RESUMEN

The objective of this study is geochronological investigation of sedimentological and inorganic composition, in the Danube Djerdap Lake sediments in order to obtain reliable information about former pollution. Eleven samples were taken from the 135-cm-deep sediment core drilled at the Orlova location. Since the core represents sediments deposited during 1972-2016, the sedimentation rate of ~ 3 cm year-1 was estimated. Grain size, mineralogical and geochemical composition was determined. Sediments are sandy silts and clayey silts, and only the deepest and shallowest layers contain > 30% of sand-size fraction. The highest concentrations of minor elements are found in the oldest sediment (1972-1977) as a consequence of the high flux of the material from variable sources. During the sedimentation period (1975-1990), the concentrations of analyzed elements are generally decreasing until the beginning of 1990s. After this period, there are two distinct decreases and two distinct increases in concentrations of elements. The fluctuations in minor element concentrations are a consequence of both natural and anthropogenic sources. Granitic rocks situated south are source of minerals that carry minor elements. Enrichment Factor, Geoaccumulation Index, Contamination Factor and Pollution Load Index indicate that concentrations of certain minor elements at specific depositional periods have anthropogenic source.

RESUMEN

The biological activity of an oil not only depends on its fatty acid composition but also the lipid composition and trace components. In this paper, to select the optimal mushroom oil, the component compositions (fatty acids, lipids, polyphenols, flavones, tocopherols, and unsaponifiable matters) and antioxidant activities in vitro of four mushroom oils (Agrocybe cylindracea, two Lentinula edodes, and Volvariella volvacea) were investigated and compared. The results showed that the four tested oils had the same fatty acid composition in different amounts, but the lipid component, minor components, and free radical scavenging activity in the tested oils varied widely depending on the type of mushroom. Overall, Volvariella volvacea oil was considered superior to the other three tested oils, as it had the largest contents of polar lipids, diglycerides, polyunsaturated fatty acids (74.38%), unsaponifiable matter (319.09 mg/kg), total phenols (124.08 mg/100 g), tocopherols (139.86 mg/100 g), as well as the highest ABTS and FRAP values (349.45 and 3801.70 µmol Trolox/100 g). This finding suggests that Volvariella volvacea oil is a promising resource that should be further researched.

RESUMEN

The ratio of Sr/Ca ions in marine biogenic minerals is considered advantageous for tracking geochemical and biomineralization processes that occur in the oceans. It is debatable, though, whether the ratio in biominerals such as coral skeleton is simply related to values in the seawater environment or controlled by the organism. Recent data show that coral larvae produce partially disordered immature aragonite in Mg-containing Sr-poor calcifying fluids, which transforms into well-ordered aragonite in Mg-depleted Sr-enriched environments, upon animal metamorphosis into the sessile polyp state. Inspired by the process in young coral, we explored in vitro substitution of Ca by Sr in aragonite by exposing aragonite crystals precipitated a priori to Sr solutions with variable concentrations. The resulting biphasic material, comprised of Sr-doped aragonite and Ca-doped strontianite, was carefully analyzed for foreign cation substitution in each polymorph. This allowed to establish a linear correlation between Sr levels in mineralizing solutions and Sr in aragonite as well as Ca in strontianite. It indicated that ca. 5-fold higher Sr solution concentration is needed for substitution in the crystal to reach the level found in corals. It also provided with Sr levels required for a putative strontianite phase to form.

