Extracellular hydrolysis of the phosphate esters of B vitamins (B1, B2, and B6) is crucial for their cellular uptake and metabolism. Although a few zinc-dependent enzymes have been implicated in these processes, their exact mechanisms of action remain largely unknown. This study investigated the potential involvement of phosphate group hydrolyzing enzymes in the hydrolysis of B vitamin phosphate esters. We evaluated enzyme activity in membrane lysates prepared from cells transiently transfected with these enzymes or those endogenously expressing them. Specifically, we investigated how zinc deficiency affects the rate of hydrolysis of B vitamin phosphate esters in cellular lysates. Assessment of the activities of zinc-dependent ectoenzymes in the lysates prepared from cells cultured in zinc-deficient conditions and in the serum of rats fed zinc-deficient diets revealed that zinc deficiency reduced the extracellular hydrolysis activity of B vitamin phosphate esters. Furthermore, our findings explain the similarities between several symptoms of B vitamin and zinc deficiencies. Collectively, this study provides novel insights into the diverse symptoms of zinc deficiency and could guide the development of appropriate clinical strategies.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The cause of Crohn's disease (CD) is unknown, but the current hypothesis is that microbial or environmental factors induce gut inflammation in genetically susceptible individuals, leading to chronic intestinal inflammation. Case-control studies of patients with CD have cataloged alterations in the gut microbiome composition; however, these studies fail to distinguish whether the altered gut microbiome composition is associated with initiation of CD or is the result of inflammation or drug treatment. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 3483 healthy first-degree relatives (FDRs) of patients with CD were recruited to identify the gut microbiome composition that precedes the onset of CD and to what extent this composition predicts the risk of developing CD. We applied a machine learning approach to the analysis of the gut microbiome composition (based on 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing) to define a microbial signature that associates with future development of CD. The performance of the model was assessed in an independent validation cohort. RESULTS: In the validation cohort, the microbiome risk score (MRS) model yielded a hazard ratio of 2.24 (95% confidence interval, 1.03-4.84; P = .04), using the median of the MRS from the discovery cohort as the threshold. The MRS demonstrated a temporal validity by capturing individuals that developed CD up to 5 years before disease onset (area under the curve > 0.65). The 5 most important taxa contributing to the MRS included Ruminococcus torques, Blautia, Colidextribacter, an uncultured genus-level group from Oscillospiraceae, and Roseburia. CONCLUSION: This study is the first to demonstrate that gut microbiome composition is associated with future onset of CD and suggests that gut microbiome is a contributor in the pathogenesis of CD.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B inadequacies and elevated homocysteine status have been associated with impaired cognitive and cardiometabolic health with aging. There is, however, a scarcity of research investigating integrated profiles of one-carbon (1C) metabolites in this context, including metabolites of interconnected folate, methionine, choline oxidation, and transsulfuration pathways. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to examine associations between vitamins B and 1C metabolites with cardiometabolic health and cognitive function in healthy older adults, including the interactive effects of Apolipoprotein E-ε4 status. METHODS: Three hundred and thirteen healthy participants (65-74 y, 65% female) were analyzed. Vitamins B were estimated according to dietary intake (4-d food records) and biochemical status (serum folate and vitamin B12). Fasting plasma 1C metabolites were quantified by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Measures of cardiometabolic health included biochemical (lipid panel, blood glucose) and anthropometric markers. Cognitive function was assessed by the Computerized Mental Performance Assessment System (COMPASS) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Associations were analyzed using multivariate linear (COMPASS, cardiometabolic health) and Poisson (MoCA) regression modeling. RESULTS: Over 90% of participants met dietary recommendations for riboflavin and vitamins B6 and B12, but only 78% of males and 67% of females achieved adequate folate intakes. Higher serum folate and plasma betaine and glycine concentrations were associated with favorable cardiometabolic markers, whereas higher plasma choline and homocysteine concentrations were associated with greater cardiometabolic risk based on body mass index and serum lipids concentration values (P< 0.05). Vitamins B and homocysteine were not associated with cognitive performance in this cohort, though higher glycine concentrations were associated with better global cognitive performance (P = 0.017), episodic memory (P = 0.016), and spatial memory (P = 0.027) scores. Apolipoprotein E-ε4 status did not modify the relationship between vitamins B or 1C metabolites with cognitive function in linear regression analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin B and 1C metabolite profiles showed divergent associations with cardiometabolic risk markers and limited associations with cognitive performance in this cohort of healthy older adults.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of thiamin and folic acid supplementation on the improvement of the cognitive function in patients with maintenance hemodialysis. METHOD: In the present study, we randomly assigned patients undergoing hemodialysis who had the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score lower than 26 to treatment group (n = 25, thiamin 90 mg/day combined with folic acid 30 mg/day) or control group (n = 25, nonintervention). All subjects were followed up for 96 weeks. The primary outcome was the improvement of the MoCA score. The secondary outcomes included homocysteine level, survival and safety. RESULTS: Patients in treatment group had an increase of the MoCA score from 21.95 ± 3.81 at baseline to 25.68 ± 1.96 at week 96 (p < 0.001, primary outcome), as compared with the MoCA score from 20.69 ± 3.40 to 19.62 ± 3.58 in control group. Thiamin combined with folic acid treatment also resulted in lower level of serum homocysteine in treatment group compare with control group at week 96 (p < 0.05, secondary outcome). 3 patients and 9 patients died during follow-up period in treatment and control group respectively (p = 0.048). The proportion of adverse events in treatment group was significantly lower than that in control group. CONCLUSION: Hemodialysis patients with cognitive impairment treated with thiamin and folic acid had a significant improvement in MoCA score.

Hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for endothelial dysfunction and, consequently, for cardiovascular disease and multiple other conditions. Impairment of homocysteine metabolism is known to occur in thyroid dysfunction. In particular, patients with hypothyroidism have significantly higher homocysteine levels than healthy people. Metabolism of homocysteine occurs in methylation cycle (whose normal functioning is dependent on tissue pools of vitamins B9, B12 and betaine), and also in reactions of trans-sulfonation, where pyridoxal phosphate (a pyridoxine derivative) acts as a coenzyme. AIM: The aim of this study was to perform an experimental feasibility assessment of using pyridoxine, betaine, folic acid and cyanocobalamin to correct the methionine and homocysteine metabolism impaired by hyper- and hypothyroidism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prolonged hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were modeled in experimental rats by dosing the animals with L-thyroxine and thiamazole, respectively, for 21 days. RESULTS: Prolonged hyper- and hypothyroidism was found to cause oppositely directional changes in homocysteine metabolism. Hyperthyroidism was causing a significant increase in activity of S-adenosyl-methionine synthase, betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase and S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase in the liver and kidneys compared to control group of animals. Such directionality of changes in activities of above mentioned enzymes has led to a reduction in serum homocysteine levels. Hypothyroidism inhibited the activity of S-adenosyl-methionine synthase, betainehomocysteine methyltransferase and S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase in the liver and in the kidneys of rats compared to controls. Betaine partially prevented impaired betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase activity in hyper- and hypothyroidism. Folic acid, cyanocobalamin and pyridoxine significantly reduced homocysteine levels in the blood of animals with hypothyroidism. CONCLUSIONS: A conclusion was made that the above agents could be effective factors to prevent endothelial dysfunction in hypothyroidism.

