenland's peripheral glaciers have experienced large-scale mass loss, resulting in a substantial contribution to sea level rise. While their total area of Greenland ice cover is relatively small (4%), their mass loss is disproportionally large compared to the Greenland ice sheet. Satellite altimetry from Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and ICESat-2 shows that mass loss from Greenland's peripheral glaciers increased from 27.2 ± 6.2 Gt/yr (February 2003-October 2009) to 42.3 ± 6.2 Gt/yr (October 2018-December 2021). These relatively small glaciers now constitute 11 ± 2% of Greenland's ice loss and contribute to global sea level rise. In the period October 2018-December 2021, mass loss increased by a factor of four for peripheral glaciers in North Greenland. While peripheral glacier mass loss is widespread, we also observe a complex regional pattern where increases in precipitation at high altitudes have partially counteracted increases in melt at low altitude.

BACKGROUND: Body weight changes occur frequently during advanced stages of Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 2 (SCA2), nevertheless limited information exists on biomarkers of nutritional status of these patients. OBJECTIVE.: To assess changes in surrogate nutritional markers of SCA2 patients; to explore their associations with expanded CAG repeats and disease severity. METHODS: One-hundred-thirteen SCA2 patients and 50 healthy controls underwent a comprehensive anthropometrical and biochemical assessment protocol of the nutritional status. Neurological and genotype assessments were also performed. RESULTS: A decrease in weight, body mass index (BMI), cutaneous skinfold thickness, fat mass, arm muscle circumference, calf circumference and skeletal muscle mass was observed in SCA2 patients compared to the controls. The total/HDL cholesterol ratio was significantly reduced in patients. BMI was correlated with the age at onset. Overall, anthropometric measures were correlated with clinical markers of disease severity and were more evident in severe and moderate cases. CONCLUSIONS: Using anthropometric measures in the assessment of the nutritional status of SCA2 patients might provide hints about pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie metabolic abnormalities in SCA2. Anthropometric are close related with disease severity and progression, and trigger preventive therapies aimed to ameliorate weight loss and wasting in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) and malnutrition, are common health problems in elderly hypertensive patients. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between malnutrition and OH in elderly hypertensive patients. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional single-center study. All participants underwent a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), in which malnutrition was defined according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria based on four different methods of diagnosing muscle mass loss. Furthermore, the accuracy of these methods was verified by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for OH in elderly hypertensive patients. RESULTS: For GLIM criteria, when Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) was the gold standard for muscle mass loss, the Area Under ROC Curve (AUC) values for Upper Arm Circumference (UAC), Calf Circumference (CC), and Hand Grip Strength (HGS) were 0.784, 0.805, and 0.832, with moderate accuracy in diagnosing malnutrition. Multivariate analysis showed that females, Diabetes Mellitus (DM), diuretics, and malnutrition diagnosed by GLIM-UAC were risk factors for OH in elderly hypertensive patients. CONCLUSION: Prompt detection of malnutrition in the elderly and attention to changes in UAC may be critical. Similarly, we should strengthen medication and disease management in elderly hypertensive patients.

