BACKGROUND: Studies evaluating surgical-site infection have had conflicting results with respect to the use of alcohol solutions containing iodine povacrylex or chlorhexidine gluconate as skin antisepsis before surgery to repair a fractured limb (i.e., an extremity fracture). METHODS: In a cluster-randomized, crossover trial at 25 hospitals in the United States and Canada, we randomly assigned hospitals to use a solution of 0.7% iodine povacrylex in 74% isopropyl alcohol (iodine group) or 2% chlorhexidine gluconate in 70% isopropyl alcohol (chlorhexidine group) as preoperative antisepsis for surgical procedures to repair extremity fractures. Every 2 months, the hospitals alternated interventions. Separate populations of patients with either open or closed fractures were enrolled and included in the analysis. The primary outcome was surgical-site infection, which included superficial incisional infection within 30 days or deep incisional or organ-space infection within 90 days. The secondary outcome was unplanned reoperation for fracture-healing complications. RESULTS: A total of 6785 patients with a closed fracture and 1700 patients with an open fracture were included in the trial. In the closed-fracture population, surgical-site infection occurred in 77 patients (2.4%) in the iodine group and in 108 patients (3.3%) in the chlorhexidine group (odds ratio, 0.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.55 to 1.00; P = 0.049). In the open-fracture population, surgical-site infection occurred in 54 patients (6.5%) in the iodine group and in 60 patients (7.3%) in the chlorhexidine group (odd ratio, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.58 to 1.27; P = 0.45). The frequencies of unplanned reoperation, 1-year outcomes, and serious adverse events were similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with closed extremity fractures, skin antisepsis with iodine povacrylex in alcohol resulted in fewer surgical-site infections than antisepsis with chlorhexidine gluconate in alcohol. In patients with open fractures, the results were similar in the two groups. Chemical modifications in RNAs play crucial roles in diversifying their structures and regulating numerous biochemical processes. Since the 1990s, several hydrophobic prenyl-modifications have been discovered in various RNAs. Prenyl groups serve as precursors for terpenes and many other biological molecules. The processes of prenylation in different macromolecules have been extensively studied. We introduce here a novel chemical biology toolkit that not only labels i6A, a prenyl-modified RNA residue, by leveraging the unique reactivity of the prenyl group, but also provides a general strategy to incorporate fluorescence functionalities into RNAs for molecular tracking purposes. Our findings revealed that iodine-mediated cyclization reactions of the prenyl group occur rapidly, transforming i6A from a hydrogen-bond acceptor to a donor. Based on this reactivity, we developed an Iodine-Mediated Cyclization and Reverse Transcription (IMCRT) tRNA-seq method, which can profile all nine endogenous tRNAs containing i6A residues in Saccharomyces cerevisiae with single-base resolution. Furthermore, under stress conditions, we observed a decline in i6A levels in budding yeast, accompanied by significant decrease of mutation rate at A37 position. Thus, the IMCRT tRNA-seq method not only permits semi-quantification of i6A levels in tRNAs but also holds potential for transcriptome-wide detection and analysis of various RNA species containing i6A modifications.

Chloroplast starch granules (cpSGs) store energy harvested through photosynthesis in plants, and cpSG dynamics have important roles in plant energy metabolism and stress responses. To date, cpSGs have been visualized using several methods, such as iodine staining; however, no method can be used to specifically visualize cpSGs in living cells from various plant species. Here, we report a simple method to visualize cpSGs in living plant cells in various species by staining with fluorescein, a commonly used fluorescent dye. We show that fluorescein is taken up into chloroplasts and interacts with cpSGs similarly to iodine. Fluorescein also interacts with refined starch in vitro. Using a fluorescein derivative for ultrabright cpSG imaging, we produced high-quality 3D reconstructions of cpSGs and evaluated their accumulation in multiple plant species. As fluorescein is well known and readily purchasable, our fluorescein-based staining method should contribute to all research regarding starch.