Many studies have been written on vitamin supplementation, fatty acid, and dementia, but results are still under debate, and no definite conclusion has yet been drawn. Nevertheless, a significant amount of lab evidence confirms that vitamins of the B group are tightly related to gene control for endothelium protection, act as antioxidants, play a co-enzymatic role in the most critical biochemical reactions inside the brain, and cooperate with many other elements, such as choline, for the synthesis of polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine, through S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM) methyl donation. B-vitamins have anti-inflammatory properties and act in protective roles against neurodegenerative mechanisms, for example, through modulation of the glutamate currents and a reduction of the calcium currents. In addition, they also have extraordinary antioxidant properties. However, laboratory data are far from clinical practice. Many studies have tried to apply these results in everyday clinical activity, but results have been discouraging and far from a possible resolution of the associated mysteries, like those represented by Alzheimer's disease (AD) or small vessel disease dementia. Above all, two significant problems emerge from the research: No consensus exists on general diagnostic criteria-MCI or AD? Which diagnostic criteria should be applied for small vessel disease-related dementia? In addition, no general schema exists for determining a possible correct time of implementation to have effective results. Here we present an up-to-date review of the literature on such topics, shedding some light on the possible interaction of vitamins and phosphatidylcholine, and their role in brain metabolism and catabolism. Further studies should take into account all of these questions, with well-designed and world-homogeneous trials.

Skin aging is accompanied by a gradual loss of function, physiological integrity and the ability to cope with internal and external stressors. This is secondary to a combination of complex biological processes influenced by constitutive and environmental factors or by local and systemic pathologies. Skin aging and its phenotypic presentation are dependent on constitutive (genetic) and systemic factors. It can be accelerated by environmental stressors, such as ultraviolet radiation, pollutants and microbial insults. The skin's functions and its abilities to cope with external stressors are regulated by the cutaneous neuroendocrine systems encompassing the regulated and coordinated production of neuropeptides, neurohormones, neurotransmitters and hormones, including steroids and secosteroids. These will induce/stimulate downstream signaling through activation of corresponding receptors. These pathways and corresponding coordinated responses to the stressors decay with age or undergo pathological malfunctions. This affects the overall skin phenotype and epidermal, dermal, hypodermal and adnexal functions. We propose that skin aging can be attenuated or its phenotypic presentation reversed by the topical use of selected factors with local neurohormonal activities targeting specific receptors or enzymes. Some of our favorite factors include melatonin and its metabolites, noncalcemic secosteroids and lumisterol derivatives, because of their low toxicity and their desirable local phenotypic effects.

Low back pain (LBP) is frequent cause for visit to the doctor and common cause of disability. Modern experts' recommendations for diagnostics and treatment of acute LBP are presented. Common mistakes, difficulties in diagnostics and treatment of acute LBP are discussed. Diagnosis of non - specific acute LBP is based on clinical examination and exclusion of specific causes of back pain. Instrumental studies are not needed in most cases of acute LBP. Key steps in the treatment of patients with acute non - specific LBP are to inform of patients about good prognosis of pain, to recommend daily activity and avoidance of bed rest, to prescribe nonsteroidal anti - inflammatory drug for pain reducing. Effectiveness of vitamins B in acute LBP is discussed.