RESUMEN

Mare basalts returned by the Chang'E-5 (CE5) mission extend the duration of lunar volcanism almost one billion years longer than previously dated. Recent studies demonstrated that the young volcanism was related neither to radiogenic heating nor to hydrous melting. These findings beg the question of how the young lunar volcanism happened. Here we perform high-precision minor element analyses of olivine in the CE5 basalts, focusing on Ni and Co. Our results reveal that the CE5 basalt olivines have overall lower Ni and Co than those in the Apollo low-Ti basalts. The distinctive olivine chemistry with recently reported bulk-rock chemistry carries evidence for more late-stage clinopyroxene-ilmenite cumulates of the lunar magma ocean (LMO) in the CE5 mantle source. The involvement of these Fe-rich cumulates could lower the mantle melting temperature and produce low MgO magma, inhibiting Ni and Co partitioning into the magma during lunar mantle melting and forming low Ni and Co olivines for the CE5 basalts. Moreover, the CE5 olivines show a continuous decrease of Ni and Co with crystallization proceeding. Fractional crystallization modeling indicates that Co decreasing with crystallization resulted from CaO and TiO2 enrichment (with MgO and SiO2 depletion) in the CE5 primary magma. This further supports the significant contribution of late-stage LMO cumulates to the CE5 volcanic formation. We suggest that adding easily melted LMO components resulting in mantle melting point depression is a key pathway for driving prolonged lunar volcanism. This study highlights the usefulness of olivine for investigating magmatic processes on the Moon.

RESUMEN

Different types of pepper (Piper nigrum L.) and cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) are widely used spices that exhibit therapeutic properties in addition to nutritional properties. In order to characterize these foods in further detail, the content of macro- (Ca, K, Mg, Na) and microelements (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Te, Tl, V and Zn) of four pepper types was determined via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted digestion using nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The obtained results were then evaluated using chemometric methods. The content of macroelements and microelements lies in the expected ranges for such spices but differs significantly between different types. The content of macro- and microelements is characteristic for pepper types originating from different plant species, but also based on further processing. Whilst green and black pepper are similar to each other, clearly diverse patterns are obtained for white pepper (different processing method) and cayenne pepper (different plant species).

RESUMEN

Forty-seven elements in leafy green vegetables were studied to estimate the daily intakes from this food category in different scenarios (average and high consumers) and age groups of the Canary Islands population. The contribution of the consumption of each type of vegetable to the reference intakes of essential, toxic and potentially toxic elements was assessed and the risk-benefit ratio was evaluated. The leafy vegetables that provide the highest levels of elements are spinach, arugula, watercress and chard. While spinach, chard, arugula, lettuce sprouts and watercress were the leafy vegetables with the highest concentrations of essential elements (38,743 ng/g of Fe in spinach, 3733 ng/g of Zn in watercress), the high levels of Mn in chard, spinach and watercress are noteworthy. Among the toxic elements, Cd is the element with the highest concentration, followed by As and Pb. The vegetable with the highest concentration of potentially toxic elements (Al, Ag, Be, Cr, Ni, Sr and V) is spinach. In average adult consumers, while the greatest contribution of essential elements comes from arugula, spinach and watercress, insignificant dietary intakes of potentially toxic metals are observed. Toxic metal intakes from the consumption of leafy vegetables in the Canary Islands do not show significant values, so the consumption of these foods does not pose a health risk. In conclusion, the consumption of leafy vegetables provides significant levels of some essential elements (Fe, Mn, Mo, Co and Se), but also of some potentially toxic elements (Al, Cr and Tl). A high consumer of leafy vegetables would see their daily nutritional needs regarding Fe, Mn, Mo, and Co covered, although they are also exposed to moderately worrying levels of Tl. To monitor the safety of dietary exposure to these metals, total diet studies on those elements with dietary exposures above the reference values derived from the consumption of this food category, mainly Tl, are recommended.

RESUMEN

The present study first describes the variations in concentrations of 12 chemical elements in groundwater relative to salinity levels in Southern Quebec (Canada) groundwater systems, and then uses this data to develop an empirical predictive model for evaluating groundwater chemical composition relative to salinity levels. Data is drawn from a large groundwater chemistry database containing 2608 samples. Eight salinity classes were established from lowest to highest chloride (Cl) concentrations. Graphical analyses were applied to describe variations in major, minor, and trace element concentrations relative to salinity levels. Results show that the major elements were found to be dominant in the lower salinity classes, whereas Cl becomes dominant at the highest salinity classes. For each of the major elements, a transitional state was identified between domination of the major elements and domination of Cl. This transition occurred at a different level of salinity for each of the major elements. Except for Si, the minor elements Ba, B, and Sr generally increase relative to the increase of Cl. The highest Mn concentrations were found to be associated with only the highest levels of Cl, whereas F was observed to be more abundant than Mn. Based on this analysis of the data, a correlation table was established between salinity level and concentrations of the chemical constituents. We thus propose a predictive empirical model, identifying a profile of the chemical composition of groundwater relative to salinity levels, to help homeowners and groundwater managers evaluate groundwater quality before resorting to laborious and costly laboratory analyses.