Iodine-induced cleavage at phosphorothioate DNA (PT-DNA) is characterized by extremely high sensitivity (∼1 phosphorothioate link per 106 nucleotides), which has been used for detecting and sequencing PT-DNA in bacteria. Despite its foreseeable potential for wide applications, the cleavage mechanism at the PT-modified site has not been well established, and it remains unknown as to whether or not cleavage of the bridging P-O occurs at every PT-modified site. In this work, we conducted accurate ωB97X-D calculations and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to investigate the process of PT-DNA cleavage at the atomic and molecular levels. We have found that iodine chemoselectively binds to the sulfur atom of the phosphorothioate link via a strong halogen-chalcogen interaction (a type of halogen bond, with binding affinity as high as 14.9 kcal/mol) and thus triggers P-O bond cleavage via phosphotriester-like hydrolysis. Additionally, aside from cleavage of the bridging P-O bond, the downstream hydrolyses lead to unwanted P-S/P-O conversions and a loss of the phosphorothioate handle. The mechanism we outline helps to explain specific selectivity at the PT-modified site but also predicts the dynamic stoichiometry of P-S and P-O bond breaking. For instance, Tris is involved in the cascade derivation of S-iodo-phosphorothioate to S-amino-phosphorothioate, suppressing the S-iodo-phosphorothioate hydrolysis to a phosphate diester. However, hydrolysis of one-third of the Tris-O-grafting phosphotriester results in unwanted P-S/P-O conversions. Our study suggests that bacterial DNA phosphorothioation may more frequently occur than previous bioinformatic estimations have predicted from iodine-induced deep sequencing data.

The catalytic depletion of Antarctic stratospheric ozone is linked to anthropogenic emissions of chlorine and bromine. Despite its larger ozone-depleting efficiency, the contribution of ocean-emitted iodine to ozone hole chemistry has not been evaluated, due to the negligible iodine levels previously reported to reach the stratosphere. Based on the recently observed range (0.77 ± 0.1 parts per trillion by volume [pptv]) of stratospheric iodine injection, we use the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model to assess the role of iodine in the formation and recent past evolution of the Antarctic ozone hole. Our 1980-2015 simulations indicate that iodine can significantly impact the lower part of the Antarctic ozone hole, contributing, on average, 10% of the lower stratospheric ozone loss during spring (up to 4.2% of the total stratospheric column). We find that the inclusion of iodine advances the beginning and delays the closure stages of the ozone hole by 3 d to 5 d, increasing its area and mass deficit by 11% and 20%, respectively. Despite being present in much smaller amounts, and due to faster gas-phase photochemical reactivation, iodine can dominate (∼73%) the halogen-mediated lower stratospheric ozone loss during summer and early fall, when the heterogeneous reactivation of inorganic chlorine and bromine reservoirs is reduced. The stratospheric ozone destruction caused by 0.77 pptv of iodine over Antarctica is equivalent to that of 3.1 (4.6) pptv of biogenic very short-lived bromocarbons during spring (rest of sunlit period). The relative contribution of iodine to future stratospheric ozone loss is likely to increase as anthropogenic chlorine and bromine emissions decline following the Montreal Protocol.

Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a condition that causes kidney damage in patients receiving angiography with iodine-based contrast agents. This study investigated the potential protective effects of berberine (BBR) against CIN and its underlying mechanisms. The researchers conducted both in vivo and in vitro experiments to explore BBR's renal protective effects. In the in vivo experiments, SD rats were used to create a CIN model, and different groups were established. The results showed that CIN model group exhibited impaired renal function, severe damage to renal tubular cells and increased apoptosis and ferroptosis. However, BBR treatment group demonstrated improved renal function, decreased apoptosis and ferroptosis. Similar results were observed in the in vitro experiments using HK-2 cells. BBR reduced ioversol-induced apoptosis and ferroptosis, and exerted its protective effects through Akt/Foxo3a/Nrf2 signalling pathway. BBR administration increased the expression of Foxo3a and Nrf2 while decreasing the levels of p-Akt and p-Foxo3a. In conclusion, this study revealed that BBR effectively inhibited ioversol-induced apoptosis and ferroptosis in vivo and in vitro. The protective effects of BBR were mediated through the modulation of Akt/Foxo3a/Nrf2 signalling pathway, leading to the alleviation of CIN. These findings suggest that BBR may have therapeutic potential for protecting against CIN in patients undergoing angiography with iodine-based contrast agents.