Biochemical, vitamin, trace element and immunological changes were searched for the combined nutritional deficiency of vitamins B1, B2, B6 on in vivo models in rats and mice. Female rats of Wistar (W) strain and hybrids of the 1st generation of Dark Aguti and Wistar (DA x W) strains, female mice of BALB/c strain and DBCB tetrahybrids were used in experiment. Animals received for 35 days a balanced diet (control) according to AIN-93 or a similar diet with the exception of vitamins B1, B2, B6 (experimental groups). The content of vitamins B1, B2 in liver, riboflavin blood plasma level and urinary excretion of thiamine, riboflavin and 4-pyridoxic acid were determined, as well as in rats: blood and liver content of α-tocopherol and retinol, blood biochemical indices of lipid and nitrogen metabolism, activity of cytochrome P isoforms-450 (CYP) in liver; in mice: the circulating levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines of blood plasma, in animals of both species - the content of essential and toxic elements in the kidneys. DAxW rats compared to W and DBCB mice compared to BALB/c were more sensitive to the development of B-vitamin deficiency judging by the B-vitamin status indicators. In the rats of the experimental groups, there were signs of a deterioration in blood and liver levels of vitamin E, multidirectional shifts in vitamin A sufficiency, increased activity of the CYP3A isoform (6ß-TG), a decrease in triglycerides, total protein and albumin fraction levels with an increase in urea level. Manifestation degree of these effects depended on the choice of the animal's line. In mice, the B-vitamin deficiency was characterized by an increase in the levels of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-10, IL-Ιß, IL-6 and a decrease in IFN-γ and IL-17A. The content of magnesium, copper, zinc, chromium and silver was lowered, of cesium - was increased in the kidneys of the rats of the experimental groups. In mice, B-vitamin deficiency resulted in diminishment of magnesium, copper, zinc, chromium, selenium, cadmium and lead content, excess accumulation of cobalt and cesium. Some of these biomarkers are supposed to be used in pre-clinical evaluation of the effectiveness of new vitamin complexes, specialized foods and dietary supplements, as well as studies of interactions of various vitamins.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is becoming an inevitable consequence of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. As the disease progresses, and through dialysis, the need for and loss of water-soluble vitamins both increase. This review article looks at the benefits and possible risks of supplementing these vitamins with the treatment of CKD. METHODS: Data in the PubMed and Embase databases were analyzed. The keywords "chronic kidney disease", in various combinations, are associated with thiamin, riboflavin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, folates, niacin, cobalamin, and vitamin C. This review focuses on the possible use of water-soluble vitamin supplementation to improve pharmacological responses and the overall clinical condition of patients. RESULTS: The mechanism of supportive supplementation is based on reducing oxidative stress, covering the increased demand and losses resulting from the treatment method. In the initial period of failure (G2-G3a), it does not require intervention, but later, especially in the case of inadequate nutrition, the inclusion of supplementation with folate and cobalamin may bring benefits. Such supplementation seems to be a necessity in patients with stage G4 or G5 (uremia). Conversely, the inclusion of additional B6 supplementation to reduce CV risk may be considered. At stage 3b and beyond (stages 4-5), the inclusion of niacin at a dose of 400-1000 mg, depending on the patient's tolerance, is required to lower the phosphate level. The inclusion of supplementation with thiamine and other water-soluble vitamins, especially in peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis patients, is necessary for reducing dialysis losses. Allowing hemodialysis patients to take low doses of oral vitamin C effectively reduces erythropoietin dose requirements and improves anemia in functional iron-deficient patients. However, it should be considered that doses of B vitamins that are several times higher than the recommended dietary allowance of consumption may exacerbate left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in CKD patients. CONCLUSIONS: Taking into account the research conducted so far, it seems that the use of vitamin supplementation in CKD patients may have a positive impact on the treatment process and maintaining a disease-free condition.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B deficiencies are involved with several outcomes in fertility and pregnancy. In Brazil, the national prevalence rates of these micronutrient deficiencies in women of reproductive age were not known. This study aims to systematically identify, select, evaluate, analyze, and report the prevalence rates of vitamin B complex deficiencies in women of reproductive age in Brazil and identify variables that may modify the outcome rates. METHODS: A systematic review will be conducted guided by the following question: "What is the prevalence of vitamin B deficiencies in women of reproductive age in Brazil?". The studies will be identified and selected from a literature search using electronic databases, consultation with researchers/specialists, and reference lists of eligible studies and reviews on the topic. Major eligibility criteria include observational cross-sectional and cohort studies carried out in Brazil and performed in women 10-49 years old, or pregnant and lactating mothers, and investigated the deficiency of vitamin B complex by laboratory test. Two reviewers independently will perform the screening and selection of the studies, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. For the data report, a narrative approach will be used to present the characteristics of the included studies and individual findings. A random meta-analysis model will be implemented to summarize the individual prevalence rates in a global value if the studies are sufficiently homogeneous. DISCUSSION: This study aims to identify the national and regional prevalence rates of vitamin B complex deficiencies in women of reproductive age; allow the policymakers discuss, plan, and implement public policies to screen; and prevent and/or treat these malnutrition conditions. This also aims to know the rates of nutritional deficiencies over the years, serving as an indirect indicator of the socioeconomic and dietary patterns of the population. Specifically for folate, this study allows to compare the prevalence rates of deficiency of this vitamin before and after the mandatory fortification of wheat and corn flours implemented since 2004 in Brazil, in this specific population. The evidence gathered may highlight the need for population-based studies to investigate the deficiency of these vitamins. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42020188474.