RESUMEN

Endotoxemia induced in vivo in mice by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) leads to (neuro)inflammation and sepsis. Also the homeostasis of mineral elements can be altered through mechanisms that still are poorly understood. The isotopic composition of Mg and the concentrations of the minor elements Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, and S were determined in biological fluids and tissues of young (14-28 weeks) and aged (40-65 weeks) LPS-injected mice and age-matched controls to reveal potential effects of the LPS-induced infection. Blood plasma of young and aged LPS-injected mice showed a heavy Mg isotopic composition, as well as elevated Mg and P concentrations, compared to matched controls. The plasma Mg isotopic composition was correlated with the P concentration in aged mice. Also the liver Mg isotopic composition was strongly affected in the young and aged LPS-injected mice, while for aged mice, an additional effect on the urine Mg isotopic composition was established. These observations were hypothetically associated with liver inflammation and/or hepatotoxicity, and reduced urinary Mg excretion, respectively. Also a regional endotoxin-induced difference was observed in the brain Mg isotopic composition for the aged mice only, and was attributed to potential disruption of the blood-brain barrier.

RESUMEN

Minor elements received more attention in recent years due to their contamination susceptibility and environmental impact. Surface sediment samples were collected from 29 sites and total contents of eight minor elements (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) were investigated in order to determine the geostatistical distribution and to predict ecological implications. The relationship between metals and ecological implications was analyzed by using the geochemical normalization approach and ecological prediction indicators such as the enrichment factor (EF), the contamination degree (CD), the environmental toxicity quotient (ETQ), and the health risk assessment. Based on the studied toxic metals, it was observed that the most toxic element in Tazlau River sediments is Cr. The assessment results of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks via dermal contact indicate that the study area shows no human health risk. The correlation matrix and principal component analysis (PCA) provide an overview of the major sources, anthropogenic versus geogenic, where Cr and Cd mainly originate from anthropogenic sources, while Pb is derived from a geogenic source. The approaches used in this study will provide a baseline regarding the accumulation of minor elements in the sediment and will be useful for other studies to easily identify the major contaminates and to estimate the health human risk.

RESUMEN

The decomposition dynamics of 34 different elements in four different litter types (foliar and woody litter) from Pinus densiflora (Korean red pine) and Castanea crenata (Korean chestnut) was investigated in a cool temperate ecosystem using the litterbag method. Two contrasting trends were observed in the dynamics of elements with accumulated mass loss of litter and carbon. Leaf litter of Korean chestnut, which was richer in elements, showed a general decrease in concentrations of elements with accumulated mass loss of litter and carbon on a dry mass basis during decomposition in the field. Other litter types, with initially lower concentrations of elements, exhibited an increase in concentration on a dry mass basis during field incubation. Highest relative increase in the concentration was noticed for the minor elements, and for the woody litters. Concentrations of major and minor elements increased by factors ranging from 1.07 for antimony (Sb) to 853.7 for vanadium (V). Rare earth elements (REE) concentrations increased by factors ranging from 1.04 for scandium (Sc) to 83.5 for thorium (Th). Our results suggest that litter type plays an important role for nutrient dynamics. Results from principal component analysis for major, minor, and rare earth elements showed grouping of elements and high correlation among them (P < 0.05), which suggests a common source. At both sites, element concentrations were high in the soil, especially for REE. This suggests that increase in element concentrations during field incubation probably was due to transfer of elements from soil to the overlying decomposing litter.