Real-time biodistribution monitoring and enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of platinum(II)-based anticancer drugs are urgently required to elevate their clinical performance. Herein, a tetraphenylethene derivative (TP) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and an iodine atom are selected as ligands to endow platinum (II) complex TP-Pt-I with real-time in vivo self-tracking ability by fluorescence (FL) and computerized tomography (CT) imaging, and improved anticancer efficacy by the combination of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy. Especially, benefiting from the formation of a donor-acceptor-donor structure between the AIE photosensitizer TP and Pt-I moiety, the heavy atom effects of Pt and I, and the presence of I, TP-Pt-I displayed red-shifted absorption and emission wavelengths, enhanced ROS generation efficiency, and improved CT imaging capacity compared with the pristine TP and the control agent TP-Pt-Cl. As a result, the enhanced intratumoral accumulation of TP-Pt-I loaded nanoparticles is readily revealed by dual-modal FL and CT imaging with high contrast. Meanwhile, the TP-Pt-I nanoparticles show significantly improved tumor growth-inhibiting effects on an MCF-7 xenograft murine model by combining the chemotherapeutic effects of platinum(II) and the photodynamic effects of TP. This self-tracking therapeutic complex thus provides a new strategy for improving the therapeutic outcomes of platinum(II)-based anticancer drugs.

The prevalence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has been rising in recent years. Despite its relatively low mortality, PTC frequently metastasizes to lymph nodes and often recurs, posing significant health and economic burdens. The role of iodine in the pathogenesis and advancement of thyroid cancer remains poorly understood. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are recognized to function as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) that modulate gene expression and play a role in various cancer stages. Consequently, this research aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which circRNA influences the impact of iodine on PTC. Our research indicates that high iodine levels can exacerbate the malignancy of PTC via the circ_0004851/miR-296-3p/FGF11 axis. These insights into iodine's biological role in PTC and the association of circRNA with the disease could pave the way for novel biomarkers and potentially effective therapeutic strategies to mitigate PTC progression.

OBJECTIVE: Iodine fortification (IF) induces an initial increase followed by a decrease in the incidence of hyperthyroidism in the general population. Within the population of hyperthyroid patients, the sex-, age- and subtype distribution changes after IF. The risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in hyperthyroid patients may be influenced by these factors. Therefore, we aimed to examine how the association between incident hyperthyroidism and AF was affected by IF increasing the population iodine intake from moderate-mild iodine deficiency to low adequacy. DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Incident hyperthyroid patients were included at the date of first inpatient or outpatient diagnosis, and AF diagnoses within 3 months before to 6 months after the index date were identified in Danish nationwide registers, 1997-2018. The relative risk (RR) of AF each calendar year (reference: 1997; IF introduced: 2000) was analyzed in Poisson regression models adjusted for age, sex, educational level, geographic region, and comorbidities. RESULTS: Overall, in 62,201 patients with incident hyperthyroidism 7.9% were diagnosed with AF. There was a minor nonsignificantly increased risk of AF during the first years after IF followed by a gradual decrease to RR 0.76 (0.62-0.94) in 2017. There were no statistically significant differences in the development in the risk of AF by sex, age group, or geographic region. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that IF may reduce the risk of concomitant AF in hyperthyroid patients. If these results are confirmed, IF may not only reduce the population incidence of hyperthyroidism but also reduce the burden of morbidity in the remaining hyperthyroid patients.