Polylactic acid (PLA) as a "green," renewable corn-soy based polymer resin was assessed as a novel solid-state detector for rapid-turnaround gamma radiation dosimetry in the 1-100 kGy range-of significant interest in biomedical and general nuclear industry applications. Co-60 was used as the source of gamma photons. It was found that PLA resin responds well in terms of rheology and porosity metrics with an absorbed gamma dose (Dg). In this work, rheological changes were ascertained via measuring the differential mass loss ratio (MLR) of irradiated PLA placed within PTFE-framed (40 mm × 20 mm × 0.77 mm) cavities bearing ~0.9 g of PLA resin and pressed for 12-16 min in a controlled force hot press under ~6.6 kN loading and platens heated to 227 °C for the low Dg range: 0-11 kGy; and to 193 °C for the extended Dg range: 11-120 kGy. MLR varied quadratically from 0.05 to ~0.2 (1σ ~ 0.007) in the 0-11 kGy experiments, and from 0.05 to ~0.5 (1σ ~0.01) in the 0-120 kGy experiments. Rheological changes from gamma irradiation were modeled and simultaneously correlated with void-pocket formations, which increase with Dg. A single PLA resin bead (~0.04 g) was compressed 5 min at 216 °C in 0-16 kGy experiments, and compressed 2 min at 232 °C in the 16-110 kGy experiments, to form sturdy ~100 µm thick wafers in the same press. Aggregate coupon porosity was then readily measurable with conventional optical microscope imaging and analyzed with standard image processing; this provided complementary data to MLR. Average porosity vs. dose varied quadratically from ~0 to ~15% in the 0-16 kGy range and from ~0 to ~18% over the 16-114 kGy range. These results provide evidence for utilizing "green"/renewable (under $0.01) PLA resin beads for rapid and accurate (+/-5-10%) gamma dosimetry over a wide 0-120 kGy range, using simple to deploy mass and void measuring techniques using common laboratory equipment.

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition is a frequently diagnosed condition in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients after radiation therapy (RTH). Malnutrition causes adipose tissue dysfunction associated with intensified lipolysis and disruption of the activity of mechanisms that protect adipose tissue against this process, which include the protective function of perilipin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the predictive value of 13041A>G PLIN1 polymorphism in the development of malnutrition related to adipose tissue loss in a group of 80 patients with locally advanced HNC treated by means of radical radiation therapy. RESULTS: After the completion of RTH, men with AA genotype had significantly lower fat mass (FM compared to men with G haplotype; FM: 13.84 ± 6.36 kg and 19.06 ± 6.30 kg (p = 0.009). In consequence of RTH, the AA genotype carriers lost an average of 37.01% adipose tissue mass and patients with GA and GG genotypes lost 12.82 and 0.31% (p = 0.035), respectively. AA genotype was also associated with higher chance of ≥ 10%, ≥ 20% and ≥ 30% FM loss in the course of RTH (OR = 13.78; 5.78; 2.28). CONCLUSIONS: The evaluation of such molecular factors as SNP 13041A>G may have higher predictive value in the development of malnutrition associated with severe loss of fat mass than the subjective scales, e.g., SGA and NRS-2002. The presence of AA genotype on men with HNC before RTH may facilitate earlier nutritional intervention and supportive treatment aimed at limiting or preventing body mass and fat mass loss during the applied treatment.

BACKGROUND: Although muscle mass loss and pneumonia are common and crucial issues in hemodialysis (HD) patients, few reports have focused on their association, which remains unclear. This study assessed the association between skeletal muscle mass and the incidence of pneumonia in HD patients using the psoas muscle index (PMI). METHODS: This retrospective study included 330 patients on HD who were treated at a single center between July 2011 and June 2012. The observation period was between July 2011 and June 2021. Demographic, clinical, and HD data were collected, and the associations between PMI and hospitalization due to bacterial pneumonia were evaluated using Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for patients' background data. Additionally, the correlation between patient characteristics and PMI was evaluated using multivariable linear regression. RESULTS: Among 330 patients (mean age, 67.3 ± 13.3; 56.7% male; median dialysis vintage 58 months, (interquartile range [IQR] 23-124), 79 were hospitalized for pneumonia during the observation period (median observation period was 4.5 years [IQR 2.0-9.1]). The multivariable Cox proportional analysis, which was adjusted for age, sex, dialysis vintage, diabetes mellitus, and stroke history and considered death as a competing risk, indicated that decreased PMI/(standard deviation) was closely associated with the development of pneumonia (hazard ratio: 0.67, 95% confidence interval: 0.47-0.95, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Skeletal muscle mass was associated with the development of pneumonia in patients on HD and could be a useful marker for the risk of pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Aim of this study was to assess changes in cardiac morphometric parameters at different stages of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) using a monocrotaline-induced rat model. METHODS: Four groups were distinguished: I-control, non-PAH (n = 18); II-early PAH (n = 12); III-end-stage PAH (n = 23); and IV-end-stage PAH with myocarditis (n = 7). RESULTS: Performed over the course of PAH in vivo echocardiography showed significant thickening of the right ventricle free wall (end-diastolic dimension), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion reduction and decrease in pulmonary artery acceleration time normalized to cycle length. No differences in end-diastolic left ventricle free wall thickness measured in echocardiography was observed between groups. Significant increase of right ventricle and decrease of left ventricle systolic pressure was observed over the development of PAH. Thickening and weight increase (241.2% increase) of the right ventricle free wall and significant dilatation of the right ventricle was observed over the course of PAH (p < 0.001). Reduction in the left ventricle free wall thickness was also observed in end-stage PAH (p < 0.001). Significant trend in the left ventricle free wall weight decrease was observed over the course of PAH (p < 0.001, 24.3% reduction). Calculated right/left ventricle free wall weight ratio gradually increased over PAH stages (p < 0.001). The reduction of left ventricle diameter was observed in rats with end-stage PAH both with and without myocarditis (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: PAH leads to multidimensional changes in morphometric cardiac parameters. Right ventricle morphological and functional failure develop gradually from early stage of PAH, while left ventricle changes develop at the end stages of PAH.