Plasma activated water (PAW) recently received much attention as an alternative food preservation method. However, its effects on food quality are still scarce. This study evaluates the effect of PAW processing time on bioactive compounds of rocket-salad leaves including: 18 phenolic compounds, vitamin C, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, and nicotinamide. Moreover, the impact of PAW on both antioxidant (DPPH) and peroxidase (POD) activities was also investigated. This was performed using HPLC-DAD, HPLC-MS/MS, and spectrophotometric analysis. All treatments induced non-significant increases in total phenolic contents. However, depending on processing time, significant increases or decreases of individual phenolic compounds were observed. PAW-10 and -20 increased the ascorbic acid content to 382.76 and 363.14 mg/100 g, respectively, compared to control (337.73 mg/100 g). Riboflavin and nicotinic acid contents were increased significantly in PAW-20 (0.53 and 1.26 mg/100), compared to control (0.32 and 0.61 mg/100 g, respectively). However, nicotinamide showed non-significant increase in all treatments. Antioxidant activity improved significantly only in PAW-20, while peroxidase activity was reduced up to 36% in the longest treatment. In conclusion, PAW treatment could be an effective technique for rocket decontamination since it positively influenced the quality of rocket, improving the retention of polyphenols and vitamins.

B vitamins may protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We evaluated the associations of dietary intake and serum vitamins with the incidence of advanced AMD in the Alienor study. The Alienor study is a prospective population-based cohort of 963 residents of Bordeaux, France, who were 73 years or older at baseline (2006-2008). Examinations were performed every two years over an eight-year period. The incidence of AMD is based on retinal fundus photographs and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography examinations. Among the 861 included participants, 93 developed incident AMD during a median follow-up time of 9.8 years. Participants with normal serum folate (≥10 nmol/L) significantly had a 51% reduced risk for AMD in the fully adjusted Cox model (HR, 0.49 [95% CI, 0.25-0.95], p = 0.036). Participants with a higher dietary intake of B5 and B6 vitamins had a lower risk for developing AMD of up to 28% (HR, 0.72 for 1-SD increase [0.53-0.99], p = 0.049; HR, 0.90 [0.81-0.99], p = 0.049, respectively). This cohort study of older adults suggests a strong association between a normal serum folate status, a high dietary intake of B5 and B6 and a lower risk for developing advanced AMD. Adopting a healthy diet rich in B vitamins may help to reduce vision loss due to AMD.