RESUMEN

A new method for fast sequential measurements of concentrations of Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn and Na in apple juices by high resolution-continuum source-flame atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-FAAS) was developed using response surface methodology (RSM). By combination of Box-Behnken response surface design and desirability functions, compromise conditions of simplified sample preparation of apple juices, including 2-fold dilution with water and acidification with HNO3 to 0.8 mol L-1, were established and verified that provided reliable results. The method was applied for analysis of 20 different samples of commercially sold apple juices. Precision (as relative standard deviation for 3 parallel samples, RSD) and accuracy (as relative error in relation to reference values obtained with prior wet digestion of samples) were very good, i.e. from 0.5% to 6% and from -5 to + 6%, respectively.

RESUMEN

Obtaining quantitative chemical information using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is challenging due to the variability in the bulk composition of geological materials. Chemical matrix effects caused by this variability produce changes in the peak area that are not proportional to the changes in minor element concentration. Therefore the use of univariate calibrations to predict trace element concentrations in geological samples is plagued by a high degree of uncertainty. This work evaluated the accuracy of univariate minor element predictions as a function of the composition of the major element matrices of the samples and examined the factors that limit the prediction accuracy of univariate calibrations. Five different sample matrices were doped with 10-85 000 ppm Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Co and then independently measured in 175 mixtures by X-ray fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, the latter at three different laser energies (1.9, 2.8, and 3.7 mJ). Univariate prediction models for minor element concentrations were created using varying combinations of dopants, matrices, normalization/no normalization, and energy density; the model accuracies were evaluated using root mean square prediction errors and leave-one-out cross-validation. The results showed the superiority of using normalization for predictions of minor elements when the predicted sample and those in the training set had matrices with similar SiO2 contents. Normalization also mitigates differences in spectra arising from laser/sample coupling effects and the use of different energy densities. Prediction of minor elements in matrices that are dissimilar to those in the training set can increase the uncertainty of prediction by an order of magnitude. Overall, the quality of a univariate calibration is primarily determined by the availability of a persistent, measurable peak with a favorable transition probability that has little to no interference from neighboring peaks in the spectra of both the unknown and those used to train it.

RESUMEN

A 2014 case study investigated the relative accumulation efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), total sulfur (S), total nitrogen (N), major and minor elements and Pb isotopes in five common lichen species at three boreal forest sites in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in northeastern Alberta, Canada to identify the optimum lichen species for future biomonitoring. Differences in concentrations of PAHs, multiple elements, and Pb isotopes in fruticose (Bryoria furcellata, Cladina mitis, Evernia mesomorpha) and foliose (Hypogymnia physodes and Tuckermannopsis americana) lichens were found along a 100 km distance gradient from the primary oil sands operations. Integration of insights from emission source samples and oil sands mineralogy in consort with aerosol collection indicates incorporation of more fine particulate matter (PM) into foliose than fruticose lichen biomass. Contrasting PAH with element concentrations allowed lichen species specific accumulation patterns to be identified. The ability of lichen species to incorporate different amounts of gas phase (S and N), petrogenic (V, Ni, Mo), clay (low Si/Al and more rare earth elements), and sand (higher Si/Al and Ti) components from the oil sand operations reflects aerosol particle size and lichen physiology differences that translate into differences in PM transport distances and lichen accumulation efficiencies. Based on these findings Hypogymnia physodes is recommended for future PAH biomonitoring and source attribution studies.

RESUMEN

Geospatial dataset of trace elements including manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), rubidium (Rb), strontium (Sr), thorium (Th), Vanadium (V) and Zirconium (Zr) of near-surface soils in a Cu-Ni prospecting field at Airstrip North, Central Botswana were statistically analysed. Grid sampling method was used in the field data collection. The relatively new portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (Delta Premium, 510890, USA) technology in a "soil" mode was used to measure the concentrations of trace elements in the soils. The data presented was obtained from the average reading of two soil samples collected from same point but passed through sieves. Sequel to DOI: 10.1016/j.dib.2016.08.026 (P.N. Eze, V.S.