In this work, we proposed a double moving redox boundary (MROB) model to realize the colorless analyte electrophoresis titration (ET) by the two steps of the redox reaction. Single MROB has been proposed for the development of ET sensing (Analyst, 2013, 138, 1137. ACS Sensor, 2019, 4, 126.), and faces great challenges in detecting the analyte without color change during redox reaction. Herein, a novel model of double-MROB electrophoresis, including its mechanisms, equations, and procedures, was developed for titration by using ascorbic acid as a model analyte. The first MROB was created with ferric iron (Fe3+) and iodide ion (I-) in which Fe3+ was reduced as Fe2+ and I- was oxidized as molecular iodine (I2) used as an indicator of visible MROB due to blue starch-iodine complex. The second boundary was then formed between the molecular iodine and model analyte of ascorbic acid. Under given conditions, there was a quantitative relationship between velocity of MROB (VMROB(ii)) and ascorbic acid concentration (CVit C) in the double-MROB system (1/VMROB(ii) = 0.6502CVit C + 4.5165, and R = 0.9939). The relevant relative standard deviation values of intraday and inter-day were less than ∼5.55% and ∼6.64%, respectively. Finally, the titration of ascorbic acid in chewable vitamin C tablets was performed by the developed method, the titration results agreed with those via the classic iodometric titration. All the results briefly demonstrated the validity of the double MROB model, in which Vit C was used as a model analyte. The developed method had potential use in quantitative analysis of redox-active species in biomedical samples.

BACKGROUND: Povidone­iodine (PVP-I) is an effective and commonly used broad-spectrum antiseptic; limited information exists around its long-term safety and impact on endocrine disruption. We assessed the dermal toxicity and toxicokinetics following a once-daily application of 7.5% (w/v) and 10% (w/v) PVP-I in Göttingen Minipigs® for up to 39 weeks. METHODS: An in vivo study was conducted in male (n = 27) and female (n = 27) minipigs. Animals were randomized into untreated control, 7.5% and 10% PVP-I, and matching vehicle treatment groups. Animals were assessed for general in-life measurements, including skin irritation and organ weights. Serum samples were analyzed for PVP, total iodine, triiodothyronine [T3], thyroxine [T4], thyroid stimulating hormone [TSH], and toxicokinetic parameters. RESULTS: Neither 7.5% nor 10% PVP-I affected general in-life measurements. Increased mean thyroid gland absolute weights were noted with 7.5% and 10% PVP-I. Serum levels of PVP, T3, T4, and TSH in the 7.5% and 10% PVP-I treatment group animals were similar to those in vehicle treatment group animals. Mean total serum iodine concentration was 52- and 13-fold higher with 7.5% and 10% PVP-I, respectively, vs respective vehicle treatments. There was no dose-dependent increase in mean maximum serum concentration and area under the curve from 0 to 24 h for PVP, T3, T4, and TSH, nor accumulation of PVP, T3, T4, or TSH in the study. CONCLUSION: Once-daily dermal application of 7.5% and 10% PVP-I for up to 39 weeks was safe and well tolerated in Göttingen Minipigs® and was not associated with skin irritation, thyroid dysfunction, or endocrine disruption. As the anatomy and physiology of the minipig skin closely resembles that of human skin, the findings of this study suggest that 7.5% and 10% PVP-I may be translated into antimicrobial benefits for humans without the risk of endocrine disruption.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To assess the most relevant articles on the impact of iodine supply in at-risk populations, namely infants and young children, pregnant and lactating women. RECENT FINDINGS: The 2022 Iodine Global Network Annual Report confirmed the dramatic decrease of severe iodine deficiency over the last 30 years, thanks to universal iodine iodization. However, mild to moderate deficiency is still present in many countries, where recent data showed a decrease of iodine intake and an impairment of iodine status. Unfortunately, there is yet no validated biomarker to classify the iodine status at the individual level. Available data show that there is no clear evidence to link mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency to adverse health outcomes in pregnant and lactating women as well as in infants and children. The description of a negative impact of maternal iodine excess on neurodevelopment of infants is of concern. SUMMARY: Optimization of salt iodization (e.g. careful increase in iodine concentration in salt, use by food industry in processed foods) combined with targeted, personalized supplementation under medical supervision if needed (e.g. low intake of iodine rich foods, vegan diet) seems currently preferable to blanket supplementation.