The positively charged products of Cisplatin hydrolysis can form bonds with Guanine and Adenine, showing the ability to crosslink with nucleobases within the double helical DNA, and leading to apoptosis of the neoplastic cell. It has been proved that the presence of chemicals other than nucleobases, compound of aromatic rings with a nitrogen lone pair on the ring, such as B vitamins, may have a competitive character in relation to a chemotherapeutic drug. A theoretical study confirms the stability of bonds formed not only between Cisplatin and Guanine/Adenine but also Cisplatin and B vitamins, namely Thiamine (vit.B1), Niacin (vit.B3), Riboflavin (vit.B2) and Pyridoxal phosphate (vit.B6). That is why it seems to be justified to conduct the research on the physicochemical, thermochemical and optical properties of mono and diaqua complexes of Cisplatin with nucleobases and B vitamins. Equally important is carrying out such research as spectroscopic measurements, bond order analysis and vibrational analysis of the studied complexes. The complexation reaction is spontaneous and thermodynamically favored with the high electronegativity value, a shift of the electron density from the metal zone towards organic compounds, a reduction the value of gap parameter and a shift of the maximum absorbance ΔλABS towards longer wavelengths. Moreover, the performed density variation upon photoexcitation showed the contributions from HOMOâLUMO transition, where the maximum of the absorption band shifts towards shorter wavelengths compared to the cisPt derivatives, thereby lowering the photoexcitation energy. The formation of complexes causes the reduction of energy gap (ΔEgap) values and show higher kinetic stability with high values of gap. The bonding energies between Cisplatin and the target molecules were performed. Cisplatin forms the strongest bonds with Guanine and Pyridoxal phosphate (vit.B6). The vibrations of Pt-N7 bond in complexes occur in the low range of frequencies with low intensities. Only in case of nucleobases appeared vibrations of Pt-N7 in high frequencies. The highest intensity is shown by symmetry and asymmetry stretching vibrations of H-O(H2O) bonds in the high range of frequencies. The vibrations related with ammonium groups (NH3) of great importance appear in the medium and high range of frequencies. The complexes with Guanine show the highest intensities. A theoretical IR spectra were studied. The obtained calculated IR spectra for native nucleobases and vitamins from B group were compared with their experimental FT-IR. So the conducted research provides theoretical knowledge in practical terms regarding the physicochemical and spectral properties of the formed Cisplatin complexes with both nucleobases and B vitamins. Theoretical and partially experimental studies of the molecular and electronic structure or prediction of spectroscopic characteristics are quite useful for better understanding of the reactivity of this drug with physiological target molecules.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The active coenzymes of the water soluble vitamins B1 and B6 (thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) and pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P) respectively) play an important role in numerous bodily functions. The simultaneous analysis of both these analytes is limited to either mass spectrometry based methods or commercial kit suppliers. In this study we developed a novel method for analysis of both TPP and P5P by fluorescence detection. METHODS: Briefly, whole blood samples are precipitated by trichloroacetic acid, and P5P and TPP are both derivatised before separation on a C18-PFP column. The new assay's performance was compared against a recent cycle from an external quality assurance program (RCPAQAP) and the current only existing commercial kit (n = 76). RESULTS: Linearity for both analytes was above 0.99 (r2) up to a concentration range of: 4000 nmol/L (P5P) and 2000 nmol/L (TPP). Precision of the method (intra-day and inter-day) compared against commercial quality control material was below 6% (coefficient of variation). Recovery of both compounds exceeded 90%. Accuracy of the protocol displayed satisfactory results in proficiency testing and had an acceptable level of agreement with the existing current kit method. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, this method provides an economical alternative in routine clinical diagnostic laboratories wishing to perform P5P and TPP analysis.

BACKGROUND: Piriformis syndrome (PS) is an entrapment of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, or myofascial pain from the piriformis muscle. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Mannitol plus Vitamins B regime in the management of PS. METHODS: Twenty two patients were included in this study and received 250 ml of mannitol 20% intravenous infusion for 5 days + Vitamins B (vitamin B1 10 mg + vitamin B2 10 mg + vitamin B12 50 µg PO) for 6 weeks. Clinical outcomes were assessed systematically by clinical tests (tenderness, FAIR test, Beatty's, Freiberg's and Pace's maneuver), Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Likert Analogue Scale (LAS), and MR examination. RESULTS: The clinical evaluations showed a significant reduction (p< 0.05) of tenderness, FAIR test, Beatty's maneuver, Freiberg's maneuver and Pace's maneuver when compared with baseline evaluation during the 3rd and 6th month follow-ups. A statistically significant improvement of pain was measured by NRS at resting (p< 0.001), at night (p< 0.001) and during activities (p< 0.001) and LAS with prolonged sitting (p< 0.001), standing (p< 0.001) and lying (p< 0.001). Concomitantly, swelling of SN revealed a significant reduction (p= 0.003) from 86.4% to 18.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Mannitol plus Vitamins B is effective in the management of piriformis syndrome and it could be an alternative regime in treating PS.