Reproductive hormones have significant nonreproductive physiological effects, including altering fluid regulation. Our purpose was to explore the impact of sex and menstrual cycle (MC) phase on volume-regulatory responses to 24-h fluid restriction (24-h FR). Participants (men: n = 12, 20 ± 2 yr; women: n = 10, 20 ± 1 yr) were assigned two randomized and counterbalanced fluid prescriptions [Euhy: euhydrated, urine specific gravity (USG) < 1.020; Dehy: 24-h FR, USG > 1.020]. Men completed both (MEuhy, MDehy), while women completed both in the late-follicular (days 10-13; FDehy, FEuhy) and midluteal (days 18-22; LDehy, LEuhy) phases. We measured body mass, plasma and urine osmolality (Posm, Uosm), urine specific gravity (USG), urine color (Ucol), and serum copeptin; 24-h FR yielded mild dehydration without influence of sex or MC (P > 0.05). Copeptin increased in men following Dehy (pre: 8.2 ± 5.2, post: 15.8 ± 12.6, P = 0.04) but not in women (FDehy pre: 4.3 ± 1.6, post: 10.5 ± 6.9, P = 0.06; LDehy pre: 5.6 ± 3.5, post: 10.4 ± 6.2, P = 0.16). In FDehy, Posm increased following FR (pre: 288 ± 2, post: 292 ± 1, P = 0.03) but not in men (pre: 292 ± 3, post: 293 ± 2, P = 0.46). No MC differences were observed between body mass loss, Posm, Uosm, USG, and copeptin (P > 0.05). These results suggest that volume-regulatory responses to 24-h FR were present in men but not in women, without apparent effects of the menstrual cycle.

Mass regulation in birds is well documented. For example, birds can increase body mass in response to lower availability and/or predictability of food and decrease body mass in response to increased predation danger. Birds also demonstrate an ability to maintain body mass across a range of food qualities. Although the adaptive significance of mass regulation has received a great deal of theoretical and empirical attention, the mechanisms by which birds achieve this have not. Several non-exclusive mechanisms could facilitate mass regulation in birds. Birds could regulate body mass by adjusting food intake (dieting), activity, baseline energetic requirements (basal metabolic rate), mitochondrial efficiency or assimilation efficiency. Here, we present the results of two experiments in captive red knots (Calidris canutus islandica) that assess three of these proposed mechanisms: dieting, activity and up- and down-regulation of metabolic rate. In the first experiment, knots were exposed to cues of predation risk that led them to exhibit presumably adaptive mass loss. In the second experiment, knots maintained constant body mass despite being fed alternating high- and low-quality diets. In both experiments, regulation of body mass was achieved through a combination of changes in food intake and activity. Both experiments also provide some evidence for a role of metabolic adjustments. Taken together, these two experiments demonstrate that fine-scale management of body mass in knots is achieved through multiple mechanisms acting simultaneously.