PURPOSE: To examine whether adherence to a low-iodine diet (LID) enhances the therapeutic efficacy of radioiodine therapy (RAI) in Graves' hyperthyroidism (GH) in iodine-rich areas. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 185 patients with GH from Aichi (n = 114) and Hokkaido (n = 71) Prefectures. Patients aged ≥ 18 years with GH who underwent RAI between December 2012 and March 2022 were divided into subgroups based on pretreatment with anti-thyroid drug (ATD) or potassium iodide (KI). Patients were followed up with LID from 18 days (group A) or 7 days (group H) before RAI to 3 days after RAI. The dose of radioactive iodine 131 (131I) was adjusted to deliver > 100 Gy to the thyroid. The associations between urinary iodine concentration on UIC2 vs. 24hRU and UIC2 vs. the 1-year RAI success rate (SR) were investigated. RESULTS: Compared with UIC1, UIC2 was significantly decreased in all subgroups (P < 0.01). An inverse correlation between UIC2 and 24hRU was observed in the four groups; however, the difference was insignificant. The SR in groups A and H was 85% and 89%, respectively. Univariate analysis revealed no association between UIC2 and SR in each group. Additionally, stratification of the 185 patients into quartiles using UIC2 yielded no significant differences in SR (p = 0.79). CONCLUSIONS: LID sufficiently reduced UIC in patients undergoing RAI. Although a lower UIC2 may increase 24hRU, it did not increase the success of RAI. The benefit of LID in enhancing the efficacy of RAI in GH treatment remains uncertain.

BACKGROUND: In lactating women, iodine metabolism is regulated and maintained by the kidneys and mammary glands. Limited research exists on how iodine absorbed by lactating women is distributed between the kidneys and breasts. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to accurately evaluate the total iodine intake (TII), urinary iodine excretion (UIE), and breast milk iodine excretion (BMIE) in lactating women and explore the relationship between TII and total iodine excretion (TIE). METHODS: A 7-d iodine metabolism study was conducted on 41 lactating women with a mean age of 30 y in Yuncheng and Gaoqing, China, from December 2021 to August 2023. TII and TIE were calculated by measuring the iodine content in food, water, 24-h urine, feces, and breast milk. The urinary iodine excretion rate (UIER), breast milk iodine excretion rate (BMIER), and partitioning of iodine excretion between urine and breast milk were determined. RESULTS: Iodine metabolism studies were performed for 285 d. The median TII and TIE values were 255 and 263 µg/d, respectively. With an increase in TII, UIER, and BMIER, the UIE and BMIE to TII ratio exhibited a downward trend. The median UIER, BMIER, and proportion of iodine excreted in urine and breast milk were 51.5%, 38.5%, 52%, and 37%, respectively. When the TII was <120 µg/d, the BMIER decreased with the increase of the TII (ß: -0.90; 95% confidence interval: -1.08, -0.72). CONCLUSIONS: When maternal iodine intake is low, the proportion in breast milk increases, ensuring sufficient iodine nutrition for infants. In addition, the UIE of lactating women with adequate iodine concentrations is higher than their BMIE. This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04492657.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, the Australian government mandated the fortification of bread salt with iodine. In 2010, pregnant and lactating women were also advised to take an iodine-containing supplement. Our assessment of this policy in an iodine-sufficient population showed that children whose mothers were in the highest and lowest quartiles of iodine intake performed more poorly on early childhood tests of cognition and language than those in the second quartile. However, we did not quantify the iodine intake associated with optimal neurodevelopment. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to establish the iodine intake range in pregnancy associated with optimal child neurodevelopment. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of pregnant women and their young children (n = 699). Iodine intake was assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire at 16 and 28 wk of gestation. Child neurodevelopment at 18 mo of age was measured using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III). The relationship between average iodine intake during pregnancy and child neurodevelopment was assessed using linear regression with fractional polynomials and adjustment for confounders. RESULTS: Mean (SD) iodine intake was similar at study entry and 28 wk, 308 (120) µg/d, with 82% of women taking iodine supplements at study entry. The relationship between iodine intake during pregnancy and Bayley-III cognitive and language scores was curvilinear (P = 0.001 and P = 0.004, respectively), with the lowest Bayley-III scores observed at lower and higher iodine intakes. The inflection point that drove the association between lower iodine intake in pregnancy and poorer child neurodevelopment scores was around 185 µg/d; for the higher pregnancy iodine intakes, language and cognitive scores were negatively affected from ∼350 µg/d to 370 µg/d, respectively. Higher iodine intakes were being driven by supplement use. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted, not blanket, iodine supplementation may be needed for pregnant women with low-iodine intake from food.