There is evidence that hyperhomocysteinemia may be associated with the development of schizophrenia and cognitive impairment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between cognitive functions and normal homocysteine concentrations vs. hyperhomocysteinemia in schizophrenia patients before and after supplementation with vitamins B6, B12 and folate. An 8-week prospective, non-randomized study enrolled 122 adult patients with schizophrenia (67F/55M, mean age 43.54⯱â¯11.94â¯years). Homocysteine concentrations were measured in all individuals and afterwards hyperhomocysteinemia patients (nâ¯=â¯42) were divided into two subgroups: treated with oral vitamins supplementation (B6 - 25â¯mg/d, B12 - 20⯵g/d, folate - 2,5â¯mg/d) (nâ¯=â¯22) and without supplementation (nâ¯=â¯20). The assessment of schizophrenia symptoms severity in study group was performed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Cognitive functions were evaluated using the Stroop test and the Trail Making Test (TMT). We observed a higher prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia in schizophrenia patients (34.4%) in comparison to the general population. Individuals with schizophrenia and coexisting hyperhomocysteinemia had worse performance on the Stroop and the TMT tests as well as higher PANSS scores. In these patients, supplementation with vitamins effectively decreased the homocysteine concentrations to the normal values, however there was no statistically significant improvement in the PANSS and cognitive test scores, except a significant decrease in the number of the Stroop test errors. We conclude that significant results obtained in this study show that there is a relationship between homocysteine blood concentration and schizophrenia severity. Moreover, homocysteine concentration lowering might be beneficial in schizophrenia patients with hyperhomocysteinemia in terms of cognitive functions improvement.

Diabetic polyneuropathy is the most often complication of diabetes mellitus. However, patients with diabetes may have other neuropathies, which need to be recognized and treated. Chronic nnflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is the most common non-diabetic polyneuropathy in patients with diabetes. The article discusses the classification, clinical features of diabetic and nondiabetic polyneuropathies, modern methods of diagnosis and approaches to treatment.

We report simple and selective method for detection of vitamins B1 and B6 in brown and white rice samples using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of sucrose capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as a chemical sensor colorimetrically. Here, detection is based on the color change of AuNPs from pink to blue followed by a red shift of LSPR absorption band in UV-vis region with the addition of vitamins B1 and B6 into the NPs solution. A good linear range was observed in the range of 25-1000â¯ngmL-1 with detection limit of 8â¯ngmL-1 for B1 and 50-1000â¯ngmL-1 with detection limit of 15â¯ngmL-1 for vitamins B6. The employment of AuNPs for detection of B1 and B6 vitamins in rice food samples showed remarkable abilities in terms of the simplicity, low cost, stability, reproducibility and sensitivity.

The effects of the application of an acoustically assisted treatment on the vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3, and B5), the antioxidant activity (DPPH, FRAP), the polyphenol and flavonoid contents, the organic acid contents (citric and malic) and drying kinetics of pineapple (Ananas comosus var. Perola) have been studied. Treatments were carried out using two different soaking media: distilled water and pineapple juice at 30°C during 10, 20 and 30min without and with acoustic assistance (23.2W/L). After treatment, samples were dried at 60°C and 0.5m/s during 8h. The quality parameters were determined in untreated, treated, and treated-dried samples. The acoustic assistance promoted an increment of vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B5, total flavonoid and malic acid contents, and a reduction of vitamin C, total polyphenol content, antioxidant activity and citric acid content in treated samples. However, in all treated-dried samples the final content of those quality parameters was higher than the observed in the untreated dried sample.