BACKGROUND: Usual intakes of iodine in United States girls and women, including pregnant and lactating women have not been adequately studied. Adequate intake of iodine is critical for neurodevelopment of girls, thyroid functions, and reproductive health of women. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the adequacy and trends of iodine intake of United States girls and women between 2011 and 2020. METHODS: We mapped the sources of United States girls and women's iodine intake from the 29 food groups between 2011 and 2020 using United States Department of Agriculture's iodine data release 2. The total food intakes from 2 d of dietary recall of the United States National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey and estimated iodine concentrations of the food groups were used to calculate the usual iodine intakes of female participants. Trends of usual intakes, urinary iodine concentrations (UIC), and estimated intake adequacy were calculated. RESULTS: Median usual intakes of iodine estimated from diet and supplements and UIC of United States girls and nonpregnant, nonlactating women declined between 2011 and 2020 in all 3 age groups: ≤14 y, 15-49 y old, and ≥50 y. Median usual intakes of iodine for pregnant and lactating United States women declined as well. Inadequacy levels of usual iodine intake were 9.9% for nonpregnant, nonlactating women of reproductive age 15-49 y old, 40.3% for lactating, and 10.2% for pregnant women in the 2017-2020 period. Intake insufficiencies estimated from UIC were 48.8%, 63.2%, and 31.3% for nonpregnant, nonlactating women of reproductive age 15-49 y old, pregnant and lactating women, respectively, in the 2017-2020 period. A significant decline in milk consumption might be one of the major contributors to the dietary iodine decline in United States women. CONCLUSIONS: Iodine intake of United States girls and women were on the decline between 2011 and 2020 and the increased inadequacy of iodine intake deserves public health attention.

BACKGROUND: Although iodine modulates bone metabolism in the treatment of thyroid disease, the effect of iodine intake on bone metabolism remains less known. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of excess iodine intake in rats on bone reconstruction in the 6th and 12th month of intervention. METHOD: Rats were treated with different doses of iodinated water: the normal group (NI, 6.15 µg/d), 5-fold high iodine group (5HI, 30.75 µg/d), 10-fold high iodine group (10HI, 61.5 µg/d), 50-fold high iodine group (50HI, 307.5 µg/d), and 100-fold high iodine group (100HI, 615 µg/d). Thyroid hormone concentrations were determined by a chemiluminescent immunoassay. Morphometry and microstructure of bone trabecula were observed by hematoxylin and eosin staining and microcomputed tomography, respectively. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining were performed to evaluate the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, respectively. RESULTS: The 24-h urine iodine concentration increased with iodine intake. The rats in the HI groups had higher serum thyroid-stimulating hormone and decreased serum free thyroxine concentrations in the 12th month than the NI group (all P < 0.05). The percentage of the trabecular bone area and osteoblast perimeter in the 100HI group were significantly lower than those in the NI group (P < 0.05). Increased structure model index was observed in the 50HI and 100HI groups compared with the NI group in the 6th month and increased trabecular separation in the 12th month (all P < 0.05). ALP and TRAP staining revealed osteoblastic bone formation was reduced, and the number of TRAP+ multinucleated cells decreased with increasing iodine intake. CONCLUSIONS: Excess iodine intake may increase the risk of hypothyroidism in rats. Chronic excess iodine intake can lead to abnormal changes in skeletal structure, resulting in reduced activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which inhibits the process of bone reconstruction and may lead to osteoporosis.

Waterborne coatings with intrinsic antibacterial attributes have attracted significant attention due to their potential in mitigating microbial contamination while simultaneously addressing the environmental drawbacks of their solvent-based counterparts. Typically, antimicrobial coatings are designed to resist and eliminate microbial threats, encompassing challenges such as biofilm formation, fungal contamination, and proliferation of black mold. Iodine, when solubilized using ethylene glycol and incorporated as a complex into waterborne latex dispersions, has shown remarkable antimicrobial activity. Here, we demonstrate the effect of the film formation process of these iodinated latex dispersions on their antimicrobial properties. The effect of iodine on the surface morphology and mechanical, adhesion, and antimicrobial properties of the generated films was investigated. Complete integration and uniform distribution of iodine in the films were confirmed through UV-vis spectrophotometry and a laser Raman imaging system (LRIS). In terms of properties, iodinated films showed improved mechanical strength and adhesion compared with blank films. Further, the presence of iodine rendered the films rougher, making them susceptible to bacterial adhesion, but interestingly provided enhanced antibiofilm activity. Moreover, thicker films had a lower surface roughness and reduced biofilm growth. These observations are elucidated through the complex interplay among film thickness, surface morphology, and iodine properties. The insights into the interlink between the film formation process and antimicrobial properties of iodinated latex dispersions will facilitate their enhanced application as sustainable alternatives to solvent-based coatings.

BACKGROUND: The effect of iodine deficiency, especially during the fetal period, on thyroid cancer risk remains unclear. The evidence from observational studies is controversial because of the inevitable confounding factors. We studied the causal effect of congenital iodine deficiency on differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) based on Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: Two-Sample MR analysis was performed using data from published genome-wide association studies, including congenital iodine deficiency syndrome (CIDS) (353 cases, 187,684 controls) and DTC (649 cases, 431 controls) data. RESULTS: There was a causal relationship between CIDS and DTC (P < 0.05), with CIDS increasing the DTC risk by 37.4% (OR = 1.374, 95%CI = 1.110-1.700). Heterogeneity tests and tests of multiple validities indicated that the results were solid and reliable (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Fetal iodine deficiency increases the risk of DTC, so future clinical studies should focus on the effect of iodine supplementation during pregnancy to reduce the risk of thyroid cancer in the offspring.

The aim of the study was to investigate the iodine intake in the resident population in Xi'an and analyze the relationship between iodine nutritional status and the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism and thyroid nodules (TNs). A total of 2507 people were enrolled in Xi'an. Venous serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), urinary iodine concentration (UIC), and thyroid ultrasonography were collected. Patients with abnormal TSH were checked for free thyroxine (FT4) and triiodothyronine (FT3). Adults in Xi'an had median UICs of 220.80 µg/L and 178.56 µg/l, respectively. A sum of 16.78% of people had subclinical hypothyroidism. Both iodine excess and iodine deficit increased the frequency of subclinical hypothyroidism. The lowest was around 15.09% in females with urine iodine levels between 200 and 299 µg/l. With a rate of 10.69%, the lowest prevalence range for males was 100-199 µg/l. In Xi'an, 11.37% of people have TNs. In comparison to other UIC categories, TN occurrences were higher in females (18.5%) and males (12%) when UIC were below 100 µg/l. In conclusion, iodine intake was sufficient in the Xi'an area, while the adults' UIC remains slightly higher than the criteria. Iodine excess or deficiency can lead to an increase in the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism. Patients with iodine deficiency are more likely to develop TNs.
